The model code of conduct has come into force in the state after announcing the dates of Bihar assembly elections. The Election Commission is responsible for the successful conduct of transparent elections under the democratic system in the country. Therefore, the Election Commission implements the 'Election Code of Conduct' which every party and its candidate has to follow until the election is over.

Election Code of Conduct: What, Why and How

The Election Commission of India imposes a Model Code of Conduct before all elections in the country. During this time, political parties, their candidates, and the general public have to follow strict rules. If a candidate does not follow these rules, the Election Commission can take action against him. He can be prevented from contesting elections and an FIR can also be filed against him.

General rules

No party should do such a thing that will increase differences or spread hatred between castes and religious or linguistic communities.

Criticism of political parties should be limited to programs and policies, not individuals.

Religious places should not be used as a platform for campaigning.

Do not use corrupt conduct to get votes. Such as bribing, harassing voters, etc.

Do not use its wall, yard, or land without anyone's permission.

Do not interrupt any party gathering or procession.

Political parties will not issue any appeal that hurts anyone's religious or ethnic sentiments.

Rules related to political meetings

Police officers should be informed before the venue and time of the meeting.

The party or the candidate should make sure that the prohibitory order is not applicable to the place they have chosen.

Obtain permission to use loudspeakers in the venue first.

The organizers of the gathering assist the police in dealing with the disturbers.

Procession rules

Set the procession time, place of commencement, route, and end time and inform the police.

The procession should be such that traffic is not affected.

If political parties propose to take out a procession on the same day, one way, then talk about time first.

The procession should be taken out from the right side of the road.

Do not use such things in the procession, which can be misused in moments of excitement.

Polling day rules

Give badges or identity cards to authorized workers.

The slip to be given to the voters should be on plain paper and should not have a symbol, candidate, or party name.

No alcohol should be distributed to anyone on the day of the election and 24 hours before it.

Do not crowd the camps set up near the polling station.

Camps should be simple. Get a permit for driving a vehicle on the day of the vote.

Rules for the ruling party

Do not allow complaints in activities.

Ministers should not do campaign work during government tours.

Do not use government machinery and employees in this work.

Government aircraft and vehicles should not be used to promote the interests of the party.
