Quinton de Kock (1) fell early in the first innings, but Rohit Sharma (80) and Suryakumar Yadav (47) got MI off to a cracking start despite the early blow. KKR did well to restrict MI to within 200 after a good comeback by their bowlers in the later half of the innings. Shivam Mavi (2/30) was the pick of the KKR bowlers. New acquisition Pat Cummins had a forgettable day with the ball. Sunil Narine (1/22) was the most economical bowler. After losing their openers early, KKR’s ship was steadied by a partnership between Dinesh Karthik (30) and Nitish Rana (24). MI’s pacers put their batsmen to the sword, with Jasprit Bumrah (2/31) being the pick of the bowlers, who snuffed out KKR’s remaining hopes by picking up the wickets of Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan in the same over.

This is the 20th time MI have beaten KKR, which is the most times a team has beaten any one team in the IPL. This is also the first time MI have managed to win a match in the UAE. KKR's captain Dinesh Karthik says Cummins and Morgan had got very little time after their quarantine to be with the team, and that he does not want to get analytical about the result today.
KKR end with 146/9 after their 20 overs. They were never in touch of the required run rate today. Bumrah's first 3 overs went for 2/5 and killed the game off with the wickets of Russell and Morgan. His last over went for 27 as Pat Cummins brought out some late fireworks but it was too late in the day to be of anything but academic importance. MI register their first win. KKR get their IPL 2020 started with a 49-run defeat.
Pattinson bowls the 19th. Cummins goes for the hills but cannot get the distance this time. He is out for a 12-ball 33, that will do a world of good to KKR's net run rate and also show KKR they have a genuine finisher in Cummins they could rely upon. Kuldeep Yadav is in at 10, with KKR having been stretched to the limits today. KKR 53 runs short with 1 over left.
Cummins gets a six off Bumrah to fine leg. Two balls later, Cummins gets another swing go high up in the air and just over the ropes for another six. Two balls later, the Aussie goes again. Pat Cummins is joined by Shivam Mavi with KKR's fight having now become one to gain respectability. Cummins takes the aerial route and gets a four to long on. Nikhil Naik walks in at 7. The required run rate creeps up above 20. Morgan gets an edge and Bumrah picks up his second. Morgan is out for 16 off 20 balls. KKR lose their 6th wicket. Bumrah bowls the 16th. Yorker first ball. Russell misses. And his leg stump is broken. Bumrah gets his man. Russell is out for 11 off 11. KKR 100/5 after 15.1 and now looking at a losing battle in the last 4.5 overs.
Boult bowls the 15th. Russell finds the ropes for the first time as Boult offers him width. Beats the diving fielder in the circle and gets going. Russell swings with all his might, gets a thick edge that goes to third man for four more. Morgan swings and misses. KKR need 96 in last 5 overs
Pattinson back to bowl the 14th as Rohit brings back his frontline bowlers to deliver the knockout blow. Russell swings. But cannot find the connection. Morgan gets one off the middle. Cracks a six over midwicket off Pattinson as the bowler goes full. KKR 90/4 after 14
Bumrah back to bowl the 13th. And he pins Russell back with his variations. Bumrah gets Morgan into a tanglw with a bouncer to his chest. The ball hits the stumps! But the bails are not dislodged. Morgan has a lucky break but the England captain has not been able to get going so far. On 8 off 13 balls.
Pollard bowls the 12th over. That will probably be the last over bowled by the 5th bowler for MI. Morgan cuts for four, a diving Hardik Pandya cannot cut it off. Three balls later, Hardik redeems! A brilliant running catch by him in the deep as Nitish Rana is out for 24 off 18. That is Pollard's first wicket in the IPL in a long long time. Russell joins Morgan at 6. Wicket! That's the breakthrough. Karthik is out for 30 off 23 balls. Chahar bowls the 11th over. Karthik swings wildly at the first ball, misses, and is out lbw. And it's Morgan in at 5 to join Rana.
Pollard back to bowl his 2nd, with Rohit looking to get these overs away before the gun batsmen Morgan and Russell come in. Mahela confirms Hardik is not yet ready to bowl. Rana and Karthik stroke the ball around against Pollard but it starting to look like not enough with the innings reaching the halfway stage.
Krunal Pandya bowls the 9th over. Offers width to Karthik and the skipper slashes for four again. Rana goes through the covers for four against him too. The KKR chase is gaining some momentum. 10 runs off Krunal's over. KKR 64/2 after 9, both batsmen Karthik and Rana on 21.
