COVID-19 cases mount up in Meghalaya

Shillong, Oct 5 (UNI) Meghalaya on Monday reported 111 new COVID-19 cases, taking the
total active cases to 2, 217 while 98 recoveries were also registered pushing the number of
recovered cases to 4,491, even as the death toll rose to 59 with one more person succumbed
to the infection, according to health officials.
With the spurt of the COVID-19 cases, Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War on
Monday reiterated the government’s appeal to the citizens of the State to follow the protocols
issued by the Health and Family Welfare department.
“The only protection from the virus is to take care of one's well being and be responsible
and wear masks, maintain social distance and wash our hands frequently,” he said.
“Now people will have to live with the virus and kill it in one's mind. We should treat the
virus as any other illness," Dr. War underscored.
Of the 111 new cases, the senior medical official informed 72 are from East Khasi Hills
district, 19 from Ri Bhoi district, 10 from East Jaintia Hills district, six from West Garo Hills
district, two from West Jaintia Hills district and one each from South West Garo Hills district
and South West Khasi Hills district.
Dr. War also informed that 37 Armed Forces personnel who are COVID 19 positive have
migrated from East Khasi Hills district to Ri Bhoi district.
“Out of the 98 recoveries registered on Monday, 82 are from East Khasi Hills district, seven
from Ri-Bhoi district, five from East Jaintia Hills district, three from West Garo Hills district
and one from West Khasi Hills district,” he said.
Dr. War also informed that as per the new guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical
Research (ICMR), which the state is following, those patients who are asymptomatic will be
released after 10 days, but they will have to quarantine themselves for another seven days
at home.
He said that according to ICMR, after 17 days the virus is not infectious anymore, adding
that an asymptomatic patient can be discharged from the corona care centre after 10 days.
Dr. War, however, said that such patients will have to undergo home quarantine for another
seven days.
"As per the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), the virus is no more infectious
after 17 days," he said.
As per the notification of the State Health and Family Welfare Department, of September 30, "patients under home isolation will stand discharged after 10 days of symptom onset and no
fever for three days. Thereafter the patient will be advised to isolate at home and self monitor
their health for further seven days. There is no need for testing after the home isolation period
is over."
Meanwhile, several commercial and residential complexes, besides government buildings,
including police outposts in the State have been brought under containment orders, following
detection of Covid-19 positive cases in these premises.
Meghalaya has seen a sharp spike in Covid-19 infection and rise in the number of casualties
related to the disease over the past one week, even as restrictions on public movement have
been gradually eased, with market places getting crowded over the days, while places of
worship have also been re-opened from October 1, while schools had partially re-opened
from September 21 for senior students to interact with teachers on voluntary basis.
