The benchmark indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty, extended their opening gains in early session on Tuesday.
At 10,01 am the Sensex was at 39,291, up 317 points or 0.81 per cent firmer, while the Nifty quoted at 11,589, up 86 points or 0.75 per cent higher.
The top gainers on the Sensex were HDFC (up nearly 5 per cent), M&M (3.23 per cent), Asian Paints (2.53 per cent), HDFC Bank (1.74 per cent) and IndusInd Bank (1.49 per cent).
The laggards were TCS, Infosys, NTPC, Sun Pharma and Tata Steel.
According to an agency report, Sensex and Nifty piled on gains in opening session as investors indulged in wide-spread buying taking cues from positive global sentiment.
On Monday, the Sensex had settled at 38,973.70, up 276.65 points or 0.71 per cent; while the Nifty had closed at 11,503.35, higher by 86.40 points or 0.76 per cent.
Exchange data showed that foreign investors bought equities worth Rs 236.71 crore in Indian market on Monday.
On Tuesday, Asian markets too continued their upward movement as investor sentiment further improved after US President Donald Trump was discharged from hospital following COVID-19 treatment. Further, hopes of a fresh US stimulus package also buoyed investor sentiment. (with inputs from PTI)
