The total number of murders in Tamil Nadu increased significantly in 2019 to 1,745 from 1,569 of the crimes recorded in 2018, according to the latest data from National Crime Records Bureau.

Though the number of murders in Chennai in both 2018 and 2019 remained 172, the number of violent crimes went up along with robbery and dacoity cases last year compared to the previous year. The number of violent crimes in Chennai in 2019 was 1,477 while the number stood at 1,288 in the year 2018.
In the city, rape cases went up from 35 in the year 2018 to 42 in the year 2019. Similarly, the number of robberies were also up from 511 to 693, while dacoity cases increased from 15 to 17, according to NCRB data. While the number of murders went up in State, Tamil Nadu recorded lesser number of violent crimes in the same year. In the year 2018 11,654 cases of violent crimes were recorded while it came down to 10,946 last year.
The value of stolen properties also went up from Rs 144 crore in the year 2018 to Rs 172 crore last year. In Chennai, the number of IPC crimes came down from 20,160 in 2018 to 18,108 in 2019, NCRB data revealed.
