Newton in quarantine; will miss Sunday's game.

FOXBORO — New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to multiple reports.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Field Yates reported late Sunday morning that Newton had tested positive for the coronavirus.

In addition, NFL Network reporters Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero said that the Patriots' starting quarterback will be added to the COVID-19/reserve list and that he will miss the game in Kansas City.

In a statement, the team said it was notified late Friday night that a player had tested positive for COVID-19, but did not identify that player.

According to the team, the player immediately entered self-quarantine. Several additional players, coaches and staff who have been in close contact with the player received point-of-care tests Saturday morning and all of them tested negative for COVID-19.

"We are in close consultation with the NFL, as well as our team of independent doctors and specialists, and will follow their guidance regarding our scheduled trip to Kansas City and the game against the Chiefs," the team's statement reads. The health and safety of our team, as well as our opponent, are of highest priority."

Newton, 31, signed with the Patriots as a free agent in July and has led the team to a 2-1 record as the starting quarterback in the first three games of the 2020 season.
