Chennai: Tamil Nadu's Covid-19 death toll crossed the 8800 mark after 60 people succumbed to the infection on Sunday.

The death toll in the state touched 8811, according to the State media bulletin.

The State reported 5516 cases on Sunday, yet another day of under 6,000 cases.

This takes the total tally of cases to 5,41,993, the State media bulletin confirmed.

The positivity count has consistently been below the 6,000-mark for some time now, providing some relief to authorities after the easing of a state-wide lockdown on August 31.

Chennai reported fewer than 1,000 cases again with 996 people testing positive on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu’s capital has been the worst affected district in the state since March, with the formation of several Covid-19 clusters.

As many as 5206 people recovered from the infection on Sunday, and the total recoveries now stand at 486,479.

The state reported 84,338 tests on Sunday.
