South Africa is edging closer towards the 700 000 mark for confirmed Covid-19 cases after 1 268 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.
As of 27 September, a total of 670 766 confirmed cases were recorded in the country, according to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.
Gauteng remains the most affected, with 219 039 confirmed Covid-19 cases to date, which accounts for 32.7% of all the cases in the country.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded 118 731 confirmed cases, or 17.7% of the total recorded cases, with the Western Cape on 110 430 cases (16.5%).
The minister also revealed that recoveries stand at 603 721, which translated to a recovery rate of 90%.
The country still had 50 647 active cases, with 19 419 of those cases recorded in Gauteng. A total of 13 688 active cases were recorded in the Free State, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 6 145 cases.
Limpopo was the least affected province in terms of confirmed active cases, with 649 cases as of Sunday.
Mkhize also announced that a further 22 Covid-19 related deaths were recorded on Sunday, bringing the death toll to 16 398.
Seven of the new deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape, five in KwaZulu-Natal, five in North West, three in Western Cape, and two in Gauteng.
"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers that treated the deceased patients," Mkhize said.
