RIP SPB, our cultural world is poorer: PM Modi, President Kovind, politicians grieve death of singer

SP Balasubrahmanyam, who was battling with Covid-19 for over a month, died at the MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of India Ram Nath Kovind and several other politicians condoled music legend SP Balasubrahmanyam’s death in a post on Twitter and said that “Indian music has lost one of its most melodious voices”. SP Balasubrahmanyam, who was battling with Covid-19 for over a month, died at the MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai on September 25.

“With the unfortunate demise of Shri SP Balasubrahmanyam, our cultural world is a lot poorer. A household name across India, his melodious voice and music enthralled audiences for decades. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi said in his post.

“In the passing of music legend SP Balasubrahmanyam Indian music has lost one of its most melodious voices. Called ‘Paadum Nila' or ‘Singing Moon’ by his countless fans, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan and many National Awards. Condolences to his family, friends and admirers,” President of India said in a post on Twitter.

Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India, also mourned the singer’s death on Twitter. “Shocked at the tragic demise of the legendary musician Shri S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. He leaves a void in the world of music that is virtually impossible to fill,” he tweeted.

The Aam Aadmi Party also paid tribute as did Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. “Saddened to hear about demise of Shri SP Balasubrahmanyam. India has lost one of its most legendary voices. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans,” AAP said.
