The award-winning initiative to hold fever camps across the city is helping the Greater Chennai Corporation to identify around 20,000 influenza-like-illness (ILI) cases every day. The civic body has conducted more than 50,000 camps in the city so far.
Chennai: According to Corporation data, 50,485 fever camps were conducted from May 8 to September 22, from which 1.52 lakh ILI cases were identified among the 26.12 lakh participants – around 6 per cent.
On an average, the civic body conducts 400 to 500 fever clinics every day. Overall, the civic body collected and tested 1.47 lakh samples from those who attended the camps.
“Among the 1.47 lakh persons tested, 23,920 tested positive for coronavirus infection, which is 16 per cent positivity rate,” an official said.
On September 22, as many as 20,110 persons had attended the camps, through which the civic body identified 1,083 ILI cases.
Among the zones, Tondiarpet and Tiruvottiyur (12 per cent) have reported double of the overall average of ILI cases. In absolute figures numbers, however, Teynampet has recorded the highest number of ILI case - 21,293. Of the 2,781 ILI cases identified during the camps held at Ambattur zone, 1,073 persons were tested COVID positive. This works out to 39 per cent positivity.
As per the civic body data, more than 30 per cent of the city’s population have so far attended the fever camps.
The strategy had won a State award during Independence Day. As on Wednesday morning, the city has reported more than 1.57 lakh COVID-19 cases, of which 1.44 lakh have recovered.
The deaths due to the infection has reached 3,091, taking the mortality rate to 1.96 per cent. Only 6 per cent of the total infected persons (10,012 persons) are under treatment.
