Police seize 170 kg Ganja meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka, 3 held

Thanjavur, Oct 02 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Q branch police foiled an attempt to smuggle 170 kilos of Ganja to Sri Lanka via sea route and arrested three persons at Velivayal fishing hamlet near Sethubavachathiram in Thanjavur district on Friday.
Police sources said acting on specific inputs, the Q branch police raided a fibreglass boat anchored in the waters in a suspicious manner about 4 nautical miles from the Velivayal coast. The police team found 85 bundles of ganja weighing 170 kg, valued at Rs 15 lakh in the boat, intended to be smuggled to Sri Lanka.
Three persons identified as N.Kumar (38), V,Krishnamurthy (35) and Kandan (50) were arrested in this connection.
Preliminary investigations revealed that one Sekhar alias "Ceylon" Sekhar (60), suspected to be a narcotic peddler had facilitated the smuggling of ganja from Madurai to Manamelkudi in Pudukottai district by road and then to Velivayal hamlet in a boat.
The narcotic substance was handed over to the trio for smuggling to the Island nation.
A search is on to arrest Sekhar, who is absconding.
Sethubavachathiram police have registered a case and are investigating.
