JPMorgan sends employees home after worker gets Covid-19

The case shows the challenges banks face as they try to bring more staff back to the office after months of remote work

JPMorgan Chase & Co. sent some of its Manhattan workers home this week after an employee in equities trading tested positive for Covid-19, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

News of the infection, on the fifth floor of the company’s 383 Madison Ave. building, was communicated to employees on Sept. 13, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing information that isn’t public. That was less than a week after more workers began returning to offices following the Labor Day holiday, and just days after the biggest U.S. bank told senior traders they’d be required to return by Sept. 21.

The case shows the challenges banks face as they try to bring more staff back to the office after months of remote work. JPMorgan has been among the boldest banks in calling workers back, and Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon spoke earlier Tuesday about his concerns that extended work-from-home could have its own consequences.

A JPMorgan spokesman said he couldn’t comment on any one case but that the bank has been “managing individual cases across the firm over the course of the last few months and following appropriate protocols when they occur."

The infection is something of a deja vu for the bank. In April, there was an outbreak on the same floor inside JPMorgan’s temporary headquarters on Madison Avenue, with at least 16 people testing positive on a single trading floor.

Trump Tweet

While JPMorgan has been opening its offices to more staff over the past few months, few were initially required to return. The decision to require senior traders to return spurred a tweet last week from President Donald Trump, who’s been pushing for businesses and schools across the U.S. to reopen. Trump applauded the bank’s move, though he inaccurately said it applied to all employees. The push to get workers back is fueling anxiety among workers who worry the bank is putting profits over their safety.

Dimon, who’s been going into the bank’s offices since June, said Tuesday that he sees economic and social damage from a longer stretch of working from home. Governments should be focused on cautiously reopening cities, learning from earlier mistakes made in hasty attempts, he said.

“Going back to work is a good thing," Dimon said during a virtual panel discussion at the Singapore Summit. It makes sense to “carefully open up and see if we can get the economy growing for the sake of everybody."

Dimon recently told Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analysts that productivity has slipped as employees work from home, with output particularly affected on Mondays and Fridays. JPMorgan spokesman Michael Fusco added that younger workers “could be disadvantaged by missed learning opportunities" by not being in offices.

Attack on Suresh Raina's relatives: murder case solved; says Punjab CM

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday announced that the case of attack and murder involving cricketer Suresh Raina’s kin has been solved with the arrest of three members of an inter-state gang of robber-criminals.

Eleven other accused are yet to be arrested, DGP Dinkar Gupta said, giving details of the arrests in the case which took place on the night of 19th August in Village Tharyal of PS Shahpurkandi, District Pathankot.

Raina’s uncle Ashok Kumar, a contractor, had died on the spot, while his son Kaushal Kumar succumbed to injuries on 31st August and wife Asha Rani is in hospital in critical condition. Two others injured in the attack had been discharged from the hospital.

Soon after the incident, the Chief Minister had ordered the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under IGP Border Range Amritsar, with SSP Pathankot, SP Investigation and DSP Dhar Kalan as its members, to investigate the case thoroughly and expeditiously

The SIT, during the investigation, gathered all the circumstantial and physical evidence related to the case (FIR No. 153 dt. 20.08.2020 U/S 460/459/ 458 IPC PS Shapur Kandi, with Section 302, 307, 148, 149 IPC added by the SIT during the investigation). More than 100 suspected persons were joined in the investigation, according to the DGP.

On September 15, the SIT received information that three suspects, who were seen at the Defence Road on the morning after the incident, were staying in Jhuggis near the Pathankot Railway Station. A raid was conducted and all three were nabbed.

According to the DGP, a gold ring bearing AK, one Ladies Ring, one Ladies Gold chain and Rs. 1530/- was recovered, along with two wooden sticks, were recovered from the arrested accused, identified as Sawan @ Matching, Muhobbat and Shahrukh Khan, currently residents of Chirawa and Pilani jhuggis, District Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

Initial investigation has revealed that they were operating as a gang along with others and had committed several such crimes earlier in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and various parts of Punjab, moving to the crime spots in groups of 2-3 following the natural landmarks like Canals, railway lines, high voltage electricity wires, etc.

Sawan, originally a native of Uttar Pradesh, has told the SIT that on 12th August, they had moved as a group from Chirawa and Pilani in an auto (PB 02 G 9025), owned by one Nausau, also living in the Chirawa jhuggis. Nausau accompanied the trio, along with Rashid, Rehan, Jabrana, Waphila, Tawajjal Bibi and an unknown person.

They reached Jagraon, Ludhiana, where they were joined by three others Reenda, Golu and Sajan. They purchased an Aari, 02 pliers and one screwdriver from a hardware shop and a few Kacha Banyan (undergarments) from a garment shop in Ludhiana. They left for Pathankot after committing a robbery in Jagraon on the night of 14th August.

In Pathankot, one Sanju, who knew the area well, also joined them, said the DGP, adding that the gang conducted a recce of the area, according to Pathankot SSP Gulneet Khurana.

On the night of 19th August, at around 7-8 pm, they moved in groups of 2-3 persons, as per their modus operandi, and reached a designated spot in the open field where Rashid, Nausau and Sanju @ Chajju went to bring wooden sticks which they cut from Safeda (Eucalyptus) tree.

During recce, they had already identified a shuttering shop, where the bamboo ladders were tied up using chains. The first two houses where they put the ladders turned out to be a godown and an empty home, while the third was of Ashok Kumar. Five of the accused entered the house using the ladder from the side of the roof, where they saw three people lying on the mats. The suspects hit them on the head before moving into the house, where they attacked two others before escaping with cash and gold ornaments, said the DGP.

The accused then crossed the high tension electricity wires through the open field to reach the Canal, where they separated in groups of twos and threes to reach the railway station. After distributing the cash and jewelry among themselves, they dispersed.

Further investigations are in progress to arrest the 11 absconders, including one identified person, and solve other robberies in which the gang members were involved.

Covid-hit Indian economy to witness gradual recovery, says RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said the country’s economic recovery will be gradual as the impact of Covid-19 has still not subsided.

While addressing the FICCI National Executive Committee Meeting, Das said the economic recovery has not yet been fully entrenched and went on to add that the GDP data in the first quarter of FY21 is a reflection of how the pandemic disrupted the country’s economy.

"Recovery is not yet fully entranched. In some sectors, the optic noticed in June and July appear to have levelled off. By all indications, the recovery is likely to be gradual as efforts towards reopening of the economy are confronted with rising infections," he said.

The RBI governor's comments come at a time when India's economy is going through a period of severe economic crisis. However, Das said that some high frequency indicators have improved and indicate "some stabilisation" of economic activity in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

"Contractions in many other sectors simultaneously easing," he said.

Shaktikanta Das went on to say that the central bank has ensured adequate liquidity infusion to facilitate borrowing by the government at low rate. Das also said that the central bank is "battle-ready" to take whatever steps needed to further stabilise the ailing economy.

"RBI stands battle ready to take whatever steps need to be taken for the economy," he said.
