Thousands of schoolchildren across North Wales are now back at school - we want to hear what your experience has been like

St John the Baptist School in Penymynydd

After months of home schooling, children across North Wales returned to the classroom last week as the schools went back for their autumn term.

Following a six-month break for many pupils because of the coronavirus pandemic schools reopened albeit with strict restrictions in place.

Despite days and weeks of preparations and most people enjoying a trouble-free return, it has not all run smoothly and already some children have had to self-isolate because of classmates or even teachers testing positive for Covid-19.

In North Wales, there are a number of schools who have already seen positive coronavirus cases.

We will continue to report on the return to school across the area, but we want to hear from you too.

Has your child's school had a confirmed case of coronavirus? How do you feel about the size of the bubble your child has been put in?

Please take our short survey below so we can gather a wider understanding of what the change from months of being at home has been like for parents, teachers and children.

Verdict

The Lenovo IdeaPad S430 is a slightly slimmer and crisper IdeaPad 330S from last year with improved battery life and a physical webcam cover. Though it's missed its chance to offer its users a new colourful IPS LCD panel, it's not a bad buy if you want an Asus VivoBook alternative.

Lenovo IdeaPad S340 detailed review

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 has been around in the Indian laptop market for a couple of months now. It is currently on sale alongside the IdeaPad 330 and IdeaPad 330S, two models that were launched last year to fill the company’s budget laptop space along with the more premium IdeaPad 530S. This year though, Lenovo has decided to rejig its entire IdeaPad line-up even if last year’s models are still around in the market (especially during the sale season). Lenovo has prefixed the name of every non-touchscreen model in its updated 40 series with an ‘S’ to keep things uniform.

Let’s review the refreshed IdeaPad line-up just so we’re clear with the new model names: in the place of the IdeaPad 330, we have the IdeaPad S145. This year, it comes solely in a 15.6-inch avatar with dedicated media keys above the numpad. You can read our review of the new model here. In the place of the more expensive IdeaPad 530S, we have the IdeaPad S540. We’re yet to get our hands on that one. Lastly, in the place of the IdeaPad 330S, we have the IdeaPad S340—the device in question.

The IdeaPad S340 is available in 14-inch and 15.6-inch variants, starting at Rs 37,990. All of the variants listed on Lenovo’s official website are powered by a solid-state drive (either 256GB or 512GB), a move Lenovo consciously made this time around to increase the overall computing speed and keep up with the competition. Strangely though, our review unit came with a 1TB hard drive instead. What’s even more strange is that it was listed on Amazon.in for Rs 51,990 when the selfsame variant with a 256GB solid-state drive was available on Lenovo’s official website for Rs 50,990.

Performance

Our review unit featured an Intel Core i5-8265U CPU with integrated graphics. System RAM came in the form of a non-removable 4GB DDR4 chip soldered to the motherboard combined with a removable 4GB DDR4 SODIMM card, bringing the total up to 8GB. This meant future upgrades were limited to a maximum of 12GB, which is forgivable. Handling storage was not a PCIe NVMe solid-state drive but a 1TB WDC hard drive spinning at 5,400 rpm. This not so forgivable, in my opinion. On paper alone, this configuration is a tad disappointing, given the fact that you can get all this and a little more from Asus for Rs 43,990.

No Intel 9th Gen/10th Gen Core i5 here

The IdeaPad S340 bagged average scores on our CPU and GPU benchmark tests. On PCMark 8's Accelerated Creative test, our review unit picked up 3464 points. The Asus VivoBook S431 and VivoBook X403, by contrast, scored 3551 and 3724 on the same test, respectively. On 3DMark's Fire Strike and Cloud Gate, our review unit scored 1096 and 8468 points, respectively. The other two aforementioned Asus VivoBook models got ahead on the same two tests by about 100 points each. On CrystalDiskMark 6, the review unit scored an abysmally low 102.3 MB/s (sequential read) and 112.6 MB/s (sequential write), indicating that its hard drive is approximately sixteen times slower than the two VivoBooks on the same test.

IdeaPad S340 vs. VivoBook S431 vs. VivoBook X403

Same contenders here

Everyday performance of the review unit can be termed decent at best. It was apparent that the device's speed was limited greatly by its hard drive. A cold-boot to Windows 10's lock screen (without any pending Windows updates) took somewhere between one and two minutes. Getting to the desktop and being fully ready for use took another whole minute from that point. Opening File Explorer for the first time took about three and a half seconds. Opening a 1.0MB PNG image file in Photos for the first time took close to nine seconds and up to two seconds subsequently. Bringing up the Start menu or Windows Search took about two seconds on an average.

Browsing on a Chrome window with over a dozen open tabs was fairly smooth but switching between the tabs or other windows took some time. Every time I switched between windows, I noticed a second's lag in the window switcher. On the whole, the IdeaPad S340 never really stuttered or hiccupped but displayed ample lag when there was disk activity involved. It's why this model is best bought with one of the solid-state drive options that Lenovo offers on its official website. In simpler words, the sluggish hard drive inside just ruins the otherwise promising performance party on the IdeaPad S340.

Battery

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 packs a three-cell 52.5Wh non-removable lithium-ion polymer battery, which, for a laptop of its price, is quite meaty. On our standard battery benchmark test, our review unit lasted 4 hours, 39 minutes. That's 24 minutes over the Asus VivoBook S431's score. Understandably, the IdeaPad S431 could not beat the VivoBook X403 (6 hours, 16 minutes), which packs an unusually large 72Wh battery pack. It's an acceptable score nonetheless.

On our everyday tests, where the screen is set to 80 percent brightness and Wi-Fi + Bluetooth are enabled, the review unit's charge fell from 100 to 55 percent in exactly three hours. During the tests, the IdeaPad S340 was tasked with continuous browsing (about 15 or 20 tabs on Chrome) and constant music playback through USB headphones (YouTube window open in the background). On another such run with a slightly heavier load (full brightness, a couple of app installations, file downloads, etc.), the charge fell from 100 to 45 percent in the same three-hour time frame. Charging from 30 percent back to full took about one and a half hours.

Display, Audio, and IO

Our review unit featured a 14-inch non-touchscreen TN panel with Full HD resolution and an anti-glare finish. Colours on the panel appeared thoroughly washed out in all brightness settings. At some angles, they even appeared to have a reddish tinge. What’s more, both vertical and horizontal viewing angles were severely limited. This made text quite hard to read even if the font size wasn't too small. On the bright side, text did not look grainy the way it did on the IdeaPad S145’s screen. I found myself pushing the brightness all the way to the panel’s maximum of 220 nits on many occasions, even when I was indoors. All things considered, the IdeaPad S340’s display is a sorely disappointing one because it lacks colour and readability.

Woefully dull non-IPS TN panel

The IdeaPad S340 comes with two down-firing speakers on either side of its base panel. The sound through them is fairly loud but flat and uninspiring despite enabling the bundled Dolby Audio app. The Weeknd's Starboy sounded absolutely flat across all frequencies on our review unit. On the plus side, the max volume was enough to fill a large conference room (15 x 20 feet). This pair is best used for short, occasional YouTube watches and quick conference calls. If you want quality audio, it's best to invest in a pair of good headphones.

Weak audio despite Dolby Audio app

The IdeaPad S340 does not disappoint when it comes to connectivity. On the left side of its body, we see a proprietary round-pin power port, a full-size HDMI port, a USB-C 3.1 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack for headsets. On the right side, we see a couple of USB-A 3.1 ports and a full-size SD Card reader slot. Missing in action are the LAN port, fingerprint scanner, and Kensington Security Slot. The power brick is a standard 65W matte black unit, like the one that was bundled with last year's models.

No USB-A here, sadly

A Kensington Security Slot would not have gone amiss

Interestingly, the IdeaPad S340 comes with a physical privacy shutter for its 720p webcam. That means you won't have to go around sticking a piece of tape over the webcam lens for that added peace of mind. This is the cheapest Lenovo to get the privacy shutter. Until now the feature has been available only on the more expensive ThinkPad models.

Nifty little slider for the webcam ensures privacy and peace of mind

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard on the IdeaPad S340 is no different than the one on the IdeaPad 330S, and that's definitely a good thing because that unit wasn’t bad to start with. The keys possess a decent amount of resistance but could do with a bit more travel. Being a bit mushy, they could also do with a bit more ‘clickiness’. That said, they work well for long emails and documents all the same; you won’t find yourself mistyping too much along the way. In addition, there are two stages of backlighting for all your lowlight typing. In summary, the IdeaPad S340 sports a moderately comfortable keyboard.

Decent keyboard, borrowed from IdeaPad 330S

Unlike the touchpad on the cheaper IdeaPad S145, the one on the IdeaPad S340 is a Windows 10-recognised precision unit. This means the pointer’s movement is natural and linear. It also means multi-finger taps and swipes work right out of the box. All of the touchpad’s settings can be changed in Windows Settings without installing a third-party driver or utility. The two click keys under the touchpad’s smooth, smudge-free surface are fairly easy to click as long as you press within the lower half section of the touchpad.

Precision touchpad, unlike on the cheaper IdeaPad S145

Build and Design

This is one department in which the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 excels without a trace of doubt. Lenovo has basically taken everything that’s nice and clean in last year’s IdeaPad 330S and incorporated it in the new IdeaPad S340. It has also shaved off body thickness by 1.05mm. As a result, Lenovo’s refreshed mid-ranger looks neat and modern. The base panel ditches the curvy chins for a crisper, more ‘ThinkBook’-like look. The slim black bezels around the display continue to look slim. What’s more, there’s that privacy shutter for the webcam that we covered earlier.

Anodised aluminium top cover offers ample grip

While the top cover of the IdeaPad S340 is made of anodised aluminium, the base panel is made of plastic with soft paint coated on top. Surprisingly, the difference hardly shows when you’re carrying the device around in the hands. The IdeaPad S340 appears to be a rigid and durable machine with little flex on the lid and almost no flex on the keyboard island, so it should survive the occasional scratch (or drop, if you're lucky). There’s ample grip all around too. The display on the IdeaPad S340 goes all the way back to 180 degrees, which should make your in-bed computing sessions more comfortable. All things considered, the IdeaPad S340 is well engineered laptop for its price.

Display goes all the way back to 180 degrees

Bottom Line

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is practically last year's IdeaPad 330S with a few key upgrades: improved aesthetics (including a slimmer frame), that nifty little privacy shutter for the webcam, and extended battery life. Lenovo could have used this opportunity to throw in a brighter, more colourful Full HD IPS LCD panel as well. Unfortunately for us, our review unit was fitted with a hard drive (even though all of the variants on Lenovo's official website get a solid-state drive), which killed its performance across benchmark and everyday tests. I'm confident that the same laptop with Lenovo's PCIe NVMe solid-state drive offering would have done a lot better on the performance front.

Even if we don't take into account our review unit's middling performance, the IdeaPad S340 just about manages to live up to its most immediate competitors from Taiwan. The quality of the keyboard and display on the recently launched Asus VivoBook S431 is much better. The VivoBook X403, in fact, offers roughly eight hours of battery life for a similar price. The Lenovo IdeaPad S340, then, is for hardcore Lenovo fans who missed the bus last year with the IdeaPad 330S. But if you've already got the IdeaPad 330S with the same (or similar) configuration, then the upgrade to the IdeaPad S340 doesn't make any sense. Just tape that webcam shut and keep going.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy On Max is quite simply the best low light shooter in the sub-20K smartphone category. We wish the overall performance and battery life could be a shade better. However, if camera and especially low-light shooting is your top priority, the Samsung Galaxy On Max should definitely be in your consideration list for a 15-20K budget range.

Samsung Galaxy On Max detailed review

The Samsung Galaxy On Max is the latest addition to Samsung’s ever growing online only On series. The phone is derived from the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max and keeps most of the specifications and aesthetics intact. It has a new octa-core chipset and an improved camera. Going by what the Galaxy J7 Max was able to achieve, at the beginning of this review we expected the On Max to surpass that at least. Were we right, but let us take you through our full review and find out.

Build and Design
As I mentioned earlier, the On Max is actually a J7 Max with some new tricks up its sleeve, dressed in the same attire. So, there is nothing different in terms of design, build quality or even the ergonomics of the two phones. The back of the phone is wrapped in metal and the top and bottom portions are plastic with a metal finish. The phone looks and feels quite premium, but like most budget smartphones, slab-like. There is one thing missing from the On Max and that is the ring flash on the rear camera, absence of which we don’t mind, as the On Max offers superb camera capabilities for its price anyway (more on that later).

The larger footprint also takes some time settling into your palms, but you won't mind adjusting your grip to reach the volume rocker over time. The home-cum-fingerprint scanner remains at the bottom centre, with the recents and back keys on either side. While there is nothing wrong with the setup, some people may find the physical home button, which you have to press down to go back to the home screen, a little unnatural compared to the rest of the navigation.

Display and UI
While the design remains largely borrowed from the J7 Max, the On Max does get a new display, posting an impressive score of 671 lux on our luminance meter. This is almost a 100 lux brighter than the J7 Max. It features decent colour reproduction as well as good viewing angles. Samsung could have provided its signature AMOLED display on the phone, but the 5.7-inch 1080p TFT display does the job well. Like the J7 Max, the On Max display also looks slightly washed out, but on day-to-day basis, that is something which a majority of people won't notice. The touch response is also accurate and smooth, and since this is a large display, videos and movie watching experience on the device is really good.

We also like the fact that the Samsung Galaxy On Max comes with the Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, which most smartphone OEMs, especially in the budget segment are ignoring. The UI though, looks pretty similar to what we have seen on previous Samsung devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the J7 Max.

It’s good that Samsung is maintaining that minimal aesthetic look, that we have grown to like, but we would also like to point out that Samsung is still duplicating apps. You still get proprietary mail and browser apps, which aren’t necessary. There are two different app stores on the phone, including Galaxy Apps and Google Play. Apps like S health, Samsung Pay Mini and secure folder, which are actually quite good are behind Samsung’s account login. So, to use them you would have make yet another account. We are not saying this is an issue with the On Max, but with all Samsung phones, and the problem could have been resolved by just allowing users to login via their pre-registered Google account.

In addition to all this Samsung also has face unlock on this phone, which is not as safe as your fingerprint scanner. Moreover, it works only if there is ample ambient light.

Performance and Battery
If you have already gone through our Galaxy J7 max review by now, then you would know its performance left us wanting. Samsung has tried to overcome the slow performance of the MediaTek Helio P20 using a newer, more powerful Helio P25 Lite. This SoC shares its octa-core setup with the P20 only, but packs a better punch. Now, the performance is still behind devices running the Qualcomm SD652, like the Coolpad Cool 1, but it does catch up to the most SD625 powered devices.

Combined with 4GB of RAM, the On Max provides smooth performance with few occasional lags. So, whether you are editing images on Snapseed or just scrolling through Facebook, the phone does the job well. Gaming performance and the graphics quality have improved and this is easily visible in synthetic benchmarks. Although, don't expect super fast app loading.

The performance however, comes at the cost of battery life. While the 3300mAh battery is well optimised to work for efficiency, the Helio P25 still drains more battery than the P20. In our PCMark battery test, the phone lasted for just 6 hours and three minutes. Using it as a daily driver, we observed that the phone would last even a heavy user an entire work day from dusk till dawn. Although, one might have to constrain their gaming sessions to let the phone survive the day. However, if you are just streaming a few episodes of your favorite show, the phone would get by just fine.

Camera
While battery life is good enough, the rear camera on the Samsung Galaxy On Max is just superb. Samsung is using a 13MP rear camera setup with f/1.7 aperture. This, combined with the new camera, captures well detailed images in all lighting conditions. While images taken during the day are amongst the best in its category, the On Max really shines in low light conditions. In low light, the f/1.7 aperture comes into the play in full force and Samsung’s new camera algorithm works overtime. However, in our tests we found that in low light the camera performs better if you switch to Pro mode, since the camera has the tendency to brighten the image, which may not be suited for all low light conditions. We also observed a slight posterization effect in some low light images, which happens due to the aggressive algorithm, that smoothes noise. This means that the On Max is really good for taking silhouettes. (Note: All images have been resized to fit)

That being said, there is a focus locking issue we find is persistent while shooting macro in low light conditions. The camera tends to shift focus to infinity and is unable lock focus on the small subject in the foreground. White balance and dynamic range remains impressive in all situations, so that is one less worry. Moreover, Samsung phones have a tendency to make images slightly warmer, which is not exactly an accurate representation, but is something many would like.

Samsung has also made some improvements to the video department, with better video stabilization and swift autofocus. The autofocus in videos struggles during the night, which is understandable. The front facing camera on the phone is also good and features a 13MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture. It takes detailed images, adding a slight warm tone it. You also get a front facing flash for low light selfies, but that is not very helpful in pitch dark conditions.

Bottomline
So, The Samsung Galaxy On Max finally evens out the playing field, something the Galaxy J7 couldn't do. It has one of the best rear cameras we have seen in the sub-20K category, especially in low light conditions. Although, we would have loved it more if the camera could have provided more consistent focus in low light conditions. We believe Samsung can fix this with a simple software update.

Samsung’s efforts to offer Android Nougat out-of-the-box are also appreciated, but we would love to see less Samsung bloatware in times to come. As for the performance and battery life, we believe both are satisfactory and will get the job done on a day-to-day basis. We don't have any complaints about the design, build and feel of the phone.

How it compares

A few weeks back when we reviewed the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max, we found its imaging performance to rival the Moto G5 Plus - a de facto recommendation in the sub-20k segment. However, the J7 Max was not a competent phone on overall terms, and that is what Samsung Galaxy On Max intends to change. While it maintains its good camera quality, it seemingly falters much lesser than the J7 Max in terms of overall performance.

With that, while the Moto G5 Plus is a much better overall smartphone, the Galaxy On Max is the better shooter of the two, by a slight margin. All this makes the Galaxy On Max one of the best phones to buy under Rs. 20,000.

How To Make Potato Nuggets?

For the recipe, take boiled and mashed potatoes in a bowl, take some mashed left-over rice, then some bread crumbs, chilli flakes, oregano, garlic cloves, salt as per taste, butter, black pepper powder. Mix everything well, then add coriander leaves, green chillies, corn flour or arrowroot. Make a thick mixture, and cut rectangular potato nuggets using a knife. A dietitian has revealed how tweaking your diet with simple food swaps can make a huge difference to your calorie intake.

Paula Norris, from Brisbane, shared a picture of two nearly identical stir fries with basmati rice - but one dish contains 245 calories more than the other.

The nutrition expert explained how making just a few changes to the ingredients can cut the dish from 683 to 438 calories by reducing the portion size of chicken and rice, doubling the amount of vegetables and substituting honey for lime juice.

'Eating more volume for the same or even less calories is key for satiety,' Paula, who has more than 114,000 followers on Instagram, wrote.

'As you can see, a few small tweaks and you can save calories whilst maintaining protein at a level that will keep you full and increase your micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) intake through more vegetables.'

Paula noted there was nothing wrong with the dish with 683 calories but she suggested avoiding using added sugars in sauces where possible.

'Of course the one on the right is also okay especially if you have higher calorie requirements,' she explained.

'Although I do think it's always a good idea to try and avoid added sugars in stir fry sauces if you can. I prefer to have my added sugar in the form of some chocolate.'

Many praised her for sharing her comparisons, with one woman saying: 'I have started eating more and more like this because of your posts and I am enjoying it so much. It makes your body feel better afterwards and not bloated or like you're missing out.'

A second woman said: 'This is great. I always feel like I need to use more meat in things as that will be the filling component. So it's a good reminder to think about the volume of veggies.'

Paula is known for illustrating the surprising comparisons in a graph to show people exactly what calories look like in similar foods.

Last month, the dietitian illustrated how the calories in your meals can vary by huge amounts without you even noticing (pictured: Two different versions of Paula's lunches)

Last month, she explained how a simple salad with chicken and rice can be cut from 900 to 600 calories by substituting some of the meat for black beans, and having a smaller portion of higher calorie ingredients such as avocado.

'Spot the difference between these two dishes,' Paula said.

'I have always been a hungry human. So here's an example of what I do so that I don't go overboard on the calories whilst still getting plenty of food.'

Paula added that the meal on the left side of the post contains a staggering 900 calories, while the one on the left boasts just 600 calories.

The differences between the meals include varying amounts of chicken breast, oil, rice, avocado and pumpkin seeds - as well as the addition of black beans in the more low cal version of the two dishes.

'On the left, there is 200 grams of chicken breast cooked in two teaspoons of oil, one cup of rice, half a carrot, half a cup of lettuce, one cucumber, six cherry tomatoes, half an avocado and two teaspoons of pumpkin seeds,' she explained.

'On the right, there is just 100 grams of chicken breast cooked in one teaspoon of oil, 100 grams of black beans, 1/2 cup of rice, one carrot, one cup of lettuce, two cucumbers, eight cherry tomatoes, a quarter of an avocado and one teaspoon of pumpkin seeds.'

Paula added: 'Of course, the one on the left is also okay, especially if you have higher calorie requirements.'

VK Sasikala May Exit Bengaluru Jail On January 27; Could Be This Month, Says Lawyer

VK Sasikala May Exit Jail On January 27; Could Be This Month, Says Lawyer

A reply under Right to Information by the prison gives January 27 as the probable date of VK Sasikala's release if she pays the fine. If she doesn't, she will be released on February 27, 2022, they say.

VK Sasikala May Exit Jail On January 27; Could Be This Month, Says Lawyer

VK Sasikala, 69, was sent to jail for four years in 2017 in a corruption case.

Chennai:

VK Sasikala, sacked AIADMK chief and a close aide of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, is likely to be released from a jail in Bengaluru on January 27. A reply under Right to Information by the prison gives this as the probable date of her release if she pays the fine. If she doesn't, she will be released on February 27, 2022, they say.

But Sasikala's lawyer Rajasenthur Pandian is confident that she will be released as early as the 27th of this month. "On good behaviour every prisoner is eligible for three days of remission for every month and this way, for the 43 months she has served so far, her term would be reduced by 129 days. There is no reason to deny her that," he told NDTV.

He added that police chiefs could also pardon 30 or 60 days based on the prisoner's track record, if two-thirds of the jail term has been served.

Sasikala, 69, was sent to jail for four years in 2017 in a corruption case in which Jayalalithaa - who died in 2016 -- was the accused No 1. She has to pay a fine of Rs 10 crore and 10 lakh according to a court order, which Mr Pandian says is ready.

On the allegations of rules being bent or violated by Sasikala, who even stepped out of jail and enjoyed extra rooms and TV, Mr Pandian said: "This RTI reply proves there is no truth in that. A probe team has given her a clean chit. Adjoining cells were left free by jail authorities to ensure her safety based on intelligence inputs. It was not her fault."

If her lawyer is to be believed, Sasikala will be freed just before the Tamil Nadu election next year and may therefore become a key political factor in the polls. Having been convicted, she cannot contest elections for two more years.

In the months after the death of Jayalalithaa in office, Sasikala took charge of the ruling AIADMK and even made attempts to take over as Chief Minister until she was sentenced to jail.

Before she went to prison, Sasikala handpicked her then-loyalist E Palanisamy or EPS as Chief Minister, unseating O Panneerselvam (OPS), who had taken over after Jayalalithaa's death.

She also established her nephew TTV Dhinakaran as number 2 in the party.

Over the past four years, a lot has changed. EPS and OPS patched up and threw Sasikala out of the party. OPS settled for Deputy Chief Minister and became the coordinator of the party, with EPS as joint coordinator in a new collective leadership model.

The AIADMK's symbol went to them in a court battle against TTV Dhinakaran. While Mr Dhinakaran won Jayalalithaa's assembly seat RK Nagar in Chennai, he could not expand his footprint beyond that even after launching a new party, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam.

Though EPS is firmly settled in the top post, his former mentor Sasikala's return could shake up the ruling party if any of her loyalists - be it ministers or MLAs -- were to cross sides. The party recently witnessed a tug-of-war after posters projected him as chief ministerial candidate for the 2021 polls.

Surfers call on GWR to review board-on-trains ban - BBC News

Surfers call on GWR to review board-on-trains ban

By Emma Hallett
BBC News

image captionMr Monson said: “When everyone is trying to make trains a useful way to get around, the rail line that services the South West, is seemingly the only one that will not take surfboards, which just seems absolutely crazy."
Surfers are calling on Great Western Railway to review its policy banning surfboards on trains.
It comes after one surfer said police were called when he was told to leave a train travelling from London to Bristol because he had a board with him.
Jamie Monson said the policy was “crazy”, especially when rail travel is being encouraged.
GWR changed its policy early last year stating surfboards were not be allowed on its intercity express trains.
The company said the new trains no longer had space behind the engine, where boards had previously been stored, to enable them to provide extra seating.
Mr Monson was bound for surfing lake The Wave, a 180m long lake, which opened in Bristol in November, before the coronavirus lockdown saw it shut for more than four months.

image captionMr Monson said he has travelled by train all over the UK with his surfboard
Lake founder Nick Hounsfield said: “There is a real opportunity to encourage surfers to use trains, not only for travelling to The Wave but for accessing the whole of the south-west, if they review their thinking around surfboards.”
He spoke out after Jamie Monson, 41, from Stoke Newington, north London, was due to visit The Wave on Friday. But when he went to board the 07:23 BST train from Paddington he was asked to leave.
He said: “The trains at the moment are almost completely empty. I slotted my board in a luggage area, there was plenty of room.
“Then a train guard and two police officers turned up. I tried to reason with them, but they demanded I left the train.”
Mr Monson said he has travelled by train all over the UK with his board.
He missed his session and was able to re-book, but he will now be travelling by car.

image captionThe Wave agreed with Mr Monson saying there is a 'real opportunity' to encourage surfers to use trains
“The number of people travelling to The Wave or the south-west to surf is a big number and everybody is now forced to use a car. It’s just craziness,” he said.
A spokesman for GWR said: “We cannot take surfboards on long-distance trains because there is no feasible, safe storage space on board.
“Surfboards can be taken on our Night Riviera sleeper service from London to Penzance, which has different seating demands and space set aside for storage. We also continue to carry surfboards on local stopping services.”

Indian-Origin Author Avni Doshi Among Six Others On Booker Prize 2020 List

The shortlist was unveiled virtually in London on Tuesday after judges re-evaluated the 13 longlisted novels published in the UK or Ireland between October 2019 and September 2020 to whittle down the shortlist for the GBP 50,000 literary prize in November.

Indian-Origin Author Avni Doshi Among Six Others On Booker Prize 2020 List

Avni Doshi has previously spoken about the long journey to her first novel.

London:

Dubai-based Indian-origin author Avni Doshi is among the six authors shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize for her debut novel 'Burnt Sugar''.

The shortlist was unveiled virtually in London on Tuesday after judges re-evaluated the 13 longlisted novels published in the UK or Ireland between October 2019 and September 2020 to whittle down the shortlist for the GBP 50,000 literary prize in November.

"This utterly compelling read examines a complex and unusual mother-daughter relationship with honest, unflinching realism - sometimes emotionally wrenching but also cathartic, written with poignancy and memorability," the judges said of Avni Doshi's entry.

Avni Doshi, born in the US and now living in Dubai, has previously spoken about the long journey to her first novel, which was released in India last year as 'Girl in White Cotton' and for its UK release in July.

The rest of the shortlist includes Diane Cook for "The New Wilderness", Zimbabwean writer Tsitsi Dangarembga for the third novel in her trilogy - 'This Mournable Body', Maaza Mengiste for "The Shadow King", Douglas Stuart for "Shuggie Bain'' and Brandon Taylor for "Real Life''.

Literary heavyweight and former double Booker winner Hilary Mantel, in the running for her final installment in her series set in King Henry VIII''s 16th century England ''The Mirror and the Light'', failed to make the shortlist cut.

"The shortlist of six came together unexpectedly, voices and characters resonating with us all even when very different. We are delighted to help disseminate these chronicles of creative humanity to a global audience," said Margaret Busby, literary critic and chair of the 2020 judges.

"As judges, we read 162 books, many of them conveying important, sometimes uncannily similar and prescient messages," she said.

"The best novels often prepare our societies for valuable conversations, and not just about the inequities and dilemmas of the world - whether in connection with climate change, forgotten communities, old age, racism, or revolution when necessary - but also about how magnificent the interior life of the mind, imagination and spirit is, in spite of circumstance," she said.

The organisers said that readers of the chosen books will travel to India to unpick an unsettling mother-daughter relationship redefined by dementia with Avni Doshi's entry; explore the tender story of a mother's battle to save her daughter in a dystopian city made inhospitable by the climate crisis; witness a woman confronting the realities of life and morality in Zimbabwe as she descends into poverty.

They will uncover the extraordinary tales of the African women who went to war during Italy's 1935 invasion of Ethiopia; find humanity and humour in the harsh realities experienced by a marginalised family in 1980s Glasgow; and question what 'real-life'' is in a fresh take on the campus novel, which offers a nuanced account of racism and homophobia.

Gaby Wood, Literary Director of the Booker Prize Foundation, said: "Every year, judging the Booker Prize is an act of discovery. What's out there, how can we widen the net, how do these books seem when compared to one another, how do they fare when re-read? These are questions judges always ask themselves, and each other.

"This year there has perhaps been more discovery than usual, both in the sense that debut novels are in the majority and due to the fact that the judges themselves were surprised to find that was the case. Why were they surprised? They were focussing on the books," she said.

"No one wins the Booker Prize because of who they are. A book wins because of what it does. What has transpired is a testament to the judges'' faith in - among other things - first fictions: they have found these writers to have much to say, and found them to have said it in a way that became even richer on second reading."

The Booker Prize for Fiction is open to writers of any nationality, writing in English and published in the UK or Ireland. The shortlist of six books will be announced on September 15, with each shortlisted authors receiving 2,500 pounds and a specially bound edition of their book at the prize ceremony scheduled for November.

The 2019 Booker Prize for Fiction was won jointly by "The Testaments'' by Margaret Atwood and 'Girl, Woman, Other' by Bernardine Evaristo. First awarded in 1969, the Booker Prize is recognised as the leading prize for literary fiction written in English.

The rules of the prize were changed at the end of 2013 to embrace the English language "in all its vigour, its vitality, its versatility and its glory", opening it up to writers beyond the UK and Commonwealth, providing they were writing novels in English and published in the UK.

Lenovo Ideapad S145 detailed review

Last year, Lenovo's line-up of IdeaPad laptops was spread across the price band quite evenly but the naming was a touch confusing. In the budget and mid-range segments, we had the IdeaPad 330 and IdeaPad 330S, two very similar-sounding model names but different in construction, quality, and performance. In the upper mid-range segment was the IdeaPad 530S, which we noted in our review had noteworthy performance combined with classy design. What about this year?

In this year's ‘40’ series of IdeaPad ‘S’ models, we have the IdeaPad S540, which is, in a manner of speaking, a successor to the IdeaPad 530S. Sitting just below it is the IdeaPad S340, which, surprisingly, comes with features like a privacy shutter for the webcam. On the bottom rung, we have the IdeaPad S145: a proper 15.6-inch budget model that starts at Rs 26,990, with either an Intel or AMD chip fitted to it. Let's take a closer look.

Performance

Though the new IdeaPad S145 is offered with up to an AMD Ryzen 5 3000-series processor on Lenovo's official website, our review unit came with an Intel Core i3-8145U CPU (the Whiskey Lake refresh from last year) with 4GB of RAM. Storage was taken care of by a WD Blue 1TB hard drive spinning at 5,400rpm. Needless to say, there was no discrete graphics card on board; only the Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated GPU. According to the hardware maintenance manual published by Lenovo, the 4GB of onboard memory can be expanded up to a maximum of 12GB by adding an 8GB  DDR4 RAM chip.

Intel 8th Gen Core i3 CPU paired with a platry 4GB RAM and slow hard drive

The review unit fared decently on our CPU and GPU benchmarks. At least its scores were better than those of the IdeaPad 330 and IdeaPad 330S from last year. On PCMark 8’s Conventional Creative test, the review unit bagged 2805 points, which is nearly three times over the IdeaPad 330’s score and nearly 300 points more than the IdeaPad 330S’ on the same test. The scores were similar on PCMark 8’s Conventional Home and Work tests. On 3DMark’s Fire Strike and Sky Diver, the review unit picked up 796 and 3385 points respectively.

Everyday performance of the IdeaPad S145 review unit was woefully bad, but I can confidently chalk that up to the low RAM and sluggish hard drive inside. The laptop took well over two minutes to cold-boot to the Windows 10 desktop and be fully ready for use. The Start menu took over six seconds to pop up on an average. There were constant stutters and window freezes while using everyday applications like Chrome, File Explorer, and OneNote one at a time. Maximising a window would sometimes take up to five seconds to happen, and the contents inside would get stretched and distorted in the process. Even a single YouTube video in the foreground would often stutter and stammer.

In summary, the IdeaPad S145 is an unbearably sluggish device if you use it with the bundled 4GB RAM and hard drive. I highly recommend you purchase a variant with 8GB RAM minimum and a solid-state drive if you plan to use your laptop for everyday work. If you’ve already bought it in the same configuration as our review unit, consider upping the RAM to 8GB and replacing the hard drive with a SATA III solid-state drive. A 256GB unit shouldn’t cost you over Rs 5,000. These two upgrades will go a long way in improving the everyday performance of this laptop.

Battery

On our standard battery benchmark test, the IdeaPad S145 review unit scored 3 hours, 16 minutes, which is approximately a forty-minute advantage over the scores bagged by the IdeaPad 330 and IdeaPad 330S from last year. On everyday tests, where the screen is set to 70 percent brightness and Bluetooth + Wi-Fi are enabled, the laptop lost 42 percent of its charge in roughly two hours. Charging from 36 percent to about 95 took roughly one and a half hours. During the tests, multiple instances of Chrome, OneNote, File Explorer were open alongside WhatsApp for PC. In summary, the 35Wh dual-cell lithium-ion polymer battery inside the IdeaPad S145 appears to be an ideal companion for fairly long stretches of continuous operation away from the wall socket. Expect up to three and a half hours of continuous use on this laptop.

Display, Audio, and IO

The IdeaPad S145 features a 15.6-inch non-touchscreen display with Full HD resolution and 220 nits of maximum brightness. According to Lenovo, the screen is capable of covering 45 percent of an unspecified colour space (though we think its sRGB). In reality, colours on the screen appear totally washed out, leaving the white of the backlight to burn through brightly. In addition, the matte finish on the screen creates a grainy effect on the screen, thereby making the viewing experience worse. Tilting the display down by even a few degrees renders text on the screen unreadable. In summary, the IdeaPad S145’s display isn’t a great one for image/video-focussed work. That said, it’ll do the job for the occasional spreadsheet or document.

Full HD display but colours are weak

The IdeaPad S145 sports two tiny speakers on its lower front lip, which deliver flat, uninspiring sound despite the Dolby badging (and the bundled Dolby Audio app). The maximum volume is insufficient even for the occasional two-minute YouTube watch and the sound is mostly flat across lows, mids, and highs, leaving the pair best used for Windows error sounds and message notifications. You’re better off investing in a pair of headphones or portable wired speakers if you want clear audio.

Weak sound as well

The IdeaPad S145 has most of its ports on the left side of its body, which should prove convenient for right-handed mouse users. On the left, there’s a proprietary round-pin power port for charging, a full-size HDMI port, a USB-A 2.0 port, and a couple of USB-A 3.1 ports. On the right side, all we see are a full-size SD Card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack for headsets. Being a budget model, the laptop skips the increasingly ubiquitous USB-C port. It also does not have a fingerprint scanner. Images from the VGA webcam are understandably grainy and pixelated.

Ports on the left...

...and ports on the right...

Keyboard and Touchpad

The IdeaPad S145’s keyboard is not particularly comfortable—but it’s not particularly uncomfortable either. The entire keyboard island and individual keycaps are mildly convex in shape in that they bulge upwards at the centre. This is the exact opposite of what laptop manufacturers usually do to offer a more comfortable typing experience, i.e., create a cupped design (for easier key identification). In the IdeaPad S145’s case, this is done presumably to maintain rigidity across the keyboard island. On the plus side, the numpad section includes dedicated keys for media playback, i.e., play/pause, next track, and previous track. If anything, I wish the keys were backlit but that’s a bit much to ask for from a laptop of this price range.

Dedicated media playback keys above numpad

Because it’s not a Windows 10-recognised precision unit, the touchpad is sluggish and uneven in tracking the movement of the pointer across the screen. The acceleration of the pointer too varies with the direction of the fingertip movement, making for an unpleasant touchpad experience. A triple-tap opens up Windows Search by default and Windows Settings only lets you adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad unit. Surprisingly, the click buttons under the touchpad’s plain plastic surface have great feel. All things considered, you’re better off getting yourself a wired or wireless USB mouse.

Touchpad is non-precision unit but click works well

Build and Design

The IdeaPad S145 uses plastic in its construction in a manner that’s similar to last year’s IdeaPad 330. The laptop’s top cover and keyboard island have a glossy plasticky finish with a mild brushed design in plain silver. Not only does this lend the device a toyish look, but it also makes it less grippy in the user’s hands, especially while taking it out of a backpack in a hurry. Luckily, the keycaps, hinges, base panel, and screen bezels use a darker shade for some contrast and thus improved visual appeal.

Glossy plastic top cover could do with a matte finish for more class and grip

The Lenovo badge on the top cover of the IdeaPad S145 is a refreshed single-sticker unit that sits flush with the lid's surface. Opening and closing the lid from one side reveals quite a bit of flex on the lid's surface. The same is observed on the keyboard island when the keys are tapped on hard. On the plus side, the laptop's lid opens out to a maximum of 180 degrees (like the more expensive ThinkPad range). What's more, the laptop's power brick is now integrated with the wall plug, making the entire charging kit more portable and appealing. All things considered, the IdeaPad S145 looks and feels decent for a laptop of its price range although a matte finish all around would have been better appreciated for reasons of grip and overall appearance.

Display folds all the way back

Bottom Line

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145, in its current configuration of an Intel 8th Gen Core i3 CPU, 4GB RAM, and a 1TB hard drive, is not terrible value for its Amazon.in-listed price of Rs 32,990. But you still shouldn't buy it unless you intend to use it for extremely basic computing (like checking email occasionally or watching offline videos). It's unfit for multitasking and serious web use. We recommend you upgrade the RAM to 8GB and replace its sluggish hard drive with a solid-state drive before using it for serious work. Alternatively, pick a variant of the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 with those upgrades at the time of purchase.

Gov’t preparing team to inspect sinking Nabarima vessel

Gov't preparing team to inspect sinking Nabarima vessel

Dr Amery Browne -
Dr Amery Browne -

MINISTER of Foreign and Caricom Affairs Dr Amery Browne said TT is preparing an inspection team to visit the vessel Nabarima to confirm if the sinking ship poses any threat. The sinking tanker, which is permanently docked between Venezuela and TT has nearly 1.1 million barrels of crude oil stored in it.

Reports from international media outlets said the extent of the damage vessel is uncertain. On Tuesday, Browne told Newsday that the government has been in constant communication with the Venezuelan authorities who have indicated that the vessel is secured.

He said, “At present the TT government has accepted an offer from Venezuela to send an inspection team and we are working on the details of that, so that we can be satisfied with the representations made by Venezuela that the vessel has been properly repaired and poses no danger to the environment.”

Browne was unable to indicate when the TT inspection team will be ready to go to Venezuela. But, fear and anxiety looms over the heads of fishermen from Carli Bay to Cedros who claimed they were yet to receive an update from the government on the status of the sinking Nabarima vessel in the Gulf of Paria.

Cedros councillor Shankar Teelucksingh who spoke on behalf of the fishermen told Newsday on Tuesday that the issue was raise several week ago, but the authorities seemed unconcerned.

He said, “Our hands are tied but the Prime Minister and the Ministers of National Security and Energy have very close links and cordial relationships with the Maduro government. And well, if the Maduro government is telling them they have it under control, then okay.

“But we do not trust that. All of TT should be concerned because it is an environment hazard that threatens livelihoods, in an already tough economic situation.”

Teelucksingh believed it was environmental disaster waiting to happen and has accused the government of dragging their feet on the matter. He explained that it was out of his MP’s hands at this point because of the involvement of international territories.

He said, “We are not hearing anything from the authorities who are our watchdogs. Their lips are sealed, and they are being irresponsible.

“We are voicing our concerns to save our communities, but the PM and the minister of national security tend to bump their gums and not address the recommendations.”

Teelucksingh said the fishermen were not surprised by the lack of interest by the authorities, since they suffered an oil spill last month and were yet to receive and redress.

“We are still awaiting the fingerprint on that oil spill which usually takes about seven days, but here we are today with no communication on the matter. That spill has cause 38 vessels to dock and left 38 families struggling to meet their needs in an already hard economy,” he noted.

Activist group Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS) has been lobbying for intervention through co-operation from international organisations. FFOS general secretary Gary Aboud said he wrote to the local authorities, the US Ambassador and the European Union for help, but to date his letters have gone unanswered.

Amarinder Singh Meets Governor To Stop Agri Bills, Akalis Meet BJP Chief
Chandigarh:

The row over the three Central agriculture bills in Punjab got intense today with both ruling Congress and the opposition Akali Dal  trying to placate the angry farmers. While Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met Governor VP Singh Badnore, the Akalis made a beeline for BJP chief JP Nadda.

Amarinder Singh submitted a memorandum to the Governor, seeking his intervention to stop the laws, which farmers say will hurt their interests.

Mr Singh told the Governor that any move to tinker with the current procurement system amid the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis, may increase the unrest among the farmers. He also said it "may not be conducive for the peace and development of the region, which faces serious challenges of public order due to a live international border".

He also termed the Shiromani Akali Dal's sudden U-turn over the laws, calling it a "farce". In face of the wrath of farmers, the Akalis claimed yesterday that they had not been consulted about the ordinances and the corresponding bills.

Farmers across Punjab and Haryana have been on the warpath against the ordinances brought on June 5 -- The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020.

On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which seeks to deregulate food items, including cereals, pulses and onion.

The farmers have warned that any MP from the state who support these bills will not be allowed to enter the villages.

The three bills related to agriculture introduced by the Modi government in Parliament will boost production and help farmers get better prices for the produce, BJP president J P Nadda said on Wednesday.

Underlining that farmers are at the core of the government's policies, Nadda, addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, said all three farm sector bills are far-sighted and will boost agriculture production.

When asked about the minimum support price (MSP), the BJP leader asserted that it would continue to stay.

The government on Monday introduced 'The Farmers' Produce Trade And Commerce (Promotion And Facilitation) Bill', 'The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill', and 'The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill' to replace the ordinances promulgated earlier.

These bills will help farmers get betters price for their produce through a transparent system, Nadda said.

Taking on the Congress, he said the party's opposition to the bills was nothing but politics. The BJP is doing what the opposition party had promised in its manifesto, Nadda added.

Lok Sabha passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 on Tuesday via a voice vote.

On the issue of the Akali Dal, an ally of the BJP, opposing the bill, Nadda said, "We have spoken to Akali Dal and have addressed its concerns."

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Badal had voted against the bill.

PM Couldn't-Care-Less Fund: Trinamool Congress Derek O'Brien Dig In Parliament

"PM's Couldn't-Care-Less Fund": Trinamool's Dig In Parliament

Derek O'Brien said the government had announced a 21-day lockdown with just four-hour notice and "no preparation".

Government needs humility to work with states to fight Covid-19, says Derek O'Brien.

New Delhi:

Attacking the government over the coronavirus crisis during a discussion in parliament, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien today mocked the PM-CARES fund as "PM's Couldn't-Care-Less fund" and said the centre "needs humility" to work with states.

"This government needs humility to work with states to fight Covid-19. You must not use pandemic to convert democracy into an autocracy," the Trinamool member said in the Rajya Sabha, during a discussion on the Covid pandemic.

Mr O'Brien said the government had announced a 21-day lockdown with just four-hour notice and "no preparation".  He also alleged that the centre did not take state governments into confidence while making decisions on the virus outbreak.

At one point, he quipped - "The most opaque, dark fund in the world. It is called the Prime Minister's Couldn't-Care-Less Fund" and then added, "Oh I said the name wrong, OK!"

PM-CARES or the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund was set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March to "deal with emergency or distress situations like the coronavirus pandemic". It is managed by a trust with PM Modi as its chairperson and senior cabinet members as trustees.

The opposition has repeatedly demanded an audit of the fund, saying it lacks accountability and transparency.

Mr O'Brien also hit out at Union Health Minister's statement in parliament yesterday.

Minister Harsh Vardhan, thanking PM Modi, said the nationwide lockdown, community involvement and other step prevented up to 38,000 deaths and 29 lakh COVID-19 cases in the country. He also said that government efforts have been able to limit coronavirus numbers to 3,328 cases and 55 deaths per million population, which is one of the lowest in the world.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is a jack of all trades, but master of none. As far as budget smartphones are concerned, this is one of the most dependable phones out there.

Xiaomi Mi A1 detailed review

A tie up with Google has usually been seen as a stepping stone for budding smartphone makers. But, Chinese Xiaomi is neither a budding smartphone maker, nor a stranger to Google tie-ups. I’ve personally asked the company, on multiple occasions, whether the Mi Box would ever make it to India, but that device has little relevance to India at the moment. What is relevant to the country though is Google’s Android One program. And joining this program puts Xiaomi in the unique position of leading the pack.

The Android One program seemed to have fizzled out since its announcement a couple of years ago. However, many would argue that Google chose the wrong partners to kick off the project. If that was indeed the case, the Xiaomi’s entry into the fray, with the Mi A1, should probably be enough to revive Android One. The company brings with it a viral quality, enthusiast support, growing reach and brand trust that Lava, Micromax and Karbonn probably never had.

On the other hand, the Mi A1 is a big deal for Xiaomi as well. It is the first time the company ditches its trusty MiUI platform, and also its first dual-camera phone in India. The Mi branding tells you that Xiaomi considers this amongst its premium devices, and the company says Android Oreo will be rolled out to this phone before 2017 is through. It is also the most powerful Android One phone ever, which is easy enough to do, but the Mi A1 review, presents us with a phone that is indeed tough to argue against. Xiaomi will sell this phone on its retail channels and Mi Homes, along with e-commerce websites.

Note: At the time of writing this review, we’ve had this device for about a week before launch, but the pricing details haven’t been revealed yet. Considering Xiaomi’s history, the inclusion of the Android One program, and the dual-camera, we’re operating under the assumption that the phone will be priced at Rs. 13,999. The Mi A1 is priced at Rs 14,999 and is available on Flipkart.

Stock Android on a Mi phone

While Xiaomi doesn’t actively promote MiUI anymore, the interface is a major part of the company’s ecosystem. Xiaomi’s fans often swear by it, despite the fact that Xiaomi chooses MiUI updates over Android updates, and that the UI is certainly heavier than a vanilla Android experience.

On the Mi A1, Xiaomi has kept only three apps from MiUI: the uber useful Mi remote app, the Mi Store and the Feedback app. Otherwise, with Android 7.1.2 out-of-the-box, this is Xiaomi’s most advanced (in terms of Android version) phone yet. The only other change is in the camera app and algorithm, which was necessary since Android doesn’t natively support dual-cameras just yet. Xiaomi says this won’t hamper the Oreo timeline mentioned above.

Running on stock Android eliminates some of the overheads on the processor and the phone presents a smooth and lag free experience on general day-to-day things. Apps load as expected and without many hiccups. However, in the past week or so, I have often felt that MiUI on a Redmi Note 4 felt smoother and better tuned. The Mi A1 is not all that different from the Note 4 in terms of specifications, so we will try to gain deeper insights into this via a comparison later.

As a standalone device though, the Mi A1 is as smooth as you expect a stock Android device to be and even faster than some. It’s not absolutely lag free, but then no budget device is that way either. The Mi A1 gets by with minimum lags and its UI performance is certainly above average.

Camera

Stock Android is not the only USP for this device. It’s also the only Android One phone to sport a dual-camera. There are two 12MP sensors on the back of this device, and Xiaomi refused to reveal the sensor details since it will be sourcing them from multiple sources. That means final camera quality on the device you buy may differ from our review sample.

Nevertheless, two cameras follow the iPhone’s telephoto and wide angle formula, offering 2x zoom and bokeh mode. There’s a “Stereo Mode” within the camera app for shooting bokeh shots, while you’ll find the family 1x/2x button for zooming seamlessly. The camera app is custom designed by Xiaomi and works seamlessly enough.

That said, we did slight details in auto-focus, which increases with deteriorating light conditions. As a result, low light photos can sometimes be blurry and they take considerable time to process. In fact, even with dual-cameras, the Mi A1 doesn’t really set a benchmark as far as camera prowess is concerned. It’s a good camera to work with, and will take good enough shots for sharing on social media, but don’t go expecting much more.

Stereo Mode

Xiaomi’s stereo mode is its take on Apple’s “portrait mode”, and its task is to blue the background. While this is done via a combination of hardware and software, the final effects are commendable most of the times. The problem is that the stereo mode only works when there’s ample light, meaning most night time shots will have to be taken using the auto mode only. While detail level and colours are quite good in this mode, this limits its usability severely.

Bokeh shot using the Stereo Mode on the Mi A1

Zoom

Xiaomi is promising you 2x optical zoom with this device, and the 1x/2x button is quite useful. It switches from the wide angle to the telephoto lens (56mm) seamlessly and the results are quite good. You see some noise when shooting indoors, but not enough to hamper image quality or lead to major loss of details. Again, social media sharing shouldn’t be an issue here.

Regular (Left) and 2x zoom (Right) from the Mi A1

Regular Shooting

When shooting in auto mode, the Mi A1 produces really sharp and well detailed photos in daylight conditions. However, it suffers from considerable noise and loss of detail in low light. It is also best used when shooting close up shots, with noticeable aberrations in longer range photos. Overall, the camera is decent, but nothing that would offset the status quo in the budget range.

Performance

With the Snapdragon 625 inside, this is the fastest Android One phone we’ve seen to date. As explained in the UI section above, the Mi A1 is lag free and sufficiently fast. It isn’t a powerhouse by any length of imagination, but it’s dependable to say the least. Gaming performance is good, with minor lags from time to time. The only real issue is that the phone heats up just enough for you to be uncomfortable while gaming for long periods. It would seem that Xiaomi’s thermal control algorithms on MiUI are better than Android’s native versions.

Either way, if you’re not a heavy gamer, this phone should cause you no troubles. Temperatures reached a maximum of 42 degrees celsius on the body, which is acceptable and not abnormal. It’s just not ideal.

Much like the camera, the Xiaomi Mi A1 produces functional performance levels and is dependable through and through. It just won’t qualify as “snappy”, which many budget buyers will perhaps not mind. Using shortcuts hotkeys is fast enough, while app load times and app performance are easily acceptable.

Display

A major difference between this phone and Xiaomi’s other phones is in the display quality. Colour tones are balanced, but lack the punch that we’ve come to expect from the company’s devices. It’s not a colourful display and feels somewhat sticky to touch. That’s not a deal breaker at all, but we’ve come to expect a little more from Xiaomi’s displays. Overall, you’re getting a balanced display that doesn’t miss touches, responds to commands fast and is just bright enough to be used under direct sunlight.

Battery

Xiaomi wants this device to be as cheap as it can be, so it’s not pushing the boundaries with battery capacity here. Alternatively, MiUI’s usual overheads aren’t present here, so the company probably thought that a 3050 mAh battery should be enough. In practical terms, that translates to just over 11 hours run times on PC Mark’s Work 2.0 battery test. That, ranks the Mi A1 amongst the better battery performers amongst budget devices.

In regular usage, like many other aspects of this phone, it’s a dependable performer with respect to battery life. You’ll need to charge it every night, but it should get by without much more, unless you’re playing games for hours and hours every day.

Build and Design

Last but not the least, we get to the most Xiaomi-like elements of this phone. From the back, the Mi A1 looks iPhone-like. The antenna lines run along the top and bottom edges, while the device is rounded at the corners. There are also thick plastic strips on all four sides of the display, with noticeable but not overtly large bezels below them.

The strip below the display holds backlit capacitive buttons, while the overall form factor and weight remain quite ergonomic. It’s not perfectly suited to single handed usage, but it won’t particularly fail you when you absolutely need to use it with one hand. The power button respects comfortably below your thumb (if you’re right handed), while the volume rocker can be reached easily. There’s a fingerprint sensor on the back and the phone’s entire construction is metallic.

As far as Android One phones are concerned, this is the most premium we’ve got so far. As far as budget phones are concerned, this is what we expect from budget devices today. Once again, the Mi A1 gives you just what you need, without pushing the boundaries in any way, something we’ve come to expect from Xiaomi over time. It’s not a rehashed design, but it’s not an entirely new one either.

Bottomline

Xiaomi’s Mi A1 is an Android One phone first and Xiaomi phone later. The promise of updated Android is something Xiaomi phones never give you, while the dual-camera keeps it in with the times. It’s not an underpowered and compromised device that the Android One program has produced so far. Instead, it’s a very dependable smartphone that you should certainly consider. It’s what Android One phones should have been from the very beginning.

How it compares

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is a jack of all trade, but master of none. It has a decent camera, but it is easily outperformed by the Moto G5 Plus or Samsung Galaxy J7 Max. It is a fluid performer and offers dependable battery life, but can be outperformed by the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. The emphasis here seems to be on keeping prices as low as possible, and if Xiaomi can his something below Rs. 13,999, this phone is a no brainer.

You’re not buying the best budget phone today, but you’re buying a phone that can stand the test of time and won’t let you down easily.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has sent a strong warning to 102 local government areas in 28 States.

Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) AVM Muhammadu A. Muhammad disclosed this at a flood advocacy to Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar in Dutse.

He said the Local Governments are in the higher risk of being devastated by flood due to their closeness to water ways in the country.

“While 275 Local Government Areas in the 36 States of the Federation including the Federal Capital Territory fall within the moderately probable flood risk areas, the remaining 397 Local Government areas fall within the low probable flood risk areas”

Muhammad noted that the predicted floods have started to occur in many parts of the country.

He therefore advised the Local Government to activate all plans and measures against the the prediction.

He, however, stated that the annual occurrence of flood have continued to threaten food production in the country.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday announced that the case of attack and murder involving cricketer Suresh Raina’s kin has been solved with the arrest of three members of an inter-state gang of robber-criminals.

Eleven other accused are yet to be arrested, DGP Dinkar Gupta said, giving details of the arrests in the case which took place on the night of 19th August in Village Tharyal of PS Shahpurkandi, District Pathankot.

Raina’s uncle Ashok Kumar, a contractor, had died on the spot, while his son Kaushal Kumar succumbed to injuries on 31st August and wife Asha Rani is in hospital in critical condition. Two others injured in the attack had been discharged from the hospital.

Soon after the incident, the Chief Minister had ordered the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under IGP Border Range Amritsar, with SSP Pathankot, SP Investigation and DSP Dhar Kalan as its members, to investigate the case thoroughly and expeditiously

The SIT, during the investigation, gathered all the circumstantial and physical evidence related to the case (FIR No. 153 dt. 20.08.2020 U/S 460/459/ 458 IPC PS Shapur Kandi, with Section 302, 307, 148, 149 IPC added by the SIT during the investigation). More than 100 suspected persons were joined in the investigation, according to the DGP.

On September 15, the SIT received information that three suspects, who were seen at the Defence Road on the morning after the incident, were staying in Jhuggis near the Pathankot Railway Station. A raid was conducted and all three were nabbed.

According to the DGP, a gold ring bearing AK, one Ladies Ring, one Ladies Gold chain and Rs. 1530/- was recovered, along with two wooden sticks, were recovered from the arrested accused, identified as Sawan @ Matching, Muhobbat and Shahrukh Khan, currently residents of Chirawa and Pilani jhuggis, District Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

Initial investigation has revealed that they were operating as a gang along with others and had committed several such crimes earlier in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and various parts of Punjab, moving to the crime spots in groups of 2-3 following the natural landmarks like Canals, railway lines, high voltage electricity wires, etc.

Sawan, originally a native of Uttar Pradesh, has told the SIT that on 12th August, they had moved as a group from Chirawa and Pilani in an auto (PB 02 G 9025), owned by one Nausau, also living in the Chirawa jhuggis. Nausau accompanied the trio, along with Rashid, Rehan, Jabrana, Waphila, Tawajjal Bibi and an unknown person.

They reached Jagraon, Ludhiana, where they were joined by three others Reenda, Golu and Sajan. They purchased an Aari, 02 pliers and one screwdriver from a hardware shop and a few Kacha Banyan (undergarments) from a garment shop in Ludhiana. They left for Pathankot after committing a robbery in Jagraon on the night of 14th August.

In Pathankot, one Sanju, who knew the area well, also joined them, said the DGP, adding that the gang conducted a recce of the area, according to Pathankot SSP Gulneet Khurana.

On the night of 19th August, at around 7-8 pm, they moved in groups of 2-3 persons, as per their modus operandi, and reached a designated spot in the open field where Rashid, Nausau and Sanju @ Chajju went to bring wooden sticks which they cut from Safeda (Eucalyptus) tree.

During recce, they had already identified a shuttering shop, where the bamboo ladders were tied up using chains. The first two houses where they put the ladders turned out to be a godown and an empty home, while the third was of Ashok Kumar. Five of the accused entered the house using the ladder from the side of the roof, where they saw three people lying on the mats. The suspects hit them on the head before moving into the house, where they attacked two others before escaping with cash and gold ornaments, said the DGP.

The accused then crossed the high tension electricity wires through the open field to reach the Canal, where they separated in groups of twos and threes to reach the railway station. After distributing the cash and jewelry among themselves, they dispersed.

Further investigations are in progress to arrest the 11 absconders, including one identified person, and solve other robberies in which the gang members were involved.

Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: Discussion On Government's Handling Of COVID-19 In Rajya Sabha

Parliament Monsoon Session Updates: The monsoon session of the Parliament began on September 14.

New Delhi:

On the third day of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Anand Sharma has given a short duration discussion notice in Rajya Sabha over ''the incursion of the Chinese army across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and military standoff between the armies of the two countries on the LAC''.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will give a statement in Rajya Sabha on today over the developments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

A day earlier, he gave the statement in Lok Sabha over the same subject.

The Opposition has been demanding a discussion on the issue. Congress also walked out from Lok Sabha over the matter.

In his statement, Singh said India has conveyed to China that its attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was unacceptable and noted that the Chinese actions reflect a "disregard" of various bilateral agreements between the two countries.

The two countries have been engaged in a standoff since April-May and China has refused to vacate locations in the Finger area and other friction points in the Eastern Ladakh area.

Multiple rounds of talks have also failed to yield any significant result in defusing the tensions and now the Indian side has prepared itself for long-term deployment in the high mountainous region.

Meanwhile, various parties have given Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha on several issues.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MP Nazeer Ahmad Laway on Wednesday gave a Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha over the issue of MPLADS funds and the poor condition of the national highway from Jammu to Srinagar.

Earlier this year, the Union Cabinet had approved the temporary suspension of MPLADS (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) Funds of MPs for 2020-21 and 2021-22. These funds will be used to strengthen the Government's efforts in managing the challenges and adverse impact of COVID19 in the country.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has also given a Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha over the proposed privatisation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Maharashtra and concerns over national security.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha has given zero hour notice in Rajya Sabha over ''COVID-19 and its impacts on the migrant workforce''.

While Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Veer Singh has given zero hour notice in the Rajya Sabha over ''increase in unemployment due to lockdown and COVID-19 pandemic''.

SKODA AUTO introduces plasma-coated cylinder blocks | Automotive World

SKODA AUTO introduces plasma-coated cylinder blocks

New EA211-series 1.0 TSI petrol engines now feature an ultra-thin plasma coating instead of cast-iron cylinder liners

ŠKODA AUTO has put a new processing line for plasma coating into operation.

This technically innovative concept allows conventional cylinder liners to be replaced with a powder coating that measures just 150 μm (0.15 mm). This will now be used when producing the new EVO three-cylinder engines from the EA211 series and will reduce internal friction. As a result, the 1.0 TSI EVO petrol engines will be even more efficient and boast even lower emissions. ŠKODA has invested a total of around 29 million euros in preparing and converting its Mladá Boleslav-based headquarters.

Christian Bleiel, Head of Component Production at ŠKODA AUTO, highlighted, “The technically highly innovative plasma coating makes our EA211 TSI EVO engines even more efficient. It reduces friction losses and thus also fuel consumption. What’s more, this type of coating also allows heat to be more evenly distributed within the cylinders and helps it to dissipate more efficiently, thus optimising the thermal load. We produce the plasma-coated engines at Mladá Boleslav in three shifts and are installing them in the FABIA, SCALA, OCTAVIA, KAMIQ and KAROQ.”

This means that the engines featuring plasma coating are also used in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA e-TEC mild hybrids. The Czech car manufacturer has added an assembly line with two special fixtures for plasma coating at its main plant. Both of these include two torches. ŠKODA AUTO has invested a total of 28.8 million euros in upgrading the plant in this way; overall, the carmaker has spent 69.1 million euros on modernising engine production.

During the production process, the cylinders are first bored on the machining line. A 1,500-watt laser then abrades the cylinder bores to ensure that the plasma layer will optimally adhere to the surface. This involves the laser beam creating ten grooves per millimetre, each measuring an average depth of 40 μm. This production step takes place in a controlled atmosphere filled with nitrogen to keep the laser’s optics free from contamination and to ensure the necessary level of accuracy.

A mixture of hydrogen and argon is used to create plasma gas, requiring 4.5 l of hydrogen per minute during the process. The plasma reaches a temperature of 15,000° Celsius and is then mixed with various types of steel that have been ground into fine powder. This powder is made up of iron, carbon, silicon and manganese as well as other necessary elements. The individual powder grains measure no more than 50 μm. When sprayed onto the cylinder walls, the molten powder forms a layer measuring approximately 250 μm. During final processing, this layer is honed out, so that it measures just 150 μm. To put all of this in perspective: the wall of a conventional cylinder liner is 4 mm thick.

Each cylinder is automatically measured at several stages throughout the process to assess its quality. Optical measuring instruments first record the surface abraded by the laser, before a second measurement is taken once the plasma has been applied. Finally, the structure of the plasma layer is tested using turbulent flow.

NBA play-offs: Denver Nuggets beat Los Angeles Clippers to reach Western Conference final

Jamal Murray
Jamal Murray scored 40 points and also had five assists

The Denver Nuggets became the first NBA side to recover from 3-1 down twice in the same play-offs by beating the Los Angeles Clippers in game seven to reach the Western Conference finals.

Jamal Murray scored 40 points as the Nuggets won 104-89 on Tuesday to complete another stunning turnaround.

"We just believe in each other," said 23-year-old Canadian Murray.

The Miami Heat edged the Boston Celtics 117-114 in game one of the Eastern Conference finals.

Jimmy Butler scored the winning basket with 12 seconds remaining but Bam Adebayo's block from Jayson Tatum's attempt to tie the score with 3.7 seconds left proved crucial.

"He made a great play," Tatum said of Adebayo's block. "That's all it is. He made a good play, can't do anything about it."

Butler added: "That sealed the game for us. [Adebayo is] a huge part to why we're winning. I've been saying it all year long and I'll repeat it again."

The Nuggets needed seven games to beat the Utah Jazz after trailing their series 3-1 in the last round and have repeated their success against the Clippers.

Speaking at Disney World in Orlando - where games are taking place in the coronavirus quarantine bubble - Nikola Jokic, who scored 34 points in game six to help force the decider, said the Nuggets are "a special group".

The Clippers have never advanced to the conference final in their 50-year history.

Google Doodle Asks People To Wear Mask And Save Lives Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Google doodle shows all letters wearing face masks

To spread the awareness about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Google, through its animated doodle, today reminded people to wear a mask.

The doodle shows all the letters wearing face masks of different colours and patterns. It also links to a series of steps that are aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
  • Calling in advance allows your healthcare provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.

The link also gives information on how masks can help prevent the spread of the virus from the person wearing one to others. Masks alone do not protect against COVID-19, and should be combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Follow the advice provided by your local health authority.

Globally, as of Tuesday evening, there have been 29,155,581 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 926,544 deaths, WHO reported.

British Gymnastics: Amy Tinkler accuses governing body of 'prolonging her suffering'

Amy Tinkler at the Rio Olympics
Amy Tinkler was Great Britain's youngest medallist at Rio 2016

Olympic medallist Amy Tinkler says British Gymnastics are "prolonging my suffering", accusing the governing body of failing to give an explanation as to why her formal complaint was dismissed last month.

Tinkler, 20, submitted a complaint over allegations of mistreatment within the sport in December 2019.

Part of her complaint related to her "experiences" with national coach Amanda Reddin, who has temporarily stepped aside while an investigation into claims about her conduct takes place. She has denied any wrongdoing.

Tinkler says she has emailed British Gymnastics three times "asking for an explanation or summary outcome" without reply and discovered "via a third party" on 10 August her complaint had been closed.

British Gymnastics has apologised and says it has offered to meet Tinkler.

In an open letter to chief executive Jane Allen,external-link Tinkler wrote: "Do you think this is acceptable? Why is it taking so long to share information with me?

"I don't think it's acceptable. I feel I've given British Gymnastics plenty of time to do the right thing. You, as CEO, must recognise that.

"I was promised a summary outcome. Now you say this isn't possible due to 'employee privacy rights'. You have shared details of the outcome (and the respondent's version of events) when concluding other cases.

"Why are you treating me differently? Are you aware your actions are prolonging my suffering?"

Tinkler called for Allen to be "honest, to be open, and to lead as a CEO should," adding, "Please help all of us Gymnasts and stop hanging us out to dry. "

In a statement, British Gymnastics said: "We apologise to Amy for any issues with our communications around her complaint.

"She deserves answers and we have offered to meet her either in person or virtually so we can talk her through the answers to her questions."

Tinkler was Great Britain's youngest medallist at Rio 2016, when she won bronze aged 16, and also won one world medal, three European medals and 10 British titles during her career.

In July, British Gymnastics announced an independent review would take place and Allen has said the organisation had "fallen short" in protecting its members.

Raising the issue through a Zero Hour mention, Javed Ali Khan of the Samajwadi Party said the government has fixed a minimum support price of Rs 1925 per quintal for wheat but farmers are being paid only Rs 1905.

Narrating his own experience of selling wheat at a government-mandated procurement centre, he claimed that he was asked to pay Rs 20 per quintal in cash as cleaning and unloading charges.

"When I demanded so see the order to this effect, the official at the procurement mandi showed me an Uttar Pradesh government order mandating Rs 20 per quintal as a charge for unloading and cleaning," he said.

The order stated that this charge would be reimbursed to farmers once cleared by the Centre and approved by the chief minister, he said, adding farmers have not received any reimbursement in the last three years.

"They don't take cheque or do an (RTGS) account transfer. They take cash and do not give a receipt," he alleged.

He said 36 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured in Uttar Pradesh this year and Rs 72 crore has been collected from farmers as this charge.

At the national level, Rs 780 crore may have been collected as part of these charges from farmers on 90 lakh tonnes of wheat procured, he said asking under what account can cash be taken and no receipt given.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked the government to take note of the issue.

Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad raised the issue of abolition of self-help groups for engineers in Jammu and Kashmir which has rendered 15,000 people unemployed.

He said economic activity has come to a standstill and unemployment has risen since the time Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to a UT 13 months ago.

In 2003, the Congress-PDP government had constituted self-help groups for unemployed engineers so they could take up contracts.

Initially, such groups could take contracts up to Rs 5 lakh and as they gained experience they could take up to Rs 1 crore of contracts.

This helped give employment to 15,000 engineers, he said, adding four days back the UT administration has abolished these self-help groups, rendering them jobless.

P Bhattacharya of the Congress sought that traditional system of medicines such as homeopathy should be encouraged alongside allopathy in the treatment of coronavirus.

Vandana Chavan (NCP) raised the issue of students of vulnerable sections of society being unable to take benefit of online education as 27 per cent of students neither had smartphones nor TVs, nor laptops.

She demanded that the government upgrade digital infrastructure and make available basic digital devices to such students.

Digvijaya Singh of the Congress raised the issue of a spurt in the price of oxygen cylinders across states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.

The price of oxygen refill has risen from Rs 10 per cubic meter to Rs 50, he said, adding the government should strictly enforce the Rs 17 ceiling fixed for the same.

Bhagwat Karad of the BJP too joined the issue, saying there was black marketing of oxygen.

Swapan Dasgupta (Nominated) sought central forces for the security of Vishwa Bharti University as the local administration was "unresponsive" to the demand of the institution.

The university, he said, has been closed since August 17 after vandalism on the campus.

Verdict

Consider the Hyve Pryme if looks are not important and you don’t play heavy games. It’s ideal for multimedia consumption and if you like downloading content on the phone. It has a decent camera and battery life. It's not the absolute best, but worth considering when the Lenovo Z2 Plus and LeEco Le Max 2 aren't available.

Hyve Pryme detailed review

When I received the Hyve Pryme for review I thought it was just another Android phone competing in a saturated price segment. While I was right about the price segment, I underestimated the capabilities of the phone. After putting the phone through our tests, I can confidently say, don’t judge a book by its cover.

Design and Build

The Hyve Pryme is quite simple looking. It has a 5.7-inch display, with a relatively prominent forehead and jaw.  The company’s official claims (on its website) 2.5D Arc Glass Curved Display on the display, but you'll be hard pressed to find this curve. The glass covering the display runs till the edge, but the bezels are prominent, on either side. Above the display we have the front facing camera, earpiece and standard sensors along with a front-facing flash. Interestingly, the chin is empty, with no capacitive buttons, which puts the design into question. Hyve could have saved space instead.

On the left we have the SIM card and expandable storage tray (hybrid Dual-SIM slot), and the power button and volume rocker are on the right. The bottom of the device has two grilles, but only the one on the right houses the speaker. The headphones jack along with the ever popular IR blaster are on the right. The rear houses the 13MP camera, alongwith the dual-tone LED flash, below this rests the fingerprint sensor.

The Hyve Pryme is pretty big with a 5.7-inch display and if you like big phones, you'll feel right at home. There are no complains here. But if you are used to a 4.7-inch, 5-inch or a 5.2-inch phones, this may have an overwhelming presence at first.

Overall, the build and design of the phone is plain, generic and uninspiringn, and that isn’t a bad thing. Like I said, don’t judge a book by its cover. Its simple and some may appreciate that.

Display and UI

The Hyve Pryme's display has decent viewing angles, but visibility direct sunlight is sub-par, a problem we've seen on many other smartphones. It’s a 1080p display and if you plan on using it to watch movies and play games you will be satisfied with the colour reproduction. It doesn’t have vibrant colours like the OnePlus 3 or the warmer tones found on Samsung’s Super AMOLED panels. It has quite the neutral colour tone and I like it. Spiderman’s costumes look naturally red and blue, without any artificial effects in the Homecoming trailer and I liked it. The display performs reasonably in most cases.

The protecting skin (screen guard if you will) is prone to scratches quite easily, though, and that is a big disappointment. You can make out the scratches when you are watching a scene set in dark environments (like night or low light situations) and the scratches are quite prominently visible.

If there is one qualm I have with the display, it is the slight lag between you touching an action on screen and the smartphone responding. This will be noticeable when you type fast on the device. The touch latency is higher than ideal. Just a slight delay between you pressing a button and the corresponding action on screen. To be clear, this'll only be evident to typing ninjas. In our tests, we (Prasid to be precise) found this when unlocking the phone by typing the pin. The code took a fraction of a second more to register than what he is used to experiencing on a smartphone around 20k.

Moving to the UI, the company has chosen a near-stock Android experience, and that's a very good choice. There are no preloaded apps and the only real change you see is in the Settings menu. You'll find Turbo Download and flip cover options. Flip cover lets you lock the device when the flip cover is on and Turbo Download works using cellular and Wi-Fi to download large files faster. This works with files larger than 20MB.

The ability to use different networks and combine them to increase download speeds isn’t new, but not many smartphones have it. It's an interesting feature.

Overall the display is acceptable and the UI plays it safe with stock Android.

Performance

Moving on to the real world performance, this one of the few phones in India powered by the MediaTek Helio X20 SoC. For the uninitiated, this is a deca-core processor, i.e, 10-cores. The smartphone ran all the apps we threw at it and the load times were quick. These are non-gaming apps we use everyday like Facebook, WhatsApp, Gmail, SMS, Call Log, Contacts, Instagram and more. Multitasking is smooth and with more than 12 apps open, there was no problem with everyday tasks on the device.

The device comes with a fingerprint sensor, positioned below the rear camera. It is perfectly positioned to unlock the device while removing it from your pocket and it functions quite accurately too. Just don’t expect Nexus/Pixel Imprint level speed from the Hyve Pryme.

If you are a basic user, then there is nothing wrong with the Hyve Pryme for you. In fact, even if you play games that aren’t resource intensive, then this can be the phone for you. However, if you enjoy games like Injustice and Asphalt 8, then you are in for a bit of trouble.

Gaming

We played some graphically intensive games on the device and weren’t happy with the results. Games like Asphalt 8 showed noticeable frame skips and inconsistent frame rates. This doesn’t mean that the games are unplayable, but the experience isn’t what we have seen on smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 652 or the Snapdragon 820. If you enjoy playing graphically heavy games, then this one isn’t for you.

Camera

If there is one thing that I didn’t like about the camera on the Hyve Pryme, it’s the camera app. It uses a stock Android camera app from over two years ago and you will do better to replace it with one of the third party apps available on the Play Store.

View post on imgur.com

Coming to the quality of images, they are pretty good if you are looking simply share on social media websites or add filters to edit them. Images have quite good colour reproduction, but at the cost of details. Images lack detail, especially when you put them on a computer and see them in their full resolution, but the colour reproduction is good. The low light performance of the Hyve Pryme’s camera is good. The phone is one of the better low light performers in the sub-20k price range. Here again, there's noise and loss of detail, but colours are good.

Moving to the front facing camera, it is accompanied by an LED flash, and the 8MP shooter is good for those daily pouting sessions.

Battery life

On the PC mark battery test the device lasts for 7 hours and 11 minutes and that is quite impressive. For a heavy user, you will reach 20% towards the end of the day. This comprises of some email, 20 min of gaming, some social networking and the standard array of phone calls and some Youtubing. For the average user, the phone should last for a day and have some juice left for the next day, before hitting the wall socket.

One thing I don’t like is that the smartphone takes a over 2 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. That is a bummer. The official website says that the device has USB Type-C for fast charging, but it doesn’t come with a fast charger in the box.

Bottomline

Overall, the Hyve Pryme is a good phone for those looking for a functional device with a large display and simple looks. The gaming performance isn’t great for graphically heavy games. If you want a device for multimedia consumption and to get through a regular day of social networking, messaging and calls, then yes, the Hyve Pryme gets the job done. It is however overshadowed by devices such as the Lenovo Z2 Plus, which offers more built-in storage along with the tried and tested Snapdragon 820, or the LeEco Le Max 2, both of which are much faster.

Serum Institute Of India Gets DCGI Nod To Resume Clinical Trial Of Oxford COVID-19 Vaccine

Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial. The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be "scrupulously" followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:40 AM IST

New Delhi, Sep 15: Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial. The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be “scrupulously” followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).

SII has also been asked to submit to the DCGI’s office details of medication used in accordance with the protocol for management of adverse events. The DCGI had on September 11 directed Serum Institute of India to suspend any new recruitment in the phase two and three clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate till further orders in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the clinical trials in other countries because of ”an unexplained illness” in a participant in the study.

On Saturday, British-Swedish biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine have resumed in the UK after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority’s (MHRA) confirmed that the trials were safe. SII, which has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing the vaccine candidate for COVID-19, on Tuesday submitted the recommendations of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), UK and DSMB, India, and requested for permission to restart enrolment in the clinical trial.

According to Tuesday’s order issued by DCGI, the DSMB, UK, recommended that the investigators recommence all immunization in their clinical trials subject to certain conditions. DSMB, India, also has recommended to continue the study and enroll the remaining participants in the clinical trial as per protocol subject to certain conditions.

According to the order, SII has submitted revised participant information sheet, revised informed consent form and additional safety monitoring plan for the evolved participants. The Pune-based firm has also submitted a summary of safety follow up of seven days post first vaccination, stating that no serious adverse events were experienced by any of the subjects till the date of the reporting, and the reported adverse events were stated to be mild, resolved on their own and did not have any sequale.

“In view of the above, I Dr V G Somani, Drugs Controller General of India, Central Licensing Authority, after careful examination of your reply and the recommendations of the DSMB in India and in UK revoke herewith the order dated September 11 issued under Rule 30 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019. “You may recommence the clinical trial as recommended by DSMB, India, as per already approved protocol and the provisions laid down under the New Drugs and Clinical Trial Rules, 2019, subject to the conditions mentioned,” the order said.

UAE Official Says Israel Accord Should Dispel Doubts Over F-35 Sale

The United Arab Emirates wants to modernise its military and a request for U.S. F35 warplanes has been on the table since before a normalisation deal with Israel, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Tuesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:25 PM IST

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates wants to modernise its military and a request for U.S. F-35 warplanes has been on the table since before a normalisation deal with Israel, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Tuesday.

The agreement, known as the Abraham Accord, should dispel “any grain of doubt” on why the Gulf state should get stealth F-35 fighter jets from the United States, Gargash told reporters.

“The UAE seeks like any country that takes its military seriously, to modernize its military, always, so our request for the F35 and other systems pre-dates this agreement,” he said.

The UAE’s existing F-16 jets are now almost two decades old and it is time to renew them, he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his government would oppose any U.S. F-35 warplane sales to the UAE, despite forging relations with the Gulf power. U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday told Fox News he would have no problem selling the planes to the UAE.

The UAE and Gulf neighbour Bahrain are set to sign normalisation accords with Israel at a White House ceremony on Tuesday.

Gargash said the country’s decision to normalise ties broke a “psychological barrier” and is the way forward for the region, giving it more leverage.

He said Israel suspending its planned annexation of Palestinian land would stop the two-state solution being undermined and that the United States’ mediator role was assurance that further annexation would be suspended.

The Emirati minister said it was not the time to revise the Arab Peace Initiative, and that it remains the cornerstone of the UAE’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.

A strategic breakthrough is needed, he said, but “it will not happen overnight”.

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to identify the fan who sent profanely racist messages to a player from a rival team in an effort to ban the person from games and events.

The team responded Tuesday to racist messages sent to Arizona Cardinals safety Bishard "Budda" Baker, which Baker posted to his social media accounts Monday. In what appeared to be private messages on Instagram, a user identified only as "niners8" called Baker a "monkey ass n-----" and a "slave."

"Im all good with opposing fans talking trash," Baker wrote on Twitter with screenshots of the messages. "But This right here man... All you can do is pray for ppl like this."

NBC News was unable to find the Instagram account Tuesday.

Baker played with the Cardinals against the 49ers on Sunday in the NFL's opening week, delivering a notable tackle against 49ers tight end George Kittle. The Cardinals won, 24-20.

The 49ers said the anonymous fan did not represent the team or The Faithful, the moniker given to San Francisco fans. The team said it was working to identify the person who sent the messages to ban the person from events.

"Incidents like this demonstrate how much work remains to be done to address racism and hate in our society," the 49ers' statement said. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to that work."

The NFL has struggled to meaningfully address racism and racial injustice, despite public gestures to support social causes. When its season began Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri, the field at Arrowhead Stadium read "End Racism."

Kansas City Chiefs fans stood together as, through a video feed, Alicia Keys sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a poem set to music that has often been referred to as the "Black national anthem." The opposing team, the Houston Texans, remained in the locker room.

After the Texans returned to the field, Chiefs fans booed players as both teams locked arms during a moment of silence "dedicated to the ongoing fight for equality." The gesture was seen as a show of unity.

The NFL said "Lift Every Voice and Sing" would play at all Week 1 games in a nod to racial injustice, but critics have called it a meaningless gesture.

Several Miami Dolphins players, including veteran defensive back Bobby McCain and linebacker Elandon Roberts, released a video Thursday that said they would stay inside for the "publicity parade," calling the decision to play the song a "way to save face."

"If you speak up for change, I'll shut up and play," McCain said in the video, which was obtained by ESPN.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores appeared at the end of the video in a T-shirt that read "Vote" across his chest.

"Before the media starts wondering and guessing, they just answered all your questions," Flores said. "We'll just stay inside."

Other teams also chose to stay inside at subsequent games during the rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the national anthem or both, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers.

  • She later said she was happy with the outcome and that the fight was not over

The leader of a vegan 'army' who break into farms to perform 'animal rescues' revealed her passion has resulted in receiving death threats.

Leah Ava Whetton appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering a piggery and an egg production factory.

The 30-year-old has previously been charged 22 times for similar offences.

The most recent charges relate to Whetton breaking into Cameron Pastoral piggery at Pittsworth in 2018, and Canningvale poultry farm Williams Eggs in 2019.

Defence barrister Nathan Edridge told the court both Whetton and her mother had been subjected to abuse since the nature of her offending became public.

'My client... had death threats made to her and her mother and things like personal details being released,' he said before asking the court to consider the 'extra punishment' she has already received in public.

'One of these matters included a phone call where my client was threatened to have her fingers cut off and her jaw broken,' he said.

Prior to her sentencing, Whetton revealed she wasn't sure if she would receive a custodial sentence.

'The sentencing is still very important because I have been charged 22 times,' she said.

'My barrister and my lawyer will have to do an amazing job not to get me a conviction today.'

The court heard she disregarded clearly signed biosecurity procedures and handled piglets and laying hens.

The court was told Whetton had a history of similar offences and her offences were 'of a continual nature'.

But defence solicitor Lumme Rynderman told the court: 'Other than this offending which is grounded in her conscience, she has no criminal history.'

Whetton was fined $1,000 and managed to escape without conviction.

After the court appearance, she immediately took to Instagram to tell her 36,000 followers that she was 'happy' with the outcome.

'No conviction, no community order, no probation, I just got a fine... so I'm happy with that. Until next time, hey.'

'This isn't over until we are all free,' she wrote alongside the short video.

The group is known for staging sit ins and protests at farms over animal rights.

'What is done in the dark will be brought to the light,' Whetton said.

'We aren’t going anywhere. There is an army of us and it’s only growing. We won’t stop, until all are free.'

On Wednesday, a group of Whetton's supporters accompanied her to court with posters and signs to protest.

Several of the posters featured graphic images of slaughtered and dying animals along with several slogans including 'right to rescue', 'free range is a lie' and 'I wanted to live'.
