‘Pandemic-hit restaurants can’t afford commissions charged by online food delivery firms’

To tide over the financial crisis triggered by the Covid pandemic, Kerala Hotels and Restaurants Association plans to start online delivery of food within city limits. The Association is in the process of developing an app in this regard.

In the initial phase, KHRA will focus mainly on booking of food parcels and delivery within the city limits and the later, services such as room bookings and table reservation in restaurants would be undertaken after hotels start functioning full fledged.

There are also plans to distribute vegetables to the member hotels under KHRA in association with the Jeevani scheme initiated by the State Agriculture Department to distribute pesticide free vegetables, said KHRA President Moideenkutty Haji.

The decision to start the online sales of food was taken to counter the ‘exorbitant’ commissions charged by food delivery agents. Hotels and restaurants are passing through a critical phase of uncertainty and are not in a position to provide commission to online food delivery firms, he added.

Contest for food app name

KHRA has also announced a contest to the public to suggest a name for the food delivery app. The winners will be eligible for a cash prize of ₹1 lakh and a two-day free stay in Kovalam. People can suggest the name in the website www.khra.in till September 22 and the winners will be selected by the association.

Pandemic Cuts Marine Refuel Demand, Driving Consolidation Among Bunker Suppliers - IBIA

Global demand for marine fuels is expected to fall by up to 17% due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on world trade, setting the stage for more consolidation among bunker suppliers, an industry executive told a conference on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE: Global demand for marine fuels is expected to fall by up to 17% due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on world trade, setting the stage for more consolidation among bunker suppliers, an industry executive told a conference on Wednesday.

Banks scaled back on their commodities trade finance after the coronavirus crisis led to defaults by some trading houses and exposed a series of frauds, leaving small and medium sized firms most exposed.

Unni Einemo, director of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), said firms were contending with low demand, low margins, ample supplies, increased counter-party risk, and constrained access to capital.

“Because of that we might expect further consolidation through mergers and acquisitions or attrition,” Einemo told the virtual Platts APPEC 2020 conference, adding that some firms could be forced to quit the market.

“Global bunker demand is expected to decrease significantly in 2020, even if it had held up quite well (in April and May),” Einemo said.

IBIA’s members forecast a 7%-17% drop in bunker fuel demand globally in 2020, she said.

Global marine fuel demand is estimated at about 300 million tonnes per annum, or about 5.2 million barrels per day (mbpd).

In its latest report released on Tuesday, the International Energy Agency said “fuel oil demand, which includes marine bunker as well as power generation and industrial uses, is forecast to decline by only 0.4 mbpd, or 6.3% in 2020,” the IEA said in its monthly report on Tuesday.

Most bunkering markets saw a big drop in June, with some seeing a “staggering” 30%-40% year-on-year contraction, although Singapore has to be among the least affected markets, said Einemo.

Singapore, by far the world’s top bunkering hub, saw year-on-year growth in marine fuel sales every month this year with the exception of May and June which contracted by just 2% each, official data showed.

Singapore’s resilience has a lot to do with it “having the widest variety of fuels on offer (and) it has become a preferred port because buyers are confident they are going to get the quality and quantity they are buying,” said Einemo.

But in other hubs like in the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah, bunkering demand plummeted as the spreading coronavirus slowed shipping activity.

EU Chief Executive Says Chances For Brexit Deal Fading Every Day

Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union's chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was "very little time" left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

BRUSSELS: Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union’s chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was “very little time” left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

In her major annual policy speech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen dedicated just a few sentences to Brexit, mostly focusing on the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic as well as digital and climate investments.

“With every day that passes, the chances of a timely agreement do start to fade,” von der Leyen told the European Parliament in a “state of the (European) Union” speech styled on the ones U.S. presidents deliver.

Von der Leyen also stressed both the EU and Britain negotiated and ratified their Brexit divorce deal and warned London the agreement “cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or dis-applied”.

“This is a matter of law, trust and good faith… Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership,” she said.

Von der Leyen said the bloc would “never backtrack” on UK’s divorce deal, which took three years to negotiate, as it was protecting the delicate peace on the island of Ireland from the consequences of Brexit.

Brexit talks are now in crisis yet again as Prime Minister Boris Johnson put forward a new Internal Market Bill to the UK parliament that would undercut Britain’s EU divorce treaty.

That increased the risk of the most damaging, no-deal economic split precipitating at the end of the year when Britain’s standstill post-Brexit transition ends.

Reuters reported exclusively on Tuesday, however, that Britain had quietly offered concessions on fisheries in trade talks with the European Union last week, leaving the bloc thinking London might still be open to clinching an agreement. [nL8N2GD1LG]

Bihar’s much talked-about Director General of Police (DGP) Gupteshwar Pandey is now going to feature as “Robinhood of Bihar” in a video song rendered by Deepak Thakur of ‘Bigg Boss’ fame.

Thakur, who hails from Muzaffarpur district, shot to fame when he made it to the finals of Bigg Boss Season 12, hosted by actor Salman Khan. He is now releasing a new music video titled "Robinhood Bihar Ke" featuring Pandey, the police chief of the state.  The song has been composed and sung by Thakur. The songs teaser on YouTube features Gupteshwar Pandey along with Thakur.

Thakur has also shared a poster of the song on his Twitter handle. In the poster, Gupteshwar Pandey is seen sitting on a couch, while Deepak is standing right behind him.

Thakur tells Outlook that the song will be released till September 20, and can be viewed on his YouTube channel “DT Production” which has more than two lakh subscribers.

Gupteshwar Pandey, a 1987 batch IPS officer, is a popular face on social media. He has 7.7 lakh followers on Facebook and has about 2.5 lakh followers on Twitter which he joined only in April 2020.

DGP Pandey is regularly updates about the law and order of the state and high-profile matters through video on social media. More recently, he has constantly been in headlines since the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The DGP is also known for conducting undercover investigations.

Pandey, who was appointed DGP before the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, had recently said that a Bihar Police team had investigated the Sushant Singh Rajput case undercover.

Prior to his appointment as Bihar DGP, he was the Deputy Inspector General of Munger and Muzaffarpur Zone. In the past, he has also served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in several Naxalite affected districts. He is also the brand-ambassador of JDU leader Nitish Kumar’s government's “liquor ban campaign”.

“I have known Gupteshwar Pandey since 18 years. He is the only one who has helped me complete my schooling,” says Thakur. “I know him personally. We have an old relationship. It is a matter of pride to be with such a person.”

According to Thakur, Pandey helps people in need. “He has also played an important role in the Sushant Singh death case. The central agencies are now investigating it only due to Bihar police’s initiative to ensure justice to the late actor and his family,” he said.

“Even after holding the top position, he is a humble man. Through this song, I am only highlighting whatever he has done. He is truly the Robinhood of Bihar. Sometimes people have seen him in disguise as a beggar, or a rickshaw-puller while investing cases."

DGP Gupteshwar Pandey hails from Buxar district of Bihar and had once tried his luck in politics as well. It is said that in 2009, he wanted to contest for Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket from Buxar for which he had resigned from the post of IPS officer. However, BJP decided to field its veteran leader Lamuni Choubey from Buxar.

His term as DGP is going to end in February 2021. There are already speculations that he may turn to politics after his retirement. Thakur said that if he joins politics and serves the state, it will be good for the state. “Politics needs a person like him. We have very few leaders from the state, who are well educated,” he adds.
