New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) A Public Interest Litigation filed before Delhi High Court was withdrawn on Wednesday after the court refused to entertain the PIL.
The petitioner had sought action against Twitter, a social media platform, for being allegedly involved in conspiracy to promote Anti-India propaganda such as Khalistan movement.
The high court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the PIL and file an appropriate representation before Central Government.
The petitioner had filed a PIL before Delhi High Court and requested to registered a case against Twitter and its representatives in India under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the provisions of Indian Penal Code dealing with sedition and waging war against the country and under the provisions of Information Technology Act.
The plea had contended that some "promoted handles" on Twitter's platform were being used for promoting an agenda for a separate Khalistan.
It is submitted that an enquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the matter be directed by the court as the persons allegedly promoting the messages in relation to Khalistan are from outside the country and the revenue generated by Twitter from India should be taxed in the country.
A bench comprising Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan said that the plea was made on claims of a Member of Parliament and news reports in the public domain and no issue has been flagged before the Government. The court allowed to withdraw the PIL with the direction to first approach the government with an appropriate representation for her grievance before moving the court.
