AR-15 rifle, automatic pistols seized in western Sydney raids: police

An AR-15 assault rifle, automatic pistols and ammunition stockpiles were seized by police in a raid in western Sydney on Wednesday as part of a national effort targeting gangs, police say.

A 27-year-old man, Emad Mahfoud, was arrested and charged with a range of offences following the early morning search of a home in Old Guildford. Another raid took place at a home in Yagoona in Sydney's south-west.

NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police, as part of a national anti-gangs squad, were alerted to a potential firearms supply syndicate in Sydney this month.

During the Old Guildford raid, investigators seized an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle, two automatic pistols, a silencer, knuckledusters, a large quantity of ammunition and cannabis, police said.

In Yagoona, investigators seized almost $110,000 cash and about half a kilogram of an "unidentified white powder", police said.

Mr Mahfoud appeared in Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday, charged with three counts of possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm and a series of other offences related to the weapons and drugs.

He was refused bail.

The operation was assisted by NSW Police's Strike Force Raptor, targeting criminal groups.
