Former chief minister and Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday wrote to Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, requesting immediate lifting of the ban on onion exports. Fadnavis also held a telephonic conversation with Goyal to explain him the unrest among farmers due to the Centre’s decision.

“Maharashtra, which is the biggest onion producer state in the country, also exports onion to many countries. The demand for onion grown in Maharashtra is high internationally. Therefore, the Centre should consider the request and allow uninhibited export of onions,” he said.

Explained: Why the government has banned the export of onions

The Shetkari Sanghatana along with various farmers’ unions have taken to the street against the decision. In the last two days, exports of more than four quintals of onions, bound for various countries including Dubai, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, have been halted. Prices in domestic markets have dipped from Rs 35-40 per kg to Rs 25-Rs 30 per kg.

On Tuesday, NCP president Sharad Pawar had also written to Goyal urging the Centre to reconsider its decision to ban exports.

Supreme Court Grants Relief To Vedanta, Videocon In Ravva Oil Field Case

In a major setback to the central government and big relief to Vedanta Ltd. and Videocon, the Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a foreign arbitration award to recover $499 million, instead of $198 million capped by the Centre for Development of Ravva Oil and Gas fields off the Andhra Coast between 2000 and 2007.

The top court upheld Delhi High Court's order which refused to interfere with the arbitral award in production sharing contract (PSC) for Ravva oil fields in the Krishna Godavari basin. Vedanta (formerly Cairn India) and Videocon had entered into PSC for Ravva oil fields and as per the contract Vedanta and Videocon was allowed to recover $198 million. However, the government claimed that it had recovered $499 million.

Following the conflict between government and Vedanta, they entered into arbitration in Malaysia which favoured Vedanta. In July 2014, the Malaysian Court of Appeals upheld the arbitral award allowing additional recoveries to Vedanta.

After Delhi High Court refused to interfere with the arbitral award in favour of Vedanta, the centre moved the top court in June.

The Supreme Court in today's ruling said that Malaysian court rightly examined Ravva oil field arbitration award and arbitral award doesn't offend public policy of India as it is a subsequent event.

The top court added that enforcement court can't reassess evidence available.

Rights Body Gives Clean Chit To Hospital On Rhea Chakraborty Morgue Visit

Rhea Chakraborty has been arrested in a drugs case related to Sushant Singh Rajput's death

    Mumbai:

The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission has given a clean chit to the city-based Cooper Hospital and police over actor Rhea Chakraborty's alleged visit to the hospital's mortuary where actor Sushant Singh Rajput's body had been kept, an official said.

After going through the reports submitted by the city police as well as the hospital, it found that no "third party" had entered the prohibited area of the mortuary, the commission official said on Wednesday.

The commission had on August 25 issued a show-cause notice to the hospital and police after some news channels claimed that Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant Rajput's girlfriend, was allowed entry into the post-mortem room in the morgue in violation of norms.

"Both the agencies, particularly the hospital, submitted detailed reports with documents and photographs. No stranger or third party had been allowed in the post-mortem room. These are prohibited areas," the official said.

As per the hospital's dean, Ms Chakraborty might have been present in the waiting area for visitors and relatives when Sushant Rajput's body was taken away on June 15 for final rites after an autopsy, he said.

"The police had no role to play because once a body is handed over to the mortuary (for autopsy), they are not in the picture," he added.

"Police come into the picture after the post-mortem when the body is delivered to them, and later they hand it over to the relatives," the official said, adding that Sushant Rajput's body was handed over to his sister.

"Looking at all these aspects, the commission came to the conclusion that there was no breach (of norms) on the part of the dean or the police," he said.

Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead at his flat in suburban Bandra on June 14.

Ms Chakraborty, who is facing a CBI probe for alleged abetment of his suicide, was subsequently arrested in a drugs case related to the actor's death.

    Verdict

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S (GX531) is a power packed laptop that definitely deserves a closer look. Our review unit faced some performance issues, despite which, it was able to maintain impressive frame-rates in games. We wish it had better construction for the display panel, but in terms of performance, the Zephyrus S leaves little room for complaint.

Asus ROG Zephyrus S (GX531) detailed review

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S (GX531) is a 15” gaming laptop, which Asus claims is the thinnest 15-inch gaming machine right now. It sits less than an inch thick and measures 2.1 kilograms, which really isn’t a lot when you think about it. It packs that signature “Aero Active” hinge, where the bottom opens up by a few millimeters when the laptop is open, all to aid in better air flow. Seeing how the GX531 packs an Nvidia RTX 2070 with the Max-Q design, this machine will definitely need the extra cooling. We’ve had the laptop in our labs for some days now and after having put it through a bunch of tests, we finally know whether to recommend the laptop or not. Short answer, it's not simple. For the long answer, read on.

Processor Intel Core i7-8750H 2.2 GHz

    Build and Design

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S is all kinds of slick and sleek. With the lid closed, it measures less than an inch thick, which is quite a feat for a gaming machine. It was the primary reason for me to actually consider buying this laptop for personal use. When it's closed, it feels like an invincible tank.

Once the lid is open, another lid lifts up from the bottom, creating an opening just a few millimeters wide for the fans to pull in more air. The hinges, of both display and the metal plate that lifts from the bottom, are extremely solid and well built. They will not be the parts that left you down, but instead, it will be the metal plate itself. Holding the laptop while its open reveals just how thin and hence “spongy” this plate is. It’ll be very easy in prolonged use to cause some bends to appear on this plate. Similarly, the display panel itself is very “flexible”, exhibiting prominent wobbling when moved only from one edge. Having used metal in the lid, it was extremely disappointing to find the display panel be so flimsy.

The display lid is extremely flexible

The sturdiness of the GX531 comes from its base, which is milled out of a single piece of aluminium and is incredibly solid and leaves no room for complaint. The all-black paint job with copper trim is also quite an eye-catcher, besides all the RGB lighting on the keyboard and underneath the air vents.

At first glance, the Asus ROG Zephyrus is absolutely gorgeous to look at. Its sleek, all black and menacing. But once its open, and start to witness all the weak points. The bottom panel is incredibly thin and we feel that it will be easy to damage. The display too exhibits extreme “flexibility,” something we’re not too fond of. All in all, we’re led to believe that this power horse, if purchased, will require a little bit of careful handling.

    Display

The display panel on the Asus Zephyrus S (GX531) has a number of features worth boasting about. The fullHD panel has a refresh rate of 144Hz with a 3ms response time. Additionally, the display is Pantone certified, meaning it should be colour calibrated right out of the box. We used our Spyder colourimeter designed specifically for LCD displays and found Asus’s claims of “calibrated out of the box” to stand valid.

Pantone Validates FH IPS display with 144Hz refresh rate

With a peak brightness of 340 lux, the display is bright enough to game even outdoors. The matte coating definitely helps with the suppression of reflections and we’re glad that Asus has put a display of this calibre on the GX531. The extremely narrow bezels make it even more enjoyable to game on.

The display on the GX531 is definitely very impressive. If there was one thing missing, we’d say it would be Nvidia’s G-sync, but honestly, after hours of gaming on this machine, we didn’t really miss the feature.

    Keyboard, Trackpad and I/O

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S (GX531) features a regular keyboard with 1.2mm of key travel. Unlike the slightly curved keys, we found on the company’s Scar II (Review) laptop, the ones on the GX531 are totally flat. Oh, and you might just notice that the keyboard is placed towards the front edge of the body’s frame, a design choice that the Zephyrus line is rather famous for. This placement does take a lot of getting used to, and some would say, you never truly get used to it.

The Asus Zephyrus S continues the 'unique' ergonomics for the keyboard and trackpad

Typing on them is a decent experience, as they keys offer shallow travel with somewhat sharp. The keyboard island offers no flex, which is a good thing for sure, as it only lends to our earlier conclusion about the build quality. The keys unfortunately do not offer per-key RGB setting, but instead offers 4-zone RGB control.

The trackpad is placed to the right of the keyboard in portrait orientation. This is another Zephyrus signature design choice. I feel that this placement actually makes the trackpad usable while gaming or using the lasso tool in Photoshop. The individual and plush left & right click keys only further add to its usability. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good placement for the trackpad, making it very usable, but its not sensitive enough for fps gaming. Additionally, the trackpad also doubles up as the num-pad by the press of a key. Once engaged, red numbers appear on the trackpad, turning it into a num-pad. Its usable, but given the lack of any feedback, can be a little disconcerting to use at times. I found myself double checking my number entries after using the trackpad due to the lack of feedback.

Probably my biggest point of contention with the GX531 is its I/O selection. You get a Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 2 port with display port and power delivery. This is placed on the right side of the machine, along with a USB3.1 Gen2 Type A port. On the left side, you get a Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, along with 2 USB 2.0 ports. With only 3 Type A ports, there is absolutely no business for two of them to be USB2.0, especially seeing how Asus is marketing this to creative professionals as well. For a laptop that costs as much as the GX531, USB 2.0 ports are just unacceptable.

USB 2.0 in 2019? On a machine this expensive?

    Performance

Finally, onto the good stuff. Packed into this 16mm thin machine is an Intel Core i7-8750H paired with an Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q. There’s a 512GB NVMe drive that uses x4 PCIe lanes that’s pretty much the only upgradeable thing in this laptop. The board supports a maximum of 16GB of RAM, which the machines comes pre-installed with, so there’s no point of opening this up. Sadly, for those who get this machine, there’s no possibility of a performance boost in the future.

Now in terms of price and specifications, the GX531’s closest competitor that we have reviewed is the Alienware m15. So for all performance metrics, that’s our comparison.

Alienware m15 comes out ahead in most synthetic benchmarks

While gaming, we had the machine set to Turbo mode from with the Armoury Crate software. We ran our usual favourites and clocked the below numbers.

What was sorely disappointing was the issue of frame-drops every few minutes of the game play. We’d go from 70+fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider to barely 11fps for a few seconds, and then back up to 70+fps. We noticed this behavior in all our games and concluded that there was some kind of throttling going on. You can see the frame rates for some of the games in the charts below.

Gaming on the Asus Zephyrus S at 1080p, Ultra graphics

Gaming on the Asus Zephyrus S at 1080p, High graphics

Given the powerful components in the GX531, we expected the machine to be a hiccup-free performer. Sadly, for some reason, it stutters in every game that was played on it. We’ve reached out to Asus to verify if there was some issue with the review unit we received and will update this review with new information as it comes to light.

Another interesting aspect of benchmarking the GX531 was its internal drive. The laptop comes with an Intel 512GB NVMe drive utilising x4 PCIe lanes, but the read/write performance happened to be on the lower side. Read speeds peaked at 1709MB per second with write speeds maxing out at roughly 984MB per second.

    Thermals

Perhaps the most perplexing part of reviewing the Asus Zephyrus S (GX531) was its thermal performance, and how it would relate to the CPU-GPU throughput. Under full load, the heat being blown out the side was just 56 degrees. At idle, the system clocked a temperature of just 32 degrees. Notably, the system isn’t very loud when in idle, or even under a moderate load, but set it to turbo mode where the dual 12V fans spin at full speed, and we clocked almost 70 decibels of loudness. Either which way, the system is not getting hot enough for the heat to be the reason for throttling.

The bottom lifts when the laptop is opened, allowing for more air to be pulled in

The underside of the laptop also gets uncomfortably hot, meaning you won't be placing this machine on your lap for extended use for sure.

    Bottomline

The Asus Zephyrus S (GX531) manages to get a few things very right. It packs a very powerful set of components into a slim chassis, ideal for those who like to carry their gaming or editing machines around. The Pantone validated 144Hz display is great right out of the box. the keyboard will take plenty of getting used to, but the trackpad is definitely a strong point. What's definitely disappointing are the two USB 2.0 ports (should have been USB 3.0) and the flex present on the display panel. The metal plate that comprises the Aero Active cooler could have also been better. If you do get the Zephyrus S, you wont find any complaints in performance, but we do recommend some care in handling this machine.

Navalny Allies Hit Back After Russian Jab At His Popularity

Allies of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny reacted with scorn on Wednesday to comments by Russia that it would have made no sense for Moscow to poison an opponent whose popularity rating was so low.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 9:15 PM IST

MOSCOW: Allies of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny reacted with scorn on Wednesday to comments by Russia that it would have made no sense for Moscow to poison an opponent whose popularity rating was so low.

The 44-year-old opposition politician fell violently ill and collapsed last month while travelling from Siberia to Moscow and was airlifted to a Berlin hospital, where doctors found he had been poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent.

Germany says laboratories in three countries have established the presence of Novichok, and demanded an explanation from Moscow. Russia says it has yet to see evidence.

In a statement on its website, Russia’s permanent mission to the European Union said there would be no reason for Russia to poison Navalny with a military-grade nerve agent and then allow him to travel to Germany where the substance could be detected.

Quoting a July opinion poll, it continued: “What would be the reason for the Russian authorities to poison Alexei Navalny, taking into account that his actual popularity level hardly reaches 2%?”

Navalny’s chief of staff Leonid Volkov responded on his Telegram social media channel: “It’s as if they’re saying ‘If his rating was 20%, then we would have poisoned him.”

Navalny spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said results of regional elections at the weekend, in which candidates backed by Navalny gained seats in two Siberian cities, showed his support among Russians was much higher.

The Kremlin, facing calls from some western politicians to tighten sanctions on Moscow, has said it does not think poisoning Navalny would benefit anyone.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was wrong to link the affair to the near-complete Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, which German Chancellor Angela Merkel has faced calls to halt.

“It should stop being mentioned in the context of any politicization,” Peskov said, referring to Nord Stream 2. “This is a commercial project that is absolutely in line with the interests of both Russia and European Union countries, and primarily Germany.”

Navalny, who spent several weeks in a coma, on Tuesday shared a photograph showing him sitting up in his Berlin hospital bed, surrounded by his family. He said he could now breathe independently.

Opposition politician Dmitry Gudkov told Reuters he knew from Navalny’s team that his recovery would be lengthy.

“Great news that he will be back,” Gudkov said. “And Navalny will return to the country as a different Navalny, a world famous politician, and this will help all of us fight this regime.”

Overall the Honor 8 Pro is a good device for what it offers. The build and design of the phone is fantastic and everyday work happens very smoothly on the device. There isn’t a game or app that didn’t perform on the phone. The battery life is decent. If there is a downside, it’s the viewing angles and overall brightness of the display. The camera performs well in well-lit situations, but falls short in light photography.

Huawei Honor 8 Pro detailed review

The story for every great hero starts with a villain. The more intriguing, dangerous and exciting the villain, the more thrilling is the journey of the hero and his success. In the story of flagship smartphones, OnePlus emerged as the brand that gives birth to flagship killers. With the OnePlus 5 however, the price of the flagship killer has risen. At Rs 32,999, the 6GB OnePlus 5 is a great deal, but the success of OnePlus has put another company in an attractive position – that of being a OnePlus killer. We are talking about the Honor 8 Pro. On paper, it brings with it almost every spec and function to take on the OnePlus 5. Will the emergence of a new hero retire the old one?

Looks, design and build quality: A sexy design and no bulging camera

The Honor 8 Pro review unit we received is Navy Blue in colour and it makes the smartphone very attractive and appealing. Kept idle on a table, the device will definitely turn heads. Just like flagships of today the smartphone has an all metal body.

On the front, the smartphone has a 5.7-inch display with a 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. There are no physical buttons below the display keeping the back, home and multitasking buttons on-screen. Above the display, we have the earpiece and the front-facing camera. The bezels on the side of the display are quite thin and the Navy Blue colour just makes the phone pop. At the bottom of the device, you have the USB-C port, headphones jack, and the speaker grill. On the left, we have the Dual-SIM tray and the second SIM slot doubles up as a hybrid SIM slot. On the right, we have the volume rocker and the power button.

Coming to the rear of the Honor 8 Pro, the smartphone has a smooth metal back. It makes the phone slippery, but not as slippery as the Galaxy S8 which has a glass back. The fingerprint sensor rests at the back and is very conveniently located. The one place where the Honor 8 Pro gets more marks than the OnePlus 5 is how well they have fit the dual camera setup on the smartphone. There is no bulge and the two cameras merge seamlessly with the design of the smartphone. The only question that comes to mind here is why are the words “Dual Camera” written next to the two cameras? In the past, this is where Huawei has put the Leica branding when their smartphones boast of dual-Leica lenses. So just stating the obvious next to the lenses seems a bit odd.

The OnePlus 5 is 0.4mm thicker than the Honor 8 Pro, but the Honor 8 pro is about 3mm taller. The OnePlus 5 weighs 153 grams and the Honor 8 Pro weighs 184 grams. Despite such minute differences in height and thickness of the smartphones, the Honor 8 Pro has a 5.7-inch QHD display and sports a 4000mAh battery, whereas the OnePlus 5 has a 5.5-inch 1080p display and a 3300mAh battery.

Currently, among all the flagship smartphones available out there, the Samsung Galaxy S8 takes the prize of being the best-looking smartphone out there. The Honor 8 Pro doesn’t beat it, but proves that an all metal design mixed with some sexy colours can make for a very attractive proposition. Compared with the OnePlus 5, it’s definitely the sexier of the two.

5.7-inch 1440p IPS display: is resolution the only thing that matters?

Coming to the display of the Honor 8 Pro, like we mentioned, it has a 5.7-inch LTPS IPS LCD display with a 2560x1440p resolution. In our test, the display clocks a maximum of 458 lux brightness. To put things into perspective the OnePlus 5’s 1080p Optic AMOLED display has a maximum brightness of 750 lux. When it comes to real world performance however, the display of the Honor 8 Pro worked fine in indoor, outdoor, and dim-lit situations. The auto-brightness adapts well and the screen is very visible outdoors, on a fine July afternoon in the Noida heat.

When it comes to the colour reproduction on the display of the Honor 8, by default the display has a cool tone to it, which means that you will see hints of blue all over the place. The display settings of the smartphone offer three presets – default, warm and cool. A good thing is that you also have the ability to manually change the colour temperature of the display if you like. Setting the colour temperature to worm worked perfectly for us.

One of the biggest downsides of the display is that the viewing angles aren’t great. Watch the display dead center and everything looks great. Move around and you will realise that the viewing angles of the phone aren’t the best.

We watched a bunch of videos on the Honor 8 Pro, and apart from the viewing angles, the experience was good. In the Spiderman Homecoming trailer where city landscape looked lush and even Spidey’s red and blue suit looks vibrant. The the dark and gritty environments in the Death Stranding trailer also looked great. The audio output is loud enough for a bunch of people to huddle up and enjoy watching these trailers.

Overall, the content consumption on the display is a treat. Be it playing games or watching movies. The only downside is that the viewing angles aren’t great.

    EMUI 5.1

Straight out of the box, the Honor 8 Pro runs on Android 7.0 skinned with the EMUI 5.1. Those that have seen Honor's UI in action in the past will feel at home here. Since the smartphone has 6GB RAM, we didn’t encounter any EMUI related stutters in every day work, multitasking, gaming, so on and so forth.

The UI doesn’t have childish or cartoony icons anymore, and the number of preloaded themes on the device are enough to give it a more mature look. By default, there is no app drawer and all the apps are listed on the home screen, but if you are someone that likes the app drawer, you can get that by changing the home screen layout in the settings menu.

Overall, there is nothing to complain about the UI of the smartphone. There were no random crashes and the overall experience of interacting with the UI, multitasking and accessing the quick settings from the drop down was a breeze.

Performance: A beast on the inside?

Starting with everyday performance, there was no noticeable lag, hiccup, or problem with launching everyday apps and playing games. Be it multitasking, browsing and heavy gaming, the Honor 8 Pro can handle anything you throw at it. There were no serious heating issues with the smartphone either. Yes, when you play a heavy game like Asphalt 8 for a long period of time, the phone does get warm, but that’s normal as the metal back is dispensing heat. There was nothing alarming about the temperature the smartphone reached. Moving to the fingerprint sensor at the back, it is blazing fast and accurate. It unlocks in a heartbeat and that is very good.

Below is a look at how the Honor 8 Pro performs compared to its competition when it comes to benchmarks.

    Honor 8 Pro: Dual camera

Coming to the camera, just like so many other Huawei and Honor smartphones, the Honor 8 pro sports a dual camera setup. Unlike other Huawei products we’ve seen, this one doesn’t house the Leica branding. Both the RGB and monochrome sensors on the Honor 8 Pro are 12 megapixels. The logic behind two sensors remains the same as previous Huawei devices – more light for better pictures. With some software mumbo jumbo, the Honor 8 Pro combines data from both sensors for good looking images.

When it comes to the performance of the rear camera, in well-lit situations, the camera clicks good photos. The details are good and the colour reproduction is quite accurate. But, when it comes to low light, the loss of colour and details is obvious. The images clicked in low light are noisy too. The bokeh effect in well-lit situations comes out very well. There are good details in images, and the fact that you can control the level of blur in post-production is nice. From a subtle effect to an absolute blur the effect is impressive. Overall, the camera performs well in good lighting conditions, but not the best when it comes to low light. To put things in perspective, the Honor 8 Pro has a better camera when it comes to well-lit situation and bokeh effect, when compared to the OnePlus 5, but the OnePlus 5 has a better camera for low light photography. Below are some camera samples.

    Battery life

Like we’ve mentioned earlier, the device has a 4000mAh battery tucked into that slim profile. Considering the device has a 2K display, you can expect some intensive apps like games and Netflix to guzzle the battery. I typically lost close to 15% battery with under 1 hour of Netflix viewing. You can expect considerable battery drain if you are a heavy gamer too. In both cases, the brightness was set to auto. However, if you are a basic user who makes calls, some texting, YouTubing, a bit of social media and some light games and web browsing, you will be left with 10 to 20% battery at the end of the day, depending on usage. In our PC Mark battery test the device lasted for 517 minutes. To put things into perspective, the OnePlus 5 lasted for 750 minutes.

    Bottom Line

Overall the Honor 8 Pro is a good device for what it offers. The build and design of the phone are fantastic and everyday work happens very smoothly on the device. There isn’t a game or app that didn’t perform on the phone. The battery life is decent. If there is a downside, it’s the viewing angles and overall brightness of the display. The camera offers good performs in well-lit situations, but isn't great for low-light photography.

So is this the OnePlus 5 killer we’ve been waiting for? Well, let’s broaden the horizon shall we. The Honor 8 Pro is priced at Rs 29,999. The OnePlus 5 starts at Rs. 32,999. Other smartphones in this price bracket include the Oppo F3 Plus and Moto Z2 Play. If you are looking for some modular enhancements, then you can consider the Moto Z2 Play, it is an interesting product. If you are looking for raw power and a brighter display, then the OnePlus 5 is the way to go. But if a sleek and sexy device is what's on your mind, and stock Android is not a must, then you can consider the Honor 8 Pro. It has all the makings of a phone that is great value for the buyer’s money.

President Trump told a voter he did not downplay the coronavirus in the early days of his administration’s Covid-19 response — though he’s been heard on tape saying he did — during an ABC News town on Tuesday.

“If you believe it's the president's responsibility to protect America, why would you downplay a pandemic that is known to disproportionately harm low-income families and minority communities,” a voter asked Trump.

Trump responded, “Yeah, well I didn't downplay it. I actually, in many ways I up-played it in terms of action.” The voter appeared to try to follow up and remind the president he acknowledged downplaying the threat of the coronavirus pandemic in a taped interview with journalist Bob Woodward earlier this year.

The town hall, hosted by George Stephanopoulos in Philadelphia, is one of the rare occasions Trump has sat down for questions with a news network other than Fox News. It is also one of the few moments the president has had to interact with undecided voters in a moderated setting. The topics ranged from health care to the pandemic to policing, among other areas. Trump and Stephanopoulos as well as voters, who wore masks, were socially distanced.

Trump is in a bare-knuckled re-election battle against former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee, while his poll numbers sagging as he continues to get low marks from voters for how he handled the response to the virus.

Trump’s about-face on his administration’s coronavirus response comes as taped interviews with journalist Bob Woodward were recently released in which the president acknowledged downplaying the threat, according to an account of Woodward's new book.

“I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down because I don't want to create a panic," Trump said in a March 19 call with Woodward, according to an audio clip posted Wednesday on The Washington Post's website. The newspaper obtained a copy of the book, "Rage," which was released this week.

In the same interview, Trump also acknowledged that the disease was more deadly than he publicly admitted.

"Now it's turning out it's not just old people, Bob. But just today, and yesterday, some startling facts came out. It's not just old, older," Trump said, according to an audio clip, and then added, "young people, too, plenty of young people."

During the ABC town hall, Trump continued to misrepresent his administration's response to the virus and blame China.

"We've worked very hard on the pandemic," Trump told a conservative voter with an underlying health condition who criticized the administration's virus response. "We've worked very hard. It came off from China, they should have never let it happen."

Trump also reiterated his claim that the virus would eventually disappear, pointing to a “herd mentality” that would develop, which he likely meant to be "herd immunity."

Trump was also pressed by a local pastor, who is Black, on race. Trump was asked when was America ever "great," referring to Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again," which the voter said, “pushes us (Black Americans) back to a time in which we cannot identify with such greatness." He also pressed Trump on addressing systemic racism.

"And we have not been seeing a change, quite frankly, under your administration, under the Obama administration, under the Bush, under the Clinton, the very same things happen, the same systems and cycles continue to ensue," the voter said.

Trump responded, "I hope there's not a race problem. I can tell you, there's none with me."

The president then pivoted discussing his poll numbers among minorities and Black and Latino unemployment numbers under his administration. Trump has been struggling with Black voters, who overwhelmingly support Biden, according to polls.

Trump was later pressed on the killings of Black Americans by police and how they are three times more likely to be killed during an encounter with an officer and downplayed systemic racism in law enforcement. Trump said the deaths of George Floyd in Minnesota, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, and the recent shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin were "tragic events" but largely defended the police.

"I can only say this, that the police in this country have done generally a great job," Trump said.

One of the testiest moments of the town hall was the discussion of health care. A voter with a pre-existing condition pressed the president on his health care plan and his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which protected pre-existing conditions.

Trump claimed to the voter that he is preserving pre-existing conditions, even as his administration argues in court against Obamacare. This prompted Stephanopoulos to jump into fact check the president in real-time.

"You've been trying to strike down pre-existing conditions," Stephanopoulos said. "You're striking down the whole law."

Despite the pushback, Trump continues to claim he has a health care plan, despite the difficulty of getting legislation through the Democratic-controlled House, which has tried to safeguard the Affordable Care Act. Health care is a top issue for voters in the 2020 election.

“I have it all ready, and it’s a much better plan for you, and it’s a much better plan," Trump said, without giving more details.

Trump also pushed back at a voter who asked if he would be "more presidential" in his second term if he is re-elected.

“I'm fighting a battle. It's a big battlefield, and I have a lot of forces against me," Trump said. "Sometimes you don’t have time to be totally, as you would say, presidential. You have to get things done."

    BUY Acer Predator Triton 300

Acer Predator Triton 300 detailed review

Acer, it appears, is finally catching up to the competition in terms of web presence and product portfolio strength. In December, the popular Taiwan-based PC manufacturer launched its ConceptD series of laptops for creators, namely the ConceptD 7 Pro, ConceptD 7, and ConceptD 5. Started last year, ConceptD is an Acer sub-brand that focusses on products specifically created for professional artists and designers. The latest ConceptD 7 Ezel Convertible series, which the company showcased at CES 2020, sports an Intel 10th Gen Core series chip with Nvidia Quadro RTX graphics. You can read more about that here.

Come to think of it, December 2019 was an extremely important month for Acer in India. Not only did it mark the launch of the ConceptD series in the country but it also marked the launch of the Acer online store, which finally gives customers the option to buy products directly from an official Acer portal without having to choose between models listed on the likes of Flipkart and Amazon. The new online store, which is located at store.acer.com, is currently populated with deals on popular laptops such as the Nitro 5 and Aspire 3. Interestingly and maybe even worryingly, there’s no sign of the Predator Triton 300 on it. Nonetheless, let’s take a closer look at Acer’s newest gaming laptop.

    Performance

Though not available on the Acer online store, the Triton 300 is listed on Flipkart for Rs 79,990. For that money, you get the laptop with an Intel 9th Gen Core i7 CPU with 8GB of RAM. Storage is handled by a 256GB solid-state drive working alongside a 1TB hard drive. Complementing the CPU is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card with 4GB of dedicated video RAM. Now the GTX 1650 is, as we all know, the base model in Nvidia’s 2019 line-up of laptop GPUs. Our review unit, on the other hand, came equipped with the same Intel 9th Gen Core i7 and GTX 1650 chips but a more generous 16GB of RAM. Storage was taken care of by a WD 512GB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive with no hard drive to accompany it. This variant of the Triton 300 is expected to make it to online stores like Flipkart soon.

Opening up the base panel revealed a fairly tidy arrangement of components with enough room for expansion. The CFL Auris motherboard on the review unit had a total of two DDR4 SDRAM slots, one of which was eaten up by the Kingston 16GB chip. The motherboard also had two M.2 slots for storage, one of which was occupied by the Western Digital SN720 512GB chip. While the motherboard had space for a 2.5-inch hard drive, there was no caddy fitted on our review unit. This meant that if we wanted to expand storage, we’d have been forced to get another M.2 solid-state drive. To the right of the M.2 slots was a Killer 1650X Wi-Fi 6 card.

Our review unit with a 512GB M.2 SSD lacked a hard drive caddy

The empty RAM slot is a good idea

You can throw in up to two M.2 SSDs and a 2.5-inch hard drive

The review unit performed quite well on our synthetic benchmark tests. On PCMark 8’s Conventional Creative test the Triton 300 scored 4001 points, which is well ahead of what was scored by the FX505DY and FX705DT from Asus’ 2019 AMD Ryzen-powered TUF Gaming line-up. On 3DMark’s Fire Strike and Sky Diver the Triton 300 picked up 8163 and 24350 points, respectively. Again, both scores are well above those picked up by the FX505DY and FX705DT. For reference, you can find our review of the 15-inch FX505DY here and the 17-inch FX705DT here.

Everyday performance of the Triton 300 was more than up to the mark. I was able to run multiple instances of common applications such as Word, Excel, Chrome, File Explorer, and WhatsApp for PC across multiple virtual desktops with noticeable ease. Even with background game downloads happening on Steam or Origin, I didn’t notice any distinguishable drop in performance. On one occasion, I was able to export 100 image files on Adobe Lightroom Classic CC in about 5 minutes. In summary, the Triton 300 offers great performance for everyday tasks, including heavy browsing, heavy file transfers, and online photo editing.

    Gaming

Gaming on the Triton 300 was a pleasurable experience. The review unit clocked far better frame rates than the FX505DY or FX705DT. I ran a bunch of games on the laptop in its native screen resolution of Full HD first on Medium graphics settings and then on High (i.e., one notch above Medium) to compare frame rates. V-Sync was turned off across all titles. Doom ran more than comfortably on Medium at an average frame rate of 103 frames per second but slipped to 95 on High. Battlefield V managed 68 frames per second on Medium before falling to 57 on High. Apex Legends clocked an average of 93 frames per second on Medium and 85 frames per second on High.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s internal benchmarking utility reported an average frame rate of 55 frames per second on Medium settings and a negligibly lower 51 frames per second on High settings. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice—which is probably the most graphically taxing game on our list—managed 69 frames per second on Medium but fell to 54 frames per second on High. Finally, Crysis 3 ran at an average frame rate of 96 frames per second on Medium before falling to 73 on High. All these games ran on the Triton 300 with consistent smoothness. As V-Sync was disabled, these games—especially Battlefield V—displayed a fair bit of screen tearing.

At room temperatures of around 14 degrees C, the Triton 300 was well behaved. With heavy CPU and GPU activity happening on the inside, the WASD keys registered about 36.2 degrees C on average and the heat vents on the sides saw about 42 degrees C on average. With both fans spinning at max speed, the Triton 300 was noticeably noisy in the office but it wasn’t as noisy as the slimmer Asus Zephyrus G GA502.

The Triton 300 is a cool cat for the most part

Gaming, on the whole, is a very enjoyable experience on the Triton 300. On one occasion, I played Metro Exodus in Ultra (the highest possible graphics settings, not counting Extreme) and saw very playable frame rates (between 40 and 60 frames per second). All that said, I don’t see why Acer hasn’t lined its Triton 300 stable up with other GPU options apart from the entry-level GTX 1650. An RTX 2060-powered Triton 300 would’ve been a good match against the Lenovo Legion Y540. You can read our review of that laptop here.

Pressing Turbo pushes both fans to about 6,000rpm

    Battery

The Triton 300 comes with a quad-cell 58.75Wh non-removable lithium-ion battery, which is frankly not too dependable if you travel a lot. On our standard battery benchmark test, the review unit managed a middling 2 hours, 22 minutes. The FX505DY and FX705DT, by contrast, managed 3 hours, 30 minutes and 4 hours, 45 minutes, on the same test with the exact same parameters, respectively. Sadly, the review unit performed no better on our everyday test runs. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, the laptop lost battery charge from 100 to 19 per cent in 2 hours, 32 minutes. During this time, the laptop was tasked with intense browsing and background music playback. When I brought the screen brightness down from 75 per cent to 55, things improved quite a bit. In summary, don’t expect over four hours of continuous battery life from the Triton 300.

    Display, Audio, and IO

The Triton 300 comes with a 15.6-inch ‘ComfyView’ LED-backlit IPS LCD panel with Full HD resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. Colours on the panel appear a bit washed out (especially when the screen brightness is pushed to max) but not to a point where it becomes noticeable while consuming content. On the bright side (sorry for the pun), the screen brightness is sufficient for most indoor and outdoor spots. In addition, the matte finish on top of the display ensures overhead lights (in conference rooms, etc.) don’t become a bother while working. It’s a fine panel for work and play alike.

Colours are a bit washed out but that doesn't get in the way of gaming

The Triton 300 sports two down-firing speakers on its base panel. The sound from them is rather tinny for long sessions of music playback but they should get the job done if you're watching a quick video clip on YouTube. While there's noticeable stereo separation in them, they lack volume. So, if you're trying to show your friends a new game trailer in say, an empty classroom, you might need an external Bluetooth speaker. For serious gaming, you should definitely get yourself a good pair of headphones.

Speakers are tinny and lack volume

The Triton 300’s audio setup is powered by Waves MaxxAudio, which means there’s a bundled app of the same name to control the equaliser and surround sound settings. The in-app sound settings include ‘Revive’ and ‘Reduce Noise’, which work pretty well. In addition, there’s a sound technology that works only when the headphones are plugged in. Called Waves Nx, the technology uses the laptop’s webcam to track the movements of your head so it can make the sound “follow” you virtually, thus giving you the feeling there are fixed speakers on the laptop. I must say that this feature works quite well even if it requires the webcam to be running at all times.

Waves Nx tech uses webcam to create the effect of a virtual room

The Triton 300 comes with plenty of ports to get you hooked up to accessories easily. On the left side of its body, we see a LAN port (with a spring-loaded flap), a Mini DisplayPort, a full-size HDMI port, USB-C 3.1, and a couple of USB-A 3.1 ports (one of which can juice up smartphones even during sleep). Oh, and there's a Kensington Lock Slot for added security. On the right side, we see a proprietary round-pin power port, a USB-A 2.0 port, and a single 3.5mm audio jack for headsets. The inclusion of an SD Card slot would’ve made life easier for users who frequently edit photos and videos.

Acer has equipped the Triton 300 with a Killer E2500 Ethernet Controller and a Killer AX1650 Wi-Fi 6 module, both of which take advantage of Killer's DoubleShot Pro technology to let the user switch between Ethernet and Wi-Fi for specific online tasks. For example, the user could reserve the faster Ethernet line for video streaming and use the slower Wi-Fi connection for game downloads. The laptop sports a webcam on top of the display but lacks a fingerprint scanner for faster log-ins.

    Keyboard and Touchpad

The Triton 300's keyboard is a mixed bag in that it has a few good qualities and a few bad. Going for it are the large, clearly marked keys with multiple brightness settings. There's a numpad on the right side with dedicated Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys. There’s also a dedicated shortcut button to bring up the bundled PredatorSense app. Now, this app lets the user set a custom speed for both fans individually, control GPU overclocking, and manage the lighting profiles on the keyboard's four-zone RGB lighting. Essential keys, like the WASD and arrow keys, allow more light to pass through for easier recognition while gaming.

The four-zone RGB-backlit keyboard has mostly good qualities

Letting the keyboard down are the hardness of the keys and the badly programmed dedicated Turbo button. Let me explain: the keys have ample travel but are a little resistant to keypresses. Acer could have made the setup a tad softer, in my opinion. The Turbo button, on the other hand, is a different sort of problem. Pressing it once makes the two internal fans spool up to max speed but pressing it a second time does absolutely nothing. In other words, it can only enable the Turbo fan profile but not disable it. Despite these flaws, it's a pretty good keyboard for work and play alike. What’s more, it looks fantastic when the ambient light is dimmed.

Turbo button enables max fan speed but can't disable

The Triton 300 comes with a large precision touchpad that works brilliantly for pointing, tapping, scrolling, and dragging with multiple fingers. Because Windows 10 recognises it as a precision unit, there's no need to install a third-party driver or utility to make the most of the touchpad's gesture control. Unlike the unit on Asus' TUF Gaming models, this one does not show any signs of unnecessary play when a finger lands on the surface. The two click keys under the touchpad surface, too, are easy to press. All in all, it's a fine input device for when you decide to leave your usual gaming mouse behind.

Precision touchpad is easy to use

    Build and Design

The Triton 300 comes clad in an all-metal cover with a tasteful blue-black finish that sets the laptop apart in its own quiet, calm way. The laptop's overall design is subtle but not as subtle as the Lenovo Legion Y540's. The brightly backlit Predator logo on the top cover and the aggressive cuts on the rear heat vents are a dead giveaway that it's a machine built for gaming. The clipped corners of the top cover and base panel, too, add to the laptop's identity. While the laptop offers a fair amount of grip, it does not go easy on the user's arm muscles. Weighing in at 2.5 kilogrammes, the Triton 300 is quite a heavy brick to carry around.

Neat blue paint job on the vents inside

Opening the lid of the Triton 300 is a one-hand operation but it easily demonstrates just how bendy the slim panel is. A similar amount of flex is seen on the keyboard as well when the keys are tapped hard. The 15.6-inch screen with a matte finish is surrounded by fairly thick bezels all around. The top bezel is home to the webcam and a dual-array microphone. The keyboard island, which lacks a fingerprint sensor, manages to look elegant thanks to the four-zone RGB lighting on the keyboard and the neat chrome finish around the touchpad. Despite the noticeable flex on some of its panels, the Triton 300 manages to come up as one of the better built mid-range gaming machines.

    Bottom Line

The Acer Predator Triton 300 is easily one of the best GTX 1650-powered gaming laptops we have seen since last year, especially in terms of CPU and GPU performance, but it’s not without its faults. Its screen could use a bit more colour, its speakers, a lot more volume, and its 2.5-kilogramme build, some slimming down. Luckily, all those flaws can be overlooked if all you care about is consistent performance from its well-stacked internals. The GTX 1650 graphics card inside matches well with the Intel 9th Gen Core i7 CPU to offer a pleasurable gaming experience on most popular AAA titles as long as you’re not adamant about pushing that slider to Ultra in video settings, leave alone VR.

The variant currently available in India has 8GB RAM. Storage comes from a 256GB SSD + 1TB hard drive

In terms of numbers alone, the Acer Predator Triton 300 pushes past the two Asus TUF Gaming models we saw last year—the FX505DY and FX705DT. So, why then, do I feel a bit unsure about recommending the Acer over the two Asus models? It has something to do with the fact that this review unit is different in configuration from the variants that sell in the market. The Triton 300 listed on Flipkart and the nearest Acer Mall (as of writing this review) has half the RAM available on the review unit and dual-disk storage, so I’m not sure how well it will hold up against the TUF Gaming series, or even a GTX 1650-powered Legion Lenovo Y540. If you’re particular about getting the Acer Predator Triton 300 with the exact same specs as our review unit, then you'll have to wait till it pops up in the market. It's expected to go on sale sometime soon. Acer, unfortunately, has not shared the exact price of this unit.
