New Delhi: The Indian Railways is set to introduce around 200 more passenger trains to cater to passengers travelling during the festive season, Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said on Thursday.
These trains will operate between October 15 and November 30.
Addressing a virtual press conference here, Yadav said that the government is monitoring the Covid-19 situation, and a decision will be taken post discussions with State governments.
"We are in discussion with States," Yadav said. "In the festive season we will run 200 trains or more during October 15 and November 30," he added.
Regular passenger train operations of the Indian Railways remain suspended due to the outbreak of Covid-19.
"We will start a campaign during the festive season to educate passengers, so that they take adequate precautions to protect themselves from covid-19,” Yadav said.
Train operations of the Indian Railways came to a screeching halt on March 24, as India went under a nationwide lockdown to limit the spread of Covid-19.
As restrictions were eased in phases, after the 30 Rajdhani trains were put into service in May and 200 trains started operations on June 1. The Indian Railways also began operating shramik special trains for transporting stranded migrants back to their home states, May 1 onwards. Over 4,000 such trains have been operated by the National transporter.
The Indian Railways also introduced 80 trains September 12 onwards.
