NEW DELHI:The Congress, AAP, Bhim Army of Chandrashekhar Azad and women’s and Dalits organisations staged protests in Delhi on Friday against the rape and killing of a Dalit woman in UP’s Hathras district. The parties sought action against culprits and police officials who brazenly cremated the body without consent of the victim’s family. Many leaders demanded resignation of chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi attended a prayer meeting at a Valmiki temple. “We will ensure justice for our sister. We won’t be quiet until she gets justice. The government didn’t help her and her family is feeling helpless. We will pressure the government. She was not even given a cremation as per Hindu traditions,” Vadra said.
Interestingly, the AICC communication wing said that the Valmiki temple was the same which “hosted the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, for 214 days between April 1946 and June 1947”. This prompted a wry remark from a party leader that the recollection was hopefully a tip on history and not comparison.
AAP and Bhim Army activists too held dharna in central Delhi, seeking justice for victim and resignation of the UP CM.
Sonia Backs Farmers
Congress president Sonia Gandhi released a video message in the second part of the party’s agitation on Gandhi Jayanti against farm laws of the Modi government: “The Congress party will continue to fight against the three black laws. Today our workers are agitating in favour of farmers and labourers in every assembly constituency. I want to say with confidence that this agitation of farmers and the Congress will be successful and the farmers will win,” she said.
