String of crashes leaves three people dead, 90-year-old critically injured

Three people have died and a 90-year-old is fighting for life after separate traffic incidents on Queensland roads.

A man died in the Brisbane suburb of Acacia Ridge after he was hit by a vehicle.

Police believe the 59-year-old man walked across Beaudesert Road just after 6pm on Sunday and was struck by a passing vehicle.

He died at the scene after suffering significant injuries.

The 44-year-old female driver of the vehicle was not injured, but was taken to hospital after experiencing emotional distress.

In the Scenic Rim, emergency services were called to a "serious" single motorcycle incident on Boonah Rathdowney Road at Maroon about 9am on Monday. Police were working to notify the riders' next of kin.

The road remains closed with motorists urged to avoid the area and traffic diversions in place.

A woman also died after being trapped in her vehicle after a crash overnight in Mount Isa. Police said a ute travelling northbound on Simpson Street and a station wagon travelling in the opposite direction collided about 8.20pm.

One of the passengers in the station wagon, a 53-year-old Mount Isa woman, was trapped in the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. She died at the scene.

The 20-year-old male driver of the ute and his female passenger were not seriously injured but were taken to hospital for observation.

The 32-year-old female driver of the station wagon and a male passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Mount Isa Base Hospital.

On the Sunshine Coast, three people, including a 90-year-old in a critical condition, were hospitalised after a two-vehicle crash.

Police believe a black station wagon and a silver Landcruiser were travelling in opposite directions along Cooroy Noosa Road at Lake Macdonald when the vehicles collided head-on about 7.15pm.

The 16-year-old female driver of the Landcruiser and a 45-year-old female passenger sustained injuries in the crash, as well as a 90-year-old woman who was trapped in the wreckage.

All three were taken to hospital with seatbelt-related head, chest and abdominal injuries. The 45-year-old male driver of the station wagon had a shoulder injury and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

All four crashes are being investigated by police. As of midnight on Sunday there had been 193 fatalities on Queensland roads this year, an increase 30 compared to the same period in 2019.
