Press release

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (“URW”), the premier global developer and operator of Flagship destinations, announces a €9.0+ Bn “RESET” plan to strengthen its balance sheet and increase financial flexibility to execute its long-term strategy, and provides update on footfall, tenant sales and rent collection

Key highlights of the “RESET” plan and its five strategic priorities are:

This plan is designed to enable the Group to preserve the Group’s strong investment grade credit rating, with an expected rating of  A-(3) / Baa1(4), and maintain a sustainable capital structure with an LTV(5) below 40% and net debt / EBITDA(6) below 9x.

Commenting on the announcement, Christophe Cuvillier, Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “URW’s immediate priority, as announced on July 29, is to deleverage, primarily through asset disposals. However, given the uncertainties around the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recovery, we have decided, as a matter of prudent management, to substantially strengthen our balance sheet, in order to maintain a robust investment grade credit rating and to ensure flexibility in a world that is unpredictable and requires agility. Our €9+ Bn “RESET” plan is designed to allow URW to fully embrace the changing retail environment through our Flagship destination strategy and capitalise on our unmatched portfolio quality’s mixed-use potential. On the operational front, we see continued improvement in footfall and tenant sales, and are making steady progress in our tenant negotiations. As the environment remains challenging, we believe today’s announcement, including the fully underwritten capital raise, is an important step to ensure URW is best positioned for the future.”

€3.5 Bn fully underwritten capital raise

The Supervisory Boards of URW have today authorised the principle of a €3.5 Bn capital raise, which, in conjunction with the other strategic initiatives, is designed to bolster the financial profile of the Group and best position URW to execute on its long-term strategy, while:

The proceeds of the capital raise would be used to immediately reduce leverage. Pro forma for the capital raise, LTV would decrease to 35.7%(8) from 41.5% as at June 2020. Pro forma for both the capital raise and the full €4 Bn disposal programme, LTV would stand at 30.9%(9). The capital raise will provide the Group with more headroom under its bank covenants should its retail asset values fall significantly, which the Group doesn’t expect given the superior quality of its portfolio.

The capital raise is subject to approval by URW’s shareholders and is expected to maintain existing shareholders’ subscription rights unless otherwise proposed to the Extraordinary General Meeting (“EGM”) of URW SE, to be convened, and expected to be held in Q4 2020. A notice for this EGM is expected to be published separately in due time.

Upon approval of the capital raise by the EGM, and subject to market conditions and necessary regulatory approvals being received, final terms and conditions, including the subscription price, are expected to be determined and announced in Q4 2020, and the transaction to close by year-end. The prospectus to be issued by URW in connection with the capital raise will be subject to the visa of the the French Autorité des marchés financiers (the “AMF”) and the approval of the Dutch Autoriteit Financiële Markten (the “AFM”).

URW has entered into a standby underwriting commitment with BofA Securities, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Goldman Sachs International, J.P. Morgan and Société Générale, acting as Joint Global Coordinators, pursuant to which they have undertaken to fully underwrite the €3.5 Bn capital raise, subject to the satisfaction of customary conditions precedent. Eastdil Secured, Kempen, Lazard and Rothschild & Co are acting as independent advisers to the Group.

Update on operational KPIs
URW has reopened all of it shopping centres globally, though indoor operations in five centres in Los Angeles County continue to be suspended (which represent 4% of the shopping centre portfolio by value).

Footfall and sales
The footfall recovery is encouraging, with most Continental European regions as of now trending in the range of 80 – 90% of last year’s footfall, demonstrating the appeal of URW’s Flagship destinations. While the UK is in the 60 – 70% range, it shows good week-on-week development as people are returning to offices following the lockdown and summer holidays. Footfall in the US centres lags behind that in Europe, as, for a number of shopping centres in Los Angeles, indoor operations remain restricted. In addition, mobility in the major US cities in which the Group’s shopping centres operate is well below that of most Continental European cities.

Tenant sales in Continental Europe were -26% in June, -16% in July, and -12% in August(10), showing a more rapid recovery than footfall, as the last shopping centres reopened during June, most remaining restrictions were lifted, and higher conversion rates and average baskets were recorded. In Europe, tenant sales were -33% and -21% in June and July, respectively, and -16% in August(10).

In France (representing 27% of URW’s retail portfolio), the preliminary August figures show tenant sales are -5%, a strong improvement from -29% in June and -15% in July, with 44% of French tenants reporting August sales above 2019.

Lease negotiation and rent collection
The tenant negotiations, which started after the reopening of centres, are making solid progress. These negotiations are conducted on a case-by-case basis. They recognise the issues the Group’s tenants faced due to administrative closures or trading restrictions and the need to provide relief, are generally limited to the period of closure and based on the principle of a fair sharing of the burden, and entail concessions by tenants in exchange for such relief. They are not about permanently changing lease structures or changing the basis for rent calculations. As at September 14, the Group estimates it is 61% through the process, up from 25% as at July 24.

The rent collection continues to progress. The July collection rate stands at 72%, up from 50% as at July 24, driven by Continental Europe (81%). Collection for August amounted to 70% (Continental Europe: 81%). Collection is partly driven by the tenant negotiations, as some tenants await the outcome of the negotiations to release rent payments. However, potential rent relief is always linked to payment in full of the outstanding amounts agreed upon. In certain cases where no agreement has been reached, the Group has drawn on security deposits or initiated legal action to enforce lease agreements.

Verdict

The Poco F1 has flagship hardware under the hood, but mid-range everything else. The camera, build and design and the display can’t keep up with the more expensive flagships of 2018. However, if a no-nonsense performer is what you’re looking for on a budget, look no further. Know this that the software right now is riddled with bugs and the camera can’t hold a candle to say the Galaxy S9 or even the OnePlus 6. You do get a sturdy build that should last long, and perhaps the longest battery life on a Snapdragon 845-powered smartphone. At Rs 20,999 though, it can’t get any better.

Pocophone F1 256GB detailed review

The high-end smartphone market is ripe for disruption. Counterpoint Research’s report on smartphone trends this quarter observed that consumers are now maturing and willing to spend more for better features in their smartphones. As a result, OnePlus toppled Samsung and Apple to be on top of the premium market with 40 percent share. It’s miles ahead of the stalwarts in that segment, relying on the back of a strong community and a legacy of offering supreme value for money. Word of mouth and stickiness to the brand also ensured OnePlus was the go-to choice for someone for whom flagship performance is a priority. For Xiaomi to take on the brand in its own backyard, it had to come to up with something disruptive. Behold! The Poco F1. It’s the cheapest Snapdragon 845-powered smartphone out there right now, starting just Rs 20,999. The new sub-brand was launched to allow Xiaomi the leeway to experiment. Yes, the F1 does come across as an experiment considering the set of features its offers (and ones it doesn’t), but more importantly, creating a new sub-brand now allows the company to shed its baggage of being the number 1 in the Indian smartphone market and start from scratch.

The Poco F1’s focus is primarily on speed. And with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, speed is more or less guaranteed. But along with speed, people also demand a good enough camera and a design they can show off. The rivals Poco compared the phone with on stage at the launch, the OnePlus 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, have more or less all the elements of a flagship phone. A stunning glass design, an immersive display, reliable and consistent camera, and most importantly, a strong community of followers. The high-end hardware-touting Poco F1 definitely has the price in its favour, but is that enough for it to convince buyers to forget the stalwarts and go for this? Let’s find out.

Design and build

The Poco F1’s design is interesting. Instead of going for glass (which is brittle) or metal (which is common), it went for polycarbonate, or dense plastic for short. While that might make design connoisseurs cringe, it’s perfectly durable. Glass is brittle and tends to crack, while metal attracts scratches and dents. Even the frame is made of polycarbonate. The unit we received for review is the Armoured Edition that uses kevlar instead of plastic, but only on the back. It gives a nice texture to the body adding to the grip. It’s non-slippery as well but is prone to smudges and tend to retain dirt. The frame and the front are the same as other variants. There is a tiny spot right below the Poco logo on the back, that just stands out as odd. Poco says it’s a beauty spot, and most likely, it is an anomaly in the industrial design, but nothing that comes in the way of use. You get the option of red, blue and black colour variants. The design of the Poco F1 is pragmatic. It’s logical and for the target audience it’s aimed, it makes perfect sense. Thanks to a new sub-brand, Xiaomi was able to do things it couldn’t have done with the Redmi and the Mi lineup of phones otherwise. The use of polycarbonate is one. Imagine a high-end Mi phone with a plastic body when it already has a reputation of using materials like ceramic.

Having said that, the Poco F1 looks a lot like Xiaomi’s Mi 8 from the front, which in turn looks like the iPhone X, notch included. It’s a design choice we’ve come to accept in smartphones in 2018. The Poco F1’s notch is wide even for today’s standards. That’s because it houses a dedicated IR blaster along with the front camera to help face unlock work under low light conditions. Well, face unlock does work swiftly. Blazing fast almost and the IR blaster allows the phone to scan your face even before you turn on your phone at night. Interestingly, the Poco F1 isn’t using the notch to cut down on the bezels around the screen. The bottom chin is significantly big, and even the side bezels are relatively thick.

The phone has the typical rounded corners that are found in most Xiaomi phones. It’s quite compact as well, even though it’s not the slimmest phone by a mile thanks to the 4,000mAh battery it packs inside. The display is slightly raised from the body, and if I have to nitpick, that could be a weakpoint in the design. If the phone falls and lands on the edge, the display will be the most exposed. Otherwise, it’s still one of the more durable phones with a flagship processor, apart from the LG G7 ThinQ. Quite expectedly,  there is no waterproofing, but Poco claims there is a water resistant coating on the body that repels water to a minimal extent. Water damage is not covered under warranty though I would suggest being careful around pools with this phone.

The Poco F1 is well built and can withstand wear and tear more than your average glass-back phones.

Display

The Poco F1 touts a 6.18-inch panel with a big, wide notch and hearty bezels all around. It’s an IPS LCD panel of FullHD+ resolution with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density is effectively 403 ppi which is on the lower side, when you compare it against flagships that have QHD displays and AMOLED panels. The display is perhaps the weakest part of the package. It’s just about functional. The panel is sufficiently bright to get the job done when indoors and outside under direct sunlight, colours tend to get washed out a bit, but not illegible. We got a reading of 389 lux in our display test. Compared to the OnePlus 6 or the Honor 10, which have really bright panels, this isn’t all that great.

Colour reproduction is more or less average, similar to what you would get on a mid-range phone. It’s not super saturated and vibrant, but just about functional. Xiaomi claims to have a contrast ratio of 1500:1 which is decent. The blacks aren’t that saturated though and if you choose to hide the notch, it’s easily visible even when you’re watching a video. YouTube and Netflix videos automatically adapt to the new aspect ratio, which is essentially leaving big black bars along the sides.

Xiaomi offers options to turn on the night mode (automatically), adjust the contrast and colour temperature, and the text size. You don’t have the option to switch colour gamuts like you can in the OnePlus 6. For someone looking for a colour accurate display, the Poco F1 is not for them. Which is how Xiaomi aka Poco has managed to bring down the price. The display comes off as one on a mid-range phone and not a high-end. High-end panels are costly and this is one way of cutting down on the bill of materials.

Performance

As of publishing this review, the popular benchmarking apps were locked down to prevent scores from leaking on the internet. We will update the review with benchmark scores once they are available.

The focus of the Poco F1 is solely on speed, a clear indication of who it wants to compete with. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset is aided by a vapour-chamber cooling mechanism that Poco claims help in sustained peak performance. This is part of the phone’s tall claims of better real-life performance over other flagship phones and for the most part, it is fast. Whether it’s faster than the rest is something we, as reviewers, were prevented from testing. Some of the benchmark apps were locked down by Poco at the time of publishing this review, so we don’t have objective numbers to share with you claiming whether this is fast. I’d be inclined to give the Poco F1 the benefit of doubt considering there’s a dedicated cooling contraption in it, coupled with 8GB of RAM LPDD4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage in the unit we received for review.

Only AnTuTu worked and on that, the Poco F1 got the score of 265754, which is some 2000 points higher than OnePlus 6’s 244517. It’s literally the only objective number we had to compare the performance of the two devices.

In real-life, the Poco F1 is sufficiently fast, as you would expect from a phone powered by the Snapdragon 845. There are no apps currently to really stress out the chipset and any claims of sustained peak performance cannot really be measured. Even popular heavy-graphics titles like PubG Mobile don’t use full resources of the chipset for long, so it’s next to impossible to put Poco’s claim of having sustained peak performance to claim. You have to take their word for it.

Gaming performance

We did play PubG Mobile on both the OnePlus 6 and the Poco F1 to test the thermals. After 30 minutes of gaming, the Poco F1 registered external temperature of around 41.2 degrees (a climb from 34.9) while the OnePlus 6 registered 43.3 degrees (a rise from 32.9), indicating that the Poco F1 is thermally more stable as there was a rise of just 6 degrees as compared to 10 degrees in the case of OnePlus.

The Poco F1 also consumed more battery, of around 640mAh while the OnePlus 6 consumed around 594mAh after 30 minutes of gaming. It could be that the AMOLED panel on the OnePlus 6 is more power-efficient, hence the lower battery usage.

For those wondering about other real-life scenarios, the F1 is quite capable at handling tasks like editing photos, playing videos, switching between apps and generally power using the phone.

We are testing the performance of both the phones (and some other similarly priced phones) for an in-depth comparison which will be out by next week. Hopefully by then the benchmarks will be unlocked and we can have a clearer picture of the phone’s performance.

Software

Good performance requires two a key ingredients; a good operating system that is written to get the most out of the hardware package. A user will spend most amount of time with the UI and that’s one place where the speed can be felt in real time. The Poco F1 runs on a customised version of MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo 8.1. Poco’s choice of UI as compared to Xiaomi’s MIUI, is more attuned towards stock Android fans. It’s called the Poco launcher and Xiaomi will make it available for everyone to download off the Google Playstore on  August 29th. The customisations are aimed at speeding up the experience using the phone, and you can actually feel how fast it is. The notification shade comes down quicker. The swipes and flicks are registered quicker. But the biggest offering for any enthusiast is perhaps the inclusion of the app drawer. On the 256GB variant of the phone, you’re bound to install a whole lot of apps and having an app drawer makes all your apps much more organised and accessible without cluttering the home screen. The app drawer is also categorised into different categories and you can sort apps by colours. The Poco launcher also supports custom icon packs, although it doesn’t have a theme engine of its own like MIUI.

Poco claimed at the launch there are some deep-system optimisations made to the software to make it the ‘master of speed’. In on-stage vidoes, it showed the UI is faster than the OnePlus 6 to open apps and even remember and prioritise the launch of important apps. Poco apparently has a dedicated memory channel that is used to fast-track app launches. The list of optimisation includes dynamic resource allocation, core congestion control, cache management, real-time defragmentation and more. These are optimisations that have given OnePlus’ OxygenOS a good name, and now, Poco is following a similar route.

However, the software itself is still a work in progress. Certain elements are riddled with bugs and there are instability issues. The notification icons don’t show up in the status bar and every time the phone pinged, I had to drag down the shade to see the notification. Furthermore, the volume buttons stopped working midway and I had to restart the phone to get them working again. Instagram crashed a few times while benchmark apps refused to run.

It’s not that the UI isn’t fast. Apps do launch and load within few milliseconds and carrier aggregration does work on the Poco F1. I managed to get around 8Mbps on my Jio SIM on the Poco F1 as compared to 5Mbps on the OnePlus 6. The phone supports Dual 4G standby as well as Dual VoLTE. Poco promises an update to MIUI 10 within a few weeks along with quarterly security updates and a promised upgrade to Android 9 Pie by Q4 2018.

Camera

While the Poco F1’s focus is on speed, people are paying more these days not just for higher performance, but also for a better camera. The F1 promises a lot in the camera department, but does it all work as advertised? The F1 packs a dual camera unit at the back — A 12MP IMX 363 sensor with a lens of f/1.8 aperture and a pixel pitch of 1.4um. This is coupled with a 5MP sensor that is only used to capture depth information. Up front is a 20MP sensor that relies on pixel binning to deliver clearer photos with more details with lesser noise under low light. It’s the same setup you find on the company’s flagship Mi 8 and Poco claims it used the Mi 8’s algorithms to optimise the F1’s camera. There’s also a healthy dose of AI. Using Snapdragon 845’s AI Engine, the camera can recognise 206 scenes across 25 categories. The AI icon changes to the scene recognition if the mode is working. The software essentially tunes the camera parameters based on what you’re shooting. These are the results:

Daylight

The Poco F1 is quite capable of taking good daylight shots. The camera can quickly recognise what you’re shooting and the filters it applies generally increase the contrast and saturation to make the photo more palatable. Even without the AI mode on, the photo comes out decently exposed with sharp, rich details.

AI Mode off

AI Mode On

While exposing for the dawn breaking, the details in the shadows are lost to a higher degree than usual. The HDR mode kicks in automatically, and in this case, it wasn’t much of help. However, the orange glow of the rising sun does look pleasing, as does the gradient of orange to blue in the sky.

However, as the photo above will tell you, the Poco F1 is quite at reproducing solid colours. The black and yellow cab of Bombay roads came out perfectly saturated and actually looks pleasing. So is the BANDRA art installation on the road. It’s at a distance (taken from a speeding auto), but pixel peeping will tell you the details are well-preserved. Overall, daylight performance is certainly quite impressive.

Indoors

From the samples above, the Poco F1 is clearly adept at taking good shots indoors as well, provided the lighting is optimal. Straight lines are preserved with commendable sharpness and exposure and dynamic range is optimal. However, since there is no stablisation while shooting photos, one needs to have steady hands. Otherwise, you will get results like this:

Lowlight

A smartphone’s lowlight photo capabilities ultimately become the decider considering performance and other hardware are now more or less saturated. There are few smartphones that are good at taking low-light shots. The Google Pixel 2 is of course the category leader, followed by the Galaxy flagships. All of them are quite expensive as compared to the Poco F1. However, at the launch, Poco claimed the camera can take good low-light shots.

Well, this is what we got:

AI Mode Off

AI Mode On

The first sample had the AI mode turned off. The camera actually took some time to focus and shoot, but there was significant loss in details. The light sources (even the ones that are nearer) are not in focus. The surface of the buildings are softened, while the shadow regions are lacking in details. With the AI mode on, the photo did come out a little brighter, but it also brought also a lot more noise. The AI did manage to recover some details from the shadow regions, but the lights are similarly out of focus.

Even when taking photos of closer objects under low-light, there are some visible softening in place. The exposure isn’t all that bad though and the first sample is adequately saturated with vibrant colours. The noise does creep in the area around the sky. In the second sample, the red rods of the tower is once again softened. In reality, they were much more shiny. The complex straight lines are well-captured though.

Portraits

This is a mode that works well, as promised. Xiaomi’s bokeh algorithms are known to be good at churning out consistent bokeh shots. In this case too, bokehs work well enough. It’s not very aggressive and the edges don’t lose out on the details while blurring. In fact, the area under focus is well reproduced as well.

Battery

Completing the package is a 4,000mAh battery. It’s in fact the only phone with Snapdragon 845 with that big a battery right now. Poco promised over a day’s worth of usage from the F1. As mentioned before, the benchmark apps are under lockdown and we couldn’t perform our battery test to objectively test the battery life.

In real-life though, upon using the phone as a daily driver for a few days, it’s easy to see Poco’s claims standing tall. The 4,000mAh battery lasted easily around a day of heavy usage with ample use of the camera, mobile data, social media browsing, watching Netflix and more. It seems to live up to the promise of a long battery life and that is good news for speed junkies who don’t always have a plug point nearby.

Bottomline

The Poco F1 is an interesting device. It’s a good attempt at being a flagship phone under the hood. The chipset, RAM and storage are all at par with the most powerful Android device right now. However, certain trade-offs and compromises keep the F1 from becoming the true flagship killer. Corners were cut in the design. There’s no waterproofing. The Gorilla Glass on top of the panel is an outdated Gorilla Glass 3. The display has a lot of bezels around it and isn’t the best in the game. The software too isn’t perfect and some bugs still need to be ironed out. It’s promise of speed stands tall mostly, but since we were abstained from performing benchmarks, a definitive verdict is missing. Thermal performance is definitely better which should impress mobile gamers, and so is the real-world performance of the phone.

However, a flagship phone, by definition, embodies the best a company has to offer. If this is indeed the best Poco can do, it leaves a lot to be desired. The F1 is certainly value for money for those who simply demand speed, both on paper and in real-life. But anyone asking for anything more - A better camera, premium design and regular updates will have to look elsewhere. It is certainly the cheapest phone with a flagship processor, but standing in 2018, a flagship processor does not make it a flagship device.

Keeping those constraints in mind, the Poco F1 is a flagship-level performer in a mid-range offering. Everything except the raw performance is mid-range. For Rs 29,999, you also get the Asus Zenfone 5z while happens to run the same flagship chipset, offer a more premium design and has a lot of baked-in AI capabilities along with offering an impressive camera. The OnePlus 6 (the top variant of which retails for Rs 44,999) has a better camera and an active community of users and developers have made the OnePlus 6 the enthusiast’s phone of choice.

If you need to upgrade from the Redmi Note 5 Pro to a more powerful device, the base variant of the Poco F1 does make a lot of sense. Otherwise, if you can afford the more expensive OnePlus 6, Asus Zenfone 5z or even the LG G7 ThinQ (which is even better), you’ll be better off with an overall better experience.

  • It features an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1660 bhp/tonne.

We already know that Lamborghini's next track-only hypercar will be the Essenza SCV12 and plenty of details about it have already surfaced. However, Lamborghini has released a new video on the SCV12 being even more precise about how the model is shaping up. Now Lamborghini has reaffirmed that the Essenza is born for the track and its engineering solutions are derived from racing which we earlier saw in the teaser images Lamborghini shared when the car was undergoing testing.

The Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 features an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1.66 hp / kg.

The Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 is powered by the 6.5-litre V12 engine, making 819 bhp with significant power uplift from the ram effect at high speeds. The exhaust pipes were designed by Capristo to reduce the pressure, improving performance and its exhaust note. The power is channelled to the rear wheels by a new X-trac sequential six-speed gearbox which is integrated as a structural element within the chassis. The Essenza SCV12 features an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1660 bhp/tonne which is achieved using a new-generation carbon fibre monocoque chassis without internal roll-cage. It's also the first GT car developed to adhere to FIA prototype safety rules.

The aerodynamic package gets complete with the colossal adjustable double-profile rear wing.

In a bid to ensure maximum agility and stability on the most demanding tracks, Lamborghini has adopted kinematic suspension solutions inspired by racing prototypes. It includes a push-rod rear suspension installed directly on the gearbox and it is equipped with specific slick Pirelli tires mounted on magnesium rims - 19-inch up front and 20-inch at the rear. The disc brakes and callipers have been developed by Brembo Motorsport. Aerodynamics have been developed by Lamborghini's Squadra Corse GT racing experience to ensure a high level of efficiency and even higher downforce levels than a GT3 car, generating downforce of up to 1,200 kg at 250 kmph. The front hood has a double air intake with a central rib, typical of the Huracan racing cars, which separates the hot airflow coming from the radiator and transports the cold air to the airscoop located on the roof. The front features a splitter and two lateral elements on the sides. The flows for engine and gearbox cooling have been optimised through the use of vertical fins situated on the sides. The aerodynamic package gets complete with the colossal adjustable double-profile rear wing.

The design of the multi-function steering wheel with display was inspired by F1 single-seater steering wheel.

The design of this new-age machine is inspired by the 1970s prototypes and elements, like the hexagonal geometry that characterises the front headlights and the roof airscoop and air vents that frame the steering wheel. The "Y-shaped" elements which are so typical of Lamborghinis are apparent on the design. Lamborghini says that its engineers have tried to bring the best amalgamation of lightweight, functionality and design. In fact, the instrument panel and dashboard are supported by an asymmetrical carbon "Y". The design of the multi-function steering wheel with display was inspired by F1 single-seater steering wheel and it offers the best ergonomics, ensuring the driver does not need to remove his hands from the steering wheel. The FIA homologated OMP seat with carbon shell ensures comfort, safety and stability.

कोरोना वायरस संक्रमण के दौरान प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी द्वारा पीएम केयर्स फंड (Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund)

Kolkata Lawyer Jailed For Life For Killing Husband With Mobile Phone Charger

The court also found Anindita Pal guilty of "causing the disappearance of evidence" (Representational)

Kolkata:

A fast-track court in Bengal's North 24 Paraganas district has sentenced a lawyer to life in prison for killing her husband with the chord of a mobile phone charger.

Additional district and sessions judge Sujit Kumar Jha convicted lawyer Anindita Pal on Monday for her husband's murder, sentencing her to life in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000.

The court also found her guilty of "causing the disappearance of evidence" and sentenced her to one year in prison for that. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the judge ordered.

Special public prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee prayed for the capital punishment, claiming that it was a premeditated murder.

The court, however, sentenced her to life imprisonment since she has a three-year-old child, and also because there are no eyewitnesses and the conviction was based on circumstantial evidence.

As she was being taken to the prison van from the courtroom, Anindita Pal said she was being framed and that she will fight till the "last drop of blood".

During the trial, the prosecution had claimed that on the intervening night of November 24 and 25, 2018, Anindita Pal strangled her husband Rajat Dey, also a lawyer, with the wire of a mobile phone charger in their New Town flat near Kolkata.

The prosecution claimed that the couple had a strained relationship which led to Rajat Dey's murder.

Anindita Pal's lawyer Pinak Mitra claimed that she was sleeping in another room when she heard a sound from her husband's room and found him hanging.

Mr Dey's father had lodged an FIR alleging that Anindita Pal had killed his son and she was arrested on November 29 by the police.

Trial and arguments in the case were completed in March this year.

Both Anindita Pal and her husband were practising law at the Calcutta High Court.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is for someone looking to maximise the smartphone imaging capabilties. In its price range, there are phones that have excellent primary camera. Spend a little more and the Asus Zenfone 5z offers a good enough wide-angle camera, but it's can't take good portrait shots. The Galaxy A7 (2018), on the other hand, seems to offer all three options to the user. You have a 24MP primary camera that works pretty good in the day time and decently enough in low-light. The wide-angle, even though it has a fixed focus, is good enough for the sweeping wide shots in the day. The portrait mode on the phone is also quite consistent and can take portraits that looks much more natural than what the Poco F1 can do. That's what the Galaxy A7 (2018) brings to the table. It offers choice where others don't. Otherwise, it's not as great a performer, neither does it have most durable design and it certainly doesn't have the longest battery life in its price range.

Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 detailed review

The year 2018 marked a tectonic shift in the way Samsung envisioned and marketed its mid-range phones. While the premium flagships, namely the Galaxy S series and the Note series continue to operate in the cutting edge, the mid-rangers have always lived under the looming shadows of them. Not anymore, though. Samsung Mobile’s head DJ Koh had declared that Samsung will bring never-before-seen innovation in phones. Little did we know his version of innovation is simply cramming more cameras on the back of the phone to bolster their chances of toppling the likes of OnePlus and Xiaomi, which have become its primary competition in India. Nevertheless, the Samsung Galaxy A7 arrived sporting not one, not two, but three cameras on the back. What was even more surprising is that the triple-camera setup was the first to arrive in a mid-ranger, instead of the flagship. It wouldn’t have been as surprising if it had been the other way round.

While there’s more to the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) than a triple-camera setup, Samsung’s marketing effort is primarily based around this feature. Naturally, our review focuses more on this aspect to see whether the heavy advertising about the triple-camera setup converts to usefulness. More than that, at a price point of Rs 23,990 and with compelling options like the Poco F1 and the Nokia 7 Plus, does it makes sense to buy the Samsung A7 (2018) instead? Let’s find out!

Design

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018), despite carrying new innovations in the form of a triple-camera setup, borrows a lot from its premium flagship siblings. A glass body and a Super AMOLED Infinity Display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, to be precise. But it’s nowhere as ergonomic as the Galaxy S9. Instead, it retains the wide form factor of the company’s earlier Galaxy C9 Pro with a taller and a slightly larger display, but with the same height. It’s not as curved as the Galaxy S phones which has curved edges and rounded corners to help grip the phone better. This one is table-flat. As a result, it was difficult for my tiny hands to reach the other end of the screen. One-handed use is out of the question and you have to put both hands to use to type out a message.

The shape aside, the Galaxy A7 (2018) feels pretty solid with a sturdy aluminum frame housing the glass body. There’s no flex whatsoever, but the delicate glass body makes me skeptical. Especially since Samsung didn’t mention about any Gorilla Glass protection. The phone does come with a transparent case out of the box, but that can protect the shiny body from scratches and smudges, but still leaves the display vulnerable.

Fingerprint sensor now on the side, embedded in the power button

The Galaxy A7 (2018) is emboldened by Samsung’s decision to avoid the notch though. I’m good with having thin bezels around the screen over having to stare at a notch on a bright and vibrant display. The A7 (2018) also uses a micro-USB port for charging housed in the bottom. It is flanked by the endangered 3.5mm headphone jack and a tiny slit for the speaker. The phone’s left edge has nothing except the SIM card tray while on the right are the volume rockers and the power button with the fingerprint sensor embedded in it.

It’s another departure from the design Samsung had squared into in its flagships. But then, the placement of the fingerprint sensor has always been a controversial affair for the company ever since the Galaxy S8. Embedding it in the power button reduces the effort and it makes it more intuitive. Although coming from the Redmi Note 6 Pro, I kept reaching out to the rear panel out of muscle memory, but quickly got used to it. Even though it’s placed a little higher for me to reach naturally, the slight depression around th button makes it easy to find the button and the fingerprint sensor is quite responsive.

Many might feel the Galaxy A7’s design is a little outdated and for the most part, quite unwieldy, but it does make the phone classy and more expensive looking than what it’s retailing for.

Display

Samsung is the largest supplier of smartphone displays. It even makes money off supplying OLED panels to Apple for the iPhones. The Super AMOLED displays the company makes are one of the best in the market. Naturally, Samsung will be inclined to make use of this advantage in its affordable offerings as a means of differentiation. The Galaxy A7 (2018) is a testament to that. It’s 6-inch Super AMOLED panel with 18:9 aspect ratio is sufficiently bright with a clocked luminescence  of 596 lux. It’s not as bright as the new OnePlus 6T or even the LCD panel on the Huawei Nova 3, but it’s bright enough to be legible outdoors. The colours are also well-balanced. It doesn’t look as saturated as the Huawei and Honor phones, or as washed out as that on the Poco F1, it’s somewhere in the middle. There is a cold bias in the colour temperature that can be changed in the settings.

Bright, vibrant AMOLED panel

Samsung also offers the Always-on display that discretely keeps the screen on while showing the clock and incoming notifications. The lack of notch means there’s no arbitrary cropping in videos or games or even while looking at an image you’ve taken or while reading an article. There’s a night mode that turns on the blue light filter to help you sleep better.

The display is large enough to let you enjoy watching movies and videos on it. It’s also a good screen to read on. Videos on YouTube can be stretched to fill up the screen, else thick letterboxing is present on all sides. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video doesn’t support the new aspect ratio, yet. It’s also Widevine L1 certified which means you stream content from Netflix and Amazon Prime in high definition.

The display is one of the best part about owning this phone. I believe, even more than cameras, it’s this panel that should be the reason to buy this phone.

Performance

Just like in case of the display, the Galaxy A7 (2018) relies on Samsung’s proprietary technology for the performance under the hood. It is powered by Samsung’s own octa-core Exynos 7885 chipset. It’s manufactured on a 14nm manufacturing process and houses two Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6Ghz. Samsung promises a giant 75 percent boost in performance over its predecessor, the Exynos 7880, which is corroborated in our benchmark reports.

On AnTuTu 7.0, the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) scored 121364 against the Poco F1’s 265754. The massive difference in the score is for the fact that the Poco F1 is powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset, the same that powers the Galaxy Note 9 in select markets. With that looming over the Galaxy A7’s head, it’s difficult to recommend the phone if you’re looking for pure performance. On Geekbench Single Core, the Samsung Galaxy A7 scored 1516 while on multi-core test, it scored 3583. Once again, the scores are nowhere close to what the Poco F1 offers. However, if you are looking for parity, the Nokia 7 Plus scored similarly on the single-core test, but on multi-core, the Snapdragon 660 powering the Nokia 7 Plus outscored the Galaxy A7 (2018) indicating the multi-tasking on the Android One phone might be better. On 3DMark Slingshot, the Mali G71-MP2 GPU on the Galaxy A7 scored just 778 against the Nokia 7 Plus’ 2040 and Poco F1’s 4284. As far as graphics rendering is concerned, this isn’t the best phone to do so.

Looking at the benchmark scores, it seems the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) isn’t the most powerful device in its price segment by any means. But as far as real world usage is concerned, the Galaxy A7 (2018) is fairly reliable. There are stutters while launching apps, especially when switching over to another app by double tapping the recent button. The Samsung Experience UI is packed with a whole lot of features and while that’s good for enthusiasts, it also means it will take a hell lot of time for updates to arrive since it takes a long time for beta-testing.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) can handle games like Angry Birds, Asphalt 8: Airborne with ease, but heavy games like PubG Mobile cannot run smoothly. There were noticeable frame drops and even the power consumption was quite high as the battery percentage went down from 64 to 51 in a 15-minute session.

The Galaxy A7 (2018) is purely focused on the camera, it seems, to the point that the performance is ignored. With options like the Poco F1 and the Nokia 7 Plus which are all-rounders in their own way, the Galaxy A7 (2018) didn’t manage to convince me, when it came to performance.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A7 offers a triple camera setup for the budding photographer

Like we mentioned before, the reason for the Galaxy A7 (2018)’s existence is the rear-camera setup on the back of the phone. Samsung has centered all its marketing around this one feature claiming it’s a new way to see the world. That’s partly true since it’s the first time a Rs 23,000 is sporting a wide-angle camera.

For what it’s worth, there really is a lot going on in the phone’s imaging stack. There is a 24-megapixel primary sensor that can bin four pixels into one for better low-light photos. It has an aperture of f/1.7. Then there is an 8MP, 18mm wide sensor with f/2.4 aperture. It doesn’t have auto-focus and focus is set to infinity. Lastly, there is a 5MP depth sensor for semantic image segmentation to enable portrait mode.

You tap on the icon in the middle to switch between lenses

Here’s how the camera performs:

Wide-angle camera

Poor dynamic range means shadows have next to no details

Closeups come out nice though

Lacks sharpness, but manages to get the exposure right

The primary 24MP sensor manages to take some compelling photos in the day time. The photos appear sharp with added saturation in the colours. However, the camera seems to expose for the highlights more. As a result, shadows come out quite dark. The colours are also a little too saturated with a preference for warmer white balance. It does have good reproduction of details. Close-up shots of flowers have the details intact. However, in landscape shots, the edges come out a little blurred. In low light, the primary sensor uses pixel binning to enhance the details. It’s difficult to say whether it’s the wide f/1.7 aperture or the pixel binning that leads to decent low-light images, but it does work. To be frank, though, the Nokia 7 Plus seems to do a better job at taking low-light shots.

Ultra-wide camera

Ultra-wide angle camera comes handy when there's a lot to cram into a frame

What's a straight line?

Generic touristy photo

Clipped highlights, dark shadows, but overall a sharp photo with lot of details

Not always, though

The 8MP ultra-wide camera is the big highlight of the Galaxy A7 (2018). While it does offer a wide 120-degree field of view, the camera is focused at infinity. That’s a bummer considering you cannot change the area of exposure and will have to make do with highlight clipping and low dynamic range in the final JPEG in the day-time. Under ideal circumstances though, it manages to pack a lot more objects in the frame as compared to the regular wide-angle lenses people use. The barrel distortion, however, is more than what we have seen in other wide-angle cameras on phones this year. The Asus Zenfone 5z manages to do a much better job at it while the LG G7+ ThinQ produces even better results. In low-light though, the ultra-wide angle camera is practically useless. A small aperture of f/2.4 with no such thing as pixel binning means there’s very little light falling on the sensor. If at all you have to take the sweeping wide shots, it’s better to do it before sunset.

Portrait Mode

Crisp portrait with consistent, natural background blur

Subject almost perfectly separated from the background

The portrait mode on the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is more convincing though. That’s where the third lens comes in. The portrait mode offers you the ability to adjust the amount of depth you want both while shooting and after. And the blurring, when the slider is somewhere in the middle, is pretty consistent and looks natural.

There’s also the scene optimiser mode that Samsung claims uses machine learning to determine what you’re shooting and adjust the camera parameters accordingly. It’s simply Samsung pandering to the people who have started to like phones by Honor, Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi. The Chinese manufacturers use this feature to market their smartphones, and it seems Samsung wanted a piece of that cake. It doesn’t seem all that useful though, and you’re better off shooting in the normal mode.

There is also a pro-mode but it doesn’t offer a wide suite of options like the ones found in Samsung’s flagships. You can cannot switch between lenses for one and there’s no way to change shutter speeds. You can only play around with an exposure compensation meter, ISO, metering and White Balance. For a phone where the camera is the primary highlight, this might not sit well with the people.

Battery

Why are micro-USB ports still mainstream in 2018?

The Galaxy A7 (2018) packs a 3,300mAh battery under the hood. The capacity might seem less as compared to other offerings in that price range, but thanks to a power-efficient chipset and an AMOLED display, the phone manages to eke out around 6 hour of screen-on time on PC Mark’s Work 2.0 battery test. It should easily convert to a day’s worth of usage. We used the phone to mainly shoot a lot of photos, post on social media and a little bit of gaming and it lasted till around 8 PM in the evening. There is no option to quick charge the phone and it takes well over an hour and a half to top up the battery. While we have seen phones with longer battery life, the Galaxy A7 (2018) isn’t all that bad with its usage. The software seems to be well optimised to save power.

Bottomline

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) may consider itself a standout smartphone in that price-range purely for packing more than two cameras on the back, but there’s more to the phone than a triple-camera setup. It certainly brings on board a whole lot of features borrowed from its flagships, but as far as the performance is considered and how well the features work, it doesn’t live up to the hype. What the phone offers is a choice to the user. While there are phones that can either take good photos using the primary sensor like the Nokia 7 Plus. Or it can take a good enough wide-angle shot, like the Asus Zenfone 5z. Or take good portraits like the Poco F1. The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) offers all three options and for the most part, manages to do it decently enough.
