Bhubaneswar, Sep 15: Odisha reported more recoveries of COVID-19 patients than new cases on Tuesday as 3,714 people were cured of the disease while 3,645 got infected with it, a health department official said. The number of recoveries in the state is now 1,25,738, which is 79.25 per cent of the total coronavirus caseload of 1,58,650.

The toll due to the contagion rose to 645 with eight more people succumbing to the infection – three in Cuttack and one each in Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Sambalpur and Subarnapur during the day, he said. Total 53 COVID-19 patients in the state have died due to comorbidities, according to the official.

“Today, the number of recoveiesy (3,714) is more than the detection of new positive cases (3,645),” the official said. The case fatality rate has declined to 0.40 per cent from 0.47 per cent on September 1, the data released by the department said.

Odisha currently has 32,214 active cases against Monday’s 35,928 cases, it said. Of the 3,645 new cases, 2,151 were reported from various quarantine centres and 1,494 were detected during contact tracing.

Khurda district, of which state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, reported the maximum number of fresh cases at 517, followed by Cuttack at 357 and Puri at 246, the official said. BJD MLA from Pipili in Puri district, Pradeep Maharathy, is among the fresh cases on Tuesday. He asked people who recently came in touch with him to isolate themselves and undergo tests, if necessary.

As many as 25.16 lakh samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the coastal state so far, including 43,940 on Monday. Meanwhile, the health and family welfare department has asked the district authorities to strengthen critical care facilities at the local level in order to reduce load on COVID-19 hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The direction came in wake of a surge of positive cases in the twin cities. The two cities together house as many as 6,761 active cases of the state’s total 32,214 cases. “Bhubaneswar and Cuttack carry 20.98 per cent load of active cases,” the official said.

He said that the COVID-19 patients in the twin cities face shortage of hospital beds as they are already occupied by the patients from other districts. “About 40 per cent of the COVID-19 hospital beds in the rest of the state remain vacant while there is crowding in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack,” the official said.

Verdict

The Bose Soundbar 700 brings with it an attractive, elegant premium design and fantastic sound output. It misses out on some tech like Dolby Atmos and DTSX and also does not have HDMI passthrough. It does support eARC, along with Alexa support and comes with a universal remote control. However, Alexa can be buggy at times. The soundbar is modular, which means you can attach a sub and satellite speakers in the future if you want to.

Bose Soundbar 700 detailed review

Bose as a brand has received a lot of flack from audiophiles but there is no denying that they make some great audio products. The QC series is a noise canceling force to reckon with and the Soundlink is a great portable speaker. Today we have with us the premium soundbar from Bose, the Bose Soundbar 700. Overall, the quality of sound output is what you’d expect from a premium soundbar and it brings with it some unique functions too. However, there are features the soundbar lacks which at this price point is a bummer.

What’s in the box

In the box, you get the soundbar itself along with a remote control that can double up as a universal remote control. You also get four AAA batteries, a cleaning cloth, ADAPTiQ headset, optical cable, HDMI cable and of course, the power cable. Considering this is a premium product, it is nice to see the optical and HDMI cable bundled in the box. The cleaning cloth is a boon and we will highlight why in the design section. The remote control accompanying the system is extremely interesting and we will touch upon that in the review as well.

Connectivity options

When it comes to connectivity options, the soundbar has an HDMI port for ARC connectivity, but sadly there is no HDMI pass-through option which is disappointing at this price point. There are a lot of soundbars offering this feature and some like the JBL SB450 (read our review here) even offer 4K HDR passthrough making it the HDMI hub under your TV. Moving on, the Bose Soundbar 700 also has an Optical input, USB input CEC, and of course a port for the ADAPTiQ headset. You can connect your smartphone to the system via Bluetooth if you like. The soundbar also supports Alexa voice controls so you don’t need to find your smartphone or remote control if you want to change the track or increase/decrease the volume.

Setting up the Bose Soundbar 700

The more time you invest in setting up the soundbar, the better the experience will be. Why you ask? Well, to get the best output from the soundbar, you will spend some time calibrating it to your listening positions which is a very good thing. After you connect it to your TV via ARC or an optical cable, you will be prompted to download the Bose Music app. Once the app is downloaded, you can follow the onscreen instructions which is pressing next a lot and signing into or creating a Bose account. During the setup, you will be asked to connect the ADAPTiQ headset and sit in 5 places in your room where you are most likely to sit and watch TV. This calibrates the soundbar to give you the best possible listening experience for the position you are sitting at. I highly recommend going through this setup carefully as instructed. It does influence the listening experience.

Once you’ve followed the instructions on the app you can go on to calibrate the remote control included with the soundbar as a universal remote control. This will enable you to switch on/off your TV, set-top-box and even your gaming console.

Overall, setting up the soundbar takes some time, especially when it comes to your listening position, but it is worth the effort.

Build and Design

Speaking of the design of the soundbar, it is available in two colours - black and white. The top of the soundbar is tempered glass and despite looking extremely elegant, is prone to gathering dust easily. This is why Bose has included a microfiber cleaning cloth in the box. You will spend some time cleaning the soundbar. The soundbar is also really long measuring a little under 40-inches. It is ideal for a 50 or 55-inch TV and may seem overwhelming under a smaller TV. All the connectivity options are hidden at the back which is nice. The top houses two touch sensitive buttons - one to mute the microphone and the other an action button. Below the buttons, on the front panel of the soundbar rests a small thin white light which illuminates when you give the Alexa command or interact with the remote. At times, the pulsating light looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

The drivers themselves have a wraparound metal grille giving the soundbar an elegant look and premium feel. The grill curves on the edges and wraps itself very neatly around the soundbar. You have the option to wall mount the soundbar or place it on a table top stand.

Overall, the design of the soundbar 700 is elegant and it is extremely well built.

Performance

Considering the Bose Soundbar 700 is a premium product, you expect premium performance and that’s what it delivers. One thing to note is that Bose does not list the driver specifications on its website, so we don’t know the tweeter, woofer specs in it. Even though the soundbar is one that sits under your TV, it is one that has pretty good surround effects and channel shift, something we will highlight below. It is also clear even at full volume. The only downside to the performance is the absence of Dolby Atmos and DTSX which are features you'd expect in a premium product.

Movies

Watch movies and you will realize that the soundbar is meant to give you a surround experience. From the bike chase sequence in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation to guns firing all over the place in the Matrix and even in movies like A Quiet Place where after a quiet moment you have sound of the creatures all around you, the channel shift and surround effects are incredible considering this is a soundbar. If the sound needs to come from your left or right it does feel so. You know that it is being simulated by the sound bouncing off walls, but considering the effect is coming from one bar under your TV and not surround speakers is impressive.

Dialogues are very clear too even in the heat of battler in a movie like John Wick. A musical like La La land will engross you and make you emotional with the audio alone.

Music

The Music performance of the Bose soundbar is what you’d expect from a Bose speaker. It is also dependent on the kind of music you listen to. So with classic rock, where the base isn’t necessarily overpowering, it sounds clean. Vocals are distinguishable from the instruments and highs are clear. When it comes to Daft Punk’s electronics music you can make out the different tunes of the synthesizer at play. If you like heavy metal however, then you will feel the lack of a sub for the lows. If it is classical where the vocals take centre stage, the speaker can produce them quite clearly. The speaker doesn't distort at loud volumes and even though we played music at full volume for some time, you wont need to go beyond the 70 percent volume mark in the average living room. Audiophiles may have their preferences when it comes to audio equipment for music but considering the sound bars we've tested at Digit, the Bose Soundbar 700 is definitely one good allrounder when it comes to movies and music performance.

Gaming

For gaming we played Witcher 3, Marvel Spider-Man, God of War and Doom. In all the games, the channel separation and surround effects made the games immersive. I was expecting to feel the lack of a subwoofer in a game like Doom, and honestly, there are only a few moments where I missed it. The speakers did a fine job of replicating the thump of the shotgun and the shrieks of the monsters. Even in Spider-Man, the sound of the wind and the traffic as you swing from building to building and the sound of bullets whizzing past you highlight the channel separation of the soundbar

Overall, if you are looking for a soundbar, it is every bit as impressive as you’d expect from Bose. If you are missing the extra umph, you can consider buying the optional subwoofer. Heck, for a more immersive surround experience you can even consider the optional surround satellite speakers, but if you just want the bar alone, it will perform quite well.

Alexa

As awesome as the sound output is from the speaker is, the performance of Alexa is just as buggy. It will recognize the voice commands 70 percent of the time. Using an second gen Echo Plus on a daily basis, I know Alexa’s recognition rate is a lot higher than 70 percent. The sound bar recognized some commands and for some it did what it prefered. For example when I tell my Echo Plus that its my birthday, it starts singing happy birthday. Say the same to the Bose Soundbar 700 and Alexa says she doesn't understand the question. I thought this could be an internet issue but the network was working fine throughout the house during the test.

A physical mute button rests at the top left corner of the soundbar

If you are one that has used an Alexa enabled speaker, then these shortcomings could annoy you. You can also ‘cast’ music to the speaker via your amazon music app or use bluetooth if you are using a competing service. The bar also supports Spotify, but the service isn't available in India as of writing this review. I wish it had more options to choose from like the Google Assistant, but I guess I'm just nitpicking. Overall, if you are used to an Alexa speaker you will feel right at home

Remote control

The bundled remote control with the soundbar is both traditional and futuristic. Traditional in the sense that it has all the possible buttons imaginable on it and it runs on 4 AA batteries. Futuristic because the buttons aren't clicky like a traditional remote control. And here is the best part, only that portion of the remote lights up based on the feature you are using. So if you are listening to music, the number pad and other TV related controls are deactivated. When using it as a remote for your TV, all the appropriate functions are lit. This is a convenient feature as it prevents accidental presses of the wrong button.

The remote control can give something like the Logitech Harmony a run for its money, if only it worked every time. There are times when I wanted to switch on my TV and the soundbar with it and only the soundbar came on and vice versa. Also, I failed multiple times to sync my PS4 Pro to the universal remote. Even though the process of syncing your gadgets is as simple as navigating the app, it can take some time and can get a little frustrating.

Bottom line

So here’s answering the most important question, should you buy this soundbar? For comparison, it’s hard for us to tell you alternatives to consider as we haven’t tested quite a few of them. However, think of it this way. You can buy the soundbar today, add a sub later if you miss the ground shaking thump and if you want to venture into home theatre territory, you can add the surround speakers later. It is this modular nature of the soundbar coupled with great audio performance that makes it attractive. However, remember that the base module for the Soundbar 700 costs a whopping Rs 64500 and the satellite speakers cost 28240 for a pair. This brings the cost of the entire setup, including the soundbar to Rs 1,71,740. You could get a kickass home theatre from the get-go if that's your budget. Coming back to the soundbar 700, on the downside, it is missing out on current gen tech like Dolby Atmos and DTSX and some of the smart and universal functions are buggy. It also does not have HDMI passthrough. If all these features are important to you, then you may want to consider your options. If you are looking for a premium soundbar with good sound output, then you can consider the Boss soundbar 700. If you are considering the Bose Soundbar 500 which is about Rs 20,000 cheaper, then hold your horses. We will review that one really soon.

Farmers participated in a protest in Amritsar on Tuesday against the ordinances passed by the cabinet. (ANI)

The protesters also warned that if any Member of Parliament from Punjab supported the farm Bills in Parliament, he or she would not be allowed to enter villages.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:32 PM IST

Angry over three agriculture-related Bills, hundreds of farmers blocked major highways in parts of Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday to demand that the proposed laws should not be pursued in Parliament.

The protesters also warned that if any Member of Parliament from Punjab supported the farm Bills in Parliament, he or she would not be allowed to enter villages.

"The MPs who support the farm bills in Parliament will not be allowed to enter the villages," said Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) General Secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal.

He said members of his outfit along with those from other farmers' organisations blocked roads, mainly national highways, at several places in Punjab. There were reports of farmers blocking highways in Haryana also.

In Punjab, a sit-in was started by protesters outside Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's residence in Patiala town and also outside former Chief Minister and Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal's residence at his native Badal village in Muktsar district.

Farmers from both the states also staged a protest at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against the Bills. Later, the police detained them.

Heavy police presence was seen at various places in Haryana and Punjab to maintain law and order in view of the protest by farmers.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh appealed to the farmers not to stop traffic or violate Section 144 of the CrPC in the state over the agriculture Bills, but made it clear that no cases would be registered against them as "they are fighting for their lives".

FIRs already registered against farmers protesting in violation of Section 144 would be withdrawn, said the Chief Minister on Wednesday.

He was talking to media persons outside the Governor's House after submitting a memorandum against the anti-farmer Bills on behalf of the Punjab Congress.

The ordinances would pave the way for ending the Minimum Support Price (MSP) regime, which will spell doom for Punjab, and in fact the whole nation, he added.

Amarinder Singh urged the farmers to take their protests to Delhi, on the doorsteps of the central government, and assured them of Congress support in their fight.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 5e is a great tablet for consuming content thanks to its beautiful display. It has good battery life, good audio output, is well built and has a slim profile. However, the chipset under the hood isn’t a match for the A12 Bionic running on the iPad Air and the display doesn't support HDR to consume Netflix content. Its performance as a tablet is good and can multitask well along with running any app or game you throw at it. DeX is interesting and does give the device a laptop-like feel. However, it isn’t perfect and stutters when too many apps are open.

They have impressive hardware under the hood, displays that have immersive entertainment value and with the advancement in OS features, you can almost use it as a laptop. If you are looking for the best tablet that money can buy, chances are you are looking at an iPad. However, if you are not interested in getting locked into a closed eco-system, then you might want to consider taking a look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. The tablet is priced at Rs 39,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant with support for LTE, which we have here for review. To put things into perspective, the entry-level 64GB Wi-Fi only iPad Air (2019) is priced at Rs 44,900. How does the Tab S5e perform? Read on and find out.

In the Box

In the box, you get the tablet along with a USB-C cable and a power adaptor. Unlike the Tab S4, you don’t get the S-Pen or the keyboard dock in the box. It is an accessory you purchase separately.

In a day and age dominated by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 devices and Apple’s A12 blowing benchmarks off the chart, it is disappointing to see the tablet run on the Snapdragon 670, a chipset used by mid-range phones. We will comment more on the performance in the following sections.

Display and Audio

Calling the Tab S5e’s display fantastic would be an understatement, but there is one and only one place I wish it performed better. If you are going to watch a lot of movies and TV shows on the device, you are in for a treat. We consumed a lot of content from Netflix, YouTube and Prime Videos on the tablet and most of it looked outstanding. Let's start with the good stuff. Colours look vibrant and fantastic. From the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer showing off the neon coloured Night City in glorious 1440p on the tablet to the cars in the Grand Tour and even the vivid house Young Sheldon grew up in, it all looks fantastic. But switch to Netflix, and for some reason, I was left wanting more. Comparing it to the iPad Air 2019, the displays are neck in neck when it comes to the performance. However, Netflix content is displayed in HDR on the iPad and in SDR on the Galaxy Tab S5e. It is possible that this one feature makes the content look slightly richer on the iPad display. And I say slightly because if you don't know what to look for, you’d pick any one display over the other based on the content being played.

Coming back to the Galaxy Tab S5e display alone, we tried using the display under direct sunlight and it works quite well. You can increase the brightness of the device a little more for use under direct sunlight. Apart from movies with dark sequences, the tablet was very easily usable under direct sunlight. When it comes to everyday tasks like reading emails, reading a book, playing games or browsing the Internet, the display worked without any complaints. It was reflective, but nothing that can't be taken care off by moving it around a bit.

Performance

When it comes to everyday performance, like checking mail, browsing the Internet, watching videos, etc. the tablet performed impressively without any stutters. It even works very well when you use apps in split screen. The only underwhelming experience is typing on the touch screen. I wish each letter had a tad more real estate in landscape mode to give users a comfortable typing experience. If you are someone who will type a lot, then investing in the keyboard accessory will be a wise decision.

When it comes to gaming too, the tablet will run any game you throw at it with ease. From graphically heavy games like Asphalt and PUBG to simple puzzle and shooting games, it all worked like a charm. If you are one that will use the camera, then know that it won’t replace your smartphone camera. But for video calls, it can get the job done well. No worries.

Since we’ve said the performance of the tablet isn’t as powerful as the Tab S4 or the iPad Air, below are some benchmarks for you to check out.

Coming to the audio, this is one place where the Galaxy Tab S5e trumps the iPad Air (2019). It has 4 speakers, unlike the Air which has 2, both firing in the same direction. So with the Galaxy Tab S5e, we have better channel separation which is quite easily noticeable when you have objects flying around the screen like in a dog fight or bullets whizzing around during an action sequence. Mission Impossibles bike chase sequence is one good example of this.

Overall, the audio is clean, dialogues are clear and the speakers are loud enough that you don't need to huddle around a table to watch content on it. You can show your friends a movie trailer in a slightly noisy environment without any trouble.

Samsung DeX

You can switch between DeX and normal tablet mode with the tap of a button in the drop-down notification window. When in DeX mode, you get a desktop like an experience which works well, but isn’t perfect. Resizing windows, multitasking, watching a video while typing a mail, all can be done. But with too many apps open, the device start to lag. Another thing to note is that even though you can use your finger for tasks like moving windows around, resizing windows, etc. you will miss a mouse. You can connect a Bluetooth mouse to the device if you want. You can use alt + tab to change tabs and some desktop-like keyboard shortcuts make desktop-like work viable. If you prefer a windows touch screen over the mouse/trackpad then you will be able to work with Dex. Otherwise, you will miss the presence of a mouse.

Overall, the DeX experience is a move in the right direction for those that want a desktop-like experience to be a part of their tablet. But you still need better hardware under the hood, like the Galaxy Tab S4 to get a butter smooth experience from it.

Build and Design

Slim, elegant and well-built are the first things that will come to mind when you see the Galaxy Tab S5e. The tablet doesn't have an all-glass back like its sibling, the Galaxy Tab S4 and I personally like that. It ensures a little more durability for fickle fingered people like me. The back has a gunmetal coloured finish very reminiscent of the iPad. Placed side by side with the iPad Air, one would think it is from the same family.

The 10.5-inch form factor is a tried-and-tested one so as far as ergonomics are concerned, you will feel right at home. When playing games or watching videos, the device is comfortable to use.

Moving to port placement, (holding the tablet in portrait mode) you have the power button cum fingerprint sensor and the volume rocker on the right, along with a tray for the SIM card and the microSD card slot. On the left, we have the keyboard dock connector. Unlike the iPad Air, the galaxy tab S5e forgoes the headphones jack which I personally miss. At the bottom, you have a USB-C port. The tablet also has 4 speakers (2 on either side when held in landscape mode) which are a big boon in entertainment when compared to the iPad Air. The rear of the tablet has the camera in the upper left corner and the front has it bang in the centre of the top bezel. Overall, it's pretty standard placement of cameras for a tablet. However, there is one ergonomic qualm I have with the device - the placement of the fingerprint sensor. This placement is just like we’ve seen on the Galaxy S10e and while it is ergonomic on a phone, it isn't so on the tablet. Reaching for it feels a little out of place and I found myself reaching for the pin to unlock the device more than the fingerprint. Not to mention that when you put it in the keyboard case, it becomes a little more difficult to unlock the device in a single touch. Using the fingerprint sensor on this device takes some getting used to. Although it must be noted that the Galaxy Tab S5e houses a fingerprint sensor in a day and age where the Tab S4 lacks one.

Overall, the build of the tablet is good and premium. The tablet is slim and without investing in a case to prop it up at an angle, typing in landscape mode is a tad annoying. The size is good enough for playing games and watching videos. In fact, I didn’t face any issues while watching videos on the device during a cab ride, with the tablet placed on my lap.

Keyboard dock

The keyboard dock is sold separately and it has the same problems that two-in-one laptops have. But let's get the good out of the way first. It snaps on magnetically to the tablet in one click and is held together quite well. The Apple smart cover for the iPad is quite flimsy in comparison, especially as far as snapping on is concerned. But just like the smart cover, the Keyboard dock for the Galaxy Tab S5e can be propped up in one position only. It makes it tough to prop the tablet when you have a direct light source above you.

Coming to the keyboard itself, it is a lot better to type on than the keyboard cover found on the iPad Pro. The keys have a decent amount of travel and apart from the cramped number pad, the keyboard is decent to type on. A part of this review was typed on the tablet, so it works well for those looking to write on the go and want a thin and light typing device with a dedicated keyboard and don't want a full sized laptop. I would, however, have appreciated a dedicated home, and back button on the keyboard rather than resorting to the touch screen. It doesn't feel natural. There is a dedicated search button that brings up the google assistant and for some strange reason, there is a dedicated button to bring up the on-screen keyboard. Why would I need that when I have a physical keyboard?

Now to the worst part about the keyboard. Unlike the iPad Pro keyboard that flips in to give you a clean grip when holding the tablet, the Galaxy Tab S5e keyboard lazily turns and lets you feel the keyboard when holding the tablet. This isn't exactly comfortable and can get a little annoying especially if you want to watch something by holding the tablet in your hand for a long time. It's just like a 2-in-1 laptop where the keyboard can be felt when you prop the laptop in tablet mode.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e has a 7040mAh battery - in line with what we saw on the Galaxy Tab S4. In our battery benchmark with the display on full brightness, the tablet died in a little over 6 hours. However, in real-world usage, it can last much longer. Playback from streaming services saw a drop of about 13 per cent in one hour based on the streaming service. Local playback saw about 8 per cent drop per hour. Keeping the brightness on auto, and you have a device that can last about 10 to 12 hours of content consumption with ease. The battery life will vary based on usage and some productivity scenarios may see it drain faster

Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e?

Look at it this way. It is cheaper than the iPad and offers near par performance as far as basic everyday work is concerned including content consumption, gaming, social media and some productivity. But the Snapdragon 670 is nowhere near as powerful as the A12 on the iPad Air. You can run some intense photo editing and Augmented Reality apps on the iPad which will bring the Galaxy Tab S5e to its knees. If you are looking for a tablet to replace your laptop for basic work and entertainment or are looking to get a device with good battery life for use on the go, then yes you can consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. For the professional using dedicated apps like Photoshop, the iPad Air is a better choice if the iPad Pro is out of your budget

The Farmer Who Sold His Cow So His Daughter Could Study

The Farmer Who Sold His Cow So His Daughter Could Study

A farmer sold his cow so his daughter could continue her education.

A farmer from Himachal Pradesh who sold his cow so his daughter could continue online classes has received an outpouring of praise and offers of help on social media. On Tuesday, popular page 'Humans of Bombay' shared the story of the farmer, who has not been named. In his interview with 'Humans of Bombay', the farmer revealed that when the pandemic forced schools to move their classes online, he borrowed money from his friends so he could buy a smartphone for his 10-year-old daughter.

"Money has always been tight- I make 5000 Rupees each month, sometimes less, but I ensured that both my children went to school," he said, adding that he had to drop out of school in eight grade but wanted his seven-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter to get the best education possible.

When his daughter's school started online classes, he did not have a smartphone. The schoolgirl initially went around their village, borrowing smartphones from people so she could study. "She would spend half the day wandering around the entire village, trying to find someone to borrow a phone from. Soon, people started to get fed up," the farmer said.

Seeing her despondent, he decided to arrange for a smartphone. "I spoke to a few of my friends, explained my situation and they lent me 5000 Rupees!" he said. The farmer and his wife then surprised their children with a smartphone. "My daughter took it and immediately started studying; she's the one who has the phone most of the time. I was so happy that her studies weren't compromised," he said.

After a few weeks, however, the farmer's friends wanted him to return the money he had borrowed. He would have had to sell the smartphone to arrange for the money, but the thought of breaking his daughter's heart forced him to make the difficult decision of selling his cow instead.

"I did what I had to - I sold my cow and paid my debts, even though we're dependent on selling cow milk to survive," he said. He added that it was his daughter's dream to become a doctor and concluded his interview with the conviction that she would, one day, definitely wear a doctor's white lab coat.

The farmer's story has touched hearts on social media, garnering 14,000 'likes' on Facebook and more than 52,000 'likes' on Instagram.

In the comments section, several people asked for the farmer's contact details so they could offer help, while others praised him.

"Such an inspiring story, I'm sure they would need plenty of help going forward too. If Humans of Bombay could publish more of such stories and enable us to help them directly (I would love to be able to support this family or another in need) then I'm sure lots would come forward to do their bit," wrote one commenter.

"Humans of Bombay, how do I help this wonderful father educate his children and get his cow back?" another asked.

The country’s economic recovery is likely to be gradual as the country is still reeling from the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19), RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday.

Addressing the FICCI Executive Committee Meeting, the central bank chief said that the economic recovery is not fully entrenched. He added that the GDP data for the first quarter (Q1) was a telling reflection of how COVID-19 affected the economy.

Meanwhile, the Parliament's monsoon session is underway, which started on Monday with unprecedented precautions against the coronavirus, including staggered sittings of both houses and social distancing between MPs.

The Bihar government has set the wheels in motion for the construction of a new complex of the Patna Collectorate, days after the high court lifted an interim stay on the demolition of the historic landmark, dealing a blow to a sustained bid by citizens for its preservation. Process to Pick Next Party President Set in Motion With Constitution of Election Authority: Congress

On whether the organisational changes had Rahul Gandhi's imprint, Surjewala said Rahul Gandhi was unanimously elected in an AICC session, but post the 2019 verdict he chose to take moral responsibility and resigned.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 10:30 AM IST

The Congress on Saturday said that Sonia Gandhi has made organisational changes after authorisation from the party's working committee and has set in motion the process of election of the next party president by constituting an election authority. Asked about the organisational changes made by Gandhi and the subsequent reported statements by some leaders who had written to her over party reforms, Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said he had not seen a single statement by any Congress leader on the issue and cannot comment on that.

On whether the organisational changes had Rahul Gandhi's imprint, he said Rahul Gandhi was unanimously elected in an AICC session, but post the 2019 verdict he chose to take moral responsibility and resigned. "Crores and crores of Congress workers and unanimously all leaders including the ones that you mentioned in the meeting of the CWC expressed complete confidence in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and in fact some of them urged him to take over as Congress president," he said at an online press conference.

However, he said, it was not for him to comment on the issue at this juncture "for Congress president Sonia Gandhi has constituted an election authority and has set the process of election of the President in motion". On being pressed further on the issue, Surjewala recalled Sonia Gandhi's remarks where she had said that "'our job is to fight the Modi government and its anti-people policies and not fight with each other' and all of us are working towards that single minded goal, like Arjuna used to only look at the eye of the fish".

To queries on the organisational changes made by Sonia Gandhi, he said change is part of a continuous process and in one voice the Congress Working Committee had decided that she should make all organisational changes afresh, based on which she made these changes. "A lot of new people have got a chance, many old people of the party have got a chance, a lot of colleagues who were already there have got more strength to continue serving the organisation," he said.

In a major organisational reshuffle, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday dropped Ghulam Nabi Azad, Motilal Vora, Ambika Soni and Mallikarjun Kharge as AICC general secretaries, reconstituted the CWC and appointed P Chidambaram, Randeep Surjewala, Tariq Anwar and Jitendra Singh as its regular members. Gandhi also formed a six-member special committee to assist her in organisational matters, apart from reconstituting the central election authority of the AICC with Madhusudan Mistry as its chairman, Rajesh Misra, Krishna Byre Gowda, S Jothimani and Arvinder Singh Lovely as its members.

Gandhi, 73, left for the United States on Saturday for a routine medical check-up, sources close to her said. She would return in the last week of September and would miss more than half of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

She is accompanied by Rahul Gandhi, who is expected to return within a week, they said. Her medical check-up was overdue and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sources said.

She had cleared the Congress' organisational restructuring before departing for her medical check-up.

Integrated Townships: COVID-19 brings their advantages to the fore

0
22
Building

During a pandemic like COVID-19, there is a strong rationale for living in integrated townships. These self-sustaining, compact urban ecosystems are now more than just lifestyle upgrades – they provide the kind of controlled environment that makes a big difference during such an outbreak. Gated communities offer security, but integrated townships let residents get through the prolonged siege-like situation of a pandemic with a much lower impact on the quality of life.

Anuj Puri

Anuj Puri, Chairman – ANAROCK Property Consultants, says, “Going forward, dispersed offices and flexible workplace policies around WFH will spur housing demand on city peripheries, beyond the city-center hotspots. This will lead to higher demand for large township developments which, because of their massive size, have been developed on the peripheries. However, they account for a mere 2 pc of all housing supply since 2010, so their numbers are currently inadequate to meet the coming demand.”

Constrained supply

Integrated townships began their Indian innings primarily as a lifestyle statement – the conveniences and address value come at an added cost which does not appeal to budget home seekers. The subtle luxury quotient, a function of the surrounding infrastructure rather than in individual properties, resulted in townships catering to a niche rather than to the masses. Also, very few developers have the expertise and resources to deploy integrated townships. As a result, the supply of integrated townships remained restricted even as other formats proliferated.Integrated Townships As on date, the top 7 cities have just over 101 township projects (launched since 2010 till date), accounting for around 3.16 lakh housing units. (Besides mixed-use developments, townships with more than 2,000 housing units are also considered).

This is only a minuscule 2 pc share of overall housing projects launched during this period. Clearly, this is a hugely under-served segment whose underpinning relevance and importance has been emphatically brought to light by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Out of the 101 projects, nearly 57 are large purely residential projects with some basic facilities like a retail shop, pharmacy, salon, and some form of entertainment. The remaining 44 are full-fledged mixed-use developments with dedicated retail, entertainment, education, commercial, health, and residential spaces. NCR and MMR have the highest saturation of townships.

“Beyond superior conveniences and security, townships offer a sense of community which is extremely important in times like the coronavirus pandemic,” says Puri. “Living in such projects also helps work-from-home professionals to maintain optimum productivity while being assured of their and their families’ health and safety. Many townships even offer a walk-to-work option.”

Apart from the expertise to plan and execute such large projects, integrated townships also require gargantuan investments in capital, land, and other resources. Resultantly, integrated townships will largely remain the purview of Grade A developers.

Integrated Township Supply (Completed & Ongoing)

  • NCR42 township projects with approx. 1.33 lakh residential units. 22 of these (with 55,000 units) are mixed-use developments; the remaining 20 projects are exclusively residential with over 78,000 units.
  • MMR17 township projects, of which 8 are mixed-use and 9 exclusively residential. Together, they account for over 63,500 homes.
  • Bengaluru10 mega township projects with 35,230 units in all, of which 3 are mixed-use and the remaining 7 are large, well-equipped residential communities.
  • Hyderabad9 township projects, of which only 1 is mixed-use and 8 are purely residential. Together, they have more than 21,600 units.
  • Pune and Kolkata8 large township projects each, with approx. 19,700 and 27,150 homes respectively. Interestingly, Pune has more mixed-use developments (5) than purely residential townships (3) while Kolkata has 2 mixed-use developments and 6 purely residential townships.
  • Chennai7 township projects with nearly 16,200 residential units, of which 3 are mixed-use developments and 4 are purely residential.

The USP

The USPs

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the most important features of townships probably are their considerable distance from mid-city infection hot zones and their superior security and sanitation. It has also been confirmed that the virus is more easily transmitted in areas polluted by excessive traffic. The reduced and regulated traffic and large, air-cleansing green zones in integrated townships are therefore a compelling argument. In townships where they are available, schools, shopping and healthcare nearby are distinct advantages. Multi-level security arrangements can ensure very effective segregation from surrounding areas, as well as contact tracing if the need arises.

However, the main value-adds in such projects predate the pandemic. Most townships are well-planned layouts where optimum space is utilized. Landscaped gardens, jogging tracks and dedicated play areas enhance the overall liveability quotient. Integrated townships also tend to have advanced waste management and rainwater harvesting.

Opening up

Given the nature of the times, we may soon see more such projects being announced. Various government and nodal development agencies have already incorporated various townships-focused changes in their city planning, such as better road connectivity, utilities supply and sewage.

Some of the more promising areas for future development include Kalyan-Bhiwandi and Boisar in MMR, Sohna in Gurugram, North Bengaluru, Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, Gahunje in Pune, and West Hyderabad, among others.

These locations meet the most important criteria of being well-connected and having enough contiguous land parcels to accommodate integrated townships.

Egypt Building Highways Near Pyramids, Conservationists Flabbergasted

Egypt Building Highways Near Pyramids, Conservationists "Flabbergasted"

Critics say they could cause irrevocable damage to one of the world's most important heritage sites.

Egypt Building Highways Near Pyramids, Conservationists 'Flabbergasted'

Superhighway cuts across desert within a view of the Red Pyramid in Egypt.

Memphis:

Egypt is building two highways across the pyramids plateau outside Cairo, reviving and expanding a project that was suspended in the 1990s after an international outcry.

The Great Pyramids, Egypt's top tourist destination, are the sole survivor of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the plateau is a UNESCO world heritage site.

The highways are part of an infrastructure push spearheaded by Egypt's powerful military and championed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is building a new capital city to ease the population pressure on Cairo, home to 20 million people.

The northern highway will cross the desert 2.5 km (1.6 miles) south of the Great Pyramids. The southern one will pass between the Step Pyramid of Saqqara - the oldest one - and the Dahshur area, home to the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid.

Each highway appears to be about eight lanes wide.

Critics say they could cause irrevocable damage to one of the world's most important heritage sites. Authorities say they will be built with care and improve transport links, connecting new urban developments and bypassing central Cairo's congestion.

"The roads are very, very important for development, for Egyptians, for inside Egypt," said Mostafa al-Waziri, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities. "Know that we take good care of our antiquities sites everywhere in Egypt."

Some Egyptologists and conservationists say the highways will disrupt the integrity of the pyramids plateau, pave over unexplored archaeological sites, generate pollution that could corrode monuments, produce litter and expose closed areas packed with hidden archaeological treasures to looting.

Al-Waziri said existing roads were much closer to the pyramids and carried a lot of tourist buses. "That is why we are doing a lot of development," he said, noting plans to use electric tourist buses within the plateau to avoid pollution.

MEMPHIS

The highways, which will dissect the plateau into three, will cross a section of ancient Memphis, one of the world's biggest and most influential cities for almost 3,000 years.

"I was flabbergasted by what I saw," said former senior UNESCO official Said Zulficar, who visited a portion of the southern highway two months ago. "All the work that I had done nearly 25 years ago is now being put into question."

Zulficar led a successful campaign in the mid 1990s to suspend construction of the northern highway, a branch of Cairo's first ringroad. UNESCO said it had requested detailed information on the new plan several times and asked to send a monitoring mission.

The state press centre referred a Reuters request for further comment on the plans to a communications advisor of the tourism and antiquities ministry, who could not be reached.

Construction began well over a year ago in desert areas largely out of public sight and became more visible around March, Egyptologists and Google Earth images indicate.

On a recent visit, Reuters journalists saw heavy machinery clearing fields and building bridges and junctions along both highways. Hundreds of uprooted date palms lay in piles.

The southern highway is a part of Cairo's second ringroad that will connect the western satellite city of Sixth of October to the new capital city east of Cairo via 16 km of desert on the pyramids plateau, farmland and a corner of Memphis.

In 2014, the World Bank estimated congestion in the greater Cairo area cut about 3.6 percentage points off Egypt's output.

"The road cuts through archaeologically unexplored cemeteries of the little-known 13th Dynasty, in walking distance of the pyramids of Pepi II and Khendjer and the Mastabat el-Fara'un", said an Egyptologist who knows the area.

The person was among six Egyptologists Reuters spoke to. Most of them declined to be named for fear of losing clearance to handle antiquities.

One said caches of statues and blocks with hieroglyphs had been unearthed since highway construction began; the antiquities authority said on its Facebook page these had been discovered on nearby private property.

Memphis, said to have been founded in about 3,000 BC when Egypt was united into a single country, was eclipsed but not abandoned when Alexander the Great moved the capital to Alexandria in 331 BC.

It extended more than 6 square kilometres, the Nile valley's largest ancient settlement site.

The new road comes close to the ancient city's commercial districts, its harbour walls and the former site of an ancient Nilometer, used to measure the height of the annual flood, said David Jeffreys, a British Egyptologist who has been working on Memphis for the Egypt Exploration Society since 1981.

It also endangers a Roman wall that once bordered the Nile that Jeffreys said few people were aware of.

"Memphis has long been neglected, even by Egyptologists, as it is a complicated site to excavate," another Egyptologist said. "But it is enormously rich, bursting with temples, archives, administrative buildings and industrial areas."

Authorities charge Uber backup driver involved in fatal self-driving crash

The case is still yet to be resolved

Polestar accelerates the shift to sustainable mobility, by making electric driving irresistible.

The backup safety driver that was behind the wheel of a self-driving Uber vehicle that crashed in 2018, killing a pedestrian, has been charged.

Officials said on Tuesday that driver Rafaela Vasquez was charged with negligent homicide on August 27 over the crash in Tempe that killed 49-year-old Elain Herzberg, the Associated Press reports. It was the first pedestrian fatality involving a self-driving vehicle.

The charge comes in light of allegations that Vasquez was distracted moments before the self-driving Uber she was monitoring struck Herzberg who was crossing the road.

[Read: Another UK escooter trial is on hold because people are breaking the rules]

Vasquez told investigators that she didn’t use her phone before the accident. While you can’t see a phone in the video evidence that depicts the moments before the crash, it’s clear her eyes were not entirely on the road.

Warning: The footage is edited, but viewer discretion is still advised.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigating the case found Vasquez failed to watch the road sufficiently as she watched TV on her phone, which resulted in the crash.

Investigators also cited other contributing factors including: “Uber’s inadequate safety procedures and ineffective oversight of its drivers, Herzberg’s decision to cross the street and not use a crosswalk, and the Arizona Department of Transportation’s insufficient oversight of autonomous vehicle testing.”

Despite the above reported contributing factors, Uber is not being charged.

Vasquez pleaded not guilty during Tuesday’s hearing and now faces further investigation and a trial on February 11, 2021.

India Shreds Pakistan At UN: Their Prime Minister Admits Training Terrorists For Jammu And Kashmir

"Their PM Admits Training Terrorists For J&K": India Shreds Pak At UN

The diplomat said that it was not surprising that other relevant multilateral institutions have been raising serious concerns on Pakistan's failure to stop terror financing.

'Their PM Admits Training Terrorists For J&K': India Shreds Pak At UN

India also slammed Pakistan for abusing various HRC mechanisms (Representational)

Geneva:

India on Tuesday described Pakistan as an "epicenter of terrorism" and said no one deserves unsolicited lecture on human rights from Islamabad that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities including Hindus, Sikhs and Christians.

Exercising the Right of Reply to the statements made by Pakistan at the 45th session of Human Rights Council (HRC), the Indian representative said that it has become habitual for Pakistan to malign India with false and fabricated narratives for its self-serving malicious purposes.

"Neither India nor others deserve this unsolicited lecture on human rights from a country that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities, is an epicenter of terrorism, has the distinction of providing pensions to individuals on UN Sanctions list and has a Prime Minister who proudly admits training tens of thousands of terrorists to fight in Jammu and Kashmir," the Indian diplomat said.

The diplomat said that it was not surprising that other relevant multilateral institutions have been raising serious concerns on Pakistan's failure to stop terror financing and lack of effective actions against all terror entities in Pakistan.

Highlighting the nefarious designs of Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the diplomat said, "the mass influx of outsiders has whittled down the number of Kashmiris to an insignificant number in Pakistan occupied parts of Indian Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh."

"In its zeal to reassert its theocratic ideology, it has ensured that ethnic and religious minorities have no future through systematic persecution, blasphemy laws, forced conversions, targeted killings, sectarian violence and faith-based discrimination," the diplomat said.

"Thousands of Sikh, Hindus and Christian minority women and girls have been subjected to abductions, forced marriages and conversions in Pakistan."

On the plight of people in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, the Indian diplomat said, "Not a single day has gone by when a family in Balochistan doesn't find its members picked up or kidnapped by the security forces of Pakistan."

"Pakistan does well when it comes to intimidation and attacks against journalists, human rights defenders and political dissidents in particular by its state machinery. It is not without a reason that Pakistan has been highlighted by international organizations as a country where journalists are slain and their killers go scot free," the diplomat said.

India also slammed Pakistan for "abusing various HRC mechanisms and platforms for raising issues, which are extraneous to the mandate of the HRC and which relate to internal affairs of India, with a view to distract the attention of the international community from serious human rights violations committed by it against its own people, including in Indian territories occupied by it."

India also rejected the reference made by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.

"The OIC has no locus standi to comment on internal affairs of India. The OIC has allowed itself to be misused by Pakistan to subverse its own Agenda. It's for the members of the OIC to decide if it is in their interests to allow Pakistan to do so," the Indian representative said.

India also advised Turkey to refrain from commenting on its internal affairs and develop a better understanding of the democratic practices.

A Walkout that Boomeranged? Congress' Belligerent Stand on China Issue Not Finding Takers among Oppn

The Congress walkout on Tuesday after the suo moto statement by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Parliament is being seen as a missed point.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 6:35 PM IST

Walkouts from Parliament are made to make a political point. However, some walkouts miss to make the point and may, in fact, boomerang. The Congress walkout on Tuesday after the suo moto statement by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is being seen as a missed point.

Sources say that just before Singh was scheduled to speak, some Congress MPs reached out to few leaders of opposition parties like the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) to also stage a walkout. When they refused to do so, the Congress leaders made their way out alone.

It is a catch-22 situation for the Grand Old Party. It does not want to be seen as being against the government on national security issues. Nor does it want to add to a perception which has been built up against the Congress that it indulges in a strategy and makes comment that are lapped up either by China or Pakistan and used to their benefit. In the past, many in Pakistan and Chinese media have quoted Rahul Gandhi and this has been used by the BJP to make the point that Congress feels more for its opponents than its own country.

Rahul Gandhi’s aggressive stand against the government on the China issue has also forced the party to be belligerent. So the Congress is in a dilemma. It does not want to be seen as the lone party taking on the government and questioning it over China and its foreign policy. It wants to be seen as a consensus voice over the issue. The problem for the Congress is that other opposition parties understand its pitfalls. The encounter with the Chinese army in the Galwan Valley, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had, in fact, issued a public statement that they should be seen as being one with the government on this matter.

Even the Trinamool Congress which is fighting the BJP in Bengal, has stayed away from this China rhetoric. It refused to accede to the Congress’ request to walkout on Tuesday. Besides, the Congress has recently burnt its bridges with the TMC by appointing a known Mamata Banerjee baiter Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury as party chief in the state.

The Congress is also caught in the dilemma of being seen as the lone alternative to the BJP on a muscular foreign policy issue. The part-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) 1 and 2 was badgered by the BJP and Narendra Modi as being soft on terror.

The narrative was so built that eventually in stark contrast to Modi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh came across as a weak man. The Congress feels the confrontation with China could be a payback time to the BJP.

However, unfortunately for the Congress, it is being forced to ‘ekla chalo’ (walk alone). And, in this, it has no choice as no other opposition party wants to walk by its side on the China issue.

Top GOP Senator Says Fed Nominee Judy Shelton Short On Votes

A top Senate Republican on Tuesday said conservative economist Judy Shelton does not have the votes to be confirmed to one of two vacancies on the Federal Reserve board.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:03 AM IST

WASHINGTON: A top Senate Republican on Tuesday said conservative economist Judy Shelton does not have the votes to be confirmed to one of two vacancies on the Federal Reserve board.

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, who holds the No. 2 spot in the Senate Republican leadership, said Shelton’s nomination will not be brought up until the votes are there.

We’re still working it, he told reporters after a weekly Republican lunch. She’s a priority for the White House. It’s the Federal Reserve. It’s important, so obviously we want to get it done. But we’re not going to bring it up until we have the votes to confirm her.”

Shelton’s nomination cleared the Senate Banking Committee earlier this year on a straight party-line vote of 13-12, with Democrats opposing the nomination. They contend that her views are too far out of the mainstream for the seven-member Fed board, which currently has two vacancies.

President Donald Trump nominated Shelton and Christopher Waller, the research director at the Federal Reserve’s regional bank in St. Louis, for two vacancies. If both win confirmation, the president will have installed six of the seven board members including elevating Republican Jerome Powell, originally an Obama selection, to be Fed chairman.

While Waller is viewed as a credible choice, Shelton has proven controversial because of her past views, including advocating a return to the gold standard, which most mainstream economists see as unworkable.

At her confirmation hearing, Shelton said she supports the Fed’s independence from political meddling but she defended the sharp attacks Trump has frequently launched against the central bank and Powell for the Fed’s handling of interest rates.

Trump has had trouble filling recent vacancies on the Fed board, with conservative economist Stephen Moore and the late Herman Cain, a former GOP presidential candidate, withdrawing from consideration after opposition surfaced.

A man boarded a bus using a snake as a face covering.
The commuter and his reptilian mask, which was wrapped around his neck and mouth, were seen on a bus from Swinton to Manchester on Monday.
One passenger, said she thought the passenger was wearing a "funky mask" until she spotted it slithering over hand rails.
Transport bosses in Greater Manchester confirmed a snake was not a valid face covering.
The eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, said she found the incident "really funny", adding the animal did not seem to be bothering any of her fellow passengers.
She said: "No-one batted an eyelid."

Using a face covering on public transport is mandatory, except for children under the age of 11 or those who are exempt for health or disability reasons.
A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: "Government guidance clearly states that this needn't be a surgical mask, and that passengers can make their own or wear something suitable, such as a scarf or bandana.
"While there is a small degree of interpretation that can be applied to this, we do not believe it extends to the use of snakeskin - especially when still attached to the snake."

NEP Suggests Revolutionary Changes in Education Sector, Says Rajnath Singh

This policy suggests many revolutionary changes in school and higher education leading to the holistic development of students, he stated.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 10:05 PM IST

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said the new National Education Policy (NEP) suggests many revolutionary changes in school and higher education and it will lead to the holistic development of students.

Singh held a virtual interaction with the volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) on creating awareness about the new NEP.

The new NEP approved by the Union Cabinet in July replaces the National Policy on Education framed in 1986 and is aimed at paving the way for 'transformational reforms' in schools and higher education systems to make India a 'global knowledge superpower'.

"The New Education Policy is the first policy in Indian history in which a multi-pronged and multi-stakeholder consultative process was undertaken which included online, grassroots and national level deliberations," Singh said on Twitter.

This policy suggests many revolutionary changes in school and higher education leading to the holistic development of students, he stated.

"The National Education Policy will fulfil the vision of Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi to create a 'self-reliant India'," he noted.

Along with the volunteers, the virtual interaction also had coordinators of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Singh said, adding that it took place under the Shikshak Parv initiative.

Teaching up to Class 5 in mother tongue or regional language, lowering the stakes of board exams, a single regulator for higher education institutions, except for law and medical colleges, and common entrance tests for universities are part of the sweeping reforms in the new NEP.

Replacing the 10+2 structure of school curricula with a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to age groups 3-8, 8-11, 11-14 and 14-18 years respectively, scrapping M.Phil programmes and implementing common norms for private and public higher education institutions are among other salient features of the new policy.

    Chennai:

Punishment for offences against women and children, including causing deaths by demanding dowry, stalking and selling minors for prostitution, will be made more stringent in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister K Palaniswami announced in the Assembly on Wednesday.

Steps will be taken to bring amendments to the Indian Penal Code by taking the Centre's nod to provide a higher level of punishment for offences against women and children, he said.

The proposed move is to ensure better safety and security for women and children, he said while making a statement in the House.

As per the proposal, the minimum punishment for dowry deaths will be 10 years from the present seven and for disrobing, the minimum sentence will be enhanced to five years from three now and the maximum punishment, ten years from seven.

Similarly, stalking, on a second or subsequent conviction will see a maximum of seven years imprisonment from the present five, Mr Palaniswami said.

Recommendation will be made to the Union government to enhance the maximum punishment for selling and buying minors for prostitution to life imprisonment from 10 years now and for insertion of a minimum sentence of seven years, he said.

"I would like to resolutely say that Amma's government will always be a fortress of protection to women and children," he said.

Explaining the ongoing initiatives, he said those continuously involved in crimes against women and children were being detained under the Goondas Act.

A separate 'Crimes against women and children unit' was created in the Tamil Nadu police for the first time in the country on March 6, 2019 and it continued to function efficiently, he said.
