The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has said that poultry farms cause pollution and they cannot be exempted from regulations. The NGT has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to re-issue the guidelines for classifying poultry farms into the 'green category' industry and exempt them under various laws. The NGT said that poultry farms are likely to cause environmental damage, which needs to be controlled.

Order to issue directions to CPCB again within three months

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice AK Goel has asked the CPCB to issue a new order within three months. If no new order is issued then all state pollution boards have to implement concrete mechanisms under the Air, Water, and Environmental Safety Act. The bench said that according to the report of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, poultry production is associated with various types of environmental pollutants. In addition, it attracts flies, dogs, and other insects, which spread the disease.

Poor management of waste, waste, and wastewater adversely affects the people living nearby. The NGT was hearing a petition by animal activist Gauri Mulekhi, who has demanded the cancellation of the CPCB guidelines, exempting the poultry farm from the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act.
