It's safe to say that multiple Emmy award-winner Edie Falco knows a thing or two about thrilling crime dramas.

And the esteemed actress is set to bring her expertise to new police show Tommy, which will leave fans of the genre on the edge of their seats.

Coming to the home of nail-biting drama Alibi, Tommy follows Edie's character Abigail 'Tommy' Thomas, who is appointed LA's first female chief of police after the former chief - played by Corbin Bernsen - is forced out due to a slew of scandals.

As the storylines twist and turn to follow Tommy's murky work in the LAPD, the strong female lead helps showcase how to navigate as a woman in a VERY male dominated world - and Tommy ensures she does it with gusto.

So what's to love about Tommy - and why will you be tuning in to the juiciest new cop drama on television?

This is a woMAN's world

Watching as Tommy navigates through a job which has only before been filled by men, makes for sheer power playing out on screen.

Speaking to Alibi, Edie touched on the importance of female representation on-screen and how women's roles are evolving on TV.

She said: 'In general, I see that women are getting to be powerful, strong and complicated on screen in a way that they didn't use to. I think that's because there's an audience for it now.'

Carmela lives on

Edie's usual charm has now been turned up a notch thanks to her character's New York accent and sassy attitude.

The role of a strong woman comes naturally to the star and she proves this as she lends all her trademark behaviour to her latest starring role.

Serious issues

Far from just being about drama, Tommy addresses serious real life issues.

The show strives to stay true to its LA backdrop by giving nods to issues facing the area including sex trafficking, immigration and wildfires.

The drama immediately introduces viewers to hard-hitting problems, as an anti-immigration riot plays out and we see how Tommy tackles the issues.

The social awareness of the drama makes it feel not only like you are being entertained but also educated by the issues at hand.

Tommy herself

The titular character of Tommy is scene-stealing in herself beyond the epic backdrop of the ins and outs of the world of the LAPD.

Speaking about he role, Edie said: 'Tommy's got a very solid moral compass. She wants to do her job and she wants to do it well, and she also wants to do the right thing...

'She has a feeling of wanting to serve the people she works for, but that's easier said than done because there are so many variables at play.'

Representation

Not only is the character of Tommy the first female chief of the LAPD but also the first openly gay person to hold the role.

On how her sexual orientation impacts the role, Edie told Alibi: 'I don't think it does. She is a New Yorker. She's a woman. She's a blonde. She's a lot of things...

'Her sexual orientation is a part of who she is, but she doesn't wear a shirt that says, "I'm a lesbian." For me, I think it's important that every single person gets represented in television...

'I think everybody in the world wants to look at television and be able to find themselves somewhere. In the past, I think we've been leaving huge swaths of the population out of that experience.'

Tommy starts tonight at 9pm on Alibi: Sky 132, Virgin Media 126, BT 312, TalkTalk 312
