NEW DELHI: The Lok Janshakti Party walked out of the ruling National Democratic Alliance in Bihar on Sunday. The party, however, said it will remain in NDA at the centre and will work for a BJP-LJP government in Bihar.
The decision was taken after the meeting of LJP parliamentary party in Delhi on Sunday. In a unanimous decision, the LJP MPs said that they should contest alone and put up candidates against JDU.
“At the national level, we have a strong alliance with the BJP. At state level, we have decided to contest alone due to our differences with the JDU. On several seats, there could be a fight with JDU so that the people could choose the better candidate,” a LJP statement said.
Sources told ET that LJP would put candidates on all the seats contested by the JDU. During the meeting, all the MPs were told that they have to work hard on the seats contested by the BJP and have to make sure the defeat of the JDU on their seats.
LJP president Chirag Paswan didn’t make any comment but showed a victory sign after the meeting. LJP had been raising questions on the governance model of Nitish Kumar and the decision was widely speculated for the past few months.
BJP had been keeping an eye on all the developments in the LJP. Senior Bihar BJP leaders Sushil Kumar Modi, Mangal Pandey, Prem Kumar, Sanjay Jaiswal and others were in Delhi to meet the central leadership. A meeting took place at the residence of BJP national president JP Nadda which was attended by union home minister Amit Shah, Bihar election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis, Bihar general secretary in-charge Bhupender Yadav and other BJP leaders from Bihar. JDU sources tell ET that they have submitted a list of candidates to the BJP and BJP will take a final decision on seat sharing.
In a related development, Shreyasi Singh, a national-level shooter, joined the BJP on Sunday. SHe is the daughter of former Union minister Digvijay Singh and would contest assembly elections.
A meeting of the BJP central election committee took place in Delhi to decide on the party candidates. The party is working on releasing a first list of candidates by Monday morning.
JDU also kept an eye on developments in LJP. Senior party leaders RCP Singh, Lalan Singh, Vijay Chaudhary and others met Nitish Kumar during the day. “This is on the expected lines,” JDU spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan, told ET. “BJP and JDU are natural allies for decades and such experiments by different parties have not yielded any results. BJP-JDU will form the government with three fourth majority.”

Jothi Narayanan1 hour ago Politically ambitious millennials in India have to merge their regional parties with a national party that elects its leaders democratically by keeping in mind, the future of India. It must be noted that there is no stark difference between a dynasty of princely state in British India and a regional or a national party run by a dynasty in independent India. Both Republican and Democratic parties in USA, the world's first democracy always elect its leaders in a democratic process. A maharaja's denial to integrate with independent India in 1947 and then shift in stand by seeking asylum due to external threat caused a heavy loss of men and material to us. Having only two national parties following the ethics of democracy instead of dynasty is the way forward. | |
