Three arrested for attack on State Excise squad during raid in Thane

Thane, Oct 6 (UNI) The city police on Tuesday arrested three people on the charge of allegedly attacking the squad of the State Excise department during raid on a car carrying liquor.
Acting on a tip off, the State Excise squad of Kalyan office kept a vigil at the Chinchpada Road near the Ekvira Temple late on Monday night and stopped the car that was transporting liquor.
While the Excise team was taking the nabbed occupants of the car to their office, the alleged accused called their accomplices and they all beat up the squad members with iron rods, in which six people including Excise inspector Sunil Kanse was injured badly, police said.
The group also helped some others in the car to flee the scene while three of them were pinned down by the Excise squad.
Police have launched the hunt for other accused, who had fled after attacking the Excise staff.
An offence under sections 307, 353, 332, 143, 147, 148 and 149 of Indian Penal Code was registered today with the Kolsewadi police of the Kalyan division.
The arrested accused -- Lahu Mhatre, Naresh Bhoir and Santosh Cholekar -- were today produced before a magistrate who remanded them into police custody till October 10, sources added.
