South Korea reports lowest coronavirus cases since new wave of outbreaks last month

South Korea on Monday reported 50 new coronavirus cases, the lowest since a new wave of outbreaks emerged from a church and a large political rally last month. Of the new cases, 40 were domestic and 10 imported, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). The numbers were the lowest since Aug. 11, just before a new cluster of infections emerged from a church whose members attended an anti-government rally in Seoul on Aug. 15, which had boosted the daily tally to more than 440 late last month.

The outbreaks have prompted the government to take unprecedented social distancing measures including a ban on on-sight nighttime dining. Some of the rules have been eased in recent weeks after the rate of daily infections slowed, but officials were still on high alert ahead of the Korean thanksgiving holidays of Chuseok this week, when tens of millions of people travel across the country.

Daily Covid-19 deaths in Rajkot see a decline for past 10 days

EVEN AS the daily number of new infections is touching new heights in Rajkot district for the past few days, the number of deaths in Covid-19 hospitals in the district has been steadily declining for the past 10 days and came down, for the first time in about a month, to single digit of nine on Sunday.

Nonetheless, the addition of the nine deaths took the number of total patients who succumbed in Covid-19 hospitals to 600 this month, almost double the previous months' tally and thus making September the deadliest month so far.

According to the official bulletin released by the local office of the state information bureau, total nine patients of Rajkot district died in a span of 24 hours till 8 am on Sunday. This was for the first time in about a month that the daily death toll remained in single digit. It was on August 31 that the number of daily casualty was six.

The development comes even as the daily number of fresh infections has been increasing. For the first time, the number of new cases in Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) remained over 100 per day for almost a week till Sunday. The highest single-day spike of 112 was reported on Sunday. However, cases in Rajkot rural have seen a high degree of variation this week, with Sunday throwing up 59 cases, the second highest so far while Wednesday recording only 33 cases. On eight of the last 10 days, the daily number of cases in the district, including the RMC jurisdiction, has remained more than 140, with Sunday’s tally of 171 representing a new peak so far.

However, the number of deaths have been declining steadily since September 17 when total 33 patients died while undergoing treatment in Covid hospitals in the district. That was also the last day the government shared data of deaths of patients of neighbouring districts undergoing treatment in hospitals in Rajkot district as well as bifurcation of deaths of patients of Rajkot city and Rajkot rural. Travellers from Dubai and the UK were primary sources of COVID-19 importations into India, according to an analytical study done by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi. According to the research, which has been published in the Journal of Travel Medicine, COVID-19 got induced into Indian states mainly due to international travels.

Chandigarh on Saturday reported 207 new Covid cases, taking the total number of cases to 11,380. The total number of deaths due to the disease is now 145 and the number of active cases is 2,298. As many as 260 people were also discharged from various facilities.

Former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi said he has tested positive for Covid-19 and urged those who came in contact with him in recent days to get tested. Meanwhile, Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who is battling a double infection of COVID-19 and dengue, has been administered convalescent plasma therapy and his condition is better now, an official from his office said.

In an epidemic such as this, a clear trend of recoveries exceeding new infections is keenly awaited, because it can be read as signalling a slowing spread. These are still very early days — the trend has to hold for several weeks to convey something more meaningful — but the fact that it has begun brings hope.
