Verdict

The Honor 4C offers good performance, great camera and a day's worth of battery life. The phone does everything right but rolls over when you factor in the mere 8GB internal storage. Adding in the 9K price tag, the phone falls short of becoming the best in its class.

Huawei Honor 4C detailed review

The budget phone segment is a highly contested segment in the Indian mobile market. And this segment is ruled mostly by Chinese phone manufacturers. While many phones are sitting in a stalemate position at the 7K price mark, Honor has gone ahead and launched the Honor 4C at Rs. 8,999. On paper, the phone does look good with its octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13MP camera. It faces much fiercer competition from Yu Yureka and its older brother Honor 4X. So, Is the Honor 4C up for the task? Let’s find out.

Solid build and tested design
The Honor 4X we tested a few months ago was a good looking phone and offered quite a sturdy build. The Honor 4C follows in the same footsteps. The quality of plastics and the fit and finish of buttons is top notch for the price. The metal camera housing, the patterned back and the sealed-in battery pack, all add up nicely to give the phone a very solid feel in the hand. The design elements are also carried over from the Honor 4X and the phone features that raised power button. However, the speaker has been moved to the back which does muffle the sound when the phone is place on its back.

Nice display and UI
The Honor 4C has a good display but not as good as the one we saw on the Honor 4X. The HD display shows good colour accuracy without any uneven hues. While the colour temperatures are okay at default settings, they can be tweaked to your liking as the phone allows you to choose how much cooler or warmer you want the display to be. The sunlight legibility is also dependable and I had no issues with the display when viewing it under direct sunlight. However, the navigation keys should have been backlit.

The UI is pretty much the same we saw on the Honor 4X as the phone runs EMUI 3.0 which is layered on top of Android 4.4.2 Kitkat. The UI still lacks an app drawer and all apps are put on various home screens. The UI has all the customization features like a theme manager, background notification manager for specific apps, extra security measures for added privacy and more.

Good Performance
The Honor 4C comes with a Kirin 620 SoC inside. This octa-core chip is capable of running 64-bit applications and is a contender in the budget segment against the popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. Navigating through the UI is smooth and opening apps and multitasking takes no time at all. GPU intensive tasks like games work fine as well and I couldn’t find any lags or stutters doing so. After using the phone for a while I felt the Kirin 620 is a fairly faster Soc than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. And the synthetic benchmark results do stack up to tell the same.

Honor 4C | Create infographics

I even compared it with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 powered Yu Yureka and the Kirin 620 gives an impressive chase to that SoC as well. There is one major flaw in the hardware department however and that is the 8GB internal storage. That 8GB internal storage is a very limiting factor and leaves the user with just 3.65GB of usable storage. This means you will have to buy a microSD card to store your multimedia and keep your app count to a minimum. In hindsight, at a 9K price, the phone should have featured 16GB storage.

Call connectivity and reception were good and the phone does a slightly better job on the reception part. However, if you are an audiophile the Honor 4C might not be phone for you. The Honor 4C does improve over the Honor 6 in the sound department but remains merely average.

Great camera and an okay battery
The 13MP rear shooter on the Honor 4C is one of best low light shooters I have seen in a while. Also, photos taken in different light conditions have good colour accuracy and dynamic range. The camera software doesn't even mess with the saturation and I find it a praiseworthy feature since a majority of phone cameras oversaturate images. The camera software also provides advanced settings but they are hidden in menus. The phone can take 1080p videos with decent audio quality and works quite well in low light conditions. The 5MP front-facing camera is equally good and while I am not a fan of the beautify mode, it is there for selfie addicts.

Honor 4C

Underneath the removable cover lives the 2550mAh non-removable battery which in my daily usage with display brightness at auto gave me about a day's worth of usage. The Honor 4C does have a built-in battery manager on-board which does increase the battery by slowing down the processor when the screen is off. In our standard battery test the Honor 4C lasted just over 7 hours which is better than its competitors.

Bottomline
The Honor 4C could have been a very good option if the phone had 16GB of internal storage and a slightly lower price tag. These are the only two major factors which hold back the phone in becoming the best buy in this segment. Everything else like build, performance and camera quality make this phone worth considering. So, at Rs 8,999 should you buy the phone? Well, if you don’t use a lot of apps and are okay popping in a microSD card, this could be the phone for you. And, if you are feeling lucky, the Yu Yureka is a good phone to consider under Rs. 10,000. Otherwise consider from the usual lot of Lenovo A6000 Plus, Redmi 2, Honor 4X or the Motorola Moto G (2nd gen).

I'm 52 this year and am thinking of going back to studying next year. There's an MSc at Edinburgh that I really fancy, but I talked myself out of applying this year. You've made me reconsider. Verdict

For a phone that’s all about the display, it would have been nice for Lenovo to offer a full HD panel on the Phab 2. Even with the added price, the Xiaomi Mi Max makes for a much better buy. Consider the Phab 2 only if you want a phablet that costs less than Rs. 12,000.

Lenovo Phab 2 detailed review

My first ever touch screen phone was the LG KP500 Cookie, and I remember looking at its 3-inch display in wonderment, for how big it was. I have with me right now, the Lenovo Phab 2, whose 6.4-inch display absolutely dwarfs my old Cookie. The Phab 2 is the cheapest of three new phablets launched by Lenovo, and costs pretty much as much as my LG Cookie did at the time.

At Rs. 11,999, the two biggest competitors of the phone are its elder brother, the Phab 2 Plus, and the Xiaomi Mi Max. However, both of these phones are more expensive than the Phab 2. So, does this price difference make it the best phablet to buy? Let’s find out.

Display

While the Lenovo Phab 2 Plus had a 1080p display, the Phab 2 gets a 720p panel. Spread over 6.4-inch, this results in a pixel density of about 230ppi. It isn’t very crisp and some icons appear fuzzy, while text can appear jagged. However, the responsiveness of the screen is good.

Colour reproduction and contrast are average. However, the viewing angles aren't very nice, with noticeable colour shift at slight angles. The phone has a luminance rating of 363 Lux, which is really low, and the display will be percieved as dim. In addition, there's noticeable light leaks around the corners, which affects colour reproduction near the edges. You'll notice this with dark colours. However, sunlight legibility is just enough to work with, but not ideal.

Build and Design

The Lenovo Phab 2 is big, but not what you'd call ugly. It resembles a big rectangle, and features a slightly curved back and chamfered edges. For what you can expect from its size, the Phab 2 actually fits comfortably in one hand. However, the corners aren’t very rounded. So when you hold the phone in landscape mode, they dig into your palm. Also, you will need both hands to operate the phone at most times.

Unlike most other smartphones in this price range, Lenovo has opted to go with a plastic build instead of metal. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s not well built. The Phab 2 is quite sturdy and the physical buttons feel really nice to use. It should also be noted that the Phab 2 does not have a fingerprint scanner.

The phone is quite large and weighs a hefty 227 grams. This is something you might have to consider if you like wearing tight clothing. Also, this is one of the heaviest smartphones you can buy right now, alongside the iPhone 7 Plus, Mi Max and more.

Phones of this size aren’t built to be used with one hand. While there is a one-handed mode in the settings, it only works for the dialer and the lock screen passcode. So you really have no other option, but to use the device with both hands.

Performance

While the Lenovo Phab 2 may be one of the biggest phones you can buy right now, it is not the fastest. The phone quad-core MediaTek MT8735 processor consisting of four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.3Ghz. You also get 3GB of RAM. It is comparatively slow, with slight framing issues while playing performance intensive games, like Injustice or Asphalt 8. Load times for such apps are quite high, though.

Synthetic benchmark tests paint a pretty accurate picture of the MediaTek MT8735, against the likes of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 that's found in the Mi Max. They're not often perfect representation of real world performance, but in this case, the difference is well represented. The phone is especially slow on single core performance, which is perhaps why apps take longer than usual to load.

Camera

The Lenovo Phab 2 does not come with Google Tango like the Phab 2 Pro, nor does it come with dual-rear cameras like in the Phab 2 Plus. What you do get is a single 13MP rear camera with a dual-tone flash. At the front is a 5MP unit.

Images taken with the phone seem consistently dull, regardless of lighting conditions. In daylight, colours seem dull with a hint of undersaturation. Details are low in most conditions, and the phone loses details in shadows, even under well lit conditions, as in outdoors. In low light, the image quality is quite poor with noticeable noise and poor colours, even if you're clicking on lit roads, restaurants etc.

View post on imgur.com

You also do not get a manual mode for taking pictures, a feature the Phab 2 Plus had. However, the AR mode is present, and it lets you put a fairy, dragon, dog or cat in the photo, and interact with it. While this is kinda cute (especially the dog), the novelty wears off really quick. It remains a gimmick at best.

Battery

The phone comes with a 4050mAh battery, just like its elder brother. On our benchmark tests, it performed pretty well with a score of 8 hours and 30 minutes. However, during my 12 hour work day, which consisted of about an hour of music playback, 30 mins of gaming, and some browsing and texting, I had about 55-60 percent battery left. The display was kept at 100% brightness throughout. The phone can last you a day, but that may not be enough for a device this size.

Considering that Xiaomi managed to stuff a 4850mAh battery into the similarly sized Mi Max, I personally can't help but feel Lenovo could have done something similar and added an even bigger battery to the phone. Size of course wouldn't matter, but the Mi Max can also last much longer.

Bottomline

There is very little to like about the Lenovo Phab 2, aside from build quality. For a phone that’s all about the display, it would have been nice for Lenovo to offer a full HD display, instead of a 720p panel. Even with the added price, the Xiaomi Mi Max makes for a much better buy if you are in the market for a phablet. You should consider the Phab 2 only if you are adamant on a phablet and can't spend a penny over Rs. 11,999.

Apple bundles TV, music, news and more in services push

Apple bundles TV, music, news and more in services push

Apple rivals have already introduced 5G models, and China is far ahead of the US when it comes to the new generation networks.

Apple said Tuesday it is putting TV, music, news and more in a subscription bundle as it increases its push into services tied to its iPhone "ecosystem."

An Apple One bundle to be available later this year will start at $15 monthly and include a freshly launched fitness service tied to Apple Watch.

The Silicon Valley titan made no mention of a keenly anticipated iPhone 5G considered vital to the company's fortunes, with analysts expecting that debut next month, due to disruption in production caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The subscription bundle highlights Apple's efforts to put more emphasis on digital content and services amid a sluggish global smartphone market.

The $15 Apple One bundle includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, the Apple Arcade game service and iCloud storage. A $20 family plan can be shared by up to six people.

An upgraded $30 bundle adds Apple Fitness+, Apple News+ and additional cloud storage.

"With Apple One, you can access the best of Apple entertainment across all your favorite devices with one simple subscription," said Apple senior vice president of internet software and services Eddy Cue.

The Fitness+ service introduced by Apple is tied to its smartwatch line-up, which was enhanced with a Watch SE at $279, a price lower than that of its flagship watches.

Apple also unveiled its Series 6 smartwatch, starting at $399, and added new features including monitoring sleep and blood oxygen levels as well as detecting when wearers are washing their hands.

"Hand washing detective recognizes the motion and sound when washing your hands and encourages you to continue for the recommended 20 seconds," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said during a presentation streamed from the company's spaceship campus in Silicon Valley.

Apple touched on the roles its smartwatch, iPad and digital services could play in working or learning remotely and staying healthy as the pandemic continues to disrupt people's lives.

Apple Watch also serves as an anchor to the tech giant's mobile software, since it syncs with the iPhone.

"The key part for Apple is to keep the base of iPhone users and sell them a ton of accessories like AirPods and get services," said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights and Strategy.

Apple also announced its eighth-generation iPad with its A12 Bionic chip starting at $329, and a more powerful iPad Air from $499, powered by the A14 Bionic chip.

"While the focus for the street remains the iPhone 12 5G supercycle set to kick off in early October, the launch of the next generation Apple Watch, iPad Air, and services bundle are key ingredients in Cupertino's recipe for success," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said of the Apple announcements.

5G networks are touted as promising an exponential leap in the amount and speed of wireless data, enabling advances in self-driving vehicles, virtual reality, connected health and more as sensors and servers communicate instantly.

Apple "absolutely needs" a 5G version of its iPhone, according to Techsponential lead analyst Avi Greengart.

"Not for the US, but for China where 5G is driving purchase decisions," Greengart said.

Apple rivals have already introduced 5G models, and China is far ahead of the US when it comes to the new generation networks.

New generation 5G networks have also taken shape in South Korea and in parts of Europe.

Verdict

The OnePlus 7T Pro is indeed one of the fastest smartphones out there right now, but it’s not flawless. The flaws, in fact, are more or less acceptable if OnePlus was still operating in the value flagship segment, but this is a premium smartphone meant to take on the likes of the Galaxy Note 10+ and the Huawei P30 Pro. So it’s natural for us to compare the OnePlus 7T Pro with the best smartphones of this year. And in that regard, the OnePlus 7T Pro lacks a lot of features. Water resistance and wireless charging are two major misses, something that most smartphones priced Rs 60,000 offer. More than that, the phone has a penchant to overheat and has quite a few software bugs that are yet to be corrected.

OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition detailed review

The OnePlus 7 Pro was one of our favourite devices from earlier this year. The phone set a benchmark for other value flagships to follow suit, offering stellar performance, a fantastic display and an innovative design. The OnePlus 7T Pro that came a few months later retains almost all of that, and makes a few cursory changes. That includes the latest Snapdragon 855+, the only major upgrade that was anyway obvious, along with a few new software features. The rest of the package is nearly identical to the OnePlus 7 Pro. So is it really worth your money when the OnePlus 7 Pro is also available at a much cheaper price? Let’s find out —

Performance

Like every OnePlus device, the OnePlus 7T Pro is right at the bleeding edge of mobile computing, at least in the Android space. The Snapdragon 855+, which Qualcomm launched to help gaming phones set themselves apart, powers the flagship. The upgraded SoC offers a higher binned prime core clocked at 2.96GHz along with an overclocked Adreno 640 GPU which Qualcomm claims offers 15 percent better performance. That, combined with 12GB RAM and UFS 3.0 storage (up to 256GB), ensured the benchmark scores are one of the highest we have ever seen. You can see that in the charts below —

As the results show, the OnePlus 7T Pro is far ahead of its competition in the Android space. It even beat the latest iPhones in AnTuTu and 3DMark Slingshot indicating that the CPU and GPU are primed for high performance. Synthetic benchmarks taken into account, the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition is clearly the fastest Android smartphone this year.

More than benchmarks, using the smartphone itself gives the feeling that it’s hands down the fastest smartphone out right now. And that’s primarily because of the 90Hz refresh rate display. We will talk more about the panel later, but the higher refresh rate makes a big difference in the way you experience using the phone. The scrolling is far more responsive for one, and the animations look more realistic. Having said that, you won’t find much use of the 90Hz refresh rate outside of the UI. There are just a bunch of games that can run at 90FPS and most high-end games will be locked to 60 FPS. But looking at the pace mobile gaming is evolving, we might soon see 90FPS gaming on Android, and the OnePlus 7T Pro only becomes future-proof in that regard.

Speaking of gaming, the OnePlus 7T Pro is one mean gaming machine, marred only by the curved display. Games themselves run at their peak frame rates with nearly 100 percent stability, but it takes some time getting used to the curved panel. For one, the controls often tend to take up the curved part unless you manually set it otherwise. And touch response along the curved edges is weaker than the flat areas. And I did miss a few taps while playing CoD: Mobile on the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition. You can see the gaming stats in the charts below —

Clearly, the OnePlus 7T Pro is right at par with the rest of the flagships, at least in terms of performance. There’s a dedicated Fnatic Gaming Mode that enables haptic feedback in select games, blocks calls and notifications and also improve visuals.

But not everything is as good as it seems. The OnePlus 7T Pro, despite sporting the best hardware, doesn’t seem to handle all that firepower well enough. While running the benchmarks, we regularly faced heating issues where the CPU and GPU were running over 50 degrees. The issue comes up even while gaming for long periods, especially when the charger is plugged in. OnePlus also employs aggressive resource management algorithms that often kills apps running in the background. Except for games, which tend to remain loaded, apps like Battery Stat and Facebook Messenger regularly got killed randomly. The overheating could just be a software issue, but despite the phone being out in the market for more than two months, the issue is yet to be resolved. Furthermore, this is an issue that’s primarily restricted to the McLaren Edition. The regular OnePlus 7T Pro with 8GB RAM doesn’t have any such heating issues.

Software

The  OxygenOS UI is also one of the primary reasons why the OnePlus 7T Pro run as fast as it does. It’s one of our favourite custom skins for Android for the way it’s designed as well as its optimised. The OnePlus 7T Pro also runs on Android 10 straight out of the box, one of the only smartphones to do so. But having Android 10 early also led to some unwanted bugs. Many users reported experiencing ghost touch issues, especially along the edges, while some also reported backwards scrolling. Thankfully, OnePlus issues updates regularly (almost twice a month) that should fix them eventually.

OxygenOS also brings a new reading mode, more customisable Zen Mode and Horizon Light, which is nothing but OnePlus’ way of lighting up the edges upon incoming notification. It would have helped if these were persistent pulses instead of a single burst, so that the user is reminded there are unread notifications.

Battery life

The OnePlus 7T Pro relies on a 4085mAh battery which isn’t quite adequate if you keep the display running at QHD resolution and 90Hz refresh rate all the time. Doing so, I barely managed to get 4 hours of screen on time with the phone losing at least 30 percent charge in around 30 minutes. If you are watching a video or playing a game, the drop is even more. Thankfully enough, OnePlus lets you keep the resolution variable automatically pushing to QHD only when it’s required, but even then, the screen on time increases by just an hour or so. Five hours of battery life is certainly not something you’d expect from a premium flagship. On the PCMark Work 2.0 battery test, the OnePlus 7T Pro lagged behind the Galaxy Note 10+, and even the previous OnePlus 7 Pro. Check it out on the graph below —

Camera

Moving on to the camera, the OnePlus 7T Pro retains the camera setup of the OnePlus 7 Pro and makes some software-level upgrades to improve image quality. You get three modes to shoot in — Wide, Ultrawide and telephoto. The ultra-wide lens is also used for macro shots. Also, the telephoto lens, according to OnePlus shoots at 3X lossless zoom, but it’s actually 2.8x optical zoom and the rest is digital. You can also shoot stable videos using a super stable mode that relies on machine learning to stabilise your shots, over and above the stabilisation rendered by OIS and EIS.

Images from the OnePlus 7T Pro are almost identical to the OnePlus 7 Pro’s and while well-lit photos are more or less similar to what you get from more premium flagships like the Huawei P30 Pro and the Galaxy Note 10+. Only, OnePlus uses a very specific tone for its daylight images which sets it apart. It’s not bad, but just looks different. You can see the difference in the samples below —

The first sample is from the Galaxy Note 10+ while the second one is from the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren. Notice how the pinks and the greens are more pronounced on the sample from the 7T Pro? The phone essentially boosts the contrasts to make the image look punchier, which may not sit well with all users.

The 16MP ultra-wide lens comes with autofocus, a welcome addition which is missing in most premium flagships, and it comes with a fast shutter as well. But then, you won’t get as much detail as you would get from the 48MP primary lens. Thankfully, OnePlus extended Nightscape support to the ultra-wide lens, but even then, using the lens after dark won’t give you the best results.

The telephoto lens is used for both portrait shots as well as to zoom in to objects. The zooming in part works well in the day, but a lower f/2.4 aperture means you won’t be able to get the desired results in low light. What’s worse, it also doesn’t work with the Nightscape mode.

Apart from that, the OnePlus 7T Pro can also shoot 4K videos at 60 FPS, but only for 15 minutes, tops. I also faced a lot of focusing issues while shooting videos and while capturing close-up photos. Objects tend to go in and out of focus a lot, making life hell for me while I was shooting a product at a launch event. Here are some of the photos we shot with the phone —

Design and Display

The form factor of the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren is identical to the OnePlus 7 Pro, right down from the dimensions and the weight. Only the rear panel gets a special McLaren flavour, which I personally didn’t like all that much. The glass finish at the back doesn’t retain fingerprints but is quite slippery, so a case is recommended. The only change in the design is that the AF system has now moved to the side of the camera module. Apart from that, there’s the pop-up camera, the curved display and rounded edges, all of which make it quite ergonomic to use and a pleasure to watch videos on. But, I have a few quips with the curved display.

The 6.67-inch QHD+ display curves along the edges rendering a healthy 90 percent screen to body ratio. However, the curved edges are quite annoying and actually becomes a hindrance. For instance, the edges have a glare under the sun, often masking the content on the edges. Indoors, it’s a fantastic display to use. You can watch HDR10+ content on all major streaming sites while the 90Hz refresh rate makes using the panel a whole lot more fun.

Bottomline

The OnePlus 7T Pro is indeed one of the fastest smartphones out there right now, but it’s not flawless. The flaws, in fact, are more or less acceptable if OnePlus was still operating in the value flagship segment, but this is a premium smartphone meant to take on the likes of the Galaxy Note 10+ and the Huawei P30 Pro. So it’s natural for us to compare the OnePlus 7T Pro with the best smartphones of this year. And in that regard, the OnePlus 7T Pro lacks a lot of features. Water resistance and wireless charging are two major misses, something that most smartphones priced at Rs 60,000 offer. More than that, the phone has a penchant to overheat and has quite a few software bugs that are yet to be corrected. As such, if I have to choose, the regular OnePlus 7T offers more bang for the buck and also doesn’t have the pesky issues brought forth by the curved display. Also keep in mind that with the OnePlus 7T Pro coming in, the previous OnePlus 7 Pro is much cheaper, and offers nearly the same experience as that of the OnePlus 7T Pro.

Lawyers allege abuse of migrant women by gynecologist for Georgia ICE detention center

“I was brought up by the American dream that you treat people the way you want to be treated," said a nurse who filed a whistleblower complaint.

WASHINGTON — A nurse who worked at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Irwin County, Georgia and four lawyers representing clients there are claiming that immigrant women are routinely being sent to a gynecologist who has left them bruised and performed unnecessary procedures, including hysterectomies.

The doctor, who three lawyers identified as Dr. Mahendra Amin, practicing in Douglas, Georgia, has continued to see women from the Irwin County Detention Center for the past several years despite complaints from his patients.

Amin was the subject of a Justice Department investigation in 2015 for making false claims to Medicaid and Medicare. As a result, he and other doctors involved paid $525,000 in a civil settlement, according to the Justice Department.

The lawyers identified the doctor after a whistleblower complaint to the Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security was filed by Dawn Wooten, who worked as a nurse inside the facility. She said in the complaint that detainees were not getting Covid-19 tests and other needed medical care. The complaint was first reported by the Intercept.

Wooten worked full time as a licensed practical nurse at the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia, until being demoted in July.

The complaint cites both allegations from unnamed detained immigrants and Wooten.

The facility houses immigrant detainees in the custody of ICE, which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security. It also houses inmates for Irwin County and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Project South, Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights and South Georgia Immigrant Support Network filed the complaint on behalf of detained immigrants at the center and Wooten.

Wooten was demoted in July from a full-time nurse to “as-needed” after missing work because she had coronavirus symptoms. She said she believes the demotion was in retaliation for raising coronavirus protocol concerns, according to the complaint.

She also said that there was not enough active testing of the immigrant detainees for the coronavirus and that the facility was not “reporting all these cases that are positive,” meaning the number of cases at the facility was possibly much higher than that reported by ICE.

Elizabeth Mathren, a lawyer who represented several women who saw Amin through her work with the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she was employed from 2017 to 2019, said she brought their complaints to managers of the detention facility.

"Two to three years ago, I had a face-to-face conversation with (someone in management). I was so disturbed. I begged her to get my client treatment with a different doctor. I told her I had heard from multiple people that he was rough, that they were scared to go to him, that they didn't understand what he was doing," said Elizabeth Mathren, who represented several women through her work with the Southern Poverty Law Center beginning in 2017.

Mathren she had at least one client report bruising after being examined by Amin.

But Mathren said immigrant women have continually been sent to Amin, despite concerns. The facility is privately contracted by LaSalle Corrections.

In a statement, a company spokesperson said, "LaSalle Corrections has a strict zero tolerance policy for any kind of inappropriate behavior in our facilities and takes all allegations of such mistreatment seriously. Our company strongly refutes these allegations and any implications of misconduct at the ICDC."

A woman who answered the phone at Amin’s practice hung up the phone when asked for comment.

Benjamin Osorio, another lawyer representing women in the Irwin County facility, said two of his clients received hysterectomies that they believe may have been unnecessary.

One of the women, who is of child-bearing age, was told she needed to have a hysterectomy after Amin found ovarian cysts, Osorio said. She was advised that they were cancerous, but her records indicate she was not given a biopsy to confirm the cancer, he said. In another case, he said, his client was told she had stage 4 cervical cancer and would need a hysterectomy and chemotherapy. But after her hysterectomy, an oncologist in Charlotte said she did not have cancer, according to Osorio.

Another lawyer, Sarah Owings, said she has heard of many women who are told they have ovarian cysts that need to be removed or drained.

"I don’t think this is necessarily a systemic sterilization by ICE. I think this is the kind of thing that is allowed to flourish in the course of poor oversight and terrible, inhumane conditions of confinement," said Owings.

In her complaint, Wooten said some of her patients told her they were afraid to go to a doctor they called the "uterus collector," according to the complaint.

In an interview with NBC News, Wooten said, "I had a detainee that asked me, she said, 'What is he doing Ms. Wooten, collecting all of our uteruses?' And I just looked at her puzzled because I didn’t have an answer."

"The new shocking revelations about the abuses against women's bodies must lead to the immediate closure of this horrid facility," Azadeh Shahshahani, legal and advocacy director at Project South, said in a statement. "ICE and the private prison corporation must be held accountable."

In a statement responding to Wooten's allegations, a spokesperson for ICE said, "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) does not comment on matters presented to the Office of the Inspector General, which provides independent oversight and accountability within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. ICE takes all allegations seriously and defers to the OIG regarding any potential investigation and/or results. That said, in general, anonymous, unproven allegations, made without any fact-checkable specifics, should be treated with the appropriate skepticism they deserve.”

In response to the lawyers' allegations about medical procedures, Ada Rivera, medical director of the ICE Health Service Corps, said, "All female ICE detainees receive routine, age-appropriate gynecological and obstetrical health care, consistent with recognized community guidelines for women’s health services."

"According to U.S. Immigration and Enforcement (ICE) data, since 2018, only two individuals at Irwin County Detention Center were referred to certified, credentialed medical professionals at gynecological and obstetrical health care facilities for hysterectomies in compliance with National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) standards. Based on their evaluations, these specialists recommended hysterectomies. These recommendations were reviewed by the facility clinical authority and approved."

She added, "Out of respect for the process of matters pending before the OIG, ICE does not comment prematurely on reported allegations, and ICE intends to fully cooperate with any resulting investigation by the OIG."

The agency said it is committed to the safety and welfare of those in its custody and its facilities are subject to regular inspections. The Irwin County Detention Center has repeatedly been found to operate in compliance with ICE’s performance standards, the agency said.

Shredding medical request forms

Wooten alleged in her complaint that men and women at the detention center “overwhelmingly reported not being tested for Covid-19 from March until August 18,” when those in the ICE facility were given the option to be tested.

A woman reported that 100 women slept in a unit where women “coughed, had fever and other discomforts, but officers did not listen to them when they reported their health problems,” and that they were never tested for Covid-19, according to the complaint.

“After demanding that the sick women be taken to the medical unit, she reported that the women were finally taken but were brought back within an hour and just given pain killers,” the complaint said.

Wooten also claimed that it was common practice for a sick call nurse to shred medical request forms from detainees requesting to go to the medical unit and fabricate records such as vital signs without seeing the patient seeking help, the complaint said.

ICE said in its spokesperson's statement that its epidemiologists have been continually tracking the outbreak, regularly updating its infection prevention and control protocols, and issuing guidance to staff for the management of potential exposure among detainees.

ICE said on its website that as of Sept. 13, there were 42 confirmed cases of Covid-19 among its detainees at Irwin County Detention Center, and 5,772 in all of its facilities, with six overall deaths.

In the event that an asymptomatic migrant workers develops symptoms like cough, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, loss of sense of smell or taste or breathlessness, he or she should be referred to a Covid-19 hospital or the Direct Intervention System for Health Awareness (DISHA).

Migrant workers in Kerala who have Covid-19 but are asymptomatic can work in "areas exclusively marked" for them, an order issued by the Kerala government states.

The order was issued on the direction of Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Alkesh Kumar Sharma over delay in completion of infrastructure projects in the state, The News Minute reported.

Additional Chief Secretary of Labour Department Satyajeet Rajan issued the order stating that migrant workers who have tested positive for Covid-19 must be segregated from others, but those asymptomatic may work in specified areas while taking all precautions.

Accommodation for such asymptomatic workers should be in keeping with the guidelines adhered to by Covid-19 First Line Treatment Centres. In the event that an asymptomatic migrant worker develops symptoms like cough, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, loss of sense of smell or taste or breathlessness, he or she should be referred to a Covid-19 hospital or the Direct Intervention System for Health Awareness (DISHA).

According to the order, migrant workers entering Kerala must quarantine at a location chosen by the contractor of the project they work on for 14 days. Workers who arrive in the state without having taken a test must undergo an antigen test on the fifth day from their arrival. The cost of such a test will be borne by the contractor, the order states.

Technical teams, officers and consultants involved in industrial projects in Kerala are also required to adhere to guidelines on quarantine.

Migrant labourers who test negative for Covid-19 may work while following physical distancing and must be confined to the site of their work and their accommodation.

The order holds good also for migrants who are not employed by a contractor. However, it does not state whether the state government will bear the cost of quarantining and testing such workers.

Verdict

The Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition is the company's first laptop to be launched in India and it comes out the door swinging hard. The hardware in this machine allows it to deliver great in-class performance, while also giving 6 hours of battery life on moderate daily usage, a brilliant display for watching movies and getting work done. Where it loses points is with the keyboard which provides a very mushy typing experience,  a trackpad that has too much play and the fact that Xiaomi couldn't pack the webcam into the display, so it has to offer a separate unit, making it easy to lose or forget. Despite the shortcomings, the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition is definitely setting a new bar for the category.

Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition detailed review

If there’s something Xiaomi is good at, its shaking things up real hard in whatever segment it enters. They did this it’s smartphones across various budget and performance ranges and now, they’re finally entering the laptop space. The Mi NoteBook 14 falls at the intersection of mainstream and thing-and-light laptop categories, offering key features from both segments in one laptop. After using the laptop as my primary machine for a few days, here is our Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition review.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Performance

Packing the latest from Intel in the form of their Comet Lake Core i7-10710U paired with 8GB DDDR4 memory (soldered, non-upgradeable), a fast 512GB NVMe drive and the Nvidia GeForce MX 350, the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition really gets the hardware very right. Do note that this is the top-end variant and costs Rs 59,999.

Benchmarking the machine reveals impressive performance. We start off with PCMark 10 and its office-centric benchmark tools, followed by disk speed measurement and of course, the performance of the new Nvidia GeForce MX350. The charts for some of our benchmarks are shown below.

Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Performance Review

Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Performance Review

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Performance Review

What was interesting was to see the performance difference between the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition and the Lenovo ThinkBook 14. The review unit of the latter that we benchmarked runs on an Intel Core i7-10510U, a 4-core, 8-thread chip. The Intel Core i7-10710U is a 6-core, 12 thread part. While the 10510U has a higher base clockspeed of 1.8GHz in comparison to the 1.1GHz of the 10710U, the latter comes with more cache. When looking at the PCMark 8 Work benchmark numbers, the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition comes out significantly farther ahead of the Lenovo counterpart. However, the same kind of workload run through PCMark 10, a more up-to-date metric puts the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition ever so slightly behind the Lenovo. Interestingly, despite the dedicated GPU, most of 3DMark’s benchmarks were not available for use “due to hardware limitations.” We managed to get scores for FireStrike and SkyDiver, with the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition scoring nearly twice as higher scores as compared to the ThinkBook 14. However, on the WinRAR benchmark, the ThinkBook 14 comes out ahead by a hair, being able to process 7753KB/s of data as against the 7284KB/s by the Mi NoteBook 14.

Backing the benchmark performance is the day-to-day performance of the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition. I used the laptop for a week as my daily driver and found that despite having close to 20 tabs open in Firefox at all times, several word files and a few of our scoring sheets open in Excel, the machine would not break a sweat. The signs of struggle only showed when I fired up Adobe Lightroom to run an edit on 50-odd RAW files. Despite the discrete graphics, the machine stuttered between every movement of the adjustment slider. Switching over to photoshop, again editing RAW files one at a time was less than fluid in ACR. With the image loaded in Photoshop, adjusting curves saw occasional stutter as was painting in masks and working with adjustment layers. The Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition is great for day-to-day use, but definitely falls short as an option for creators.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Teardown

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Thermals

The Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition is cooled using a rather simple design. A single fan cools the singular copper pipe that traverses the Intel Core i7-10710U and the Nvidia GerForce MX 350 chip. In normal use, the keyboard area of the laptop doesn’t get hotter than 34 degrees, while the frame just above the function keys can get noticeably hot at around 44 degrees. The heat is exhausted mostly out the left side but even there, we didn’t see the temperatures get uncomfortable. The large cuts on the bottom panel allow the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition to pull in sufficient air to even keep the base relatively cool, with the temps clocking in at 42-degrees at its hottest point.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Thermals

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Thermal Performance

During normal use, however, things are somewhat different. If you were to use this laptop for just simple office and tasks like I did, then the laptop manages to remain fairly cool on both the top and underside. It is only the back 1.5-inches of the base that registers higher temperatures due to the CPU being there, but if you were to use this laptop on your lap, you could position it in such a way that you don’t feel the heat.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Display

The Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition features a 14-inch Full HD IPS display. What makes the Mi NoteBook 14 a “Horizon Edition” machine are the slim bezels. Its definitely a good-looking panel with great viewing angles and good colour reproduction. The panel is also very bright, hitting the 430-lux mark on our lux meter. In real life terms, we were able to use the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition without any strain on our eyes even outdoors. The matte coating on the display definitely works well in suppressing reflections, but don’t expect it to be effective against bright, point sources of light such as the sun, or even a high-wattage bulb. The display hinge is also very well crafted. The display panel has no play and it stays precisely in the position you leave it.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Build and Quality

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Battery

The Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition packs a 48-waatt hour battery and manages to leave us very impressed. On the PCMark 10 battery benchmark, the machine lasted 7 hours and 10 minutes, a very impressive number by itself. I followed up the benchmark tests by using the machine without being plugged in for a few days, and I got about 6 hours of use each time. My usage involved 30-45 minutes of watching Netflix, along with lots of writing and researching, a usual part of the job. As I mentioned before, there were 20+ tabs open in Firefox, and jumped between various MS Office tools. The battery life is definitely a highly scoring aspect of the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Keyboard, Trackpad and Ports

Everything isn’t peaches and gravy with the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition, and it starts to show with the keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard offers 1.3mm of travel and uses scissor switches for a supposed good typing experience. In experience, we get a keyboard which is fairly mushy, with some keys offering inconsistent actuation points. The keys are not firm at all and typing on it doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. I found myself double checking the letters in my document to make sure the keystroke was registered. You could still live with all this, but what we can’t accept is the lack of backlighting on the keyboard. No matter how you look at it, the omission of backlighting is definitely a huge corner to cut and could be a deal breaker for many.

Perhaps the worst offender is the trackpad, which is a single piece of plastic with no separate buttons. The left and right click also have far too much play and by the time the click is actually registered, it feels like the trackpad is bending more than it should. While everything on the Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition feels solid, the trackpad feels like it would be the first thing that fails on it.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Keyboard, Trackpad performance

Lastly, we have ports. There are two USB 3.0 ports on the right accompanied by a Type-C port offering USB 3.1 gen 1 speeds. There’s also the charging port and a full-sized HDMI port. While the port selection is fairly standard for this grade of machine, the placement is a little problematic. Plug any device into these ports and you’ll find that if you use an external mouse, its going to bump into those cables a LOT. Thankfully, there’s a spare USB 3.0 port on the left side as well, right next to the unified headphone/microphone port.

Xiaomi Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition Bottomline

The Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition is a surprisingly good laptop. Its performance is adequate, but perhaps its best feature is the sturdy build quality all around. What doesn’t work is the lack of backlighting on the keyboard and less than satisfying typing experience, coupled with a trackpad that has too much play. Redeeming the corners cut is the impressive battery life and when you factor in the good quality of the display and the fact that this machine weighs just 1.35 kilograms, we actually have a viable option for a thin and light machine in this price bracket. The Mi NoteBook 14 Horizon Edition is ideally suited for anyone who is looking for a laptop to fulfil their daily needs of entertainment, typing, researching on the web and maybe, just maybe, even very light photo editing. It is not meant for those who are looking for a budget-friendly editing or gaming machine. For those, you’re still better off going with an actual budget gaming laptop like the Asus TUF Gaming A15 (Review) or the Acer Predator Triton 300 (Review).

Odisha Reports More Recoveries Than New COVID-19 Cases

Odisha reported more recoveries of COVID-19 patients than new cases on Tuesday as 3,714 people were cured of the disease while 3,645 got infected with it, a health department official said. The number of recoveries in the state is now 1,25,738, which is 79.25 per cent of the total coronavirus caseload of 1,58,650.

Bhubaneswar, Sep 15: Odisha reported more recoveries of COVID-19 patients than new cases on Tuesday as 3,714 people were cured of the disease while 3,645 got infected with it, a health department official said. The number of recoveries in the state is now 1,25,738, which is 79.25 per cent of the total coronavirus caseload of 1,58,650.

The toll due to the contagion rose to 645 with eight more people succumbing to the infection – three in Cuttack and one each in Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Sambalpur and Subarnapur during the day, he said. Total 53 COVID-19 patients in the state have died due to comorbidities, according to the official.

“Today, the number of recoveiesy (3,714) is more than the detection of new positive cases (3,645),” the official said. The case fatality rate has declined to 0.40 per cent from 0.47 per cent on September 1, the data released by the department said.

Odisha currently has 32,214 active cases against Monday’s 35,928 cases, it said. Of the 3,645 new cases, 2,151 were reported from various quarantine centres and 1,494 were detected during contact tracing.

Khurda district, of which state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, reported the maximum number of fresh cases at 517, followed by Cuttack at 357 and Puri at 246, the official said. BJD MLA from Pipili in Puri district, Pradeep Maharathy, is among the fresh cases on Tuesday. He asked people who recently came in touch with him to isolate themselves and undergo tests, if necessary.

As many as 25.16 lakh samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the coastal state so far, including 43,940 on Monday. Meanwhile, the health and family welfare department has asked the district authorities to strengthen critical care facilities at the local level in order to reduce load on COVID-19 hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The direction came in wake of a surge of positive cases in the twin cities. The two cities together house as many as 6,761 active cases of the state’s total 32,214 cases. “Bhubaneswar and Cuttack carry 20.98 per cent load of active cases,” the official said.

He said that the COVID-19 patients in the twin cities face shortage of hospital beds as they are already occupied by the patients from other districts. “About 40 per cent of the COVID-19 hospital beds in the rest of the state remain vacant while there is crowding in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack,” the official said.

Verdict

The Bose Soundbar 700 brings with it an attractive, elegant premium design and fantastic sound output. It misses out on some tech like Dolby Atmos and DTSX and also does not have HDMI passthrough. It does support eARC, along with Alexa support and comes with a universal remote control. However, Alexa can be buggy at times. The soundbar is modular, which means you can attach a sub and satellite speakers in the future if you want to.

Bose Soundbar 700 detailed review

Bose as a brand has received a lot of flack from audiophiles but there is no denying that they make some great audio products. The QC series is a noise canceling force to reckon with and the Soundlink is a great portable speaker. Today we have with us the premium soundbar from Bose, the Bose Soundbar 700. Overall, the quality of sound output is what you’d expect from a premium soundbar and it brings with it some unique functions too. However, there are features the soundbar lacks which at this price point is a bummer.

What’s in the box

In the box, you get the soundbar itself along with a remote control that can double up as a universal remote control. You also get four AAA batteries, a cleaning cloth, ADAPTiQ headset, optical cable, HDMI cable and of course, the power cable. Considering this is a premium product, it is nice to see the optical and HDMI cable bundled in the box. The cleaning cloth is a boon and we will highlight why in the design section. The remote control accompanying the system is extremely interesting and we will touch upon that in the review as well.

Connectivity options

When it comes to connectivity options, the soundbar has an HDMI port for ARC connectivity, but sadly there is no HDMI pass-through option which is disappointing at this price point. There are a lot of soundbars offering this feature and some like the JBL SB450 (read our review here) even offer 4K HDR passthrough making it the HDMI hub under your TV. Moving on, the Bose Soundbar 700 also has an Optical input, USB input CEC, and of course a port for the ADAPTiQ headset. You can connect your smartphone to the system via Bluetooth if you like. The soundbar also supports Alexa voice controls so you don’t need to find your smartphone or remote control if you want to change the track or increase/decrease the volume.

Setting up the Bose Soundbar 700

The more time you invest in setting up the soundbar, the better the experience will be. Why you ask? Well, to get the best output from the soundbar, you will spend some time calibrating it to your listening positions which is a very good thing. After you connect it to your TV via ARC or an optical cable, you will be prompted to download the Bose Music app. Once the app is downloaded, you can follow the onscreen instructions which is pressing next a lot and signing into or creating a Bose account. During the setup, you will be asked to connect the ADAPTiQ headset and sit in 5 places in your room where you are most likely to sit and watch TV. This calibrates the soundbar to give you the best possible listening experience for the position you are sitting at. I highly recommend going through this setup carefully as instructed. It does influence the listening experience.

Once you’ve followed the instructions on the app you can go on to calibrate the remote control included with the soundbar as a universal remote control. This will enable you to switch on/off your TV, set-top-box and even your gaming console.

Overall, setting up the soundbar takes some time, especially when it comes to your listening position, but it is worth the effort.

Build and Design

Speaking of the design of the soundbar, it is available in two colours - black and white. The top of the soundbar is tempered glass and despite looking extremely elegant, is prone to gathering dust easily. This is why Bose has included a microfiber cleaning cloth in the box. You will spend some time cleaning the soundbar. The soundbar is also really long measuring a little under 40-inches. It is ideal for a 50 or 55-inch TV and may seem overwhelming under a smaller TV. All the connectivity options are hidden at the back which is nice. The top houses two touch sensitive buttons - one to mute the microphone and the other an action button. Below the buttons, on the front panel of the soundbar rests a small thin white light which illuminates when you give the Alexa command or interact with the remote. At times, the pulsating light looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

The drivers themselves have a wraparound metal grille giving the soundbar an elegant look and premium feel. The grill curves on the edges and wraps itself very neatly around the soundbar. You have the option to wall mount the soundbar or place it on a table top stand.

Overall, the design of the soundbar 700 is elegant and it is extremely well built.

Performance

Considering the Bose Soundbar 700 is a premium product, you expect premium performance and that’s what it delivers. One thing to note is that Bose does not list the driver specifications on its website, so we don’t know the tweeter, woofer specs in it. Even though the soundbar is one that sits under your TV, it is one that has pretty good surround effects and channel shift, something we will highlight below. It is also clear even at full volume. The only downside to the performance is the absence of Dolby Atmos and DTSX which are features you'd expect in a premium product.

Movies

Watch movies and you will realize that the soundbar is meant to give you a surround experience. From the bike chase sequence in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation to guns firing all over the place in the Matrix and even in movies like A Quiet Place where after a quiet moment you have sound of the creatures all around you, the channel shift and surround effects are incredible considering this is a soundbar. If the sound needs to come from your left or right it does feel so. You know that it is being simulated by the sound bouncing off walls, but considering the effect is coming from one bar under your TV and not surround speakers is impressive.

Dialogues are very clear too even in the heat of battler in a movie like John Wick. A musical like La La land will engross you and make you emotional with the audio alone.

Music

The Music performance of the Bose soundbar is what you’d expect from a Bose speaker. It is also dependent on the kind of music you listen to. So with classic rock, where the base isn’t necessarily overpowering, it sounds clean. Vocals are distinguishable from the instruments and highs are clear. When it comes to Daft Punk’s electronics music you can make out the different tunes of the synthesizer at play. If you like heavy metal however, then you will feel the lack of a sub for the lows. If it is classical where the vocals take centre stage, the speaker can produce them quite clearly. The speaker doesn't distort at loud volumes and even though we played music at full volume for some time, you wont need to go beyond the 70 percent volume mark in the average living room. Audiophiles may have their preferences when it comes to audio equipment for music but considering the sound bars we've tested at Digit, the Bose Soundbar 700 is definitely one good allrounder when it comes to movies and music performance.

Gaming

For gaming we played Witcher 3, Marvel Spider-Man, God of War and Doom. In all the games, the channel separation and surround effects made the games immersive. I was expecting to feel the lack of a subwoofer in a game like Doom, and honestly, there are only a few moments where I missed it. The speakers did a fine job of replicating the thump of the shotgun and the shrieks of the monsters. Even in Spider-Man, the sound of the wind and the traffic as you swing from building to building and the sound of bullets whizzing past you highlight the channel separation of the soundbar

Overall, if you are looking for a soundbar, it is every bit as impressive as you’d expect from Bose. If you are missing the extra umph, you can consider buying the optional subwoofer. Heck, for a more immersive surround experience you can even consider the optional surround satellite speakers, but if you just want the bar alone, it will perform quite well.

Alexa

As awesome as the sound output is from the speaker is, the performance of Alexa is just as buggy. It will recognize the voice commands 70 percent of the time. Using an second gen Echo Plus on a daily basis, I know Alexa’s recognition rate is a lot higher than 70 percent. The sound bar recognized some commands and for some it did what it prefered. For example when I tell my Echo Plus that its my birthday, it starts singing happy birthday. Say the same to the Bose Soundbar 700 and Alexa says she doesn't understand the question. I thought this could be an internet issue but the network was working fine throughout the house during the test.

A physical mute button rests at the top left corner of the soundbar

If you are one that has used an Alexa enabled speaker, then these shortcomings could annoy you. You can also ‘cast’ music to the speaker via your amazon music app or use bluetooth if you are using a competing service. The bar also supports Spotify, but the service isn't available in India as of writing this review. I wish it had more options to choose from like the Google Assistant, but I guess I'm just nitpicking. Overall, if you are used to an Alexa speaker you will feel right at home

Remote control

The bundled remote control with the soundbar is both traditional and futuristic. Traditional in the sense that it has all the possible buttons imaginable on it and it runs on 4 AA batteries. Futuristic because the buttons aren't clicky like a traditional remote control. And here is the best part, only that portion of the remote lights up based on the feature you are using. So if you are listening to music, the number pad and other TV related controls are deactivated. When using it as a remote for your TV, all the appropriate functions are lit. This is a convenient feature as it prevents accidental presses of the wrong button.

The remote control can give something like the Logitech Harmony a run for its money, if only it worked every time. There are times when I wanted to switch on my TV and the soundbar with it and only the soundbar came on and vice versa. Also, I failed multiple times to sync my PS4 Pro to the universal remote. Even though the process of syncing your gadgets is as simple as navigating the app, it can take some time and can get a little frustrating.

Bottom line

So here’s answering the most important question, should you buy this soundbar? For comparison, it’s hard for us to tell you alternatives to consider as we haven’t tested quite a few of them. However, think of it this way. You can buy the soundbar today, add a sub later if you miss the ground shaking thump and if you want to venture into home theatre territory, you can add the surround speakers later. It is this modular nature of the soundbar coupled with great audio performance that makes it attractive. However, remember that the base module for the Soundbar 700 costs a whopping Rs 64500 and the satellite speakers cost 28240 for a pair. This brings the cost of the entire setup, including the soundbar to Rs 1,71,740. You could get a kickass home theatre from the get-go if that's your budget. Coming back to the soundbar 700, on the downside, it is missing out on current gen tech like Dolby Atmos and DTSX and some of the smart and universal functions are buggy. It also does not have HDMI passthrough. If all these features are important to you, then you may want to consider your options. If you are looking for a premium soundbar with good sound output, then you can consider the Boss soundbar 700. If you are considering the Bose Soundbar 500 which is about Rs 20,000 cheaper, then hold your horses. We will review that one really soon.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:32 PM IST

Angry over three agriculture-related Bills, hundreds of farmers blocked major highways in parts of Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday to demand that the proposed laws should not be pursued in Parliament.

The protesters also warned that if any Member of Parliament from Punjab supported the farm Bills in Parliament, he or she would not be allowed to enter villages.

"The MPs who support the farm bills in Parliament will not be allowed to enter the villages," said Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) General Secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal.

He said members of his outfit along with those from other farmers' organisations blocked roads, mainly national highways, at several places in Punjab. There were reports of farmers blocking highways in Haryana also.

In Punjab, a sit-in was started by protesters outside Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's residence in Patiala town and also outside former Chief Minister and Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal's residence at his native Badal village in Muktsar district.

Farmers from both the states also staged a protest at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against the Bills. Later, the police detained them.

Heavy police presence was seen at various places in Haryana and Punjab to maintain law and order in view of the protest by farmers.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh appealed to the farmers not to stop traffic or violate Section 144 of the CrPC in the state over the agriculture Bills, but made it clear that no cases would be registered against them as "they are fighting for their lives".

FIRs already registered against farmers protesting in violation of Section 144 would be withdrawn, said the Chief Minister on Wednesday.

He was talking to media persons outside the Governor's House after submitting a memorandum against the anti-farmer Bills on behalf of the Punjab Congress.

The ordinances would pave the way for ending the Minimum Support Price (MSP) regime, which will spell doom for Punjab, and in fact the whole nation, he added.

Amarinder Singh urged the farmers to take their protests to Delhi, on the doorsteps of the central government, and assured them of Congress support in their fight.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 5e is a great tablet for consuming content thanks to its beautiful display. It has good battery life, good audio output, is well built and has a slim profile. However, the chipset under the hood isn’t a match for the A12 Bionic running on the iPad Air and the display doesn't support HDR to consume Netflix content. Its performance as a tablet is good and can multitask well along with running any app or game you throw at it. DeX is interesting and does give the device a laptop-like feel. However, it isn’t perfect and stutters when too many apps are open.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e detailed review

Tablets are not refreshed as often as smartphones and for good reason. They have impressive hardware under the hood, displays that have immersive entertainment value and with the advancement in OS features, you can almost use it as a laptop. If you are looking for the best tablet that money can buy, chances are you are looking at an iPad. However, if you are not interested in getting locked into a closed eco-system, then you might want to consider taking a look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. The tablet is priced at Rs 39,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant with support for LTE, which we have here for review. To put things into perspective, the entry-level 64GB Wi-Fi only iPad Air (2019) is priced at Rs 44,900. How does the Tab S5e perform? Read on and find out.

In the Box

In the box, you get the tablet along with a USB-C cable and a power adaptor. Unlike the Tab S4, you don’t get the S-Pen or the keyboard dock in the box. It is an accessory you purchase separately.

In a day and age dominated by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 devices and Apple’s A12 blowing benchmarks off the chart, it is disappointing to see the tablet run on the Snapdragon 670, a chipset used by mid-range phones. We will comment more on the performance in the following sections.

Display and Audio

Calling the Tab S5e’s display fantastic would be an understatement, but there is one and only one place I wish it performed better. If you are going to watch a lot of movies and TV shows on the device, you are in for a treat. We consumed a lot of content from Netflix, YouTube and Prime Videos on the tablet and most of it looked outstanding. Let's start with the good stuff. Colours look vibrant and fantastic. From the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer showing off the neon coloured Night City in glorious 1440p on the tablet to the cars in the Grand Tour and even the vivid house Young Sheldon grew up in, it all looks fantastic. But switch to Netflix, and for some reason, I was left wanting more. Comparing it to the iPad Air 2019, the displays are neck in neck when it comes to the performance. However, Netflix content is displayed in HDR on the iPad and in SDR on the Galaxy Tab S5e. It is possible that this one feature makes the content look slightly richer on the iPad display. And I say slightly because if you don't know what to look for, you’d pick any one display over the other based on the content being played.

Coming back to the Galaxy Tab S5e display alone, we tried using the display under direct sunlight and it works quite well. You can increase the brightness of the device a little more for use under direct sunlight. Apart from movies with dark sequences, the tablet was very easily usable under direct sunlight. When it comes to everyday tasks like reading emails, reading a book, playing games or browsing the Internet, the display worked without any complaints. It was reflective, but nothing that can't be taken care off by moving it around a bit.

Performance

When it comes to everyday performance, like checking mail, browsing the Internet, watching videos, etc. the tablet performed impressively without any stutters. It even works very well when you use apps in split screen. The only underwhelming experience is typing on the touch screen. I wish each letter had a tad more real estate in landscape mode to give users a comfortable typing experience. If you are someone who will type a lot, then investing in the keyboard accessory will be a wise decision.

When it comes to gaming too, the tablet will run any game you throw at it with ease. From graphically heavy games like Asphalt and PUBG to simple puzzle and shooting games, it all worked like a charm. If you are one that will use the camera, then know that it won’t replace your smartphone camera. But for video calls, it can get the job done well. No worries.

Since we’ve said the performance of the tablet isn’t as powerful as the Tab S4 or the iPad Air, below are some benchmarks for you to check out.

Coming to the audio, this is one place where the Galaxy Tab S5e trumps the iPad Air (2019). It has 4 speakers, unlike the Air which has 2, both firing in the same direction. So with the Galaxy Tab S5e, we have better channel separation which is quite easily noticeable when you have objects flying around the screen like in a dog fight or bullets whizzing around during an action sequence. Mission Impossibles bike chase sequence is one good example of this.

Overall, the audio is clean, dialogues are clear and the speakers are loud enough that you don't need to huddle around a table to watch content on it. You can show your friends a movie trailer in a slightly noisy environment without any trouble.

Samsung DeX

You can switch between DeX and normal tablet mode with the tap of a button in the drop-down notification window. When in DeX mode, you get a desktop like an experience which works well, but isn’t perfect. Resizing windows, multitasking, watching a video while typing a mail, all can be done. But with too many apps open, the device start to lag. Another thing to note is that even though you can use your finger for tasks like moving windows around, resizing windows, etc. you will miss a mouse. You can connect a Bluetooth mouse to the device if you want. You can use alt + tab to change tabs and some desktop-like keyboard shortcuts make desktop-like work viable. If you prefer a windows touch screen over the mouse/trackpad then you will be able to work with Dex. Otherwise, you will miss the presence of a mouse.

Overall, the DeX experience is a move in the right direction for those that want a desktop-like experience to be a part of their tablet. But you still need better hardware under the hood, like the Galaxy Tab S4 to get a butter smooth experience from it.

Build and Design

Slim, elegant and well-built are the first things that will come to mind when you see the Galaxy Tab S5e. The tablet doesn't have an all-glass back like its sibling, the Galaxy Tab S4 and I personally like that. It ensures a little more durability for fickle fingered people like me. The back has a gunmetal coloured finish very reminiscent of the iPad. Placed side by side with the iPad Air, one would think it is from the same family.

The 10.5-inch form factor is a tried-and-tested one so as far as ergonomics are concerned, you will feel right at home. When playing games or watching videos, the device is comfortable to use.

Moving to port placement, (holding the tablet in portrait mode) you have the power button cum fingerprint sensor and the volume rocker on the right, along with a tray for the SIM card and the microSD card slot. On the left, we have the keyboard dock connector. Unlike the iPad Air, the galaxy tab S5e forgoes the headphones jack which I personally miss. At the bottom, you have a USB-C port. The tablet also has 4 speakers (2 on either side when held in landscape mode) which are a big boon in entertainment when compared to the iPad Air. The rear of the tablet has the camera in the upper left corner and the front has it bang in the centre of the top bezel. Overall, it's pretty standard placement of cameras for a tablet. However, there is one ergonomic qualm I have with the device - the placement of the fingerprint sensor. This placement is just like we’ve seen on the Galaxy S10e and while it is ergonomic on a phone, it isn't so on the tablet. Reaching for it feels a little out of place and I found myself reaching for the pin to unlock the device more than the fingerprint. Not to mention that when you put it in the keyboard case, it becomes a little more difficult to unlock the device in a single touch. Using the fingerprint sensor on this device takes some getting used to. Although it must be noted that the Galaxy Tab S5e houses a fingerprint sensor in a day and age where the Tab S4 lacks one.

Overall, the build of the tablet is good and premium. The tablet is slim and without investing in a case to prop it up at an angle, typing in landscape mode is a tad annoying. The size is good enough for playing games and watching videos. In fact, I didn’t face any issues while watching videos on the device during a cab ride, with the tablet placed on my lap.

Keyboard dock

The keyboard dock is sold separately and it has the same problems that two-in-one laptops have. But let's get the good out of the way first. It snaps on magnetically to the tablet in one click and is held together quite well. The Apple smart cover for the iPad is quite flimsy in comparison, especially as far as snapping on is concerned. But just like the smart cover, the Keyboard dock for the Galaxy Tab S5e can be propped up in one position only. It makes it tough to prop the tablet when you have a direct light source above you.

Coming to the keyboard itself, it is a lot better to type on than the keyboard cover found on the iPad Pro. The keys have a decent amount of travel and apart from the cramped number pad, the keyboard is decent to type on. A part of this review was typed on the tablet, so it works well for those looking to write on the go and want a thin and light typing device with a dedicated keyboard and don't want a full sized laptop. I would, however, have appreciated a dedicated home, and back button on the keyboard rather than resorting to the touch screen. It doesn't feel natural. There is a dedicated search button that brings up the google assistant and for some strange reason, there is a dedicated button to bring up the on-screen keyboard. Why would I need that when I have a physical keyboard?

Now to the worst part about the keyboard. Unlike the iPad Pro keyboard that flips in to give you a clean grip when holding the tablet, the Galaxy Tab S5e keyboard lazily turns and lets you feel the keyboard when holding the tablet. This isn't exactly comfortable and can get a little annoying especially if you want to watch something by holding the tablet in your hand for a long time. It's just like a 2-in-1 laptop where the keyboard can be felt when you prop the laptop in tablet mode.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e has a 7040mAh battery - in line with what we saw on the Galaxy Tab S4. In our battery benchmark with the display on full brightness, the tablet died in a little over 6 hours. However, in real-world usage, it can last much longer. Playback from streaming services saw a drop of about 13 per cent in one hour based on the streaming service. Local playback saw about 8 per cent drop per hour. Keeping the brightness on auto, and you have a device that can last about 10 to 12 hours of content consumption with ease. The battery life will vary based on usage and some productivity scenarios may see it drain faster

Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e?

Look at it this way. It is cheaper than the iPad and offers near par performance as far as basic everyday work is concerned including content consumption, gaming, social media and some productivity. But the Snapdragon 670 is nowhere near as powerful as the A12 on the iPad Air. You can run some intense photo editing and Augmented Reality apps on the iPad which will bring the Galaxy Tab S5e to its knees. If you are looking for a tablet to replace your laptop for basic work and entertainment or are looking to get a device with good battery life for use on the go, then yes you can consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. For the professional using dedicated apps like Photoshop, the iPad Air is a better choice if the iPad Pro is out of your budget

The Farmer Who Sold His Cow So His Daughter Could Study

The Farmer Who Sold His Cow So His Daughter Could Study

A farmer sold his cow so his daughter could continue her education.

A farmer from Himachal Pradesh who sold his cow so his daughter could continue online classes has received an outpouring of praise and offers of help on social media. On Tuesday, popular page 'Humans of Bombay' shared the story of the farmer, who has not been named. In his interview with 'Humans of Bombay', the farmer revealed that when the pandemic forced schools to move their classes online, he borrowed money from his friends so he could buy a smartphone for his 10-year-old daughter.

"Money has always been tight- I make 5000 Rupees each month, sometimes less, but I ensured that both my children went to school," he said, adding that he had to drop out of school in eight grade but wanted his seven-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter to get the best education possible.

When his daughter's school started online classes, he did not have a smartphone. The schoolgirl initially went around their village, borrowing smartphones from people so she could study. "She would spend half the day wandering around the entire village, trying to find someone to borrow a phone from. Soon, people started to get fed up," the farmer said.

Seeing her despondent, he decided to arrange for a smartphone. "I spoke to a few of my friends, explained my situation and they lent me 5000 Rupees!" he said. The farmer and his wife then surprised their children with a smartphone. "My daughter took it and immediately started studying; she's the one who has the phone most of the time. I was so happy that her studies weren't compromised," he said.

After a few weeks, however, the farmer's friends wanted him to return the money he had borrowed. He would have had to sell the smartphone to arrange for the money, but the thought of breaking his daughter's heart forced him to make the difficult decision of selling his cow instead.

"I did what I had to - I sold my cow and paid my debts, even though we're dependent on selling cow milk to survive," he said. He added that it was his daughter's dream to become a doctor and concluded his interview with the conviction that she would, one day, definitely wear a doctor's white lab coat.

The farmer's story has touched hearts on social media, garnering 14,000 'likes' on Facebook and more than 52,000 'likes' on Instagram.

In the comments section, several people asked for the farmer's contact details so they could offer help, while others praised him.

"Such an inspiring story, I'm sure they would need plenty of help going forward too. If Humans of Bombay could publish more of such stories and enable us to help them directly (I would love to be able to support this family or another in need) then I'm sure lots would come forward to do their bit," wrote one commenter.

"Humans of Bombay, how do I help this wonderful father educate his children and get his cow back?" another asked.

Process to Pick Next Party President Set in Motion With Constitution of Election Authority: Congress

On whether the organisational changes had Rahul Gandhi's imprint, Surjewala said Rahul Gandhi was unanimously elected in an AICC session, but post the 2019 verdict he chose to take moral responsibility and resigned.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 10:30 AM IST

The Congress on Saturday said that Sonia Gandhi has made organisational changes after authorisation from the party's working committee and has set in motion the process of election of the next party president by constituting an election authority. Asked about the organisational changes made by Gandhi and the subsequent reported statements by some leaders who had written to her over party reforms, Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said he had not seen a single statement by any Congress leader on the issue and cannot comment on that.

On whether the organisational changes had Rahul Gandhi's imprint, he said Rahul Gandhi was unanimously elected in an AICC session, but post the 2019 verdict he chose to take moral responsibility and resigned. "Crores and crores of Congress workers and unanimously all leaders including the ones that you mentioned in the meeting of the CWC expressed complete confidence in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and in fact some of them urged him to take over as Congress president," he said at an online press conference.

However, he said, it was not for him to comment on the issue at this juncture "for Congress president Sonia Gandhi has constituted an election authority and has set the process of election of the President in motion". On being pressed further on the issue, Surjewala recalled Sonia Gandhi's remarks where she had said that "'our job is to fight the Modi government and its anti-people policies and not fight with each other' and all of us are working towards that single minded goal, like Arjuna used to only look at the eye of the fish".

To queries on the organisational changes made by Sonia Gandhi, he said change is part of a continuous process and in one voice the Congress Working Committee had decided that she should make all organisational changes afresh, based on which she made these changes. "A lot of new people have got a chance, many old people of the party have got a chance, a lot of colleagues who were already there have got more strength to continue serving the organisation," he said.

In a major organisational reshuffle, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday dropped Ghulam Nabi Azad, Motilal Vora, Ambika Soni and Mallikarjun Kharge as AICC general secretaries, reconstituted the CWC and appointed P Chidambaram, Randeep Surjewala, Tariq Anwar and Jitendra Singh as its regular members. Gandhi also formed a six-member special committee to assist her in organisational matters, apart from reconstituting the central election authority of the AICC with Madhusudan Mistry as its chairman, Rajesh Misra, Krishna Byre Gowda, S Jothimani and Arvinder Singh Lovely as its members.

Gandhi, 73, left for the United States on Saturday for a routine medical check-up, sources close to her said. She would return in the last week of September and would miss more than half of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

She is accompanied by Rahul Gandhi, who is expected to return within a week, they said. Her medical check-up was overdue and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sources said.

She had cleared the Congress' organisational restructuring before departing for her medical check-up.

Integrated Townships: COVID-19 brings their advantages to the fore

0
22
Building

During a pandemic like COVID-19, there is a strong rationale for living in integrated townships. These self-sustaining, compact urban ecosystems are now more than just lifestyle upgrades – they provide the kind of controlled environment that makes a big difference during such an outbreak. Gated communities offer security, but integrated townships let residents get through the prolonged siege-like situation of a pandemic with a much lower impact on the quality of life.

Anuj Puri

Anuj Puri, Chairman – ANAROCK Property Consultants, says, “Going forward, dispersed offices and flexible workplace policies around WFH will spur housing demand on city peripheries, beyond the city-center hotspots. This will lead to higher demand for large township developments which, because of their massive size, have been developed on the peripheries. However, they account for a mere 2 pc of all housing supply since 2010, so their numbers are currently inadequate to meet the coming demand.”

Constrained supply

Integrated townships began their Indian innings primarily as a lifestyle statement – the conveniences and address value come at an added cost which does not appeal to budget home seekers. The subtle luxury quotient, a function of the surrounding infrastructure rather than in individual properties, resulted in townships catering to a niche rather than to the masses. Also, very few developers have the expertise and resources to deploy integrated townships. As a result, the supply of integrated townships remained restricted even as other formats proliferated.Integrated Townships As on date, the top 7 cities have just over 101 township projects (launched since 2010 till date), accounting for around 3.16 lakh housing units. (Besides mixed-use developments, townships with more than 2,000 housing units are also considered).

This is only a minuscule 2 pc share of overall housing projects launched during this period. Clearly, this is a hugely under-served segment whose underpinning relevance and importance has been emphatically brought to light by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Out of the 101 projects, nearly 57 are large purely residential projects with some basic facilities like a retail shop, pharmacy, salon, and some form of entertainment. The remaining 44 are full-fledged mixed-use developments with dedicated retail, entertainment, education, commercial, health, and residential spaces. NCR and MMR have the highest saturation of townships.

“Beyond superior conveniences and security, townships offer a sense of community which is extremely important in times like the coronavirus pandemic,” says Puri. “Living in such projects also helps work-from-home professionals to maintain optimum productivity while being assured of their and their families’ health and safety. Many townships even offer a walk-to-work option.”

Apart from the expertise to plan and execute such large projects, integrated townships also require gargantuan investments in capital, land, and other resources. Resultantly, integrated townships will largely remain the purview of Grade A developers.

Integrated Township Supply (Completed & Ongoing)

  • NCR42 township projects with approx. 1.33 lakh residential units. 22 of these (with 55,000 units) are mixed-use developments; the remaining 20 projects are exclusively residential with over 78,000 units.
  • MMR17 township projects, of which 8 are mixed-use and 9 exclusively residential. Together, they account for over 63,500 homes.
  • Bengaluru10 mega township projects with 35,230 units in all, of which 3 are mixed-use and the remaining 7 are large, well-equipped residential communities.
  • Hyderabad9 township projects, of which only 1 is mixed-use and 8 are purely residential. Together, they have more than 21,600 units.
  • Pune and Kolkata8 large township projects each, with approx. 19,700 and 27,150 homes respectively. Interestingly, Pune has more mixed-use developments (5) than purely residential townships (3) while Kolkata has 2 mixed-use developments and 6 purely residential townships.
  • Chennai7 township projects with nearly 16,200 residential units, of which 3 are mixed-use developments and 4 are purely residential.

The USP

The USPs

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the most important features of townships probably are their considerable distance from mid-city infection hot zones and their superior security and sanitation. It has also been confirmed that the virus is more easily transmitted in areas polluted by excessive traffic. The reduced and regulated traffic and large, air-cleansing green zones in integrated townships are therefore a compelling argument. In townships where they are available, schools, shopping and healthcare nearby are distinct advantages. Multi-level security arrangements can ensure very effective segregation from surrounding areas, as well as contact tracing if the need arises.

However, the main value-adds in such projects predate the pandemic. Most townships are well-planned layouts where optimum space is utilized. Landscaped gardens, jogging tracks and dedicated play areas enhance the overall liveability quotient. Integrated townships also tend to have advanced waste management and rainwater harvesting.

Opening up

Given the nature of the times, we may soon see more such projects being announced. Various government and nodal development agencies have already incorporated various townships-focused changes in their city planning, such as better road connectivity, utilities supply and sewage.

Some of the more promising areas for future development include Kalyan-Bhiwandi and Boisar in MMR, Sohna in Gurugram, North Bengaluru, Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, Gahunje in Pune, and West Hyderabad, among others.

These locations meet the most important criteria of being well-connected and having enough contiguous land parcels to accommodate integrated townships.

Egypt Building Highways Near Pyramids, Conservationists Flabbergasted

Egypt Building Highways Near Pyramids, Conservationists "Flabbergasted"

Critics say they could cause irrevocable damage to one of the world's most important heritage sites.

Egypt Building Highways Near Pyramids, Conservationists 'Flabbergasted'

Superhighway cuts across desert within a view of the Red Pyramid in Egypt.

Memphis:

Egypt is building two highways across the pyramids plateau outside Cairo, reviving and expanding a project that was suspended in the 1990s after an international outcry.

The Great Pyramids, Egypt's top tourist destination, are the sole survivor of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the plateau is a UNESCO world heritage site.

The highways are part of an infrastructure push spearheaded by Egypt's powerful military and championed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is building a new capital city to ease the population pressure on Cairo, home to 20 million people.

The northern highway will cross the desert 2.5 km (1.6 miles) south of the Great Pyramids. The southern one will pass between the Step Pyramid of Saqqara - the oldest one - and the Dahshur area, home to the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid.

Each highway appears to be about eight lanes wide.

Critics say they could cause irrevocable damage to one of the world's most important heritage sites. Authorities say they will be built with care and improve transport links, connecting new urban developments and bypassing central Cairo's congestion.

"The roads are very, very important for development, for Egyptians, for inside Egypt," said Mostafa al-Waziri, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities. "Know that we take good care of our antiquities sites everywhere in Egypt."

Some Egyptologists and conservationists say the highways will disrupt the integrity of the pyramids plateau, pave over unexplored archaeological sites, generate pollution that could corrode monuments, produce litter and expose closed areas packed with hidden archaeological treasures to looting.

Al-Waziri said existing roads were much closer to the pyramids and carried a lot of tourist buses. "That is why we are doing a lot of development," he said, noting plans to use electric tourist buses within the plateau to avoid pollution.

MEMPHIS

The highways, which will dissect the plateau into three, will cross a section of ancient Memphis, one of the world's biggest and most influential cities for almost 3,000 years.

"I was flabbergasted by what I saw," said former senior UNESCO official Said Zulficar, who visited a portion of the southern highway two months ago. "All the work that I had done nearly 25 years ago is now being put into question."

Zulficar led a successful campaign in the mid 1990s to suspend construction of the northern highway, a branch of Cairo's first ringroad. UNESCO said it had requested detailed information on the new plan several times and asked to send a monitoring mission.

The state press centre referred a Reuters request for further comment on the plans to a communications advisor of the tourism and antiquities ministry, who could not be reached.

Construction began well over a year ago in desert areas largely out of public sight and became more visible around March, Egyptologists and Google Earth images indicate.

On a recent visit, Reuters journalists saw heavy machinery clearing fields and building bridges and junctions along both highways. Hundreds of uprooted date palms lay in piles.

The southern highway is a part of Cairo's second ringroad that will connect the western satellite city of Sixth of October to the new capital city east of Cairo via 16 km of desert on the pyramids plateau, farmland and a corner of Memphis.

In 2014, the World Bank estimated congestion in the greater Cairo area cut about 3.6 percentage points off Egypt's output.

"The road cuts through archaeologically unexplored cemeteries of the little-known 13th Dynasty, in walking distance of the pyramids of Pepi II and Khendjer and the Mastabat el-Fara'un", said an Egyptologist who knows the area.

The person was among six Egyptologists Reuters spoke to. Most of them declined to be named for fear of losing clearance to handle antiquities.

One said caches of statues and blocks with hieroglyphs had been unearthed since highway construction began; the antiquities authority said on its Facebook page these had been discovered on nearby private property.

Memphis, said to have been founded in about 3,000 BC when Egypt was united into a single country, was eclipsed but not abandoned when Alexander the Great moved the capital to Alexandria in 331 BC.

It extended more than 6 square kilometres, the Nile valley's largest ancient settlement site.

The new road comes close to the ancient city's commercial districts, its harbour walls and the former site of an ancient Nilometer, used to measure the height of the annual flood, said David Jeffreys, a British Egyptologist who has been working on Memphis for the Egypt Exploration Society since 1981.

It also endangers a Roman wall that once bordered the Nile that Jeffreys said few people were aware of.

"Memphis has long been neglected, even by Egyptologists, as it is a complicated site to excavate," another Egyptologist said. "But it is enormously rich, bursting with temples, archives, administrative buildings and industrial areas."

Authorities charge Uber backup driver involved in fatal self-driving crash

The case is still yet to be resolved

Polestar accelerates the shift to sustainable mobility, by making electric driving irresistible.

The backup safety driver that was behind the wheel of a self-driving Uber vehicle that crashed in 2018, killing a pedestrian, has been charged.

Officials said on Tuesday that driver Rafaela Vasquez was charged with negligent homicide on August 27 over the crash in Tempe that killed 49-year-old Elain Herzberg, the Associated Press reports. It was the first pedestrian fatality involving a self-driving vehicle.

The charge comes in light of allegations that Vasquez was distracted moments before the self-driving Uber she was monitoring struck Herzberg who was crossing the road.

[Read: Another UK escooter trial is on hold because people are breaking the rules]

Vasquez told investigators that she didn’t use her phone before the accident. While you can’t see a phone in the video evidence that depicts the moments before the crash, it’s clear her eyes were not entirely on the road.

Warning: The footage is edited, but viewer discretion is still advised.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigating the case found Vasquez failed to watch the road sufficiently as she watched TV on her phone, which resulted in the crash.

Investigators also cited other contributing factors including: “Uber’s inadequate safety procedures and ineffective oversight of its drivers, Herzberg’s decision to cross the street and not use a crosswalk, and the Arizona Department of Transportation’s insufficient oversight of autonomous vehicle testing.”

Despite the above reported contributing factors, Uber is not being charged.

Geneva:

India on Tuesday described Pakistan as an "epicenter of terrorism" and said no one deserves unsolicited lecture on human rights from Islamabad that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities including Hindus, Sikhs and Christians.

Exercising the Right of Reply to the statements made by Pakistan at the 45th session of Human Rights Council (HRC), the Indian representative said that it has become habitual for Pakistan to malign India with false and fabricated narratives for its self-serving malicious purposes.

"Neither India nor others deserve this unsolicited lecture on human rights from a country that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities, is an epicenter of terrorism, has the distinction of providing pensions to individuals on UN Sanctions list and has a Prime Minister who proudly admits training tens of thousands of terrorists to fight in Jammu and Kashmir," the Indian diplomat said.

The diplomat said that it was not surprising that other relevant multilateral institutions have been raising serious concerns on Pakistan's failure to stop terror financing and lack of effective actions against all terror entities in Pakistan.

Highlighting the nefarious designs of Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the diplomat said, "the mass influx of outsiders has whittled down the number of Kashmiris to an insignificant number in Pakistan occupied parts of Indian Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh."

"In its zeal to reassert its theocratic ideology, it has ensured that ethnic and religious minorities have no future through systematic persecution, blasphemy laws, forced conversions, targeted killings, sectarian violence and faith-based discrimination," the diplomat said.

"Thousands of Sikh, Hindus and Christian minority women and girls have been subjected to abductions, forced marriages and conversions in Pakistan."

On the plight of people in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, the Indian diplomat said, "Not a single day has gone by when a family in Balochistan doesn't find its members picked up or kidnapped by the security forces of Pakistan."

"Pakistan does well when it comes to intimidation and attacks against journalists, human rights defenders and political dissidents in particular by its state machinery. It is not without a reason that Pakistan has been highlighted by international organizations as a country where journalists are slain and their killers go scot free," the diplomat said.

India also slammed Pakistan for "abusing various HRC mechanisms and platforms for raising issues, which are extraneous to the mandate of the HRC and which relate to internal affairs of India, with a view to distract the attention of the international community from serious human rights violations committed by it against its own people, including in Indian territories occupied by it."

India also rejected the reference made by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.

"The OIC has no locus standi to comment on internal affairs of India. The OIC has allowed itself to be misused by Pakistan to subverse its own Agenda. It's for the members of the OIC to decide if it is in their interests to allow Pakistan to do so," the Indian representative said.

India also advised Turkey to refrain from commenting on its internal affairs and develop a better understanding of the democratic practices.

Walkouts from Parliament are made to make a political point. However, some walkouts miss to make the point and may, in fact, boomerang. The Congress walkout on Tuesday after the suo moto statement by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is being seen as a missed point.

Sources say that just before Singh was scheduled to speak, some Congress MPs reached out to few leaders of opposition parties like the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) to also stage a walkout. When they refused to do so, the Congress leaders made their way out alone.

It is a catch-22 situation for the Grand Old Party. It does not want to be seen as being against the government on national security issues. Nor does it want to add to a perception which has been built up against the Congress that it indulges in a strategy and makes comment that are lapped up either by China or Pakistan and used to their benefit. In the past, many in Pakistan and Chinese media have quoted Rahul Gandhi and this has been used by the BJP to make the point that Congress feels more for its opponents than its own country.

Rahul Gandhi’s aggressive stand against the government on the China issue has also forced the party to be belligerent. So the Congress is in a dilemma. It does not want to be seen as the lone party taking on the government and questioning it over China and its foreign policy. It wants to be seen as a consensus voice over the issue. The problem for the Congress is that other opposition parties understand its pitfalls. The encounter with the Chinese army in the Galwan Valley, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had, in fact, issued a public statement that they should be seen as being one with the government on this matter.

Even the Trinamool Congress which is fighting the BJP in Bengal, has stayed away from this China rhetoric. It refused to accede to the Congress’ request to walkout on Tuesday. Besides, the Congress has recently burnt its bridges with the TMC by appointing a known Mamata Banerjee baiter Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury as party chief in the state.

The Congress is also caught in the dilemma of being seen as the lone alternative to the BJP on a muscular foreign policy issue. The part-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) 1 and 2 was badgered by the BJP and Narendra Modi as being soft on terror.

The narrative was so built that eventually in stark contrast to Modi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh came across as a weak man. The Congress feels the confrontation with China could be a payback time to the BJP.

However, unfortunately for the Congress, it is being forced to ‘ekla chalo’ (walk alone). And, in this, it has no choice as no other opposition party wants to walk by its side on the China issue.
