News: Thomas Cook relaunches as online travel agency

Thomas Cook relaunches as online travel agency

One of the most famous names in British hospitality, Thomas Cook relaunches today as an online travel business.

The move follows the acquisition of the company - which initially ceased trading in September last year - by international leisure company Fosun Tourism Group.

Branded as a ‘Covid-ready’ travel company, Thomas Cook will initially sell holidays to destinations on the safe travel corridor list.

Licensed by the CAA and ATOL-protected, the new Thomas Cook will launch as a purely online business via a website, offering customers thousands of hotels and flight routes so they can design their own holidays.

At launch, holidays will be available in popular beach destinations and cities in countries including Italy, Greece and Turkey, in line with the current travel corridors.

Customers will be able to choose from room-only to all-inclusive options, across three, four and five-star hotels.

The new website puts customers in control of their own holiday, with the ability to design their trip according to their budget, needs and specifications.

Add-ons will include transfers, car hire, airport parking, currency and travel insurance.

Alan French, who held the role of group strategy and technology director at the former Thomas Cook, has been appointed chief executive of the new venture.

He said: “We have reinvented one of the most recognisable names in British travel.

“Our new business will combine fantastic UK based customer service with an updated operating model protected by Atol and with the backing of a multi-billion-dollar organisation.

“We are launching now clearly aware of the short-term challenges posed by the pandemic.

“We and our Fosun backers are taking the long view and we want to offer choice, customisation, and 24/7 on-holiday customer care to families who wish to travel now and in the future.”

He added: “We know Brits are keen to travel but feel nervous about safety and any changes to government rules on quarantine.

“We are only selling destinations on the travel corridor list and all the hotels are flexible.

“We also will not charge customers a fee to change their holidays if government rules change.”

Fosun Tourism Group, which also owns Club Med, acquired the brand and online assets of Thomas Cook in November last year.

Jim Qian, chief executive of Fosun Tourism Group, said: “Thomas Cook has a proud heritage and after acquiring the brand last year we wanted to quickly return it to its home in the UK.

“Supporting the growth of the brand in China and its relaunch in the UK is a big step in our plan to turn Thomas Cook into a global success story and a key milestone in the development of the Fosun Tourism Group’s strategy.”

2-fold increase in admission at Kannada-English schools | Mangaluru News - Times of India

2-fold increase in admission at Kannada-English schools

Mangaluru: The pandemic, which led to the closure of educational institutions in the state, has not stopped some of the Kannada-English medium schools from recording two-fold increase in admissions.
Dakshina Kannada has 48 schools with approval to teach English from Class 1. As per the data available with TOI, these schools have collectively registered 1,735 admissions even before the commencement of regular classes. For instance, schools in Vittal and Daddalkad, in Bantwal taluk have 127 and 104 admissions respectively, which is the highest so far. Nearly 50 % schools have received above 30 admissions and about a dozen schools have double the number of children despite the state government capping the number at 30.
School managements also said that several children are on the waiting list as they have crossed the permitted numbers. Interestingly, there is a lukewarm response to Kannada-English school situated in South and North BEO limits, which had received single-digit admissions until this year.
Prakash Anchan, who heads Sarkari Shaale Ulisi Belesi (Protect and Promote Government School) and adopted Government Higher Primary School in Daddalakadu which has received 104 admission Class 1 English-Kannada medium, explained they have decided to have three batches for the students. “There is no dearth of enquiries. We have stopped admissions for the time being and are awaiting communication from government,” said Anchan. Daddalakadu school has children coming from six villages and one town municipality in Bantwal taluk. The school has classes from LKG to Class 9. While the school had 788 students last academic year, this year 285 students have sought admission.
Anchan also pointed that it is an apt time for the government to strengthen state-run schools by recruiting additional teachers.
Speaking to TOI, an official at the department of public instructions said, “If the parents were sceptical or had received negative feedback, the school admission wouldn’t have gone up. Parents who send their kids to private schools have personally witnessed how the Vidyagama scheme has been a great step during the pandemic. All these factors have given a boost to the rejuvenation of government schools.”
Commenting on the fall in admissions at government schools in city limits, an official said, “ The dip in demand is due to the migrant labours being away. The seats will get filled once they return to the city.”

EDMONTON, Alberta: Inside a lounge at the JW Marriott usually reserved for their meals and meetings, the Dallas Stars enjoyed a moment.

It wasn’t an all-out party because they are still four wins away from winning the Stanley Cup. It was a low-key celebration of reaching the final, a significant accomplishment for a team that has been through some real challenges in recent years.

“To watch the staff, the players some guys that have never lived this before it was very exciting,” general manager Jim Nill said. Theres guys that have been on this team for a long time and never been this far. Its an exciting time for them. But we do know that there is one more step here yet.

The steps to this point included plenty of stumbles. Remember when CEO Jim Lites ripped captain Jamie Benn and top center Tyler Seguin for being terrible? That was December 2018. Or how about this past December, when the Stars abruptly fired coach Jim Montgomery for unprofessional conduct?

Add in being eliminated in a heartbreaking double-overtime Game 7 loss in the second round last season to eventual champion St. Louis, and things haven’t been easy for Dallas on or off the ice. That adversity is one major reason the franchise is in its first final since 2000.

Seguin said the Stars believe they are are never out of a game.

Theres just been so much stuff thats happened to us that we always seem to rise to the occasion, he said. Because of those experiences as a group, we have that confidence, that composure and that ability to get the job done when we need it most.

Not terrible for a team that made the playoffs just three times in the past 11 seasons. Since Nill took the reins in 2013, the Stars have four playoff appearances and are now in the final on their fourth coach in as many seasons after Rick Bowness took over for Montgomery.

Perhaps they wouldn’t have gotten this far if Montgomery were the coach, or if Nill picked one of his other two assistants with previous experience to take over. He chose the 65-year-old hockey lifer as the interim replacement because Bowness had been around an extra year. It has worked out.

Its been a crazy year for all of us and Im sure especially him, Benn said. To come in halfway through the year and jump right back into a head coaching role, it cant be that easy, but hes done a great job with us.

It wasn’t easy for Benn or Seguin to take criticism from Lites and others about their play and their big-ticket contracts. When they helped Dallas make the 2019 playoffs, that run ended with Patrick Maroon ‘s goal for the Blues in the second overtime one victory shy of the Western Conference final.

You learn from that, you get in those situations and that makes you stronger, makes you hungrier and thats where were at, Nill said. Youve got to learn to lose before you win.

Barry Trotz knows that well. The New York Islanders coach stepped into his previous job with Washington after the Capitals had absorbed six early playoff exits, and Trotz had three of his own before winning the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Theres very few teams in any sport (that) have sort of put a group together and theyve won a championship right away without maybe a little bit of failure on the way, Trotz said. “How you focus with defeat, how you pick yourself up after a tough loss or a game that doesnt go your way individually or collectively thats what builds winners or champions.”

To become champions, the Stars still need to win one more series. Barclay Goodrow and the Tampa Bay Lightning could next be up next.

Theyre in the Stanley Cup Final for a reason, said Goodrow, who played against Dallas the past several seasons while with San Jose. They defend hard. They just find ways to win. Its not a fluke why they made it to the finals.

After being outshot 166-118 by Vegas in the second round and leaning on goaltender Anton Khudobin to make some timely saves, the Stars aren’t apologizing for moving on to the final. Nill agreed with Goodrow that it’s not a fluke, and now his team gets to keep proving that.

“I definitely believe we deserve to be here,” he said. Our guys have stuck with it. They believe in themselves, theyre hardened and theyre resilient and thats what you have to be in the playoffs. Youre not going to make it very far in the playoffs if youre not resilient, and we have a resilient group of guys.

SP University finishes 232 exams both in online and offline mode | Vadodara News - Times of India

SP University finishes 232 exams both in online and offline mode

Sardar Patel University is the first university to kick off online exams
Vadodara/ Anand: At a time when many state universities are still struggling to conduct exams and declare results, Vallabh Vidyanagar-based Sardar Patel University (SPU) conducted 232 examinations so far and also declare the results.
SPU was the first university in the state to kick off offline exams (pen and paper exam) in June-end. Based on government’s directives, the university had to put a halt on its exam schedule but conducted the remaining exams in the month of July.
With 45 exams in July, 25 in August and 31 in September, the university has successfully conducted exams with a blend of online and offline modes of around 40,000 students even as it has advanced its plan to conduct internal exams of current academic year by end of this month.
While some state universities like Gujarat University, Saurashtra University, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University and Shri Govind Guru University, Godhra are strictly following offline mode of exams, other state universities like M S University, Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan, Gujarat Technological University are conducting just online exams.
Interestingly, even for the online exams, SPU explored different options. At first, it conducted online exams for three major streams – MSc (chemistry), MCom and MSW – using a software outsourced from a Rajkot-based firm.
Later, a software prepared by its own computer science department was used to conduct online exams for students of MCA, MBA and MSc IT among others. Departments like statistics, mathematics, material science among others conducted the online exam on google platform.
It is worth mentioning here that majority of students in education town Vallabh Vidyanagar are not locals and stay in private and university-run hostels. Yet, the university has not come across a single case of Covid-19 infection.
“Fortunately, not a single student, teacher or non-teaching staffer of our university till date has tested positive of Covid-19 even as we conducted the exams in offline mode,” said SPU vice-chancellor professor Shirish Kulkarni.
To ensure that Covid-19 safety protocols are followed strictly, the university hostels have turned into fortress.
“When students started returning to their hostels for offline exams, medical teams carried out their complete screening. Later, students were allowed to step out from their hostels only for exams. The gates otherwise remain closed,” he said.
Meanwhile, the university has started admission process for post-graduate courses since Monday.
