This month ushered in a new era amid lockdown measures in Africa. Among the aspects of life like we used to know pre-Covid-19, international travel is returning step by step.
International travelers need to present a test that is not older than 72 hours when they land in foreign soil. International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor said that they “should possess a mandatory travel insurance which is supposed to cover the Covid-19 test and quarantine costs” that might be necessary after screening.
Covid-19 has made us return to basic hygiene and remember how to manage our borders properly for controlling the spread of pandemic, along with illegal immigration and human trafficking.
Our permeable borders and corruption at border posts let in too many unaccounted-for immigrants. The carelessness has plagued social services’ infrastructure.
The absence of tourists from the UK, mostly from the EU countries, the US, China and others are expected to dampen tourism revenue in the short term but is actually a blessing in the long term.
Besides making us manage our ports of entry watchfully, it will teach our tourism industry to price itself for the domestic travelers.
If domestic tourists spend more than foreign tourists, then domestic tourism is the only way to initiate economic recovery.
