Minor among two killed in wall collapse

A carpenter and his assistant, a minor, were killed after a portion of the wall of a Hanuman temple collapsed in Perzadiguda following heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening.

At 6.30 p.m. Praveen Kumar (44) and Mohan (15) were on their way back home in Vishnupuri Colony of Medipally on a bike when the temple wall collapsed and fell on them. Kumar was riding the bike.

“They suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot,” Medipally inspector Anji Reddy said. He said a case under Section 174 Cr.PC (suspicious death) was registered and the bodies were shifted to Osmania General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Woman swept away

A 38-year-old woman was swept away in a swollen water stream near Shapur Tanda of Vikarabad district here on Wednesday evening.

The victim was identified as Anitha, wife of Dasharath, a farm labourer from Shapur Tanda. According to Vikarabad Superintendent of Police M. Narayana, the victim, along with her husband and six children, was returning home after finishing their day’s work in an agriculture field. As the stream was overflowing they waited there for nearly 20 minutes and later tried to cross it with the help of a rope.

“It was raining heavily and while they were crossing the stream, she stumbled on a stone and got swept away in the strong current. Two of her six children, who were crossing the stream by holding her hand, escaped by clinging to a tree, and were rescued by the locals,” he said. Late in the evening, Anitha’s body was fished out and handed over to family members.

The top spokesman for the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services is taking a leave of absence, the agency announced Wednesday, days after he promoted dangerous conspiracy theories during a Facebook Live video.

In the video, first reported by the New York Times, Michael Caputo, who is HHS' assistant secretary for public affairs, charged that scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "don't want America to get well." He also urged Trump supporters to load up on ammunition in preparation for a violent left-wing rebellion when the president wins re-election.

Caputo also said in the video he's been having health issues and that his "mental health has definitely failed."

In the announcement, HHS said Caputo "has decided to take a leave of absence to focus on his health and the well-being of his family. Mr. Caputo will be on leave for the next 60 days."

The White House named the long-time Trump loyalist as assistant secretary of HHS for public affairs in April, following stories that painted HHS Secretary Alex Azar as raising early concerns about the coronavirus.

In the months since, Caputo has been accused of trying to interfere with the CDC's messaging on the virus, but never as spectacularly as he did in the Facebook rant.

In the video, Caputo repeatedly blasted scientists at the CDC, the Times reported, publicly undermining the agency's work during a pandemic that's already claimed over 190,000 American lives.

Some CDC scientists are involved in "sedition," plotting "how they're going to attack Donald Trump," Caputo reportedly said.

“There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president,” Caputo said. They've been pushing "rotten science," he argued.

Azar sidestepped a question about the video on Tuesday during a visit to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

"I'm not going to comment on somebody's personal social media posts. Michael Caputo has been a valued member of our coronavirus response team, but I'm not going to get into that. Those are his personal social media posts and I'm not going to have more to say on that at this moment," Azar said.

The Times reported the Facebook Live broadcast was on Caputo's personal Facebook page, where he had 5,000 "friends." His Facebook page and his Twitter account both appear to have been deleted on Monday.

In the same broadcast, Caputo also appeared to seize on fears of some Democrats that Trump would try to stay in office victory even if rival Joe Biden wins the election - and turned the argument on its head. He suggested Trump would win but Biden would refuse to concede.

“And when Donald Trump refuses to stand down at the inauguration, the shooting will begin,” Caputo said.

He referred to the killing of a Trump supporter in Portland by a self-declared "anti-fascist" as a "drill."

“The drills that you’ve seen are nothing,” Caputo said. “If you carry guns, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s going to be hard to get,” he added.

Caputo also said an unidentified "they" are "going to have to kill me."

In a statement to The Times on Monday, HHS praised Caputo, calling him “a critical, integral part of the president’s coronavirus response, leading on public messaging as Americans need public health information to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The extraordinary Facebook comments came two days after Politico reported that Caputo and his press team had been demanding changes in CDC reports they believed were contrary to Trump's messaging on the virus.

Caputo confirmed that was the case in an interview with the Washington Post on Saturday. Referring to some of the CDC's scientific reports, he said "there’s concern across [HHS] that some of the scholarships has been tainted by politics,” Caputo said. “That’s my opinion.”

Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, the top Democrat on the Senate health committee, had called for Caputo's resignation on Monday. He's "a yes-man for President Trump with no scientific expertise who publicly attacked CDC scientists and privately interfered with key CDC reports," Murray said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., took it a step further and called on Azar to resign, saying he's been "entirely silent about the chaos and mismanagement" in the agency while failing to rein in "political appointees," a reference to Caputo.

Both the White House and HHS said Azar isn't going anywhere. “It’s stunning that the Democratic leader of the Senate would call for the resignation of the Health and Human Services Secretary in the middle of a pandemic,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere.

Caitlin Oakley, a spokesperson for HHS, said Schumer's comments were "uninformed and are an attempt to mislead the American people and discredit the historic work of the Trump Administration to combat Covid-19.”

Verdict

The Redmi 7 is a fairly good all-rounder that excels in the display and camera departments. Where it falls short, sadly, is in the overall build quality. It’s a great buy nonetheless.

Redmi 7 detailed review

If it rained in New Delhi as often as Xiaomi launched a new smartphone model, the capital city would be a whole lot cooler, don’t you think? Only last month, the Chinese electronics giant launched two new budget models under the Redmi brand name (Redmi Y3 and Redmi 7) with one more to follow (Redmi 7A). A little before that, it launched the Redmi Go, Xiaomi’s cheapest smartphone as of today, with Android Go running the show. While the Redmi Y3 was picked up for a review by my esteemed colleague Subhrojit, the Redmi 7 found its way to me. Having bid goodbye to the rather likeable Nokia 4.2, I picked it up to give it a proper go.

Redmi 7 in Lunar Red

Labelling it “the ultimate all-rounder”, Xiaomi has blessed the Redmi 7 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chipset, up to 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage space as standard. The screen measures 6.26 inches diagonally and sports a “dot notch” at the top for the selfie camera. Starting at a price of Rs 7,999 at the time of writing this review, the Redmi 7 comes in three colour options: Eclipse Black, Comet Blue, and Lunar Red. The latter two come with a gradient finish on the back. Read on to see how our Lunar Red review unit fared.

Build and Design

The Redmi 7’s front face gets Corning Gorilla Glass 5 to protect the display against minor scratches, while the back panel gets what appears to be a regular glossy plastic panel (Xiaomi hasn’t disclosed any specifics). A black plastic beading keeps the two panels together and houses all the ports and buttons. According to Xiaomi, the Redmi 7’s body comes with a P2i nano-coating that makes it splash-resistant but not waterproof, so it goes without saying that it does not get an IP rating. What this means for you is that you can call your Ola driver under a light spell of rain but not expose the Redmi 7 to a swimming pool.

Back panel is a fingerprint magnet

Though the review unit appeared to be built fairly well, there was one critical detail that occurred to me the minute I held it up in my hand: the rear panel didn’t fit the plastic frame very well, leaving just a bit of its sharp edge exposed on one side. It wasn’t sharp enough to cut a finger running over it but the poor fit made me wonder if the panel would ever come off in the future or weaken the phone’s structure greatly. In terms of build alone, the Redmi 7 could do better.

Back panel on left edge was too sharp

A fair number of budget smartphones come with a gradient finish on the back panel these days and the Redmi 7 is no different. It gives the phone a bit of much-needed class. Sadly, the glossy front and back panels of the Redmi 7 act as a powerful magnet for fingerprints and smudges. The top side of the phone is home to a 3.5mm audio jack, a secondary microphone, and an IR blaster. The left side houses just the SIM/microSD card tray.

Shrey loves showing off the two-tone back panel of the Redmi 7

3.5mm audio jack and Xiaomi-standard IR blaster

The bottom side reveals a microUSB port (for charging and data transfer) and loudspeaker grilles on either side of the port. Predictably, sound emanates from only one of those two grilles. The right side gets the power button and a volume rocker, both of which are sturdy and tactile. On the back, we see a dual camera setup with a visible camera bump and a fingerprint scanner, which, although positioned way too high up, works well for screen unlocks.

No USB-C here

Display and Audio

The IPS LCD screen on the Redmi 7 measures 6.26 inches diagonally. It has an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels. According to Xiaomi, it has a contrast ratio of 1500:1 and a screen-to-body ratio of nearly 87 percent. The pixel density sits at a decent 269 pixels per inch. According to our test kit, the review unit’s screen brightness went all the way up to 353 LUX, which is the going figure for phones of its segment. In comparison, the recently launched Nokia 4.2's display brightness maxed out at 333 LUX. Colours on the screen appeared vivid but seemed to have a light cool tinge about them. Maximum horizontal viewing angle sat somewhere close to a respectable 170 degrees. Surprisingly, there was almost no indication of light bleed from the LCD panel's backlight. All in all, the Redmi 7's display is well worth its salt.

Sound from the single down-firing loudspeaker is both loud and clear. Songs like The Weeknd’s Starboy played with a surprising amount of clarity across all three frequencies on the review unit. Low frequency sounds too were reproduced in the form of mild artificial thumps. Understandably, none of the low frequency sounds were felt from the tiny driver. In summary, the loudspeaker on the Redmi 7 does the job if you’re with your friends and want to show them a new song you’ve recently discovered. The earpiece, on the other hand, could do with a bit more volume for calls.

Performance and Gaming

The Redmi 7 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chipset. First announced in June last year, the chip has a 14-nanometre octa-core processor, which consists of four Kryo 250 Gold processor cores and four Kryo 250 Silver processor cores, all clocking at 1.8GHz. The budget Xiaomi phone is offered in two variants: one with 2GB of RAM (at Rs 7,999) and another with 3GB of RAM (at Rs 8,999). Our review unit was the latter. Internal storage on both variants is a standard 32GB. External storage in the form of a microSD card goes all the way up to 512GB.

In our benchmark tests, the Redmi 7 review unit fared pretty well. On AnTuTu 7.0, it scored 104809. In comparison, the costlier Nokia 4.2 (with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chipset and 3GB of RAM) scored 62985 in the same test. On Geekbench Single-Core and Multi-Core tests, the Redmi 7 bagged 1240 and 4370 respectively. In comparison, the Nokia 4.2 managed 894 and 3338 in the same two tests respectively.

In everyday use scenarios, the Redmi 7 review unit performed satisfactorily. Launching, minimising, closing, and switching between apps was a trouble-free experience. There was no visible sign of lag or delay while jumping between numerous tabs in Chrome or while multitasking in general. I was able to browse and play videos online even comfortably even where there was some background activity going on, like app installations and game updates. If anything, there was that occasional stutter in animation while minimising and jumping between apps. But these hiccups didn’t necessarily slow the phone down; they only exposed the GPU’s limitation.

The Redmi 7 review unit scored 916 in 3DMark’s Sling Shot GPU benchmark test. In comparison, the Nokia 4.2 scored 821. During our gaming sessions, Asphalt 9 ran at a median frame rate of 29 frames per second on the Redmi 7. PUBG Mobile, on the other hand, ran on forced Low graphics settings at a median frame rate of 26 frames per second. During actual gameplay, some elements in Asphalt 9 (like the car’s spoiler) were slightly pixelated but the animation seemed mostly consistent and stutter-free. The metrics for Asphalt 9 and PUBG Mobile were recorded using GameBench. To sum it up, the Redmi 7 is not for serious gamers but isn't a terrible choice if you're looking to play popular titles like PUBG Mobile on a budget.

Camera

The Redmi 7 comes with a dual camera setup on the back and a single selfie shooter in the front. The rear cameras consist of a 12-megapixel 1.25μm primary sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 2-megapixel depth sensor for portrait shots. They’re accompanied by a single LED flash. The selfie shooter is an 8-megapixel 1.12μm sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. According to Xiaomi, the shooters on the back feature “AI” for scene detection, portrait mode, and a function called Beautify 4.0.

Photos taken through the Redmi 7’s primary rear camera in daylight appear to be rich in colour even if the colours are a tad bit on the warmer side. Photos taken through Portrait mode in daylight are rendered quite well without any glaring errors in blurring the foreground subject. Selfies come out bright in daylight but suffer from a fair amount of noise when taken indoors. The camera app is eager to “beautify” faces but the beauty level can be turned down or even switched off altogether. Lowlight photos shot through the primary camera are bright but appear distorted around sources of light. Lowlight selfies, on the other hand, suffer from a good amount of noise.

The default camera app is both easy to use and quick to react. Unlike the Nokia 4.2, whose default camera app is unbearably slow and ungainly, the Redmi 7 doesn’t suffer from unexpected stalls and hiccups while running the camera app. It even has options to take square photos (so they’re Instagram-ready) and a Pro mode (which allows digital tweaking of ISO speed, aperture, shutter speed, and white balance). To sum it up, the Redmi 7 churns out surprisingly respectable photos, given the phone’s modest price tag.

Software

Like its brethren, the Redmi 7 comes with MIUI 10.2, the latest version of Xiaomi’s proprietary smartphone firmware that’s slapped on top of Android 9 Pie. The UI is fairly intuitive and easy to use for new and seasoned smartphone users alike. Like the previous iterations of the UI, MIUI 10 doesn’t have a definite app drawer; all the apps can be launched straight from the home screen. As an optional feature, MIUI comes with the latest form of gestures for navigation, which is identical to the one seen on iPhones and to the one Android Q is supposed to feature. It also comes with numerous theme and wallpaper options. Despite that and the many features MIUI brings (its own set of everyday tools, like a calendar, calculator, etc.), I am personally not a fan of MIUI for one big reason: it comes filled with a tonne of ads and bloatware.

Battery

The Redmi 7 sports a 4,000mAh non-removable battery. On our standard battery benchmark test, the review unit lasted 545 minutes, which exceeds the Nokia 4.2’s score by only 15 minutes on the same test. For your reference, the Nokia 4.2 sports a much smaller 3,000mAh battery. In everyday use scenarios, the Redmi 7 review unit lasted somewhere close to two full days on a single charge.

During the tests, the phone was put through many sessions of web browsing, gaming, online video playback, and simultaneous app installs and downloads. Even after a day of medium-to-heavy use, the battery only fell from 100 to 60 percent. Leaving the phone unattended for nearly an entire day didn’t seem to have too big an impact on the battery (less than a 5-percent drop), which means standby battery consumption on the Redmi 7 is fairly meagre. The Redmi 7 should last you up to one and a half days even with fairly heavy use.

Bottom Line

The Redmi 7 offers a good load of value for its price. The budget Xiaomi phone does surprisingly well on the display and camera fronts. Its performance too is up to the mark. PUBG Mobile players on a budget should be quite happy with its ability to push pixels. All things considered, the Redmi 7 really is a fairly good all-rounder. What’s its Achilles heel then? Build quality, easily, especially on the back. I wish the edge of the rear panel didn’t threaten to scratch my finger every time I lifted the phone up.

In Break With Past, UAE And Bahrain Forge Ties With Israel At White House

US President Donald Trump speaks prior to signing the Abraham Accords

Washington:

The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed agreements on Tuesday to establish formal ties with Israel, becoming the first Arab states in a quarter century to break a longstanding taboo, in a strategic realignment of Middle East countries against Iran.

US President Donald Trump hosted the White House ceremony, capping a dramatic month when first the UAE and then Bahrain agreed to reverse decades of ill will without a resolution of Israel's dispute with the Palestinians.

In front of a crowd of several hundred people on the White House lawn, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed accords with Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan and Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani.

The deals, denounced by the Palestinians, make them the third and fourth Arab states to take such steps toward normalizing relations since Israel signed peace treaties with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994.

Meeting Netanyahu earlier in the Oval Office, Trump said, "We'll have at least five or six countries coming along very quickly" to forge their own accords with Israel.

Later Trump told reporters a third Gulf Arab state, Saudi Arabia, would strike an agreement with Israel "at the right time." The Saudi cabinet stressed in a statement the need for a "just and comprehensive solution" to the Palestinian issue.

Saudi Arabia is the biggest Gulf Arab power. Its king is custodian of Islam's holiest sites and rules the world's largest oil exporter. Despite its own reluctance, the kingdom's quiet acquiescence to the agreements was seen as crucial.

"Change The Course Of History"

The ceremony provided Trump with valuable imagery as he tries to hold on to power in a November 3 presidential election. Flags of the United States, Israel, the UAE and Bahrain were in abundance.

"We're here this afternoon to change the course of history," Trump said from the White House balcony.

Trump called the deals "a major stride in which people of all faiths and backgrounds live together in peace and prosperity" and declared that the three Middle East countries "are going to work together, they are friends."

The back-to-back agreements mark an improbable diplomatic victory for Trump. He has spent his presidency forecasting deals on such intractable problems as North Korea's nuclear program only to find achievements elusive.

Bringing Israel, the UAE and Bahrain together reflects their shared concern about Iran's rising influence in the region and development of ballistic missiles. Iran criticized both deals.

All three of the Middle East leaders hailed the agreements and Trump's role in glowing terms, with Netanyahu saying it gave hope to "all the people of Abraham."

But the UAE and Bahraini officials both sought to reassure the Palestinians that their countries were not abandoning them or their quest for statehood in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, despite the Palestinian leadership having decried the deals as a betrayal of their cause.

In a sign that regional strife is sure to continue while the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains unresolved, Palestinian militants fired rockets from Gaza into Israel during the ceremony, the Israeli military said.

Israel's Magen David Adom ambulance service said paramedics treated two men for light injuries from flying glass in Ashdod, and four others suffered shock.

"This is not peace, this is surrender in return for the continuation of the aggression," read a tweet posted on the Twitter account of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Trump's Evangelical Support

With Trump seeking four more years, the accords could help shore up support among pro-Israel Christian evangelical voters, an important part of his political base.

Another target of the White House plans, in addition to Saudi Arabia, is Oman, whose leader spoke with Trump last week. Oman sent its ambassador to Tuesday's ceremony, a senior US official said. No Saudi representative attended.

Meeting the Emirati foreign minister before the ceremony, Trump thanked the UAE for being first in the Gulf to agree on normalizing ties with Israel and left little doubt the Iran issue was overhanging the event.

Trump predicted that Iran, under heavy US sanctions, would want to reach a deal with Washington, which has been trying to get it to renegotiate an international nuclear accord. Tehran shows no sign of budging.

Israel's pact with the UAE, titled "Treaty of Peace, Diplomatic Relations, and Full Normalization," was more detailed and went further than the Bahraini document, declaring peace between countries that never fought a war against each other.

Israel's agreement with Bahrain called for "full diplomatic relations" but avoided the term normalization.

Both documents cited the need to justly resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but neither specifically mentioned a two-state solution.

In a nod to the coronavirus, the White House encouraged but did not require participants to wear masks. It was left to the leaders whether to shake hands, and they did not do so in public. Most people in the crowd did not wear masks.

Some differences remain despite warming ties. Trump said on Tuesday he would have no problem selling advanced stealth F-35 fighter jets to the UAE, which for years has sought to obtain them. Israel, which has the F-35, objects to such a sale.

Frustrated by the Palestinians' refusal to take part in Trump's Middle East peace initiative, the White House has sought to bypass them in hopes they will see the deals with the UAE and Bahrain as incentives, even leverage, for peace talks.

Speaking to Fox News hours before the ceremony, Trump predicted the Palestinians would eventually forge peace with Israel or else be "left out in the cold."

The Palestinian leadership has long accused Trump of pro-Israel bias and denounced the Arab rapprochement with Israel, even though Netanyahu agreed, in return for normalization with the UAE, to suspend a plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

Although Israeli-Palestinian negotiations broke down in 2014, some Gulf Arab states and several other Arab countries have long had quiet, informal contacts with Israel.

New Realme Smartphone Series Teased by Executive, May Come With Snapdragon 875 SoC

Realme new phone series is tipped to come with 125W fast charging support

Highlights
  • Realme has confirmed that it is working on new phone series
  • Past reports suggest it will have Opp Ace series-like phones
  • Realme new series phone may be powered by Snapdragon 875 SoC

Realme may be working on a new smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 875 SoC. Xu Qi Chase, President of Global Marketing and Vice President at Realme, teased the arrival of a new series. He didn't offer any timeline for launch, but noted that the upcoming phone will be powered by a 5nm flagship chipset, which sounds likely to be the upcoming Snapdragon 875 SoC. The current Snapdragon 865 SoC range is based on the 7nm FinFET process.

Chase took to Weibo to share a new poster that details main series announced by Realme including the Q series, V series, and X series. The poster hints at a new smartphone range in the offing, and Chase writes that the new smartphone will incorporate a 5nm flagship processor. He is likely talking about the unannounced Snapdragon 875 SoC, which should be based on 5nm process, given that the Snapdragon 865 SoC is based on 7nm process. However, at this stage it is just an educated guess as the company has not given more details.

This same poster was leaked in the past with the claim that Oppo is discontinuing its Ace series after launching just two phones in it. In turn, Realme will look to introduce similar Ace-like high-performing phones in a new smartphone series. The branding of this series is not known yet, neither is there any information on the launch timeline.

Previous report also suggests that the phone in this series will have 125W fast charging support that was introduced by Oppo recently. The company claims that this fast charging tech is able to charge a 4,000mAh battery up to 41 percent in just five minutes and fully charge it in 20 minutes.

Nissan Unveils The Z Proto - carandbike

Nissan Unveils The Z Proto

The Nissan Z Proto pays homage to 50 years of Z heritage.

expand View Photos

Nissan has unveiled the Z Proto, signaling the company's intent to launch a new generation of the legendary Z sports car. Shown at a virtual event the prototype car features a new design inside and out, as well as a V-6 twin turbocharged engine with a manual transmission. The Nissan Z Proto pays homage to 50 years of Z heritage.

Penned and developed by the design team in Japan, the Z Proto boasts of a fresh, attractive exterior design with a silhouette that looks more like the old model. It sports a bright yellow pearlescent paint – a tribute to a popular paint scheme on both the first generation Z (S30) and the 300ZX (Z32) – and a black roof.

Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said, “The Z, as a pure sports car, represents the spirit of Nissan. It's a key model in our Nissan NEXT transformation plan, and it's proof of our ability to do what others don't dare to do, from A to Z. As a Z fan myself, I'm excited to announce that the next Z is coming."

The shape of the hood and the canted, teardrop-shaped LED headlights are both unmistakable reminders of the original Z. The rectangular grille's dimensions are similar to the current model with the addition of oval grille fins to offer an updated modern look. The form continues to exude both sportiness and elegance.

The link to the original Z is most striking when viewing the Z Proto from the side. The roofline flows from the nose to the squared-off rear to create a distinctive first-generation Z profile whose rear edge was slightly lower than the front fender height giving the Z its unique posture. The signature transition from the rear quarter glass to the low-slung position of the rear tail adds to the effect.

The rear takes inspiration from the 300ZX (Z32) taillights, reinterpreted for the modern world. Set within a rectangular black section that runs across the rear and wraps around the outer edges, the LED taillights convey a sharp glow. Lightweight carbon fibre treatments on the side skirts, front lower lip and rear valance are all there to enhance performance and the 19-inch alloy wheels and dual exhausts complete the Z Proto's looks.

The interior design team sought advice from professional motorsports legends to give the Z Proto an ideal sports car cabin, both for road and track. This can be seen in the Z's instrumentation. All vital information is found in the 12.3-inch digital meter display and arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, such as the redline shift point at the twelve o-clock position.

The new, deep dish steering wheel offers the driver quick access controls without losing its vintage aesthetic. Yellow accents are found throughout the cabin, including stitching on the instrument panel. The seats feature special yellow accenting and a layered gradation stripe in the centre of the seats to create depth.

The family of a teenager found dead 11 days after going missing nearly three years ago said "vital questions" about her death remain unanswered.
Gaia Pope, 19, was found near the Dorset coastal path in November 2017.
At a pre-inquest review hearing Ms Pope's family asked to delay the full inquest into her death due to "significant gaps in the evidence".
Coroner Rachael Griffin granted the request. The inquest, previously set for January, has been put back to May.
Ms Pope's family said: "Vital questions about Gaia's death - and the adequacy of local support services - remain unanswered."

Speaking after the hearing at Bournemouth Coroner's Court on Tuesday, Ms Pope's cousin Marienna Pope-Weidemann thanked the coroner for granting the delay.
"We know that there are significant gaps in the evidence," she said.
"The one thing we want more than for this to be over is for this to be effective and prevent future harm.
"We are not satisfied that those criteria have been met at this time. Gaia deserves a full and fearless inquest."
Ms Pope's twin sister, Maya Pope-Sutherland, said: "We have waited such a long time for answers.
"We are here to speak for her, to stand for her - I want to thank Gaia for giving me the strength to do this, I'm sorry that we lost her along the way."
Her family believe she died due to failings by police and mental health services following an allegation of rape.
At the pre-inquest hearing, Ms Griffin said the inquest will not look at how police investigated Ms Pope's allegation.
But it will look at the impact it had on her mental health - and how she was treated by health services from 2015.

Following Ms Pope's disappearance on 7 November, searches by police, the coastguard and police helicopter - along with hundreds of volunteers - were carried out in the Swanage area.
Her body was found by police on 18 November, close to where items of her clothing had been found two days earlier.
A post-mortem examination concluded she died of hypothermia.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigated both the handling of the search for Gaia and the rape allegation.

HIV self testing will bridge transmission control gaps – CiSHAN

    Published

    on

The Civil Society on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, CiSHAN, has called on the Global Fund and other donor agencies to increase their commitment to HIV Self Testing in Nigeria as a means of reaching the unreached population, especially adolescents. young persons and other vulnerable populations,

This is as the HIV advocacy group commenced advocacy to create a culture of HIV self-testing among Nigerians at all levels.

The campaign, which is expected to reach all corners of the country, is in a bid to get at least 10 million young Nigerians tested for their HIV status by the end of 2020.

The move is also part of efforts to support the federal government in its goal to reach its first 95 of the 95-95-95 global target of halting the transmission of HIV by the year 2030.

The Executive Secretary, CiSHAN, Dr. Walter Ugwuocha says aside from the need to increase the number of Nigerians with access to HIV testing, the campaign will identify newly diagnosed HIV positive individuals and link them up with treatment centres for expedited care.

A 2018 National AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (2018) had revealed that Nigeria was still far from achieving its set targets in HIV control, a situation that was further worsened by the advent of the COVID-19 outbreak.

CISHAN noted that the inability of patients to access treatment during the COVID -19 lockdown could have gravely set back gains already made by Nigeria in the control of HIV, despite concerted efforts to reach a few with lifesaving treatments during the heat of the pandemic.

‘‘Our strategy is focused on creating awareness and demand for HIV self-testing in Nigeria. We intend to utilise over 5000 members of the organisation located in the 774 local government areas of Nigeria to facilitate access to HIV self-testing kits in both rural and hard to reach areas, Dr. Walter explained.

‘This campaign is code-named HIV Self-Testing Campaign: Getting 10Million Nigerians to know their HIV status through HIV Self-Testing’’ He said.

He said ‘‘We have commenced community discussion on making HIV Self Testing kits work for Pregnant women across the country and how the National government (FMoH & NPHCDA) can make it available & accessible to them especially those who would and cannot patronize government facilities.

The group wants all its constituent members to accept the national rollout of the HIV self-testing program as it can help in closing the huge HIV testing gap and ensuring the country achieves the first 95 in the HIV response.

CiSHAN has also urged the Federal Ministry of Health, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and various state Ministries, Agencies and Departments involved with the HIV/AIDS response to disseminate HIV Self Testing guidelines urgently.

The ‘Broke’ Billionaire: Duty Free King Secretly Gives Away All of His Fortune to Charity

Charles 'Chuck' Feeney gave all of his money to charities anonymously.

Charles 'Chuck' Feeney anonymously donated more than $8 billion to charities, universities and foundations worldwide through his foundation.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:42 PM IST

Charles 'Chuck' Feeney, the former billionaire co-founder of airport retail giant Duty Free Shoppers, is now broke after giving away his massive fortune to charity.

The 89-year-old, who lived a frugal life, has donated more than $8 billion to charities, universities and foundations worldwide through his foundation, the Atlantic Philanthropies.

Feeney had pioneered the idea of Giving While Living, the idea to spending one’s fortune on big charitable donations during one's lifetime instead of creating a foundation upon death. He was famous for his promise that he will give all his money away to charitable causes, and he fulfilled his dream this month. And he insists he couldn’t be happier.

“We learned a lot. We would do some things differently, but I am very satisfied. I feel very good about completing this on my watch,” Feeney told Forbes.

In 2012, Feeney said he set aside $2million for his and his wife’s retirement with plans to donate the rest.

The philanthropist gave all of his money to charities anonymously, and even went to great lengths to keep his donations a secret. For that, he is known as the James Bond of Philanthropy.

Now, his extreme charitable contributions are no longer a secret. His foundation, which was dissolved on September 14, donated for efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland, helped modernise the health care system of Vietnam, and focused on expanding education.

He gave $3.7billion to education – including nearly $1billion to his alma mater Cornell, more than $870million to human rights and social change. He also gave more than $700million in gifts to health causes ranging from a $270million grant to improve public healthcare in Vietnam to a $176million gift to the Global Brain Health Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.

One of his final gifts was a $350million donation to Cornell for the university to build a technology campus on New York City’s Roosevelt Island.

Not one to boast about giving his money away, Feney urged other billionaires to also take the Giving While Living pledge. “Try it, you’ll like it” is his message.

It was his generosity that had influenced Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in launching the Giving Pledge in 2010 – a campaign for the world’s wealthy to give away at least half their fortune before death.

“Chuck created a path for other philanthropists to follow. I remember meeting him before starting the Giving Pledge. He told me we should encourage people not to give just 50 percent but as much as possible during their lifetime. No one is a better example of that than Chuck. Many people talk to me about how he inspired them. It is truly amazing,' Bill Gates said.

Today, the businessman lives in a modest apartment in San Francisco with a plaque that says 'Congratulations to Chuck Feeney for $8billion of philanthropic giving'.

    Verdict

The Sony HT-X8500 brings with it good performance especially considering the fact that it doesn't have a subwoofer. It has eARC, making it futureproof, one 4K HDR passthrough and simple design. The bundled remote control is functional as well. The overall sound output is good for those looking for better sound when compared to TV speakers and don't want to delve into a complicated soundbar solution, or don't have space for it. On the downside, the virtual surround feature is gimmicky.

Sony HT-X8500 Single 2.1Ch Soundbar detailed review

Soundbars have become popular over the past couple of years to compensate for the lacklustre quality of sound output from TVs. Today, soundbars pack in quite a punch in terms of sound as well as features. From having smart assistants built-in, being modular in nature and even boasting of a complete home theatre experience, soundbars today have become an exhaustive category in themselves.

Over the past year, we have seen a lot of brands launch Soundbars without a subwoofer such as the Mi Soundbar (review), Bose Soundbar 700 (review) and more. Today we have with us a new addition to this category - the Sony HT-X8500. The device is compact, comes without a subwoofer and is the first soundbar we’ve tested that boasts of eARC. Priced at Rs 29,900 is the Sony HT-X8500, a worthy contender, or are you better off looking at other soundbars in the sub 30k price range? Let's find out!

    What’s in the box

In the box, you get the soundbar itself along with a remote control. You also get two AAA batteries, HDMI cable and of course, the power cable. One thing to note is that the adapter is external and if your wall socket is further away from the place where you want to place the soundbar, you may want to think strategically on how to hide the power brick. I also wish the cable that connected the power brick to the wall was a little longer as in our setup the power brick was hanging off the table a bit. The remote control accompanying the system is simple and in line with what we've seen from Sony in the past. There is a 'Vertical Surround' button on the remote and we will delve into that in later sections. Know that when you use ARC to connect the soundbar to the TV, you can control the bar from the comfort of the TV remote.

    Connectivity options

When it comes to connectivity options, the soundbar has an HDMI port for eARC/ARC and one HDMI pass-through port that supports 4K HDR pass through. In the same price range, we have seen soundbars like the JBL SB450 (review) with 3 HDMI passthrough ports with 4K HDR passthrough. The Sony HT-X8500 also has an optical port and has Bluetooth 5 connectivity. Speaking of formats supported, the speaker does boast of support for DTS-X and Dolby Atmos which is nice. However, without top firing speakers or rear speakers, we were interested to see how the object-based surround sound works on this bar. There is no Alexa or Google Assistant support with this speaker either.

    Setting up the Sony HT-X8500

Setting up the speaker is as easy as placing it below your TV, connecting it via HDMI and you are good to go. However, there is one thing to keep in mind here. If you are using a smart TV that has HDMI 1.4, then you won't see the “Dolby Atmos” tag in relevant Netflix content. When connected to a TV with HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2 support) we saw the Dolby Atmos tag appear in Netflix content and this is something to keep in mind when purchasing the soundbar. It will work with your current FHD (HDMI 1.4) TV and when you upgrade to a 4K TV, you will notice the slight difference in the audio quality. This is great as it future proofs your sound setup.

    Build and design

Speaking of the design of the soundbar, it is available in one colour only - black. The top of the soundbar has a matte textured finish with LED indicators and touch buttons for functions such as power, source, Bluetooth and volume controls. The touch buttons are quite sensitive and can be controlled with just a light tap. But they aren't so soft as to respond to accidental touches. The LED Indicators represent Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Vertical Surround, TV, HDMI and Bluetooth. Once you know which LED indicator is for what, it is easy to identify the source that is currently active. However, some may prefer a traditional display for source and volume information. When you control the volume, all the LED’s light up sequentially to show the level of output sound. All of them are lit to indicate full volume and then from the right to left they gradually start dimming, one by one, to signify a reduction in volume. This is a small change, but one that eliminates the need for a display on the soundbar. The LED’s are not too bright, so using them in a pitch dark room does not hamper the experience. The textured matte finish on the top is nice, does not attract fingerprints or dust and gives the soundbar a clean look.

All the connectivity ports are laid out at the back, in a cavity on the right. It is easy to reach and neatly laid out. There is another cavity on the left that houses the power port. You also have the option to wall mount the soundbar if you like.

Coming to the bottom, it has a metal finish with rubber feet strategically laid out to prevent vibrations. The rubber feet are small and don't elevate the soundbar too much, which is nice.

The front of the soundbar is dominated by the metal grill and if you shine enough light on them, you can see the four drivers powering it. Two are in the middle and one on either side. On the right and the left of the soundbar, you have the ducts for your bass output.

Overall, the build of the soundbar is extremely solid, better than the JBL SB 450 bar, has a clean look and finish and looks minimalistic in a home theatre setup. Just the way we like it.

    Performance

For around the same price (give or take a few thousand rupees), you can get soundbars with a subwoofer. So how does the Sony HT-X8500 perform? Well, in a nutshell, the soundbar has good sound reproduction and channel shift especially when you use it in a bedroom (12 feet x 15 feet). In a larger room, the surround effects are lost. Needless to say that out of the box, the Virtual surround feature is gimmicky. It does expand the sound stage of the audio coming from the speaker, but it is nowhere close to giving you a Dolby Atmos like experience.

We’ve broken down the performance section into movies, music and gaming performance.

    Movies

Watch movies and you will realize that the soundbar has a clear reproduction of sound. The dialogue is clearly audible even if there is a background score playing. From the bike chase sequence in Mission: Impossible to the guns firing all over the place in the Matrix and even in shows like Altered Carbon where you have gunfights and bullets whizzing all around, the soundbar does a good job of immersing you. Even though the sound is coming from directly in front of you, the channel separation is good. The bass though present seems lacking especially when you are watching an action movie like Mission: Impossible. The thud that brings you into the action is present but lacking. Dialogue is very clear, even in the heat of battle in a movie like John Wick.

    Music

The Music performance of the Sony soundbar is what you’d expect from a Sony speaker. It is also dependent on the kind of music you listen to. So with classic rock, where the bass isn’t necessarily overpowering, it sounds clean. Vocals are distinguishable from the instruments and highs are clear. Electronic music like Daft Punk is clear where you can make out sounds of the synthesizer. Heavy metal music lovers will feel the lack of bass. The speaker doesn't distort at loud volumes and you can use this as the centrepiece when you have a party at home. At 70 per cent volume, the soundbar sounds really loud and you don't need to pump it higher. But you can and we went up to 90 per cent and the audio did not distort. It got really loud though.

    Gaming

For gaming, we played Marvel's Spider-Man, God of War and Doom. Channel separation works well in all the games and when you turn your character around in the middle of a conversation or battle, the sound shifts on the speaker too which is good. In a game like Doom, the shotgun sound is dominated by a subwoofer, but honestly, I didn't miss it. Sure, when you switch to a soundbar with a sub, you can clearly make out the difference, but considering the performance of the device as a bar alone,  it works rather well. Even in Spider-Man, the gushing of wind and the swish of the webs is well pronounced.

Overall, if you lack the space, or don't want a subwoofer for some reason or want a simple plug and play solution and are worried that the bass is lost, then worry not. For the average-sized bedroom, this is a good no-nonsense soundbar. However, know that in all the above tests, we switched on and off the virtual surround mode. It did increase the sound stage a little bit, but it doesn't come close to giving you a true Dolby Atmos experience.

For bass heavy performance in a large living room, you can check out the JBL SB 450 (Review).

    Remote control

The bundled remote control with the soundbar is simple and traditional - something we have seen with many Sony sound systems. All the buttons are on two vertical columns with the volume controls in the centre. On the remote control, you have the options for input, control for the various modes, a mute button. Buttons like Voice and DTS Dialogue help with boosting the vocals if you like, whereas functions like Night ensure the loud explosions and guns in action movies don't get too loud. You can make out the difference when switching between different modes and those that don't want to delve into settings can use the Auto Sound options.

    Bottom line

So, here’s the ever-important question. Should you spend 30K on this soundbar? Well, the answer lies in what it is that you are looking for. If you want loud bass and are looking for an immersive home theatre-like experience with no compromise on bass, then there are other options to choose from. However, if you are looking for a bar to upgrade the sound of your TV and also want it to double up as a multimedia speaker, then you can consider it. It works well for content consumption like movies, games and even music. It also supports formats like DTS-X and Dolby Atmos. However, apart from slightly increasing the fidelity, don't expect to hear the sound from all around you as the vertical surround effects are gimmicky.

Bihar Assembly Election: Chirag Paswan Urges BJP To Fight On More Seats Than JD(U) In Bihar Polls

Chirag Paswan Urges BJP To Fight On More Seats Than JD(U) In Bihar Polls

Chirag Paswan Urges BJP To Fight On More Seats Than JD(U) In Bihar Polls

Chirag Paswan met BJP President JP Nadda on Tuesday, sources said (File)

    New Delhi:

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Chirag Paswan has urged BJP president JP Nadda that the party should fight more seats than the Janata Dal (United) in the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar coming in for criticism at a meeting of LJP leaders, including MPs, on Wednesday.

LJP sources said Chirag Paswan met Mr Nadda on Tuesday and suggested that the BJP should be fighting on more seats than the Nitish Kumar-headed JD(U).

The BJP, JD(U) and the LJP are members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance in the state, and seat-sharing talks among these parties are going on for the elections to the 243-member assembly.

Both the JD(U) and BJP had fought on 17 Lok Sabha seats each in 2019, leaving the remaining six to the LJP.

The JD(U) believes that it should get more seats to contest than the BJP for the assembly polls as it has more MLAs. The BJP has made no official comment on its likely share of seats.

The LJP and the JD(U) have been in a war of words, with Chirag Paswan often taking aim at the functioning of the Bihar government under Nitish Kumar.

In the meeting of LJP leaders, Nitish Kumar's administration came under severe criticism while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was lauded for launching a number of development projects for the state. Some leaders said that the party should contest against the JD(U) in the upcoming polls.

They also criticised the state government's handling of the flood situation, coronavirus pandemic and migrants crisis, sources said.

The 5k segment does come with compromises, but the Xolo Era 1X doesn’t really provide a good smartphone experience. It has a good camera, but that’s about the only thing it has going for it. We’d recommend spending 2k more on the Redmi 3s.

    Xolo Era 1X detailed review

Technology has slowly been trickling down from budget smartphones to the more affordable sub-5K categories. While phones that cost less than Rs. 10,000 are extremely powerful today, the sub-5k segment is yet to see a big revolution. The Xolo Era 1X is one of those devices, and it supports 4G LTE connectivity. The question is, has Xolo done enough?

    Build and Design
One could argue that at its price, there are no smartphones that set a good example for design. The sub-5k smartphone hasn’t seen a decently built device since the Yu Yunique, and the Xolo Era 1X doesn’t change that. I’m not expecting metal and glass at this price, but the Era 1X feels outdated, which I don’t like.

The Era 1x is not as ergonomic as other 5-inch devices, with thicker bezels around the display making it a tad wider than other devices sporting 5-inch displays. In addition, the lack of protective Glass on the display also hurts the overall experience.

There are only two good things worth mentioning about the build and design. First, the two physical buttons, including the power key and the volume rocker, have good tactile feel, and second, the chrome band around the sides is aesthetically nice.

    Display and UI
The Xolo Era 1X has a 5-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720p resolution. This is fast becoming a category standard. However, the quality of the display is still only at par with the Xolo One HD that came out more than six months ago.

While it is one of the better displays under 5K, there is scope for improvement. The colours are fine, but not worth writing home about. The same can be said about the touch experience and the brightness, which at 491 lux is nothing noteworthy.

Coming to the UI, the vanilla Android approach is likeable, and the fact that the Era 1X runs on Android Marshmallow gives it a distinct edge over the competition. However, it has only 8GB of storage and quite a few pre-loaded apps. As a result, I ran out of space on the device quite easily.

    Performance
The processor brings the Xolo Era 1X to its knees. It has a 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC9830 SoC and it lags on regular apps like Facebook, YouTube, Maps etc. Even at this price, this is unacceptable from a phone today. The experience on phones that cost just about 1k more is miles better.

The SoC can’t handle multitasking well and the gaming experience is quite unacceptable too. The phone lags on reasonably simple games like Badlands, and Asphalt Nitro brought it to its knees easily. That being said, the phone doesn't get excessively hot even while gaming. I recorded a maximum temperature of 36 degrees while gaming and the temperatures went up to 38 degrees while video recording.

Call reception and audio quality on the other hand is better than average and since the phone does support 4G, you will get better network speeds. That said, the browsing experience is sub-par, thanks to the slow processor.

    Battery
The Xolo Era 1X should last you about a work day, but only just. Under heavy usage it’ll need charging more often and its budget pricing means it doesn’t support fast charge either. Gaming and camera usage deplete the battery really fast.

    Camera
If all of the above doesn’t irk you, then you might actually find this phone worth buying now. The Xolo Era 1X has a good camera for its price. The 8MP rear shooter is best under well lit conditions, with decent colour reproduction and admirable details.

The dynamic range is low and the HDR mode won’t fix it either. Low light images will show noise, but despite all this the Era 1X has the best camera among the sub-5K phones.

    View post on imgur.com

The front facing camera does a decent job as well, but a strange pink hue is visible in some images. For low light, the front facing camera is aided by a flash but it just makes the subject yellow.

    Bottomline
The Xolo Era 1X is not your best bet in this price range. It has a good camera, but everything else about it gets in the way of user experience. Yes, the 5k segment does come with compromises, but this experience isn’t worth spending on. We’d recommend spending an extra 2k to buy the Redmi 3S.

Kangana's Heavy Heart And Bollywood Response - by Shobhaa De

Kangana's Heavy Heart And Bollywood Response - by Shobhaa De

This is what happens during an ugly divorce - a laundry load of dirty linen is hung up for public viewing, and the owner of the laundry runs away. Think of the latest Bollywood controversy that erupted when Samajwadi MP Jaya Bachchan spoke during Zero Hour on the opening day of this session of parliament. Let's call it a dramatic 'First Day, First Show' moment, which is common currency in showbiz. Over to Bollywood vs. Bollywood.

Mrs. B took off and how! Known for her outspokenness and straight talk, inside and outside of parliament, Jaya decided it was about time someone (she!) put things in perspective about the entire 'Charsi Bollywood' debate that has become a news story ever since Sushant Singh Rajput's tragic death. Bollywood has never had it this bad, and as a veteran actor, Jaya obviously felt incensed enough to silence a few loudmouths who she says are giving a terrible name to the entire film industry by painting everybody with the same brush.

Starting with Loudmouth No.1. On the face of it, the obvious object of her ire was BJP MP. Ravi Kishan, who had spoken about the "drug addiction in the film industry". Jaya Bachchan would have none of it! What drug cartel was this chap talking about? She accused her co-parliamentarian of ingratitude, referencing a common Hindi saying involving a food-laden thaali. In short, this insensitive man was biting the hand that has fed him and made him what he is. She was equally upset by the manner in which social media was 'flogging' the film community at large, and, fumed the lady, the government was not doing a damn thing about! Tch! Tch! This is pretty shabby of the sarkar. The movie industry, as Jaya pointed out, provides direct employment to 5 lakh people and indirect employment to 5 million! Some of India's highest tax-payers are movie stars! Plus, the patriotic film community always stands by the government in times of national crisis.

    atnt67oo

Jaya Bachchan sharply rebutted BJP MP and film actor Ravi Kishan's comments in parliament about drug addiction in Bollywood

Don't forget, the film industry also brings a great deal of international fame and recognition. Take a bow, Chaitanya Tamhane - Bollywood may now give you the recognition Venice just did! Naturally, Jaya was distressed by the lack of government support. She demanded 'protection' (no, not the Y-Category wala protection - that's reserved for another outspoken film industry lady). But first, the BJP parliamentarian had to be shown his proper place. For Ravi Kishan had had the temerity to badmouth Bollywood! Imagine his nerve! Jaya Bachchan is seriously bugged - how dare he? This sort of targeting and tarnishing of an industry that has created and nurtured him - and thousands like him - was clearly an act of ingratitude, thundered Mrs. B. And she wants the 'slander' to end. She has found support within the film community - it's always a good move to attempt damage control as a cohesive, united industry, protecting its own interests. Jaya B's got your back, guys!

Ravi Kishan hastily back tracked and swallowed his words (nothing was left behind on the empty thaali) as he weakly explained his position, making it worse for himself. He said things were different in his time, squarely accusing the present generation of stars of being naughty. Let me not go into his bizarre conspiracy theory - the one about Pakistan-China getting together to destroy our great and glorious film industry by drugging it. Wait a minute - why does Pakistan feature so prominently in Bollywood controversies these days?

    Aha, Enter Kangana Ranaut!

She got Jaya Bachchan's goat by calling Bollywood a 'gutter'. Gutter, not sewer. Not nullah. There's one hell of a lot of glitz in that gutter, I guess. So, nobody has really cared to notice the grime and garbage underneath. Nobody, that is, except Kangana Ranaut (correct spelling right here, mediawalas, please note). Ms. Ranaut is back in Manali, relieved to have left the gutter behind. Her heart is heavy. Very heavy. But Jaya Bachchan is not interested in Kangana Ranaut's heart. Like everybody else, she is wondering what will emerge next as her statement. A lot, as it turned out. Ms. Ranaut came straight to the point, got intensely personal and asked bluntly if Mama Bachchan would have said what she did in parliament had her own children been targeted the way she, Kangana Ranaut, has been singled out and attacked. We breathlessly await Mrs. B's response. Maybe she'll point out to Ms. Ranaut that her own, exceptionally well-behaved children (Shweta and Abhishek) have not compared Mumbai to PoK? And does anybody really think the Bachchan bachchas are 'out of control'? No, na? But someone out there clearly is...theek hai?

    ciglib8g

Kangana Ranaut asked if Ms Bachchan would react in the same manner if her daughter or son were affected

Till then a quick recap. Bollywood is anything but a soft target. And there is absolutely no justification in Bollywood playing the martyr role or pulling out the victim card at this juncture. Sorry, boss. Bollywood is Bollywood - a unique place, often called a Dream Factory. Bollywood does not manufacture toothpaste or biscuits. It manufactures fantasies. We love those fantasies. Which is why Bollywood remains as yummily successful as it is. Like in any other industry, there are amazing people in Bollywood, and some not-so-amazing. But, come on - do you care to know the amazing and not amazing folks in, say, a multinational company like Colgate? So, all that goody-goody talk and complaints about 'slander' is most misplaced. It's absurd to project Bollywood personalities as 'scapegoats' or 'sitting ducks'. Of course people in Bollywood do drugs, drink themselves silly, fool around, perhaps far more than regular working class people. Makes perfect sense - Bollywood thrives on glamour and projection, illusion and make believe. That's what makes Bollywood so seductive and magnetic. Fans feed off every little nugget emerging from Bollywood's maws. Particularly stories about wild parties, cocaine consumption, binge-boozing and crazy hook-ups. Which ordinary person can afford such indulgences even if the desire exists and the person wants to go ahead and snort?

We love Bollywood because it is Bollywood - frenetic, lunatic, creative, inventive, over-the-top and delirious. Excess is what keeps showbiz going. Movie stars lead lives that cannot be equated or compared to the lives of other successful professionals. The unspoken reality in urban India is that drugs are everywhere and everybody is smoking up - bankers, lawyers, doctors, corporate honchos, sports stars, assorted socialites, artists, fashion folks, chefs - those who can afford the stuff, do the stuff! But who cares about some suit doing lines in the loo during a key board meeting?

The clean-up drive is a waste of time. It's far better to be upfront and deal with Bollywood the way it is, without dousing heavy-duty sanitizer on all its colourful denizens. Or white-washing and spray-painting the grime. There are saints and there are sinners - they coexist in shanti. Bollywood is not Juhu beach which can be cleaned up thanks to the efforts of a few. Bollywood was and remains a badass monster.

Till then, lie low, actor log - and keep your nostrils clean!

Virender Sehwag expects this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) to be "extra special" and a major reason for that is Mahendra Singh Dhoni getting back on the pitch after announcing his international retirement following a year-long sabbatical from the game. (More Cricket News)

The IPL will get underway from September 19 in the UAE, moved out of India due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think this tournament will be extra special for everyone – the players as well as the audience...watching Dhoni back on the pitch is sure to be a delight. There's so much in store, need I say more?" Sehwag, who will be co-hosting a show 'Power Play with Champions' on Flipkart Video, said.

Dhoni, who surprised everyone with his decision to call it quits from international cricket in mid-August, will be back in action when he leads the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

CSK will take on defending champions Mumbai Indians in the lung-opener of the league in Abu Dhabi on September 19.

Sehwag said cricket is an integral part of an Indian's life and the fans have waited long for the sport to return.

"I've spent a lot of my time during the lockdown watching old matches, analyzing them, including my own innings. Cricket forms an important part of our DNA as Indians and we've waited with bated breath for it to return" he said.

The Asus ROG Phone 3 is a giant in both the form factor and in its performance. So while the former will put off buyers looking for a regular flagship, it's the latter that means a lot more to hardcore gamers.

Asus ROG Phone 3 detailed review

The ROG Phone 3 is the third iteration of Asus’ gaming smartphone, a niche it has meticulously carved (along with a handful of others, of course) to serve a growing community of smartphone enthusiasts and gamers. Primarily gamers. Lending the ROG brand to the device certainly infuses confidence considering the prowess it holds in the PC segment for gaming machines. And amidst a host of well-tuned flagships quite capable of delivering excellent gaming performance, the ROG Phone 3 deviously includes these minor, but significant features that make this the weapon of choice for anyone even remotely considering smartphone gaming as a career option.

The ROG Phone 3 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, the same flagship SoC found in the OnePlus 8 Pro, but speed-binned to make the Kryo 585 prime core to run at 3.1GHz instead of 2.8GHz. The Snapdragon 865+ also has the same Adreno 650 GPU, but tuned to run 10 per cent faster. At the top edge of smartphone computing, these numbers may not mean much for the average joe, but for a gamer, these are certainly some things to boast about.

But that’s not where the feature-list ends, and it’s important to list them out before even starting the review because it’s ultimately these features that sets this smartphone apart. These are the Air Triggers, and a 144Hz AMOLED display with 270Hz touch sampling and 25ms touch latency. Any PC gamer will tell you having the fastest CPU and GPU are only a part of the whole setup. The display and peripherals are equally important. That’s exactly what the ROG Phone 3 proves when it comes to smartphone gaming as well.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Benchmark Analysis

With the internals onboard, the Asus ROG Phone 3 is clearly the most powerful smartphone you can buy right now. Our unit was running on the Snapdragon 865+ along with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS 3.0 storage and managed to beat all other Android devices launched this year on benchmarks, by a good margin. There’s also a variant with 16GB RAM which we presume will post even higher scores on benchmarks.

The ROG Phone 3 also has a software tweak that unleashes higher compute power from the Snapdragon 865+, called the X Mode. It’s a performance-enhancing mode which gets triggered when you launch games to eke out better performance. Turning the X Mode on during benchmarks also gave higher scores. And the difference is quite significant.

    Asus ROG Phone 3 Gaming

Everything about the ROG Phone 3’s design is off-putting for using as a daily driver. It weighs like a brick and looks gigantic in front of its contemporaries, but it's right when you start to play a game that every little decision taken about the ROG Phone 3 start to make sense. Asus offers what is perhaps the most personalised gaming experience on a smartphone, and it achieves so using a four-pronged approach —

    1. The weight and dimensions add to a vice-like grip when held in landscape orientation for gaming. There is an additional USB-C port on the side to charge while gaming, and front-facing speakers that are perhaps the loudest you will ever come across on a smartphone. And then there are the AirTriggers.

    2. The AirTriggers are not new to the ROG Phone lineup, but this time they have mutated. You can now map up to four functions on the two shoulder buttons, and even bind a function to motion control. Using the whole suite of abilities takes time to get used to, but once you do it leaves you a lot more space for your thumbs to shoot and aim. The AirTriggers are also instantly responsive, but my only gripe is you can’t control the haptic intensity of them, which is a little too intensive.

    3. The 6.59-inch AMOLED display is the most impactful, however. It’s not as much the 144Hz refresh rate that gives you the edge, but the fast response times that make this the best gaming smartphone to use in competitive scenarios. The ROG Phone 3 boasts of 270Hz touch sampling and 25ms touch latency and using the touchscreen while gaming is a clear advantage, provided you learn to wield it to perfection. Like the AirTriggers, the touch sensitivity is way too high at default settings. For Call of Duty: Mobile, I had to dial down the touch and slide sensitivities from the Armoury crate to get this sensitive-being under control.

    4. The Armoury Crate is the most unique weapon in this phone’s arsenal. It’s an app where games installed are garaged, giving you stats and recordings, and a place to tune the performance to death, for every individual games. It’s also a place that’d be instantly familiar to ROG PC and laptop users, showing the CPU, GPU, temperature values. Here, you can tune every aspect of the gaming performance — CPU and GPU core frequencies, thermal thresholds, scheduler, governor and more. These settings can be saved as presets and can now be shared with fellow ROG Phone 3 users.

All four aspects combined, what you get is comprehensively the most spectacular gaming performance from the ROG Phone 3. It’s not as much the hardware inside that gives it an edge, but more of what is outside, the things you touch and feel on the smartphone - like the display, the trigger buttons and the unique design elements, which offer an edge over others.

Ironically though, the ROG Phone 3 simply refused to be benchmarked by the GameBench application which we use to record frame rates data in real-time. That’s likely because the X Mode was killing background processes to focus solely on the game I was playing. However, we relied on the in-game metrics display to gauge the frame rates games delivered, and most of the popular games like Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Real Racing 3, Infinity Ops and the likes hit peak framerates with no perceivable drop in frames.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Sustained Performance

The thermals, however, were a little on the higher side. Little is an understatement. The phone managed to go up to 82 degrees while running AnTuTu with X Mode On, becoming nearly untouchable. And it took some 30 seconds for the phone to return to temperatures below 50 degrees. It’s not surprising that Asus has locked the Level 3 X Mode until the AeroActive Cooler accessory is attached to the phone. This phone heats up like crazy. The area right below the camera module got unbearably hot after a Battle Royale match on PUBG Mobile. Yet, this does not seem to impact performance, much.

The ROG Phone 3 throttled to only 89% of its max performance after 45 minutes of running the CPU Throttle Test. In the same test, the OnePlus 8 Pro throttled to 75% of its max performance. It means the heat dissipation system in the ROG Phone 3 works to keep the machine running even with all the heat generated. And the surface temperature can be kept in check with the AeroActive Cooler accessory.

    Asus ROG Phone 3 Software

When setting up, the ROG Phone 3 offers two UI options — Asus’ gaming-flavoured Apex theme or the classic stock Android theme. The underlying interface is essentially stock Android with nearly no additional third-party apps. And within this stock framework, Asus has incorporated the Armoury Crate where I spent the most time. It’s a fascinating piece of work and we have already spoken of the things you can do with it. Outside of it, the ROG Phone 3 is like using any other stock Android smartphones, with swift transitions, the Google Discover feed on the home screen, and the overall lightweight, no-frills feel of vanilla Android.

There are a few bugs like background apps crashing, and the occassional stutter and aim reset in games, but over the week I was using the phone, there were already two updates issued fixing some of the issues that were there. The ROG Phone II took its own sweet time to get the update to Android 10, but going by the pace by which Asus is fixing bugs on the ROG Phone 3, things are looking up.

    Asus ROG Phone 3 Camera

The ROG Phone 3 is a smartphone meant for gaming, but Asus did spend good resources on the camera setup, even though it’s clear this wasn’t high priority. There’s a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, the one that’s present on the Poco X2 on the primary camera with f/1.8 lens, another 13MP ultrawide lens and a 5MP macro lens. On the front is a single 24MP selfie shooter housed in a thin, bezel.

During the day, the camera is decent enough. The 64MP primary camera took some good shots during sunset, but the dynamic range and the vibrance are noticeably lacking when compared against the OnePlus 8 Pro. At night too, the images are not too bright even when shot using the night mode, and frankly, you can get far better images from other flagships available in this price range.

Honestly, we haven’t taken too many samples as of now, because Asus warned us of impending updates improving camera performance. So we will revisit this section in a few weeks for a more comprehensive opinion.

    Asus ROG Phone 3 Battery

Part of what made me use the ROG Phone II as my daily driver was the insane battery life I used to get from the phone when I was out covering launch events and shooting. The phone, when not used up for gaming, lasted well over a day. With the same 6,000mAh battery, the ROG Phone 3 is no different. Even at 144Hz refresh rate, the ROG Phone 3 lasted well over 29 hours on a single charge. And this was with my endless benchmark runs, gaming and binging Top Gear episodes. For a better idea, playing 15 minutes of Call of Duty: Mobile dropped battery by 4 per cent, while 30 minutes of watching Indian Matchmaking (that’s enough for the eyes and mind) dropped charge by 5 per cent.

    Asus ROG Phone 3 Design

The ROG Phone 3, when used as a daily driver, feels bulky and unusable because of the form factor, especially when you get comfortable using the tall and slim phones. But the ROG Phone 3 is also not meant for those users. As we said before, every little thing about the smartphone feels logical when you hold it in the gaming grip.

Having said that, Asus has toned down the aesthetics on the ROG Phone 3 as compared to the predecessor. It’s still roughly the same size and weight (kept to ensure backwards compatibility with the new accessories) but the gaming aesthetics are more muted. The RGB-lit ROG logo at the back is just as prominent, though. I’d have liked a few more LED light strips on the body, but this one is enough to say I mean business.

What is disappointing is the 3.5mm headphone jack is gone. What you get instead is a USB-C dongle to connect wired earphones and the only reason to go through this hassle is that the ROG Phone 3 also supports hi-res audio.

    Asus ROGP Phone 3 Display

The 6.59-inch panel is the centre of attention on the ROG Phone 3. It doesn’t have the modern punch-hole design and instead comes with thin, but significant bezels on the top and bottom. The old-school form factor helps with the grip, preventing the palms from inducing accidental touches. And the 144Hz refresh rate is by far the fastest on a smartphone display, but it’s not immediately distinguishable from the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 120Hz panel. On the other hand, as mentioned before, the fast touch sampling rate and low touch latency make this the most responsive panel I’ve used before. Typing, swiping and scrolling on this is monstrously fast.

The large screen is also quite good for streaming movies and shows, thanks to its HDR support for the major streaming platforms. However, it’s not as bright as the OnePlus 8 Pro, or even the ROG Phone II, which breached the 1000 nits mark in our lab, which is quite disappointing.

    Bottomline

I think by now we have comprehensively demonstrated what this smartphone is capable of when it comes to gaming. Every element of the smartphone has been decided with gaming in mind. An insanely responsive display, cutting-edge hardware, AirTriggers, and loud audio, offers an unfair advantage against other players using vanilla smartphones. It’s not that you will get better frame rates from the popular games from this phone, but aiming, shooting and moving is the most responsive on the ROG Phone 3.

So, even with all the horsepower inside, you can’t race the ROG Phone 3 on the Autobahn; because the Android gaming ecosystem only offers a two-lane highway to drive this beast. Despite the raw power, the eventual experience offered by the ROG Phone 3 is the same as any other Android flagship of 2020. We hear that it’s also Google Stadia ready, but until the service improves or launches (or both) for mass usage, the ROG Phone 3 may just feel a bit too overkill, but for good reason.

India should take the lead on vaccine delivery: Bloomberg

India should take the lead on vaccine delivery: Bloomberg

    September 16, 2020, 1:05 pm IST Foreign Media | World | TOI
    By Mihir Sharma

The pressures of the pandemic have fallen hardest on developing countries with weak governments. They’re struggling to determine who is being infected and why, and to mitigate the economic impact of lockdowns and social distancing measures. If dealing with Covid-19 is stressing those states, however, the effort required to end the pandemic may exhaust them.

Speaking to the Financial Times this week, the Indian vaccine manufacturer Adar Poonawalla — whose Serum Institute of India plans to produce a billion doses of an eventual vaccine, far in excess of any of its competitors — warned that vaccinating “everyone on this planet” poses an enormous governance challenge. He says there’s no “proper plan on paper” for distributing any successful vaccine; Serum may well provide 500 million doses to an Indian government that has no way to get them to people. And India’s infant immunization program has at least given the country some distribution capacity. The problem is worse elsewhere.

One critical challenge will be storage and transportation. Some of the vaccines that use the new messenger RNA technology will need to be stored at subzero temperatures, as low as minus-70 or minus-80 degrees Celsius. The vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca PLC, which the Serum Institute has licensed, can reportedly be stored in standard refrigerated environments. But even managing a regular vaccine cold chain is enormously difficult.

To anyone with experience of developing-world public health infrastructure, the World Health Organization’s recommendations for managing vaccine transport make for depressing reading. The vaccine alliance GAVI’s briefing on the first-choice storage machinery — ice-lined refrigerators — is equally sobering. Each can cost thousands of dollars. Off-grid, solar-driven refrigerators, which might be needed in countries with unreliable power supply, are even more expensive.

In the developed world, big investments are already being made in scaling up cold-chain infrastructure: UPS, for example, is putting millions of dollars into new “freezer farms” near air hubs in the U.S. and western Europe. Companies are unlikely to make similar investments on spec in the developing world, however. Even countries such as India, which have had some experience and success with “mission” projects in healthcare, might struggle at the expense involved in creating single-use transportation and storage infrastructure, at scale, on short notice.

This is where the economic policy community needs to step in. Getting hundreds of millions of vaccine doses out to the poorest and most remote parts of the globe is in everyone’s interest; in the words of Merck and Co. Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Frazier, “none of us are safe until all of us are safe.” Solutions exist if governments, multilateral agencies, and private capital are willing to explore them.

In India, for example, the government could collaborate with private capital and multilateral lenders to set up a holding company focused on developing, distributing and installing dual-use cold chain infrastructure. India’s National Centre for Cold-Chain Development — yes, it has one — has long argued that there are “synergies” between agricultural, processed-food, and medical cold-chain infrastructure.

Done right, a large network of refrigerated storage and transport created for the pandemic could have wider uses. An efficient cold chain would help permanently raise farmers’ access to markets, reduce wastage and control food inflation.

Of course, this will require ministries to talk to one another, arrange de-risking mechanisms and guarantees, and then rope in possible investors. The effort will be worth it, though: If a mechanism can be evolved in India, other developing countries should be able to replicate it. Without one, it’s hard to see how those nations will escape the pandemic even with a vaccine.

Pandemic Cuts Marine Refuel Demand, Driving Consolidation Among Bunker Suppliers - IBIA

Global demand for marine fuels is expected to fall by up to 17% due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on world trade, setting the stage for more consolidation among bunker suppliers, an industry executive told a conference on Wednesday.

      • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:36 PM IST

SINGAPORE: Global demand for marine fuels is expected to fall by up to 17% due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on world trade, setting the stage for more consolidation among bunker suppliers, an industry executive told a conference on Wednesday.

Banks scaled back on their commodities trade finance after the coronavirus crisis led to defaults by some trading houses and exposed a series of frauds, leaving small and medium sized firms most exposed.

Unni Einemo, director of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), said firms were contending with low demand, low margins, ample supplies, increased counter-party risk, and constrained access to capital.

“Because of that we might expect further consolidation through mergers and acquisitions or attrition,” Einemo told the virtual Platts APPEC 2020 conference, adding that some firms could be forced to quit the market.

“Global bunker demand is expected to decrease significantly in 2020, even if it had held up quite well (in April and May),” Einemo said.

IBIA’s members forecast a 7%-17% drop in bunker fuel demand globally in 2020, she said.

Global marine fuel demand is estimated at about 300 million tonnes per annum, or about 5.2 million barrels per day (mbpd).

In its latest report released on Tuesday, the International Energy Agency said “fuel oil demand, which includes marine bunker as well as power generation and industrial uses, is forecast to decline by only 0.4 mbpd, or 6.3% in 2020,” the IEA said in its monthly report on Tuesday.

Most bunkering markets saw a big drop in June, with some seeing a “staggering” 30%-40% year-on-year contraction, although Singapore has to be among the least affected markets, said Einemo.

Singapore, by far the world’s top bunkering hub, saw year-on-year growth in marine fuel sales every month this year with the exception of May and June which contracted by just 2% each, official data showed.

Singapore’s resilience has a lot to do with it “having the widest variety of fuels on offer (and) it has become a preferred port because buyers are confident they are going to get the quality and quantity they are buying,” said Einemo.

But in other hubs like in the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah, bunkering demand plummeted as the spreading coronavirus slowed shipping activity.

India on Tuesday described Pakistan as an epicenter of terrorism and said no one deserves unsolicited lecture on human rights from Islamabad that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities including Hindus, Sikhs and Christians. Exercising the Right of Reply to the statements made by Pakistan at the 45th session of Human Rights Council (HRC) here, the Indian representative said that it has become habitual for Pakistan to malign India with false and fabricated narratives for its self-serving malicious purposes.

"Neither India nor others deserve this unsolicited lecture on human rights from a country that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities, is an epicenter of terrorism, has the distinction of providing pensions to individuals on UN Sanctions list and has a Prime Minister who proudly admits training tens of thousands of terrorists to fight in Jammu and Kashmir," the Indian diplomat said.

The diplomat said that it was not surprising that other relevant multilateral institutions have been raising serious concerns on Pakistan's failure to stop terror financing and lack of effective actions against all terror entities in Pakistan. Highlighting the nefarious designs of Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the diplomat said, "the mass influx of outsiders has whittled down the number of Kashmiris to an insignificant number in Pakistan occupied parts of Indian Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh. "In its zeal to reassert its theocratic ideology, it has ensured that ethnic and religious minorities have no future through systematic persecution, blasphemy laws, forced conversions, targeted killings, sectarian violence and faith-based discrimination," the diplomat said.

"Thousands of Sikh, Hindus and Christian minority women and girls have been subjected to abductions, forced marriages and conversions in Pakistan." On the plight of people in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, the Indian diplomat said, "Not a single day has gone by when a family in Balochistan doesn't find its members picked up or kidnapped by the security forces of Pakistan. "Pakistan does well when it comes to intimidation and attacks against journalists, human rights defenders and political dissidents in particular by its state machinery. It is not without a reason that Pakistan has been highlighted by international organizations as a country where journalists are slain and their killers go scot free, the diplomat said.

India also slammed Pakistan for abusing various HRC mechanisms and platforms for raising issues, which are extraneous to the mandate of the HRC and which relate to internal affairs of India, with a view to distract the attention of the international community from serious human rights violations committed by it against its own people, including in Indian territories occupied by it. India also rejected the reference made by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. "The OIC has no locus standi to comment on internal affairs of India. The OIC has allowed itself to be misused by Pakistan to subverse its own Agenda. It's for the members of the OIC to decide if it is in their interests to allow Pakistan to do so, the Indian representative said.

India also advised Turkey to refrain from commenting on its internal affairs and develop a better understanding of the democratic practices.

Shopper issues warning after her $6 Kmart candle 'exploded' and left hot wax all over her table - and she's not the only one

      • A shopper, from Perth, has claimed her $6 scented candle from Kmart 'exploded'
      • The woman was stunned to find the remnants of the candle after jar cracked
      • She wanted to issue a warning so other shoppers can be 'careful' with the candle

A shopper has issued a warning after claiming her $6 scented candle from Kmart spontaneously 'exploded', leaving hot wax all over her table.

The woman, from Perth, was stunned to find the remnants of the green pear honey suckle and neroli candle, with broken glasses after the hot jar cracked into pieces.

'Just a warning to be careful if you are a Kmart candle lover! Exploded and leaked candle wax all over side table,' she wrote in a Facebook group.

'Lucky no one was close. Let off a good crack.'

The candle in question is no longer in stock online.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Kmart for comment.

Dozens of people claimed they had a similar experience with their budget candles, while others described the incident as 'dangerous' and 'scary'.

'This happened to me once and I haven't brought candles from Kmart since,' one man claimed, while another said: 'I had this happen with this candle too.'

Many quickly pointed out an overlong wick or not enough wax can cause the candle's glass surround to shatter.

'I had this happen with this candle [from Kmart] too. I didn't have a lot of wax left in it though so I assumed it was because of that... I was silly,' one woman admitted.

A second woman said: 'If there's not much wax left in them the glass, it gets too hot and will explode.'

A third woman added: 'There's many factors to how this can happen. Wick size is a big issue in the Kmart candles. We should be trimming wick when necessary to avoid the flame being so huge. This makes it less hot and less likely to shatter the glass.'

And another shopper said: 'This can happen if you burn past a certain point, on most labels it will give you a warning not to burn past a certain amount.'

Others defended the retailer, saying Kmart should not be blamed as other expensive brands are also prone to overheating and exploding.

In 2016, a shopper claimed he suffered serious burns to his hands after he tried to stop a $6 candle from Kmart from setting his home on fire after the glass 'exploded' in his bedroom

In 2016, a shopper claimed he suffered serious burns to his hands after he tried to stop a $6 candle from Kmart from setting his home on fire after the glass 'exploded' in his bedroom

'I've had this happen with another branded candle and the response from the company was that once it gets to a certain point at the bottom to no longer burn as the wax is no longer able to keep the glass cool while lit,' one woman said.

'Stupid I know, best believe I've not bought one since.'

And a second woman said: 'I have had this happen with a candle from another brand. It can happen with any of them.'

In another post on social media this week, one shopper claimed her 75 cent scented candle from Kmart left a 'petrol' smell.

'I brought the salted caramel candle today and lit it up for an hour. It smelt amazing but I had to leave so I blew it out. When I came home my house smelt really badly of petrol,' she claimed.

In October 2016, a shopper claimed he suffered serious burns to his hands after he tried to stop a $6 candle from Kmart from setting his Gold Coast home on fire after the glass 'exploded' in his bedroom.

The man told Daily Mail Australia at the time there was and a 'huge, uncontrollable flame' that almost touched the ceiling coming from what was left of the candle.

'While trying to avoid burning the house down I tried to blow the candle out but to no avail and had no option but to pick it and run to remove it from danger,' he said.

However, he dropped candle as it burned his hands, leaving wax and glass all over a hallway while his wife rushed him to hospital.

'We test our candles, list safety instructions and when adhered to the product is safe to use,' a Kmart Australia spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia in 2016.

'We encourage all those who own a candle to review these instructions as a safety precaution.'

      Verdict

The Asus Zenfone 3s Max is a battery-centric smartphone, and it does last long. However, at Rs. 14,999, the compromises make little sense. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 offers just an hour or lesser battery life and gives you a better camera and performance. If you can afford to spend more, the Lenovo P2 offers almost 40% more battery life than this smartphone.

Asus Zenfone 3s Max detailed review

Battery and Android updates, these are two very common problems with Android smartphones today. Think back to the long list of smartphones online, Google launched Android Nougat months ago, but there are a handful devices on the new version, at best.

It is that problem that Asus is addressing with its newest device. The Asus Zenfone 3s Max has a 5000 mAh battery and comes with Android Nougat out-of-the-box. So, when we review the Zenfone 3s Max, these are amongst its biggest plus points. However, that isn’t all you need in a smartphone now, is it? The Zenfone 3s Max hasn't been launched in India, so we can't quite tell you whether to buy it or not. As a standalone device, though, it is open for analysis. Here's ours, with tests done over the past two weeks.

      Battery

Beginning with the part Asus puts on its marketing material, the phone has a huge battery inside and is designed to last long. And so it does, with an excellent PC Mark battery score of over 14 hours. The Zenfone 3s Max is also above average in terms of idle battery drop, which is important for a phone that has to last long.

In general, such benchmark results would amount to at least two days of real world usage. However, it doesn’t quite translate that way. When using the Zenfone 3s Max, battery life is only about a full 24 hours. That’s about a full work day and then 12 more hours.

Gaming on the device takes up about 4% battery in 15 mins and about 10% in an hour. In theory, you can get about 10 hours of gaming from this device with the display turned to 100%.

Similarly, idle battery drop is about 2% every 12 odd hours. This is amongst the highest on the market today. It can also reverse charge other devices.

The phone has five power saver modes and is set to Normal by default. You can turn it to Performance Mode to get maximum performance, but it doesn’t make a big different in regular terms. The battery life differs by about an hour at best. Numbers given above are all on Normal mode.

It is clear that the Zenfone 3s Max’s battery life is better than most other smartphones. It is, however, worth mentioning that the Lenovo P2 does much better on regular usage and on benchmarks.

      Operating System and ZenUI

As mentioned above, the Zenfone 3s Max runs on Android Nougat, layered with a new version of Asus’ ZenUI. It looks the same aesthetically and is just as frustrating as it has ever been.

Asus has added a Spotlight search like feature this time, which often interferes with the notification drop down. The former is accessed by swiping down anywhere on the screen, while the latter appears when you swipe down from the top. As a result, the search comes up often when you’re going for the Notifications drop down.

Moreover, ZenUI is just as bloated as ever. Asus’ Mobile Manager keeps scanning apps I don’t want it to and keeps sending notifications that I haven’t asked for. In fact, ZenUI’s myriad apps and background functions may be the primary reason for the Zenfone 3s Max having lower battery life than the Lenovo P2.

After the first boot, apps like Mini Movie, Mobile Manager etc. will overwhelm you with all the notifications they generate. We tried disabling every last one of them (most can’t be uninstalled) and it doesn’t affect usability at all, except making more resources available to the user. Asus needs to make its UI more stock like, as Lenovo has done.

      Performance

Now, we do appreciate having Android Nougat out-of-the-box, Asus’ choice of a MediaTek SoC is confusing. For one, it would have been easier to tailor the OS to a Snapdragon SoC. Secondly, the Snapdragon 625 is much more efficient for a battery-focused smartphone.

The Zenfone 3s Max runs on the MediaTek MT6750T octa-core SoC and 3GB of RAM and its performance is not the best. Benchmarks aside, the phone shows sloth often. For example, the fingerprint sensor on the front is slow to react. Similarly, apps take longer than usual to load. Especially heavier apps like gaming.

      AnTuTu 6.0

      Geekbench 4 Single Core

      Geekbench 4 Multi Core

      3D Mark Unlimited

In particular, Amazing Spiderman 2 froze often and even crashed twice. This could be a result of memory overload or a faulty UI. Even Asphalt 8 stuttered at times and overall frame rates dropped after about 20 minutes of gaming.

The overall performance, though functional, is far from ideal, especially considering the Zenfone 3s Max’s competition.

      Display

In order to improve battery life, Asus has chose HD resolution for the display. However, given the phone’s performance and overall battery life, this doesn’t make sense to me. Lenovo achieved much more without compromising on such specs.

720p doesn’t make for low pixel density on a 5.2 inch panel. 282 ppi is easy enough to get onboard with, but colours on the Zenfone 3s Max are calibrated differently this time. Colour tones are a tad warmer than other Zenfones, though black levels aren't very good.

Overall, the display works for regular usage. Touch response is fine and 2.5D glass adds a premium touch.

      Camera

The Zenfone 3s Max has a 13MP camera on the back and 8MP camera on the front. Image quality wise, the camera isn’t up to the mark. Low light images lack details often and colours are desaturated too, despite Asus’ algorithms trying to make photos brighter. However, photos taken in natural light, or even indoors, are passable and will easily work for sharing on social media. The Zenfone 3s Max takes sharp enough photos, with reasonably true to source colours in this case.

Asus Zenfone 3s Max Camera Samples

Overall, the Zenfone 3s Max’s camera is decent, but it doesn’t make for the best you can buy. With the right pricing, this camera may be acceptable, but phones like the Honor 6x etc. can easily do much better.

      Build and Design

The 3s Max also has a new design compared to other Zenfones. The phone has a square camera module on the to left side of the back panel. The fingerprint sensor is webbed into the home button on the front, and it has a more rounded design.

Asus concentric circles design is missing, except for the power button. The edges are rounded, with the antenna bands on the top edge of the device. In pictures, the phone can look like an iPhone, however, it doesn’t really feel the same.

The mono speaker grilles are on the bottom, with the micro-USB port between them and the phone has on-screen buttons.

      Audio Quality

Asus says the speakers on this device are supplied by AAC, the same company responsible for Apple’s iPhone 7 (review) speaker. The audio is loud enough, but not very high quality. You’ll get by with headphone, but much like most other smartphones, it isn’t meant for listening to music without them. It has a mono speaker with one grille just for show.

      Bottomline

From this, we're certain that the Asus Zenfone 3s Max is a decent smartphone. However, without the pricing, we cannot yet surmise whether it will be worth buying or not. It battery life is substantially lower than the Lenovo P2 (review) and other aspects pale in comparison to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (review), Honor 6X (review) or Coolpad Cool 1 (review). On its own, the Zenfone 3s Max seems to be a device suited for a budget pricing, however, at Rs. 14,999, we have to recommend the other devices mentioned here over this one. The compromises made by Asus make little sense to us given the competition it is facing in the market.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge plus detailed review

They say that to be the best you need to ape the best. For years, Samsung has blatantly copied features that have defined the iPhone and tried to improve upon them, and yet managed to miss the mark with its sub par build quality, childish TouchWiz icons and lacklustre overall appeal. Over the years, Samsung’s Galaxy S series have defined themselves as the go to devices for a flagship Android experience. In the past two years, Samsung has worked at adding another element to its flagship line-up – style and that is what the S6 Edge Plus is. It’s a style statement, a statement that says I am the best there is and what I do is better than the rest. Samsung doesn’t need to ape the best anymore. But is it the best?

      Build and design

Samsung’s flagship devices were notorious for being plasticky and Samsung changed that with the Galaxy S6. And there was no going back. Coming to the phone in question, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the device has a design very reminiscent of its sibling, the Galaxy S6 Edge with the biggest difference being that the smartphone has a larger display, which is curved on both the sides. There is a larger battery and more RAM as well, but that’s all under the hood. This gives edge-to-edge design a whole new meaning and feeling when holding it.

Hold the device for the first time and you will feel odd, very odd. Usually smartphones have a flat display and a curved back. This adds to the ergonomic design of a phone making it comfortable to hold and more importantly making it easy to lift off a table. Here however, the roles have been reversed. The display of the smartphone feels curved because of; you guessed it, the curved edges. And the rather stiff flat back of the Edge Plus makes it uncomfortable to hold and use at first. Even a simple task like picking up the smartphone from a table feels different because the back is so flat and the curved glass is so slippery that you will have to make an effort to pick it up.

Coming to the back, the metal body is overlaid with glass and from the minute you touch it, it is a fingerprint magnet. The rear also houses the camera and that’s about it, clean and elegant. The camera protrudes slightly but that’s ok. The bottom of the smartphone has the headphones jack accompanied by the speaker and the microUSB port. The top has the nano SIM card slot and the right has the power button. The volume rocker rests on the left and considering the small footprint of the borders of the smartphone, the buttons though small are easy to find without looking.

Last but not least, we have the front of the smartphone. Sure, here we have the curved display, but below that rests the one physical button which is a fingerprint sensor as well. On either side of the fingerprint scanner we have the multitasking and the back button.

Overall the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus has a beautiful design that will definitely turn heads but at the cost of ergonomics.

      Display

Boy-o-boy is it beautiful. The 5.7-inch display has a 2K resolution. Yes, for a smartphone a 2K resolution is overkill, but the Super AMOLED display looks stunning. I am currently using a OnePlus One and an iPhone 6 and I can’t go back to those phones. Watching videos, be it YouTube or locally stored videos on the device is a treat. Despite the fact that you can tell the difference between a low resolution and high-resolution video, the low-resolution videos still looked good. And by low-resolution videos, I mean 720p videos. Even pictures that you click from the device or the ones that you view online look awesome. The colours just pop.

The only downside here is that the edges are more of a distraction than an addition when watching videos. It’s distracting to see the black bars on videos curve around the display and even more distracting to see the video curve around the display running in full screen.

      UI

I haven’t used a Samsung smartphone as my daily driver for a long time so coming back to TouchWiz was like meeting a childhood friend after a while, it's still familiar but all grown up. Everything though familiar is a little different. It’s matured. Swipe right on the display and you will see Flipboard integrated that will give you a newsfeed. On a Nexus phone, this is where you’d find Google Now. Sure, Flipboard adds freezes your phone for a second, but it's still something many of us use and find useful.

Coming to the rest of the UI, its what you’ve seen on the Galaxy S6 or the S6 Edge. You have the ability to run two apps simultaneously, use the phone in ‘single hand’ mode and more. If you are one that’s used a Samsung phone before, you will feel right at home.

      I am the edge

Coming to the curves there is no practical use for it. Not yet anyways. Sure, you can see your notifications pop up on the curve or you can simply swipe the right side of the display to bring up your favourite contacts and apps but I can do this by simply installing a third party app on any Android phone. Just like Samsung’s Note devices took a while to define the utility of the S-Pen, we think it will be quite a while before we can justify the utility of the curved display. Yes, swiping to go back is a lot “cooler” and smoother thanks to the curved display but again, that isn’t a justification.

      Beauty and a beast?

Coming to the performance, the smartphone is a beast. In our benchmark tests, the device performed top notch pushing every benchmark to its limit. As an everyday smartphone, the device works quite well too. The call quality is crisp, typing is a breeze, and multitasking is splendid. Its what you get when you are using a device with state of the art hardware. The hardware powering the S6 Edge Plus is the same that is powering the S6 Edge with the difference being the larger screen size on the Edge Plus and 4GB DDR4 RAM (the S6 Edge has 3GB RAM). The EdgePlus also houses a bigger battery.

Samsung galaxy S6 Edge Plus benchmarks | Create infographics

Moving on to the battery life of the smartphone, in our continuous video playback test the device lasted for a whopping 16 hours. We played a 1080p movie on loop keeping the brightness on full and plugging headphones into the device, keeping the volume at max as well. In the GeekBench battery test the device lasted for a little over 9 hours. Coming to everyday use, the device has enough juice to get through a day and if you aren’t a power hungry user, there is enough juice to spill over to the next day as well.

The gaming performance again is great. The smartphone ran every game I played on it. The only downside here is the location of the speaker. I would inevitably end up covering the speaker with my hand while gaming, and hence muffling the audio. The speaker on the other hand is nice – loud and crisp.

My biggest fear was that the device is so slippery, that I feared I’d drop it. And worse, since the metal body is encased in glass, I feared the glass would shatter.

      Say cheese!!

Last but not least, we have the camera. The rear has a 16MP camera that is brilliant. There are some pictures that I clicked in low light and people did not believe that it was clicked in low light. Let the image gallery speak for itself. Put simply, the camera of this smartphone is just awesome.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Camera Samples

      Bottom line

When asked, “which flagship phone I should buy?” I was one that wouldn’t recommend Samsung phones and over the years my opinion has changed, and that should be a testament to the hard work Samsung has put into making its devices great. It isn’t perfect, the curves are useless, the display is awesome, the camera is to die for and the body is fragile and a fingerprint magnet. Nonetheless, if you want a smartphone that is a beauty and a beast, then this is the one for you. It’s the Android phone that cannot only perform but will definitely turn heads wherever you use it. Trust me. I travelled in the Metro in New Delhi with this phone just to see people’s reactions.

737 Max crashes that killed 346 were 'horrific culmination' of failures by Boeing, FAA, says House report

"What’s particularly infuriating is how Boeing and FAA both gambled with public safety in the critical time period between the two crashes," said the Democratic chair of the House committee.

A U.S. House investigative report into two Boeing 737 Max crashes that killed 346 people blamed the airline and the FAA for “repeated and serious failures."

The fatal crashes in Indonesia in October 2018 and Ethiopia in March 2019 were “a horrific culmination of a series of faulty technical assumptions by Boeing’s engineers, a lack of transparency on the part of Boeing’s management, and grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA," said the report released Wednesday by the Democratic-controlled House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

The committee chairman, Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., said in a statement that the report, written by Democratic staff, shows "how Boeing — under pressure to compete with Airbus and deliver profits for Wall Street — escaped scrutiny from the FAA, withheld critical information from pilots, and ultimately put planes into service that killed 346 innocent people.”

He added, "What’s particularly infuriating is how Boeing and FAA both gambled with public safety in the critical time period between the two crashes."

A Lion Air crash in October 2018 in Indonesia that killed 189 people was followed five months later by an Ethiopian Airlines flight's going down shortly after takeoff, causing the death of all 157 people aboard.

Boeing said in a statement after the report's release that it is “dedicated to doing the work” necessary.

“We have learned many hard lessons as a company from the accidents of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, and from the mistakes we have made,” the company said. “As this report recognizes, we have made fundamental changes to our company as a result, and continue to look for ways to improve.”

The FAA said in a statement that it “looks forward to working with the Committee to implement improvements identified in its report.”

“We are already undertaking important initiatives based on what we have learned from our own internal reviews as well as independent reviews of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines accidents,” the agency said.

DeFazio said the House committee chose to release the report following its 18-month investigation to “spotlight not only on the broken safety culture at Boeing but also the gaps in the regulatory system at the FAA that allowed this fatally-flawed plane into service.”

The committee's statement said its 239-page report, with more than 70 investigative findings, reveals “repeated and serious failures” by both Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The report claims that Boeing made “extensive efforts to cut costs” due to financial pressure and refused to slow its 737 MAX production line, jeopardizing safety.

It also alleges that Boeing withheld “crucial information” from the FAA, and that the federal agency's regulation of the airline was hurt by its current oversight structure with respect to Boeing, which "creates inherent conflicts of interest.”

EU Chief Executive Says Chances For Brexit Deal Fading Every Day

Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union's chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was "very little time" left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

BRUSSELS: Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union’s chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was “very little time” left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

In her major annual policy speech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen dedicated just a few sentences to Brexit, mostly focusing on the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic as well as digital and climate investments.

“With every day that passes, the chances of a timely agreement do start to fade,” von der Leyen told the European Parliament in a “state of the (European) Union” speech styled on the ones U.S. presidents deliver.

Von der Leyen also stressed both the EU and Britain negotiated and ratified their Brexit divorce deal and warned London the agreement “cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or dis-applied”.

“This is a matter of law, trust and good faith… Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership,” she said.

Von der Leyen said the bloc would “never backtrack” on UK’s divorce deal, which took three years to negotiate, as it was protecting the delicate peace on the island of Ireland from the consequences of Brexit.

Brexit talks are now in crisis yet again as Prime Minister Boris Johnson put forward a new Internal Market Bill to the UK parliament that would undercut Britain’s EU divorce treaty.

That increased the risk of the most damaging, no-deal economic split precipitating at the end of the year when Britain’s standstill post-Brexit transition ends.

Reuters reported exclusively on Tuesday, however, that Britain had quietly offered concessions on fisheries in trade talks with the European Union last week, leaving the bloc thinking London might still be open to clinching an agreement. [nL8N2GD1LG]

      Verdict

The Google Pixel 2 is the Android phone we’d recommend to anyone who wants a compact Android phone and can afford its huge price tag. It has an excellent camera, but battery life needs some work and Google should put more into its design.

      Google Pixel 2 detailed review

Having reviewed the Google Pixel 2 XL, there’s really little I can say about the Pixel 2. Yes, the smaller variant of Google’s premiere smartphones is a phone that warrants a review for itself. The most important aspect of these devices, including its AI prowess and camera remain the same as the Pixel 2 XL, but the Pixel 2 has a one or two things that make it different.

It’s worth noting that our Pixel 2 review is intentionally brief. The entire camera section will be missing, since you can read all about it on the Google Pixel 2 XL review here. In this review we cover only the aspects that differ between the two phones.

      Build and Design

Of course, the most obvious amongst those is the fact that this phone is smaller. With a 5 inch display, the Pixel 2 is perhaps the most compact and ergonomic phone today. If you like compact phones, you’ll take to this phone right away. But that said, the Pixel 2 also has huge ugly bezels on either side. No one’s done a 5 inch 18:9 display yet, but I keep wondering whether that would have made this phone better.

While the Pixel 2 is meant to be one of 2017’s best Android phone, it certainly doesn’t qualify for that monicker in terms of design. The aluminium frame remains the same as its counterpart, but the Pixel 2’s smaller footprint also makes for a lighter smartphone. It’ll disappear in your pocket when you’re walking around.

As with the Pixel 2 XL, I wish the power button and volume rocker were more tactile, though they are easier to reach at this size.

To sum up, the Pixel 2 is without a doubt the most powerful compact phone today. But as with all Pixels so far, it brings utilitarian looks, putting functionality over beauty.

      Display

Next, the display itself makes a big difference here. You could complain about its resolution, but the fact remains that 1080p resolution works absolutely fine on a 5 inch panel. To be honest, the battery benefits from the lower resolution far outweigh the benefits of higher pixel density. This is also an AMOLED panel, so you’ll get the warmer tone that many like. Of course, Google chooses AMOLEDs to provide Daydream support, so the company has also toned down the warmer tones to some extent.

That said, I do need to discuss colours on the Pixel 2’s screen a little more. For instance, the phone doesn’t have the Pixel 2 XL’s blue tint from off angles, and there’s been no reported burn-in issues (our review unit hasn’t had any issues either). That said, the Pixel 2’s display is not what you’d call vibrant. It lacks the “pop” that many people like. It also doesn’t have the curved edges of the Pixel 2 XL and 18:9 display, which makes it less immersive.

Simply put, you’re looking at a display that works, but doesn’t jump off the page as an attractive display.

      Performance

In terms of power, the Pixel 2 is fitted with the same hardware as the bigger version. With a smaller screen and lower resolution, that amounts to higher scores on some benchmarks, especially ones counting frame rates. That said, there’s really no real difference in performance here. The Pixel 2 is fast, smooth and it’s a pleasure to use. Want a compact Android phones that’s fast too? This is your best bet.

Note: The high pitched clicking noises from the Pixel 2’s speakers, reported by some users, were not heard on our review unit. NFC was kept on throughout the review period. The issue though has been acknowledged by Google, and the company said turning off NFC is a temporary fix. An update is on the way to fix this issue.

      Battery

A smaller form factor comes with a smaller battery. However, the 2700 mAh battery on the Pixel 2 lasts me just as long as the XL version. Leaving home with 100% battery at 10am, I found myself charging the phone between 4.30 and 5 pm every day. On a daily basis, I could play Sim City BuildIt for about 4.5 hours at a time. So, while you will get by a work day with this device, you’re looking at two charges per day. Like the Pixel 2 XL, that makes for average battery life.

      Bottomline

I wasn’t particularly happy with the Pixel 2 XL, but I do like the Pixel 2. That’s partly because I’m a sucker for compact smartphones though. We must commend Google on keeping the essentials unchanged between the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (make note, Apple!).

The Pixel 2 is the Android flagship for anyone that likes compact phones. Of course, you also great the excellent camera to go with that. If I had to recommend one of the new Pixels, I’d pick this one without a doubt.
