It was late afternoon when Tim found the postie’s note: “Sorry we missed you …” Missed him? He’d been home all day!

He was still fuming hours later, ranting to Mary about how the incident encapsulated “everything that’s wrong with this country!” “Yes, dear,” she said absently, sipping her wine.
Two days later, awaiting another delivery, Tim took a sick day and unfolded a picnic chair near the letterbox.
It was his civic duty, he figured, to keep the bastards honest. In the shadows of a wattle he waited, rehearsing his state of the union address.
