Survey Reveals Shocking Lack of Confidence by IT Professionals in Cybersecurity Capabilities

| Source: Hunters

LEXINGTON, Mass. and TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 16, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new survey conducted by Cybersecurity Insiders and commissioned by Hunters in August 2020 has revealed a shocking lack of confidence by IT professionals in their cybersecurity capabilities.

Among the high-level findings, the majority of respondents (64%) are moderately confident (or less) in their ability to respond to a cyberattack. Adding further insult to injury, 56% think their SOC is not mature enough to deal with emerging threats.

“Single-sensor threat detection technologies aren’t enough,” said Ofir Har Chen, said Ofir Har Chen, VP of Operations and Intelligence at Hunters. “Without connecting data points across surfaces and conducting a rich threat analysis attacks are left undiscovered, that's why an overwhelming number of security leaders are now embracing XDR solutions and threat hunting automation technologies.” The survey found that 93% of organizations see threat hunting as a top security initiative.

Why, prompts Har Chen? “Well, for one it takes 2.3x more time to investigate threats without threat hunting automation. Survey respondents also consider the automatic detection capabilities that threat hunting provides as a critical capability,” he added.

XDR (Extended Detection and Response) is an emerging category that is set for explosive growth. The survey provides some intriguing data on what cybersecurity professionals are missing today -- and what they want.

The industry is turning toward XDR in order to improve threat detection and response by crossing all attack surfaces and reducing alert noise. While the pace and breadth of threats outstrip human-based detection and single-point solutions, it also overwhelms SOC teams triage with a deluge of alerts and false-positives.

Organizations realize that threat hunting automation is viable to greatly contextualize existing detections and organizational context, to improve defenses against current and future attacks. Security leaders can provide their security analysts with powerful XDR solutions to enable earlier detection at scale, reduce dwell time, and improve breach detection.

Key findings include:

The report surveyed 400 security decision makers across several industries, including financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, high-tech, government, and education.

737 Max crashes that killed 346 were 'horrific culmination' of failures by Boeing, FAA, says House report

"What’s particularly infuriating is how Boeing and FAA both gambled with public safety in the critical time period between the two crashes," said the Democratic chair of the House committee.

A U.S. House investigative report into two Boeing 737 Max crashes that killed 346 people blamed the airline and the FAA for “repeated and serious failures."

The fatal crashes in Indonesia in October 2018 and Ethiopia in March 2019 were “a horrific culmination of a series of faulty technical assumptions by Boeing’s engineers, a lack of transparency on the part of Boeing’s management, and grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA," said the report released Wednesday by the Democratic-controlled House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

The committee chairman, Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., said in a statement that the report, written by Democratic staff, shows "how Boeing — under pressure to compete with Airbus and deliver profits for Wall Street — escaped scrutiny from the FAA, withheld critical information from pilots, and ultimately put planes into service that killed 346 innocent people.”

He added, "What’s particularly infuriating is how Boeing and FAA both gambled with public safety in the critical time period between the two crashes."

A Lion Air crash in October 2018 in Indonesia that killed 189 people was followed five months later by an Ethiopian Airlines flight's going down shortly after takeoff, causing the death of all 157 people aboard.

Boeing said in a statement after the report's release that it is “dedicated to doing the work” necessary.

“We have learned many hard lessons as a company from the accidents of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, and from the mistakes we have made,” the company said. “As this report recognizes, we have made fundamental changes to our company as a result, and continue to look for ways to improve.”

The FAA said in a statement that it “looks forward to working with the Committee to implement improvements identified in its report.”

“We are already undertaking important initiatives based on what we have learned from our own internal reviews as well as independent reviews of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines accidents,” the agency said.

DeFazio said the House committee chose to release the report following its 18-month investigation to “spotlight not only on the broken safety culture at Boeing but also the gaps in the regulatory system at the FAA that allowed this fatally-flawed plane into service.”

The committee's statement said its 239-page report, with more than 70 investigative findings, reveals “repeated and serious failures” by both Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The report claims that Boeing made “extensive efforts to cut costs” due to financial pressure and refused to slow its 737 MAX production line, jeopardizing safety.

It also alleges that Boeing withheld “crucial information” from the FAA, and that the federal agency's regulation of the airline was hurt by its current oversight structure with respect to Boeing, which "creates inherent conflicts of interest.”

EU Chief Executive Says Chances For Brexit Deal Fading Every Day

Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union's chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was "very little time" left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

BRUSSELS: Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union’s chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was “very little time” left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

In her major annual policy speech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen dedicated just a few sentences to Brexit, mostly focusing on the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic as well as digital and climate investments.

“With every day that passes, the chances of a timely agreement do start to fade,” von der Leyen told the European Parliament in a “state of the (European) Union” speech styled on the ones U.S. presidents deliver.

Von der Leyen also stressed both the EU and Britain negotiated and ratified their Brexit divorce deal and warned London the agreement “cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or dis-applied”.

“This is a matter of law, trust and good faith… Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership,” she said.

Von der Leyen said the bloc would “never backtrack” on UK’s divorce deal, which took three years to negotiate, as it was protecting the delicate peace on the island of Ireland from the consequences of Brexit.

Brexit talks are now in crisis yet again as Prime Minister Boris Johnson put forward a new Internal Market Bill to the UK parliament that would undercut Britain’s EU divorce treaty.

That increased the risk of the most damaging, no-deal economic split precipitating at the end of the year when Britain’s standstill post-Brexit transition ends.

Reuters reported exclusively on Tuesday, however, that Britain had quietly offered concessions on fisheries in trade talks with the European Union last week, leaving the bloc thinking London might still be open to clinching an agreement. [nL8N2GD1LG]

Verdict

The Google Pixel 2 is the Android phone we’d recommend to anyone who wants a compact Android phone and can afford its huge price tag. It has an excellent camera, but battery life needs some work and Google should put more into its design.

Google Pixel 2 detailed review

Having reviewed the Google Pixel 2 XL, there’s really little I can say about the Pixel 2. Yes, the smaller variant of Google’s premiere smartphones is a phone that warrants a review for itself. The most important aspect of these devices, including its AI prowess and camera remain the same as the Pixel 2 XL, but the Pixel 2 has a one or two things that make it different.

It’s worth noting that our Pixel 2 review is intentionally brief. The entire camera section will be missing, since you can read all about it on the Google Pixel 2 XL review here. In this review we cover only the aspects that differ between the two phones.

Build and Design

Of course, the most obvious amongst those is the fact that this phone is smaller. With a 5 inch display, the Pixel 2 is perhaps the most compact and ergonomic phone today. If you like compact phones, you’ll take to this phone right away. But that said, the Pixel 2 also has huge ugly bezels on either side. No one’s done a 5 inch 18:9 display yet, but I keep wondering whether that would have made this phone better.

While the Pixel 2 is meant to be one of 2017’s best Android phone, it certainly doesn’t qualify for that monicker in terms of design. The aluminium frame remains the same as its counterpart, but the Pixel 2’s smaller footprint also makes for a lighter smartphone. It’ll disappear in your pocket when you’re walking around.

As with the Pixel 2 XL, I wish the power button and volume rocker were more tactile, though they are easier to reach at this size.

To sum up, the Pixel 2 is without a doubt the most powerful compact phone today. But as with all Pixels so far, it brings utilitarian looks, putting functionality over beauty.

Display

Next, the display itself makes a big difference here. You could complain about its resolution, but the fact remains that 1080p resolution works absolutely fine on a 5 inch panel. To be honest, the battery benefits from the lower resolution far outweigh the benefits of higher pixel density. This is also an AMOLED panel, so you’ll get the warmer tone that many like. Of course, Google chooses AMOLEDs to provide Daydream support, so the company has also toned down the warmer tones to some extent.

That said, I do need to discuss colours on the Pixel 2’s screen a little more. For instance, the phone doesn’t have the Pixel 2 XL’s blue tint from off angles, and there’s been no reported burn-in issues (our review unit hasn’t had any issues either). That said, the Pixel 2’s display is not what you’d call vibrant. It lacks the “pop” that many people like. It also doesn’t have the curved edges of the Pixel 2 XL and 18:9 display, which makes it less immersive.

Simply put, you’re looking at a display that works, but doesn’t jump off the page as an attractive display.

Performance

In terms of power, the Pixel 2 is fitted with the same hardware as the bigger version. With a smaller screen and lower resolution, that amounts to higher scores on some benchmarks, especially ones counting frame rates. That said, there’s really no real difference in performance here. The Pixel 2 is fast, smooth and it’s a pleasure to use. Want a compact Android phones that’s fast too? This is your best bet.

Note: The high pitched clicking noises from the Pixel 2’s speakers, reported by some users, were not heard on our review unit. NFC was kept on throughout the review period. The issue though has been acknowledged by Google, and the company said turning off NFC is a temporary fix. An update is on the way to fix this issue.

Battery

A smaller form factor comes with a smaller battery. However, the 2700 mAh battery on the Pixel 2 lasts me just as long as the XL version. Leaving home with 100% battery at 10am, I found myself charging the phone between 4.30 and 5 pm every day. On a daily basis, I could play Sim City BuildIt for about 4.5 hours at a time. So, while you will get by a work day with this device, you’re looking at two charges per day. Like the Pixel 2 XL, that makes for average battery life.

Bottomline

I wasn’t particularly happy with the Pixel 2 XL, but I do like the Pixel 2. That’s partly because I’m a sucker for compact smartphones though. We must commend Google on keeping the essentials unchanged between the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (make note, Apple!).

The Pixel 2 is the Android flagship for anyone that likes compact phones. Of course, you also great the excellent camera to go with that. If I had to recommend one of the new Pixels, I’d pick this one without a doubt.

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents had also tested positive for covid and were treated in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Last week, I took a COVID test after having a light fever. Its report was negative. I was tested again as I was feeling unwell. The report has now come as positive," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Adesh Gupta said he was in quarantine during the last week and advised those who had come in contact with him to get themselves tested.

Delhi BJP media cell head Ashok Goel said Adesh Gupta was found positive in his third COVID-19 test. The previous two tests, including an RT-PCR, came out as negative, he said.

"The Delhi BJP president underwent a rapid antigen test last week and later, an RT-PCR test, both of which showed him to be COVID negative.  He had body ache but no fever. He was again tested using the RT-PCR method, the report of which came on Wednesday as COVID-19 positive," he said.

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents, who live in his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh, had also tested positive for COVID-19 and were treated in Delhi 15-20 days ago.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP office on Pant Marg was closed for sanitisation on Wednesday, a day after 17 people there tested positive for COVID-19.

These include staff members and their families who live on the party office premises.

On Monday, a peon of the Delhi BJP office tested positive for COVID-19, after which all the staff and their family members, numbering around 40, were tested.

Two BJP MPs from Delhi, Meenakshi Lekhi and Parvesh Verma, were found COVID-19 positive ahead of the Parliament session that started earlier this week.
