Serum Institute Of India Gets DCGI Nod To Resume Clinical Trial Of Oxford COVID-19 Vaccine

Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial. The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be "scrupulously" followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).

New Delhi, Sep 15: Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani on Tuesday gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country while revoking its earlier order of suspending any new recruitment for phase two and three trial. The DCGI, however, put certain conditions like taking extra care during screening, providing additional information in informed consent and close monitoring for adverse events during follow-up of the study which have to be “scrupulously” followed by Serum Institute of India (SII).

SII has also been asked to submit to the DCGI’s office details of medication used in accordance with the protocol for management of adverse events. The DCGI had on September 11 directed Serum Institute of India to suspend any new recruitment in the phase two and three clinical trial of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate till further orders in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the clinical trials in other countries because of ”an unexplained illness” in a participant in the study.

On Saturday, British-Swedish biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine have resumed in the UK after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority’s (MHRA) confirmed that the trials were safe. SII, which has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing the vaccine candidate for COVID-19, on Tuesday submitted the recommendations of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), UK and DSMB, India, and requested for permission to restart enrolment in the clinical trial.

According to Tuesday’s order issued by DCGI, the DSMB, UK, recommended that the investigators recommence all immunization in their clinical trials subject to certain conditions. DSMB, India, also has recommended to continue the study and enroll the remaining participants in the clinical trial as per protocol subject to certain conditions.

According to the order, SII has submitted revised participant information sheet, revised informed consent form and additional safety monitoring plan for the evolved participants. The Pune-based firm has also submitted a summary of safety follow up of seven days post first vaccination, stating that no serious adverse events were experienced by any of the subjects till the date of the reporting, and the reported adverse events were stated to be mild, resolved on their own and did not have any sequale.

“In view of the above, I Dr V G Somani, Drugs Controller General of India, Central Licensing Authority, after careful examination of your reply and the recommendations of the DSMB in India and in UK revoke herewith the order dated September 11 issued under Rule 30 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019. “You may recommence the clinical trial as recommended by DSMB, India, as per already approved protocol and the provisions laid down under the New Drugs and Clinical Trial Rules, 2019, subject to the conditions mentioned,” the order said.

UAE Official Says Israel Accord Should Dispel Doubts Over F-35 Sale

The United Arab Emirates wants to modernise its military and a request for U.S. F35 warplanes has been on the table since before a normalisation deal with Israel, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Tuesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:25 PM IST

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates wants to modernise its military and a request for U.S. F-35 warplanes has been on the table since before a normalisation deal with Israel, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Tuesday.

The agreement, known as the Abraham Accord, should dispel “any grain of doubt” on why the Gulf state should get stealth F-35 fighter jets from the United States, Gargash told reporters.

“The UAE seeks like any country that takes its military seriously, to modernize its military, always, so our request for the F35 and other systems pre-dates this agreement,” he said.

The UAE’s existing F-16 jets are now almost two decades old and it is time to renew them, he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his government would oppose any U.S. F-35 warplane sales to the UAE, despite forging relations with the Gulf power. U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday told Fox News he would have no problem selling the planes to the UAE.

The UAE and Gulf neighbour Bahrain are set to sign normalisation accords with Israel at a White House ceremony on Tuesday.

Gargash said the country’s decision to normalise ties broke a “psychological barrier” and is the way forward for the region, giving it more leverage.

He said Israel suspending its planned annexation of Palestinian land would stop the two-state solution being undermined and that the United States’ mediator role was assurance that further annexation would be suspended.

The Emirati minister said it was not the time to revise the Arab Peace Initiative, and that it remains the cornerstone of the UAE’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.

A strategic breakthrough is needed, he said, but “it will not happen overnight”.

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to identify the fan who sent profanely racist messages to a player from a rival team in an effort to ban the person from games and events.

The team responded Tuesday to racist messages sent to Arizona Cardinals safety Bishard "Budda" Baker, which Baker posted to his social media accounts Monday. In what appeared to be private messages on Instagram, a user identified only as "niners8" called Baker a "monkey ass n-----" and a "slave."

"Im all good with opposing fans talking trash," Baker wrote on Twitter with screenshots of the messages. "But This right here man... All you can do is pray for ppl like this."

NBC News was unable to find the Instagram account Tuesday.

Baker played with the Cardinals against the 49ers on Sunday in the NFL's opening week, delivering a notable tackle against 49ers tight end George Kittle. The Cardinals won, 24-20.

The 49ers said the anonymous fan did not represent the team or The Faithful, the moniker given to San Francisco fans. The team said it was working to identify the person who sent the messages to ban the person from events.

"Incidents like this demonstrate how much work remains to be done to address racism and hate in our society," the 49ers' statement said. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to that work."

The NFL has struggled to meaningfully address racism and racial injustice, despite public gestures to support social causes. When its season began Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri, the field at Arrowhead Stadium read "End Racism."

Kansas City Chiefs fans stood together as, through a video feed, Alicia Keys sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a poem set to music that has often been referred to as the "Black national anthem." The opposing team, the Houston Texans, remained in the locker room.

After the Texans returned to the field, Chiefs fans booed players as both teams locked arms during a moment of silence "dedicated to the ongoing fight for equality." The gesture was seen as a show of unity.

The NFL said "Lift Every Voice and Sing" would play at all Week 1 games in a nod to racial injustice, but critics have called it a meaningless gesture.

Several Miami Dolphins players, including veteran defensive back Bobby McCain and linebacker Elandon Roberts, released a video Thursday that said they would stay inside for the "publicity parade," calling the decision to play the song a "way to save face."

"If you speak up for change, I'll shut up and play," McCain said in the video, which was obtained by ESPN.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores appeared at the end of the video in a T-shirt that read "Vote" across his chest.

"Before the media starts wondering and guessing, they just answered all your questions," Flores said. "We'll just stay inside."

Other teams also chose to stay inside at subsequent games during the rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the national anthem or both, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers.

Leader of vegan 'army' who has been charged 22 times escapes conviction after storming a farm to 'rescue' pigs and hens

  • Leah Ava Whetton has been charged 22 times over her animal rights activism
  • She was fined $1,000 and no conviction recorded in Brisbane on Wednesday
  • The court heard she and her family had been receiving death threats recently
  • She later said she was happy with the outcome and that the fight was not over

The leader of a vegan 'army' who break into farms to perform 'animal rescues' revealed her passion has resulted in receiving death threats.

Leah Ava Whetton appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering a piggery and an egg production factory.

The 30-year-old has previously been charged 22 times for similar offences.

The most recent charges relate to Whetton breaking into Cameron Pastoral piggery at Pittsworth in 2018, and Canningvale poultry farm Williams Eggs in 2019.

Defence barrister Nathan Edridge told the court both Whetton and her mother had been subjected to abuse since the nature of her offending became public.

'My client... had death threats made to her and her mother and things like personal details being released,' he said before asking the court to consider the 'extra punishment' she has already received in public.

'One of these matters included a phone call where my client was threatened to have her fingers cut off and her jaw broken,' he said.

Prior to her sentencing, Whetton revealed she wasn't sure if she would receive a custodial sentence.

'The sentencing is still very important because I have been charged 22 times,' she said.

'My barrister and my lawyer will have to do an amazing job not to get me a conviction today.'

The court heard she disregarded clearly signed biosecurity procedures and handled piglets and laying hens.

The court was told Whetton had a history of similar offences and her offences were 'of a continual nature'.

But defence solicitor Lumme Rynderman told the court: 'Other than this offending which is grounded in her conscience, she has no criminal history.'

Whetton was fined $1,000 and managed to escape without conviction.

After the court appearance, she immediately took to Instagram to tell her 36,000 followers that she was 'happy' with the outcome.

'No conviction, no community order, no probation, I just got a fine... so I'm happy with that. Until next time, hey.'

'This isn't over until we are all free,' she wrote alongside the short video.

The group is known for staging sit ins and protests at farms over animal rights.

'What is done in the dark will be brought to the light,' Whetton said.

'We aren’t going anywhere. There is an army of us and it’s only growing. We won’t stop, until all are free.'

On Wednesday, a group of Whetton's supporters accompanied her to court with posters and signs to protest.

Several of the posters featured graphic images of slaughtered and dying animals along with several slogans including 'right to rescue', 'free range is a lie' and 'I wanted to live'.

The Hut Group Prepares To Trade After Sealing Bumper $7 Billion London IPO

Ecommerce firm The Hut Group is preparing for its first day of trading on Wednesday after batting away corporate governance concerns to seal the first major British initial public offering since the start of the COVID19 crisis.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:24 PM IST

LONDON: E-commerce firm The Hut Group is preparing for its first day of trading on Wednesday after batting away corporate governance concerns to seal the first major British initial public offering since the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

The company, which helps sell retail brands including Lookfantastic and skincare group ESPA, sold 376 million shares at 500 pence each to raise 1.88 billion pounds in a float that valued the company at 5.4 billion pounds ($6.96 billion).

The biggest London stock market debut since 2013 nets the company 920 million pounds while shareholders led by founder Matthew Moulding will share gross proceeds of 961 million pounds.

While market participants welcomed the boost to a terrible year for new listings with European IPO volumes at their lowest level in eight years, some investors have raised concerns over the structure of the deal.

For example, Moulding will remain both chairman and chief executive of the company, while the shares are to be issued in different “classes”, allowing him voting powers vastly superior to most other London-listed companies.

The structural features of the deal mean that The Hut Group will not be granted a so-called premium listing and will not be eligible for the FTSE 100 despite being comfortably big enough for the blue-chip index.

“There wasn’t too much concern about this during the bookbuild – investors understand that the founder is a key part of the story,” said a source familiar with the transaction.

The source added that the strong IPO environment meant other companies could take heart from THG’s success and launch deals.

“We expect it to be a busy fourth quarter,” he added.JP Morgan, Citi, Barclays and Goldman Sachs were global coordinators. HSBC, Jefferies and Numis acted as joint bookrunners.

Covid-hit Indian economy to witness gradual recovery, says RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said the country’s economic recovery will be gradual as the impact of Covid-19 has still not subsided.

While addressing the FICCI National Executive Committee Meeting, Das said the economic recovery has not yet been fully entrenched and went on to add that the GDP data in the first quarter of FY21 is a reflection of how the pandemic disrupted the country’s economy.

"Recovery is not yet fully entranched. In some sectors, the optic noticed in June and July appear to have levelled off. By all indications, the recovery is likely to be gradual as efforts towards reopening of the economy are confronted with rising infections," he said.

The RBI governor's comments come at a time when India's economy is going through a period of severe economic crisis. However, Das said that some high frequency indicators have improved and indicate "some stabilisation" of economic activity in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

"Contractions in many other sectors simultaneously easing," he said.

Shaktikanta Das went on to say that the central bank has ensured adequate liquidity infusion to facilitate borrowing by the government at low rate. Das also said that the central bank is "battle-ready" to take whatever steps needed to further stabilise the ailing economy.

"RBI stands battle ready to take whatever steps need to be taken for the economy," he said.

The incident took place in Ontario, Canada, on a Sunday night bet. A burglar broke into a house, while the residents were fast asleep and decided to defecate inside the family's dishwasher.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 7:47 PM IST

What is the craziest burglary tale you have heard? Or answer this – what is the craziest poop story you have heard? Well you probably would have recalled some incident of note, but this one is hard to beat.

The incident took place in Ontario, Canada, on a Sunday night. A burglar broke into a house, while the residents were fast asleep. What happened next was beyond anyone’s wildest guess. The intruder then pooped in the dishwasher. Yes, you read it right. And that is it. The burglar did not steal anything, nor did the person cause any damage, besides what was done to the dishwasher.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the perpetrator “defecated on the open dishwasher door before leaving the residence”.

Following the incident, the cops at Guelph Police Service are all out to grab the ‘poopster’. According to the report filed by the police, the anonymous trespasser entered the home in the dead of the night through a sliding glass door, while the inhabitants of the house were sound asleep. The cops have even issued a lookout notice to catch the perp.

The police have asked anyone with information about the whereabouts of the burglar or any clue that may help solve the “crime” to contact them. The Guelph Police has also urged the public to keep their doors and windows locked and secure their home properly to avoid such incidents.

The biggest puzzle for the investigators at this point would be the motive. What could possibly be the motive of carrying out such a “heinous” act! According to experts in the area, some criminals experience sexual gratification by defecating in public. If that is so, the residents of the area should watch out and heed to the advice of the local administration. Better safe than sorry.

    Verdict

There’s not a single element that can be pointed out as ‘inferior’, in the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). The smartphone is built well, looks premium, offers a good display, a neatly organised interface, and a pretty decent camera. The performance is decent for lightweight usage, and barring load times, is usable under heavy load too. Battery stamina paints a similar picture - while it is not really extensive, the Galaxy A5 will still last you through an entire work day.

The OnePlus 3T is the outright better performer at this price, but the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is no pushover. It provides good end-user experience, and is still a worthy purchase for the average smartphone user as long as you are not a hardcore mobile gamer and are thoroughly intolerant of occasional frame drops or occasional load times.

Samsung Galaxy A5 2018 detailed review

There’s no substitute for good user experience, and we have often seen devices with incredible specifications on paper fall prey to seemingly underpowered foes based on optimisations, services and user interface. The highly competitive smartphone industry is seeing increasing importance being given to user interfaces and optimisations that contribute to the overall experience of using a smartphone. Samsung, being the veteran that it is, knows it very well.

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017), hereafter referred to as Galaxy A5, is proof of how big a difference can seamless user interface make to a smartphone. It is also proof that hardware innovation in mid-tier smartphones has hit a ceiling, and until the next wave of innovation brings in an all-dimensional change to mobile hardware, it is software that will play the key role in differentiating devices.

    Pricing, Specifications and Competition
Priced at Rs. 28,990, the Galaxy A5 is a direct competitor to the OnePlus 3T - a runaway success that provides flagship specifications for its price. Other devices in its vicinity include the Moto Z Play (Rs. 24,990), Honor 8 (Rs. 26,990) and the Apple iPhone 6 32GB (Rs. 27,999).

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is powered by an octa-core Exynos 7880 processor coupled with Mali-T830 MP3 GPU, along with 3GB of RAM, 32GB native storage (expandable), a 5.2-inch display with Full HD resolution and Super AMOLED panel, 3000mAh battery, two 16-megapixel cameras (front and rear) with f/1.9 lenses and a USB-C port. It weighs 159 grams, measures 7.9mm in thickness and runs on Android Marshmallow v6.0.1. It also retains the 3.5mm audio port.

    Build, Design and Ergonomics
At first sight, the Galaxy A5 looks mighty close to 2016’s Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S7. Samsung has lent the flagship design language down to this premium smartphone to great effect - the Galaxy A5 (2017) looks premium, and once you hold it in hand, it feels equally upmarket.

The metal chassis has a polished rear panel that gradually curves upward along the edges, fusing with the side rim (also metal-crafted) to add rigidity to the smartphone’s frame. The front has glossy Gorilla Glass 4 protection with an oleophobic coating to resist smudges, and the 5.2-inch display is flanked by narrow side bezels, all of which contribute to the device flaunting neat symmetry in design. The physical fingerprint sensor offers good, tactile feedback and also integrates the fingerprint sensor that works as intended. Flanking the button are the capacitive multitask and return buttons that light up on touch, but do not offer vibration feedback, which could have been a good addition here.

The overall design is neat and understated, without any unnecessary or heavy flourish. This makes the Galaxy A5 look quite premium, and the resemblance with the Galaxy S7 is stark. The two volume buttons to the left, and the power button to the right offer tactile feedback while being fairly rigid, which contributes further to making the Galaxy A5 feel like a very well-built device. The dual-SIM tray is at the top, while the 3.5mm audio port and the USB-C port are to the bottom, all of which are neatly spaced out, and there are no noticeable discrepancies about quality of build.

On overall terms, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) feels like a flagship smartphone that is built well, and can easily withstand a few drops without sustaining damage. It excels in design, too, which also synchronises well with the interface to add to the symmetric flow of Samsung’s relatively recent design language. The smartphone flaunts rounded edges and creases - a theme that continues with the design of the app icons as well. You also get a solitary speaker grille to the right, which I find to be the only loose end to Samsung’s efficient, minimalistic design statement.

In terms of ergonomics, the Galaxy A5 is impressive. The rounded edges, with the slightly curved rear panel add to the ease of holding the smartphone, and the 5.2-inch display helps keep the phone fairly compact. The glossy finish does sacrifice a bit on grip, but the phone is not outright slippery.

    Display and Interface
The 5.2-inch display is neither too small, nor rather large. For compact smartphone enthusiasts (like me), the Galaxy A5’s display is great for viewing content for long hours, and smartphone users looking for a display size of 5.5 inches or higher should look at the bigger sibling, the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017).

Coming to the SAMOLED display, colours produced are vibrant and contrast levels are good. The display produces decent blacks, and whites look quite pure. Reds get the preference over shades of blue, but on overall terms, the Full HD display is great to watch videos on. Luminance score of 625 lux proves that the display is actually impressive in terms of brightness, and although the glossy outer glass is a bit reflective, sunlight legibility is quite decent. This, combined with the good contrast levels and taut colours make it a good screen for playing vivid content, and there are no bursts of colour shifts or heavy oversaturation that many AMOLEDs tend to produce.

When in comes to the interface, Samsung has significantly evolved its UI. What you get now is a fairly refined interface that is devoid of needless, pre-installed apps except for Microsoft’s Office applications and the Opera Max Internet browser. The interface gets rounded icons and smoother animations that add to the pleasant overall interface. The rounded design language and seamless animations are in sync with the hardware design, and this contributes to a good overall experience. You also get the app drawer here, and the animations do reasonably well to hide performance shortcomings like app and page load times on the Galaxy A5.

You also get Samsung’s ‘S Bike Mode’ and an Always On display that can be customised to show calendar, date and notification icons. The Always On display is a neat, intuitive addition to the Galaxy A5, and helps in overall usage. The reworked Settings menu has been reorganised, but everything is categorised fairly well, so you would not really be struggling to find the most common settings here.

The only real hiccup about the Galaxy A5’s display is its touch response, which is rather jittery. More often than not, I had to end up tapping at least twice on an app before it would open, and the same goes with page swipes. While we may have passed this as a one-off issue, it was too recurrent and also occurred on the Galaxy A7 (2017), leading us to believe that this might just be a display/performance issue that has till now been left unresolved. It does not occur all the time, but is recurrent enough to raise a little bit of annoyance on what is otherwise a rather good display with a reasonably smooth end-user interface.

    Performance
The octa-core Exynos 7880 SoC includes a tri-core Mali-T830 GPU and a Cat.7 LTE-Advanced modem on board, all of which is paired with 3GB of memory and 32GB of storage space. In terms of performance, while there are no real jitters, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) does take longer than optimum to load most applications, and almost everything - from switching between apps to loading videos and typing a text message have split-second delays. This is quite noticeable, although the UI makes a decent attempt of masking these delays with animations.

Despite the split-second delays, most usage is fairly seamless, and the Galaxy A5 allows you to load and switch between up to six everyday apps with relative ease. You can switch between the Chrome browser, Facebook, Messenger, SMS, S Notes and Gmail reasonably seamlessly, although the loading time for each of these apps and the number of unregistered taps on the display tend to increase as you increase the fluency of multitasking.

When it comes to gaming, the Galaxy A5 (2017) does a decent job with heavy and lightweight titles alike. You get nearly constant average frame rates of 29fps, which is decent for most mobile gamers. In-game menus do take some time to load, but the gameplay itself is reasonably decent, and is certainly more than acceptable. However, meticulous users with an eye for detail will spot the sudden jitters and skipped frames while gaming on the Galaxy A5, and although the jitters are not majorly disruptive of the overall gameplay, it does hamper the experience.

When it comes to network performance, the Galaxy A5 retains 4G connectivity steadily, and is as good as you can hope for. There were no unprecedented drops in terms of network stability, for both data and WiFi. Calling works well too, although in a number of instances, my voice did not go through after I made a call. This could have multiple causes, and may have also been because of momentary network drops, and is not recurrent enough to be singled out as a network performance issue.

The integrated speaker in the Galaxy A5 is rather weak, and the solitary grille to the left produces audio in low volume. It is also placed at a rather odd position, and is the only square peg in the overall well-rounded engineering.

    Benchmarks

    Camera
Both the front and rear cameras of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) use 16-megapixel image sensors with f/1.9 lenses. Talking about the rear camera first, the Galaxy A5 uses an unspecified sensor that produces decent photographs. The rear camera produces good details in photographs along with good colours, albeit with an added touch of vibrancy and contrast. The colours are also oversaturated, leaving you with lesser room for post-processing it. However, colour tones are deep, and dynamic range is quite good.

The overall sharpness of photographs shot by the Galaxy A5 is quite good, and it also does well in terms of finer details. Sharp edges contribute to well-defined details, and the added colour saturation makes photographs really pop. The only loose end here is the Galaxy A5’s inability to efficiently adjust the light in a frame. In photographs with a strong light source and shadow areas, the Galaxy A5 tends to brighten the overall frame to provide ample light to the darker regions, thereby clipping large parts of the highlights. This will lead to clipped backgrounds and bleached details, and alternatively, you get excessively dimmed shadows that tend to lose details as the brighter areas retain definition.

One good element of the Galaxy A5 is that it does not struggle with noise, and the image noise reduction algorithms control grains fairly well. This tends to produce softer photographs in low light, but in exchange for the slightly compromised sharpness, you get cleaner photographs. The trade-off is worth it, as even the softening of details is not really aggressive.

The 16-megapixel front camera is rather impressive, and can take on most selfie-centric smartphones in the market today. The camera produces reasonably decent details, along with appreciable facial textures. Colour tones are close to source, which is also quite good. The beautify mode adds customisable settings that include filters for skin tone, ‘slim face’ and ‘large eyes’. You can quite literally make your face look more chiseled to impress others on the Internet, and even get larger eyes, if that is your thing. Adjusting skin tones removes blemishes to varying extent, along with removing skin textures. Many do prefer this, and each of these modes work as intended.

The camera app itself suffers from the touch response issue that the rest of the Galaxy A5 does too. Focusing is slower than many other smartphones in comparison, which can lead to blurry photographs if you are shooting a fast-moving object. The Galaxy A5 can only record Full HD videos capped at 30fps, wherein other similar smartphones can record in Ultra HD. The overall video quality is still quite decent, but video bloggers and enthusiasts may find this slightly restrictive.

    Battery life
The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is powered by a 3000mAh battery that does get the job done, but does not offer extensive battery stamina. PCMark battery scores relay 6 hours 36 minutes of battery life, which translates to a little more than 13 hours of usage time. Our typical usage covered an hour and 30 minutes of calling, cumulative social media and internet browsing time of over three hours, an hour and 30 minutes of music playback, 45 minutes of GPS-enabled navigation, an hour of video streaming via YouTube and 30 minutes of gaming, apart from the standard array of SMS messaging and emails. This is not very intensive usage per se, and reflects the average duration of usage that most will put their phones through.

Essentially, if you start the day at 9am with 100% charge, you will almost certainly need to plug it in charge by 10pm at the end of the day, unless you mostly make calls and view/browse messages and emails, in which case the Galaxy A5 lasts for a little more than 18 hours. Hence, while the Galaxy A5 will cover your entire day’s usage, you will need to charge it at the end of the day.

    Bottomline

Cardi B files for divorce from Offset weeks after insisting 'there's a lot of love'

Cardi B files for divorce from Offset weeks after insisting 'there's a lot of love'

A report has claimed that Cardi's decision to divorce Offset came after she found that he had been unfaithful yet again.

Cardi B stuck with Offset even after he was involved in a cheating scandal, but she has finally called it quits by filing for divorce.

Cardi B filed for divorce from Migos' Offset, her husband of three years, at an Atlanta courthouse in Georgia on Tuesday. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the "WAP" rapper is seeking primary physical custody as well as legal custody of their two-year-old daughter, Kulture.

The 27-year-old, legal name Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, has also sought that Offset pay child support, her legal expenses and that there be "an equitable division of all marital assets." The documents also mentioned that the duo is currently separated and that "there are no prospects for a reconciliation."

Cardi B secretly married the "Clout" rapper in September 2017 and didn't make it public until June 2018. Offset proposed to an apparently surprised Cardi at the Philly Powerhouse concert in October 2017, but it later turned out that they had already been legally married for over a month at the time of their engagement. The couple welcomed their daughter, Kulture, a month after announcing their nuptials.

The couple went through a rough patch in their marriage that same year when Cardi accused her husband of cheating with two bartending sisters at a strip club in Queens, New York, and was subsequently charged with assault by the bartenders. The case is still pending in Queens Supreme Court. Offset confessed the infidelity on his part and even crashed his wife's performance at the Rolling Loud festival to beg for forgiveness, a gesture which was described as toxic masculinity by many. The couple had almost separated, but Cardi eventually took him back.

Cardi has spoken about her marriage several times since then, defending her decision to reconcile with Offset even after the cheating scandal. In an interview with Vogue in January this year, Cardi said: "When me and my husband got into our issues—you know, he cheated and everything—and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me. But it's real-life sh*t. People that be in marriages for years, when they say till death do us part, they not talking about little arguments like if you leave the fridge open."

"I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it's really us against the world," the rapper-actress said, adding that monogamy continues to be the only way in her life. She also took to Instagram in December last year to defend Offset after he was accused of sending a flirty message to his former fling.

In fact, the divorce filing comes just weeks after Cardi insisted that "there's a lot of love" between her and her husband. In an interview with Elle last month, the rapper said: "I do know that my relationship has a lot of drama and everything. But there's a lot of love, there's a lot of passion, there's a lot of trust, there's a big friendship. It's always us against the world."

Meanwhile, a report in People magazine has claimed that Cardi's decision to divorce Offset came after she found that the 28-year-old had been unfaithful yet again. A source told the outlet: "Offset has pretty much cheated the entire time (they've been together), but Cardi looked the other way because of the baby. She also didn't want to be embarrassed. But she's had enough."

Coronavirus tests: Bolton NHS Trust plea as 100 turn up at A&E

image captionTest centres in Bolton have seen long queues as people try to get tested
More than 100 people turned up at an A&E asking for Covid-19 tests, sparking a plea from a hospital trust for anyone who is not seriously ill to stay away.
Bolton NHS Trust said dozens of people went to Royal Bolton Hospital because they could not get into test centres.
Chairwoman Prof Donna Hall said it showed a "lack of a cohesive strategy" in the government's "failing" approach.
The government said NHS Test and Trace was "working" but was also dealing with people without symptoms taking tests
Bolton has the highest infection rate in England with 196 cases per 100,000 people recorded on Saturday.
The total number of cases rose from 401 on 5 September to 564 a week later.

image captionThe government said people who were not eligible were requesting tests
The trust's medical director Dr Francis Andrews said people should only go to hospital if they are "extremely unwell or referred by your GP".
"We are extremely busy in our emergency department as a result of this increase," he said.
"Only attend this department if you have experienced a life-threatening accident or illness and need urgent medical attention."
Prof Hall said the situation now was different to March when they had extra staff drafted in and were not expected to continue with planned operations.
"This failure of the test-and-trace system is placing huge pressure on the NHS and social care," she said.
"We had 100 people in our accident and emergency unit.
"We've now got 30 people who are Covid-positive and we've got five people in our high-dependency unit so this virus is not going away.
"I've felt that there has been a real lack of a cohesive strategy for the whole containment of Covid-19 and for test and trace."
Lancashire's director of public health said the system was at "breaking point" and was "compromising our ability to stop the transmission".
Dr Sakthi Karunanithi said it was "beyond frustrating", adding: "The issue is lab capacity.
"We have our own community testing sites and were doing about 200 tests a day - [on Tuesday] we did 1,639 tests. We can't go on like this."
Bolton Council said a test centre had been due to open on Saturday at the Last Drop Village Hotel in response to the growing number of cases but was delayed when "an external business" failed to turn up.
A spokesman said although the delay had been "out of our hands", the authority was "working with the government and their partners to find out what has happened".
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said NHS Test and Trace was "working", adding the system was "processing a million tests a week, but we are seeing significant demand for tests, including from people who do not have symptoms and are not otherwise eligible".
He said anyone with an appointment would not be turned away, and new booking slots and home testing kits were being made available daily.

Biden Appeals To Critical Latino Voters On Florida Campaign Swing

Democrat Joe Biden on Tuesday made his first campaign visit of the year to Florida, where opinion polls show a tight race against President Donald Trump amid signs of lagging support for Biden among the battleground state's crucial Hispanic voters.

TAMPA, Florida: Democrat Joe Biden on Tuesday made his first campaign visit of the year to Florida, where opinion polls show a tight race against President Donald Trump amid signs of lagging support for Biden among the battleground state’s crucial Hispanic voters.

With less than 50 days until the Nov. 3 election, the Biden campaign is trying to overcome concerns about enthusiasm among Florida Latinos and a disinformation campaign that has tried to paint the moderate Democratic nominee as a socialist.

A NBC News/Marist opinion poll showed the two White House contenders in a dead heat in Florida and Trump with a 4-point edge over Biden among the state’s Latinos. Democrat Hillary Clinton won their votes by 27 percentage points in 2016, according to exit polls. Other polls have shown Biden leading among state Hispanics but still trailing Clinton’s support.

Trump won Florida over Clinton by just 1.2 percentage points, which helped propel him to the White House. His inroads with Florida Hispanics have been fueled by his strength with conservative Cuban-Americans, a Republican-leaning bloc he has courted throughout his presidency.

“Clearly, there has been some hemorrhaging of Hispanic support going on, mainly Cuban-Americans,” said Democratic state Senator Annette Taddeo, a Colombian-American. “The Republicans have worked really, really hard, and they have been constantly present.”

The steady drumbeat of Republican attacks on Biden, the vice president under Barack Obama, falsely labeling him a socialist has also taken a toll, Florida Democrats said.

Florida’s Republican lieutenant governor, Jeanette Núñez, a daughter of Cuban immigrants, said Biden’s agenda contradicted the values of “faith, family and freedom” held by Hispanic voters.

“He is completely in the pocket of the radical left – those people who look fondly at the socialist dictatorships in Cuba, Venezuela and elsewhere,” Núñez told reporters on a call arranged by the Trump campaign on Tuesday.

Felice Gorordo, a Cuban-American Biden ally, said the campaign should focus on younger Cuban voters, who do not see foreign policy as the No. 1 issue, making them more open to the campaign’s central message on recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

Some Florida Democrats said they had noticed a sharp rise in videos and commentary in social media and texts repeating falsehoods about Biden and pushing other conspiracy theories about Democrats.

“We are seeing a massive disinformation campaign in Spanish aimed at our community calling Biden and Democrats socialists, and it is having an effect,” said Evelyn Perez-Verdia, a Colombian-American Democratic strategist in south Florida.

Asked by a Reuters reporter as he boarded a flight to Florida how he would handle disinformation campaigns targeting Latino voters, Biden said he would “Just tell the truth.”

“Everybody knows who Trump is. People are going to show up and vote,” Biden said.

    LINCHPIN

Florida, where Hispanics make up about 20% of the state electorate, is a linchpin in Trump’s re-election strategy. A Biden win of Florida’s 29 electoral votes would sharply reduce Trump’s chances of another term – no Republican has won the presidency without Florida since Calvin Coolidge in 1924.

Trump, a former New York businessman, changed his permanent residence to Florida last year.

Nationally, Hispanics make up the largest minority voting group, at more than 13% of eligible voters. Biden’s support with Latino voters across the country has dropped; they favored him over Trump by 9 points in August, down from 30 points in July, according to Reuters/Ipsos data.

The Biden campaign, urged by Taddeo and other Democrats to do more to court Latinos, has stepped up Spanish-language and bilingual advertising and hired more staff.

Ahead of events on Tuesday in Tampa and Kissimmee, two Florida cities with heavy Puerto Rican populations, Biden said: “I am going to work like the devil to make sure I turn every Latino and Hispanic vote.”

As part of his trip Biden is expected to sit for an interview with Telemundo, a Spanish-language network.

He will get some help from former Democratic primary rival Michael Bloomberg, who will spend $100 million on Biden’s behalf in Florida, with a particular focus on Latino voters.

Polls show Biden running ahead of Clinton’s level of 2016 support among seniors in Florida, another crucial voting bloc, and among white voters, giving him plenty of pathways to reach a majority, Democrats said.

They said there was plenty of opportunity for Biden to make up ground with Florida Hispanics, particularly among the state’s non-Cuban Latinos who include a fast-growing Puerto Rican population and Mexicans, Colombians and Venezuelans.

Biden has vowed to rescind many of the hardline immigration policies put in place by Trump’s administration, and has emphasized the need for broad health and economic strategies to recover from the novel coronavirus pandemic that has hit Latino communities particularly hard.

Unite the Country, a Democratic group that supports Biden, is spending $1.4 million on digital advertising aimed at Latinos in south Florida. Steve Schale, the group’s chief executive, said the group could be most effective by increasing support of non-Cuban Hispanic voters who are not attached to a party and are typically more persuadable.

Applied DNA Sciences plans to initiate clinical trial of one of its five LineaDNA vaccine candidates for veterinary use to prevent coronavirus infections in domestic cats, the diagnostic test maker said on Wednesday.

The trials will be conducted in collaboration with biotechnology firm Evvivax S.R.L. on receiving approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Applied DNA said in a statement.

The study will evaluate domestic feline immune response, safety and tolerability of the vaccine candidate and determine evidence of antibody and T-cell response in them.

The trial intends to enroll 30 healthy domestic felines and follow them for six months.

Earlier in July, Applied DNA said five of its LineaDNA vaccine candidates showed strong antibody responses at low doses in mice studies.

        • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 11:21 AM IST

Urmila Matondkar is the latest celebrity to have slammed Kangana Ranaut for her comments criticising Mumbai. The Rangeela star has countered Kangana's remarks on Mumbai and the alleged drug menace in Bollywood, by asking her to look at her home state first.

Urmila said that if Kangana wants to start a war against drug abuse, she should begin with her home state, Himachal Pradesh. "The entire country is facing the menace of drugs. Does she (Kangana) know Himachal is the origin of drugs? She should start from her own state," Urmila told Mumbai Tak.

She also said that if Kangana knew about the drug menace in Bollywood, she should have informed the police. She asked, "Why did this person who has been given Y-security from the taxpayers' money didn’t give information about the drug nexus to the police?"

The 46-year-old actress said she wouldn't tolerate Kangana's defamatory comments on Mumbai. Urmila said, "There's no of doubt that Mumbai belongs to everyone. Whoever has loved the city and has given back to the city, it belongs to them As a daughter of the city, I will never tolerate any defamatory remark against it. When you make such comments you are not only insulting the city, but people of the state at large," she said.

Kangana had compared Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir inher comments with relation to , which had triggered a spat between her and Maharashtra's ruling party Shiv Sena.

Urmila, who contested the 2019 elections from Mumbai North constituency on a Congress ticket, also said that just because one person shouts all the time, doesn't mean the person is speaking the truth. She also criticised Kangana for cribbing all the time and playing the victim card and the woman card.

The United States on Tuesday blacklisted a Chinese developer of a port, airport and resort complex in Cambodia, saying it was built on land seized from local people and there were "credible reports" it could be used to host Chinese military assets.

        • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 8:12 AM IST

WASHINGTON/PHNOM PENH: The United States on Tuesday blacklisted a Chinese developer of a port, airport and resort complex in Cambodia, saying it was built on land seized from local people and there were “credible reports” it could be used to host Chinese military assets.

Union Development Group Co. Ltd is building the huge Dara Sakor complex in a national park on the Cambodian coast, with a runway capable of taking some of the world’s biggest planes.

The Chinese real-estate development company describes it as the largest regional development project in China’s global Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.

The company and the Cambodian government have repeatedly denied Western media reports that the project has military aims.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said there were “credible reports” that Dara Sakor “could be used to host (Chinese) military assets.”

“If so, (this) would go against Cambodia’s constitution and could threaten Indo-Pacific stability, possibly impacting Cambodia’s sovereignty and the security of our allies,” he added in a statement.

The U.S. Treasury Department described the company as a Chinese state-owned entity, and said it had at one point falsely registered as Cambodian-owned to get land for the project.

Projects funded by the firm had “forced Cambodians from their land and devastated the environment, hurting the livelihoods of local communities,” it said.

Union Development Group was not immediately available for comment. Cambodian government representatives and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The company is registered in Cambodia as a private limited company, with its chairman listed as Li Tao. Its website says Union Group was formerly known as Tianjin Wanlong Group, a Chinese real estate developer.

        REGIONAL TENSION

Southeast Asia has become one front of growing tensions between the United States and China, with the rivals at odds over Beijing’s territorial claims in the South China Sea and upstream damming of the Mekong River.

The U.S. Treasury Department statement cited Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan as having said Dara Sakor could be converted to host military assets.

It did not say when he said this. In a 2019 Bloomberg News article, Phay Siphan said: “Dara Sakor is civilian – there is no base at all. … It could be converted, yes, but you could convert anything.”

Cambodia’s government has repeatedly said the country will not serve as a base for any foreign army. It has become one of China’s closest regional allies in recent years.

The U.S. sanctions were imposed under the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. government to target human rights violators worldwide by freezing assets and prohibiting Americans from doing business with them.

“A permanent (Chinese) military presence in Cambodia could threaten regional stability and undermine the prospects for the peaceful settlement of disputes, the promotion of maritime safety and security, and the freedom of navigation and overflight,” the U.S. Treasury statement said.

The Belt and Road initiative is China’s flagship campaign to build infrastructure across Asia, linking it to Europe. Work began on the Dara Sakor project in 2008 after Cambodia leased 45,000 hectares (111,200 acres) in a national park to the Chinese company for 99 years.

The company said it planned to invest $3.8 billion, building a resort with residential areas, businesses and industry. The airport would be operational by the end of this year, UDG board chairman Li told Cambodian media last month.

        Verdict

The Karbonn Sparkle V is definitely a good buy if you want a sturdy smartphone at a small budget. If you like to keep your smartphone updated then your best bet is an Android One handset. However there are many other smartphones in the range which offer similar specs and better performance capabilities, thus for now there isn't anything unique or any strong differentiating factor when it comes to Android One. A slightly lower price could've made a huge difference and made the smartphone much more desirable.

        Karbonn Sparkle V detailed review

Android One is finally out and the first three smartphones look similar and offer the same set of specifications. This will not only allow Android to penetrate deeper into tier-2 and tier-3 markets, it will boost the sales of Indian smartphone OEMs. We take a look at the smartphone offering from Karbonn which is the Sparkle V, priced at Rs. 6,399

        SPECIFICATIONS

-Display: 4.5 inch IPS display with 854x480 resolution (218ppi)
        -Battery: 1700mAh
-Storage: 4GB, expandable via microSD card
-Camera: 5MP rear with LED flash, 2MP front
        -SoC: Mediatek MT6582
        -CPU: 1.3GHz quad-core
        -GPU: Mali-400

        -Operating system: Android 4.4.4
        -Connectivity: 3G, W-Fi, Bluetooth, Dual-SIM

        BUILD AND DESIGN

Since Google is directly supporting OEMs by providing the latest software updates, their main concern now is to focus on the hardware and also the final finishing of the device. The Karbonn Sparkle V looks pretty good and takes a lot of inspiration from the Nexus 5, thus having a flat profile. The smartphone is all plastic with the back having a rubberized matte finish. The front has a 4.5-inch IPS panel display with a resolution of 854x480 pixels which offers vibrant colours and a respectable amount of brightness. The touchscreen response is excellent and we didn’t face any issues. The bezels are however wide and the handset could've been much better if Karbonn had trimmed them down a bit.

Above the display we can see the front facing 2MP camera, a bunch of sensors, a notification LED, and the earpiece which again reminds us of the Nexus 5 with a round perforated design. The microUSB is at the bottom, the 3.5mm audio jack on the top, and the power/lock key along with the volume rocker keys are on the right. The back has the 5MP camera with an LED flash and the whole module is raised from the main body. The back also has the Karbonn and Android One branding along with the loudspeaker. The back panel comes off to reveal the battery, two microSIM card slots and a microSD card slot.

The Sparkle V does very well in the design department considering it costs only Rs.6,399. It certainly doesn’t feel inexpensive in the hand, rather it is one of the most well made devices from Karbonn in the sub-7k segment. It isn’t one of the slimmest smartphones, but it definitely fits well in the hand and doesn’t feel bulky. We have checked out the other two Android One smartphones (Micromax and Spice) as well and technically they look very similar and are fitted with exactly the same hardware.

        UI AND PERFORMANCE

For the ones who have been asking about Android One, let us tell you that it isn't a new version of Android. It is basically a project where Google has tied up with device makers to provide them the latest software updates for low budget smartphones. Google has also confirmed that as soon as the next version (Android L) is released, all the Nexus devices and Android One devices will be the first ones to get the new update.

The Karbonn Sparkle V runs on the latest version currently available on most of the Android devices which is version 4.4.4. The UI is stock and exactly like one would see on a Nexus device. The only addition to it was some custom wallpapers from Karbonn. You get all the Google based apps as well as the updated version of Newstand which comes with new Indian based content. Karbonn has gone ahead and has also included apps like Snapdeal, Moneycontrol, OLX, etc. The UI feels very smooth and it seems that Google has done a god job in providing a bug-free experience on the handset. It is actually more fluid than other Karbonn smartphones that we have tried in the past.

The smartphone handles games very well and surprisingly we saw a smooth performance when we played Asphalt 8 and Injustice: Gods Among Us on the smartphone. We thought that the MediaTek SoC wouldn't be able to provide enough power but apparently it has been optimized well. Yes, there are heating issues but nothing out of proportion.

One major concern is the internal memory which is just 4GB out of which you only get 2.27GB. The camera app doesnt let you shoot pictures until you have microSD card, so if you are planning to buy this device, make sure you expand the memory. Another issue was the loudspeaker, we thought that it is a bit low on volume and at times we even missed some calls because we couldn't hear the ringtone.

The Sparkle V feels quite capable of handling multitasking and we managed to open about 10-12 apps at the same time without having any issues. However, the handset heats up when you run a number of apps, especially graphics intensive.

        Here are the benchmark results:

        CAMERA

There is a 5MP camera at the back with an LED flash which is capable of shooting 1080p videos. Thankfully auto-focus is available which means you wont be left with blurry pictures. The camera isn't extraordinary but gets the job done. Pictures taken indoors are soft and a bit grainy. Outdoors the pictures come out quite good although the camera struggles at times with correct exposure so it's better to manually adjust it.

The same exposure issue can be seen while making videos, also the audio quality on videos is not up to the mark.

Here are some pictures taken with the camera, click on images to enlarge:

Compared to other smartphones in this category, the Sparkle V has a pretty decent camera. The only thing that bugged us was the fact that the camera app will not let you shoot pictures until you have a memory card.

        CONLUSION

Android One seems like a good way to provide the Nexus experience at an affordable price. If you are looking for a feature rich smartphone, then the Sparkle V will not impress you. Yes there are smartphones with much better hardware and performance capability, but this handset is very stable and with full support from Google, it isn’t a bad option at all.

One can also go for the Moto E, the Asus Zenfone 4 or the Xiaomi Redmi 1S which fall in the same price bracket.

Survey Finds Trump’s Popularity Increasing Among Indian-American Voters

Trump’s popularity among Indian-American voters has increased from 16% in 2016 to 28% in 2020. However, 66% of Indian-Americans still favour Biden over Trump, while 6% are undecided.

US President Donald Trump has made inroads into the Indian-American vote bank, according to a survey report released recently.

The survey by Indiaspora and Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Data on Tuesday showed that Trump, seeking re-election, is making a big dent into the Indian-American vote bank despite the fact that Biden has a strong relationship with the community and has played a key role in bilateral ties over the past few decades. Biden also nominated Senator Kamala Harris, as his running mate last month. Harris is the first candidate of Jamaican-Indian origin to run for the post.

Notably in the 2016 presidential election, 77 percent voted for former US Secretary Hillary Clinton, and 16 percent voted for Trump. In 2012, as many as 84 percent of Indian-Americans voted for Barack Obama.

Dr Karthick Ramakrishnan, professor of public policy and political science at University of California, Riverside and founder of AAPI Data, said that the Indian-Americans’ support to Trump, might reach the 30 percent mark if Trump is able to woo the undecided voters.

“Indian-Americans are positioned to make a difference in several swing states that may be close in this election, such as Florida (87,000), Pennsylvania (61,000), Georgia (57,000), Michigan (45,000) and North Carolina (36,000) and perhaps even Texas which has 160,000 Indian-American voters,” said Ramakrishnan.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, said that every vote in the swing states will make a huge difference. “Democrats absolutely should be concerned about making sure that they conduct sufficient outreach to the Indian-Americans," Krishnamoorthi added.

While the support for Biden has dropped as compared to what Clinton received in 2016, the support of the Indian-American for the Republican Party has also dropped from 19 percent to 16 percent in these four years.

“Given the Indian diaspora’s increasing political importance in the US, it’s no surprise they are being courted by both sides of the aisle,” said MR Rangaswami, founder of Indiaspora. “It’s great that both major political parties have begun to realise just how critical it is to reach out to Indian-Americans – our impact is only going to increase over time,” he added.

Milan Vaishnav, director, South Asia Programme, at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said, “Trump’s campaign has made a lot of efforts, to reach out to Indian-Americans, including putting together a nice video advertisement featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Howdy Modi event in Houston last November, showing the camaraderie between the President of the United States and Prime Minister of India.”

Describing Trump as a polarising factor, Representative Niraj Antani from the Ohio State Assembly said that there are a lot of reasons for this swing of votes. “The President's outreach to the community, him going to India and sharing a platform with Modi and his neutrality on issues like Citizenship Amendment Act, abrogation of Article 370, as opposed to Vice President Biden's opposition has polarised the community,” Atani said.

Currently, there are 1.8 million Indian-Americans in the US who are eligible to vote.

TT documentary I Don't Call It Ghetto, Mortenol from Guadeloupe and Malpaso from the Dominican Republic were among the winners of the TT Film Festival 2020 awards.

The winners were announced on Monday night during the festival's virtual awards.

FILMCO's interim executive director Mariel Brown said the awards would normally be held in the Central Bank Auditorium or another venue but due to covid19 the festival has been mostly online.

"And what has been so great about that has meant that we have had so many of the filmmakers whose works were in competition plus jury members join us on the awards tonight. And that is a real treat."

She congratulated those continuing to make films during these difficult times.

"Covid19 has taxed our creativity and our determination and our tenacity. And it's wonderful to be able to continue to celebrate Caribbean films and Caribbean filmmakers."

The award for Best Documentary Medium Length went to I Don't Call It A Ghetto directed by Miguel Galofré, a TT-based filmmaker from Barcelona.

"The jury notes it is not often that we are given such intimate access to the everyday lives of today's police officers. But in I Don’t Call It Ghetto Miquel Galofré takes us into the daily struggles and triumphs of police officer Onika James-Turner, creating a unique and detailed portrait of her life as a working mother, girlfriend, daughter, and neighbour. By the end of the film we know, Onika James-Turner, because she is us.”

The documentary also won Best TT Film.

TTFF founder Dr Bruce Paddington presented Best Narrative Film Short to Mortenol by Julien Silloray from Guadeloupe.

A scene from the film Mortenol. -

"The jury noted it was a fresh and humane take on revenge and coming of age in Guadeloupe. Brilliantly cast with a stand-out performance from a new exciting talent Chris Baltimore."

Mortenol also won Best Film As Decided By The Youth Jury and jury convenor BC Pires said it was a unanimous decision.

He quoted the citation from the jury: "For its technical proficiency and cohesive display of its themes of youthful male elation and loss in the realest depiction of a boy who must reckon with an environment that teaches toxic behaviour."

Best Narrative Feature Length Award went to Malpaso directed by Héctor M Valdez from the Dominican Republic. The jury noted that Malpaso is "a striking border fable that is clearly directed and visually stunning."

A scene from the film Malpaso. -

The award for Best Student Film went to La Pieza de Casseus (The Raging Dance of Casseus) directed by Camilo Mejía from the Dominican Republic. The jury said they all found it to be a compelling and relevant story with a very rhythmic, creative and natural approach.

"It was the most cohesive in terms of direction, editing, performances, sound, production design, production and emotional impact. We journeyed with Casseus in real and imagined realms and it is a journey we would like to see continue."

Best New Media Work went to Centella (Firefly) by Claudia Claremi from Cuba and Best Documentary Film Short went to Unbroken directed by Gabrielle Blackwood from Jamaica.

"The jury notes there are audience expectations with any film genre and with stories related to sports emotion, passion and adversity are par for the course. So it is always exciting to have a gem of a film unfold before your eyes that transcends genre and creates new expectations. Gabrielle Blackwood's Unbroken succeeds in doing all of this while telling an inspiring story. A story that's told with beauty both with the on-screen cinematography and the character's inner spirit."

Blackwood in her acceptance speech expressed thanks to TTFF and the members of the jury.

"I'm really surprised that we won but I am also very thankful."

She also thanked her team and said Laron Williamson, the Jamaican amputee who is the subject of the film, the "real star of the show" will appreciate it as well.

Best Narrative Film Medium Length went to Zeen? directed by Calyx Passailaigue from Canada. The jury notes that Zeen? is a zippy and witty mockumentary about race.

A scene from the mockumentary film Zeen? -

Passailaigue said he was shocked but totally happy to receive the award.

Best Documentary Feature Length Award went to Servidão (Servitude) directed by Renato Barbieri from Brazil.

The jury notes: “All the docs in this category had something strong to offer. It made for a truly difficult decision. Ultimately, the doc that moved us most is told in a conventional but stirring way and took us by surprise with the power of its story. We hope the award amplifies its cause to highlight the story of slavery and eradicate its modern form, low pay labour, in Brazil as well as the rest of the world. From labourers to the activists – and the labour/activists – they compelled us to hear them. We hope you listen too. We congratulate Renato Barbieri for making the case, and this important film."

The film beat out the Brian Lara documentary 501 Not Out which premièred at the festival.

Odisha FC has agreed terms with English defender Steven Taylor for a one-year deal with an option to extend for a second year, ahead of the seventh edition of the Indian Super League (ISL).

Making his senior club debut with high-profile English club Newcastle United in the 2003-04 football season, the 34-year-old centre-back played for more than a decade in the Premier League, becoming a Toon darling in the process before making a move to American professional club Portland Timbers in 2016.

The London-born footballer had also represented England B and other English clubs Wycombe Wanderers FC, Ipswich Town FC and Peterborough United FC and played age-group tournaments for England's U-16, U-17, U-20 and U-21 teams.

Before joining the Bhubaneswar-based ISL team, Taylor was the captain of New Zealand's Wellington Phoenix FC which competes in the Australian A-League.

"I am extremely delighted to join Odisha FC and am hopeful that my experience and leadership qualities will be helpful for the team. I am very happy to be working under Stuart once again and can't wait to meet all the young Indian lads.

"I hope I can help the lads push on and in turn egg the team on towards the playfoff spots. I am looking forward to creating something special at Odisha, make no mistake about it," Taylor said.

        Verdict

The Poco F1 has flagship hardware under the hood, but mid-range everything else. The camera, build and design and the display can’t keep up with the more expensive flagships of 2018. However, if a no-nonsense performer is what you’re looking for on a budget, look no further. Know this that the software right now is riddled with bugs and the camera can’t hold a candle to say the Galaxy S9 or even the OnePlus 6. You do get a sturdy build that should last long, and perhaps the longest battery life on a Snapdragon 845-powered smartphone. At Rs 20,999 though, it can’t get any better.

        Pocophone F1 256GB detailed review

The high-end smartphone market is ripe for disruption. Counterpoint Research’s report on smartphone trends this quarter observed that consumers are now maturing and willing to spend more for better features in their smartphones. As a result, OnePlus toppled Samsung and Apple to be on top of the premium market with 40 percent share. It’s miles ahead of the stalwarts in that segment, relying on the back of a strong community and a legacy of offering supreme value for money. Word of mouth and stickiness to the brand also ensured OnePlus was the go-to choice for someone for whom flagship performance is a priority. For Xiaomi to take on the brand in its own backyard, it had to come to up with something disruptive. Behold! The Poco F1. It’s the cheapest Snapdragon 845-powered smartphone out there right now, starting just Rs 20,999. The new sub-brand was launched to allow Xiaomi the leeway to experiment. Yes, the F1 does come across as an experiment considering the set of features its offers (and ones it doesn’t), but more importantly, creating a new sub-brand now allows the company to shed its baggage of being the number 1 in the Indian smartphone market and start from scratch.

The Poco F1’s focus is primarily on speed. And with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, speed is more or less guaranteed. But along with speed, people also demand a good enough camera and a design they can show off. The rivals Poco compared the phone with on stage at the launch, the OnePlus 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, have more or less all the elements of a flagship phone. A stunning glass design, an immersive display, reliable and consistent camera, and most importantly, a strong community of followers. The high-end hardware-touting Poco F1 definitely has the price in its favour, but is that enough for it to convince buyers to forget the stalwarts and go for this? Let’s find out.

        Design and build

The Poco F1’s design is interesting. Instead of going for glass (which is brittle) or metal (which is common), it went for polycarbonate, or dense plastic for short. While that might make design connoisseurs cringe, it’s perfectly durable. Glass is brittle and tends to crack, while metal attracts scratches and dents. Even the frame is made of polycarbonate. The unit we received for review is the Armoured Edition that uses kevlar instead of plastic, but only on the back. It gives a nice texture to the body adding to the grip. It’s non-slippery as well but is prone to smudges and tend to retain dirt. The frame and the front are the same as other variants. There is a tiny spot right below the Poco logo on the back, that just stands out as odd. Poco says it’s a beauty spot, and most likely, it is an anomaly in the industrial design, but nothing that comes in the way of use. You get the option of red, blue and black colour variants. The design of the Poco F1 is pragmatic. It’s logical and for the target audience it’s aimed, it makes perfect sense. Thanks to a new sub-brand, Xiaomi was able to do things it couldn’t have done with the Redmi and the Mi lineup of phones otherwise. The use of polycarbonate is one. Imagine a high-end Mi phone with a plastic body when it already has a reputation of using materials like ceramic.

Having said that, the Poco F1 looks a lot like Xiaomi’s Mi 8 from the front, which in turn looks like the iPhone X, notch included. It’s a design choice we’ve come to accept in smartphones in 2018. The Poco F1’s notch is wide even for today’s standards. That’s because it houses a dedicated IR blaster along with the front camera to help face unlock work under low light conditions. Well, face unlock does work swiftly. Blazing fast almost and the IR blaster allows the phone to scan your face even before you turn on your phone at night. Interestingly, the Poco F1 isn’t using the notch to cut down on the bezels around the screen. The bottom chin is significantly big, and even the side bezels are relatively thick.

The phone has the typical rounded corners that are found in most Xiaomi phones. It’s quite compact as well, even though it’s not the slimmest phone by a mile thanks to the 4,000mAh battery it packs inside. The display is slightly raised from the body, and if I have to nitpick, that could be a weakpoint in the design. If the phone falls and lands on the edge, the display will be the most exposed. Otherwise, it’s still one of the more durable phones with a flagship processor, apart from the LG G7 ThinQ. Quite expectedly,  there is no waterproofing, but Poco claims there is a water resistant coating on the body that repels water to a minimal extent. Water damage is not covered under warranty though I would suggest being careful around pools with this phone.

The Poco F1 is well built and can withstand wear and tear more than your average glass-back phones.

        Display

The Poco F1 touts a 6.18-inch panel with a big, wide notch and hearty bezels all around. It’s an IPS LCD panel of FullHD+ resolution with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density is effectively 403 ppi which is on the lower side, when you compare it against flagships that have QHD displays and AMOLED panels. The display is perhaps the weakest part of the package. It’s just about functional. The panel is sufficiently bright to get the job done when indoors and outside under direct sunlight, colours tend to get washed out a bit, but not illegible. We got a reading of 389 lux in our display test. Compared to the OnePlus 6 or the Honor 10, which have really bright panels, this isn’t all that great.

Colour reproduction is more or less average, similar to what you would get on a mid-range phone. It’s not super saturated and vibrant, but just about functional. Xiaomi claims to have a contrast ratio of 1500:1 which is decent. The blacks aren’t that saturated though and if you choose to hide the notch, it’s easily visible even when you’re watching a video. YouTube and Netflix videos automatically adapt to the new aspect ratio, which is essentially leaving big black bars along the sides.

Xiaomi offers options to turn on the night mode (automatically), adjust the contrast and colour temperature, and the text size. You don’t have the option to switch colour gamuts like you can in the OnePlus 6. For someone looking for a colour accurate display, the Poco F1 is not for them. Which is how Xiaomi aka Poco has managed to bring down the price. The display comes off as one on a mid-range phone and not a high-end. High-end panels are costly and this is one way of cutting down on the bill of materials.

        Performance

As of publishing this review, the popular benchmarking apps were locked down to prevent scores from leaking on the internet. We will update the review with benchmark scores once they are available.

The focus of the Poco F1 is solely on speed, a clear indication of who it wants to compete with. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset is aided by a vapour-chamber cooling mechanism that Poco claims help in sustained peak performance. This is part of the phone’s tall claims of better real-life performance over other flagship phones and for the most part, it is fast. Whether it’s faster than the rest is something we, as reviewers, were prevented from testing. Some of the benchmark apps were locked down by Poco at the time of publishing this review, so we don’t have objective numbers to share with you claiming whether this is fast. I’d be inclined to give the Poco F1 the benefit of doubt considering there’s a dedicated cooling contraption in it, coupled with 8GB of RAM LPDD4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage in the unit we received for review.

Only AnTuTu worked and on that, the Poco F1 got the score of 265754, which is some 2000 points higher than OnePlus 6’s 244517. It’s literally the only objective number we had to compare the performance of the two devices.

In real-life, the Poco F1 is sufficiently fast, as you would expect from a phone powered by the Snapdragon 845. There are no apps currently to really stress out the chipset and any claims of sustained peak performance cannot really be measured. Even popular heavy-graphics titles like PubG Mobile don’t use full resources of the chipset for long, so it’s next to impossible to put Poco’s claim of having sustained peak performance to claim. You have to take their word for it.

        Gaming performance

We did play PubG Mobile on both the OnePlus 6 and the Poco F1 to test the thermals. After 30 minutes of gaming, the Poco F1 registered external temperature of around 41.2 degrees (a climb from 34.9) while the OnePlus 6 registered 43.3 degrees (a rise from 32.9), indicating that the Poco F1 is thermally more stable as there was a rise of just 6 degrees as compared to 10 degrees in the case of OnePlus.

The Poco F1 also consumed more battery, of around 640mAh while the OnePlus 6 consumed around 594mAh after 30 minutes of gaming. It could be that the AMOLED panel on the OnePlus 6 is more power-efficient, hence the lower battery usage.

For those wondering about other real-life scenarios, the F1 is quite capable at handling tasks like editing photos, playing videos, switching between apps and generally power using the phone.

We are testing the performance of both the phones (and some other similarly priced phones) for an in-depth comparison which will be out by next week. Hopefully by then the benchmarks will be unlocked and we can have a clearer picture of the phone’s performance.

        Software

Good performance requires two a key ingredients; a good operating system that is written to get the most out of the hardware package. A user will spend most amount of time with the UI and that’s one place where the speed can be felt in real time. The Poco F1 runs on a customised version of MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo 8.1. Poco’s choice of UI as compared to Xiaomi’s MIUI, is more attuned towards stock Android fans. It’s called the Poco launcher and Xiaomi will make it available for everyone to download off the Google Playstore on  August 29th. The customisations are aimed at speeding up the experience using the phone, and you can actually feel how fast it is. The notification shade comes down quicker. The swipes and flicks are registered quicker. But the biggest offering for any enthusiast is perhaps the inclusion of the app drawer. On the 256GB variant of the phone, you’re bound to install a whole lot of apps and having an app drawer makes all your apps much more organised and accessible without cluttering the home screen. The app drawer is also categorised into different categories and you can sort apps by colours. The Poco launcher also supports custom icon packs, although it doesn’t have a theme engine of its own like MIUI.

Poco claimed at the launch there are some deep-system optimisations made to the software to make it the ‘master of speed’. In on-stage vidoes, it showed the UI is faster than the OnePlus 6 to open apps and even remember and prioritise the launch of important apps. Poco apparently has a dedicated memory channel that is used to fast-track app launches. The list of optimisation includes dynamic resource allocation, core congestion control, cache management, real-time defragmentation and more. These are optimisations that have given OnePlus’ OxygenOS a good name, and now, Poco is following a similar route.

However, the software itself is still a work in progress. Certain elements are riddled with bugs and there are instability issues. The notification icons don’t show up in the status bar and every time the phone pinged, I had to drag down the shade to see the notification. Furthermore, the volume buttons stopped working midway and I had to restart the phone to get them working again. Instagram crashed a few times while benchmark apps refused to run.

It’s not that the UI isn’t fast. Apps do launch and load within few milliseconds and carrier aggregration does work on the Poco F1. I managed to get around 8Mbps on my Jio SIM on the Poco F1 as compared to 5Mbps on the OnePlus 6. The phone supports Dual 4G standby as well as Dual VoLTE. Poco promises an update to MIUI 10 within a few weeks along with quarterly security updates and a promised upgrade to Android 9 Pie by Q4 2018.

        Camera

While the Poco F1’s focus is on speed, people are paying more these days not just for higher performance, but also for a better camera. The F1 promises a lot in the camera department, but does it all work as advertised? The F1 packs a dual camera unit at the back — A 12MP IMX 363 sensor with a lens of f/1.8 aperture and a pixel pitch of 1.4um. This is coupled with a 5MP sensor that is only used to capture depth information. Up front is a 20MP sensor that relies on pixel binning to deliver clearer photos with more details with lesser noise under low light. It’s the same setup you find on the company’s flagship Mi 8 and Poco claims it used the Mi 8’s algorithms to optimise the F1’s camera. There’s also a healthy dose of AI. Using Snapdragon 845’s AI Engine, the camera can recognise 206 scenes across 25 categories. The AI icon changes to the scene recognition if the mode is working. The software essentially tunes the camera parameters based on what you’re shooting. These are the results:

        Daylight

The Poco F1 is quite capable of taking good daylight shots. The camera can quickly recognise what you’re shooting and the filters it applies generally increase the contrast and saturation to make the photo more palatable. Even without the AI mode on, the photo comes out decently exposed with sharp, rich details.

        AI Mode off

        AI Mode On

While exposing for the dawn breaking, the details in the shadows are lost to a higher degree than usual. The HDR mode kicks in automatically, and in this case, it wasn’t much of help. However, the orange glow of the rising sun does look pleasing, as does the gradient of orange to blue in the sky.

However, as the photo above will tell you, the Poco F1 is quite at reproducing solid colours. The black and yellow cab of Bombay roads came out perfectly saturated and actually looks pleasing. So is the BANDRA art installation on the road. It’s at a distance (taken from a speeding auto), but pixel peeping will tell you the details are well-preserved. Overall, daylight performance is certainly quite impressive.

        Indoors

From the samples above, the Poco F1 is clearly adept at taking good shots indoors as well, provided the lighting is optimal. Straight lines are preserved with commendable sharpness and exposure and dynamic range is optimal. However, since there is no stablisation while shooting photos, one needs to have steady hands. Otherwise, you will get results like this:

        Lowlight

A smartphone’s lowlight photo capabilities ultimately become the decider considering performance and other hardware are now more or less saturated. There are few smartphones that are good at taking low-light shots. The Google Pixel 2 is of course the category leader, followed by the Galaxy flagships. All of them are quite expensive as compared to the Poco F1. However, at the launch, Poco claimed the camera can take good low-light shots.

Well, this is what we got:

        AI Mode Off

        AI Mode On

The first sample had the AI mode turned off. The camera actually took some time to focus and shoot, but there was significant loss in details. The light sources (even the ones that are nearer) are not in focus. The surface of the buildings are softened, while the shadow regions are lacking in details. With the AI mode on, the photo did come out a little brighter, but it also brought also a lot more noise. The AI did manage to recover some details from the shadow regions, but the lights are similarly out of focus.

Even when taking photos of closer objects under low-light, there are some visible softening in place. The exposure isn’t all that bad though and the first sample is adequately saturated with vibrant colours. The noise does creep in the area around the sky. In the second sample, the red rods of the tower is once again softened. In reality, they were much more shiny. The complex straight lines are well-captured though.

        Portraits

This is a mode that works well, as promised. Xiaomi’s bokeh algorithms are known to be good at churning out consistent bokeh shots. In this case too, bokehs work well enough. It’s not very aggressive and the edges don’t lose out on the details while blurring. In fact, the area under focus is well reproduced as well.

        Battery

Completing the package is a 4,000mAh battery. It’s in fact the only phone with Snapdragon 845 with that big a battery right now. Poco promised over a day’s worth of usage from the F1. As mentioned before, the benchmark apps are under lockdown and we couldn’t perform our battery test to objectively test the battery life.

In real-life though, upon using the phone as a daily driver for a few days, it’s easy to see Poco’s claims standing tall. The 4,000mAh battery lasted easily around a day of heavy usage with ample use of the camera, mobile data, social media browsing, watching Netflix and more. It seems to live up to the promise of a long battery life and that is good news for speed junkies who don’t always have a plug point nearby.

        Bottomline

The Poco F1 is an interesting device. It’s a good attempt at being a flagship phone under the hood. The chipset, RAM and storage are all at par with the most powerful Android device right now. However, certain trade-offs and compromises keep the F1 from becoming the true flagship killer. Corners were cut in the design. There’s no waterproofing. The Gorilla Glass on top of the panel is an outdated Gorilla Glass 3. The display has a lot of bezels around it and isn’t the best in the game. The software too isn’t perfect and some bugs still need to be ironed out. It’s promise of speed stands tall mostly, but since we were abstained from performing benchmarks, a definitive verdict is missing. Thermal performance is definitely better which should impress mobile gamers, and so is the real-world performance of the phone.

However, a flagship phone, by definition, embodies the best a company has to offer. If this is indeed the best Poco can do, it leaves a lot to be desired. The F1 is certainly value for money for those who simply demand speed, both on paper and in real-life. But anyone asking for anything more - A better camera, premium design and regular updates will have to look elsewhere. It is certainly the cheapest phone with a flagship processor, but standing in 2018, a flagship processor does not make it a flagship device.

Keeping those constraints in mind, the Poco F1 is a flagship-level performer in a mid-range offering. Everything except the raw performance is mid-range. For Rs 29,999, you also get the Asus Zenfone 5z while happens to run the same flagship chipset, offer a more premium design and has a lot of baked-in AI capabilities along with offering an impressive camera. The OnePlus 6 (the top variant of which retails for Rs 44,999) has a better camera and an active community of users and developers have made the OnePlus 6 the enthusiast’s phone of choice.

If you need to upgrade from the Redmi Note 5 Pro to a more powerful device, the base variant of the Poco F1 does make a lot of sense. Otherwise, if you can afford the more expensive OnePlus 6, Asus Zenfone 5z or even the LG G7 ThinQ (which is even better), you’ll be better off with an overall better experience.
