Hearing in Hathras gang rape case was held today in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, the Uttar Pradesh government filed an affidavit before the court and explained why the victim's body was cremated at night.
In its affidavit, the UP government told the court that the district administration persuaded the parents of the victim to perform the last rites at night to save them from mass violence in the morning. Citing intelligence input, it was expected that the case could be given an ethnic / communal colour.
At the same time, the UP government requested the Supreme Court to direct a CBI inquiry into the Hathras case, saying that this will ensure that no vested interest can create false and false discussions. In response to a PIL listed before the bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, the state government said that it is important that an independent central agency be investigated.
The Dalit girl died on September 29 in a Delhi hospital due to serious injuries, a fortnight after she was allegedly raped by four men in a village in Hathras. The state government said that by the investigation by the central agency, the obstacles arising from the vested interests in the fair investigation will be removed.
The UP government said, the CBI investigation will ensure that no vested interests can create false and false discussions. The state government said in the affidavit that it has already requested the central government to hand over the investigation to the CBI.
Apart from the alleged gang rape and death case, the state government has requested the CBI to investigate the FIR lodged in the state in connection with communal hatred, inciting violence, incident of inflammatory propaganda by a section of media and alleged conspiracy for political interests.
