Musicians Kaithapram Damodaran and M Jayachandran have revealed that they will be collaborating once again for Shane Nigam-starrer Qurbaani. The two announced it during a social media interaction session.
Calling Jayachandran one among his dearest from the new generation, Kaithapram reminisced about the early days when the two first met.

“We have known each other for over a decade. I first met him while working on Njan Gandharvan,” said Kaithapram. Jayachandran, while recalling the early days, said he was fortunate enough to meet legends like Kaithapram, Johnson master, Padmarajan, and Bharathan.

“I was doing some track singing for Johnson master at the time. I got to witness and learn from him while he sang ‘Devanganangal’ (from Njan Gandharvan) for Bharathan.” Qurbaani will be Shane’s follow-up to Veyil and Ullasam. In addition to these three films, the actor has also signed Sajid Yahiya’s next film Qalb.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is a jack of all trades, but master of none. As far as budget smartphones are concerned, this is one of the most dependable phones out there.

Xiaomi Mi A1 detailed review

A tie up with Google has usually been seen as a stepping stone for budding smartphone makers. But, Chinese Xiaomi is neither a budding smartphone maker, nor a stranger to Google tie-ups. I’ve personally asked the company, on multiple occasions, whether the Mi Box would ever make it to India, but that device has little relevance to India at the moment. What is relevant to the country though is Google’s Android One program. And joining this program puts Xiaomi in the unique position of leading the pack.

The Android One program seemed to have fizzled out since its announcement a couple of years ago. However, many would argue that Google chose the wrong partners to kick off the project. If that was indeed the case, the Xiaomi’s entry into the fray, with the Mi A1, should probably be enough to revive Android One. The company brings with it a viral quality, enthusiast support, growing reach and brand trust that Lava, Micromax and Karbonn probably never had.

On the other hand, the Mi A1 is a big deal for Xiaomi as well. It is the first time the company ditches its trusty MiUI platform, and also its first dual-camera phone in India. The Mi branding tells you that Xiaomi considers this amongst its premium devices, and the company says Android Oreo will be rolled out to this phone before 2017 is through. It is also the most powerful Android One phone ever, which is easy enough to do, but the Mi A1 review, presents us with a phone that is indeed tough to argue against. Xiaomi will sell this phone on its retail channels and Mi Homes, along with e-commerce websites.

Note: At the time of writing this review, we’ve had this device for about a week before launch, but the pricing details haven’t been revealed yet. Considering Xiaomi’s history, the inclusion of the Android One program, and the dual-camera, we’re operating under the assumption that the phone will be priced at Rs. 13,999. The Mi A1 is priced at Rs 14,999 and is available on Flipkart.

Stock Android on a Mi phone

While Xiaomi doesn’t actively promote MiUI anymore, the interface is a major part of the company’s ecosystem. Xiaomi’s fans often swear by it, despite the fact that Xiaomi chooses MiUI updates over Android updates, and that the UI is certainly heavier than a vanilla Android experience.

On the Mi A1, Xiaomi has kept only three apps from MiUI: the uber useful Mi remote app, the Mi Store and the Feedback app. Otherwise, with Android 7.1.2 out-of-the-box, this is Xiaomi’s most advanced (in terms of Android version) phone yet. The only other change is in the camera app and algorithm, which was necessary since Android doesn’t natively support dual-cameras just yet. Xiaomi says this won’t hamper the Oreo timeline mentioned above.

Running on stock Android eliminates some of the overheads on the processor and the phone presents a smooth and lag free experience on general day-to-day things. Apps load as expected and without many hiccups. However, in the past week or so, I have often felt that MiUI on a Redmi Note 4 felt smoother and better tuned. The Mi A1 is not all that different from the Note 4 in terms of specifications, so we will try to gain deeper insights into this via a comparison later.

As a standalone device though, the Mi A1 is as smooth as you expect a stock Android device to be and even faster than some. It’s not absolutely lag free, but then no budget device is that way either. The Mi A1 gets by with minimum lags and its UI performance is certainly above average.

Camera

Stock Android is not the only USP for this device. It’s also the only Android One phone to sport a dual-camera. There are two 12MP sensors on the back of this device, and Xiaomi refused to reveal the sensor details since it will be sourcing them from multiple sources. That means final camera quality on the device you buy may differ from our review sample.

Nevertheless, two cameras follow the iPhone’s telephoto and wide angle formula, offering 2x zoom and bokeh mode. There’s a “Stereo Mode” within the camera app for shooting bokeh shots, while you’ll find the family 1x/2x button for zooming seamlessly. The camera app is custom designed by Xiaomi and works seamlessly enough.

That said, we did slight details in auto-focus, which increases with deteriorating light conditions. As a result, low light photos can sometimes be blurry and they take considerable time to process. In fact, even with dual-cameras, the Mi A1 doesn’t really set a benchmark as far as camera prowess is concerned. It’s a good camera to work with, and will take good enough shots for sharing on social media, but don’t go expecting much more.

Stereo Mode

Xiaomi’s stereo mode is its take on Apple’s “portrait mode”, and its task is to blue the background. While this is done via a combination of hardware and software, the final effects are commendable most of the times. The problem is that the stereo mode only works when there’s ample light, meaning most night time shots will have to be taken using the auto mode only. While detail level and colours are quite good in this mode, this limits its usability severely.

Bokeh shot using the Stereo Mode on the Mi A1

Zoom

Xiaomi is promising you 2x optical zoom with this device, and the 1x/2x button is quite useful. It switches from the wide angle to the telephoto lens (56mm) seamlessly and the results are quite good. You see some noise when shooting indoors, but not enough to hamper image quality or lead to major loss of details. Again, social media sharing shouldn’t be an issue here.

Regular Shooting

When shooting in auto mode, the Mi A1 produces really sharp and well detailed photos in daylight conditions. However, it suffers from considerable noise and loss of detail in low light. It is also best used when shooting close up shots, with noticeable aberrations in longer range photos. Overall, the camera is decent, but nothing that would offset the status quo in the budget range.

Performance

With the Snapdragon 625 inside, this is the fastest Android One phone we’ve seen to date. As explained in the UI section above, the Mi A1 is lag free and sufficiently fast. It isn’t a powerhouse by any length of imagination, but it’s dependable to say the least. Gaming performance is good, with minor lags from time to time. The only real issue is that the phone heats up just enough for you to be uncomfortable while gaming for long periods. It would seem that Xiaomi’s thermal control algorithms on MiUI are better than Android’s native versions.

Either way, if you’re not a heavy gamer, this phone should cause you no troubles. Temperatures reached a maximum of 42 degrees celsius on the body, which is acceptable and not abnormal. It’s just not ideal.

Much like the camera, the Xiaomi Mi A1 produces functional performance levels and is dependable through and through. It just won’t qualify as “snappy”, which many budget buyers will perhaps not mind. Using shortcuts hotkeys is fast enough, while app load times and app performance are easily acceptable.

Display

A major difference between this phone and Xiaomi’s other phones is in the display quality. Colour tones are balanced, but lack the punch that we’ve come to expect from the company’s devices. It’s not a colourful display and feels somewhat sticky to touch. That’s not a deal breaker at all, but we’ve come to expect a little more from Xiaomi’s displays. Overall, you’re getting a balanced display that doesn’t miss touches, responds to commands fast and is just bright enough to be used under direct sunlight.

Battery

Xiaomi wants this device to be as cheap as it can be, so it’s not pushing the boundaries with battery capacity here. Alternatively, MiUI’s usual overheads aren’t present here, so the company probably thought that a 3050 mAh battery should be enough. In practical terms, that translates to just over 11 hours run times on PC Mark’s Work 2.0 battery test. That, ranks the Mi A1 amongst the better battery performers amongst budget devices.

In regular usage, like many other aspects of this phone, it’s a dependable performer with respect to battery life. You’ll need to charge it every night, but it should get by without much more, unless you’re playing games for hours and hours every day.

Build and Design

Last but not the least, we get to the most Xiaomi-like elements of this phone. From the back, the Mi A1 looks iPhone-like. The antenna lines run along the top and bottom edges, while the device is rounded at the corners. There are also thick plastic strips on all four sides of the display, with noticeable but not overtly large bezels below them.

The strip below the display holds backlit capacitive buttons, while the overall form factor and weight remain quite ergonomic. It’s not perfectly suited to single handed usage, but it won’t particularly fail you when you absolutely need to use it with one hand. The power button respects comfortably below your thumb (if you’re right handed), while the volume rocker can be reached easily. There’s a fingerprint sensor on the back and the phone’s entire construction is metallic.

As far as Android One phones are concerned, this is the most premium we’ve got so far. As far as budget phones are concerned, this is what we expect from budget devices today. Once again, the Mi A1 gives you just what you need, without pushing the boundaries in any way, something we’ve come to expect from Xiaomi over time. It’s not a rehashed design, but it’s not an entirely new one either.

Bottomline

Xiaomi’s Mi A1 is an Android One phone first and Xiaomi phone later. The promise of updated Android is something Xiaomi phones never give you, while the dual-camera keeps it in with the times. It’s not an underpowered and compromised device that the Android One program has produced so far. Instead, it’s a very dependable smartphone that you should certainly consider. It’s what Android One phones should have been from the very beginning.

How it compares

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is a jack of all trade, but master of none. It has a decent camera, but it is easily outperformed by the Moto G5 Plus or Samsung Galaxy J7 Max. It is a fluid performer and offers dependable battery life, but can be outperformed by the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. The emphasis here seems to be on keeping prices as low as possible, and if Xiaomi can his something below Rs. 13,999, this phone is a no brainer.

You’re not buying the best budget phone today, but you’re buying a phone that can stand the test of time and won’t let you down easily.

Flood: NEMA warns 102 local govts

Published

on

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has sent a strong warning to 102 local government areas in 28 States.

Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) AVM Muhammadu A. Muhammad disclosed this at a flood advocacy to Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar in Dutse.

He said the Local Governments are in the higher risk of being devastated by flood due to their closeness to water ways in the country.

According to him” the annual flood outlook informed that 102 local government areas, in 28 States fall within the highly probable risk area.

“While 275 Local Government Areas in the 36 States of the Federation including the Federal Capital Territory fall within the moderately probable flood risk areas, the remaining 397 Local Government areas fall within the low probable flood risk areas”

Muhammad noted that the predicted floods have started to occur in many parts of the country.

He therefore advised the Local Government to activate all plans and measures against the the prediction.

He, however, stated that the annual occurrence of flood have continued to threaten food production in the country.

Muhammad said although climate change is responsible for the increasing flooding, the Governments and people must involve strategies to minimize losses through adherence to warning alerts, early prediction and proper response.

Government Muhammad Badaru Abubakar said the flood has so far killed about thirty person, destroyed over fifty-one thousands houses and farmlands submerged.

Attack on Suresh Raina's relatives: murder case solved; says Punjab CM

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday announced that the case of attack and murder involving cricketer Suresh Raina’s kin has been solved with the arrest of three members of an inter-state gang of robber-criminals.

Eleven other accused are yet to be arrested, DGP Dinkar Gupta said, giving details of the arrests in the case which took place on the night of 19th August in Village Tharyal of PS Shahpurkandi, District Pathankot.

Raina’s uncle Ashok Kumar, a contractor, had died on the spot, while his son Kaushal Kumar succumbed to injuries on 31st August and wife Asha Rani is in hospital in critical condition. Two others injured in the attack had been discharged from the hospital.

Soon after the incident, the Chief Minister had ordered the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under IGP Border Range Amritsar, with SSP Pathankot, SP Investigation and DSP Dhar Kalan as its members, to investigate the case thoroughly and expeditiously

The SIT, during the investigation, gathered all the circumstantial and physical evidence related to the case (FIR No. 153 dt. 20.08.2020 U/S 460/459/ 458 IPC PS Shapur Kandi, with Section 302, 307, 148, 149 IPC added by the SIT during the investigation). More than 100 suspected persons were joined in the investigation, according to the DGP.

On September 15, the SIT received information that three suspects, who were seen at the Defence Road on the morning after the incident, were staying in Jhuggis near the Pathankot Railway Station. A raid was conducted and all three were nabbed.

According to the DGP, a gold ring bearing AK, one Ladies Ring, one Ladies Gold chain and Rs. 1530/- was recovered, along with two wooden sticks, were recovered from the arrested accused, identified as Sawan @ Matching, Muhobbat and Shahrukh Khan, currently residents of Chirawa and Pilani jhuggis, District Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

Initial investigation has revealed that they were operating as a gang along with others and had committed several such crimes earlier in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and various parts of Punjab, moving to the crime spots in groups of 2-3 following the natural landmarks like Canals, railway lines, high voltage electricity wires, etc.

Sawan, originally a native of Uttar Pradesh, has told the SIT that on 12th August, they had moved as a group from Chirawa and Pilani in an auto (PB 02 G 9025), owned by one Nausau, also living in the Chirawa jhuggis. Nausau accompanied the trio, along with Rashid, Rehan, Jabrana, Waphila, Tawajjal Bibi and an unknown person.

They reached Jagraon, Ludhiana, where they were joined by three others Reenda, Golu and Sajan. They purchased an Aari, 02 pliers and one screwdriver from a hardware shop and a few Kacha Banyan (undergarments) from a garment shop in Ludhiana. They left for Pathankot after committing a robbery in Jagraon on the night of 14th August.

In Pathankot, one Sanju, who knew the area well, also joined them, said the DGP, adding that the gang conducted a recce of the area, according to Pathankot SSP Gulneet Khurana.

On the night of 19th August, at around 7-8 pm, they moved in groups of 2-3 persons, as per their modus operandi, and reached a designated spot in the open field where Rashid, Nausau and Sanju @ Chajju went to bring wooden sticks which they cut from Safeda (Eucalyptus) tree.

During recce, they had already identified a shuttering shop, where the bamboo ladders were tied up using chains. The first two houses where they put the ladders turned out to be a godown and an empty home, while the third was of Ashok Kumar. Five of the accused entered the house using the ladder from the side of the roof, where they saw three people lying on the mats. The suspects hit them on the head before moving into the house, where they attacked two others before escaping with cash and gold ornaments, said the DGP.

The accused then crossed the high tension electricity wires through the open field to reach the Canal, where they separated in groups of twos and threes to reach the railway station. After distributing the cash and jewelry among themselves, they dispersed.

Further investigations are in progress to arrest the 11 absconders, including one identified person, and solve other robberies in which the gang members were involved.

A day earlier, he gave the statement in Lok Sabha over the same subject.

The Opposition has been demanding a discussion on the issue. Congress also walked out from Lok Sabha over the matter.

In his statement, Singh said India has conveyed to China that its attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was unacceptable and noted that the Chinese actions reflect a "disregard" of various bilateral agreements between the two countries.

The two countries have been engaged in a standoff since April-May and China has refused to vacate locations in the Finger area and other friction points in the Eastern Ladakh area.

Multiple rounds of talks have also failed to yield any significant result in defusing the tensions and now the Indian side has prepared itself for long-term deployment in the high mountainous region.

Meanwhile, various parties have given Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha on several issues.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MP Nazeer Ahmad Laway on Wednesday gave a Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha over the issue of MPLADS funds and the poor condition of the national highway from Jammu to Srinagar.

Earlier this year, the Union Cabinet had approved the temporary suspension of MPLADS (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) Funds of MPs for 2020-21 and 2021-22. These funds will be used to strengthen the Government's efforts in managing the challenges and adverse impact of COVID19 in the country.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has also given a Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha over the proposed privatisation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Maharashtra and concerns over national security.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha has given zero hour notice in Rajya Sabha over ''COVID-19 and its impacts on the migrant workforce''.

While Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Veer Singh has given zero hour notice in the Rajya Sabha over ''increase in unemployment due to lockdown and COVID-19 pandemic''.

The monsoon session of the Parliament began on September 14, under the shadow of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

NBA play-offs: Denver Nuggets beat Los Angeles Clippers to reach Western Conference final

Jamal Murray scored 40 points and also had five assists

The Denver Nuggets became the first NBA side to recover from 3-1 down twice in the same play-offs by beating the Los Angeles Clippers in game seven to reach the Western Conference finals.

Jamal Murray scored 40 points as the Nuggets won 104-89 on Tuesday to complete another stunning turnaround.

"We just believe in each other," said 23-year-old Canadian Murray.

The Miami Heat edged the Boston Celtics 117-114 in game one of the Eastern Conference finals.

Jimmy Butler scored the winning basket with 12 seconds remaining but Bam Adebayo's block from Jayson Tatum's attempt to tie the score with 3.7 seconds left proved crucial.

"He made a great play," Tatum said of Adebayo's block. "That's all it is. He made a good play, can't do anything about it."

Butler added: "That sealed the game for us. [Adebayo is] a huge part to why we're winning. I've been saying it all year long and I'll repeat it again."

The Nuggets needed seven games to beat the Utah Jazz after trailing their series 3-1 in the last round and have repeated their success against the Clippers.

Speaking at Disney World in Orlando - where games are taking place in the coronavirus quarantine bubble - Nikola Jokic, who scored 34 points in game six to help force the decider, said the Nuggets are "a special group".

The Clippers have never advanced to the conference final in their 50-year history.

Google Doodle Asks People To Wear Mask And Save Lives Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Google doodle shows all letters wearing face masks

To spread the awareness about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Google, through its animated doodle, today reminded people to wear a mask.

The doodle shows all the letters wearing face masks of different colours and patterns. It also links to a series of steps that are aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
  • Calling in advance allows your healthcare provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.

The link also gives information on how masks can help prevent the spread of the virus from the person wearing one to others. Masks alone do not protect against COVID-19, and should be combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Follow the advice provided by your local health authority.

Globally, as of Tuesday evening, there have been 29,155,581 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 926,544 deaths, WHO reported.

UP Government Collecting Charges For Unloading, Cleaning Wheat: Samajwadi Party MP

UP Government Collecting Charges For Unloading, Cleaning Wheat: Samajwadi Party MP

The MP said UP fixed minimum support price of Rs 1,925 per quintal, but farmers paid only Rs 1,905.

New Delhi:

The Uttar Pradesh government is charging Rs 20 per quintal in cash in the name of unloading and cleaning charges for wheat procured from farmers and has not reimbursed them in the last three years, an MP in Rajya Sabha alleged.

Raising the issue through a Zero Hour mention, Javed Ali Khan of the Samajwadi Party said the government has fixed a minimum support price of Rs 1925 per quintal for wheat but farmers are being paid only Rs 1905.

Narrating his own experience of selling wheat at a government-mandated procurement centre, he claimed that he was asked to pay Rs 20 per quintal in cash as cleaning and unloading charges.

"When I demanded so see the order to this effect, the official at the procurement mandi showed me an Uttar Pradesh government order mandating Rs 20 per quintal as a charge for unloading and cleaning," he said.

The order stated that this charge would be reimbursed to farmers once cleared by the Centre and approved by the chief minister, he said, adding farmers have not received any reimbursement in the last three years.

"They don't take cheque or do an (RTGS) account transfer. They take cash and do not give a receipt," he alleged.

He said 36 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured in Uttar Pradesh this year and Rs 72 crore has been collected from farmers as this charge.

At the national level, Rs 780 crore may have been collected as part of these charges from farmers on 90 lakh tonnes of wheat procured, he said asking under what account can cash be taken and no receipt given.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked the government to take note of the issue.

Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad raised the issue of abolition of self-help groups for engineers in Jammu and Kashmir which has rendered 15,000 people unemployed.

He said economic activity has come to a standstill and unemployment has risen since the time Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to a UT 13 months ago.

In 2003, the Congress-PDP government had constituted self-help groups for unemployed engineers so they could take up contracts.

Initially, such groups could take contracts up to Rs 5 lakh and as they gained experience they could take up to Rs 1 crore of contracts.

This helped give employment to 15,000 engineers, he said, adding four days back the UT administration has abolished these self-help groups, rendering them jobless.

P Bhattacharya of the Congress sought that traditional system of medicines such as homeopathy should be encouraged alongside allopathy in the treatment of coronavirus.

Vandana Chavan (NCP) raised the issue of students of vulnerable sections of society being unable to take benefit of online education as 27 per cent of students neither had smartphones nor TVs, nor laptops.

She demanded that the government upgrade digital infrastructure and make available basic digital devices to such students.

Digvijaya Singh of the Congress raised the issue of a spurt in the price of oxygen cylinders across states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.

The price of oxygen refill has risen from Rs 10 per cubic meter to Rs 50, he said, adding the government should strictly enforce the Rs 17 ceiling fixed for the same.

Bhagwat Karad of the BJP too joined the issue, saying there was black marketing of oxygen.

Swapan Dasgupta (Nominated) sought central forces for the security of Vishwa Bharti University as the local administration was "unresponsive" to the demand of the institution.

The university, he said, has been closed since August 17 after vandalism on the campus.

Verdict

Consider the Hyve Pryme if looks are not important and you don’t play heavy games. It’s ideal for multimedia consumption and if you like downloading content on the phone. It has a decent camera and battery life. It's not the absolute best, but worth considering when the Lenovo Z2 Plus and LeEco Le Max 2 aren't available.

Hyve Pryme detailed review

When I received the Hyve Pryme for review I thought it was just another Android phone competing in a saturated price segment. While I was right about the price segment, I underestimated the capabilities of the phone. After putting the phone through our tests, I can confidently say, don’t judge a book by its cover.

Design and Build

The Hyve Pryme is quite simple looking. It has a 5.7-inch display, with a relatively prominent forehead and jaw.  The company’s official claims (on its website) 2.5D Arc Glass Curved Display on the display, but you'll be hard pressed to find this curve. The glass covering the display runs till the edge, but the bezels are prominent, on either side. Above the display we have the front facing camera, earpiece and standard sensors along with a front-facing flash. Interestingly, the chin is empty, with no capacitive buttons, which puts the design into question. Hyve could have saved space instead.

On the left we have the SIM card and expandable storage tray (hybrid Dual-SIM slot), and the power button and volume rocker are on the right. The bottom of the device has two grilles, but only the one on the right houses the speaker. The headphones jack along with the ever popular IR blaster are on the right. The rear houses the 13MP camera, alongwith the dual-tone LED flash, below this rests the fingerprint sensor.

The Hyve Pryme is pretty big with a 5.7-inch display and if you like big phones, you'll feel right at home. There are no complains here. But if you are used to a 4.7-inch, 5-inch or a 5.2-inch phones, this may have an overwhelming presence at first.

Overall, the build and design of the phone is plain, generic and uninspiringn, and that isn’t a bad thing. Like I said, don’t judge a book by its cover. Its simple and some may appreciate that.

Display and UI

The Hyve Pryme's display has decent viewing angles, but visibility direct sunlight is sub-par, a problem we've seen on many other smartphones. It’s a 1080p display and if you plan on using it to watch movies and play games you will be satisfied with the colour reproduction. It doesn’t have vibrant colours like the OnePlus 3 or the warmer tones found on Samsung’s Super AMOLED panels. It has quite the neutral colour tone and I like it. Spiderman’s costumes look naturally red and blue, without any artificial effects in the Homecoming trailer and I liked it. The display performs reasonably in most cases.

The protecting skin (screen guard if you will) is prone to scratches quite easily, though, and that is a big disappointment. You can make out the scratches when you are watching a scene set in dark environments (like night or low light situations) and the scratches are quite prominently visible.

If there is one qualm I have with the display, it is the slight lag between you touching an action on screen and the smartphone responding. This will be noticeable when you type fast on the device. The touch latency is higher than ideal. Just a slight delay between you pressing a button and the corresponding action on screen. To be clear, this'll only be evident to typing ninjas. In our tests, we (Prasid to be precise) found this when unlocking the phone by typing the pin. The code took a fraction of a second more to register than what he is used to experiencing on a smartphone around 20k.

Moving to the UI, the company has chosen a near-stock Android experience, and that's a very good choice. There are no preloaded apps and the only real change you see is in the Settings menu. You'll find Turbo Download and flip cover options. Flip cover lets you lock the device when the flip cover is on and Turbo Download works using cellular and Wi-Fi to download large files faster. This works with files larger than 20MB.

The ability to use different networks and combine them to increase download speeds isn’t new, but not many smartphones have it. It's an interesting feature.

Overall the display is acceptable and the UI plays it safe with stock Android.

Performance

Moving on to the real world performance, this one of the few phones in India powered by the MediaTek Helio X20 SoC. For the uninitiated, this is a deca-core processor, i.e, 10-cores. The smartphone ran all the apps we threw at it and the load times were quick. These are non-gaming apps we use everyday like Facebook, WhatsApp, Gmail, SMS, Call Log, Contacts, Instagram and more. Multitasking is smooth and with more than 12 apps open, there was no problem with everyday tasks on the device.

The device comes with a fingerprint sensor, positioned below the rear camera. It is perfectly positioned to unlock the device while removing it from your pocket and it functions quite accurately too. Just don’t expect Nexus/Pixel Imprint level speed from the Hyve Pryme.

If you are a basic user, then there is nothing wrong with the Hyve Pryme for you. In fact, even if you play games that aren’t resource intensive, then this can be the phone for you. However, if you enjoy games like Injustice and Asphalt 8, then you are in for a bit of trouble.

Gaming

We played some graphically intensive games on the device and weren’t happy with the results. Games like Asphalt 8 showed noticeable frame skips and inconsistent frame rates. This doesn’t mean that the games are unplayable, but the experience isn’t what we have seen on smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 652 or the Snapdragon 820. If you enjoy playing graphically heavy games, then this one isn’t for you.

Camera

If there is one thing that I didn’t like about the camera on the Hyve Pryme, it’s the camera app. It uses a stock Android camera app from over two years ago and you will do better to replace it with one of the third party apps available on the Play Store.

View post on imgur.com

Coming to the quality of images, they are pretty good if you are looking simply share on social media websites or add filters to edit them. Images have quite good colour reproduction, but at the cost of details. Images lack detail, especially when you put them on a computer and see them in their full resolution, but the colour reproduction is good. The low light performance of the Hyve Pryme’s camera is good. The phone is one of the better low light performers in the sub-20k price range. Here again, there's noise and loss of detail, but colours are good.

Moving to the front facing camera, it is accompanied by an LED flash, and the 8MP shooter is good for those daily pouting sessions.

Battery life

On the PC mark battery test the device lasts for 7 hours and 11 minutes and that is quite impressive. For a heavy user, you will reach 20% towards the end of the day. This comprises of some email, 20 min of gaming, some social networking and the standard array of phone calls and some Youtubing. For the average user, the phone should last for a day and have some juice left for the next day, before hitting the wall socket.

One thing I don’t like is that the smartphone takes a over 2 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. That is a bummer. The official website says that the device has USB Type-C for fast charging, but it doesn’t come with a fast charger in the box.

Bottomline

Overall, the Hyve Pryme is a good phone for those looking for a functional device with a large display and simple looks. The gaming performance isn’t great for graphically heavy games. If you want a device for multimedia consumption and to get through a regular day of social networking, messaging and calls, then yes, the Hyve Pryme gets the job done. It is however overshadowed by devices such as the Lenovo Z2 Plus, which offers more built-in storage along with the tried and tested Snapdragon 820, or the LeEco Le Max 2, both of which are much faster.

Serum Institute Of India Gets DCGI Nod To Resume Clinical Trial Of Oxford COVID-19 Vaccine

Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial. The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be "scrupulously" followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:40 AM IST

New Delhi, Sep 15: Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial. The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be “scrupulously” followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).

SII has also been asked to submit to the DCGI’s office details of medication used in accordance with the protocol for management of adverse events. The DCGI had on September 11 directed Serum Institute of India to suspend any new recruitment in the phase two and three clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate till further orders in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the clinical trials in other countries because of ”an unexplained illness” in a participant in the study.

On Saturday, British-Swedish biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine have resumed in the UK after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority’s (MHRA) confirmed that the trials were safe. SII, which has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing the vaccine candidate for COVID-19, on Tuesday submitted the recommendations of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), UK and DSMB, India, and requested for permission to restart enrolment in the clinical trial.

According to Tuesday’s order issued by DCGI, the DSMB, UK, recommended that the investigators recommence all immunization in their clinical trials subject to certain conditions. DSMB, India, also has recommended to continue the study and enroll the remaining participants in the clinical trial as per protocol subject to certain conditions.

According to the order, SII has submitted revised participant information sheet, revised informed consent form and additional safety monitoring plan for the evolved participants. The Pune-based firm has also submitted a summary of safety follow up of seven days post first vaccination, stating that no serious adverse events were experienced by any of the subjects till the date of the reporting, and the reported adverse events were stated to be mild, resolved on their own and did not have any sequale.

“In view of the above, I Dr V G Somani, Drugs Controller General of India, Central Licensing Authority, after careful examination of your reply and the recommendations of the DSMB in India and in UK revoke herewith the order dated September 11 issued under Rule 30 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019. “You may recommence the clinical trial as recommended by DSMB, India, as per already approved protocol and the provisions laid down under the New Drugs and Clinical Trial Rules, 2019, subject to the conditions mentioned,” the order said.

UAE Official Says Israel Accord Should Dispel Doubts Over F-35 Sale

The United Arab Emirates wants to modernise its military and a request for U.S. F35 warplanes has been on the table since before a normalisation deal with Israel, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Tuesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:25 PM IST

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates wants to modernise its military and a request for U.S. F-35 warplanes has been on the table since before a normalisation deal with Israel, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Tuesday.

The agreement, known as the Abraham Accord, should dispel “any grain of doubt” on why the Gulf state should get stealth F-35 fighter jets from the United States, Gargash told reporters.

“The UAE seeks like any country that takes its military seriously, to modernize its military, always, so our request for the F35 and other systems pre-dates this agreement,” he said.

The UAE’s existing F-16 jets are now almost two decades old and it is time to renew them, he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his government would oppose any U.S. F-35 warplane sales to the UAE, despite forging relations with the Gulf power. U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday told Fox News he would have no problem selling the planes to the UAE.

The UAE and Gulf neighbour Bahrain are set to sign normalisation accords with Israel at a White House ceremony on Tuesday.

Gargash said the country’s decision to normalise ties broke a “psychological barrier” and is the way forward for the region, giving it more leverage.

He said Israel suspending its planned annexation of Palestinian land would stop the two-state solution being undermined and that the United States’ mediator role was assurance that further annexation would be suspended.

The Emirati minister said it was not the time to revise the Arab Peace Initiative, and that it remains the cornerstone of the UAE’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.

A strategic breakthrough is needed, he said, but “it will not happen overnight”.

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to identify the fan who sent profanely racist messages to a player from a rival team in an effort to ban the person from games and events.

The team responded Tuesday to racist messages sent to Arizona Cardinals safety Bishard "Budda" Baker, which Baker posted to his social media accounts Monday. In what appeared to be private messages on Instagram, a user identified only as "niners8" called Baker a "monkey ass n-----" and a "slave."

"Im all good with opposing fans talking trash," Baker wrote on Twitter with screenshots of the messages. "But This right here man... All you can do is pray for ppl like this."

NBC News was unable to find the Instagram account Tuesday.

Baker played with the Cardinals against the 49ers on Sunday in the NFL's opening week, delivering a notable tackle against 49ers tight end George Kittle. The Cardinals won, 24-20.

The 49ers said the anonymous fan did not represent the team or The Faithful, the moniker given to San Francisco fans. The team said it was working to identify the person who sent the messages to ban the person from events.

"Incidents like this demonstrate how much work remains to be done to address racism and hate in our society," the 49ers' statement said. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to that work."

The NFL has struggled to meaningfully address racism and racial injustice, despite public gestures to support social causes. When its season began Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri, the field at Arrowhead Stadium read "End Racism."

Kansas City Chiefs fans stood together as, through a video feed, Alicia Keys sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a poem set to music that has often been referred to as the "Black national anthem." The opposing team, the Houston Texans, remained in the locker room.

After the Texans returned to the field, Chiefs fans booed players as both teams locked arms during a moment of silence "dedicated to the ongoing fight for equality." The gesture was seen as a show of unity.

The NFL said "Lift Every Voice and Sing" would play at all Week 1 games in a nod to racial injustice, but critics have called it a meaningless gesture.

Several Miami Dolphins players, including veteran defensive back Bobby McCain and linebacker Elandon Roberts, released a video Thursday that said they would stay inside for the "publicity parade," calling the decision to play the song a "way to save face."

"If you speak up for change, I'll shut up and play," McCain said in the video, which was obtained by ESPN.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores appeared at the end of the video in a T-shirt that read "Vote" across his chest.

"Before the media starts wondering and guessing, they just answered all your questions," Flores said. "We'll just stay inside."

Other teams also chose to stay inside at subsequent games during the rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the national anthem or both, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers.

Leader of vegan 'army' who has been charged 22 times escapes conviction after storming a farm to 'rescue' pigs and hens

  • Leah Ava Whetton has been charged 22 times over her animal rights activism
  • She was fined $1,000 and no conviction recorded in Brisbane on Wednesday
  • The court heard she and her family had been receiving death threats recently
  • She later said she was happy with the outcome and that the fight was not over

The leader of a vegan 'army' who break into farms to perform 'animal rescues' revealed her passion has resulted in receiving death threats.

Leah Ava Whetton appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering a piggery and an egg production factory.

The 30-year-old has previously been charged 22 times for similar offences.

The most recent charges relate to Whetton breaking into Cameron Pastoral piggery at Pittsworth in 2018, and Canningvale poultry farm Williams Eggs in 2019.

Defence barrister Nathan Edridge told the court both Whetton and her mother had been subjected to abuse since the nature of her offending became public.

'My client... had death threats made to her and her mother and things like personal details being released,' he said before asking the court to consider the 'extra punishment' she has already received in public.

'One of these matters included a phone call where my client was threatened to have her fingers cut off and her jaw broken,' he said.

Prior to her sentencing, Whetton revealed she wasn't sure if she would receive a custodial sentence.

'The sentencing is still very important because I have been charged 22 times,' she said.

'My barrister and my lawyer will have to do an amazing job not to get me a conviction today.'

The court heard she disregarded clearly signed biosecurity procedures and handled piglets and laying hens.

The court was told Whetton had a history of similar offences and her offences were 'of a continual nature'.

But defence solicitor Lumme Rynderman told the court: 'Other than this offending which is grounded in her conscience, she has no criminal history.'

Whetton was fined $1,000 and managed to escape without conviction.

After the court appearance, she immediately took to Instagram to tell her 36,000 followers that she was 'happy' with the outcome.

'No conviction, no community order, no probation, I just got a fine... so I'm happy with that. Until next time, hey.'

'This isn't over until we are all free,' she wrote alongside the short video.

The group is known for staging sit ins and protests at farms over animal rights.

'What is done in the dark will be brought to the light,' Whetton said.

'We aren’t going anywhere. There is an army of us and it’s only growing. We won’t stop, until all are free.'

On Wednesday, a group of Whetton's supporters accompanied her to court with posters and signs to protest.

Several of the posters featured graphic images of slaughtered and dying animals along with several slogans including 'right to rescue', 'free range is a lie' and 'I wanted to live'.

The Hut Group Prepares To Trade After Sealing Bumper $7 Billion London IPO

Ecommerce firm The Hut Group is preparing for its first day of trading on Wednesday after batting away corporate governance concerns to seal the first major British initial public offering since the start of the COVID19 crisis.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:24 PM IST

LONDON: E-commerce firm The Hut Group is preparing for its first day of trading on Wednesday after batting away corporate governance concerns to seal the first major British initial public offering since the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

The company, which helps sell retail brands including Lookfantastic and skincare group ESPA, sold 376 million shares at 500 pence each to raise 1.88 billion pounds in a float that valued the company at 5.4 billion pounds ($6.96 billion).

The biggest London stock market debut since 2013 nets the company 920 million pounds while shareholders led by founder Matthew Moulding will share gross proceeds of 961 million pounds.

While market participants welcomed the boost to a terrible year for new listings with European IPO volumes at their lowest level in eight years, some investors have raised concerns over the structure of the deal.

For example, Moulding will remain both chairman and chief executive of the company, while the shares are to be issued in different “classes”, allowing him voting powers vastly superior to most other London-listed companies.

The structural features of the deal mean that The Hut Group will not be granted a so-called premium listing and will not be eligible for the FTSE 100 despite being comfortably big enough for the blue-chip index.

“There wasn’t too much concern about this during the bookbuild – investors understand that the founder is a key part of the story,” said a source familiar with the transaction.

The source added that the strong IPO environment meant other companies could take heart from THG’s success and launch deals.

“We expect it to be a busy fourth quarter,” he added.JP Morgan, Citi, Barclays and Goldman Sachs were global coordinators. HSBC, Jefferies and Numis acted as joint bookrunners.

Covid-hit Indian economy to witness gradual recovery, says RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said the country’s economic recovery will be gradual as the impact of Covid-19 has still not subsided.

While addressing the FICCI National Executive Committee Meeting, Das said the economic recovery has not yet been fully entrenched and went on to add that the GDP data in the first quarter of FY21 is a reflection of how the pandemic disrupted the country’s economy.

"Recovery is not yet fully entranched. In some sectors, the optic noticed in June and July appear to have levelled off. By all indications, the recovery is likely to be gradual as efforts towards reopening of the economy are confronted with rising infections," he said.

The RBI governor's comments come at a time when India's economy is going through a period of severe economic crisis. However, Das said that some high frequency indicators have improved and indicate "some stabilisation" of economic activity in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

"Contractions in many other sectors simultaneously easing," he said.

Shaktikanta Das went on to say that the central bank has ensured adequate liquidity infusion to facilitate borrowing by the government at low rate. Das also said that the central bank is "battle-ready" to take whatever steps needed to further stabilise the ailing economy.

"RBI stands battle ready to take whatever steps need to be taken for the economy," he said.

    Verdict

There’s not a single element that can be pointed out as ‘inferior’, in the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). The smartphone is built well, looks premium, offers a good display, a neatly organised interface, and a pretty decent camera. The performance is decent for lightweight usage, and barring load times, is usable under heavy load too. Battery stamina paints a similar picture - while it is not really extensive, the Galaxy A5 will still last you through an entire work day.

The OnePlus 3T is the outright better performer at this price, but the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is no pushover. It provides good end-user experience, and is still a worthy purchase for the average smartphone user as long as you are not a hardcore mobile gamer and are thoroughly intolerant of occasional frame drops or occasional load times.

Samsung Galaxy A5 2018 detailed review

There’s no substitute for good user experience, and we have often seen devices with incredible specifications on paper fall prey to seemingly underpowered foes based on optimisations, services and user interface. The highly competitive smartphone industry is seeing increasing importance being given to user interfaces and optimisations that contribute to the overall experience of using a smartphone. Samsung, being the veteran that it is, knows it very well.

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017), hereafter referred to as Galaxy A5, is proof of how big a difference can seamless user interface make to a smartphone. It is also proof that hardware innovation in mid-tier smartphones has hit a ceiling, and until the next wave of innovation brings in an all-dimensional change to mobile hardware, it is software that will play the key role in differentiating devices.

    Pricing, Specifications and Competition
Priced at Rs. 28,990, the Galaxy A5 is a direct competitor to the OnePlus 3T - a runaway success that provides flagship specifications for its price. Other devices in its vicinity include the Moto Z Play (Rs. 24,990), Honor 8 (Rs. 26,990) and the Apple iPhone 6 32GB (Rs. 27,999).

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is powered by an octa-core Exynos 7880 processor coupled with Mali-T830 MP3 GPU, along with 3GB of RAM, 32GB native storage (expandable), a 5.2-inch display with Full HD resolution and Super AMOLED panel, 3000mAh battery, two 16-megapixel cameras (front and rear) with f/1.9 lenses and a USB-C port. It weighs 159 grams, measures 7.9mm in thickness and runs on Android Marshmallow v6.0.1. It also retains the 3.5mm audio port.

    Build, Design and Ergonomics
At first sight, the Galaxy A5 looks mighty close to 2016’s Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S7. Samsung has lent the flagship design language down to this premium smartphone to great effect - the Galaxy A5 (2017) looks premium, and once you hold it in hand, it feels equally upmarket.

The metal chassis has a polished rear panel that gradually curves upward along the edges, fusing with the side rim (also metal-crafted) to add rigidity to the smartphone’s frame. The front has glossy Gorilla Glass 4 protection with an oleophobic coating to resist smudges, and the 5.2-inch display is flanked by narrow side bezels, all of which contribute to the device flaunting neat symmetry in design. The physical fingerprint sensor offers good, tactile feedback and also integrates the fingerprint sensor that works as intended. Flanking the button are the capacitive multitask and return buttons that light up on touch, but do not offer vibration feedback, which could have been a good addition here.

The overall design is neat and understated, without any unnecessary or heavy flourish. This makes the Galaxy A5 look quite premium, and the resemblance with the Galaxy S7 is stark. The two volume buttons to the left, and the power button to the right offer tactile feedback while being fairly rigid, which contributes further to making the Galaxy A5 feel like a very well-built device. The dual-SIM tray is at the top, while the 3.5mm audio port and the USB-C port are to the bottom, all of which are neatly spaced out, and there are no noticeable discrepancies about quality of build.

On overall terms, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) feels like a flagship smartphone that is built well, and can easily withstand a few drops without sustaining damage. It excels in design, too, which also synchronises well with the interface to add to the symmetric flow of Samsung’s relatively recent design language. The smartphone flaunts rounded edges and creases - a theme that continues with the design of the app icons as well. You also get a solitary speaker grille to the right, which I find to be the only loose end to Samsung’s efficient, minimalistic design statement.

In terms of ergonomics, the Galaxy A5 is impressive. The rounded edges, with the slightly curved rear panel add to the ease of holding the smartphone, and the 5.2-inch display helps keep the phone fairly compact. The glossy finish does sacrifice a bit on grip, but the phone is not outright slippery.

    Display and Interface
The 5.2-inch display is neither too small, nor rather large. For compact smartphone enthusiasts (like me), the Galaxy A5’s display is great for viewing content for long hours, and smartphone users looking for a display size of 5.5 inches or higher should look at the bigger sibling, the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017).

Coming to the SAMOLED display, colours produced are vibrant and contrast levels are good. The display produces decent blacks, and whites look quite pure. Reds get the preference over shades of blue, but on overall terms, the Full HD display is great to watch videos on. Luminance score of 625 lux proves that the display is actually impressive in terms of brightness, and although the glossy outer glass is a bit reflective, sunlight legibility is quite decent. This, combined with the good contrast levels and taut colours make it a good screen for playing vivid content, and there are no bursts of colour shifts or heavy oversaturation that many AMOLEDs tend to produce.

When in comes to the interface, Samsung has significantly evolved its UI. What you get now is a fairly refined interface that is devoid of needless, pre-installed apps except for Microsoft’s Office applications and the Opera Max Internet browser. The interface gets rounded icons and smoother animations that add to the pleasant overall interface. The rounded design language and seamless animations are in sync with the hardware design, and this contributes to a good overall experience. You also get the app drawer here, and the animations do reasonably well to hide performance shortcomings like app and page load times on the Galaxy A5.

You also get Samsung’s ‘S Bike Mode’ and an Always On display that can be customised to show calendar, date and notification icons. The Always On display is a neat, intuitive addition to the Galaxy A5, and helps in overall usage. The reworked Settings menu has been reorganised, but everything is categorised fairly well, so you would not really be struggling to find the most common settings here.

The only real hiccup about the Galaxy A5’s display is its touch response, which is rather jittery. More often than not, I had to end up tapping at least twice on an app before it would open, and the same goes with page swipes. While we may have passed this as a one-off issue, it was too recurrent and also occurred on the Galaxy A7 (2017), leading us to believe that this might just be a display/performance issue that has till now been left unresolved. It does not occur all the time, but is recurrent enough to raise a little bit of annoyance on what is otherwise a rather good display with a reasonably smooth end-user interface.

    Performance
The octa-core Exynos 7880 SoC includes a tri-core Mali-T830 GPU and a Cat.7 LTE-Advanced modem on board, all of which is paired with 3GB of memory and 32GB of storage space. In terms of performance, while there are no real jitters, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) does take longer than optimum to load most applications, and almost everything - from switching between apps to loading videos and typing a text message have split-second delays. This is quite noticeable, although the UI makes a decent attempt of masking these delays with animations.

Despite the split-second delays, most usage is fairly seamless, and the Galaxy A5 allows you to load and switch between up to six everyday apps with relative ease. You can switch between the Chrome browser, Facebook, Messenger, SMS, S Notes and Gmail reasonably seamlessly, although the loading time for each of these apps and the number of unregistered taps on the display tend to increase as you increase the fluency of multitasking.

When it comes to gaming, the Galaxy A5 (2017) does a decent job with heavy and lightweight titles alike. You get nearly constant average frame rates of 29fps, which is decent for most mobile gamers. In-game menus do take some time to load, but the gameplay itself is reasonably decent, and is certainly more than acceptable. However, meticulous users with an eye for detail will spot the sudden jitters and skipped frames while gaming on the Galaxy A5, and although the jitters are not majorly disruptive of the overall gameplay, it does hamper the experience.

When it comes to network performance, the Galaxy A5 retains 4G connectivity steadily, and is as good as you can hope for. There were no unprecedented drops in terms of network stability, for both data and WiFi. Calling works well too, although in a number of instances, my voice did not go through after I made a call. This could have multiple causes, and may have also been because of momentary network drops, and is not recurrent enough to be singled out as a network performance issue.

The integrated speaker in the Galaxy A5 is rather weak, and the solitary grille to the left produces audio in low volume. It is also placed at a rather odd position, and is the only square peg in the overall well-rounded engineering.

    Benchmarks

    Camera
Both the front and rear cameras of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) use 16-megapixel image sensors with f/1.9 lenses. Talking about the rear camera first, the Galaxy A5 uses an unspecified sensor that produces decent photographs. The rear camera produces good details in photographs along with good colours, albeit with an added touch of vibrancy and contrast. The colours are also oversaturated, leaving you with lesser room for post-processing it. However, colour tones are deep, and dynamic range is quite good.

The overall sharpness of photographs shot by the Galaxy A5 is quite good, and it also does well in terms of finer details. Sharp edges contribute to well-defined details, and the added colour saturation makes photographs really pop. The only loose end here is the Galaxy A5’s inability to efficiently adjust the light in a frame. In photographs with a strong light source and shadow areas, the Galaxy A5 tends to brighten the overall frame to provide ample light to the darker regions, thereby clipping large parts of the highlights. This will lead to clipped backgrounds and bleached details, and alternatively, you get excessively dimmed shadows that tend to lose details as the brighter areas retain definition.

One good element of the Galaxy A5 is that it does not struggle with noise, and the image noise reduction algorithms control grains fairly well. This tends to produce softer photographs in low light, but in exchange for the slightly compromised sharpness, you get cleaner photographs. The trade-off is worth it, as even the softening of details is not really aggressive.

The 16-megapixel front camera is rather impressive, and can take on most selfie-centric smartphones in the market today. The camera produces reasonably decent details, along with appreciable facial textures. Colour tones are close to source, which is also quite good. The beautify mode adds customisable settings that include filters for skin tone, ‘slim face’ and ‘large eyes’. You can quite literally make your face look more chiseled to impress others on the Internet, and even get larger eyes, if that is your thing. Adjusting skin tones removes blemishes to varying extent, along with removing skin textures. Many do prefer this, and each of these modes work as intended.

The camera app itself suffers from the touch response issue that the rest of the Galaxy A5 does too. Focusing is slower than many other smartphones in comparison, which can lead to blurry photographs if you are shooting a fast-moving object. The Galaxy A5 can only record Full HD videos capped at 30fps, wherein other similar smartphones can record in Ultra HD. The overall video quality is still quite decent, but video bloggers and enthusiasts may find this slightly restrictive.

    Battery life
The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is powered by a 3000mAh battery that does get the job done, but does not offer extensive battery stamina. PCMark battery scores relay 6 hours 36 minutes of battery life, which translates to a little more than 13 hours of usage time. Our typical usage covered an hour and 30 minutes of calling, cumulative social media and internet browsing time of over three hours, an hour and 30 minutes of music playback, 45 minutes of GPS-enabled navigation, an hour of video streaming via YouTube and 30 minutes of gaming, apart from the standard array of SMS messaging and emails. This is not very intensive usage per se, and reflects the average duration of usage that most will put their phones through.

Essentially, if you start the day at 9am with 100% charge, you will almost certainly need to plug it in charge by 10pm at the end of the day, unless you mostly make calls and view/browse messages and emails, in which case the Galaxy A5 lasts for a little more than 18 hours. Hence, while the Galaxy A5 will cover your entire day’s usage, you will need to charge it at the end of the day.

    Bottomline

Cardi B files for divorce from Offset weeks after insisting 'there's a lot of love'

Cardi B files for divorce from Offset weeks after insisting 'there's a lot of love'

A report has claimed that Cardi's decision to divorce Offset came after she found that he had been unfaithful yet again.

Cardi B stuck with Offset even after he was involved in a cheating scandal, but she has finally called it quits by filing for divorce.

Cardi B filed for divorce from Migos' Offset, her husband of three years, at an Atlanta courthouse in Georgia on Tuesday. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the "WAP" rapper is seeking primary physical custody as well as legal custody of their two-year-old daughter, Kulture.

The 27-year-old, legal name Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, has also sought that Offset pay child support, her legal expenses and that there be "an equitable division of all marital assets." The documents also mentioned that the duo is currently separated and that "there are no prospects for a reconciliation."

Cardi B secretly married the "Clout" rapper in September 2017 and didn't make it public until June 2018. Offset proposed to an apparently surprised Cardi at the Philly Powerhouse concert in October 2017, but it later turned out that they had already been legally married for over a month at the time of their engagement. The couple welcomed their daughter, Kulture, a month after announcing their nuptials.

The couple went through a rough patch in their marriage that same year when Cardi accused her husband of cheating with two bartending sisters at a strip club in Queens, New York, and was subsequently charged with assault by the bartenders. The case is still pending in Queens Supreme Court. Offset confessed the infidelity on his part and even crashed his wife's performance at the Rolling Loud festival to beg for forgiveness, a gesture which was described as toxic masculinity by many. The couple had almost separated, but Cardi eventually took him back.

Cardi has spoken about her marriage several times since then, defending her decision to reconcile with Offset even after the cheating scandal. In an interview with Vogue in January this year, Cardi said: "When me and my husband got into our issues—you know, he cheated and everything—and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me. But it's real-life sh*t. People that be in marriages for years, when they say till death do us part, they not talking about little arguments like if you leave the fridge open."

"I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it's really us against the world," the rapper-actress said, adding that monogamy continues to be the only way in her life. She also took to Instagram in December last year to defend Offset after he was accused of sending a flirty message to his former fling.

In fact, the divorce filing comes just weeks after Cardi insisted that "there's a lot of love" between her and her husband. In an interview with Elle last month, the rapper said: "I do know that my relationship has a lot of drama and everything. But there's a lot of love, there's a lot of passion, there's a lot of trust, there's a big friendship. It's always us against the world."

Meanwhile, a report in People magazine has claimed that Cardi's decision to divorce Offset came after she found that the 28-year-old had been unfaithful yet again. A source told the outlet: "Offset has pretty much cheated the entire time (they've been together), but Cardi looked the other way because of the baby. She also didn't want to be embarrassed. But she's had enough."

More than 100 people turned up at an A&E asking for Covid-19 tests, sparking a plea from a hospital trust for anyone who is not seriously ill to stay away.
Bolton NHS Trust said dozens of people went to Royal Bolton Hospital because they could not get into test centres.
Chairwoman Prof Donna Hall said it showed a "lack of a cohesive strategy" in the government's "failing" approach.
The government said NHS Test and Trace was "working" but was also dealing with people without symptoms taking tests
Bolton has the highest infection rate in England with 196 cases per 100,000 people recorded on Saturday.
The total number of cases rose from 401 on 5 September to 564 a week later.

image captionThe government said people who were not eligible were requesting tests
The trust's medical director Dr Francis Andrews said people should only go to hospital if they are "extremely unwell or referred by your GP".
"We are extremely busy in our emergency department as a result of this increase," he said.
"Only attend this department if you have experienced a life-threatening accident or illness and need urgent medical attention."
Prof Hall said the situation now was different to March when they had extra staff drafted in and were not expected to continue with planned operations.
"This failure of the test-and-trace system is placing huge pressure on the NHS and social care," she said.
"We had 100 people in our accident and emergency unit.
"We've now got 30 people who are Covid-positive and we've got five people in our high-dependency unit so this virus is not going away.
"I've felt that there has been a real lack of a cohesive strategy for the whole containment of Covid-19 and for test and trace."
Lancashire's director of public health said the system was at "breaking point" and was "compromising our ability to stop the transmission".
Dr Sakthi Karunanithi said it was "beyond frustrating", adding: "The issue is lab capacity.
"We have our own community testing sites and were doing about 200 tests a day - [on Tuesday] we did 1,639 tests. We can't go on like this."
Bolton Council said a test centre had been due to open on Saturday at the Last Drop Village Hotel in response to the growing number of cases but was delayed when "an external business" failed to turn up.
A spokesman said although the delay had been "out of our hands", the authority was "working with the government and their partners to find out what has happened".
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said NHS Test and Trace was "working", adding the system was "processing a million tests a week, but we are seeing significant demand for tests, including from people who do not have symptoms and are not otherwise eligible".
He said anyone with an appointment would not be turned away, and new booking slots and home testing kits were being made available daily.

Biden Appeals To Critical Latino Voters On Florida Campaign Swing

Democrat Joe Biden on Tuesday made his first campaign visit of the year to Florida, where opinion polls show a tight race against President Donald Trump amid signs of lagging support for Biden among the battleground state's crucial Hispanic voters.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:42 AM IST

TAMPA, Florida: Democrat Joe Biden on Tuesday made his first campaign visit of the year to Florida, where opinion polls show a tight race against President Donald Trump amid signs of lagging support for Biden among the battleground state’s crucial Hispanic voters.

With less than 50 days until the Nov. 3 election, the Biden campaign is trying to overcome concerns about enthusiasm among Florida Latinos and a disinformation campaign that has tried to paint the moderate Democratic nominee as a socialist.

A NBC News/Marist opinion poll showed the two White House contenders in a dead heat in Florida and Trump with a 4-point edge over Biden among the state’s Latinos. Democrat Hillary Clinton won their votes by 27 percentage points in 2016, according to exit polls. Other polls have shown Biden leading among state Hispanics but still trailing Clinton’s support.

Trump won Florida over Clinton by just 1.2 percentage points, which helped propel him to the White House. His inroads with Florida Hispanics have been fueled by his strength with conservative Cuban-Americans, a Republican-leaning bloc he has courted throughout his presidency.

“Clearly, there has been some hemorrhaging of Hispanic support going on, mainly Cuban-Americans,” said Democratic state Senator Annette Taddeo, a Colombian-American. “The Republicans have worked really, really hard, and they have been constantly present.”

The steady drumbeat of Republican attacks on Biden, the vice president under Barack Obama, falsely labeling him a socialist has also taken a toll, Florida Democrats said.

Florida’s Republican lieutenant governor, Jeanette Núñez, a daughter of Cuban immigrants, said Biden’s agenda contradicted the values of “faith, family and freedom” held by Hispanic voters.

“He is completely in the pocket of the radical left – those people who look fondly at the socialist dictatorships in Cuba, Venezuela and elsewhere,” Núñez told reporters on a call arranged by the Trump campaign on Tuesday.

Felice Gorordo, a Cuban-American Biden ally, said the campaign should focus on younger Cuban voters, who do not see foreign policy as the No. 1 issue, making them more open to the campaign’s central message on recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

Some Florida Democrats said they had noticed a sharp rise in videos and commentary in social media and texts repeating falsehoods about Biden and pushing other conspiracy theories about Democrats.

“We are seeing a massive disinformation campaign in Spanish aimed at our community calling Biden and Democrats socialists, and it is having an effect,” said Evelyn Perez-Verdia, a Colombian-American Democratic strategist in south Florida.

Asked by a Reuters reporter as he boarded a flight to Florida how he would handle disinformation campaigns targeting Latino voters, Biden said he would “Just tell the truth.”

“Everybody knows who Trump is. People are going to show up and vote,” Biden said.

    LINCHPIN

Florida, where Hispanics make up about 20% of the state electorate, is a linchpin in Trump’s re-election strategy. A Biden win of Florida’s 29 electoral votes would sharply reduce Trump’s chances of another term – no Republican has won the presidency without Florida since Calvin Coolidge in 1924.

Trump, a former New York businessman, changed his permanent residence to Florida last year.

Nationally, Hispanics make up the largest minority voting group, at more than 13% of eligible voters. Biden’s support with Latino voters across the country has dropped; they favored him over Trump by 9 points in August, down from 30 points in July, according to Reuters/Ipsos data.

The Biden campaign, urged by Taddeo and other Democrats to do more to court Latinos, has stepped up Spanish-language and bilingual advertising and hired more staff.

Ahead of events on Tuesday in Tampa and Kissimmee, two Florida cities with heavy Puerto Rican populations, Biden said: “I am going to work like the devil to make sure I turn every Latino and Hispanic vote.”

As part of his trip Biden is expected to sit for an interview with Telemundo, a Spanish-language network.

He will get some help from former Democratic primary rival Michael Bloomberg, who will spend $100 million on Biden’s behalf in Florida, with a particular focus on Latino voters.

Polls show Biden running ahead of Clinton’s level of 2016 support among seniors in Florida, another crucial voting bloc, and among white voters, giving him plenty of pathways to reach a majority, Democrats said.

They said there was plenty of opportunity for Biden to make up ground with Florida Hispanics, particularly among the state’s non-Cuban Latinos who include a fast-growing Puerto Rican population and Mexicans, Colombians and Venezuelans.

Biden has vowed to rescind many of the hardline immigration policies put in place by Trump’s administration, and has emphasized the need for broad health and economic strategies to recover from the novel coronavirus pandemic that has hit Latino communities particularly hard.

Unite the Country, a Democratic group that supports Biden, is spending $1.4 million on digital advertising aimed at Latinos in south Florida. Steve Schale, the group’s chief executive, said the group could be most effective by increasing support of non-Cuban Hispanic voters who are not attached to a party and are typically more persuadable.
