In fact, for several days now, the number of people who have recovered from Covid-19 has been higher than the detection of new cases. The jump in recoveries and drop in new cases has ensured that the active cases in the country have dropped below the one million mark.
In other news, the phase-III human clinical trial of the Covid-19 vaccine being developed by Oxford University and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), began at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital in Pune on Monday. “We have started the phase-III trials of the vaccine (candidate Covishield). We will administer dose to 150 to 200 volunteers,” news agency PTI quoted Dr Muralidhar Tambe, Dean, Sassoon General Hospital, as saying.
Globally, over 30.4 million have been infected by the virus, of which, nearly 21 million have recovered and 958,400 people have died. While fatalities in the United States approached 200,000, China has found coronavirus particles on the packaging of frozen squid tentacles from Russia. Britain is at a “critical point” in the pandemic, and data on cases are heading in the “wrong direction,” Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warned Monday. Kerala reports 4,125 new COVID-19 cases on September 2, taking its active case tally to 40,382. The state tested 38,574 samples on Tuesday. Thiruvananthapuram district accounts for 18 per cent of active cases. State's death toll stands at 553.

Health Ministry says active COVID-19 cases less than one-fifth of total 55,62,663 infections in India. India's COVID-19 deaths per million population among lowest in world, which stands at 64 for India and 123 for world, it added.

The coronavirus death toll has risen to 50 in Ladakh as one more patient succumbed to the disease, while 79 new infections took the caseload to 3,832, officials said on Tuesday.
There are 1,047 active coronavirus cases in the Union Territory now, of which 591 are in Leh and 456 in Kargil district, the officials said.
A total of 2,735 patients, 71 per cent of the total caseload, have recovered till Monday evening, they said. (PTI)
The Chaitanya Institute of Mental Health has opened after being closed for several months due to Covid-19. More than 200 patients, including staff, had tested Covid-19 positive at the institute. “At least 70 patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease were infected with Covid-19 and Dr Imran Shaikh and his wife, Sapna Shaikh, a psychiatrist with the team, took up the challenge to look after them,” Ronny George, founder of the institute working in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation, told The Indian Express.
“It was a devastating experience as about 50 per cent patients in the dementia care unit were affected by Covid-19,” he added. Read more here
The Delhi High Court Tuesday stayed the Arvind Kejriwal-led government's September 13 order making it mandatory for 33 private hospitals in the city to reserve 80 per cent of their Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds for patients suffering from Covid-19. The HC observed that prima facie the order was arbitrary, unreasonable and in violation of fundamental rights, reported news agency PTI.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Association of Healthcare Providers. It sought responses from the Delhi government and Centre.

The railway police Tuesday arrested four leaders of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), including party general secretary Sandeep Deshpande, for defying Covid-19 orders. They had held a "savinay kaydebhang" (civil disobedience) protest, in which they boarded local trains demanding services be made available to the public, reported PTI. Services are currently only available for essential services and government employees.
A case has been registered against them by Karjat GRP under IPC Sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), and the Disaster Management Act, the Indian Railways Act and other Covid-19 prevention measures of Maharashtra.
On Monday, Telangana detected 2,166 new cases of the novel coronavirus, taking its tally to 1.74 lakh. At least 10 people succumbed to the disease in the state, taking the toll to 1,052. Of the new cases, 309 were reported from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), 166 from Rangareddy, 147 from Medchal Malkajgiri, 127 from Karimngar, and 113 from Nalgonda.

Odisha has recorded 1,62,920 Covid-19 cases, with 36,473 active cases. Among these are six members of two primitive tribes in the state, who tested positive for the disease in the last week of August. Districts will soon have to rely more on rapid antigen tests as state laboratories inch close to the total capacity mark for real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests and cases continue to surge in state.
