IIT JEE Advanced 2020 admit card HIGHLIGHTS: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi released the admit card for the JEE Advanced — the entrance exam for admission to undergraduate courses across IITs and IISc today. The admit card or hall ticket is available at jeeadv.ac.in.

This year, a total of 1,60,864 students have registered to appear for the exam. These are the top-ranking students from the JEE Main. Around 2.5 lakh students were eligible to apply, however, the number of candidates choosing to appear for IIT entrance test has declined to a three-year low.

Since the exam is being held amid the pandemic, IIT-Delhi – the organising institute – has made several arrangements to conduct the test amid special precautions. This year JEE Advanced will be held in more cities than before, subsequently, the number of exam centres have also been increased. The number of cities has gone up to 222 from 164 last year, and the number of exam centres from 600 last year to 1150 this year

How toppers are preparing for JEE Advanced

Most of the students consider the IIT entrance an advanced version of JEE Main. While NCERTs are sufficient for JEE Main, Advanced requires more than that, claim candidates. The questions are MCQs and are of various categories — comprehension, questions having more than one option as the correct answer, matching-based etc.

According to AIR 24 Gurkirat Singh, “For JEE Advanced, apart from NCERT, and study materials by FIITJEE, I am also going through subject-wise books, Physics- HC Verma, IE Irodov, Chemistry- MS Chouhan, RC Mukherjee, Mathematics- S L Loney. I am taking online mock tests on a daily basis, and solving sample papers, which helps to familiarise with paper patterns.”

Admit card link showing error?

While the link has been activated at the homepage, several candidates have been complaining that the link does not lead to an admit card window. While it is not clear as to why the error is being displayed, the candidates facing the glitch can try after some time. Further, students can also contact authorities in case the problem persists.

Result date, counselling rounds reduced

IIT JEE Advanced result will be released on October 5 and seat allocation will begin from October 8. Counseling will be done through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Interested and eligible candidates who have cleared JEE Main or will pass the JEE Advanced exams will be able to register at josaa.nic.in. This year, there will be six counselling rounds instead of seven

20% seats to be reserved for women

This year, the IITs will offer 20% of seats for female candidates. These are supernumerary seats, which means, these seats will be created additionally without making any change in existing seats. These supernumerary seats will be offered to only those female candidates who are declared qualified in JEE Advanced, admission will be awarded based on merit.

JEE Advanced 2021 might have a one-time provision

The Joint Admissions Board (JAB) will “surely” discuss increasing the number of attempts allowed for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced, however, it will be discussed for 2021 attempt, informed the IIT-Delhi director V Ramgoap Rao. He asked students to “please trust the process and the people involved. Please focus on your studies and your preparations for the 2020 exams.”

Decisions cannot be taken based on the number of tweets supporting a cause: IIT director

Assuring that a discussion on the same will take place before the JEE Advanced 2021 is held, the IIT director wrote on Twitter “Everyone in the Ministry is concerned about the situation and everyone wants to help the students in the best possible way. But decisions cannot be taken based on the number of tweets supporting a cause or the trolls on Twitter. In committees, a lot of facts and figures are considered and considerable discussions take place before arriving at a decision. All decisions will be in the best interest of the country.”

Why are students demanding more attempts at JEE Advanced?

The demand is being raised this year because many students claim that they were not able to prepare because the classes were shut. Further many did not have constant access to the internet for online classes.

SC lawyer wrote to Minister of Education asking increase in number of attempts for JEE Advance

Many parents and students have been raising demands of increasing the number of attempts for JEE Advanced. A Supreme Court lawyer had also written to the Supreme Court demanding an increase in the number of attempts for JEE Advanced. “Candidates get 6 attempts – two attempts, January and April, each year for three consecutive years for JEE Main while for JEE Advanced only two attempts are allowed as per rules. Even after qualifying JEE Main with top ranks in their third attempt, students are not permitted to appear in JEE Advanced. This is unjust, particularly to underprivileged and rural students.” the letter read.

No JEE Advanced exam centre abroad

Due to the current restrictions imposed on foreign travel and visa issuance, the IIT had decided not to set up any exam centre in foreign nations, however, all eligible candidates staying abroad were allowed to select their preferred choices from the list of exam cities in India.

Class 12 marks criteria relaxed for admission to IITs

Among the biggest change, this year is that IITs will not be considering board exams for admission of candidates. "Due to the partial cancellation of class XII exams by several Boards and the non-uniformity associated with the marks given, it is decided to relax the eligibility criteria for admission to IITs for JEE (Advanced) 2020 qualified candidates to obtain a PASS in class XII examination irrespective of the marks obtained," the IIT said. Earlier, students had to obtain 75% marks in class 12 board exams.

JEE Advanced rescheduled thrice

JEE Advanced was first scheduled to be held on May 17. It was then postponed again to be held on August 23 and then again rescheduled to be held on September 27. The postponement has been due to the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has also made several changes in the exam this year.

IIT alumni to help needy students with transport

The portal- eduride.in was launched following an appeal by the IIT-Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao. candidates who want a ride on the day of exam, needs to register themselves at the portal. Any person who wants to volunteer can also register themselves on the website. The volunteers may choose the option to drive the student or make a donation.

IIT asked alumni to help candidates with transport

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, has appealed to its students and alumni to help those appearing for the JEE-Advanced. The institute has also suggested to its students and alumni to come up with a registration portal for needy candidates and help take care of their logistics.

The exam will be held across 222 cities across India, up from 164 last year. The number of exam centres has been almost doubled from 600 last year to 1150 this year, as per the IIT. Masks and sanitisers are a must to appear for the exam.

Only 1.60 lakh applied for Advance

Out of the over 2.5 lakh candidates who were eligible to apply for the IIT entrance exam – JEE Advanced, only 1,60,864 students have applied, according to the official data released by the IIT-Delhi. This is the lowest in the past three years. In 2019, 1.73 lakh, and in 2018 1.65 lakh students had applied for the exam.

What to check on admit card?

The admit card wil have name of the candidate, roll number for JEE advanced, photograph, signature, date of birth, address for correspondence, and category. It will also have the name and address of the examination centre allotted to the candidate.
