Kolkata, Oct 6 (UNI) The COVID-19 toll in Bengal rose to 5,318 with the death of
63 persons on Tuesday, highest number of toll on a single day so far, while the tally
touched 2,77,049 with 3,370 new confirmed cases.
According to the latest State Government Health bulletin, the active cases
accounted for 27,988, while the number of discharged cases stood at 2,43,743.
The percentage of discharged rose to 87.98 per cent.
The bulletin said the total number of samples tested stood at 34,80,510 with
42,382 tested in the past 24 hours.
While the city recorded the highest number of 1799 deaths so far, surrounding
districts of North 24 Parganas and Howrah came second and third respectively with
1194 and 593 fatalities.
South 24 Parganas accounted for 340 deaths, the toll in Hooghly stood at 244,
Darjeeling 115, Paschim and Purba Midnapore 154 and 141 respectively, Malda 56,
Murshidabad 72, Nadia 100, Paschim Bardhaman 74, Purba Bardhaman 55,
Jalpaiguri 61, Uttar Dinajpur 41, Dakshin Dinajpur 38, Birbhum 33, Alipurduar 62,
Kalimpong 7, Cooch Behar 42, Purulia 21, Jhargram 10 and Bankura 63.
Meanwhile, acclaimed octogenarian Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who
was suffering from respiratory problem, on Tuesday tested Covid-19 positive.
His Covid-19 report came positive this morning.
He was admitted in Bellevue hospital in the city at around 11 AM.
Hospital sources said his condition is stable.
The celebrated actor earned encomiums for his astounding role as "Feluda" in
Oscar-winning Director Satyajit Ray's movies.
