PumPumPum: India's first Used Car Leasing platform

PumPumPum is a startup which has launched India's first used car leasing platform. Initially, the service has been launched in Delhi-NCR but the company has plans to expand to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.

Monthly subscriptions range from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. Just like any leasing service, the payment includes insurance, maintenance and an OBD-device annual subscription fee.

Customers can lease a vehicle for 6-24 months. The minimum lock-in period depends on the car and the period for which it is subscribed. If customers wish to return the car before the lock-in period ends, they have to pay for the remaining lock-in period.

There is also a limit on how much the leased vehicles can be driven during a month. The monthly limit is 1,500 km, beyond which the customers will be charged depending on the type of vehicle. The additional charge for hatchbacks to SUVs range from Rs. 8 per km to Rs. 15 per km. The kilometers will accumulate on a pro-rata basis for the period of subscription.

According to the company, the used cars that are offered on lease undergo a 200-point inspection. All the cars are scratch-free and dent-less. The cars have an OBD device which captures customer driving behaviour & the car's health parameters.

Methanol Holdings can challenge DPP, police on Clico probe

Methanol Holdings can challenge DPP, police on Clico probe

MHTL at night: Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Ltd's AUM plant at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. - Jeff K Mayers

ENERGY giant Methanol Holdings Trinidad Ltd (MTHL), two other energy companies and several of their principals can now challenge the use of a local accounting firm in investigations arising out of the decade-old collapse of Clico.

On Tuesday, Justice Nadia Kangaloo ruled that the application of MTHL, Process Energy, Consolidated Energy (Trinidad) Ltd, and their principals, against a decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the police to use accounting firm Deloitte in investigations was an exceptional case.

It is only in exceptional cases that decisions of the DPP are not amenable to judicial review. The judge provided several authorities to support her ruling to grant leave.

Tuesday’s hearing was heard virtually. The local energy firms and their principals are represented by Lord David Pannick, QC, and Lee Merry. Pannick, who was admitted to practice in July for the case and any case which arise out of it, made his submissions from London.

The parties are seeking several declarations that the decision of the DPP and the commissioner to continue to engage Deloitte for criminal investigation was unreasonable and a breach of natural justice, among other things. They also want a declaration that the conduct of the DPP trespassedon the police’s function and compromised essential elements of the judicial process.

Initially the parties sought an injunction to restrain the DPP and the top cop from continuing to use the accounting firm, but admitted in the application in March that in response to their concerns, it was indicated that investigators would not interview witnesses with Deloitte’s participation.

However, the parties noted that if an attempt is made to access certain documents police seized in a raid of Methanol Holdings' offices last year, they will make an urgent application for interim relief.

From May 2-July 12, 2019, police searched MHTL’s offices at Atlantic Avenue, Pt Lisas. In all, 82 boxes of documents were taken over the two-month period and an additional 78 boxes were taken from an off-site storage unit.

The parties’ complaint is grounded on their contention that it was recently disclosed that the DPP chose, at the start of the investigation, to seek expert opinion from a senior partner at Deloitte.

However, the energy firms claim that the senior partner has appeared in arbitral and civil proceedings and given evidence against them on the same issue before the DPP for his consideration and, as a result, the accounting firm is conflicted.

They also complain that the DPP has employed consultants who do not have the relevant criminal investigation experience and are largely IT experts and forensic accountants, rather than criminal investigators.

Noting that the investigation has been running for ten years, the parties say the use of external consultants may, in large part, explain why the investigation has taken so long.

They said when these flaws became apparent, they wrote to the DPP and the commission inviting them to remove the accounting firm from their investigative team, but up to December 2019, they declined to do so.

They are also challenging the role the DPP has played, saying the role of a prosecutor must be separate and distinct from that of an investigator.

“The erosion of the dividing line between prosecutor and investigator has the potential to lead to unfairness in the investigation and any subsequent trial,” they argued

In September 2010, the reports and files on the investigation into the collapse of Clico were passed to the DPP and in November 2010, a commission of enquiry was established to look into what led to the collapse.

During the enquiry, the DPP wrote to Sir Anthony Colman, the lone commissioner, notifying him that a criminal investigation had been launched into the conduct of individuals and companies involved in the collapse.

In 2016, the Colman commission report was also sent to the DPP.

Earlier this year, Police Commissioner Gary Griffith said the Clico investigation was one of several ongoing high-profile probes.

Representing the DPP was Senior Counsel Ian Benjamin.

Japan's Yoshihide Suga Formally Elected As New Prime Minister

Japan PM Yoshihide Suga is expected to announce his cabinet later today.

Tokyo:

Japan's parliament on Wednesday elected Yoshihide Suga prime minister, with the former chief cabinet secretary expected to stick closely to policies championed by Shinzo Abe during his record-breaking tenure.

"According to the results, our house has decided to name Yoshihide Suga prime minister," lower house speaker Tadamori Oshima told parliament after the votes were counted.

Suga, 71, won an easy victory, taking 314 votes of 462 valid ballots cast in the lower house of parliament, where his ruling Liberal Democratic Party holds a commanding majority with its coalition partner.

He bowed deeply as lawmakers applauded following the announcement, but made no immediate comment.

He is expected to announce his cabinet later Wednesday, with local media reporting he will retain a number of ministers from Abe's government.

Suga has said he will prioritise keeping coronavirus infections under control and kickstarting Japan's economy, and has promised to continue Abe's key policy programmes.

Players Unsure About Resumption of International Calender Causing Lag in Training: Pullela Gopichand

Pullela Gopichand said the pandemic has affected the players in different ways and some of them have made good use of their time.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:09 PM IST

With the international badminton calendar still not cast in stone amid postponements and rescheduling, India coach Pullela Gopichand on Wednesday said there is a slight "lag from the players' side" to start training.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) was forced to postpone the Thomas and Uber Cup after multiple teams pulled out due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament was supposed to mark the resumption of international badminton after it came to a halt in March because of the dreaded virus.

The world body also cancelled the Denmark Masters 2020 scheduled from October 20 to 25.

"I believe our players are not trusting the fact that our badminton calendar is going to start very soon," Gopichand said during a webinar organised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

"So there is a bit of a lag from the players' side to get together and train," he added.

Recently, Indian shuttlers had refused to comply with Sports Authority of India's quarantine norms, leading to the cancellation of a training camp for Thomas and Uber Cup.

However, Gopichand feels lack of training is not a concern as players will get back to work once they start competing at the international events.

"In all probability the Danish Open will happen and once it starts the players will work more," he said.

Gopichand said the pandemic has affected the players in different ways and some of them have made good use of their time.

"For a few of the players, it's been good because they are making good use of the pandemic, I won't say for all as some of the players resuming training are not in the best shape which they could be."

Sporting activites across the world have started again, big events like the US Open tennis, Formula 1 races, international football and cricket have successfully been conducted in the safety of bio-secure bubbles.

"First two months, maybe it was rest, recovery, the next two three were about starting practice but now it's time to start looking at preparing for the future," he said.

Gopichand, who took over the reigns of Indian badminton in 2006, said the country must adapt to the situation and starting a league, in which top players compete with each other in bio bubbles, could be a solution to staying at par with international athletes.

"Sport across the world has started and it means that we need to start as well because we don't want to be left behind. It means that we need to adapt because in a country like ours, to have the same kind of tournaments we used to have, may not be possible.

"But a league among top players, that is possible. So, if you are willing to quickly divide the players in our country as per their levels and start competing, it is a much faster way of creating those bubbles.

"The bubble and other sports have shown that it is possible to ensure people can compete and the players are wanting to compete," Gopichand added.

The 46-year-old said the break from the game is bound to affect the juniors more as the Olympic-bound players will be able to capitalise on this extra time to prepare for the 2021 Games.

"My concern is not for Olympic-bound but under-13, 14 or 19-year-olds. A six-eight month break is a break in momentum. So my concern is more for them. For Olympic-bound players, they will just take the time to prepare better for the Olympics."

AFI President Adille Sumariwalla echoed Gopichand's views on the Olympic-bound.

"The postponement of a year has probably helped us in a way. Now they'll get one more year of training. I think we will do better," he said.

Verdict

The Sony A9 offers great performance in terms of maximum burst speed and AF tracking. The camera, despite its dual SD card slots, does not offer card rollover and limits only one slot to UHS compliance. For the price, the camera is an impressive camera, but the fast frame rate is limited to the electronic shutter only.

Sony Alpha A9 detailed review

Sony has launched the A9 last year in India, a camera that heralded the final evolution of the mirrorless camera. One after the other, Sony has cracked the formula for reliable image quality, high resolution and impressive film capture, and now, with the A9, they are treading the sports camera territory. Boasting the capability of shooting up to 20 frames per second (RAW) and a focus system that the company claims is perfectly suited for wildlife and sports photographers. But does the A9 deliver on all those accounts? Let’s find out.

What’s in the Box

The Sony A9 ships with a very minimal set of accessories. You get the new NP-FZ100 battery along with a charger. There’s also a Sony A9 branded strap in the box which is a little more premium in comparison to the straps you would normally get with other Sony mirrorless cameras. There’s a host of paperwork like warranty cards and user manual as well.

Specifications

Resolution: 24 Megapixel
ISO Range: 100-51200 (expandable to 204800)
Image Stabilisation: Sensor shift, 5-axis
Focus Points: 693
Continuous Drive: 20fps (electronic shutter) and 5fps (mechanical shutter)
Video: 4K @ 30fps, 1080p @ 120fps
Storage: Dual SD Cards, 1 slot UHS compliant
Weather Sealing: Yes

Build and Design

The Sony A9 was the first Sony mirrorless camera to bring a radical design shift from the second generation A7 cameras. The company added a joystick for manoeuvring focus points (or zones) which adds a whole new level of convenience. The dial arrangement has also significantly improved, with the top left plate housing the drive modes and metering dial. On the right of the flash hot-shoe lies the mode dial. Both dials feature locks to prevent accidental changes. Probably one of the most notable changes is the position of the record button, which has moved to the bottom right corner of the viewfinder, a spot where the thumb can reach very naturally. The grip on the Sony A9 is also deeper than that on the previous Sony mirrorless cameras, which is good for those who have larger hands.

A deeper grip makes using the Sony Alpha A9 much easier than its predecessors

On the right side of the grip, you will find a latch which when opened, reveals the dual SD Card slots. There is the presence of a rubber seal on the latch, ensuring the compartment stays water-tight. Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t really say just what amount of weather sealing has gone into the A9, but given that it is competing with the likes of the Canon 1Dx and the Nikon D5, we expect the weather sealing to be top-notch.

Overall, the build quality and the ergonomics of the Sony A9 make it a far easier camera to use compared to anything that Sony has put out before this. The new joystick along with the additional dials on the left make operating the camera very easy. If you want to make things even easier, you could always just use the touchscreen for operating the camera.

The joystick on the back makes moving the AF points around a breeze

Autofocus Performance

The AF system on the Sony A9 boasts of 693 focus points courtesy a new phase detect system. The AF system provides for 93 percent of the frame coverage. The focus system makes 60AF/AE calculations per second, making it a whole 25 percent faster than the Sony A7 Mark II. The AF System can either be set to function in zones of different sizes or individual AF points, which are also available in various sizes. Depending on what you’re shooting, the AF system can also be tailored to emphasize on focus speed or accuracy. You can tweak the settings according to your needs, but for the most part, the AF system manages to perform really well. The ideal way to test the A9’s performance was to put it through a test of shooting far moving subjects so that’s what we did.

Shooting Performance

Burst mode and autofocus need to work hand-in-hand if you want the resulting images to be useful. There’s no real advantage to having a blazing fast AF system if the camera can’t capture enough frames that account for the movement and similarly, a really fast burst mode won’t do much if the AF system can’t track the fast-moving subject. The A9 offers a decent balance between the two, offering a maximum burst rate of 20 fps when using the electronic shutter. The mechanical shutter, unfortunately, has a top speed of 5fps. Additionally, shooting with the electronic shutter allows you to shoot as fast as 1/32000 of a second, but it isn’t advisable to shoot at such high speeds, especially if the subject is lit with artificial light. All this is enabled thanks to a novel 24 megapixel full frame sensor which features a DRAM layer which allows for a faster sensor readout.

The new 24 megapixel full-frame sensor with integrated DRAM allows for the 20fps burst mode

We tested the camera using a variety of subjects, including a dancer and yours truly on a mountain bike. The idea was to test the camera’s ability to track and shoot the subjects and also gauge how many out of focus shots we ended up with. We shot over 3000 frames between the two conditions and walked away with roughly 90 percent usable frames.  The camera was loaded with a SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 32GB card in Slot 1 and a SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 64GB card in slot 2. Both are high-speed cards. It was interesting to note that after some 40 minutes of shooting at the maximum burst rate, the 32GB card was full and the camera did not switch over the second card. After tinkering around in the menu, it was discovered that for some reason, a roll-over option is missing from the camera menu.

The tracking on the camera was spot on. The sequence with our dancer friend had only 2 shots out of focus for a sequence of 20. We shot 6 such sequences and had a small variability, but all in all, it was still very impressive. Similarly, while riding the mountain bike down slopes fast, the A9 manages to track the subject effectively. While tracking subjects moving from left to right (or vice versa) was naturally good, we were also very impressed with the A9’s ability to track subjects moving at a considerable speed in the Z-axis.

Tracking a dancer mid-flight? No problem!

Tracking fast moving action towards the camera? No Problem!

Great dynamic range and colours

AF works great even in low light

You can see the collection of image samples in our Flickr Gallery.

For day-to-day use, the Sony A9 is in all honesty overkill. The Sony A9 is best suited for those who shoot sports or wildlife and need the speed to keep up with their subjects. Of course, even a hobbyist could want to go for the A9 and we wouldn’t discourage doing so. This camera will last you a very long time, especially seeing how Sony is using a very impressive sensor, one which is capable of producing clean images all the way up to ISO 16,000.

Bottomline

The Sony A9 is a huge leap towards bridging the performance gap between the mirrorless and DSLR form-factors. DSLRs like the Canon 1Dx and the Nikon D5 still maintain some superiority with their ability to shoot north of 12 frames per second despite a mechanical shutter. The ergonomics, however, are top notch and the button layout makes accessing all essential features a breeze. However, at an MRP of Rs 3,34990, it is hard to say that this is the best camera for everyone. However, this is the best camera for those who seek the combination or speed, accuracy and reliability in a far more portable package than the 1Dx or the D5.

Four Teas That May Help Boost Your Immunity This Monsoon

Monsoons are the time to indulge in a piping hot cup of tea.

There is something special about the monsoon season. The weather is a breathe of fresh air and brings a sigh of relief from the scorching heat. There are moments when the sky turns dark, a flash of lightning illuminates the sky, followed by beautiful rains. This is the season when you let your guards down and indulge in some decadant snacks, from piping hot samosas and bread pakodas to delicious gulab jamun - it's only once is what we tell our conscience.

Every season comes with its own dietary demands. You might want to tweak your meals with the change in seasons to accommodate more seasonal produce, according to a particular season. Monsoon is a season when your immunity may take a hit as you're likely to be more exposed to germs resulting in flu, viral fever etc. According to various nutritionists, the drop in temperature slows down your metabolism rate. During monsoon, we should consume antioxidant-rich foods which keep infections away.

Here We Bring You A List Of Four Teas That You Must Have To Boost Your Immunity:

1. Masala Chai

Masala chai is a fine blend of Assam CTC tea blended with Indian spices. While the spices add flavour to your tea, they also have a host of health benefits. Various spices are blended into Masala Chai. The classic traditional Indian Masala Chai is made using six spices - Cardamom, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Pepper, Cloves and Ginger. Each spice has its own individual health properties; for example, Cardamom is good for the stomach, Cinnamon controls blood sugar levels, Ginger is good for the throat, Pepper has anti-inflammatory properties and Star Anise fights viruses and flu. Tea, of course, is loaded with antioxidants, which protect your body, when it combines with spices the goodness of tea doubles. So binge on Masala Chai to keep your body warm and metabolism in check.

2. Cinnamon Green Tea

This is a traditional blend and uses green tea as a base; it is blended with Cinnamon, also known as 'Dlachini'. The ancient spice has prized medicinal properties. It is rich in antioxidants, helps improve the absorption of insulin in the body; it reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and has anti-inflammatory properties. So when you have a sugar craving, have a cup of Cinnamon Green tea to curb the urge.

3. Peppermint Green Tea

Peppermint is used in toothpaste, chewing gum and mouthwashes, so we are familiar with its taste. But have you ever tried making a Peppermint Green tea which has actual leaves in its natural form? The refreshing taste of peppermint refreshes your palate immediately. But did you know that peppermint is benifcial for your stomach? It takes care of bloating, reduced acidity and keeps your digestion system healthy. So the next time you have a heavy lunch, have a peppermint green tea to ease your stomach.

4. Ginger Green tea

An all-time favourite, Ginger is used extensively in Indian households for cooking, and every household has its version of Ginger tea. Did you know that ginger root is rich in Vitamin C, magnesium and has other health properties? Ginger green tea relieves nausea, improves digestion and fights colds with its healing properties and strengthens your body's immunity. When your body gets fatigued, and you are getting a cold, prepare yourself a cup of ginger tea.

So, this monsoon, pair your delicious monsoon staples with these healthy, immunity-boosting teas. Happy monsoons everyone!

PDP Leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para claimed there was an atmosphere of fear in Kashmir since August 5 last year.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 7:14 PM IST

Peoples Democratic Party leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para on Wednesday asked the government why is it "difficult" for it to engage in dialogue with the people of Kashmir when it can hold talks with China. He was speaking to reporters after the first meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 of the Constitution on August 5 last year.

Authorities allowed several leaders to leave their residences after remaining in detention for over a year. Besides Para, PDP leaders Abdul Rehman Veeri, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Khursheed Aalam, and Suhail Bukhari attended the meeting convened by the party's youth wing here.

Para said the party will continue to raise the voice of the people. "This government claims to be a strong government and we accept it is. It likes to accept challenges," he said.

If the government can take part in the Afghan peace process and talk to China, "why is it difficult for you to engage with the people of Kashmir through dialogue and reconciliation", he asked. India is holding talks with China at the diplomatic and the military level to defuse tensions along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh where troops of the neighbouring countries have been locked in a standoff since early May.

Para claimed there was an atmosphere of fear in Kashmir since August 5 last year. "Those who speak up are detained. Even journalists who write stories are booked under the UAPA. There is an atmosphere of fear," he said.

The PDP had convened a meeting earlier this month but police did not allow several party leaders to leave their residences. Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who was arrested on August 5 last year, remains under house arrest.

Are you secretly owed THOUSANDS of dollars? The $162million fund of 'lost money' - and how you can claim your fair share

More than 900,000 people are owed thousands of dollars in a trove of unclaimed cash.

The forgotten $162million is held by the Queensland Public Trustee and is owed to state residents by businesses, agencies, individuals and deceased estates.

'If you've ever changed your name or address, didn't claim money from a real estate, solicitor firm ... there's a chance you may have unclaimed money owing to you, ' she told The Courier Mail.

The top ten largest sums come from seven deceased estates, a trust fund and an investment group, with the highest figure $419,870.

An estimated 232,000 people are owed more than $100, with about $10million belonging to people who live in Brisbane with postcodes between 4000 and 4029.

One person is entitled to $213,709 by Brisbane City Council, while another individual is owed $195,682 by Sunshine Coast regional council.

The spokeswoman said the trustee paid $4.6million across almost 3,000 claims in the 2019/20 financial year.

'Many people are both surprised and delighted to find there is money owing to them, so we encourage you to search online and check to see if we can reunite you with some long forgotten funds,' the spokeswoman said.

Potential beneficiaries are encouraged go to the Trustee's website and search the database.

'If you find money you think is owing to you, download the claim form and follow the lodgement steps required.'

Wall Street Higher But Apple Loses Ground After Event

Wall Street Higher But Apple Loses Ground After Event

U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday as investors hoped the Federal Reserve would stick with its supportive policy stance as the central bank's twoday meeting got underway.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:33 AM IST

U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday as investors hoped the Federal Reserve would stick with its supportive policy stance as the central bank’s two-day meeting got underway.

The market’s rise was limited as Apple Inc’s shares lost early gains following its rollout of a new virtual fitness service and a bundle of all its subscriptions, Apple One.

The S&P 500 technology index was still up 1% and the Nasdaq outperformed the other two major indexes, extending its recovery from a brutal sell-off earlier this month that had halted a Wall Street rally.

“The pullback we had is now behind us” probably, said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities in New York.

“While the economy is slowing, the upcoming macro news should be friendly, which should indicate the Fed will have no change in terms of policy,” he said.

In its first policy meeting since Fed Chair Jerome Powell announced a more accommodative stance on inflation, the central bank could switch its Treasury purchases toward more long-dated debt to keep long-term yields low, some strategists said.

Data on Tuesday showed U.S. factory output increased strongly in August. Separately, U.S. import prices increased more than expected for the same month, supporting the view that inflation pressures were building up.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 82.51 points, or 0.29%, to 28,075.84, the S&P 500 gained 24.6 points, or 0.73%, to 3,408.14 and the Nasdaq Composite added 153.85 points, or 1.39%, to 11,210.50.

Earlier in the day data showed China’s industrial output accelerated the most in eight months in August.

Citigroup Inc dropped 4.3% following a report that federal regulators were preparing to reprimand the U.S. lender for failing to improve its risk-management systems.

JPMorgan Chase & Co slipped 2.4% as it lowered its full-year net interest income forecast.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.92-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.72-to-1 ratio favored advancers.

The S&P 500 posted 21 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 63 new highs and 15 new lows.

Death claims in life insurance drop 20% in 2020 despite COVID-19

While onboarding a new customer digitally is still simple, settling the claim entirely online may not be feasible. Insurers have done their best

  • September 16, 2020
  • |
  • UPDATED   13:51 IST
Death claims in life insurance drop 20% in 2020 despite COVID-19
Life insurers have been prompt at settling the claims even as approaching hospitals to verify the claims has been a challenge

The number of death claims in the life insurance segment has dipped up to 20 per cent this year, contrary to what was assumed, thanks to people cooped up at home (resulting into a smaller number of accidental deaths) and low fatality rate of coronavirus pandemic. "Leading insurers have reported a drop of 6 per cent in the number of death claims. One of them recorded a plunge of 20 per cent," says Santosh Agarwal, CBO- Life Insurance, Policybazaar.com.

Explaining the reason, Agarwal says key causes of death claims last year were accident and murder/suicide, which have dropped 35-40 per cent this year. "The accidents have reduced due to restrictions of travel and there were no vehicles running on roads. Also, the number of murder/suicide cases dropped following the country-wide lockdown. Although COVID-19 wasn't there last year but even after factoring in pandemic-led deaths, the overall number of death claims for the life insurance industry has dropped."

Another reason could be nominees postponing to intimate a claim as venturing out of home was unsafe and not many were comfortable with taking the process online. Now that people are stepping out, claims are expected to rise. The numbers at Exide Life Insurance corroborate the trend. "We used to get 350 claims in a month, but the month-on-month figure has shot up to all-time high in August with the relaxation in the lockdown. We received less than 40 claims in the initial few months of this financial year," says Ashwin B, Chief Operating Officer at Exide Life Insurance.

Claims settlement amid pandemic

While onboarding a new customer digitally is still simple, settling the claim entirely online may not be feasible. Insurers have done their best. They have fine-tuned digital tools to streamline the online process for quick settlement. However, some external factors are creating issues. For example, in some cases claimants are unable to receive death certificate on time, the submission of which is imperative for claims settlement. "Hospitals are taking time in releasing the death certificates and other treatment records, but the bigger challenge is claimants hesitating to venture out and collect these documents," says Ashwin of Exide Life.

Meanwhile, life insurers have been prompt at settling the claims even as approaching hospitals to verify the claims has been a challenge. In fact, Policybazaar confirms not a single COVID claim has been rejected so far. "We do not differentiate between COVID-19 related and other claims. Our claims settlement process is simple and we believe in settling all genuine claims in the shortest possible time. For first 5 months of FY21 from April to August, the average time taken to settle a genuine claim stood at 1.32 days," says Ashish Rao, Chief Customer Experience and Operations, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.

Some insurers like Tata AIA Life Insurance and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance facilitate collecting documents from your doorstep, if requested. One can register claims via WhatsApp and Chatbots also. "Relevant documents can be uploaded using the digital enablers such as WhatsApp, Chatbot LiGo, Company Mobile App and Website to lodge claims as well as to track the status. Customers also have the option to walk in to our branches, where all safety protocols are strictly followed, to lodge claims. As an added layer of convenience, we do collect documents from the homes of claimants, which is done only on a request," says Rao of ICICI Prudential.

Exide Life Insurance advises to reach out to the insurer even before you have registered the claim. "It's not necessary to walk in to a branch. We have quite basic requirements to establish cause of death and relationship between the claimant and insured life. For example, we need death certificate in the case of death in the hospital, but accidental death or murder/suicide require a forensic report too. Our executives guide the claimants with utmost empathy and sincerity," says Ashwin of Exide Life.

Tata AIA has launched an initiative called Express Claim for speedy claims process. "Under this initiative, we process claim pay-outs within four hours of receiving the claim documents. This facility is provided for non-unit-linked and non-early claims as for Unit linked claims we need to get the NAV on the next date and for the early claims, cases might require detailed investigation. The investigation process is at times time consuming due to travel restrictions as well as access to hospitals due to COVID-19 restriction," says Yusuf Pachmariwala, EVP & Head of Operations, Tata AIA Life Insurance.

If it is not convenient to file the death claim now then you can delay it for some time. "Ideally, you should file it within two years of the date of the death beyond which you may be asked to explain and prove the reason for delay," says Shailesh Kumar, Co-Founder at Insurance Samadhan.

Meanwhile, in a significant development, the names of Bollywood celebrities like Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh and Simone Khambatta have apparently emerged in the NCB probe into the drugs angle surrounding Sushant Singh Rajput's death.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 8:42 AM IST

Enlarging its probe in the drugs angle in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has summoned the late actor's former manager Shruti Modi and talent manager Jaya Saha for questioning, officials said on Tuesday.

A senior NCB official said that the drug law enforcement agency has summoned Shruti Modi and Saha to appear before it on Wednesday morning at its Mumbai office.

The official said that they will be questioned about the drug use and delivery to Sushant and his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, who was arrested on last Tuesday, and if they were aware of this.

The latest development comes in the wake of the arrest of over 15 people in connection with the case, including Rhea, her brother Showik, Sushant's house manager Samuel Miranda and several others.

The NCB registered a case on the request of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after the alleged drug chats of Showik, Miranda and several others came to the fore.

Sushant was found dead in his Mont Blanc apartment on June 14. Besides the CBI and the ED, the NCB is the third agency to probe the death case of Sushant.

Meanwhile, in a significant development, the names of Bollywood celebrities like Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh and Simone Khambatta have apparently emerged in the NCB probe into the drugs angle surrounding Sushant's death, official sources said on Monday.

The NCB is also set to issue a summon to them in the coming days for questioning.

Porn star is arrested for 'filming sex movie' at sacred Nigerian grove said to be the home of a fertility goddess

  • The shrine is a UN-designated World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Osogbo
  • The Yoruba people believe the sacred forest is home to their fertility goddess
  • Follower of the goddess said that traditional worshippers will decide on additional punishment for Jolaosho once the police investigation is concluded

A porn star has been arrested for filming a 'sex movie' at a sacred Nigerian forest which is said to be the home of a fertility goddess.

Tobiloba Jolaosho, known in the Nigerian adult film industry as King Tblak HOC, has been arrested for allegedly recording a 'sex movie' at Osun Osogbo - a UN-designated World Heritage Site on the outskirts of the city of Osugbo.

The Yoruba people come to the grove from across Nigeria to offer sacrifices to their fertility goddess, Osun.

Mr Jolaosho, a popular adult movie producer, uploaded the clip to his social media accounts and website. In the scene, Mr Jolaosho is allegedly dressed in a white robe, which is usually worn by the goddess's followers, the BBC reported.

Police spokesman Opalola Yemisi told BBC Yoruba the movie producer's behaviour   'could have breached public peace' and that he will appear in court after an investigation is concluded.

Yemi Elebuibon, an Osun adherent, said that Mr Jolaosho had desecrated the sacred forest.

Mr Elebuibon added that the traditional worshippers in charge of the grove will decide what additional punishment Mr Jolaosho deserves after the police have finished their investigation.

Neither Mr Jolaosho nor his lawyer have commented on the case.

UNESCO describes the sacred grove as 'dotted with sanctuaries and shrines, sculptues and art works in honour of Osun and other deities'.

'The sacred grove, which is now seen as a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people, is probably the last in Yoruba culture,' it adds.

According to Yoruba mythology, Osun was one of the three wives of Shango, a powerful axe-wielding deity in the Yoruba tradition.

Thousands of people attend the two-week Osun Osogbo festival each year, where followers dance, sing, play drums and dress in colourful costumes to please the goddess.

The celebrations attract worshippers from across Nigeria and the rest of the world.

Yoruba followers say the Osun Osogbo forest is one of the few places that spirits still reveal themselves to bless adherents.

Moto G5 Plus Review

Moto G5 Plus Review

By Prasid Banerjee | Updated May 22 2019
Moto G5 Plus Review
  • PROS
  • Excellent camera
  • Impressive battery life
  • Android Nougat out-of-the-box
  • CONS
  • Camera needs to be faster
  • Only 16 or 32GB storage

Verdict

The Moto G5 Plus is more expensive this time, but it also has a vastly improved camera. It produces impressive contrast and dynamic range, taking photos that other phones in its category can't. This is complemented by impressive battery life and dependable performance. If Motorola had added waterproofing to this device, it would have been an absolute knockout.

Moto G5 Plus detailed review

Motorola's event at the Mobile World Congress was clashing with Nokia’s return announcements this year. As a result, many of us turned our attention to the Nokia phones, leaving what could be one of the best phones of 2017 with less attention than it deserves. The Moto G5 Plus is the fifth iteration of the company’s successful Moto G series, and marks a lot of firsts.

Of course, the rear facing 12MP camera is what makes the headlines here. It has the same aperture lens as the Samsung Galaxy S7 (review), uses dual-pixel technology just like the S7, and has f/1.7 aperture to boot. To make matters more enticing, it's available at budget pricing, too.

Camera

Motorola sent us this device just about a week ago, giving us enough time to take its camera to task. Its specs are mentioned above, but Motorola is sadly not revealing what sensor it has used. Most USSD codes don't work on the device either, so we were unable to determine the sensor. You can find a quick explanation of dual-pixel technology here.

However, a brief look at the camera makes it quite clear that this isn't as powerful a sensor as the Galaxy S7. This is more than acceptable, given the G5 Plus’ budget pricing. The camera is underscored by impressive dynamic range and focus at perfecting white balance and overall colour reproduction.

The Moto G5 Plus produces high dynamic range and warm colours on regular daylight condition

While taking photos with it, one feels a definite Pixel-like attribute — that of dynamic range. The Moto G5 Plus delivers very good colours, and the overall tonal quality of the images is noticeably superior to what cameras in this range offer, including dual-camera phones like the Honor 6X (review) and Coolpad Cool 1 (review). Colours are warmer (but pleasant) under sunlight and regular daylight conditions, with ISO levels usually hovering between 50 and 80.

Low light shots can be really good, given enough time.

The phone manages ISO levels very well, keeping them low when needed, and under control when cranking them up. As a result, even photos shot indoors and in low light conditions look quite decent. However, there is still visible noise when cropping to 100% or zooming in, and a lack in details as well. You’ll see these especially in shadow areas in photos, resulting in loss of details. To be clear, this is loss in the finer details that most users don’t look for. You will only need such details when enlarging photos for print or framing, or inspecting closely.

For regular social media sharing, the Moto G5 Plus easily offers the most value-for-money phone camera you can get right now. It achieves just the right exposure and details, and combined with its impressive dynamic range, produces photos with rich contrast and vibrant colours.

Its weakness, though, lies in focusing and processing speeds. While one can attribute higher focusing time to lesser power on the phone (compared to the Galaxy S7), slow focusing time is surprising, given that this is exactly what dual-pixel technology is supposed to resolve. The camera is prone to blurring with shaky hands, especially when shooting in lower light.

Moto G5 Plus Camera Samples

While this isn’t an issue when you have enough time to actually point and then shoot, quick snaps will often be blurry.

Build and Design

Despite the rising number of metallic designs on budget smartphones, Motorola has largely stuck to plastic on its Moto G series. The company had earlier justified this saying that it helps keep costs down. However, it finally gave in to consumer demand last year with the Moto M, and carried it over to the Moto G series this year.

The G5 Plus also has a non-removable aluminium plate on the back, with slight chamfers on its sides. It makes for a premium design, one that is definitely an upgrade from any of the earlier Moto G series devices. One has to consider, though, that phones like the Redmi Note 4 (review), Honor 6x and Coolpad Cool 1 feel the same.

Motorola has chosen a smaller screen this time making the device compact, especially with its thin bezels. However, the overall form factor is slightly wide, which is not well suited for single-handed usage. The fingerprint sensor lies on the front in an oval design in place of square, which was seen last year.

It also borrows the Moto Z (review) design language, with slightly raised, round camera module on the back. This gives the Moto G5 Plus a unique look, setting it apart from others. While looks may be subjective, from an overall build and design point of view, the Moto G5 Plus feels solid and new. It is also the first real upgrade to the Moto G series, in terms of design.

The Moto G5 Plus also foregoes the hybrid SIM slot that many have been using lately. The SIM tray, which lies on the top of the phone, has dual-SIM slots on one side and a microSD tray on the other. Sadly, though, Motorola couldn’t weave in waterproofing on this one, although its nano-coating remains, meaning the phone should still guard against accidental splashes. That makes the phone water resistant, but it may not be IP68 certified.

Performance

The Snapdragon 625 has quickly become the chipset of choice for OEMs looking to bring a balance between power and efficiency. Qualcomm’s 14nm chipset uses eight Cortex-A53 cores, clocked up to 2GHz. What’s interesting, though is how Motorola has implemented this SoC.

All eight cores are kept active during most actions, but most of the cores remain below 1GHz, unless absolutely required. You see four cores clock up to 2GHz when you launch games or other heavy applications. In practice, this results in faster app load times. Hence, apps like Asphalt 8, which make your phone freeze for just a split second when they’re loading, will launch faster, resulting in snappier performance.

When you’re playing high resolution games like Asphalt 8, every core on the Moto G5 Plus remains at 2GHz, for as long as they can. The phone can easily render at 30fps, which is the minimum you need for stutter-free gaming. Interestingly, the phone also avoids the usual lags we’ve seen (on other phones running the Snapdragon 625) during menu transitions and other animations, by ramping up to 60fps.

In essence, the Moto G5 Plus presents lag or stutter-free performance, aided by a Snapdragon 625 SoC, 4GB of RAM and some intelligent engineering from Motorola. However, one may still question whether all this would have been better with the Snapdragon 650 or 652, and it would have, at least on benchmarks. As far as regular usage is concerned, the Moto G5 Plus offers little room for complaints, which is what most users look at.

Battery

Here’s the kicker, though. Keeping all eight cores on at all times would ideally be difficult for a 3000mAh battery to handle. However, the Moto G5 Plus somehow manages nearly a day’s worth of battery life, too. Instead of putting benchmark numbers (which you’ll see in the graph below), we’ll paint a picture of regular usage.

After running two full discharge cycles, we charged the phone to 96% at 8pm on a Wednesday. This was followed by a couple of phone calls and about five photos shot using the camera, till the end of the day. After about 8 hours of idle time, where the phone dropped 5% battery (after about 15 notifications overnight), the phone was then put to use for some more camera usage and three more phone calls. At around 3.30pm the next day, after about 20 odd phone calls, 20 minutes gaming and 10 minutes using the camera, and 30 minutes streaming music, the phone was at 37% battery.

This was followed by two hours of audio on the device and the phone finally discharged to 11% at 5.30pm on Thursday. We charged it again to 25%, after which the phone was used as a WiFi hotspot for about 40 minutes and four more phone calls. The Moto G5 Plus dropped to 10% battery at 2am on Friday, when it was charged again.

Judging from that, the phone’s battery life is commendable. Motorola must have made the right optimisations, enabling battery stamina to last you through the day, with just about 20 apps on the device, over and above the ones that stock Android comes with anyway. Turbo Power charging by Moto helps you get up to about 30% battery in 20 odd minutes. However, the phone slows down after that and charging to 100% will still take about an hour and a half.

Display and UI

Specs-wise, the Moto G5 Plus has a 5.2 inch 1080p display, with 424ppi pixel density. That’s about the industry average today, and the display looks and feels good enough. However, there’s room for improvement. While touch response and feel are good, it sometimes feels sticky, which can be off putting. Colours and saturation are reasonable, but it lacks a certain vibrancy that many like.

If you happen to be used to AMOLED panels, you’ll certainly miss the punchy colours. The display is reasonable for the price, but one hopes for more. In fact, Motorola itself has presented better displays over the years.

The phone runs on Android Nougat, making it one of the few phones, still, to have the OS out-of-the-box. As always, Motorola has kept the UI largely stock and it doesn’t seem like many of Android’s stock APIs have been tampered with either. The only real addition are the new gesture features, integrated into the fingerprint sensor.

The Moto gestures now include swipe gestures, allowing you to swipe left or right on the fingerprint sensor to bring up the recents menu or toggle between apps. You can also long press the sensor for Google Now, and so on. To be absolutely honest, the gestures aren’t as important as they seem. They’re tough to get used to and not as responsive as they should be. Also, activating the gestures remove the on-screen home, recents and back buttons, making them somewhat frustrating at first.

The Moto G5 Plus is supposed to have the Google Assistant on it, but it doesn't seem like the feature is live in India right now. Long pressing the home button simply activates Google Now on the device.

Bottomline

At the time of writing this, Motorola hadn’t yet confirmed the price to us, so we can’t make a recommendation. However, the Moto G series usually costs around the Rs. 15,000 mark, which would make this a value-for-money device. At under Rs. 20,000, the Moto G5 Plus has the best camera right now, and though it isn’t the most powerful device, it does the job.

The Moto G5 Plus is definitely recommended for those looking for good camera performance, and it provides good value in the budget price range.
