Dr Reddys Laboratories jumped 4.42% to Rs 4639.55 after the drug major said it will co-operate with Russia's sovereign wealth fund on clinical trials and distribution of the Sputnik V vaccine in India.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Russia's sovereign wealth fund, and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (Dr. Reddy's), a global pharmaceutical company headquartered out of India, have agreed to cooperate on clinical trials and distribution of Sputnik V vaccine in India.

Upon regulatory approval in India, RDIF shall supply to Dr. Reddy's 100 million doses of the vaccine. The Sputnik V vaccine, which is based on well-studied human adenoviral vector platform with proven safety, is undergoing clinical trials for the coronavirus pandemic.

Deliveries could potentially begin in late 2020 subject to completion of successful trials and registration of the vaccine by regulatory authorities in India.

G V Prasad, co-chairman & managing director of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories said, "We will be conducting Phase-III trials in India to ensure safety and efficacy for the Indian population and to meet the requirements of the Indian regulators."

On 11 August 2020, the Sputnik V vaccine developed by the Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology was registered by the Ministry of Health of Russia and became the world's first registered vaccine against COVID-19 based on the human adenoviral vectors platform.

On 4 September 2020, a research paper on the results of Phase I and Phase II clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine was published in The Lancet, one of the leading international medical journals, demonstrating no serious adverse effects and a stable immune response in 100% of participants.

Post-registration clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine involving 40,000 volunteers are currently ongoing. More than 55,000 volunteers have applied to take part in post-registration trials.

The first results of these trials are expected to be published in October-November 2020.

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is a pharmaceutical company. Through its three businesses - pharmaceutical services and active ingredients, global generics and proprietary products - the company offers a portfolio of products and services, including active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), custom pharmaceutical services (CPI), generics, biosimilars, differentiated formulations and new chemical entities.

The drug major's consolidated net profit skid 12.11% to Rs 594.60 crore on 14.93% jump in revenue from operations to Rs 4,417.50 crore in Q1 June 2020 over Q1 June 2019.

In the past six months, the stock has surged 64.06% while the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex has 25.21% during the same period.

Verdict

With the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung has completed the transformation it started with the Galaxy S6 this year. The phone is a combination of power and design, and not many would deny that the phone looks good and performs well. It’s pure style, combined with good performance. The only real hitch is that a phone this expensive shouldn’t be prone to falling out of your hand. If you’re looking for a flagship phablet, then this is still the one to buy though.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 detailed review

Having reviewed three out of four Samsung flagships this years, there’s not much left to say about the Galaxy Note 5 that we haven’t said in those other reviews already. What differs though is that The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has much more to live up to than the other devices. This is a segment that Samsung pioneered, which means that the responsibility of innovating falls on its shoulders. Evidently though, the company’s focus this year is on design, because that’s precisely where the Note 5 is different from other Note devices till now.

Build and Design

The glass and metal design philosophy that Samsung adopted for its flagships, continues with the Note 5. The phone has curved glass on the back and a sheet of Gorilla Glass 4 on the front. But you already know about that.

What you need to know is that while the Note 5, like the Note 4 before it, is more compact than other phones in this series, it remains unwieldy. Many seem to like this large size though, so the decision falls on the buyer. The heavy usage of glass though makes the phone really slippery and prone to falling out of your hand.

None of that changes the fact that the phone looks premium though. The curved glass on the back has but one job, and that is to make this phone look good and different. From the front though, it’s a quintessential Samsung design, and whether you like it is completely your own opinion. For us, we would give Note 5 a lot of marks on the looks front.

Display
If you’ve read out Galaxy S6 Edge Plus review, you already know how good the Note 5’s display is. The 5.7 inch QHD SAMOLED display is one of the best out there. What’s interesting is that Samsung has toned down the yellowish-ness of the display. The Galaxy S6 Edge has a pretty warm display, to the point that it looks like the odd one out when placed next to an LG G4 and Sony Xperia Z3+, but the Note 5’s display is not as warm as we’ve come to expect from Samsung.

Colours are really vivid on the display, and if you’ve liked Samsung displays till now, this one’s to die for, just like the S6 Edge Plus.

S-Pen

The S-Pen on the Galaxy Note 5 is as good as it ever was, and a tad better. That said, even with a 5.7 inch display, there's only that much that you can do. If you've been a big proponent of Samsung's S-Pen though, then the one on the Note 5 is easily the best till now. It writes almost like a real pen and Samsung has added the option to add apps to the Air Command menu. So, you can now add apps like Evernote, OneNote and others to the Air Command menu and write on them using the S-Pen. What's more useful though is the Screen Off Memo option, which allows you to write with the S-Pen even with the display turned off. Whenever you pull the S-Pen out of the Note 5, the screen will remain black, but you can write on it and jot down a few notes. It's limited in the sense that there's only that much you can write on a 5.7 inch display, but its pretty useful nevertheless.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the Galaxy Note 5 can alert you if you've left the S-Pen behind somewhere. This perhaps is something that every Note user would appreciate, considering how many have lost their styluses. The S-Pen Alerts option is turned on by default and you can turn it off from the Settings menu.

Performance
Benchmarks don’t ever suffice for performance testing, but Samsung’s got both the aspects covered with its Exynos 7 Octa processor. This is the same processor that runs on the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and the S6 Edge Plus.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Performance | Create your own infographics

In regular usage, the Galaxy Note 5 can take anything you throw at it, and the bigger size of the phone, allows for better heat circulation, allowing the average clock speed to remain higher than in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The performance of the phone can’t be credited to the SoC alone though. While Exynos 7 is a good processor, the Note 5’s performance owes a lot to the fact that Samsung has made no compromise. The sequential read speeds for the storage on the phone come to around 440 MB per second which for the general public, translates to really good. In addition, DDR4 RAM allows the performance to be even smoother, and 4 GB of it, allows for a lot of multitasking.

The overall performance of the Note 5 is a combination of processor, NAND and RAM, and they all do well working in unison. It’s the best performing Android phone in the market right now, speaking in terms of pure performance. Even the call and network performance on the Note 5 is better than others. In a room with 5 people on the same Vodafone network, the Note 5 can get a 3G signal even when others are stuck on Edge. This is something that many iPhone users report about their devices.

It would be worth mentioning that the Galaxy Note 5 sends diagnostic reports to Samsung servers whenever it's connected to a WiFi. You can turn this off from the Settings Menu, by going into Lock Screen and Security. I have contacted Samsung to clarify that the Reports are indeed only diagnostic reports, and am yet to hear back from it.

Battery
All the performance though, usually take a toll on the battery life, so when Samsung allowed a 3,000 mAh battery, I was somewhat disappointed. You’re talking about a 5.7 inch QHD display here, along with a powerful octa-core processor.

Here again though, the Note 5 exceeded expectations. On a regular work day, with exactly 26 phone calls, lots of IMs, social networking and about 20 minutes of gaming, at midnight, the phone had 15% of battery left. This is without using the battery saver mode at all, and that’s about as good as any phone in the market can give you today.

Camera
We’ve discussed Samsung’s prowess with cameras in the Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge Plus review, so we’ll simply direct you to those for this one.

Bottomline
With the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung has completed the transformation it started with the Galaxy S6 this year. The phone is a combination of power and design, and not many would deny that the phone looks good and performs well. It’s pure style, combined with good performance. The only real hitch is that a phone this expensive shouldn’t be prone to falling out of your hand. If you’re looking for a flagship phablet, then this is still the one to buy though.

Sushant Rajput's Ex-Manager Sent Back As Probe Team Member Tests Positive

Shruti Modi reached Narcotics Control Bureau's office in south Mumbai today for questioning

Mumbai:

A member of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) team probing drugs angle in actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death case has tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday following which questioning of the actor's former manager Shruti Modi has been postponed, an official said.

Shruti Modi reached the NCB office in south Mumbai around 10 am for questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

But, before the probe team could start recording her statement, the NCB received report of one of its SIT members testing positive for coronavirus, the official said.

The SIT member's antigen test came out positive, he said, adding that other members of the probe team will also be tested and all protocols will be followed.

"Accordingly, we sent back Shruti Modi who had joined the investigation in the morning," he said.

The NCB on Tuesday asked Shruti Modi and Sushant Singh Rajput's talent manager Jaya Saha to join its investigation to get a better picture on some aspects of the case. Jaya Saha will now be called later, the official said.

So far, the top drug law enforcement agency has arrested 18 people, including Sushant Rajput's friend and actress Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty.

Earlier, statements of Shruti Modi and Jaya Saha were recorded by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is separately probing the Sushant death case.

They were also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Mumbai Police in connection with cases linked to the actor's death probe.

Chats of Jaya Saha with Rhea Chakraborty had come to light during the ED's questioning, the official added.

Sushant Singh Rajput (34) was found hanging in his flat in Mumbai's suburban Bandra on June 14.

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in India has surpassed five million, officials say, the second-highest in the world after the US.
The virus is spreading much faster in India than any other country, with daily cases crossing 90,000 for the five days up until Tuesday.
More than 80,000 people have died, amid reports of shortages of intensive care beds and oxygen supplies.
But the death rate is lower than in many countries with a high caseload.
The rise in infections comes as the government continues to lift restrictions throughout the country to try to boost an economy that lost millions of jobs when the virus hit in March.
In the initial stages of Covid-19, India appeared to be doing fairly well, imposing a strict lockdown, but the virus then hit megacities like Mumbai and the capital Delhi, before surging in smaller cities and rural areas.
Despite the increase, the government has eased restrictions.
As India opens up its economy and people return to work, Covid-19 cases have been surging. Some 600,000 cases were added just last week.
India's caseload now stands at 5,020,359 after it added 90,123 cases in the last 24 hours.

What about reported oxygen shortages?

Demand for oxygen has risen exponentially recently.
Hospitals and care centres are consuming up to about 2,700 tonnes of oxygen every day this month, compared with 750 tonnes in April, according to data obtained from All India Industrial Gases Manufacturers Association.
image copyrightGetty Images
image captionLarge hospitals depend on liquid oxygen with backup cylinders
Oxygen manufacturers say the demand for industrial oxygen has also shot up because more factories are now reopening.
The states seeing a worrying uptick in infections - Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh - are suffering the most. It is a lives-versus-livelihoods question that India is grappling with now, BBC India correspondent Soutik Biswas reports.
India will now need to increase capacity to make sure that both industries and patients do not suffer, our correspondent adds.
Most oxygen plants are built near cities and big towns. So supplies to far flung districts where Covid-19 patients are filling hospitals have to be sent by special lorries carrying cryogenic tanks - India has some 1,500 such vehicles.
Many states - the capital, Delhi, for example - do not have a single oxygen manufacturer, and all supplies have to come from neighbouring regions.

Willson Contreras and Cameron Maybin were plunked by consecutive pitches from Cleveland reliever Nick Wittgren in the ninth inning, forcing home the winning run as the Chicago Cubs beat the Indians 65 Tuesday night.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 9:36 AM IST

CHICAGO: Willson Contreras and Cameron Maybin were plunked by consecutive pitches from Cleveland reliever Nick Wittgren in the ninth inning, forcing home the winning run as the Chicago Cubs beat the Indians 6-5 Tuesday night.

After Cleveland tied the game at 5 with two runs in the top of the ninth, left-hander Oliver Prez (1-1) allowed a one-out walk to Kris Bryant in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Rizzo followed with a single that advanced Bryant to third. Wittgren drilled Contreras with a 1-1 fastball, then hit Maybin with a bases-loaded changeup.

Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, Josh Naylor drew a leadoff walk from Cubs closer Jeremy Jeffress. One out later, Francisco Lindor hit a two-run shot to left to tie the game. It was his eighth of the season and the second blown save for Jeffress (4-1).

Javier Bez also homered for the Cubs, who increased their lead to five games in the NL Central.

Lindor’s home run took away a victory for Cubs starter Yu Darvish. The NL Cy Young Award candidate allowed three runs and nine hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one as he bounced back from a loss to the Reds in his last outing.

Rookie Tyler Naquin was 4 for 4 for the Indians, who lost their season-high seventh straight game.

With the score tied at three in the seventh, Indians reliever James Karinchak walked Bryant with one out. Bryant advanced to third on Rizzo’s single, and Contreras followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score the go-ahead run.

Bez manufactured an insurance run in the eighth. He walked, stole second and came around to score after catcher Sandy Len’s throw went into center. Baez never hesitated, rounding third and beating Cleveland’s relay.

Happ doubled to center for the Cubs in the fifth and scored on Bryants single. Rizzo followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 3.

Lindor had three hits and four RBIs, including a run-scoring double during a two-run third. He was later thrown out at home by right fielder Jason Heyward on Jos Ramrezs flyout.

DeShields doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on Lindor’s single to give the Indians a 3-1 lead.

With one out in the second inning, Bez hit a towering home run to straightaway center field to put the Cubs up 1-0. It was Baezs seventh of the season.

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco pitched six innings and allowed three runs and eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk in the no-decision.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cubs: RHP Tyler Chatwood suffered a setback in his hopes of returning from a forearm strain . I don’t want to make a statement that his season is over, but I would say there is definitely a lot of caution, said Cubs manager David Ross.

UP NEXT

Indians: RHP Aaron Civale (3-5) is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Cubs. He has gone at least six innings in all nine of his starts this season, despite losing three of his last four starts.

Cubs: LHP Jon Lester (2-2), who is coming off one of his best starts of the season, is Chicago’s scheduled starter. He struck out a season-high eight batters in six scoreless innings against the Brewers on Friday.

COVID-19: Long-term health issues after recovery continue to puzzle researchers

COVID-19: Long-term health issues after recovery continue to puzzle researchers

Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID) is a UK-wide collaboration between leading researchers.

Little by little, medical researchers are beginning to uncover more about the 2019 novel coronavirus. Until the vaccine or an effective drug becomes available, prevention remains the best way to control the spread of this highly contagious pathogen. Meanwhile, there are those who were hospitalised due to mild or severe symptoms and eventually discharged after tests confirm they were negative. However, scientists are still baffled by the long-term effects that continue to incapacitate people even after they have fully recovered.

Therefore, leading experts have been called in to find out what is causing these cycles of illnesses. The main complaints from patients include brain fog, chronic fatigue, and difficulty in breathing. "At the moment it is just so unknown. We're still very much at the point where we're learning what the after-effects are," explained co-investigator Dr. Rachael Evans. "It has become very apparent that the long-term effects can happen to people that were young and fit before and perhaps had a fairly mild acute illness... enough to bring them to hospital but maybe only a day or two."

One of the cases that were highlighted involved a 22-year-old patient who was considered physically fit prior to her being diagnosed with COVID-19. It has been six months since her recovery, but she still suffers from irregular heart rate, fever, nausea, and chronic fatigue. Upon checking her medical history, there were reportedly no pre-existing conditions.

The respiratory consultant pointed out that most pneumonia cases can take up to three months to make a full recovery. On the other hand, patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 continue to experience various symptoms for much longer. In her 23 years with the National Health Service (NHS) there has been no recorded precedent in respiratory medicine, reports the Evening Standard.

As such, the post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID) is a UK-wide collaboration between leading researchers. It is an effort to better understand and provide care for people with long-term effects of the disease.

The study hopes to recruit 10,000 COVID-19 patients who have recovered and monitor them for a year or longer. Funding will be provided by the UK Research and Innovation group along with the National Institute for Health Research. The ultimate goal is to discover treatments and learn how to prevent various long-term effects.

Think People are Confusing Inheritance with Nepotism, Says Javed Akhtar

Javed Akhtar

Javed Akhtar

Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar said that many people are confusing inheritance with nepotism. He said that a person born in a film family is privileged but it is not enough.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:50 PM IST

Celebrated lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar recently shared his point-of-view on the raging debate on nepotism in Bollywood. Ever since the tragic demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, Bollywood has come under fire for issues like discrimination of outsiders and alleged drug usage.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Akhtar said that people are confusing inheritance with nepotism. "Inheritance cannot be called nepotism. I think people are confusing inheritance with nepotism. In film industry, nepotism is not possible because ultimately, the person who is buying the ticket at the box office is the voter and that cannot be rigged. May be somebody born in a film family has a foot in the door, but that’s about all," he said.

Talking about drug consumption in Bollywood, he said that it is the malice of the society. He further added that he has only heard and not seen any drug with his own eyes.

"But I have heard the young people tend to use drugs, but that is not just in film industry, it is the current malice of the society. That should be looked into. And I don’t know what is illegal and what is legal,” he added.

Akhtar was recently ghe recipient of the Richard Dawkins Award. He is currently the Chairman The Indian Performing Right Society (IRPS).

Global Markets: Yen Benefits From Caution Before Fed Meeting; European Shares Edge Higher

Investors were generally cautious before the Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday, boosting the yen, as the rally that pushed up shares after Chinese and U.S. economic data in the previous session slowed in early London trading.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:09 PM IST

LONDON: Investors were generally cautious before the Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday, boosting the yen, as the rally that pushed up shares after Chinese and U.S. economic data in the previous session slowed in early London trading.

Risk appetite was limited ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy meeting, and its statement at 1800 GMT.

European shares were mixed at the opening, but then rose, with the Stoxx 600 up around 0.3%, pushed up by gains in retail stocks.

The MSCI world equity index, which tracks shares in 49 countries, was up 0.2% at 0724 GMT, while MSCI’s main European Index was up 0.3%.

World stocks https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/mkt/gjnvwjelxpw/Pasted%20image%201600243112184.png

The Fed is not expected to make changes to its monetary policy at the meeting, which will be its first since it announced that it would pursue average inflation targeting.

Although the economic projections are expected to be somewhat improved from the last round of forecasts in June, Fed Chair Jerome Powell is expected to stick to his message that the road to recovery will be long and uncertain.

“While acknowledging the more rapid improvement in the economic backdrop, we expect the message to remain one of caution,” wrote RBC Capital Markets analysts in a note to clients.

“There is no upside for the committee to be positive at this juncture.”

Investors will also be watching for U.S. retail sales data, due at 1230 GMT, which is expected to show a robust increase.

London’s FTSE 100 lagged other European indexes, down 0.4%, and the pound was down against the euro, weighed down by fears of a disorderly departure from the EU single market.

UK inflation dropped to its lowest rate in almost five years last month, led by a large reduction in meal prices.

“We’ve already started to see the early signs of the unemployment rate starting to edge higher, and with the furlough coming to an end next month and already being tapered, this deflationary wave is likely to get worse in the short term,” wrote Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.

The yen hit a two-week high of 105.250 to the U.S. dollar overnight, as investors sought safer assets, and it held close to these levels at 105.325 at 0726 GMT.

Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was a touch weaker, down 0.1% at 93.005 at 0740 GMT.

The euro was up 0.1% at $1.18595.

High-rated eurozone government debt was little changed, with the benchmark German 10-year Bund yield at -0.483%.

Oil prices rose for a second day in a row, with U.S. crude oil hitting one week highs, up 2.4% at $39.21 a barrel at 0746 GMT.

Gold prices rose, up 0.5% at $1964.38 an ounce at 0747 GMT.

Elsewhere, the World Trade Organization ruled that the United States had breached global trade rules with the multibillion-dollar tariffs it imposed during its trade war with China.

The decision had limited market impact as it is only the start of a legal process that could take years.

Verdict

The Lenovo IdeaPad S430 is a slightly slimmer and crisper IdeaPad 330S from last year with improved battery life and a physical webcam cover. Though it's missed its chance to offer its users a new colourful IPS LCD panel, it's not a bad buy if you want an Asus VivoBook alternative.

Lenovo IdeaPad S340 detailed review

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 has been around in the Indian laptop market for a couple of months now. It is currently on sale alongside the IdeaPad 330 and IdeaPad 330S, two models that were launched last year to fill the company’s budget laptop space along with the more premium IdeaPad 530S. This year though, Lenovo has decided to rejig its entire IdeaPad line-up even if last year’s models are still around in the market (especially during the sale season). Lenovo has prefixed the name of every non-touchscreen model in its updated 40 series with an ‘S’ to keep things uniform.

Let’s review the refreshed IdeaPad line-up just so we’re clear with the new model names: in the place of the IdeaPad 330, we have the IdeaPad S145. This year, it comes solely in a 15.6-inch avatar with dedicated media keys above the numpad. You can read our review of the new model here. In the place of the more expensive IdeaPad 530S, we have the IdeaPad S540. We’re yet to get our hands on that one. Lastly, in the place of the IdeaPad 330S, we have the IdeaPad S340—the device in question.

The IdeaPad S340 is available in 14-inch and 15.6-inch variants, starting at Rs 37,990. All of the variants listed on Lenovo’s official website are powered by a solid-state drive (either 256GB or 512GB), a move Lenovo consciously made this time around to increase the overall computing speed and keep up with the competition. Strangely though, our review unit came with a 1TB hard drive instead. What’s even more strange is that it was listed on Amazon.in for Rs 51,990 when the selfsame variant with a 256GB solid-state drive was available on Lenovo’s official website for Rs 50,990.

Performance

Our review unit featured an Intel Core i5-8265U CPU with integrated graphics. System RAM came in the form of a non-removable 4GB DDR4 chip soldered to the motherboard combined with a removable 4GB DDR4 SODIMM card, bringing the total up to 8GB. This meant future upgrades were limited to a maximum of 12GB, which is forgivable. Handling storage was not a PCIe NVMe solid-state drive but a 1TB WDC hard drive spinning at 5,400 rpm. This not so forgivable, in my opinion. On paper alone, this configuration is a tad disappointing, given the fact that you can get all this and a little more from Asus for Rs 43,990.

No Intel 9th Gen/10th Gen Core i5 here

The IdeaPad S340 bagged average scores on our CPU and GPU benchmark tests. On PCMark 8's Accelerated Creative test, our review unit picked up 3464 points. The Asus VivoBook S431 and VivoBook X403, by contrast, scored 3551 and 3724 on the same test, respectively. On 3DMark's Fire Strike and Cloud Gate, our review unit scored 1096 and 8468 points, respectively. The other two aforementioned Asus VivoBook models got ahead on the same two tests by about 100 points each. On CrystalDiskMark 6, the review unit scored an abysmally low 102.3 MB/s (sequential read) and 112.6 MB/s (sequential write), indicating that its hard drive is approximately sixteen times slower than the two VivoBooks on the same test.

IdeaPad S340 vs. VivoBook S431 vs. VivoBook X403

Same contenders here

Everyday performance of the review unit can be termed decent at best. It was apparent that the device's speed was limited greatly by its hard drive. A cold-boot to Windows 10's lock screen (without any pending Windows updates) took somewhere between one and two minutes. Getting to the desktop and being fully ready for use took another whole minute from that point. Opening File Explorer for the first time took about three and a half seconds. Opening a 1.0MB PNG image file in Photos for the first time took close to nine seconds and up to two seconds subsequently. Bringing up the Start menu or Windows Search took about two seconds on an average.

Browsing on a Chrome window with over a dozen open tabs was fairly smooth but switching between the tabs or other windows took some time. Every time I switched between windows, I noticed a second's lag in the window switcher. On the whole, the IdeaPad S340 never really stuttered or hiccupped but displayed ample lag when there was disk activity involved. It's why this model is best bought with one of the solid-state drive options that Lenovo offers on its official website. In simpler words, the sluggish hard drive inside just ruins the otherwise promising performance party on the IdeaPad S340.

Battery

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 packs a three-cell 52.5Wh non-removable lithium-ion polymer battery, which, for a laptop of its price, is quite meaty. On our standard battery benchmark test, our review unit lasted 4 hours, 39 minutes. That's 24 minutes over the Asus VivoBook S431's score. Understandably, the IdeaPad S431 could not beat the VivoBook X403 (6 hours, 16 minutes), which packs an unusually large 72Wh battery pack. It's an acceptable score nonetheless.

On our everyday tests, where the screen is set to 80 percent brightness and Wi-Fi + Bluetooth are enabled, the review unit's charge fell from 100 to 55 percent in exactly three hours. During the tests, the IdeaPad S340 was tasked with continuous browsing (about 15 or 20 tabs on Chrome) and constant music playback through USB headphones (YouTube window open in the background). On another such run with a slightly heavier load (full brightness, a couple of app installations, file downloads, etc.), the charge fell from 100 to 45 percent in the same three-hour time frame. Charging from 30 percent back to full took about one and a half hours.

Display, Audio, and IO

Our review unit featured a 14-inch non-touchscreen TN panel with Full HD resolution and an anti-glare finish. Colours on the panel appeared thoroughly washed out in all brightness settings. At some angles, they even appeared to have a reddish tinge. What’s more, both vertical and horizontal viewing angles were severely limited. This made text quite hard to read even if the font size wasn't too small. On the bright side, text did not look grainy the way it did on the IdeaPad S145’s screen. I found myself pushing the brightness all the way to the panel’s maximum of 220 nits on many occasions, even when I was indoors. All things considered, the IdeaPad S340’s display is a sorely disappointing one because it lacks colour and readability.

Woefully dull non-IPS TN panel

The IdeaPad S340 comes with two down-firing speakers on either side of its base panel. The sound through them is fairly loud but flat and uninspiring despite enabling the bundled Dolby Audio app. The Weeknd's Starboy sounded absolutely flat across all frequencies on our review unit. On the plus side, the max volume was enough to fill a large conference room (15 x 20 feet). This pair is best used for short, occasional YouTube watches and quick conference calls. If you want quality audio, it's best to invest in a pair of good headphones.

Weak audio despite Dolby Audio app

The IdeaPad S340 does not disappoint when it comes to connectivity. On the left side of its body, we see a proprietary round-pin power port, a full-size HDMI port, a USB-C 3.1 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack for headsets. On the right side, we see a couple of USB-A 3.1 ports and a full-size SD Card reader slot. Missing in action are the LAN port, fingerprint scanner, and Kensington Security Slot. The power brick is a standard 65W matte black unit, like the one that was bundled with last year's models.

No USB-A here, sadly

A Kensington Security Slot would not have gone amiss

Interestingly, the IdeaPad S340 comes with a physical privacy shutter for its 720p webcam. That means you won't have to go around sticking a piece of tape over the webcam lens for that added peace of mind. This is the cheapest Lenovo to get the privacy shutter. Until now the feature has been available only on the more expensive ThinkPad models.

Nifty little slider for the webcam ensures privacy and peace of mind

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard on the IdeaPad S340 is no different than the one on the IdeaPad 330S, and that's definitely a good thing because that unit wasn’t bad to start with. The keys possess a decent amount of resistance but could do with a bit more travel. Being a bit mushy, they could also do with a bit more ‘clickiness’. That said, they work well for long emails and documents all the same; you won’t find yourself mistyping too much along the way. In addition, there are two stages of backlighting for all your lowlight typing. In summary, the IdeaPad S340 sports a moderately comfortable keyboard.

Decent keyboard, borrowed from IdeaPad 330S

Unlike the touchpad on the cheaper IdeaPad S145, the one on the IdeaPad S340 is a Windows 10-recognised precision unit. This means the pointer’s movement is natural and linear. It also means multi-finger taps and swipes work right out of the box. All of the touchpad’s settings can be changed in Windows Settings without installing a third-party driver or utility. The two click keys under the touchpad’s smooth, smudge-free surface are fairly easy to click as long as you press within the lower half section of the touchpad.

Precision touchpad, unlike on the cheaper IdeaPad S145

Build and Design

This is one department in which the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 excels without a trace of doubt. Lenovo has basically taken everything that’s nice and clean in last year’s IdeaPad 330S and incorporated it in the new IdeaPad S340. It has also shaved off body thickness by 1.05mm. As a result, Lenovo’s refreshed mid-ranger looks neat and modern. The base panel ditches the curvy chins for a crisper, more ‘ThinkBook’-like look. The slim black bezels around the display continue to look slim. What’s more, there’s that privacy shutter for the webcam that we covered earlier.

Anodised aluminium top cover offers ample grip

While the top cover of the IdeaPad S340 is made of anodised aluminium, the base panel is made of plastic with soft paint coated on top. Surprisingly, the difference hardly shows when you’re carrying the device around in the hands. The IdeaPad S340 appears to be a rigid and durable machine with little flex on the lid and almost no flex on the keyboard island, so it should survive the occasional scratch (or drop, if you're lucky). There’s ample grip all around too. The display on the IdeaPad S340 goes all the way back to 180 degrees, which should make your in-bed computing sessions more comfortable. All things considered, the IdeaPad S340 is well engineered laptop for its price.

Display goes all the way back to 180 degrees

Bottom Line

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is practically last year's IdeaPad 330S with a few key upgrades: improved aesthetics (including a slimmer frame), that nifty little privacy shutter for the webcam, and extended battery life. Lenovo could have used this opportunity to throw in a brighter, more colourful Full HD IPS LCD panel as well. Unfortunately for us, our review unit was fitted with a hard drive (even though all of the variants on Lenovo's official website get a solid-state drive), which killed its performance across benchmark and everyday tests. I'm confident that the same laptop with Lenovo's PCIe NVMe solid-state drive offering would have done a lot better on the performance front.

Even if we don't take into account our review unit's middling performance, the IdeaPad S340 just about manages to live up to its most immediate competitors from Taiwan. The quality of the keyboard and display on the recently launched Asus VivoBook S431 is much better. The VivoBook X403, in fact, offers roughly eight hours of battery life for a similar price. The Lenovo IdeaPad S340, then, is for hardcore Lenovo fans who missed the bus last year with the IdeaPad 330S. But if you've already got the IdeaPad 330S with the same (or similar) configuration, then the upgrade to the IdeaPad S340 doesn't make any sense. Just tape that webcam shut and keep going.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy On Max is quite simply the best low light shooter in the sub-20K smartphone category. We wish the overall performance and battery life could be a shade better. However, if camera and especially low-light shooting is your top priority, the Samsung Galaxy On Max should definitely be in your consideration list for a 15-20K budget range.

Samsung Galaxy On Max detailed review

The Samsung Galaxy On Max is the latest addition to Samsung’s ever growing online only On series. The phone is derived from the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max and keeps most of the specifications and aesthetics intact. It has a new octa-core chipset and an improved camera. Going by what the Galaxy J7 Max was able to achieve, at the beginning of this review we expected the On Max to surpass that at least. Were we right, but let us take you through our full review and find out.

Build and Design
As I mentioned earlier, the On Max is actually a J7 Max with some new tricks up its sleeve, dressed in the same attire. So, there is nothing different in terms of design, build quality or even the ergonomics of the two phones. The back of the phone is wrapped in metal and the top and bottom portions are plastic with a metal finish. The phone looks and feels quite premium, but like most budget smartphones, slab-like. There is one thing missing from the On Max and that is the ring flash on the rear camera, absence of which we don’t mind, as the On Max offers superb camera capabilities for its price anyway (more on that later).

The larger footprint also takes some time settling into your palms, but you won't mind adjusting your grip to reach the volume rocker over time. The home-cum-fingerprint scanner remains at the bottom centre, with the recents and back keys on either side. While there is nothing wrong with the setup, some people may find the physical home button, which you have to press down to go back to the home screen, a little unnatural compared to the rest of the navigation.

Display and UI
While the design remains largely borrowed from the J7 Max, the On Max does get a new display, posting an impressive score of 671 lux on our luminance meter. This is almost a 100 lux brighter than the J7 Max. It features decent colour reproduction as well as good viewing angles. Samsung could have provided its signature AMOLED display on the phone, but the 5.7-inch 1080p TFT display does the job well. Like the J7 Max, the On Max display also looks slightly washed out, but on day-to-day basis, that is something which a majority of people won't notice. The touch response is also accurate and smooth, and since this is a large display, videos and movie watching experience on the device is really good.

We also like the fact that the Samsung Galaxy On Max comes with the Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, which most smartphone OEMs, especially in the budget segment are ignoring. The UI though, looks pretty similar to what we have seen on previous Samsung devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the J7 Max.

It’s good that Samsung is maintaining that minimal aesthetic look, that we have grown to like, but we would also like to point out that Samsung is still duplicating apps. You still get proprietary mail and browser apps, which aren’t necessary. There are two different app stores on the phone, including Galaxy Apps and Google Play. Apps like S health, Samsung Pay Mini and secure folder, which are actually quite good are behind Samsung’s account login. So, to use them you would have make yet another account. We are not saying this is an issue with the On Max, but with all Samsung phones, and the problem could have been resolved by just allowing users to login via their pre-registered Google account.

In addition to all this Samsung also has face unlock on this phone, which is not as safe as your fingerprint scanner. Moreover, it works only if there is ample ambient light.

Performance and Battery
If you have already gone through our Galaxy J7 max review by now, then you would know its performance left us wanting. Samsung has tried to overcome the slow performance of the MediaTek Helio P20 using a newer, more powerful Helio P25 Lite. This SoC shares its octa-core setup with the P20 only, but packs a better punch. Now, the performance is still behind devices running the Qualcomm SD652, like the Coolpad Cool 1, but it does catch up to the most SD625 powered devices.

Combined with 4GB of RAM, the On Max provides smooth performance with few occasional lags. So, whether you are editing images on Snapseed or just scrolling through Facebook, the phone does the job well. Gaming performance and the graphics quality have improved and this is easily visible in synthetic benchmarks. Although, don't expect super fast app loading.

The performance however, comes at the cost of battery life. While the 3300mAh battery is well optimised to work for efficiency, the Helio P25 still drains more battery than the P20. In our PCMark battery test, the phone lasted for just 6 hours and three minutes. Using it as a daily driver, we observed that the phone would last even a heavy user an entire work day from dusk till dawn. Although, one might have to constrain their gaming sessions to let the phone survive the day. However, if you are just streaming a few episodes of your favorite show, the phone would get by just fine.

Camera
While battery life is good enough, the rear camera on the Samsung Galaxy On Max is just superb. Samsung is using a 13MP rear camera setup with f/1.7 aperture. This, combined with the new camera, captures well detailed images in all lighting conditions. While images taken during the day are amongst the best in its category, the On Max really shines in low light conditions. In low light, the f/1.7 aperture comes into the play in full force and Samsung’s new camera algorithm works overtime. However, in our tests we found that in low light the camera performs better if you switch to Pro mode, since the camera has the tendency to brighten the image, which may not be suited for all low light conditions. We also observed a slight posterization effect in some low light images, which happens due to the aggressive algorithm, that smoothes noise. This means that the On Max is really good for taking silhouettes. (Note: All images have been resized to fit)

That being said, there is a focus locking issue we find is persistent while shooting macro in low light conditions. The camera tends to shift focus to infinity and is unable lock focus on the small subject in the foreground. White balance and dynamic range remains impressive in all situations, so that is one less worry. Moreover, Samsung phones have a tendency to make images slightly warmer, which is not exactly an accurate representation, but is something many would like.

Samsung has also made some improvements to the video department, with better video stabilization and swift autofocus. The autofocus in videos struggles during the night, which is understandable. The front facing camera on the phone is also good and features a 13MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture. It takes detailed images, adding a slight warm tone it. You also get a front facing flash for low light selfies, but that is not very helpful in pitch dark conditions.

Bottomline
So, The Samsung Galaxy On Max finally evens out the playing field, something the Galaxy J7 couldn't do. It has one of the best rear cameras we have seen in the sub-20K category, especially in low light conditions. Although, we would have loved it more if the camera could have provided more consistent focus in low light conditions. We believe Samsung can fix this with a simple software update.

Samsung’s efforts to offer Android Nougat out-of-the-box are also appreciated, but we would love to see less Samsung bloatware in times to come. As for the performance and battery life, we believe both are satisfactory and will get the job done on a day-to-day basis. We don't have any complaints about the design, build and feel of the phone.

How it compares

A few weeks back when we reviewed the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max, we found its imaging performance to rival the Moto G5 Plus - a de facto recommendation in the sub-20k segment. However, the J7 Max was not a competent phone on overall terms, and that is what Samsung Galaxy On Max intends to change. While it maintains its good camera quality, it seemingly falters much lesser than the J7 Max in terms of overall performance.

With that, while the Moto G5 Plus is a much better overall smartphone, the Galaxy On Max is the better shooter of the two, by a slight margin. All this makes the Galaxy On Max one of the best phones to buy under Rs. 20,000.

How To Make Potato Nuggets?

For the recipe, take boiled and mashed potatoes in a bowl, take some mashed left-over rice, then some bread crumbs, chilli flakes, oregano, garlic cloves, salt as per taste, butter, black pepper powder. Mix everything well, then add coriander leaves, green chillies, corn flour or arrowroot. Make a thick mixture, and cut rectangular potato nuggets using a knife. If the mixture is sticking to the knife, you can sprinkle some cornflour over it. Now, make a maida slurry, dip the rectangular bits you just cut and fry them until crispy. Your nuggets are ready to serve.
