Early wickets key to success against KXIP: Shane Bond

Aware of Kings XI Punjab’s batting prowess, Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond on Wednesday said the defending champions would be look to pick up early wickets to put pressure on the KL Rahul-led side in their next IPL match.

Kings XI openers Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are having a ball with the bat in the ongoing IPL, leading the run scorers tally with 222 and 221 runs respectively that includes one century and a fifty each. And Bond very well understands the importance of stopping the duo on Thursday, insisting that early wickets would be key to success for the title holders.

“KL Rahul has got runs against us in the last few games and he is a brilliant player. We are having our bowlers’ meeting this afternoon, in terms of our planning for our opponents who are playing well. KL is a dynamic player, who scores all around the field,” the former Kiwi pacer said.

MI vs KXIP: Batting comparison

Skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have made inspiring starts this season, hitting a century and a fifty each, and getting the duo out early will be the key for Mumbai. Against Rajasthan, the pair shared a 183-run opening stand with Agarwal scoring his maiden ton while Rahul, fresh from recording the highest score by an Indian in IPL history, hit a 54-ball 69.

Mumbai Indians are blessed with a splendid batting firepower with the likes of Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan at the top-order, followed by the big-hitting Pollard and Hardik Pandya.

Mohammed Shami vs Rohit Sharma

Just around 16 per cent of Mohammed Shami’s deliveries in IPL-13 have been short balls, yet they have accounted for 42 per cent of his wickets in three games. Despite the one-bouncer-an-over restriction, Shami has got 3 of his 7 scalps with the balls that have climbed on to the batsmen. It’s this aspect of Shami’s bowling that has added a spicy sub-layer to the Mumbai Indians-Kings XI Punjab fixture.

On Thursday, facing the Kings XI pacer will be Rohit Sharma, one of the most destructive executioners of the pull.
While Sharma’s range of pull shots is extensive, Shami too has a variety of short balls.
