1. Alison Hammond: Back to School, ITV

★★★★☆

"I asked ITV if I could make a documentary about something that shapes us all – history. And guess what? They said yes. Move over Louis Theroux, there’s a new girl in town. Bring on the Bafta!”

That might be a little optimistic but Alison Hammond: Back to School was still a delightful hour in her company. As the irrepressible host toured the UK, using the country as her classroom to educate herself in black British history, you couldn’t help being swept along for the ride.

As Noel Fielding announced during the showstopper round: “Paul Hollywood wants bread! And if he doesn’t get it, he’s going to be furious!” Yes, it was the Merseyside master baker’s favourite episode - but it certainly wasn’t the bakers’, with several admitting they feared the extra scrutiny.

Hollywood cranked up the pressure by pacing the tent, studying them closely, asking sceptical questions and replying with the dreaded: “Interesting...” (Translation: “You’re wrong.”) He psyched out Lottie about the fruit-to-flour ratio in her blueberry breakfast soda bread. Like a one-man arbitration panel, he decided that Hermine’s enriched dough “wasn’t brioche” and that Linda’s showstopper “wasn’t tiger bread”.
