The Karnataka government has cleared the State’s tourism policy for 2020-25.
J C Madhuswamy, the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister said, “Today, Karnataka Tourism Policy 2020-25 was technically cleared by the Cabinet. The details of the policy will be unveiled by the Chief Minister later this month.”
The policy aims to boost tourism related to heritage, wildlife, spiritual, cultural, adventure, coastal, nature, health and agriculture. The state tourism department plans to offer subsidies which have been increased to Rs. 10 crore from Rs. 1.2 crore under the new policy concentrating on districts and non-traditional tourist circuits.
As per a senior official of the tourism department, “The main aim of the policy is to promote tourism at district-level and to attract more domestic/ international travelers to Karnataka’s interior.”
For generating revenue and for creating infrastructure, the policy plans to put forward subsidies for providing basic amenities like hotels, resorts, especially in sustainable tourism.
Regarding Covid-19’s impact on tourism, the official said, “Our summer season was a washout. Now the festival and winter looks bleak.”
The Cabinet also approved setting up a Lakkundi Development Authority for safeguarding the town’s historical aspects, particularly sculptures and inscriptions dating back to the 11th century belonging to the Kalyani Chalukya-era.
Madhuswamy said that Lakkundi has similar significance like Hampi. The Cabinet has decided to release Rs. 3 crore as financial support for starting work on forming an authority for developing the historical town.
Lakkundi town is located 12 kms from Gadag in North Karnataka and is popular for step wells (Kalyanis) and ancient temples.
