Verdict

Overall the Honor 8 Pro is a good device for what it offers. The build and design of the phone is fantastic and everyday work happens very smoothly on the device. There isn’t a game or app that didn’t perform on the phone. The battery life is decent. If there is a downside, it’s the viewing angles and overall brightness of the display. The camera performs well in well-lit situations, but falls short in light photography.

Huawei Honor 8 Pro detailed review

The story for every great hero starts with a villain. The more intriguing, dangerous and exciting the villain, the more thrilling is the journey of the hero and his success. In the story of flagship smartphones, OnePlus emerged as the brand that gives birth to flagship killers. With the OnePlus 5 however, the price of the flagship killer has risen. At Rs 32,999, the 6GB OnePlus 5 is a great deal, but the success of OnePlus has put another company in an attractive position – that of being a OnePlus killer. We are talking about the Honor 8 Pro. On paper, it brings with it almost every spec and function to take on the OnePlus 5. Will the emergence of a new hero retire the old one?

Looks, design and build quality: A sexy design and no bulging camera

The Honor 8 Pro review unit we received is Navy Blue in colour and it makes the smartphone very attractive and appealing. Kept idle on a table, the device will definitely turn heads. Just like flagships of today the smartphone has an all metal body.

On the front, the smartphone has a 5.7-inch display with a 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. There are no physical buttons below the display keeping the back, home and multitasking buttons on-screen. Above the display, we have the earpiece and the front-facing camera. The bezels on the side of the display are quite thin and the Navy Blue colour just makes the phone pop. At the bottom of the device, you have the USB-C port, headphones jack, and the speaker grill. On the left, we have the Dual-SIM tray and the second SIM slot doubles up as a hybrid SIM slot. On the right, we have the volume rocker and the power button.

Coming to the rear of the Honor 8 Pro, the smartphone has a smooth metal back. It makes the phone slippery, but not as slippery as the Galaxy S8 which has a glass back. The fingerprint sensor rests at the back and is very conveniently located. The one place where the Honor 8 Pro gets more marks than the OnePlus 5 is how well they have fit the dual camera setup on the smartphone. There is no bulge and the two cameras merge seamlessly with the design of the smartphone. The only question that comes to mind here is why are the words “Dual Camera” written next to the two cameras? In the past, this is where Huawei has put the Leica branding when their smartphones boast of dual-Leica lenses. So just stating the obvious next to the lenses seems a bit odd.

The OnePlus 5 is 0.4mm thicker than the Honor 8 Pro, but the Honor 8 pro is about 3mm taller. The OnePlus 5 weighs 153 grams and the Honor 8 Pro weighs 184 grams. Despite such minute differences in height and thickness of the smartphones, the Honor 8 Pro has a 5.7-inch QHD display and sports a 4000mAh battery, whereas the OnePlus 5 has a 5.5-inch 1080p display and a 3300mAh battery.

Currently, among all the flagship smartphones available out there, the Samsung Galaxy S8 takes the prize of being the best-looking smartphone out there. The Honor 8 Pro doesn’t beat it, but proves that an all metal design mixed with some sexy colours can make for a very attractive proposition. Compared with the OnePlus 5, it’s definitely the sexier of the two.

5.7-inch 1440p IPS display: is resolution the only thing that matters?

Coming to the display of the Honor 8 Pro, like we mentioned, it has a 5.7-inch LTPS IPS LCD display with a 2560x1440p resolution. In our test, the display clocks a maximum of 458 lux brightness. To put things into perspective the OnePlus 5’s 1080p Optic AMOLED display has a maximum brightness of 750 lux. When it comes to real world performance however, the display of the Honor 8 Pro worked fine in indoor, outdoor, and dim-lit situations. The auto-brightness adapts well and the screen is very visible outdoors, on a fine July afternoon in the Noida heat.

When it comes to the colour reproduction on the display of the Honor 8, by default the display has a cool tone to it, which means that you will see hints of blue all over the place. The display settings of the smartphone offer three presets – default, warm and cool. A good thing is that you also have the ability to manually change the colour temperature of the display if you like. Setting the colour temperature to worm worked perfectly for us.

One of the biggest downsides of the display is that the viewing angles aren’t great. Watch the display dead center and everything looks great. Move around and you will realise that the viewing angles of the phone aren’t the best.

We watched a bunch of videos on the Honor 8 Pro, and apart from the viewing angles, the experience was good. In the Spiderman Homecoming trailer where city landscape looked lush and even Spidey’s red and blue suit looks vibrant. The the dark and gritty environments in the Death Stranding trailer also looked great. The audio output is loud enough for a bunch of people to huddle up and enjoy watching these trailers.

Overall, the content consumption on the display is a treat. Be it playing games or watching movies. The only downside is that the viewing angles aren’t great.

EMUI 5.1

Straight out of the box, the Honor 8 Pro runs on Android 7.0 skinned with the EMUI 5.1. Those that have seen Honor's UI in action in the past will feel at home here. Since the smartphone has 6GB RAM, we didn’t encounter any EMUI related stutters in every day work, multitasking, gaming, so on and so forth.

The UI doesn’t have childish or cartoony icons anymore, and the number of preloaded themes on the device are enough to give it a more mature look. By default, there is no app drawer and all the apps are listed on the home screen, but if you are someone that likes the app drawer, you can get that by changing the home screen layout in the settings menu.

Overall, there is nothing to complain about the UI of the smartphone. There were no random crashes and the overall experience of interacting with the UI, multitasking and accessing the quick settings from the drop down was a breeze.

Performance: A beast on the inside?

Starting with everyday performance, there was no noticeable lag, hiccup, or problem with launching everyday apps and playing games. Be it multitasking, browsing and heavy gaming, the Honor 8 Pro can handle anything you throw at it. There were no serious heating issues with the smartphone either. Yes, when you play a heavy game like Asphalt 8 for a long period of time, the phone does get warm, but that’s normal as the metal back is dispensing heat. There was nothing alarming about the temperature the smartphone reached. Moving to the fingerprint sensor at the back, it is blazing fast and accurate. It unlocks in a heartbeat and that is very good.

Below is a look at how the Honor 8 Pro performs compared to its competition when it comes to benchmarks.

Honor 8 Pro: Dual camera

Coming to the camera, just like so many other Huawei and Honor smartphones, the Honor 8 pro sports a dual camera setup. Unlike other Huawei products we’ve seen, this one doesn’t house the Leica branding. Both the RGB and monochrome sensors on the Honor 8 Pro are 12 megapixels. The logic behind two sensors remains the same as previous Huawei devices – more light for better pictures. With some software mumbo jumbo, the Honor 8 Pro combines data from both sensors for good looking images.

When it comes to the performance of the rear camera, in well-lit situations, the camera clicks good photos. The details are good and the colour reproduction is quite accurate. But, when it comes to low light, the loss of colour and details is obvious. The images clicked in low light are noisy too. The bokeh effect in well-lit situations comes out very well. There are good details in images, and the fact that you can control the level of blur in post-production is nice. From a subtle effect to an absolute blur the effect is impressive. Overall, the camera performs well in good lighting conditions, but not the best when it comes to low light. To put things in perspective, the Honor 8 Pro has a better camera when it comes to well-lit situation and bokeh effect, when compared to the OnePlus 5, but the OnePlus 5 has a better camera for low light photography. Below are some camera samples.

Battery life

Like we’ve mentioned earlier, the device has a 4000mAh battery tucked into that slim profile. Considering the device has a 2K display, you can expect some intensive apps like games and Netflix to guzzle the battery. I typically lost close to 15% battery with under 1 hour of Netflix viewing. You can expect considerable battery drain if you are a heavy gamer too. In both cases, the brightness was set to auto. However, if you are a basic user who makes calls, some texting, YouTubing, a bit of social media and some light games and web browsing, you will be left with 10 to 20% battery at the end of the day, depending on usage. In our PC Mark battery test the device lasted for 517 minutes. To put things into perspective, the OnePlus 5 lasted for 750 minutes.

Bottom Line

Overall the Honor 8 Pro is a good device for what it offers. The build and design of the phone are fantastic and everyday work happens very smoothly on the device. There isn’t a game or app that didn’t perform on the phone. The battery life is decent. If there is a downside, it’s the viewing angles and overall brightness of the display. The camera offers good performs in well-lit situations, but isn't great for low-light photography.

So is this the OnePlus 5 killer we’ve been waiting for? Well, let’s broaden the horizon shall we. The Honor 8 Pro is priced at Rs 29,999. The OnePlus 5 starts at Rs. 32,999. Other smartphones in this price bracket include the Oppo F3 Plus and Moto Z2 Play. If you are looking for some modular enhancements, then you can consider the Moto Z2 Play, it is an interesting product. If you are looking for raw power and a brighter display, then the OnePlus 5 is the way to go. But if a sleek and sexy device is what's on your mind, and stock Android is not a must, then you can consider the Honor 8 Pro. It has all the makings of a phone that is great value for the buyer’s money.

President Trump told a voter he did not downplay the coronavirus in the early days of his administration’s Covid-19 response — though he’s been heard on tape saying he did — during an ABC News town on Tuesday.

“If you believe it's the president's responsibility to protect America, why would you downplay a pandemic that is known to disproportionately harm low-income families and minority communities,” a voter asked Trump.

Trump responded, “Yeah, well I didn't downplay it. I actually, in many ways I up-played it in terms of action.” The voter appeared to try to follow up and remind the president he acknowledged downplaying the threat of the coronavirus pandemic in a taped interview with journalist Bob Woodward earlier this year.

The town hall, hosted by George Stephanopoulos in Philadelphia, is one of the rare occasions Trump has sat down for questions with a news network other than Fox News. It is also one of the few moments the president has had to interact with undecided voters in a moderated setting. The topics ranged from health care to the pandemic to policing, among other areas. Trump and Stephanopoulos as well as voters, who wore masks, were socially distanced.

Trump is in a bare-knuckled re-election battle against former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee, while his poll numbers sagging as he continues to get low marks from voters for how he handled the response to the virus.

Trump’s about-face on his administration’s coronavirus response comes as taped interviews with journalist Bob Woodward were recently released in which the president acknowledged downplaying the threat, according to an account of Woodward's new book.

“I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down because I don't want to create a panic," Trump said in a March 19 call with Woodward, according to an audio clip posted Wednesday on The Washington Post's website. The newspaper obtained a copy of the book, "Rage," which was released this week.

In the same interview, Trump also acknowledged that the disease was more deadly than he publicly admitted.

"Now it's turning out it's not just old people, Bob. But just today, and yesterday, some startling facts came out. It's not just old, older," Trump said, according to an audio clip, and then added, "young people, too, plenty of young people."

During the ABC town hall, Trump continued to misrepresent his administration's response to the virus and blame China.

"We've worked very hard on the pandemic," Trump told a conservative voter with an underlying health condition who criticized the administration's virus response. "We've worked very hard. It came off from China, they should have never let it happen."

Trump also reiterated his claim that the virus would eventually disappear, pointing to a “herd mentality” that would develop, which he likely meant to be "herd immunity."

Trump was also pressed by a local pastor, who is Black, on race. Trump was asked when was America ever "great," referring to Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again," which the voter said, “pushes us (Black Americans) back to a time in which we cannot identify with such greatness." He also pressed Trump on addressing systemic racism.

"And we have not been seeing a change, quite frankly, under your administration, under the Obama administration, under the Bush, under the Clinton, the very same things happen, the same systems and cycles continue to ensue," the voter said.

Trump responded, "I hope there's not a race problem. I can tell you, there's none with me."

The president then pivoted discussing his poll numbers among minorities and Black and Latino unemployment numbers under his administration. Trump has been struggling with Black voters, who overwhelmingly support Biden, according to polls.

Trump was later pressed on the killings of Black Americans by police and how they are three times more likely to be killed during an encounter with an officer and downplayed systemic racism in law enforcement. Trump said the deaths of George Floyd in Minnesota, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, and the recent shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin were "tragic events" but largely defended the police.

"I can only say this, that the police in this country have done generally a great job," Trump said.

One of the testiest moments of the town hall was the discussion of health care. A voter with a pre-existing condition pressed the president on his health care plan and his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which protected pre-existing conditions.

Trump claimed to the voter that he is preserving pre-existing conditions, even as his administration argues in court against Obamacare. This prompted Stephanopoulos to jump into fact check the president in real-time.

"You've been trying to strike down pre-existing conditions," Stephanopoulos said. "You're striking down the whole law."

Despite the pushback, Trump continues to claim he has a health care plan, despite the difficulty of getting legislation through the Democratic-controlled House, which has tried to safeguard the Affordable Care Act. Health care is a top issue for voters in the 2020 election.

“I have it all ready, and it’s a much better plan for you, and it’s a much better plan," Trump said, without giving more details.

Trump also pushed back at a voter who asked if he would be "more presidential" in his second term if he is re-elected.

“I'm fighting a battle. It's a big battlefield, and I have a lot of forces against me," Trump said. "Sometimes you don’t have time to be totally, as you would say, presidential. You have to get things done."

Acer Predator Triton 300 detailed review

Acer, it appears, is finally catching up to the competition in terms of web presence and product portfolio strength. In December, the popular Taiwan-based PC manufacturer launched its ConceptD series of laptops for creators, namely the ConceptD 7 Pro, ConceptD 7, and ConceptD 5. Started last year, ConceptD is an Acer sub-brand that focusses on products specifically created for professional artists and designers. The latest ConceptD 7 Ezel Convertible series, which the company showcased at CES 2020, sports an Intel 10th Gen Core series chip with Nvidia Quadro RTX graphics. You can read more about that here.

Come to think of it, December 2019 was an extremely important month for Acer in India. Not only did it mark the launch of the ConceptD series in the country but it also marked the launch of the Acer online store, which finally gives customers the option to buy products directly from an official Acer portal without having to choose between models listed on the likes of Flipkart and Amazon. The new online store, which is located at store.acer.com, is currently populated with deals on popular laptops such as the Nitro 5 and Aspire 3. Interestingly and maybe even worryingly, there’s no sign of the Predator Triton 300 on it. Nonetheless, let’s take a closer look at Acer’s newest gaming laptop.

Performance

Though not available on the Acer online store, the Triton 300 is listed on Flipkart for Rs 79,990. For that money, you get the laptop with an Intel 9th Gen Core i7 CPU with 8GB of RAM. Storage is handled by a 256GB solid-state drive working alongside a 1TB hard drive. Complementing the CPU is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card with 4GB of dedicated video RAM. Now the GTX 1650 is, as we all know, the base model in Nvidia’s 2019 line-up of laptop GPUs. Our review unit, on the other hand, came equipped with the same Intel 9th Gen Core i7 and GTX 1650 chips but a more generous 16GB of RAM. Storage was taken care of by a WD 512GB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive with no hard drive to accompany it. This variant of the Triton 300 is expected to make it to online stores like Flipkart soon.

Opening up the base panel revealed a fairly tidy arrangement of components with enough room for expansion. The CFL Auris motherboard on the review unit had a total of two DDR4 SDRAM slots, one of which was eaten up by the Kingston 16GB chip. The motherboard also had two M.2 slots for storage, one of which was occupied by the Western Digital SN720 512GB chip. While the motherboard had space for a 2.5-inch hard drive, there was no caddy fitted on our review unit. This meant that if we wanted to expand storage, we’d have been forced to get another M.2 solid-state drive. To the right of the M.2 slots was a Killer 1650X Wi-Fi 6 card.

Our review unit with a 512GB M.2 SSD lacked a hard drive caddy

The empty RAM slot is a good idea

You can throw in up to two M.2 SSDs and a 2.5-inch hard drive

The review unit performed quite well on our synthetic benchmark tests. On PCMark 8’s Conventional Creative test the Triton 300 scored 4001 points, which is well ahead of what was scored by the FX505DY and FX705DT from Asus’ 2019 AMD Ryzen-powered TUF Gaming line-up. On 3DMark’s Fire Strike and Sky Diver the Triton 300 picked up 8163 and 24350 points, respectively. Again, both scores are well above those picked up by the FX505DY and FX705DT. For reference, you can find our review of the 15-inch FX505DY here and the 17-inch FX705DT here.

Everyday performance of the Triton 300 was more than up to the mark. I was able to run multiple instances of common applications such as Word, Excel, Chrome, File Explorer, and WhatsApp for PC across multiple virtual desktops with noticeable ease. Even with background game downloads happening on Steam or Origin, I didn’t notice any distinguishable drop in performance. On one occasion, I was able to export 100 image files on Adobe Lightroom Classic CC in about 5 minutes. In summary, the Triton 300 offers great performance for everyday tasks, including heavy browsing, heavy file transfers, and online photo editing.

Gaming

Gaming on the Triton 300 was a pleasurable experience. The review unit clocked far better frame rates than the FX505DY or FX705DT. I ran a bunch of games on the laptop in its native screen resolution of Full HD first on Medium graphics settings and then on High (i.e., one notch above Medium) to compare frame rates. V-Sync was turned off across all titles. Doom ran more than comfortably on Medium at an average frame rate of 103 frames per second but slipped to 95 on High. Battlefield V managed 68 frames per second on Medium before falling to 57 on High. Apex Legends clocked an average of 93 frames per second on Medium and 85 frames per second on High.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s internal benchmarking utility reported an average frame rate of 55 frames per second on Medium settings and a negligibly lower 51 frames per second on High settings. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice—which is probably the most graphically taxing game on our list—managed 69 frames per second on Medium but fell to 54 frames per second on High. Finally, Crysis 3 ran at an average frame rate of 96 frames per second on Medium before falling to 73 on High. All these games ran on the Triton 300 with consistent smoothness. As V-Sync was disabled, these games—especially Battlefield V—displayed a fair bit of screen tearing.

At room temperatures of around 14 degrees C, the Triton 300 was well behaved. With heavy CPU and GPU activity happening on the inside, the WASD keys registered about 36.2 degrees C on average and the heat vents on the sides saw about 42 degrees C on average. With both fans spinning at max speed, the Triton 300 was noticeably noisy in the office but it wasn’t as noisy as the slimmer Asus Zephyrus G GA502.

The Triton 300 is a cool cat for the most part

Gaming, on the whole, is a very enjoyable experience on the Triton 300. On one occasion, I played Metro Exodus in Ultra (the highest possible graphics settings, not counting Extreme) and saw very playable frame rates (between 40 and 60 frames per second). All that said, I don’t see why Acer hasn’t lined its Triton 300 stable up with other GPU options apart from the entry-level GTX 1650. An RTX 2060-powered Triton 300 would’ve been a good match against the Lenovo Legion Y540. You can read our review of that laptop here.

Pressing Turbo pushes both fans to about 6,000rpm

Battery

The Triton 300 comes with a quad-cell 58.75Wh non-removable lithium-ion battery, which is frankly not too dependable if you travel a lot. On our standard battery benchmark test, the review unit managed a middling 2 hours, 22 minutes. The FX505DY and FX705DT, by contrast, managed 3 hours, 30 minutes and 4 hours, 45 minutes, on the same test with the exact same parameters, respectively. Sadly, the review unit performed no better on our everyday test runs. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, the laptop lost battery charge from 100 to 19 per cent in 2 hours, 32 minutes. During this time, the laptop was tasked with intense browsing and background music playback. When I brought the screen brightness down from 75 per cent to 55, things improved quite a bit. In summary, don’t expect over four hours of continuous battery life from the Triton 300.

Display, Audio, and IO

The Triton 300 comes with a 15.6-inch ‘ComfyView’ LED-backlit IPS LCD panel with Full HD resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. Colours on the panel appear a bit washed out (especially when the screen brightness is pushed to max) but not to a point where it becomes noticeable while consuming content. On the bright side (sorry for the pun), the screen brightness is sufficient for most indoor and outdoor spots. In addition, the matte finish on top of the display ensures overhead lights (in conference rooms, etc.) don’t become a bother while working. It’s a fine panel for work and play alike.

Colours are a bit washed out but that doesn't get in the way of gaming

The Triton 300 sports two down-firing speakers on its base panel. The sound from them is rather tinny for long sessions of music playback but they should get the job done if you're watching a quick video clip on YouTube. While there's noticeable stereo separation in them, they lack volume. So, if you're trying to show your friends a new game trailer in say, an empty classroom, you might need an external Bluetooth speaker. For serious gaming, you should definitely get yourself a good pair of headphones.

Speakers are tinny and lack volume

The Triton 300’s audio setup is powered by Waves MaxxAudio, which means there’s a bundled app of the same name to control the equaliser and surround sound settings. The in-app sound settings include ‘Revive’ and ‘Reduce Noise’, which work pretty well. In addition, there’s a sound technology that works only when the headphones are plugged in. Called Waves Nx, the technology uses the laptop’s webcam to track the movements of your head so it can make the sound “follow” you virtually, thus giving you the feeling there are fixed speakers on the laptop. I must say that this feature works quite well even if it requires the webcam to be running at all times.

Waves Nx tech uses webcam to create the effect of a virtual room

The Triton 300 comes with plenty of ports to get you hooked up to accessories easily. On the left side of its body, we see a LAN port (with a spring-loaded flap), a Mini DisplayPort, a full-size HDMI port, USB-C 3.1, and a couple of USB-A 3.1 ports (one of which can juice up smartphones even during sleep). Oh, and there's a Kensington Lock Slot for added security. On the right side, we see a proprietary round-pin power port, a USB-A 2.0 port, and a single 3.5mm audio jack for headsets. The inclusion of an SD Card slot would’ve made life easier for users who frequently edit photos and videos.

Ports on the left

Ports on the right

Acer has equipped the Triton 300 with a Killer E2500 Ethernet Controller and a Killer AX1650 Wi-Fi 6 module, both of which take advantage of Killer's DoubleShot Pro technology to let the user switch between Ethernet and Wi-Fi for specific online tasks. For example, the user could reserve the faster Ethernet line for video streaming and use the slower Wi-Fi connection for game downloads. The laptop sports a webcam on top of the display but lacks a fingerprint scanner for faster log-ins.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Triton 300's keyboard is a mixed bag in that it has a few good qualities and a few bad. Going for it are the large, clearly marked keys with multiple brightness settings. There's a numpad on the right side with dedicated Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys. There’s also a dedicated shortcut button to bring up the bundled PredatorSense app. Now, this app lets the user set a custom speed for both fans individually, control GPU overclocking, and manage the lighting profiles on the keyboard's four-zone RGB lighting. Essential keys, like the WASD and arrow keys, allow more light to pass through for easier recognition while gaming.

The four-zone RGB-backlit keyboard has mostly good qualities

Letting the keyboard down are the hardness of the keys and the badly programmed dedicated Turbo button. Let me explain: the keys have ample travel but are a little resistant to keypresses. Acer could have made the setup a tad softer, in my opinion. The Turbo button, on the other hand, is a different sort of problem. Pressing it once makes the two internal fans spool up to max speed but pressing it a second time does absolutely nothing. In other words, it can only enable the Turbo fan profile but not disable it. Despite these flaws, it's a pretty good keyboard for work and play alike. What’s more, it looks fantastic when the ambient light is dimmed.

Turbo button enables max fan speed but can't disable

The Triton 300 comes with a large precision touchpad that works brilliantly for pointing, tapping, scrolling, and dragging with multiple fingers. Because Windows 10 recognises it as a precision unit, there's no need to install a third-party driver or utility to make the most of the touchpad's gesture control. Unlike the unit on Asus' TUF Gaming models, this one does not show any signs of unnecessary play when a finger lands on the surface. The two click keys under the touchpad surface, too, are easy to press. All in all, it's a fine input device for when you decide to leave your usual gaming mouse behind.

Precision touchpad is easy to use

Build and Design

The Triton 300 comes clad in an all-metal cover with a tasteful blue-black finish that sets the laptop apart in its own quiet, calm way. The laptop's overall design is subtle but not as subtle as the Lenovo Legion Y540's. The brightly backlit Predator logo on the top cover and the aggressive cuts on the rear heat vents are a dead giveaway that it's a machine built for gaming. The clipped corners of the top cover and base panel, too, add to the laptop's identity. While the laptop offers a fair amount of grip, it does not go easy on the user's arm muscles. Weighing in at 2.5 kilogrammes, the Triton 300 is quite a heavy brick to carry around.

Neat blue paint job on the vents inside

Opening the lid of the Triton 300 is a one-hand operation but it easily demonstrates just how bendy the slim panel is. A similar amount of flex is seen on the keyboard as well when the keys are tapped hard. The 15.6-inch screen with a matte finish is surrounded by fairly thick bezels all around. The top bezel is home to the webcam and a dual-array microphone. The keyboard island, which lacks a fingerprint sensor, manages to look elegant thanks to the four-zone RGB lighting on the keyboard and the neat chrome finish around the touchpad. Despite the noticeable flex on some of its panels, the Triton 300 manages to come up as one of the better built mid-range gaming machines.

Bottom Line

The Acer Predator Triton 300 is easily one of the best GTX 1650-powered gaming laptops we have seen since last year, especially in terms of CPU and GPU performance, but it’s not without its faults. Its screen could use a bit more colour, its speakers, a lot more volume, and its 2.5-kilogramme build, some slimming down. Luckily, all those flaws can be overlooked if all you care about is consistent performance from its well-stacked internals. The GTX 1650 graphics card inside matches well with the Intel 9th Gen Core i7 CPU to offer a pleasurable gaming experience on most popular AAA titles as long as you’re not adamant about pushing that slider to Ultra in video settings, leave alone VR.

The variant currently available in India has 8GB RAM. Storage comes from a 256GB SSD + 1TB hard drive

In terms of numbers alone, the Acer Predator Triton 300 pushes past the two Asus TUF Gaming models we saw last year—the FX505DY and FX705DT. So, why then, do I feel a bit unsure about recommending the Acer over the two Asus models? It has something to do with the fact that this review unit is different in configuration from the variants that sell in the market. The Triton 300 listed on Flipkart and the nearest Acer Mall (as of writing this review) has half the RAM available on the review unit and dual-disk storage, so I’m not sure how well it will hold up against the TUF Gaming series, or even a GTX 1650-powered Legion Lenovo Y540. If you’re particular about getting the Acer Predator Triton 300 with the exact same specs as our review unit, then you'll have to wait till it pops up in the market. It's expected to go on sale sometime soon. Acer, unfortunately, has not shared the exact price of this unit.

Uttarakhand Hospital Issues Fake Covid-Free Certificates, Probe Ordered

The probe will seek to find out for how long the racket was going on at the hospital.

Rishikesh:

A government hospital in Uttarakhand allegedly issued OPD slips to people certifying that they have no symptoms of COVID-19, without conducting an RT-PCR test, prompting the administration to launch an inquiry into the matter.

Mostly such fake certificates were issued in violation of ICMR guidelines to migrant workers who wanted to go to other districts in search of work.

The matter came to light on Wednesday at SPS Government Hospital, Rishikesh where a doctor was doing this for money, officials at the hospital said requesting anonymity.

They also produced a sample of one such OPD slip issued by the doctor bearing his signature and the stamp of the hospital as a proof.

When contacted Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash on Wednesday said a detailed enquiry is being ordered into the matter.

The probe will seek to find out for how long the racket was going on at the hospital and how many doctors were involved in it, he said.

Chief Medical Superintendent NS Tomar said as per the guidelines of the Centre and the Indian Council of Medical Research an RT-PCR test alone can certify whether or not a person is suffering from COVID-19.

No other document has any legal validity in this matter, he said.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is definitely the best looking smartphone in the market today. It's fast and has a good camera too, but those are only incremental updates over its predecessor. Buy it if you want a phone that you can show off.

Samsung Galaxy S8 detailed review

Samsung really wants its flagship phone to stand out. Given the industry’s constraints, it can’t do that with internal hardware, but what it can do is innovate on design. To its credit, Samsung has been at it for three years now and it this is the closest it has come to perfection. You know what they say though? Perfection doesn’t exist. So, despite the Samsung Galaxy S8’s impressive design, there are gaping holes too.

SEO and trends dictate that we review the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ separately, but frankly speaking, they’re the same smartphones. The differences are minor, so for this review, I’ll simply point out the stuff that differs. You can read the rest in the Galaxy S8+ review.

Build and Design

Smaller, lighter, but just as curved and slippery as the Galaxy S8+. That’s the best way to describe the Galaxy S8. We had the midnight black variant of this one too, and yes, it does have a certain affinity to fingerprints. To be absolutely frank, I personally don’t mind this, because it still feels excellent to hold and as premium as it gets.

That said, I can’t get over the fact that there’s a lot to break on this phone. Gorilla Glass 5 is tough, but it’s still glass that can be broken. Considering you have glass on both sides, using a case is warranted. That, though means you’ll lose the excellent design language and ergonomics.

Speaking of ergonomics, I recommend you risk it and take advantage of them. The Galaxy S8’s back is slippery, but it’s tall and narrow body provides excellent grip. Not once did I feel like the phone would slip out of my hands, even when I woke up all sleepy eyed in the morning and turned off my alarms.

The buttons

I said in the Galaxy S8+ review that button placement was awkward on that phone, and it’s exactly the opposite here. Depending on which hand you’re holding it in, the power on/off button falls right below your thumb/index finger. The volume rocker and Bixby button are also easy to reach without shifting your grip.

The on-screen home, back and recents button work as they should and the phone is narrower than the Galaxy S8, meaning your finger reaches across the screen without a hassle. Apps like Asphalt 8 will use the full 18.5:9 aspect ratio, so you’ll be using the pressure sensitive home button more often. To explain: the Galaxy S8 has a pressure sensitive home button right below the on-screen version appears. You can press down here at any time to return home.

The fingerprint scanner and other biometrics

You’ll find the fingerprint sensor on the back, next to the camera. It’s a new but awkward place to put it on and I do wish Samsung had at least used an indented or raised design here, but this still works on the Galaxy S8, due to its smaller size. It took about a day to get used to, but it’s fast once you’re done.

The Iris Scanner and Face Unlock features also worked on the Galaxy S8. Although, like the bigger phone, they aren’t really dependable here either. You can’t keep both of these features turned on at the same time, and I do recommend using the Iris Scanner over the face unlock. It’s a better solution for low light conditions and faster. Once again though, neither of these are as dependable or seamless as the fingerprint scanner.

I could go on about the design of this smartphone, but everything else you need to know will be found in the Galaxy S8+ review linked above.

Display

It’s hard to believe that this is a 5.8 inch display panel. Univisium aspect ratio makes it taller, but watching content on the Galaxy S8 is much simpler than its elder brother. You still get pillarboxing effects, but only on the two sides and none on the Edge panels. Colour reproduction, saturation and touch sensitivity and feel remain just as good, underscored by excellent black levels and contrast ratio. It achieves nearly luminance readings of nearly 800 Lux, making it one of the brightest displays out there.

Battery

You make a slight compromise with the battery on this device and frankly speaking, a 3000 mAh battery is small by today’s standards. In the Galaxy S8’s case, size does matter and the battery lasts about two-three hours less than the bigger variant. On the PC Mark test, the Galaxy S8 lasted 8 hours 57 minutes on the PC Mark Work 2.0 Battery test.

On regular usage, the phone gets you by about 10 hours during the day. I got the same with some camera usage, about 10 phones calls and just over an hour of gaming. Brightness was set on auto throughout the day, and I spent about two hours in the sun, pushing screen brightness to above medium levels.

It’s the industry standard when it comes to flagships today, but really, it’s about time companies focus on this aspect too. Samsung’s competitors, including Apple, may not be doing much either but for a company looking to have its phone stand out, a bigger battery would have been a better idea.

Performance, Camera, Audio Quality and UI

All of these are mostly the same on the Galaxy S8 and S8+. So, you can simply head over to that review to learn about them.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is noticeably smaller than the S8+, but its screen size differs by only 0.2 inches. Hence, graphics performance and other performance elements are the same too. As always, Samsung also chose the Exynos 8895 SoC for this one instead of the Snapdragon 835.

AnTuTu Benchmark

Geekbench 4 Single Core

Geekbench 4 Multi Core

GFXBench Car Chase

Bottomline

If I had to pick between the two Samsung flagships this year, I would definitely go with the Galaxy S8. That’s because I’m a stickler for compact devices. However, its 5.8 inch display allows enough screen real estate for big phones lovers too. The Galaxy S8, like its cousin, is an incremental update in terms of performance and camera. However, unless Apple, LG, HTC or anyone else can come up with a better design, this is the best looking smartphone this year.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a phone you can show off, but I do have to warn you too. Just like last year, the Galaxy S8 is also prone to slowing down because it runs on Android.

William Gates Sr., the father of Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, is dead.

The death of the 94-year-old was announced by his son Bill in a statement released via his Instagram account on Tuesday.

He said “My father’s death is a huge loss for our family and to many people whose lives he touched.

“Dad lived a long and meaningful life.

“I never stopped learning from his wisdom, kindness, and humility.

“Melinda and I owe him a special debt because his commitment to serving the community and the world helped inspire our own philanthropy.

“Although he would be the last person to say it, my father’s compassion and generosity will live on in the foundation he helped build.

“As I would always say, my dad was the real Bill Gates.

“He was and will continue to be all the things I strive to be.”

Before his death, Gates was a prominent Seattle attorney.

Twitter Removes BJP Politician T Raja Singh’s 3-Year-Old Tweet Citing Hateful Conduct Policy

Twitter reportedly took action after it was questioned for the three-year-old tweet

Highlights
  • Twitter has flagged the tweet saying it violated its rules
  • T Raja Singh was recently banned by Facebook for hate speech
  • Twitter has not taken any action up until now

Twitter has removed a tweet by BJP politician T Raja Singh that was posted in September 2017. In the tweet carrying a video, the BJP Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Telangana urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and citizens of the country to deport Rohingya Muslim immigrants. The 42-year-old politician also used a hashtag #DeportRohingyaMuslims. He posted a similar message on Facebook that eventually pushed the social media giant to ban him permanently from the platform.

The tweet posted on September 12, 2017 by Singh is no longer available for access and is shown with a message saying it violated the Twitter rules. TechCrunch reports that the social network took the action after it was questioned about the three-year-old tweet.

“Twitter has zero-tolerance policies in place to address threats of violence, abuse and harassment, and hateful conduct. If we identify accounts that violate these rules, we'll take enforcement action. Upon investigation, the referenced Tweet was actioned for violating our policies,” a Twitter spokesperson told Gadgets 360.

Twitter added that under its Hateful Conduct Policy, it does not tolerate the abuse or harassment of people on the basis of religion, age, caste, disability or disease and take down content that is in violation of our Twitter Rules including dehumanising language. It recorded a 47 percent increase in the number of accounts actioned, as compared to the last reporting period, Twitter noted in its latest transparency report.

Singh was seen in the tweet encouraging his followers to share the message so that every “Hindu and [other] Indians” would see it. This was, however, not the first time when the politician made a questionable comment on social media. For a similar post, Facebook earlier this month had decided to ban him from its platform and Instagram.

“We have banned Raja Singh from Facebook for violating our policy prohibiting those that promote or engage in violence and hate from having a presence on our platform,” a Facebook spokesperson had said, while announcing the move against the controversial BJP leader.

However, Singh claimed on Twitter that he had not been using Facebook since April 2019 and thus the banning didn't make any difference.

Australia Pushes Trade With India As Row With China Exposes Dependence

Australia Pushes Trade With India As Row With China Exposes Dependence

Australia's services exports have been experiencing a quiet tectonic shift over the past 18 months.

Australia's escalating tensions with Beijing have shown up its reliance on China trade and propelled a push to increase links with Asia's other giant economy, India.

New enrollments of international students from India expanded 32% in 2019 from a year earlier and it's the fastest growing major market for Australian services. India has overtaken China as the largest source of net migration to Australia, and its diaspora is the third largest Down Under, just behind China and the U.K.

bqcs33tg

India's swelling population -- set to overtake China's in 2027 -- suggests ongoing opportunities for Australia to diversify a trade portfolio that currently makes it the developed world's most China-dependent economy. The need to switch things up has accelerated as ties sank to their lowest ebb in 30 years after Canberra's calls for an international inquiry into Covid-19's origins was taken by Beijing as a political attack, with China imposing barriers on barley, beef and wine from Down Under.

This has Australia looking to its democratic, cricket-loving ally to fill the void. Prime Minister Scott Morrison held a virtual summit with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in June and the two signed a defense agreement and upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The trade ministers of Japan, India and Australia recently agreed to work toward achieving supply chain resilience in the Indo-Pacific region.

"We can sell India education, health care, and there's potential in science and technology," said Ian Hall, a professor of international relations at Griffith University in Queensland. "It's much more the consumer market of India's growing middle class than goods."

Yet trade with India has its own challenges. Its government is wedded to economic nationalism, as showcased last year when it pulled out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership designed to free up trade.

Delhi wants to send lots of people to Australia on work visas and doesn't want to reduce tariffs, according to former Australian Trade Minister Craig Emerson, who initiated the Australia-India free trade negotiations in 2011, resulting in a two-way trade around just one tenth of China-Australia shipments.

6i16h9q

"India is highly concerned about its trade deficit," said Lai-Ha Chan, a political scientist at the University of Technology in Sydney, who notes that after signing free trade agreements with South Korea and Japan, India's trade deficit with those nations ballooned. "It would be very worried about Australian farm products, like dairy, harming Indian farmers."

Australia's most valuable export -- iron ore -- hasn't been caught in China's cross hairs yet, perhaps due to a lack of alternative suppliers. Yet Beijing appears to be giving itself greater flexibility, with Emerson noting that China is buying ore carriers that improve the economics of long-distance shipping from Brazil and purchasing Guinea mines.

"It's entirely possible China, once it gets all three mineral provinces in a row -- Guinea, Brazil and Australia -- will play one off against the other to get a better price," he said. "If you're China, you'd say 'where's our vulnerability? Iron ore. So let's diversify, let's fix that.' They may never need to activate it, but it's there, it's available."

What Bloomberg's Economists Say

Australia's services exports have been experiencing a quiet tectonic shift over the past 18 months. In education, growth in Indian enrollments has seen the number of Indian student visa holders eclipse Chinese students. While China's dominance of Australia's goods exports reflects commodities demand, in the employment-intensive services sector China's importance has been challenged by a doubling of services exports to India over the past two years.

Fans in stadiums pilots to continue in EFL amid Covid-19 pandemic - BBC Sport

Fans in stadiums pilots to continue in EFL amid Covid-19 pandemic

By Dan Roan & Laura ScottBBC Sport
Sheffield United play against Wolves
Premier League games continue to be played behind closed doors

The English Football League will continue to stage pilots with up to 1,000 fans at matches this weekend, following approval from the government.

Championship, League One and League Two clubs were asked to put in requests by Tuesday in order for their plans to be signed off in time.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden will meet sports bodies on Wednesday.

However, a decision is unlikely to be reached this week on the planned return of spectators to sport from 1 October.

The English Football League (EFL) said the pilots were an "important step" for fans' safe return.

Those in local lockdown areas were told they would not receive permission to take part in the test events.

In a letter to clubs on Tuesday, the EFL's head of policy John Nagle said: "We cannot guarantee at this stage that all clubs that would like to stage a pilot will be given permission to do so, as only a limited number will be approved.

"We are still in discussions with regard to pilot matches on other dates."

Nagle said that "the next 48 hours are likely to be critical in terms of determining the direction of travel" regarding the potential return of supporters.

He asked clubs to lobby local MPs, urging them to "make representations on behalf of you, their local club, to government" and added that football was facing "an impending financial crisis as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic".

Nagle also said key messages clubs should highlight to MPs were that: "Football now wishes to see the government give the green light to the return of crowds from the beginning of October as originally planned, as will be the case in many other European countries including Belgium, Germany, France, Denmark, Austria, Poland and Switzerland.

"Failure to do so, or to at least provide any credible roadmap back to the return of fans in the near future, could have catastrophic consequences for many football clubs and the communities they represent."

He apologised for the "late notice and short timescales" but said: "We are very much in the government's hands on this one."

An EFL spokesman said it remained "in discussions with the government about the pilot programme which may include a limited number of further pilot matches during September with capacity limited to 1,000".

"The League is clear in its view that social distancing can be applied safely in football stadia and that having crowds at matches is an absolutely essential part of helping to protect club finances, which remain under extreme pressure," they added.

"Therefore, the successful delivery of further pilots will be an important step towards getting larger numbers of fans into grounds safely."

Last week, the government restricted pilot events to 1,000 spectators after a rise in coronavirus cases, and said plans for grounds to be up to a third full from 1 October would be reviewed.

The Premier League has already written to the government over pilot plans and says around £100m per month will be lost by clubs across the leagues while matches continue behind closed doors.

It is one of a number of sports bodies to have voiced concerns at the financial impact of an extended period with empty venues.

Nigel Huddleston, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Heritage, has written to former sports minister Tracey Crouch MPexternal-link to state that despite changes to Covid-19 restrictions, the UK government is hopeful fans can attend events under socially distanced conditions from 1 October.

National League chairman Brian Barwick has warned that clubs risk suffering "severe economic hardship" and players will go unpaid unless the government allows fans into its stadiums next month.

Barwick has written to Dowden to express his concern.

"Unlike the upper echelons of English professional football, the National League restart depends upon crowds being allowed back in stadiums as live attendance is by far the largest source of income," he said.

"If a decision is made to delay or to cancel the return of fans, it is feared many players and staff may go unpaid due to the shortfall in match day income and the furlough scheme being discontinued.

"Furthermore, in the absence of a credible pathway for the return of spectators, it is feared that clubs could suffer severe economic hardship, and that community assets may fall out of use."

'We wouldn't last the season'

On Monday, the second pilot fixture in rugby union's Premiership took place as 1,000 spectators attended Gloucester's match with Harlequins.

Meanwhile, a report in the Times on Tuesday claimsexternal-link attendances could be restricted to between 1,000 and 2,500 from 1 October, depending on the coronavirus infection rate.

Gloucester chief executive Lance Bradley told BBC Radio 4 that level of restriction would be "a disaster" if put in place for the remainder of the season.

"We simply have to get fans back in reasonable numbers as soon as possible to ensure the game survives," said Bradley. "We can't keep going losing money with 1,000 or 2,000 fans.

"In the end, that would be a disaster. There are clubs in a worse position than us but we would find it very difficult.

"We wouldn't be able to make it through the season if we were only allowed crowds of 2,500."

'The consequences could be very serious for Silverstone'

Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle said the track needs to get a full crowd back for next summer's British Grand Prix as a reduced capacity is not sustainable for its business.

"If we had no fans here next year - and in fact if we are required to run with a reduced number of fans here next year - the consequences could be very, very serious for Silverstone," he told BBC Sport.

"We have had a truly dreadful 2020. We are burning through cash at an alarming rate. You cannot run a 550 acre site with no revenue coming in or very, very reduced revenue.

"If we are not hitting a level that is very, very far above 50%, then we are not even breaking even. I don't want to run with a reduced audience next year because it will simply make us lose more money, quicker - and we cannot sustain that.

"If we are not there, Silverstone will be in a dire place."

Micromax Canvas 6 detailed review

Micromax has come a long way. From being a quintessential budget smartphone maker, to a company that truly takes on global brands. Micromax, though, has run into a lot of roadblocks recently, especially from Chinese manufacturers. The company went for a complete brand revamp, led by the Micromax Canvas 6, the company’s first metallic smartphone. Did it get back in competition? Here’s what I found over a week of using this phone.

Build and Design
The Micromax Canvas 6 shared similar ergonomics as the OnePlus One, although it’s made of metal rather than Sandstone. Further, unlike most other phones (especially from Micromax) in the sub-15k price bracket, the Canvas 6 has a much bolder design. The edges are not curved or rounded, there is a nice chamfer along the edges and the rear camera sits in a glass encasing at the back. There are no rough edges, even the two physical buttons and sandblasted back of the phones, feel quite premium.

It feels like a mid-ranged flagship. However, in one week of usage, I felt that the physical buttons are a little tough to presses. Also, the power key didn’t respond to presses for days at a time. During this time, the fingerprint scanner was the only way to unlock the phone. The power button started to respond after three days.

Display and UI
While the Canvas 6 has a good display, it is not without its shortcomings. It has good colour reproduction, but is slightly warm. The viewing angles are also good, but the display is quite reflective, causing issues under sunlight. Sunlight visibility in general isn’t great either, and there’s no Gorilla Glass protection here.

As for UI, there aren't any major changes from what we have usually seen from Micromax. The only exception is the Around service, which is now being integrated in Micromax devices as well. With this, you can order food, buy products, call cabs, books flights and more. It is available from the extreme-left panel of the home screen, placed where multiple other companies put curated content and news feeds. It has an easy, intuitive interface, and is easy to navigate. Overall, it is a nice addition to have. The rest of the UI is quite familiar, and offer only subtle changes over the stock Android interface. Familiarity with interface is a good thing to have, and Micromax scores well here.

Before we move further, there is one mentionable feature: Turbo Download. According to Micromax, this feature provides better download speeds for larger files by combining both WLAN and 3G/4G data. However, in my tests with the feature ON, the device either downloaded on WLAN or on mobile data, and never on both. It is theoretically a good feature, and maybe this was an isolated issue, but this calls for wider tests to be undertaken.

Performance
The MediaTek Helio X10-powered Micromax Canvas 6 may not be the fastest phone around, but is definitely the most powerful smartphone that Micromax has made till date. This previous generation SoC, combined with 3GB of RAM, manages to provide decent performance for everyday usage. The last time we saw the Helio X10 on a budget smartphone, it was the LeEco Le 1s and it came out to be a very good performer, thanks to good optimisation by the Chinese OEM. However, compared to the Le 1s, the Canvas 6 is unable to offer that level of performance. To be quite precise, the Micromax Canvas 6 is only 70 percent as powerful as the LeEco Le 1s, and definitely miles behind the likes of LeEco Le 2 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, our presently reigning budget smartphones. It works if you are not a power user, and your work day includes apps like messages, Facebook, YouTube or music streaming apps like Gaana. Less demanding games such as Alto’s Adventure and Mekorama also worked quite smoothly, without any major lags. However, heavy games such as Asphalt 8 lagged constantly and consistently, from the moment I started playing.

Heating is another issue with this phone. With 4G enabled, the Canvas 6 remains warm at almost all the time, and becomes uncomfortably hot (crossing 45 degrees centigrades) after only a minute of calling. This may also be a software issue, which can be resolved via an update. If not, this is a major issue.

Battery
As far as our previous encounters with MediaTek Helio X10-powered smartphones fare, it hasn't been very battery-friendly. Previous smartphones offering a similar hardware setup like the LeEco Le 1s offered about 7 hours of battery life. The Micromax Canvas 6 is no better and offers similar battery life, especially with a 4G-enabled SIM. Processor-intensive tasks such as gaming or video streaming burn through the battery at a higher rate. An average day with about half an hour of gaming, half a dozen calls, streaming videos on YouTube and music for more than two hours lead to charging the device about twice each day.

Camera
The Micromax Canvas 6 has a 13MP rear camera. Photographs taken by the rear camera, even in amply lit environment, offer average detail. However, the focussing is really slow, and the camera is often unable to lock focus properly. Colour accuracy is off the mark, and photographs have a cool hue that often ruins most photographs. Under low light conditions, there is a lot of noise that renders photographs unimpressive. Overall, the image quality of the Micromax Canvas 6’s camera is average. The front-facing camera is rather poor, as photographs come out blurry and overexposed at times.

View post on imgur.com

The camera app on the Canvas 6 is nothing different, and like the UI, looks and behaves exactly the same as we have seen on previous Micromax smartphones. The shutter response is acceptable, and the UI is functional. They are not blazing fast, but neither do they stutter.

Bottomline
The Micromax Canvas 6 might be the flagship smartphone that Micromax is putting its hopes on, but in reality, it is barely average. The build quality is underwhelming, and although the design is decent and the UI remains intuitive, they are not enough to redeem the sub-par camera, battery life and performance, three key aspects that rule smartphones. In the sub-15k category, you can have far better options such as the LeEco Le 2 or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

Blackberry DTEK50 detailed review

Once upon a time, when the iPhone wasn’t a reality, there was BlackBerry. BlackBerry phones possessed three very important features – an awesome keyboard, good battery life and push mail, combined with BBM, which made it the ultimate communication device. Then the iPhone launched and the rest as they say is history.

We have seen BlackBerry try to launch smartphones like the Priv and the DTEK 60 that try to address one key issue – security. They do pack in the bells and whistles expected from a flagship device, but for some reason the additional security wasn’t enough to sway customers back towards the BlackBerry camp.

Today we have with us the BlackBerry DTEK 50. The smartphone looks a lot like the Alcatel Idol 4 and is priced at Rs. 21,990. However, the sub 25k price point is packed with devices that offer users a bang for their buck. Does the Blackberry DTEK50 have enough to sway customers in its favour?

Build and Design

The Blackberry DTEK 50 is a well built device. It has a textured back and the camera, along with a dual-tone LED flash, that sits snug in a corner. You have the standard BlackBerry Logo on the center of the back. The textured finish ensures a very good grip, and the the form factor is perfect for single handed use.

The front of the Blackberry DTEK 50 has a prominent forehead and chin. The forehead houses a front facing camera and ambient light sensor. Above and below the display, we have the front firing speakers. They aren’t the loudest, but the fact that they are front firing, does help. They also produce a stereo effect. The audio is quite clear from these speakers.

The bottom of the device has a micro-USB port. That's an interesting choice from BlackBerry, given that the world is moving towards an USB-C future. Nonetheless, it's handy for those upgrading from a smartphone with micro-USB connectivity. I’m pretty sure you have a microUSB cable lying in a drawer/car somewhere.

The top houses the headphone jack, while the left of the phone has the power button. This position would have been fine if BlackBerry didn’t have this prominent round button on the right that rests under the volume rocker. This is a “shortcut” button and can be mapped to launch an app you use frequently. It is very confusing and throughout my review process, I kept pressing it to wake the device. It's a problem when you're already used to a power button.

Overall, Blackberry has nailed the design of a functional compact phone. The textured back ensures a good grip and the 5.2-inch form factor makes it easy for single-handed use. The device may be simple looking, but the amount of functionality in this simple build is extremely good. Just like a business suit.

Display and UI

The DTEK 50 has a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display, with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a pixel density of 424 ppi. The display is bright and produces neutral colours. Watch trailers like Spider-Man Homecoming, Kubo and the Two Strings or the Secret Lives of Pets and you will see how vibrant it looks. However, sunlight visibility isn’t the best.

The display has maximum luminance of 595 Lux, which is about the average for this price range. It is however a good display for everyday activities like YouTube videos, typing, social media, etc.

BlackBerry has used a predominantly stock Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with some BlackBerry tweaks.

One tweak that I really love is the keyboard. It's an absolute pleasure to type on and predicts words you may use by simply swiping up on the predicted word.

Coming to other additions, there is a menu that can be launched by swiping from the edge of the display. You have access to shortcuts like calendar, messages, to do and contacts. The slider is just like the edge display on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge – it has very little utility. You will forget about it easily, especially if you are used to having a lot of widgets on the home screens.

The device comes preloaded with BBM and DTEK security.

DTEK security is a good app to have if you are finicky about security, and will show you what apps are accessing the camera, microphone, etc. There are a bunch of third party apps available on Google Play that do the same.

Overall, the display has good colour reproduction but average brightness, and the UI is close to stock, which is good and the keyboard is nice. The security additions will appeal to some and the added slider doesn’t add utility. If the extra button on the right of the device could be used to unlock the device, then it would help but I forgot about that too after the initial novelty wore off.

Performance

As an everyday device, I didn’t face any issues with the performance of the BlackBerry DTEK 50. The phone ran all the apps quite well, including apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Threes, Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc. From opening apps to switching between them, there wasn’t any significant issue. Sure, there were times when you notice a stutter while switching between apps frequently, but it wasn't significant enough to be detrimental.

If there is one thing that really annoys me about the BlackBerry DTEK 50, it’s the mere 16GB built-in storage. Thankfully you can expand the storage via a micro-SD card, but we would have preferred at least 32GB built-in storage. Come on BlackBerry, even Apple has accepted 32GB as base storage now!

The benchmark scores were however not up to mark and that is a problem we have seen with other Snapdragon 617 powered smartphones.

Gaming

I played a lot of Asphalt 8 on the BlackBerry DTEK50. Apart from a little stutter when booting the game for the first time, the experience was smooth. The game ran extremely well on the device and we think credit for that goes to the Adreno 405 GPU. Simpler games like Threes, Pool, etc. are smooth.

Camera

On the back, the BlackBerry DTEK 50 has a 13MP camera. It is average when compared to what the competition has to offer. Colours look oversaturated at times, so reds will look too red and so on. Images also have a lot of noise and the white balance seems off, often. Filters and other forms of post production can help, though. If the camera is of the utmost importance to you then you have the likes of the much cheaper Nubia Z11 Mini, or the similarly priced Zenfone 3 that have better rear cameras than the BlackBerry DTEK 50. If you can increase your budget by a few thousand more, the OnePlus 3 is a much better option as far as the camera is concerned.

Battery life

On the PC Mark Work 2.0 Battery Test, the device lasts for a little over 5 hours, which is sub-par. A heavy user will have to resort to a charger half-way through the day. The BlackBerry DTEK50 supports Quick Charge 2.0 through the microUSB port, but it takes a little over two hours to reach 100%, which again, is a bummer. You lose between 20 to 25% of battery with about an hour of Netflix, watching and a little under 20% while gaming for about 15 minutes.

Bottomline

Overall, I think the Blackberry DTEK 50 is a decent phone, but it has some striking shortcomings that can’t be ignored. It has a great display and decent front facing speakers, but the battery life of the smartphone is disappointing. The UI is smooth; games run well, even though benchmark scores are low. The keyboard is fantastic, but the battery life is bad. Add to that the fact that 16GB storage will make you cringe, and we have a phone that could have been a whole lot more with minor improvements. If the keyboard is important to you and you don’t want to play games or load heavy apps on the phone, then sure, this is the device for you. However as far as multimedia is concerned (camera and gaming to be specific), you're better off looking at one of the many alternatives.

American technology giant is hosting a virtual event on Tuesday where it is expected to announce upgrades to its products and services. Historically, the company’s September keynote event has been about its and Watch series line-ups. This year, however, the company is likely to bring upgrades to two of its vital hardware lines — the Watch Series and iPad — beyond the iPhones. That said, let’s take a look at what should be expected at the Apple event:

Series 6

At the event, the Cupertino, California-based technology company is expected to upgrade its Watch Series line-up, likely to be called the Series 6. The smartwatch could bring improvements with regard to performance and functionality. It might be powered by a faster processor for performance gains and improved user interface (WatchOS). As for features, the Watch is expected to get a sensor to monitor blood oxygen saturation, commonly referred to as SpO2. The Watch is likely to come in two sizes (40 mm and 44 mm) and two connectivity variants (WiFi and WiFi + LTE). Besides the Watch Series 6, the company could also unveil its first affordable Watch, likely to be named the Watch SE.

Air

Apple is also expected to upgrade its midrange tablet, the iPad Air, with seasonal upgrades. The upgraded iPad Air would still remain cheaper than the iPad Pro but bring some of the latter’s more premium features. The iPad Air is expected to feature a bigger screen than the current one. Moreover, Apple might add second-generation Apple Pencil support.

Apple One

On the services side, Apple is expected to debut a single-subscription-based bundle service, which might include the Apple TV+, News+, Arcade and Music. Details of the Apple One service are thin right now, but the product is expected to be similar to the Amazon Prime subscription that gives customers access to all Amazon services at a fixed subscription cost.

Work on a major new nuclear power station in Britain will stop after Japanese company Hitachi pulled out of the project.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 3:45 PM IST

LONDON: Work on a major new nuclear power station in Britain will stop after Japanese company Hitachi pulled out of the project.

Hitachi halted work on the Horizon Project, located in Wylfa, on the Welsh island of Anglesey. It will also end work on another site located in England after it had been unable to agree on financing with the U.K. government.

The company had been in talks with the British government for years about how it might support the project financially, including through stock and debt investments. It suspended operations last year when a deal couldnt be reached, and said the COVID-19 pandemic made financing difficult.

Hitachi made this decision given that 20 months have passed since the suspension, and the investment environment has become increasingly severe due to the impact of COVID-19,” the company said in a statement.

The suspension was seen as a blow to a British government facing Brexit at the end of the year. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government wants to show it is open to business deals with companies and countries beyond the European Union.

Horizon will now take steps for the orderly closing down of all its current development activities, but will keep the lines of communication open with government and other key stakeholders regarding future options at both our sites, Horizon nuclear power said in a statement.

Wylfa Newydd: Hitachi officially confirms withdrawal and reasons for walking away

North Wales Live revealed yesterday that the Japanese firm was due to pull out

Hitachi has officially announced it is withdrawing from Wylfa Newydd.

The Anglesey nuclear plant was tipped to bring hundreds of skilled long term jobs to Anglesey but was placed on hold by the Japanese company in January 2019.

Planning for the site continued with hopes it could be restarted but yesterday North Wales Live revealed Hitachi was preparing to walk away from the site.

Hitachi today confirmed that it will "end business operations on the nuclear power plant construction project in the United Kingdom".

They said: "Hitachi made this decision given that 20 months have passed since the suspension, and the investment environment has become increasingly severe due to the impact of COVID-19.

"The Horizon Project is a proposal by Horizon Nuclear Power Limited, which Hitachi acquired in November 2012, to develop nuclear power stations comprising of two units of UK ABWR (2) at Wylfa Newydd in Anglesey, North-West Wales, with the intention to develop Hitachi's nuclear business in the UK and contribute to the energy policy of the UK government, as well as maintaining the business foundation that supports the nuclear industry in Japan.

"Hitachi decided to suspend the Project in January 2019, from the viewpoint of Hitachi's economic rationality as a private company because it was clear that further time was needed to decide on a financing structure for the project and the conditions for building and operating the nuclear power stations.

"As a result of this decision to end business operations on the Horizon Project, Hitachi will coordinate with the UK government and relevant organizations regarding its cooperation as the owner of ABWR licence (3) and the handling of the planned construction sites and other matters."

They added: "Hitachi expresses its deepest gratitude to the UK government, the Wales government and residents, the Japanese government and other stakeholders for their continued support and cooperation.

"Hitachi will continue to contribute to improve social, environmental and economic value and people's quality of life through its Social Innovation Business, including the energy business."

This comes ahead of the Development Consent Order(DCO) decision which was due to be announced by Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy(BEIS) Alok Sharma by the end of September.

The development of the two-reactor nuclear site had been expected to be a major source of employment on Anglesey and a boost to the region’s economy.

Hitachi's UK nuclear vehicle Horizon Nuclear Power said it will now take steps for the orderly closing down of all its current development activities, but will keep the lines of communication open with Government and other key stakeholders regarding future options at both our sites.

Chief Executive Duncan Hawthorne said: “I understand this announcement will be disappointing for our many supporters who had hoped to see our project through to completion and I would personally like to thank you for your support throughout our time on this project.

“In particular I would like to thank our lead host community of Anglesey in Wales, represented by the Isle of Anglesey County Council and Welsh Government, and the key representatives around Oldbury.

“I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the many international, UK and Welsh stakeholders who have supported us in the development of our projects.

“Nuclear power has a critical role to play in helping tackle our energy needs, meeting our climate change targets and levelling up the economy through green growth and job creation.

“Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey and Oldbury on Severn are highly desirable sites for new nuclear build.  We will do our utmost to facilitate the prospects for development which will bring the major local, national and environmental benefits that nuclear can uniquely deliver as we push to transition to a net zero carbon economy by 2050.”

Virginia Crosbie, MP for Ynys Môn, said: "Over the past few months I have been working hard with key stakeholders locally and nationally to promote and support this project.

"I know that many people on Ynys Môn will feel disillusioned if there is yet another setback in the plans for Wylfa.

"However, I remain committed to my manifesto pledge to bring quality jobs, skilled employment and investment to Ynys Môn.

"I still believe that the Wylfa site offers great opportunities for the UK Government to deliver both its levelling-up agenda and net-zero carbon objectives.

"It is a prime location for a nuclear energy plant and if Hitachi does withdraw then I will continue to work on the island and in Westminster to seek alternative approaches for the site."

Beijing:

China has successfully sent nine satellites into orbit in its first commercial launch of a rocket from a platform at sea, state media reported on Wednesday.

The satellites, one of which belonged to video-sharing platform Bilibili, were deployed by a Long March 11 rocket from the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, media reported.

The Long March 11, designed to be deployed quickly and from mobile launch sites such as a ship, is mainly used to carry small satellites. The rocket made its first sea launch in June last year.

"Sea launch platforms will increase the number of China's launch areas, improve launch efficiency, and make launches safer and more flexible," the official People's Daily cited Li Zongli, director of the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, as saying.

China has three inland space launch centres, where used rocket stages return to earth and sometimes pose a danger to inhabited areas. Sea launches would reduce that risk.

China has made its space programme a top priority in recent years as it races to catch up with the United States and become a major space power by 2030.

McIlroy Shaped By Perspective Of Fatherhood At U.S. Open

First-time fatherhood has suited Rory McIlroy. He has doted on daughter Poppy in the two weeks since she was born, and he felt the pang of having to leave her and wife Erica to prepare for this week's U.S. Open.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 3:30 AM IST

First-time fatherhood has suited Rory McIlroy. He has doted on daughter Poppy in the two weeks since she was born, and he felt the pang of having to leave her and wife Erica to prepare for this week’s U.S. Open.

He’s also embraced the sleepless nights, even diaper duty.

“I’ve got my hands dirty, put it that way,” McIlroy said Tuesday at Winged Foot.

McIlroy is hoping to do the same this week during what figures to be a brutal test.

Still one of golf’s best, the 31-year-old is attempting to end a lengthy at least for him drought at the majors.

Since winning the 2014 PGA Championship for his fourth career major, McIlroy has gone 0 for 20 in golf’s four most important tournaments. He’s come close with 10 top-10 finishes since winning at Valhalla.

In that span, Brooks Koepka has won four majors, Jordan Spieth three. Danny Willett became a first-time major champion at the Masters; Tiger Woods returned from a series of back surgeries to win his 15th major at Augusta last year; and 23-year-old Collin Morikawa won this year’s PGA Championship in his second career major start.

It’s not like McIlroy’s skills have faded.

He was the FedEx Cup champion in 2016 and 2019, has 12 victories over the past six years nine on the PGA Tour and arrived at Winged Foot ranked No. 4 in the world.

The majors have proved elusive, in large part due to slow starts.

McIlroy grinded out an even-par 70 at TPC Harding Park in last month’s PGA Championship before fading to 33rd, but too often he has stumbled out of the gate and spent the rest of the week chasing. One glaring example was the British Open at Royal Portrush in his native Northern Ireland last year, when he hit his opening tee shot out of bounds and made a quadruple-bogey 8.

I probably just put a little too much pressure on myself going into tournaments, he said. And from there, shooting a bad score on the first day and putting yourself under even more pressure from there to just make it to the weekend, and then to try to play catch-up. I think thats been the big thing.

McIlroy followed his second FedEx Cup title in 2019 with seven straight top-10 finishes early in 2020 and moved back to No. 1 in the world for 10 straight weeks. But since the PGA Tour resumed from its stoppage during the coronavirus pandemic, McIlroy has mostly been a nonfactor. In nine events, his only top 10 finish was at the Tour Championship, which has a 30-man field.

The key this week, as it usually is with McIlroy, will be his driver.

At the top of his game, McIlroy is one of the world’s best off the tee, hitting towering shots that sail past his playing partners’ into the middle of fairways. When the driver goes awry, McIlroy finds himself hacking out from difficult positions, often scrambling for pars instead of setting up birdies.

Winged Foot has proven to be one of the toughest courses in major championship history the 1974 U.S. Open was called the Massacre at Winged Foot and the rough this week is thick and juicy.

McIlroy was fourth on tour in driving distance in the recently concluded season, averaging 314 yards, but was 155th in accuracy, hitting 56% of the fairways.

The good news this week is Winged Foot provides some opportunities to run low shots from the rough up to the greens, and McIlroy has enough power to leave driver in the bag on tighter holes.

Every course we go to nowadays, its the way that the modern game has went; the longer you can hit it, the more advantage you have, McIlroy said. Id still take hitting fairways over hitting it 350 in the rough here.

Wherever his tee shots end up or whatever type of start he gets off to, McIlroy may have a better attitude about it.

Fatherhood has way of putting things into perspective.

Ive grown up my whole life dreaming of winning these tournaments and thats not going to change,” he said But if it doesnt quite happen, I can live with that and go home and be very happy and leave whats happened at the golf course at the golf course.

East Bengal have submitted the Invitation to Bid documents to FSDL to participate in the upcoming edition of the Indian Super League.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:17 PM IST

Kolkata football giant East Bengal have submitted the Invitation to Bid (ITD) documents to Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) to participate in the upcoming edition of the Indian Super League (ISL).

East Bengal had recently announced that they had sold a majority stake to city-based Shree Cement Ltd and would appeal to the ISL organisers in a bid to make a dramatic late entry into the country's top-tier club competition.

"We are extremely happy to announce that the consortium of Shree Cement Ltd and East Bengal club have placed the bid to participate in this year's ISL," the club announced on Twitter late on Tuesday.

The red-and-gold brigade's new investors were slated to pick up the bid proposal for a spot in the ISL in the name of 'Shree Cement Foundation', a new company it has registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

(FSDL) had invited bids for the inclusion of an 11th team in this edition of country's top tier club competition which will be held in Goa behind closed doors from November-March amid Covid-19 pandemic.

The ISL, in its seventh edition, will be played behind closed doors at three venues - Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda; GMC Athletic Stadium, Bambolim; and Tilak Maidan Stadium, Vasco. East Bengal's arch rivals Mohun Bagan, after its merger with ATK, will debut in this ISL season.

A top European Union official strongly denounced the stigmatization of LGBT people by authorities in Poland, saying on Wednesday that LGBTfree zones that have been declared in parts of the country have no place in the EU.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:12 PM IST

BRUSSELS: A top European Union official strongly denounced the stigmatization of LGBT people by authorities in Poland, saying on Wednesday that LGBT-free zones that have been declared in parts of the country have no place in the EU.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in her first State of the Union address, said that LGBT-free zones, are humanity-free zones.

“They have no place in our Union, von der Leyen said, adding that the commission would soon put forward a strategy to strengthen LGBT rights in Europe.

She did not mention Poland by name, but did not need to.

About one-third of Poles now live in communities that have passed resolutions declaring their opposition to the promotion of LGBT rights. The resolutions carry no binding legal powers, but they are seen by critics as discriminatory. Most were approved in the conservative eastern and southern areas of Poland.

In one such example, a resolution passed last year by the legislature of Malopolska, the region surrounding the Polish city of Krakow, expressed firm opposition to the emerging public activities aimed at promoting the ideology of LGBT movements.

The resolution said such activities interfere with the social order and were oriented at the annihilation of values shaped by the centuries-old heritage of Christianity.

Similar assertions are often expressed at the highest levels of government in Poland and by the powerful Catholic church.

Jarosaw Kaczyski, the leader of the right-wing Law and Justice party that has governed Poland since 2015, recently called the LGBT rights movement a threat to the very foundations of our civilization.

Polish President Andrzej Duda won reelection in July after a campaign in which he called the LGBT movement an ideology more dangerous than communism.

In her European Parliament address on Wednesday, von der Leyen countered such rhetoric.

I will not rest when it comes to building a union of equality, von der Leyen said. A Union where you can be who you are and love who you want without fear of recrimination or discrimination.

Because being yourself is not your ideology, she said. “Its your identity. And no one can ever take it away.”

Panic triggered by ‘fake news’ on lockdown responsible for migrants’ walk home, Centre tells Parliament

By: |
Updated: Sep 16, 2020 9:31 AM

There was an exodus of a large number of migrant workers to their native places from different parts of the country during the lockdown.

Migrants walk to reach home. (File)

The central government has blamed ‘fake news’ for the large-scale migration crisis during the coronavirus-induced lockdown. It also said that the global experience with Covid-19 and its highly infectious nature was the reason behind the decision to impose a nationwide lockdown on March 24 at a notice of four hours.

The government shared the information in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Trinamool Congress MP Mala Roy had asked why migrant labourers had to walk miles to reach their homes.

In response to the question, MoS Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said, “The migration of large number of migrant workers was triggered by panic created by fake news regarding duration of lockdown, and people, especially migrant labourers, were worried about adequate supply of basic necessities like food, drinking water, health services and shelter.”

He said that the government was aware about this, and took all necessary measures to ensure that no citizen should be deprived of basic amenities of food, drinking water, medical facilities etc.

The second question was asked by Congress MP Manish Tewari. He had asked why the government had to resort to a nationwide lockdown at a notice of just four hours.

“Soon after the outbreak of novel coronavirus on 7th January, 2020, several measures like progressive tightening of international travel, issuing advisories for members of the public, setting up quarantine facilities etc. were taken by the Central Government to contain the spread of COVID-19,” Rai said in a written reply.

Rai said that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as pandemic on March 11. Experts, he said, recommended that effective measures for social distancing should be taken to contain the spread of the virus.

From March 16 to 23, most of the state governments/UTs resorted to a partial or full lockdown based upon their assessment of the situation, he stated.

“Covid-19 is a highly infectious disease. Any mass movement of people would have spread the disease very fast amongst people in all parts of the country. Taking into consideration the above facts, the global experience and the need for consistency in the approach and implementation of various containment measures across the country, a nationwide lockdown was announced on 24th March, 2020 to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country,” he said.

The Modi government had on March 24 announced a nationwide lockdown. There was an exodus of a large number of migrant workers to their native places from different parts of the country during the lockdown. The lockdown restrictions were eased from late May.

Earlier on Monday, Union Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar told the Lok Sabha that the government does not have data on the number of migrants who died or were injured while returning to their native places due to the lockdown.
