Nissan Unveils The Z Proto - carandbike

Nissan Unveils The Z Proto

The Nissan Z Proto pays homage to 50 years of Z heritage.

expand View Photos

Nissan has unveiled the Z Proto, signaling the company's intent to launch a new generation of the legendary Z sports car. Shown at a virtual event the prototype car features a new design inside and out, as well as a V-6 twin turbocharged engine with a manual transmission. The Nissan Z Proto pays homage to 50 years of Z heritage.

Penned and developed by the design team in Japan, the Z Proto boasts of a fresh, attractive exterior design with a silhouette that looks more like the old model. It sports a bright yellow pearlescent paint – a tribute to a popular paint scheme on both the first generation Z (S30) and the 300ZX (Z32) – and a black roof.

Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said, “The Z, as a pure sports car, represents the spirit of Nissan. It's a key model in our Nissan NEXT transformation plan, and it's proof of our ability to do what others don't dare to do, from A to Z. As a Z fan myself, I'm excited to announce that the next Z is coming."

The shape of the hood and the canted, teardrop-shaped LED headlights are both unmistakable reminders of the original Z. The rectangular grille's dimensions are similar to the current model with the addition of oval grille fins to offer an updated modern look. The form continues to exude both sportiness and elegance.

The rear takes inspiration from the 300ZX (Z32) taillights, reinterpreted for the modern world.

The link to the original Z is most striking when viewing the Z Proto from the side. The roofline flows from the nose to the squared-off rear to create a distinctive first-generation Z profile whose rear edge was slightly lower than the front fender height giving the Z its unique posture. The signature transition from the rear quarter glass to the low-slung position of the rear tail adds to the effect.

The rear takes inspiration from the 300ZX (Z32) taillights, reinterpreted for the modern world. Set within a rectangular black section that runs across the rear and wraps around the outer edges, the LED taillights convey a sharp glow. Lightweight carbon fibre treatments on the side skirts, front lower lip and rear valance are all there to enhance performance and the 19-inch alloy wheels and dual exhausts complete the Z Proto's looks.

The interior design team sought advice from professional motorsports legends to give the Z Proto an ideal sports car cabin, both for road and track. This can be seen in the Z's instrumentation. All vital information is found in the 12.3-inch digital meter display and arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, such as the redline shift point at the twelve o-clock position.

The new, deep dish steering wheel offers the driver quick access controls without losing its vintage aesthetic. Yellow accents are found throughout the cabin, including stitching on the instrument panel. The seats feature special yellow accenting and a layered gradation stripe in the centre of the seats to create depth.

The family of a teenager found dead 11 days after going missing nearly three years ago said "vital questions" about her death remain unanswered.
Gaia Pope, 19, was found near the Dorset coastal path in November 2017.
At a pre-inquest review hearing Ms Pope's family asked to delay the full inquest into her death due to "significant gaps in the evidence".
Coroner Rachael Griffin granted the request. The inquest, previously set for January, has been put back to May.
Ms Pope's family said: "Vital questions about Gaia's death - and the adequacy of local support services - remain unanswered."

Speaking after the hearing at Bournemouth Coroner's Court on Tuesday, Ms Pope's cousin Marienna Pope-Weidemann thanked the coroner for granting the delay.
"We know that there are significant gaps in the evidence," she said.
"The one thing we want more than for this to be over is for this to be effective and prevent future harm.
"We are not satisfied that those criteria have been met at this time. Gaia deserves a full and fearless inquest."
Ms Pope's twin sister, Maya Pope-Sutherland, said: "We have waited such a long time for answers.
"We are here to speak for her, to stand for her - I want to thank Gaia for giving me the strength to do this, I'm sorry that we lost her along the way."
Her family believe she died due to failings by police and mental health services following an allegation of rape.
At the pre-inquest hearing, Ms Griffin said the inquest will not look at how police investigated Ms Pope's allegation.
But it will look at the impact it had on her mental health - and how she was treated by health services from 2015.

Following Ms Pope's disappearance on 7 November, searches by police, the coastguard and police helicopter - along with hundreds of volunteers - were carried out in the Swanage area.
Her body was found by police on 18 November, close to where items of her clothing had been found two days earlier.
A post-mortem examination concluded she died of hypothermia.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigated both the handling of the search for Gaia and the rape allegation.

The ‘Broke’ Billionaire: Duty Free King Secretly Gives Away All of His Fortune to Charity

Charles 'Chuck' Feeney gave all of his money to charities anonymously.

Charles 'Chuck' Feeney anonymously donated more than $8 billion to charities, universities and foundations worldwide through his foundation.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:42 PM IST

Charles 'Chuck' Feeney, the former billionaire co-founder of airport retail giant Duty Free Shoppers, is now broke after giving away his massive fortune to charity.

The 89-year-old, who lived a frugal life, has donated more than $8 billion to charities, universities and foundations worldwide through his foundation, the Atlantic Philanthropies.

Feeney had pioneered the idea of Giving While Living, the idea to spending one’s fortune on big charitable donations during one's lifetime instead of creating a foundation upon death. He was famous for his promise that he will give all his money away to charitable causes, and he fulfilled his dream this month. And he insists he couldn’t be happier.

“We learned a lot. We would do some things differently, but I am very satisfied. I feel very good about completing this on my watch,” Feeney told Forbes.

In 2012, Feeney said he set aside $2million for his and his wife’s retirement with plans to donate the rest.

The philanthropist gave all of his money to charities anonymously, and even went to great lengths to keep his donations a secret. For that, he is known as the James Bond of Philanthropy.

Now, his extreme charitable contributions are no longer a secret. His foundation, which was dissolved on September 14, donated for efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland, helped modernise the health care system of Vietnam, and focused on expanding education.

He gave $3.7billion to education – including nearly $1billion to his alma mater Cornell, more than $870million to human rights and social change. He also gave more than $700million in gifts to health causes ranging from a $270million grant to improve public healthcare in Vietnam to a $176million gift to the Global Brain Health Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.

One of his final gifts was a $350million donation to Cornell for the university to build a technology campus on New York City’s Roosevelt Island.

Not one to boast about giving his money away, Feney urged other billionaires to also take the Giving While Living pledge. “Try it, you’ll like it” is his message.

It was his generosity that had influenced Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in launching the Giving Pledge in 2010 – a campaign for the world’s wealthy to give away at least half their fortune before death.

“Chuck created a path for other philanthropists to follow. I remember meeting him before starting the Giving Pledge. He told me we should encourage people not to give just 50 percent but as much as possible during their lifetime. No one is a better example of that than Chuck. Many people talk to me about how he inspired them. It is truly amazing,' Bill Gates said.

Today, the businessman lives in a modest apartment in San Francisco with a plaque that says 'Congratulations to Chuck Feeney for $8billion of philanthropic giving'.

Verdict

The Sony HT-X8500 brings with it good performance especially considering the fact that it doesn't have a subwoofer. It has eARC, making it futureproof, one 4K HDR passthrough and simple design. The bundled remote control is functional as well. The overall sound output is good for those looking for better sound when compared to TV speakers and don't want to delve into a complicated soundbar solution, or don't have space for it. On the downside, the virtual surround feature is gimmicky.

Sony HT-X8500 Single 2.1Ch Soundbar detailed review

Soundbars have become popular over the past couple of years to compensate for the lacklustre quality of sound output from TVs. Today, soundbars pack in quite a punch in terms of sound as well as features. From having smart assistants built-in, being modular in nature and even boasting of a complete home theatre experience, soundbars today have become an exhaustive category in themselves.

Over the past year, we have seen a lot of brands launch Soundbars without a subwoofer such as the Mi Soundbar (review), Bose Soundbar 700 (review) and more. Today we have with us a new addition to this category - the Sony HT-X8500. The device is compact, comes without a subwoofer and is the first soundbar we’ve tested that boasts of eARC. Priced at Rs 29,900 is the Sony HT-X8500, a worthy contender, or are you better off looking at other soundbars in the sub 30k price range? Let's find out!

What’s in the box

In the box, you get the soundbar itself along with a remote control. You also get two AAA batteries, HDMI cable and of course, the power cable. One thing to note is that the adapter is external and if your wall socket is further away from the place where you want to place the soundbar, you may want to think strategically on how to hide the power brick. I also wish the cable that connected the power brick to the wall was a little longer as in our setup the power brick was hanging off the table a bit. The remote control accompanying the system is simple and in line with what we've seen from Sony in the past. There is a 'Vertical Surround' button on the remote and we will delve into that in later sections. Know that when you use ARC to connect the soundbar to the TV, you can control the bar from the comfort of the TV remote.

Connectivity options

When it comes to connectivity options, the soundbar has an HDMI port for eARC/ARC and one HDMI pass-through port that supports 4K HDR pass through. In the same price range, we have seen soundbars like the JBL SB450 (review) with 3 HDMI passthrough ports with 4K HDR passthrough. The Sony HT-X8500 also has an optical port and has Bluetooth 5 connectivity. Speaking of formats supported, the speaker does boast of support for DTS-X and Dolby Atmos which is nice. However, without top firing speakers or rear speakers, we were interested to see how the object-based surround sound works on this bar. There is no Alexa or Google Assistant support with this speaker either.

Setting up the Sony HT-X8500

Setting up the speaker is as easy as placing it below your TV, connecting it via HDMI and you are good to go. However, there is one thing to keep in mind here. If you are using a smart TV that has HDMI 1.4, then you won't see the “Dolby Atmos” tag in relevant Netflix content. When connected to a TV with HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2 support) we saw the Dolby Atmos tag appear in Netflix content and this is something to keep in mind when purchasing the soundbar. It will work with your current FHD (HDMI 1.4) TV and when you upgrade to a 4K TV, you will notice the slight difference in the audio quality. This is great as it future proofs your sound setup.

Build and design

Speaking of the design of the soundbar, it is available in one colour only - black. The top of the soundbar has a matte textured finish with LED indicators and touch buttons for functions such as power, source, Bluetooth and volume controls. The touch buttons are quite sensitive and can be controlled with just a light tap. But they aren't so soft as to respond to accidental touches. The LED Indicators represent Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Vertical Surround, TV, HDMI and Bluetooth. Once you know which LED indicator is for what, it is easy to identify the source that is currently active. However, some may prefer a traditional display for source and volume information. When you control the volume, all the LED’s light up sequentially to show the level of output sound. All of them are lit to indicate full volume and then from the right to left they gradually start dimming, one by one, to signify a reduction in volume. This is a small change, but one that eliminates the need for a display on the soundbar. The LED’s are not too bright, so using them in a pitch dark room does not hamper the experience. The textured matte finish on the top is nice, does not attract fingerprints or dust and gives the soundbar a clean look.

All the connectivity ports are laid out at the back, in a cavity on the right. It is easy to reach and neatly laid out. There is another cavity on the left that houses the power port. You also have the option to wall mount the soundbar if you like.

Coming to the bottom, it has a metal finish with rubber feet strategically laid out to prevent vibrations. The rubber feet are small and don't elevate the soundbar too much, which is nice.

The front of the soundbar is dominated by the metal grill and if you shine enough light on them, you can see the four drivers powering it. Two are in the middle and one on either side. On the right and the left of the soundbar, you have the ducts for your bass output.

Overall, the build of the soundbar is extremely solid, better than the JBL SB 450 bar, has a clean look and finish and looks minimalistic in a home theatre setup. Just the way we like it.

Performance

For around the same price (give or take a few thousand rupees), you can get soundbars with a subwoofer. So how does the Sony HT-X8500 perform? Well, in a nutshell, the soundbar has good sound reproduction and channel shift especially when you use it in a bedroom (12 feet x 15 feet). In a larger room, the surround effects are lost. Needless to say that out of the box, the Virtual surround feature is gimmicky. It does expand the sound stage of the audio coming from the speaker, but it is nowhere close to giving you a Dolby Atmos like experience.

We’ve broken down the performance section into movies, music and gaming performance.

Movies

Watch movies and you will realize that the soundbar has a clear reproduction of sound. The dialogue is clearly audible even if there is a background score playing. From the bike chase sequence in Mission: Impossible to the guns firing all over the place in the Matrix and even in shows like Altered Carbon where you have gunfights and bullets whizzing all around, the soundbar does a good job of immersing you. Even though the sound is coming from directly in front of you, the channel separation is good. The bass though present seems lacking especially when you are watching an action movie like Mission: Impossible. The thud that brings you into the action is present but lacking. Dialogue is very clear, even in the heat of battle in a movie like John Wick.

Music

The Music performance of the Sony soundbar is what you’d expect from a Sony speaker. It is also dependent on the kind of music you listen to. So with classic rock, where the bass isn’t necessarily overpowering, it sounds clean. Vocals are distinguishable from the instruments and highs are clear. Electronic music like Daft Punk is clear where you can make out sounds of the synthesizer. Heavy metal music lovers will feel the lack of bass. The speaker doesn't distort at loud volumes and you can use this as the centrepiece when you have a party at home. At 70 per cent volume, the soundbar sounds really loud and you don't need to pump it higher. But you can and we went up to 90 per cent and the audio did not distort. It got really loud though.

Gaming

For gaming, we played Marvel's Spider-Man, God of War and Doom. Channel separation works well in all the games and when you turn your character around in the middle of a conversation or battle, the sound shifts on the speaker too which is good. In a game like Doom, the shotgun sound is dominated by a subwoofer, but honestly, I didn't miss it. Sure, when you switch to a soundbar with a sub, you can clearly make out the difference, but considering the performance of the device as a bar alone,  it works rather well. Even in Spider-Man, the gushing of wind and the swish of the webs is well pronounced.

Overall, if you lack the space, or don't want a subwoofer for some reason or want a simple plug and play solution and are worried that the bass is lost, then worry not. For the average-sized bedroom, this is a good no-nonsense soundbar. However, know that in all the above tests, we switched on and off the virtual surround mode. It did increase the sound stage a little bit, but it doesn't come close to giving you a true Dolby Atmos experience.

For bass heavy performance in a large living room, you can check out the JBL SB 450 (Review).

Remote control

The bundled remote control with the soundbar is simple and traditional - something we have seen with many Sony sound systems. All the buttons are on two vertical columns with the volume controls in the centre. On the remote control, you have the options for input, control for the various modes, a mute button. Buttons like Voice and DTS Dialogue help with boosting the vocals if you like, whereas functions like Night ensure the loud explosions and guns in action movies don't get too loud. You can make out the difference when switching between different modes and those that don't want to delve into settings can use the Auto Sound options.

Bottom line

So, here’s the ever-important question. Should you spend 30K on this soundbar? Well, the answer lies in what it is that you are looking for. If you want loud bass and are looking for an immersive home theatre-like experience with no compromise on bass, then there are other options to choose from. However, if you are looking for a bar to upgrade the sound of your TV and also want it to double up as a multimedia speaker, then you can consider it. It works well for content consumption like movies, games and even music. It also supports formats like DTS-X and Dolby Atmos. However, apart from slightly increasing the fidelity, don't expect to hear the sound from all around you as the vertical surround effects are gimmicky.

Verdict

The 5k segment does come with compromises, but the Xolo Era 1X doesn’t really provide a good smartphone experience. It has a good camera, but that’s about the only thing it has going for it. We’d recommend spending 2k more on the Redmi 3s.

Xolo Era 1X detailed review

Technology has slowly been trickling down from budget smartphones to the more affordable sub-5K categories. While phones that cost less than Rs. 10,000 are extremely powerful today, the sub-5k segment is yet to see a big revolution. The Xolo Era 1X is one of those devices, and it supports 4G LTE connectivity. The question is, has Xolo done enough?

Build and Design
One could argue that at its price, there are no smartphones that set a good example for design. The sub-5k smartphone hasn’t seen a decently built device since the Yu Yunique, and the Xolo Era 1X doesn’t change that. I’m not expecting metal and glass at this price, but the Era 1X feels outdated, which I don’t like.

The Era 1x is not as ergonomic as other 5-inch devices, with thicker bezels around the display making it a tad wider than other devices sporting 5-inch displays. In addition, the lack of protective Glass on the display also hurts the overall experience.

There are only two good things worth mentioning about the build and design. First, the two physical buttons, including the power key and the volume rocker, have good tactile feel, and second, the chrome band around the sides is aesthetically nice.

Display and UI
The Xolo Era 1X has a 5-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720p resolution. This is fast becoming a category standard. However, the quality of the display is still only at par with the Xolo One HD that came out more than six months ago.

While it is one of the better displays under 5K, there is scope for improvement. The colours are fine, but not worth writing home about. The same can be said about the touch experience and the brightness, which at 491 lux is nothing noteworthy.

Coming to the UI, the vanilla Android approach is likeable, and the fact that the Era 1X runs on Android Marshmallow gives it a distinct edge over the competition. However, it has only 8GB of storage and quite a few pre-loaded apps. As a result, I ran out of space on the device quite easily.

Performance
The processor brings the Xolo Era 1X to its knees. It has a 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC9830 SoC and it lags on regular apps like Facebook, YouTube, Maps etc. Even at this price, this is unacceptable from a phone today. The experience on phones that cost just about 1k more is miles better.

The SoC can’t handle multitasking well and the gaming experience is quite unacceptable too. The phone lags on reasonably simple games like Badlands, and Asphalt Nitro brought it to its knees easily. That being said, the phone doesn't get excessively hot even while gaming. I recorded a maximum temperature of 36 degrees while gaming and the temperatures went up to 38 degrees while video recording.

Call reception and audio quality on the other hand is better than average and since the phone does support 4G, you will get better network speeds. That said, the browsing experience is sub-par, thanks to the slow processor.

Battery
The Xolo Era 1X should last you about a work day, but only just. Under heavy usage it’ll need charging more often and its budget pricing means it doesn’t support fast charge either. Gaming and camera usage deplete the battery really fast.

Camera
If all of the above doesn’t irk you, then you might actually find this phone worth buying now. The Xolo Era 1X has a good camera for its price. The 8MP rear shooter is best under well lit conditions, with decent colour reproduction and admirable details.

The dynamic range is low and the HDR mode won’t fix it either. Low light images will show noise, but despite all this the Era 1X has the best camera among the sub-5K phones.

View post on imgur.com

The front facing camera does a decent job as well, but a strange pink hue is visible in some images. For low light, the front facing camera is aided by a flash but it just makes the subject yellow.

Bottomline
The Xolo Era 1X is not your best bet in this price range. It has a good camera, but everything else about it gets in the way of user experience. Yes, the 5k segment does come with compromises, but this experience isn’t worth spending on. We’d recommend spending an extra 2k to buy the Redmi 3S.

Kangana's Heavy Heart And Bollywood Response - by Shobhaa De

Kangana's Heavy Heart And Bollywood Response - by Shobhaa De

This is what happens during an ugly divorce - a laundry load of dirty linen is hung up for public viewing, and the owner of the laundry runs away. Think of the latest Bollywood controversy that erupted when Samajwadi MP Jaya Bachchan spoke during Zero Hour on the opening day of this session of parliament. Let's call it a dramatic 'First Day, First Show' moment, which is common currency in showbiz. Over to Bollywood vs. Bollywood.

Mrs. B took off and how! Known for her outspokenness and straight talk, inside and outside of parliament, Jaya decided it was about time someone (she!) put things in perspective about the entire 'Charsi Bollywood' debate that has become a news story ever since Sushant Singh Rajput's tragic death. Bollywood has never had it this bad, and as a veteran actor, Jaya obviously felt incensed enough to silence a few loudmouths who she says are giving a terrible name to the entire film industry by painting everybody with the same brush.

Starting with Loudmouth No.1. On the face of it, the obvious object of her ire was BJP MP. Ravi Kishan, who had spoken about the "drug addiction in the film industry". Jaya Bachchan would have none of it! What drug cartel was this chap talking about? She accused her co-parliamentarian of ingratitude, referencing a common Hindi saying involving a food-laden thaali. In short, this insensitive man was biting the hand that has fed him and made him what he is. She was equally upset by the manner in which social media was 'flogging' the film community at large, and, fumed the lady, the government was not doing a damn thing about! Tch! Tch! This is pretty shabby of the sarkar. The movie industry, as Jaya pointed out, provides direct employment to 5 lakh people and indirect employment to 5 million! Some of India's highest tax-payers are movie stars! Plus, the patriotic film community always stands by the government in times of national crisis.

atnt67oo

Jaya Bachchan sharply rebutted BJP MP and film actor Ravi Kishan's comments in parliament about drug addiction in Bollywood

Don't forget, the film industry also brings a great deal of international fame and recognition. Take a bow, Chaitanya Tamhane - Bollywood may now give you the recognition Venice just did! Naturally, Jaya was distressed by the lack of government support. She demanded 'protection' (no, not the Y-Category wala protection - that's reserved for another outspoken film industry lady). But first, the BJP parliamentarian had to be shown his proper place. For Ravi Kishan had had the temerity to badmouth Bollywood! Imagine his nerve! Jaya Bachchan is seriously bugged - how dare he? This sort of targeting and tarnishing of an industry that has created and nurtured him - and thousands like him - was clearly an act of ingratitude, thundered Mrs. B. And she wants the 'slander' to end. She has found support within the film community - it's always a good move to attempt damage control as a cohesive, united industry, protecting its own interests. Jaya B's got your back, guys!

Ravi Kishan hastily back tracked and swallowed his words (nothing was left behind on the empty thaali) as he weakly explained his position, making it worse for himself. He said things were different in his time, squarely accusing the present generation of stars of being naughty. Let me not go into his bizarre conspiracy theory - the one about Pakistan-China getting together to destroy our great and glorious film industry by drugging it. Wait a minute - why does Pakistan feature so prominently in Bollywood controversies these days?

Aha, Enter Kangana Ranaut!

She got Jaya Bachchan's goat by calling Bollywood a 'gutter'. Gutter, not sewer. Not nullah. There's one hell of a lot of glitz in that gutter, I guess. So, nobody has really cared to notice the grime and garbage underneath. Nobody, that is, except Kangana Ranaut (correct spelling right here, mediawalas, please note). Ms. Ranaut is back in Manali, relieved to have left the gutter behind. Her heart is heavy. Very heavy. But Jaya Bachchan is not interested in Kangana Ranaut's heart. Like everybody else, she is wondering what will emerge next as her statement. A lot, as it turned out. Ms. Ranaut came straight to the point, got intensely personal and asked bluntly if Mama Bachchan would have said what she did in parliament had her own children been targeted the way she, Kangana Ranaut, has been singled out and attacked. We breathlessly await Mrs. B's response. Maybe she'll point out to Ms. Ranaut that her own, exceptionally well-behaved children (Shweta and Abhishek) have not compared Mumbai to PoK? And does anybody really think the Bachchan bachchas are 'out of control'? No, na? But someone out there clearly is...theek hai?

ciglib8g

Kangana Ranaut asked if Ms Bachchan would react in the same manner if her daughter or son were affected

Till then a quick recap. Bollywood is anything but a soft target. And there is absolutely no justification in Bollywood playing the martyr role or pulling out the victim card at this juncture. Sorry, boss. Bollywood is Bollywood - a unique place, often called a Dream Factory. Bollywood does not manufacture toothpaste or biscuits. It manufactures fantasies. We love those fantasies. Which is why Bollywood remains as yummily successful as it is. Like in any other industry, there are amazing people in Bollywood, and some not-so-amazing. But, come on - do you care to know the amazing and not amazing folks in, say, a multinational company like Colgate? So, all that goody-goody talk and complaints about 'slander' is most misplaced. It's absurd to project Bollywood personalities as 'scapegoats' or 'sitting ducks'. Of course people in Bollywood do drugs, drink themselves silly, fool around, perhaps far more than regular working class people. Makes perfect sense - Bollywood thrives on glamour and projection, illusion and make believe. That's what makes Bollywood so seductive and magnetic. Fans feed off every little nugget emerging from Bollywood's maws. Particularly stories about wild parties, cocaine consumption, binge-boozing and crazy hook-ups. Which ordinary person can afford such indulgences even if the desire exists and the person wants to go ahead and snort?

We love Bollywood because it is Bollywood - frenetic, lunatic, creative, inventive, over-the-top and delirious. Excess is what keeps showbiz going. Movie stars lead lives that cannot be equated or compared to the lives of other successful professionals. The unspoken reality in urban India is that drugs are everywhere and everybody is smoking up - bankers, lawyers, doctors, corporate honchos, sports stars, assorted socialites, artists, fashion folks, chefs - those who can afford the stuff, do the stuff! But who cares about some suit doing lines in the loo during a key board meeting?

The clean-up drive is a waste of time. It's far better to be upfront and deal with Bollywood the way it is, without dousing heavy-duty sanitizer on all its colourful denizens. Or white-washing and spray-painting the grime. There are saints and there are sinners - they coexist in shanti. Bollywood is not Juhu beach which can be cleaned up thanks to the efforts of a few. Bollywood was and remains a badass monster.

Till then, lie low, actor log - and keep your nostrils clean!

Virender Sehwag expects this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) to be "extra special" and a major reason for that is Mahendra Singh Dhoni getting back on the pitch after announcing his international retirement following a year-long sabbatical from the game. (More Cricket News)

The IPL will get underway from September 19 in the UAE, moved out of India due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think this tournament will be extra special for everyone – the players as well as the audience...watching Dhoni back on the pitch is sure to be a delight. There's so much in store, need I say more?" Sehwag, who will be co-hosting a show 'Power Play with Champions' on Flipkart Video, said.

Dhoni, who surprised everyone with his decision to call it quits from international cricket in mid-August, will be back in action when he leads the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

CSK will take on defending champions Mumbai Indians in the lung-opener of the league in Abu Dhabi on September 19.

Sehwag said cricket is an integral part of an Indian's life and the fans have waited long for the sport to return.

"I've spent a lot of my time during the lockdown watching old matches, analyzing them, including my own innings. Cricket forms an important part of our DNA as Indians and we've waited with bated breath for it to return" he said.

The Asus ROG Phone 3 is a giant in both the form factor and in its performance. So while the former will put off buyers looking for a regular flagship, it's the latter that means a lot more to hardcore gamers.

Asus ROG Phone 3 detailed review

The ROG Phone 3 is the third iteration of Asus’ gaming smartphone, a niche it has meticulously carved (along with a handful of others, of course) to serve a growing community of smartphone enthusiasts and gamers. Primarily gamers. Lending the ROG brand to the device certainly infuses confidence considering the prowess it holds in the PC segment for gaming machines. And amidst a host of well-tuned flagships quite capable of delivering excellent gaming performance, the ROG Phone 3 deviously includes these minor, but significant features that make this the weapon of choice for anyone even remotely considering smartphone gaming as a career option.

The ROG Phone 3 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, the same flagship SoC found in the OnePlus 8 Pro, but speed-binned to make the Kryo 585 prime core to run at 3.1GHz instead of 2.8GHz. The Snapdragon 865+ also has the same Adreno 650 GPU, but tuned to run 10 per cent faster. At the top edge of smartphone computing, these numbers may not mean much for the average joe, but for a gamer, these are certainly some things to boast about.

But that’s not where the feature-list ends, and it’s important to list them out before even starting the review because it’s ultimately these features that sets this smartphone apart. These are the Air Triggers, and a 144Hz AMOLED display with 270Hz touch sampling and 25ms touch latency. Any PC gamer will tell you having the fastest CPU and GPU are only a part of the whole setup. The display and peripherals are equally important. That’s exactly what the ROG Phone 3 proves when it comes to smartphone gaming as well.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Benchmark Analysis

With the internals onboard, the Asus ROG Phone 3 is clearly the most powerful smartphone you can buy right now. Our unit was running on the Snapdragon 865+ along with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS 3.0 storage and managed to beat all other Android devices launched this year on benchmarks, by a good margin. There’s also a variant with 16GB RAM which we presume will post even higher scores on benchmarks.

The ROG Phone 3 also has a software tweak that unleashes higher compute power from the Snapdragon 865+, called the X Mode. It’s a performance-enhancing mode which gets triggered when you launch games to eke out better performance. Turning the X Mode on during benchmarks also gave higher scores. And the difference is quite significant.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Gaming

Everything about the ROG Phone 3’s design is off-putting for using as a daily driver. It weighs like a brick and looks gigantic in front of its contemporaries, but it's right when you start to play a game that every little decision taken about the ROG Phone 3 start to make sense. Asus offers what is perhaps the most personalised gaming experience on a smartphone, and it achieves so using a four-pronged approach —

1. The weight and dimensions add to a vice-like grip when held in landscape orientation for gaming. There is an additional USB-C port on the side to charge while gaming, and front-facing speakers that are perhaps the loudest you will ever come across on a smartphone. And then there are the AirTriggers.

2. The AirTriggers are not new to the ROG Phone lineup, but this time they have mutated. You can now map up to four functions on the two shoulder buttons, and even bind a function to motion control. Using the whole suite of abilities takes time to get used to, but once you do it leaves you a lot more space for your thumbs to shoot and aim. The AirTriggers are also instantly responsive, but my only gripe is you can’t control the haptic intensity of them, which is a little too intensive.

3. The 6.59-inch AMOLED display is the most impactful, however. It’s not as much the 144Hz refresh rate that gives you the edge, but the fast response times that make this the best gaming smartphone to use in competitive scenarios. The ROG Phone 3 boasts of 270Hz touch sampling and 25ms touch latency and using the touchscreen while gaming is a clear advantage, provided you learn to wield it to perfection. Like the AirTriggers, the touch sensitivity is way too high at default settings. For Call of Duty: Mobile, I had to dial down the touch and slide sensitivities from the Armoury crate to get this sensitive-being under control.

4. The Armoury Crate is the most unique weapon in this phone’s arsenal. It’s an app where games installed are garaged, giving you stats and recordings, and a place to tune the performance to death, for every individual games. It’s also a place that’d be instantly familiar to ROG PC and laptop users, showing the CPU, GPU, temperature values. Here, you can tune every aspect of the gaming performance — CPU and GPU core frequencies, thermal thresholds, scheduler, governor and more. These settings can be saved as presets and can now be shared with fellow ROG Phone 3 users.

All four aspects combined, what you get is comprehensively the most spectacular gaming performance from the ROG Phone 3. It’s not as much the hardware inside that gives it an edge, but more of what is outside, the things you touch and feel on the smartphone - like the display, the trigger buttons and the unique design elements, which offer an edge over others.

Ironically though, the ROG Phone 3 simply refused to be benchmarked by the GameBench application which we use to record frame rates data in real-time. That’s likely because the X Mode was killing background processes to focus solely on the game I was playing. However, we relied on the in-game metrics display to gauge the frame rates games delivered, and most of the popular games like Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Real Racing 3, Infinity Ops and the likes hit peak framerates with no perceivable drop in frames.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Sustained Performance

The thermals, however, were a little on the higher side. Little is an understatement. The phone managed to go up to 82 degrees while running AnTuTu with X Mode On, becoming nearly untouchable. And it took some 30 seconds for the phone to return to temperatures below 50 degrees. It’s not surprising that Asus has locked the Level 3 X Mode until the AeroActive Cooler accessory is attached to the phone. This phone heats up like crazy. The area right below the camera module got unbearably hot after a Battle Royale match on PUBG Mobile. Yet, this does not seem to impact performance, much.

The ROG Phone 3 throttled to only 89% of its max performance after 45 minutes of running the CPU Throttle Test. In the same test, the OnePlus 8 Pro throttled to 75% of its max performance. It means the heat dissipation system in the ROG Phone 3 works to keep the machine running even with all the heat generated. And the surface temperature can be kept in check with the AeroActive Cooler accessory.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Software

When setting up, the ROG Phone 3 offers two UI options — Asus’ gaming-flavoured Apex theme or the classic stock Android theme. The underlying interface is essentially stock Android with nearly no additional third-party apps. And within this stock framework, Asus has incorporated the Armoury Crate where I spent the most time. It’s a fascinating piece of work and we have already spoken of the things you can do with it. Outside of it, the ROG Phone 3 is like using any other stock Android smartphones, with swift transitions, the Google Discover feed on the home screen, and the overall lightweight, no-frills feel of vanilla Android.

There are a few bugs like background apps crashing, and the occassional stutter and aim reset in games, but over the week I was using the phone, there were already two updates issued fixing some of the issues that were there. The ROG Phone II took its own sweet time to get the update to Android 10, but going by the pace by which Asus is fixing bugs on the ROG Phone 3, things are looking up.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Camera

The ROG Phone 3 is a smartphone meant for gaming, but Asus did spend good resources on the camera setup, even though it’s clear this wasn’t high priority. There’s a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, the one that’s present on the Poco X2 on the primary camera with f/1.8 lens, another 13MP ultrawide lens and a 5MP macro lens. On the front is a single 24MP selfie shooter housed in a thin, bezel.

During the day, the camera is decent enough. The 64MP primary camera took some good shots during sunset, but the dynamic range and the vibrance are noticeably lacking when compared against the OnePlus 8 Pro. At night too, the images are not too bright even when shot using the night mode, and frankly, you can get far better images from other flagships available in this price range.

Honestly, we haven’t taken too many samples as of now, because Asus warned us of impending updates improving camera performance. So we will revisit this section in a few weeks for a more comprehensive opinion.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Battery

Part of what made me use the ROG Phone II as my daily driver was the insane battery life I used to get from the phone when I was out covering launch events and shooting. The phone, when not used up for gaming, lasted well over a day. With the same 6,000mAh battery, the ROG Phone 3 is no different. Even at 144Hz refresh rate, the ROG Phone 3 lasted well over 29 hours on a single charge. And this was with my endless benchmark runs, gaming and binging Top Gear episodes. For a better idea, playing 15 minutes of Call of Duty: Mobile dropped battery by 4 per cent, while 30 minutes of watching Indian Matchmaking (that’s enough for the eyes and mind) dropped charge by 5 per cent.

Asus ROG Phone 3 Design

The ROG Phone 3, when used as a daily driver, feels bulky and unusable because of the form factor, especially when you get comfortable using the tall and slim phones. But the ROG Phone 3 is also not meant for those users. As we said before, every little thing about the smartphone feels logical when you hold it in the gaming grip.

Having said that, Asus has toned down the aesthetics on the ROG Phone 3 as compared to the predecessor. It’s still roughly the same size and weight (kept to ensure backwards compatibility with the new accessories) but the gaming aesthetics are more muted. The RGB-lit ROG logo at the back is just as prominent, though. I’d have liked a few more LED light strips on the body, but this one is enough to say I mean business.

What is disappointing is the 3.5mm headphone jack is gone. What you get instead is a USB-C dongle to connect wired earphones and the only reason to go through this hassle is that the ROG Phone 3 also supports hi-res audio.

Asus ROGP Phone 3 Display

The 6.59-inch panel is the centre of attention on the ROG Phone 3. It doesn’t have the modern punch-hole design and instead comes with thin, but significant bezels on the top and bottom. The old-school form factor helps with the grip, preventing the palms from inducing accidental touches. And the 144Hz refresh rate is by far the fastest on a smartphone display, but it’s not immediately distinguishable from the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 120Hz panel. On the other hand, as mentioned before, the fast touch sampling rate and low touch latency make this the most responsive panel I’ve used before. Typing, swiping and scrolling on this is monstrously fast.

The large screen is also quite good for streaming movies and shows, thanks to its HDR support for the major streaming platforms. However, it’s not as bright as the OnePlus 8 Pro, or even the ROG Phone II, which breached the 1000 nits mark in our lab, which is quite disappointing.

Bottomline

I think by now we have comprehensively demonstrated what this smartphone is capable of when it comes to gaming. Every element of the smartphone has been decided with gaming in mind. An insanely responsive display, cutting-edge hardware, AirTriggers, and loud audio, offers an unfair advantage against other players using vanilla smartphones. It’s not that you will get better frame rates from the popular games from this phone, but aiming, shooting and moving is the most responsive on the ROG Phone 3.

So, even with all the horsepower inside, you can’t race the ROG Phone 3 on the Autobahn; because the Android gaming ecosystem only offers a two-lane highway to drive this beast. Despite the raw power, the eventual experience offered by the ROG Phone 3 is the same as any other Android flagship of 2020. We hear that it’s also Google Stadia ready, but until the service improves or launches (or both) for mass usage, the ROG Phone 3 may just feel a bit too overkill, but for good reason.
