Sri Lanka goes virtual to promote wildlife tourism

24 Sep 2020 by Sanchita Nambiar

Virtual travel is changing the face of the tourism industry. Countries worldwide are coming up with interesting digital contents, enabling local and international travellers to explore destinations in the comfort of their home.

One amongst these is Sri Lanka that is set to promote wildlife through live-streaming. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) is collaborating with the private sector to live-stream the national parks of the island nation, showcasing exotic wildlife and natural habitat.

National parks including Yala, Minneriya, Kaudulla and Udawalawe will be covered under this tourism initiative. Travellers can enjoy stunning sights of leopards, bears, elephants, crocodiles, birds, wildlife scenery and the spectacular behaviour and movements of birds and mammals.

The project is expected to expand to eight wildlife streaming video sessions of one hour each.

These live-streaming sessions will be telecasted through social media platforms such as Youtube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and pre-promoted through social and digital platforms. Telecasting through broadcast media will also be carried out to read a wider audience base.

“Though the initiative directly targets wildlife enthusiasts, it is not limited to one segment but will expand to a wider spectrum of global travellers. It is also expected to contribute positively to the local industry, especially the wildlife service providers to capitalise in a post-Covid traveller scenario,” reads an official statement by the tourism board of Sri Lanka.
