Freak on-field accident robs community of local rugby hero and devoted dad
An Ellenbrook rugby league player who was critically injured in a horrific on-field accident two weeks ago died in hospital this week.
Wiremu Kahui is being remembered as a passionate leader and a natural role model, with the father of four described as the "heart" of the Ellenbrook Rabbitoh's Rugby Club.
The senior player and vice captain was rushed to hospital after a tackle went wrong during a game against the South Perth Lions at Karawara's George Burnett Park.
The tackle was not deemed to have been "illegal or dangerous", according to authorities, with the incident considered a freak accident.
Mr Kahui's club said while the death of their team mate had made a "significant impact", he would remain in their hearts "forever".
