737 Max crashes that killed 346 were 'horrific culmination' of failures by Boeing, FAA, says House report

"What’s particularly infuriating is how Boeing and FAA both gambled with public safety in the critical time period between the two crashes," said the Democratic chair of the House committee.

A U.S. House investigative report into two Boeing 737 Max crashes that killed 346 people blamed the airline and the FAA for “repeated and serious failures."

The fatal crashes in Indonesia in October 2018 and Ethiopia in March 2019 were “a horrific culmination of a series of faulty technical assumptions by Boeing’s engineers, a lack of transparency on the part of Boeing’s management, and grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA," said the report released Wednesday by the Democratic-controlled House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

The committee chairman, Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., said in a statement that the report, written by Democratic staff, shows "how Boeing — under pressure to compete with Airbus and deliver profits for Wall Street — escaped scrutiny from the FAA, withheld critical information from pilots, and ultimately put planes into service that killed 346 innocent people.”

He added, "What’s particularly infuriating is how Boeing and FAA both gambled with public safety in the critical time period between the two crashes."

A Lion Air crash in October 2018 in Indonesia that killed 189 people was followed five months later by an Ethiopian Airlines flight's going down shortly after takeoff, causing the death of all 157 people aboard.

Boeing said in a statement after the report's release that it is “dedicated to doing the work” necessary.

“We have learned many hard lessons as a company from the accidents of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, and from the mistakes we have made,” the company said. “As this report recognizes, we have made fundamental changes to our company as a result, and continue to look for ways to improve.”

The FAA said in a statement that it “looks forward to working with the Committee to implement improvements identified in its report.”

“We are already undertaking important initiatives based on what we have learned from our own internal reviews as well as independent reviews of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines accidents,” the agency said.

DeFazio said the House committee chose to release the report following its 18-month investigation to “spotlight not only on the broken safety culture at Boeing but also the gaps in the regulatory system at the FAA that allowed this fatally-flawed plane into service.”

The committee's statement said its 239-page report, with more than 70 investigative findings, reveals “repeated and serious failures” by both Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The report claims that Boeing made “extensive efforts to cut costs” due to financial pressure and refused to slow its 737 MAX production line, jeopardizing safety.

It also alleges that Boeing withheld “crucial information” from the FAA, and that the federal agency's regulation of the airline was hurt by its current oversight structure with respect to Boeing, which "creates inherent conflicts of interest.”

EU Chief Executive Says Chances For Brexit Deal Fading Every Day

Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union's chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was "very little time" left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:15 PM IST

BRUSSELS: Every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal with Britain, the European Union’s chief executive said on Wednesday, warning London that there was “very little time” left to put an agreement in place by the end of the year.

In her major annual policy speech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen dedicated just a few sentences to Brexit, mostly focusing on the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic as well as digital and climate investments.

“With every day that passes, the chances of a timely agreement do start to fade,” von der Leyen told the European Parliament in a “state of the (European) Union” speech styled on the ones U.S. presidents deliver.

Von der Leyen also stressed both the EU and Britain negotiated and ratified their Brexit divorce deal and warned London the agreement “cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or dis-applied”.

“This is a matter of law, trust and good faith… Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership,” she said.

Von der Leyen said the bloc would “never backtrack” on UK’s divorce deal, which took three years to negotiate, as it was protecting the delicate peace on the island of Ireland from the consequences of Brexit.

Brexit talks are now in crisis yet again as Prime Minister Boris Johnson put forward a new Internal Market Bill to the UK parliament that would undercut Britain’s EU divorce treaty.

That increased the risk of the most damaging, no-deal economic split precipitating at the end of the year when Britain’s standstill post-Brexit transition ends.

Reuters reported exclusively on Tuesday, however, that Britain had quietly offered concessions on fisheries in trade talks with the European Union last week, leaving the bloc thinking London might still be open to clinching an agreement. [nL8N2GD1LG]

Verdict

The Google Pixel 2 is the Android phone we’d recommend to anyone who wants a compact Android phone and can afford its huge price tag. It has an excellent camera, but battery life needs some work and Google should put more into its design.

Google Pixel 2 detailed review

Having reviewed the Google Pixel 2 XL, there’s really little I can say about the Pixel 2. Yes, the smaller variant of Google’s premiere smartphones is a phone that warrants a review for itself. The most important aspect of these devices, including its AI prowess and camera remain the same as the Pixel 2 XL, but the Pixel 2 has a one or two things that make it different.

It’s worth noting that our Pixel 2 review is intentionally brief. The entire camera section will be missing, since you can read all about it on the Google Pixel 2 XL review here. In this review we cover only the aspects that differ between the two phones.

Build and Design

Of course, the most obvious amongst those is the fact that this phone is smaller. With a 5 inch display, the Pixel 2 is perhaps the most compact and ergonomic phone today. If you like compact phones, you’ll take to this phone right away. But that said, the Pixel 2 also has huge ugly bezels on either side. No one’s done a 5 inch 18:9 display yet, but I keep wondering whether that would have made this phone better.

While the Pixel 2 is meant to be one of 2017’s best Android phone, it certainly doesn’t qualify for that monicker in terms of design. The aluminium frame remains the same as its counterpart, but the Pixel 2’s smaller footprint also makes for a lighter smartphone. It’ll disappear in your pocket when you’re walking around.

As with the Pixel 2 XL, I wish the power button and volume rocker were more tactile, though they are easier to reach at this size.

To sum up, the Pixel 2 is without a doubt the most powerful compact phone today. But as with all Pixels so far, it brings utilitarian looks, putting functionality over beauty.

Display

Next, the display itself makes a big difference here. You could complain about its resolution, but the fact remains that 1080p resolution works absolutely fine on a 5 inch panel. To be honest, the battery benefits from the lower resolution far outweigh the benefits of higher pixel density. This is also an AMOLED panel, so you’ll get the warmer tone that many like. Of course, Google chooses AMOLEDs to provide Daydream support, so the company has also toned down the warmer tones to some extent.

That said, I do need to discuss colours on the Pixel 2’s screen a little more. For instance, the phone doesn’t have the Pixel 2 XL’s blue tint from off angles, and there’s been no reported burn-in issues (our review unit hasn’t had any issues either). That said, the Pixel 2’s display is not what you’d call vibrant. It lacks the “pop” that many people like. It also doesn’t have the curved edges of the Pixel 2 XL and 18:9 display, which makes it less immersive.

Simply put, you’re looking at a display that works, but doesn’t jump off the page as an attractive display.

Performance

In terms of power, the Pixel 2 is fitted with the same hardware as the bigger version. With a smaller screen and lower resolution, that amounts to higher scores on some benchmarks, especially ones counting frame rates. That said, there’s really no real difference in performance here. The Pixel 2 is fast, smooth and it’s a pleasure to use. Want a compact Android phones that’s fast too? This is your best bet.

Note: The high pitched clicking noises from the Pixel 2’s speakers, reported by some users, were not heard on our review unit. NFC was kept on throughout the review period. The issue though has been acknowledged by Google, and the company said turning off NFC is a temporary fix. An update is on the way to fix this issue.

Battery

A smaller form factor comes with a smaller battery. However, the 2700 mAh battery on the Pixel 2 lasts me just as long as the XL version. Leaving home with 100% battery at 10am, I found myself charging the phone between 4.30 and 5 pm every day. On a daily basis, I could play Sim City BuildIt for about 4.5 hours at a time. So, while you will get by a work day with this device, you’re looking at two charges per day. Like the Pixel 2 XL, that makes for average battery life.

Bottomline

I wasn’t particularly happy with the Pixel 2 XL, but I do like the Pixel 2. That’s partly because I’m a sucker for compact smartphones though. We must commend Google on keeping the essentials unchanged between the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (make note, Apple!).

The Pixel 2 is the Android flagship for anyone that likes compact phones. Of course, you also great the excellent camera to go with that. If I had to recommend one of the new Pixels, I’d pick this one without a doubt.

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents had also tested positive for covid and were treated in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Last week, I took a COVID test after having a light fever. Its report was negative. I was tested again as I was feeling unwell. The report has now come as positive," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Adesh Gupta said he was in quarantine during the last week and advised those who had come in contact with him to get themselves tested.

Delhi BJP media cell head Ashok Goel said Adesh Gupta was found positive in his third COVID-19 test. The previous two tests, including an RT-PCR, came out as negative, he said.

"The Delhi BJP president underwent a rapid antigen test last week and later, an RT-PCR test, both of which showed him to be COVID negative.  He had body ache but no fever. He was again tested using the RT-PCR method, the report of which came on Wednesday as COVID-19 positive," he said.

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents, who live in his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh, had also tested positive for COVID-19 and were treated in Delhi 15-20 days ago.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP office on Pant Marg was closed for sanitisation on Wednesday, a day after 17 people there tested positive for COVID-19.

These include staff members and their families who live on the party office premises.

On Monday, a peon of the Delhi BJP office tested positive for COVID-19, after which all the staff and their family members, numbering around 40, were tested.

Two BJP MPs from Delhi, Meenakshi Lekhi and Parvesh Verma, were found COVID-19 positive ahead of the Parliament session that started earlier this week.

Changes in Banking Regulation Law Aimed at Improving Governance in Cooperative Banks, Says Nirmala Sitharaman

Moving the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2020 in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman said the government was compelled to come out with an ordinance during the lockdown period as the condition of the cooperative banks was "grave".

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 7:07 PM IST

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said amendments to the banking regulation law seeking to extend the supervision of RBI to cooperative banks are aimed at improving their governance and protecting depositors' money.

Moving the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2020 in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman said the government was compelled to come out with an ordinance during the lockdown period as the condition of the cooperative banks was "grave".

Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of cooperative banks increased from 7.27 per cent in March 2019, to over 10 per cent by March 2020, she said, adding as many as 277 urban cooperative banks have reported losses in 2018-19 fiscal.

She further said over 100 urban cooperative banks were unable to meet the minimum regulatory capital requirement and 47 had negative net worth at the end March 2019.

In June, the Union Cabinet had approved an ordinance to bring cooperative banks under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It also extended the provisions applicable on commercial banks to cooperative banks.

Responding to Congress' opposition to the ordinance route taken by the Centre to amend the banking regulation law, Sitharaman said the ordinance was brought in only because the financial health of many cooperative societies which were also performing the role of banks was becoming "very delicate".

"Due to the pandemic, the stress in cooperative banks increased and the gross NPA ratio increased from 7.27 per cent in March 2019 to over 10 per cent in March 2020. Therefore it was felt that to protect depositors' interest we should have the ordinance brought in," she said.

Section 45 of the Banking Regulation Act is being amended to enable making of a scheme of reconstruction or amalgamation of a banking company for protecting the interest of the public, depositors and the banking system and for securing its proper management, even without making an order of moratorium, so as to avoid disruption of the financial system.

Besides, amendments in sections 3 and 56 extend the provisions applicable to scheduled commercial banks to cooperative banks and brings them within the RBI regulation.

The amendments do not apply to Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) or co-operative societies whose primary object and principal business is long-term finance for agricultural development, and which do not use the words "bank", "banker" or "banking".

"We are not doing anything to touch state cooperatives, we are not doing anything to primary agricultural credit societies, we are not doing anything to touch cooperative societies whose primary object and business is providing long-term finance for agricultural development," Sitharaman said.

The amendments would be applicable only for those cooperative societies which are engaged in banking, she added.

Fall Guys Mid-Season Update Is Live With New Rounds, Big Yeetus Hammer, and Easy Anti-Cheat

Fall Guys costs Rs. 529 on Steam and Rs. 1,664 on the PS4 in India

Highlights
  • Fall Guys gets mid-season update
  • The update is live on the PlayStation 4 and Steam
  • Fall Guys introduces Big Yeetus hammer obstacle with this update

Fall Guys has received a mid-season update that brings a few changes to the game, ahead of its major Season 2 update coming in October. Players will get to see various round variations, stability and performance improvements, and a new obstacle called the ‘Big Yeetus'. Additionally, the developers have also announced that they have implemented Epic's Easy Anti-Cheat system to keep hackers out of the game. The Fall Guys mid-season update is live on the PlayStation 4 and on Steam for PC players.

Fall Guys was released early last month and has gathered a lot of attention for its new spin on the battle royale genre. With fans eagerly waiting for the Season 2 update, developers Mediatonic have released a mid-season update with a few changes and the addition of a new obstacle that they are calling ‘Big Yeetus.' In the post on the official Fall Guys website, the developers have stated that dozens of obstacles, random rotations, and more tumbling fruit has been added to Blunderdome. Players will seemingly have no idea when these changes will occur, the developers add.

Big Yeetus is a large hammer obstacle that, as per the video shared by the developers, can either launch players across the playground directly to the finish, or in a different direction ruining their run.

The team has also implemented some matchmaking changes with enhanced server stability, VFX improvements, and more for players to have a smoother experience.

Mediatonic has implemented Epic's Easy Anti-Cheat system as well. This will allow the team to detect and take necessary action against hackers who use exploits to gain an unfair advantage in the game. Earlier, to tackle hacking and cheating, Fall Guys implemented a sort of “Cheater Island” system that put all the confirmed cheaters into one game. However, it was not a full proof plan and the developers decided to cancel it.

Fall Guys Season 2 update will be released next month, but the developers have not shared an exact release date yet. They did, however, share a sneak peek for the upcoming season, revealing that it will bring new rounds inspired by quests from the middle-ages, new Medieval hero costumes, and more. A report report by GamesRadar states that the Fall Guys Season 2 will be released on October 6. The official synopsis of Season 2 on Steam reads, “Fall Guys Season 2 will bring the dragon fire with feudal fortresses, knockout knights and pugilistic paladins among new additions coming this October. A full season of new costumes, emotes and more will reward players as they lay siege to the Middle Ages.”

Delhi Likely To Get Its First Wild Animal Rescue Centre By The Year-End

Delhi likely to get an animal rescue centre soon, say officials (Representational Image)

New Delhi:

Delhi is likely to get its first wild animal rescue centre by the end of the year, forest department officials said on Wednesday. The facility will come up on a 1.24-acre plot in Rajokri where a monkey rescue centre is lying abandoned. Three five-member rapid response teams will be constituted to rescue stranded animals and rehabilitate them at the Rajokri facility, according to an official.

The Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority has sanctioned funds for the wild animal rescue centre. The teams will be constituted in a month, while the facility will be ready by year-end, the official said.

The animal rescue centre will come up in place of a proposed facility for birds. "There was a proposal for a wild bird rescue centre pending before the Supreme Court-constituted Central Empowered Committee. The panel said there was no need for it considering only kites, pigeons and other such birds will be treated there," an official told news agency PTI.

The panel was not quite convinced about setting aside government resources for birds, which are not of great conservation value and asked the forest department to provide data justifying the requirement of such a centre.

"When we went through data of animals rescued, we came to know that birds alone did not justify a separate facility. But if we talk of wild animals rescued, such as nilgai, mongoose, monkeys and jackals, and reptiles, there is more than adequate justification," the official said.

Approval of the Ridge Management Board was needed to "broaden" the proposal of a wild bird rescue centre to an animal rescue centre. The proposal was to be discussed at a meeting of the Ridge Management Board on January 18, which could not be convened in view of the Assembly polls in February.

Thereafter, it was delayed due to the COVID-19-triggered lockdown. "The proposal will now be discussed in a board meeting scheduled on Friday. Once we have the approval, we will approach the Supreme Court-appointed committee with adequate justification," the official said. Approval of the Supreme Court through the panel is required to use Ridge land for any other purpose.

Rashami Desai Claims She Spoke to Disha Salian on June 7, Says 'We Were Planning a Trip in October'

Rashami Desai and Disha Salian

Actress Rashami Desai has claimed that she had spoken to Disha Salian on the phone on June 7 about a possible trip to Himachal Pradesh in October. Disha allegedly died by suicide on June 8.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:25 PM IST

Actress Rashami Desai has claimed that she and late celebrity manager Disha Salian were planning a vacation together with friends a day before the latter allegedly died by suicide. Disha allegedly fell to her death from the 14th floor of a building in Malad West on June 8.

In an interview with the Republic TV, Rashami claimed that she had spoken to Disha on the phone on June 7 about a possible trip to Himachal Pradesh in October. "On June 7, when I spoke to her, we were planning a trip to Shimla in October. One of my very close friend's birthday party was there so we were planning the Shimla trip, so then we said we should meet and talk."

"I spoke to her a day prior to the incident. That had nothing to do with the (alleged) party (on June 8), we spoke very normally. We did not speak at length at that time actually. We said that we could not talk everything on the phone, so we eventually made plans to meet later on but the next day I got the sad news," Rashami added.

Rashami denied knowing about any party that Disha allegedly attended on June 8. "I know Disha for a very long time but I was not aware of the party in Juhu," she said.

Rashami further claimed that although Disha was a very close friend, she was not in touch with her for a very long time as she was inside the Bigg Boss house for close to six months. "She was a very dear friend and I would not like to comment on anything. I was not aware of whatever she was going through because I was part of a reality show, right after that the pandemic happened so I was not in touch for 6-7 months."

"Disha was someone who was a very big name in the industry, she has managed many big names. For me, she was a doll, beautiful and a pure soul and I don't think the family is also comfortable talking about it," Rashami added.

DGP Pandey is regularly updates about the law and order of the state and high-profile matters through video on social media. More recently, he has constantly been in headlines since the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The DGP is also known for conducting undercover investigations.

Pandey, who was appointed DGP before the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, had recently said that a Bihar Police team had investigated the Sushant Singh Rajput case undercover.

Prior to his appointment as Bihar DGP, he was the Deputy Inspector General of Munger and Muzaffarpur Zone. In the past, he has also served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in several Naxalite affected districts. He is also the brand-ambassador of JDU leader Nitish Kumar’s government's “liquor ban campaign”.

“I have known Gupteshwar Pandey since 18 years. He is the only one who has helped me complete my schooling,” says Thakur. “I know him personally. We have an old relationship. It is a matter of pride to be with such a person.”

According to Thakur, Pandey helps people in need. “He has also played an important role in the Sushant Singh death case. The central agencies are now investigating it only due to Bihar police’s initiative to ensure justice to the late actor and his family,” he said.

“Even after holding the top position, he is a humble man. Through this song, I am only highlighting whatever he has done. He is truly the Robinhood of Bihar. Sometimes people have seen him in disguise as a beggar, or a rickshaw-puller while investing cases."

DGP Gupteshwar Pandey hails from Buxar district of Bihar and had once tried his luck in politics as well. It is said that in 2009, he wanted to contest for Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket from Buxar for which he had resigned from the post of IPS officer. However, BJP decided to field its veteran leader Lamuni Choubey from Buxar.

His term as DGP is going to end in February 2021. There are already speculations that he may turn to politics after his retirement. Thakur said that if he joins politics and serves the state, it will be good for the state. “Politics needs a person like him. We have very few leaders from the state, who are well educated,” he adds.

Verdict

It’s rare to come across a pair of earphones that ticks an inordinate number of boxes of what you’d consider the perfect pair of headphones to be. The Audeze LCD-i3 gives users lifelike planar sound that has a beautiful airy quality, which coupled with the massive soundstage sounds, for the lack of a better word, epic. Add to this the fact that you can connect these headphones to iPhones via a lightning cable, 3.5mm jacks via a 3.5mm wired cable and wirelessly through Bluetooth, you’ve got an extremely versatile pair of earphones. The price is exorbitant, yes, but given the customisation options and stellar sound quality, you’re likely to feel that your money is spent well.

Audeze LCD-i3 detailed review

Audeze headphones have always been a favourite here at the Digit test lab and the new LCD-i3 cements our liking for this audiophile-grade brand even more. The Audeze LCD-i3 is a pair of open-back, planar-magnetic IEMs that borrow heavily in terms of design from the flagship Audeze LCD-i4 earphones, which are significantly costlier than the LCD-i3. They also mimic the iSINE range of Audeze products when it comes to low-impedance. As a company, Audeze nails the planar magnetic technology used in IEMs since they make the headphones open-back. Closed-shell IEMs with planar magnetic tech often tend to sound shrill between 3-5khz and Audeze avoids this due to their decision to make the LCDi-series open-back. The Audeze LCD-i3 is priced at Rs 79,990 and certainly mesmerised us with its sound which is why it ended up being the winner in the Best Performing Wired IEM segment in our annual Digit Zero1 awards. Let’s delve into these earphones further.

In the box

  • 3.5mm audio cable
  • Lightning iOS cipher cable (for iPhones)
  • Bluetooth module cable
  • Micro-USB charging cable for Bluetooth module
  • Five sizes of eartips
  • Angled ear hooks
  • Cleaning tool
  • Cable clip
  • Carrying case
  • User guide and driver downloads card
  • Certificate of Authenticity card
  • Audeze LCD-i3 earphones

Build and design

The Audeze LCD-i3 earphones, similar to the iSINE LX and iSINE20, come packaged in a hard plastic box that looks extremely premium due to its textured design. When unfolded, the earphones sit neatly in a dedicated cavity at the top of the box, while the bottom holds a carrying case with the plethora of goodies we mentioned above.

The wide array of angled ear hooks and eartips of different sizes ensure that you get a good fit. However, despite donning the right size of both, the hooks and eartips, we found the fit to be rather flimsy owing to the weight of these earphones. They felt moderately secure when we were sitting still in one place, but walking about would cause them to loosen and sometimes pop out. So, naturally, these earphones aren’t ideal to use during commuting or walking. Don’t even think about bringing these with you when jogging, or worse, gymming.

The multiple cables allow users to connect them to a wide number of devices easily since they can be used passively via the standard 3.5mm audio cable or the Lightning cable for iPhones, or you could simply connect the Bluetooth module and connect wirelessly. It’s great to have an array of choices, and the price feels more justified due to the variety of connectivity options. Nevertheless, we would have loved it even more if these cables were tangle-free, which is not an unreasonable ask at this price point. The cables come with a standard 2-pin connector at the other end to connect to the IEMs.

The Audeze LCD-i3, as mentioned above, as open-back earphones which basically means that sound does leak both in and out. While sound leaking outside the earphones is still at a manageable level when compared to several open-back headphones, the passive isolation is extremely poor and you will need to be in a relatively quiet area to listen to these efficiently. Office environments, commute in public trains and buses and in general, an outdoor environment are not ideal. The i3 sports a 30mm transducer which utilises a Neodymium N50 magnet. This magnet is housed inside a plastic shell with a semi-glossy finish. A silver aluminium mesh grill sits directly underneath this and the overall look is premium. The design is almost identical to the LCD-i4, while it weighs the same as the iSine 10. The plastic chassis is a good choice since a metal one would have deteriorated the comfort and fit even more.

The nozzle which fits inside the ear is thicker, longer and bigger than traditional IEMs and while it feels rather lightweight in-hand, the weight in-ear is on the higher side when compared to other IEMs. For us, the comfort and fit were rather awkward, as aforementioned, but you may get a different result by using the eartips and hooks. Something we missed sorely was foam tips which we think should have been included at this exorbitant price point. The LCD-i3 juts out of the ear considerably and looks rather odd, but still premium nonetheless.

Features

The lightning cable for iPhones included with the Audeze LCD-i3 has Audeze’s cypher tech which is basically its proprietary DSP. Its DAC converts at 24 bit and it is also compatible with the Audeze DSP app which lets users customise the EQ intricately. You can utilise Audeze’s app to access various premade DSP modes as well. The Lightning cable also has a microphone and in-line controller. The in-line controller allows users to pause/play tracks and control the volume as well.

The Bluetooth module, sporting Bluetooth 5.0 standard, similarly comes with cypher tech and an in-line controller as well. This module supports hi-res audio codecs such as AptX and AptX HD and has a respectable 8-hour long battery life. We managed to squeeze out around 7 hours and 15 minutes at about 60 per cent volume, which isn’t too far off from the company claim.

The analogue 3.5mm connector cable, however, does not include the DSP, so to get the most out of this device and listen to it the way Audeze intends you to, you will have to use an Apple device or the Bluetooth module. We evaluated the i3 with both the 3.5mm cable and the Bluetooth module in this review.

Performance

The Audeze LCD-i3 retrieves the detail in audio exceptionally well. The stock experience, without any of the intriguing levels of tweaking the cypher tech allows you, is flat and will please the most stringent audiophiles. Competitors such as the Campfire Andromeda and the RHA CL2 Planar have a tough time stacking up to the i3 when it comes to speed and drive, especially in the bass. The bass is tight, controlled and sufficiently punchy. Kick drums and bass guitars sound fantastic and the sound is never too jarring to the mids. The lows are extended but not over-extended and a boost in the region around 40kHz provides them with extra liveliness. The separation from the low mids is excellent.

The lower-mids are sometimes a bit too weighty for our liking and female vocals suffer slightly due to this. However, the rest of the frequency range in the mids sounds luscious and forward. They also offer a wealth of detail range. However, in certain Jazz tracks, the mids are a bit weak-sounding. The mids are by-far the weakest element of the Audeze LCD-i3 but they still manage to beat most IEMs out there, which is saying something. It is just not quite as commanding as the excellent reproduction of the lows and highs.

Speaking of the highs, the Audeze LCD-i3 excels here. They extend quite a bit but do not, at any point, sound sibilant or tinny and mostly sound luscious and full. The extended highs make the tracks significantly more dynamic, adding oomph to pop or rock tracks such as Something From Nothing by The Foo Fighters. When listening to Centuries by Fall Out Boy where most IEMs crack at high frequencies or at least sound unappealing, the Audeze LCD-i3 carries the notes with extreme precision without sounding harsh or peaky.

The soundstage, as expected from open-back earphones, is extremely spacious. The width is expansive and so is the height. Imaging is also excellent and on certain tracks such as AKFG’s Blue Train, you will feel a sense of closeness to the instruments which is not found on closed-back earphones. Being open-back has shattered the limitations IEMs usually stumble upon when it comes to the soundstage. The result is a remarkable airy quality which sounds ultra-realistic.

Bottomline

If budget is not an issue for you, the Audeze LCD-i3 are one of the best pair of IEMs you can find on the market today. If you’re an audiophile and mostly listen to music within the confines of your home or studio, these IEMs deliver life-like, balanced sound quality that brings out intricate details and nuances in tracks, unlike traditional BA IEMs. The planar magnetic tech coupled with the open-back design delivers airy, realistic sound which works brilliantly with almost all genres of music. Priced at Rs 79,900, these IEMs are certainly on the expensive side, but they are completely worth every rupee and then some.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Protests Pak Map, Exits Meet

Ajit Doval, team walked out of Shanghai Cooperation Organization over doctored map by Pak (File)

New Delhi:

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and the Indian team walked out a meet of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization hosted by Russia after Pakistan used a doctored map as a background for its representative. The map showed Indian territories as part of Pakistan. The Indian side's move was a protest against Pakistan's blatant violation of norms, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

Asked about the issue, ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said in a statement: "The Pakistani NSA deliberately projected a fictitious map that Pakistan has recently been propagating. This was in blatant disregard to the advisory by the host (Russia) against it and in violation of the norms of the meeting."

After consultation with the host, the Indian side left the meeting in protest at that juncture, the statement added.

"As was to be expected, Pakistan then went on to present a misleading view of this meeting," the statement further read.

The map, issued by Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 4, claims territories of India - Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Sir Creek in Gujarat -- as parts of Pakistan. India had rubbished it as an "exercise in political absurdity" with no legal validity.

Government sources said Islamabad's use of the fictitious map, depicting sovereign Indian territories as part of Pakistan, is a blatant violation of the SCO Charter. It is also against all its established norms of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of SCO Member States.

India, sources said, has issued strong objection to the use of this illegal map by Pakistan.

The Russian side, as the Chair, had tried very hard to persuade Pakistan not to do so. Russia does not support what Pakistan has done and hopes that Pakistan's provocative act will not affect India's participation in SCO, sources said.

Over the last year, Pakistan has been attempting to highlight Kashmir at most international forums. But showing such a map in violation of protocol became possible as the meeting was virtual owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Appearances Matter in Jaguar’s ’21 F-Pace | WardsAuto

In the U.S., 2021 Jaguar F-Pace will come in four trim configurations with three powertrain options.

Appearances Matter in Jaguar’s ’21 F-Pace

Jaguar hopes you like what the designers have done here, as the F-Pace's new design is setting up a blueprint for future models.

When Jaguar started updating the new F-Pace, it didn't want to make the average new model year changes. Instead, with a completely new interior and a few exterior upgrades, the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace is far more than a midcycle refresh, says Jaguar design director Julian Thomson.

"It's been great for our team to have the opportunity to revisit these cars and go back and refine them and make them better," he says, speaking about both the new F-Pace and the upcoming 2021 XF, which will be unveiled later this month. “We’ve gone over the car with a fine-tooth comb and made every single thing better.”

Thomson says the ’21 F-Pace has a focus on technology, but is also an authentic, luxury Jaguar vehicle. It also will be Jaguar’s first plug-in hybrid, but only in Europe.

In the U.S., the ’21 Jaguar F-Pace will come in four trim configurations with three powertrain options, all using an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 250 and S 250 versions each use a 2.0L turbocharged gasoline 4-cyl. that produces 246 hp.

The S 340 and R-Dynamic S 400 are mild hybrids and both use a 3.0L gasoline 6-cyl. that produces 335 hp in the S 340 and 395 hp in the R-Dynamic S 400.

Jaguar2021 Jaguar F-PACE interior.jpg

The mild hybrids store regenerative braking energy in a 48V lithium-ion battery pack and can use it for acceleration, with the R-Dynamic S 400 hitting 60 mph (97 km/h) from zero in exactly 5 seconds, Jaguar says.

It’s the updated looks, though, where Jaguar designers spent lots of time making sure the ’21 F-Pace got what it deserved, with particular focus on the lighting.

Up front, the “Double J Blade” daytime running lights and slim, LED quad headlights accentuate an enlarged grille with a can't-miss-it logo in red. The rear lights (pictured below) use Jaguar's double chicane graphic previously seen on the all-electric I-Pace.

Aside from the lights, the new F-Pace's hood and sides have been updated, and the R-Dynamic version stands even further apart with enhanced performance looks.

Jaguar2021 Jaguar F-PACE exterior rear.jpg

Inside, Jaguar has put a premium on keeping things calm and clean. Ambient lighting is almost a given in upscale cars these days, and the F-Pace includes both configurable subdued lights as well as warm white courtesy lighting in "key areas."

Drivers will gain information from the 12.3-in. (31-cm) interactive driver display behind the steering wheel (pictured below).

Jaguar also has two ways to keep the outside, well, outside thanks to active road noise cancellation and an optional PM 2.5 filter to keep what the EPA calls "fine inhalable particles" (particulate matter that's less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter) out of your lungs.

Jaguar hopes you like what the designers have done here, as the F-Pace's new design is setting up a blueprint for future models.

Jaguar also provides a Pivi Pro infotainment system and 14-speaker Meridian sound system to keep you entertained. Like other automakers – see the Polestar 2, with its Android Automotive OS – Jaguar is trying to not just integrate smartphones with the car (and the F-Pace can connect to two phones at once), but also to make the car’s built-in system feel more like your phone.

Jaguar2021 Jaguar F-PACE steering wheel.jpg

Jaguar says Pivi Pro’s flat menu structure is intuitive, putting favorite features either on the 11.4-in. (29-cm) curved-glass home screen or just one click away, with “most other features” accessible by two clicks.

Jaguar’s Electronic Vehicle Architecture, now in its second generation, allows for over-the-air updates and even powers the dual-sim Pivi Pro with a dedicated energy source so that it turns on when you open the door and before you sit down in the driver's seat.

The ’21 F-Pace has plenty of driver-assistance and safety technologies, with blindspot and rear traffic monitors as standard features. An optional Clear Exit Monitor watches for cars or cyclists approaching from the rear and will warn occupants when they start to open the door.

An updated smart wearable device called the Activity Key can be used to access the new F-Pace even without the key fob.

Details on price and on-sale date will be announced later.

The upcoming smartwatches are expected to have SpO2 and stress detection features. Amazfit GTR 2 and GTS 2 are expected to be similar to their predecessors but have more advanced features.

Amazfit shared an invite poster announcing the upcoming launch, and shared photos of the soon-to-be-launched Amazfit GTR 2 and Amazfit GTS 2. Amazfit teased that the smartwatches may boast of SpO2 features.

Huami founder Wang Huang commented on the challenges faced while designing Amazfit GTR 2 and GTS 2. He said that while it was difficult to create a classic, it was even harder to surpass one. Huang said that the company focused on things such as the stylish appearance of the watch, the long battery life, and the health features.

As per a teaser poster shared by Huami on Weibo, The Amazfit GTR 2 has a round face and a narrower dial bezel than its predecessor. Amazfit GTR 2 that sports a classic look is expected to exceed its predecessor on the battery front. The Amazfit GTR comes with a 410mAh battery that can last up to 74 days in basic watch mood.

The Huami Amazfit GTS 2, meanwhile, has a square-shaped design, and looks slimmer than its predecessor. The Amazfit GTS has a battery life of 14 days and a 1.65-inch (348x442 pixels) AMOLED display with a curved screen.

Wang Huang said that the company faced challenges while designing the second generation smartwatches. It wanted to make the appearance of the Amazfit GTR 2 and GTS 2 more stunning, improve on the health functions and subtract the user's learning costs while adding on additional functions.

Amazfit GTR 2 and Amazfit GTS 3 will be launched on September 22 at 2pm CST Asia (11:30 am IST).

Delhi Coronavirus: High Court Tells Delhi Government To Increase RT/PCR Testing Capacity

Increase RT/PCR Testing Capacity: High Court To Delhi Government

The high court asked an expert committee, set by the Lieutenant Governor (LG), to convene a meeting on priority basis to consider the extent to which capacity of testing by RT/PCR should be ramped up.

Increase RT/PCR Testing Capacity: High Court To Delhi Government

At present, the sanctioned strength of conducting RT/PCR is 14,000 per day in Delhi.

New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court Wednesday suggested that the AAP government increase the RT/PCR test capacity to the maximum possible to detect COVID-19 infection, as Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) were only 60 per cent accurate.

The high court asked an expert committee, set by the Lieutenant Governor (LG), to convene a meeting on priority basis to consider the extent to which capacity of testing by RT/PCR should be ramped up.

At present, the sanctioned strength of conducting RT/PCR is 14,000 per day in Delhi.

The high court expressed concern over continuous rise in COVID-19 cases, with nearly 4,500 new infections reported on Tuesday.

"Having regard to the fact that results of RAT are 60 per cent accurate, leaving grave doubt about infection in those who are asymptomatic, we are of the firm view that RT/PCR should be the way forward," said a bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Subramonium Prasad.

"In our opinion, Delhi government ought to focus on shoring up the capacity of testing through RT/PCR so that testing is increased through RT/PCR as much as possible," it said.

RT/PCR, short for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, is a laboratory technique widely used in the diagnosis of genetic diseases and to measure gene expression in research.

The court directed the Delhi government to file a status report along with a report of the committee in this regard and listed the matter for further hearing on September 30.

The bench also noted that in the week from September 8 to 15, the testing done through RT/PCR was less than one fourth of the total number of tests and rest was done by the RAT process.

It asked the Delhi government to place on record before the next date of hearing, the results of the third sero-survey conducted by it in September along with the comparison report with the previous two surveys.

The court was informed that out of 435 mohalla clinics in Delhi, 400 were functional and 50-60 of them were conducting COVID-19 testing after completing their OPDs.

The bench said it was of the view that not only mohalla clinics, but community centres shall also be roped in for setting up testing facilities as cases of COVID-19 are shooting up on a daily basis and on Tuesday 4,473 fresh cases have come up in Delhi, taking the tally to more than 2.25 lakh.

During the hearing, Delhi government counsel Satyakam assured the court that the authorities will consider increasing testing through RT/PCR but also defended its process of conducting more RAT saying it gives quick results.

The court said as RAT mostly gives false negative reports, why the government should wait for it and then go to the next level of RT/PCR. Instead, it should shore up to RT/PCR capacity.

Satyakam said the government has a guideline which provides for the way they have to proceed and assured the court that they are not falling short of RT/PCR capacity and have enough capacity.

The court suggested that the testing by RT/PCR should be at least 50 per cent of the total testing numbers.

The Delhi government counsel claimed that the testing done in the city was the best in the country and they were doing the maximum number of tests.

To this, the high court said, "Modesty is not your virtue. To say you are the best should come from the residents of the city and not from the state itself."

The bench observed, "This is for sure that there is no cure for this disease till the vaccine comes. We have to ensure that the person who has this infection does not spread it further."

In pursuance to the court's September 8 direction, the Delhi government has now issued a notification that doctor's prescription is not mandatory for those voluntarily going for RT/PCR test to detect COVID-19 infection in the national capital.

People need to carry Aadhaar card for Delhi address proof and fill a form as prescribed by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for COVID-19 testing, it said.

Before this, it was mandatory for a person to have a doctor's prescription or symptoms to get tested for the virus.

In pursuance to the court''s order, the Delhi government has also set up COVID-19 testing camps at Inter-State Bus terminals (ISBT) Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan and Kashmiri Gate and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station and New Delhi Railway Station.

The court was hearing a PIL by advocate Rakesh Malhotra seeking increasing the COVID-19 testing numbers in the national capital and getting speedy results.

Punjab Ally Opposes Centre On New Farm Bills, Says Against "Annadata"

The Shirmoani Akali Dal opposed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020, saying that as a party of the farmer, it cannot support anything which goes against the interest of the "annadaata (food provider)" in the country, especially in Punjab.

"These ordinances are affecting Punjab the most," Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said.

Chandigarh:

Facing heat from farmers in Punjab, the Shiromani Akali Dal, an ally of the ruling BJP in the centre, said it was not was consulted party over farm-related ordinances which were cleared by the union cabinet recently and the corresponding bills wich were tabled in Lok Sabha on Monday.

"The government should have consulted parties like the SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) which is a party of farmers and the poor before bringing ordinances. We were not asked about this ordinance. When the ordinance was brought in the cabinet, our representative in the cabinet raised queries. These ordinances are affecting Punjab the most. Farmers of Punjab did not get their answers," Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Tuesday.

While the party had earlier supported the centre's decision, the change in position came after a meeting of the Akali Dal's core committee last Saturday, when the party had appealed to the centre not to present the three ordinances for approval in parliament until reservations of farmers are addressed.

Farmers in Punjab and Haryana have been agitating against three agriculture-related ordinances brought on June 5 - The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which seeks to deregulate food items, including cereals, pulses and onion.

The Akali Dal on Tuesday opposed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020, saying that as a party of the farmer, it cannot support anything which goes against the interest of the "annadaata (food provider)" in the country, especially in Punjab.

The Akali Dal and Punjab's ruling Congress are trying to outdo each other in order win over farmers by opposing the ordinances.

"SAD is essentially an organisation of farmers. Every Akali is a farmer and every farmer is an Akali at heart. The party has always championed the cause of the farmers and has made supreme sacrifices to safeguard their interests. That legacy cannot and will not be compromised or diluted, no matter what price we have to pay," Sukhbit Singh Badal said in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, Akali Dal attacked Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and asked him to desist from "repeatedly lying and trying to deceive Punjabis through mischievous statements".

Senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia said Amarinder Singh had been exposed on the floor of the Lok Sabha with a Union Minister pointing out that he was part of the consultative process which led to the framing of the central ordinances on agriculture. "The cat is out of the bag. It is now clear that you and your government supported the Agricultural Ordinances but are now trying to lie your way out through this issue as you have done repeatedly in the past also. No amount of denials can wash the stain of selling the interests of the farmers of the State which will haunt you always," he said in a statement.

Mr Majithia also condemned the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for "running away like cowards to avoid voting" against the amendments proposed in the Essential Commodities Act, leaving it to the Akali Dal to vote against the bill.

'I wish to take an informed risk': Anwar Ali Desperate to Continue Football Career Despite Heart Condition

Anwar Ali

Anwar Ali

Anwar Ali is desperate to continue playing football and said if AIFF bans him due to his heart condition, it would be a 'death sentence' for him anyway.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:42 PM IST

Former Mumbai City, Indian Arrows and FIFA U-17 World Cup team defender Anwar Ali is at crossroads today. He wants to continue playing for he says "football is the only thing I know" but his heart condition has left his future in the hands of All India Football Federation (AIFF). The federation's medical committee is currently deciding whether or not Anwar should be allowed to play.

Just a year ago, Anwar had signed a lucrative contract with Mumbai City FC and before that, he was a prominent figure in the Indian Arrows team. However, his world turned upside down last year when he was diagnosed with his congenital heart condition -- an extremely rare form of the already uncommon Hypercardio Myopathy (HCM). He took off to France for treatment and now that he is back, he wants to play again.

He signed with Kolkata club Mohammedan Sporting to play the I-League second division but he cannot do that until and unless he is given a green signal from the AIFF.

"Article 21 of the Indian Constitution guarantees me the right to earn a livelihood for myself. If I wish to take an informed risk and am ready to monitor my condition with the help of medical experts, then it is ultimately my choice, whether I wish to take the risk of playing football professionally.

"If any club feels that they do not wish to take the risk to play me, they will not sign me, but if I am willing and my club is willing and I am ready to take necessary precautions then I do not see how my right to earn my bread and butter can be taken away from me," Anwar wrote in a detailed letter running into 57 pages - with documentary evidences and medical reports - to the AIFF on Tuesday, as stated by Times of India.

The news report states that before receiving Anwar's letter, the medical committee had "verbally" agreed that the youngster should not be allowed to play but they delayed the decision after receiving his letter and audio transcripts of Anwar's appointment with Dr F. Carre, head of sports medicine at CHU Rennes in France.

Anwar grew up grazing cattle in a small dairy farm - one that his father owns in Adampur, Punjab. He feels if not for football, he would be grazing cattle today as well. "Being a large family and me being the only earning member, it is very difficult for us to make ends meet even when I am earning as a professional footballer," Anwar further said.

If Anwar takes the field with his heart condition, there is always going to be a risk of a cardiac arrest on field, which may even lead to his death. But Anwar said that AIFF's ban would be a "a death sentence" anyway.

"If AIFF bans me, I'll be forced to play in low level tournaments like Khep in Kolkata to make ends meet. There are no medical facilities in these tournaments, so the chances of me dying on the field will be much higher. Your disqualification of me will be a death sentence for me and my family. I beg you to let me play," said Anwar.

Anwar, who is unhappy with the fact that he has not been given a personal hearing with the medical committee, pointed out how AIFF had not intervened in situation with some footballers in a similar situation in the past like Dipendu Biswas and Anwar Ali Senior's heart attack on the field while with East Bengal..

"There is more risk of me and my family dying from hunger if my only earning source is taken from me, than there is of me dying from Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) on the field while playing," Anwar said.

More Than Warning, 'Intense' Firing Between India & China Led to 100-200 Shots Before Moscow Pact

Top government sources told News18 that India and China exchanged fire twice at LAC. The first round of firing took place in Chushul sub sector on September 7. These were said to be warning shots. The second round of firing occurred on September 8 at North Bank — 'this was serious'.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 9:39 AM IST

Two days before External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi reached an agreement in Moscow, heightened tensions along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh had led Indian and Chinese troops to open fire on the north bank of Pangong Tso. While the Indian troops had moved towards the western side of Finger 3, the Chinese army had moved to occupy the area between Finger 3 and 4. The step by both the countries led to firing of "100 to 200 shots" in the air as the troops came 300 metre close to each other.

A report by Indian Express quoted a top government officer, aware of the details, as saying: "100 to 200 shots were fired in the air by both sides on the ridgeline where Finger 3 and Finger 4 merge before moving north as one ridge."

"In the first week of September, there was a lot of movement" on both the north and south banks of Pangong Tso, the officer was quoted as saying, mentioning "multiple" incidents of firing in the region in the first week of September.

Top government sources told News18 that India and China exchanged fire twice at LAC. The first round of firing took place in Chushul sub-sector on September 7. These were said to be warning shots. The second round of firing occurred on September 8 at North Bank — "this was serious". At least 100 rounds were fired, sources said.

The IE report stated that till date, neither side has officially said anything about the firing on the north bank which took place after the Chushul incident, and was bigger in scale.

The situation, however, has since calmed down, the officer was quoted. "Now things have cooled down because of the talks between our Defence Minister and their Defence Minister and the Foreign Ministers. The focus has shifted towards dialogue," he said.

The two sides have agreed to hold another round of talks between the Corps Commanders though the date is still to be decided. The officer indicated that this time, the talks may include an official from the Ministry of External Affairs, the report stated.

The officer was further quoted as saying that before India occupied the heights along the LAC in the Chushul sub-sector, China was in a position of advantage, and at the discussions at the military and diplomatic levels, "they were trying to bargain for time" as "at that particular stage they were better off" and "they had no reason to negotiate".

On current positions on the Fingers on the north bank, the officer was quoted as saying that the Indian soldiers were above the Chinese deployment on Finger 4.

Chinese troops, he said, are "trying to go further up" but "we are in a slightly better position, there is a limit to how much you can keep jockeying" on that ridgeline, and that the Chinese would not be able to sustain themselves at a point higher on the ridge than where the Indian soldiers are.

As Some U.S. College Students Party, Others Blow The Whistle

Some U.S. college students are doing the onceimprobable: blowing the whistle on classmates who break rules aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus.

Some U.S. college students are doing the once-improbable: blowing the whistle on classmates who break rules aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus.

At the University of Missouri, one senior is posting photos and videos on a “University of Misery” Twitter account that shows students gathered in large groups at pools, outside bars and other places – few of them wearing masks.

The university has a form on its website where violations of the school’s COVID-19 guidelines can be anonymously reported, but posting on Twitter “adds a different level of accountability,” said the student.

“When it’s up there publicly and people are retweeting it, and the university’s getting tagged over and over – then they have to reply,” said the student, who sometimes posts videos and photos of non-compliance sent by other students and asked for anonymity to avoid backlash.

Christian Basi, spokesman for the University of Missouri, which has about 30,000 students, said there has been good compliance on campus during daytime hours but problems arise once students leave campus.

“Where we’re seeing our issues have been off campus, when individuals go home to their private residences,” Basi said.

The University of Missouri on Tuesday said in a statement that it had expelled two students and suspended three following “flagrant violations” of the school’s coronavirus-related rules.

The county where the school is located saw a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in August and early September, according to data on the city of Columbia’s website.

To avoid shaming individuals, the student who runs the University of Misery account has sent content that shows smaller groups of people violating COVID-19 guidelines to the vice chancellor for student affairs rather than posting it online.

Still, the student has faced pushback from other students.

In one instance, the student said they heard from a sorority within an hour of posting a video of some of its members lined up outside of a bar, many of them not wearing masks.

“‘This needs to be deleted now. We’re dealing with this internally. This does not need to be up online,'” the student said the message read.

‘LUDICROUS’ EXPECTATIONS

Some schools like the University of Miami are actually paying students to enforce COVID-19 rules.

At Miami, 75 “public health ambassadors” are making $10 an hour to walk around campus and make sure that people wear masks and socially distance. Serious infractions can be flagged to university administrators.

Austin Pert, an ambassador and Miami senior, said that people generally comply with his requests. But Pert acknowledged the program has limitations: most violations do not take place during the day on university grounds.

“If people want to flout the rules and put social distancing aside for a night to go party, it’s not happening on campus,” Pert said.

Critics say having in-person learning during a pandemic was a mistake to begin with.

“The notion that this population will comply with social distancing and masking requirements is just ludicrous,” said Ryan Craig, a higher education investor and consultant. “These are college students. They are going to do what they want to do.”

At Northeastern University in Boston, administrators came across an Instagram poll last month in which more than 100 incoming freshman indicated that they planned to party. After the student running the account voluntarily turned over the identities of respondents, they received a letter warning that partying could result in punishment up to expulsion, a university spokeswoman said.

Nearby Boston University has received about 125 anonymous tips about violations, ranging from partying to breaking quarantine. Most have come from students rather than faculty and staff, Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said.

Ed Kellerman, a BU senior, said he would not hesitate to anonymously report a party, calling it a matter of “life or death” for Boston residents near campus.

Kellerman said reporting parties also increases the odds of completing the academic year on campus.

“We’re all very pro-snitch right now,” Kellerman said. “No one wants to get sent home.”
