The Indian Railways is one of the most popular railway networks in the world, with a number of trains running every day on tracks. While these trains are expected to be on time, they often get late due to some issue on the track or the weather conditions.

We often stay worried about checking the status of our trains and to know if it on time. Fortunately, all the information about checking a running train status is easily available on our mobile phones.

We can check the live running status of train through various travel websites like Yatra, Goibibo etc. But these websites are all linked through the official website of Indian Railways or IRCTC.

The ‘Live Train Running Status’ is a system created by Indian Railways to check the running status of trains on track. Passengers can also directly check it by using apps like IRCTC app and Railyatri.

The ways to check the train status is:

Step 1: Go to the IRCTC website

Step 2: Go on the option Trains

Step 3: Click on ‘Track your Train’

Step 4: Enter your train number through the option “Spot your train”

Another way is to go to Railyatri website or the app feature. On the home page, there is an option ‘train status’. Click on it from the train enquiry centre options. Then, enter your train number or name and click on the option ‘Search’.

The exact location of the train and its schedule can be checked using the ‘Railyatri app or its website.

Every information regarding your train will be available on the website, including the details of current train status, platform number on which the train is arriving, expected time of arrival, expected time of departure, upcoming station and all intermediate station information.

The passengers can also call up the railway enquiry number 139 or SMS to check the status of their train.

Timeline for start and completion of Ayodhya airport project depends on factors such as land acquisition, clearances, financial closure, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told the parliament.

478.1 Acres Needed For Ayodhya Airport Phase 1: Civil Aviation Minister

New Delhi:

The Airports Authority of India, AAI, has said it requires 478.1 acres land for phase 1 of the Ayodhya airport, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The state government has informed that they have earmarked Rs 525.92 crore for acquiring the land so far, he said, adding that the requirement is based on an assessment of the existing Ayodhya airport by AAI's multi-disciplinary team which visited the city in December last year.

"The pre-feasibilty study was done so the airport can handle wide-bodied aircrafts. The airport is suitable for development in two phases, with the expected rise in passenger traffic in Ayodhya," Mr Puri said, adding that the timeline for start and completion of the project depends on factors such as land acquisition, clearances, financial closure.

Last week, in an e-meeting with Mr Puri Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had extended his "full support" to all airport-related development work.

It is targeted that the Ayodhya Ram Temple, whose groundbreaking ceremony was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 5, can be completed by 2024.

The temple is likely to elevate Ayodhya as an international religious destination, and the Yogi Adityanath government plans to capitalize on this to generate employment by creating supporting infrastructure, including a new railway station and upgrading the national highway.

Despite dominating politics in north India for decades, Ayodhya had been a sleepy little town. As of now, it has one airstrip for use by VIPs.

Verdict

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, despite being a reliable device, isn't the best smartphone in the mid-range segment anymore. Xiaomi frankly borrowed a leaf out of OnePlus' book and refined the popular Redmi Note 5 Pro, and didn't really upgrade it. And in the mid-range segment where loyalties shift with a bump in megapixels or RAM, the Redmi Note 6 Pro could be threatened by other, more powerful devices in that category. Read on to find out why.

Redmi Note 6 Pro detailed review

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro comes just eight months after the launch of its predecessor, the Redmi Note 5 Pro. In a recent IDC report, Xiaomi remained in top of the Indian smartphone market and grew by an astonishing 27 percent. The chief drivers of the growth were the affordable Redmi 5A and the Redmi Note 5 Pro. When the Note 5 Pro  launched back in February 2018, it set a benchmark for performance in the mid-range segment by introducing the Snapdragon 636 alongside 6 gigs of RAM. No wonder it sold like hot cakes.

With the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, Xiaomi has done something that OnePlus is known to do. Xiaomi refreshed it’s best-selling offering in a short span of time, improving upon the usability with new software-based features, while leaving out a notable hardware upgrade. While that has worked out well for OnePlus so far in the high-end segment, the mid-range category is a whole different story. With the likes of the Realme 2 Pro, the Moto One Power, and Xiaomi’s own Mi A2 for company in that segment, the Redmi Note 6 Pro has a tough road ahead to glory.

Will its follow-up, the Redmi Note 6 Pro live up to the same hype? More importantly, is it still the high performer? Let’s find out.

Design

The Redmi Note 6 Pro is basically the old Note 5 Pro, but with a notch cut-out in the display. As ugly as the notch looks, Xiaomi gave in to the growing demand of a larger, bezel-less display and the notch was the only way to give the people what they wanted. It doesn’t really help things here as the notch is rather wide and offers little space on either sides for icons and notifications. It’s also quite pesky and refuses to go if you’re playing a game like PubG unless you manually turn it off. The notch is present while you’re reading an article and but not when you’re watching a video on YouTube.

Hello notch, my old friend!

Xiaomi’s design philosophy was once appreciated and even copied across the segment. One of the primary proponents of the metal-body design in the price-range, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series popularised the design cues that are now present in almost all Xiaomi phones in the budget and mid-range segment. The company does experiment with other materials like ceramic in its flagship products and even kevlar like it did in the Poco F1. I can safely say the metal body design now looks plain boring. Heck, it’s now difficult to tell one Xiaomi phone apart from the other if you’re looking at them from the back. Despite that, one has to admit that these metal-bodied phones are anyday more durable than your glass-sandwich ones even though the latter looks much, much better. You’re anyway going to slap a case on it and if that’s the case, there’s no point calling Xiaomi out for using a recurring design if it’s made to last. But then, the Redmi Note 5 Pro unit we had received for review, doesn’t work all that well now. The power button on the right needs to be pressed harder to have it register. Hopefully, the Redmi Note 6 Pro has better internal construction and durability.

The side bulges are the only thing distinctive in the design

While there’s hardly any major difference in the design of the Redmi Note 6 Pro, Xiaomi did introduce slightly curved edges on the back, with sides that bulge out from the body. It does help in gripping the phone better. The rounded corners also doesn’t let the phone dig into the palm. The dual-camera unit on the back is aligned vertically on the top left corner with the fingerprint sensor located centrally, right where the index finger can reach. The Redmi Note 6 Pro also shaved off the bezels from below, but only by a hair and unless you’re comparing the Note 6 Pro against the Note 5 Pro side-by-side, there’s no way to tell. It’s quite a big bezel though and phones like the Honor 8X are honestly a better alternative if a bezel-less display is what you’re looking for in a phone.

I have mixed feelings about the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s design. At the fag end of the year, after using a bunch of Xiaomi devices that look all the same, I’ve grown tired of the reiteration. However, it’s durable and can take more scratches and bumps than a glass-bodied phone, and that should be a priority in the mid-range segment.

Display

This is where the Redmi Note 6 Pro primarily differs from the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Note 6 Pro sports a larger 6.26-inch display that has an ugly notch on top, which is how Xiaomi increased the screen size without increasing the footprint of the phone. However, most of the extra screen real-estate is eaten up by the notch itself, and there’s hardly any space for the icons and notifications. The phone does offer the option to turn the notch off, but you have to do it manually by whitelisting apps. Videos are cut out in 16:9 aspect ratio by default and in apps like YouTube you can stretch it to 18:9 aspect ratio, but there will still be space left unused. The notch, like we have mentioned countless times, serves no purpose whatsoever, and should just go.

Colours on the Redmi Note 6 Pro are a little more vibrant

Apart from that, the panel on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is of a higher quality than it’s predecessor. While the brightness levels are more or less the same (500 lux), colours are more vibrant and crisp on this one. The phone also offers options to tweak the white balance and colour temperature, but if you don’t know what you're doing, it’s better to maintain the default settings.

Performance and Software

This is where there’s hardly any difference in between the Redmi Note 6 Pro and it’s predecessor. All other Redmi Note phone have outperformed their respective predecessors in both benchmark tests and in real-world usage, but not this one. The Redmi Note 6 Pro relies on the same Snapdragon 636 SoC coupled with either 4GB or 6GB RAM,  along with 64GB storage. While the hardware configuration did excite us in the beginning of the year, by the end of 2018, it has become the standard. The Snapdragon 636, with it’s eight Kryo 260 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, is now aging quickly in the face of the Snapdragon 660 and the Kirin 710 being offered in the same price. The benchmark reports corroborate that.

On AnTuTu, the Redmi Note 6 Pro scored 116046 against the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s 112652, while the Realme 2 Pro with a Snapdragon 660 outscored both of them with 128430 and the Mi A2 trumped even that score with 128895. With similar price points, it becomes an easy choice if you’re looking for the best performance. On Geekbench Single Core and Multi Core tests that puts the CPU capabilities to test, the Redmi Note 6 Pro scored 1632 and 3233 respectively. The scores are once again in line with the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1  and here again, the Realme 2 Pro and the Mi A2 outperformed the Note 6 Pro with significantly higher scores. Even on 3DMark Slingshot, which tests the graphics processing capabilities of a device, the scores are similar for both the Redmi Note 6 Pro and it’s predecessor while the Mi A2 and the Realme 2 Pro outscored it by a long margin.

Based on the performance benchmark scores, it’s easy to see that the Redmi Note 6 Pro is not the best Xiaomi has to offer in that price. The Mi A2, with the Snapdragon 660 SoC and Android One-certified stock Android UI is what we would recommend, but if you’re married to the MIUI ecosystem, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is your next best option.

In real-world usage, the difference in performance isn’t all that much. The phone runs MIUI 10 out of the box and it’s optimised brilliantly for the phone. I didn’t face any lag or stutter while opening apps, or browsing the internet. However, the MIUI 10 interface on this phone is based on Android 8.1 Oreo and not the latest Android version. The new update brings gesture-based navigation and a new recent apps menu which is more card-based and arranged vertically. There’s support for autofill now, and a new app management system in Settings. More than that, MIUI feels fast and snappy with quick animations. The phone also boots quickly in around 30 seconds and apps launch slightly faster than the Note 5 Pro.

PubG Mobile is playable on this phone

Gaming on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is not the best experience. Most games will run although the graphically-demanding ones have to be played in low or medium settings. We played PubG Mobile on the Redmi Note 6 Pro with GameBench plugged in, and it recorded a stable FPS of 25. On flagships like the OnePlus 6T, you get around 40 FPS. While FPS count isn’t as much as what flagships offer, you do get stable gameplay with a variability index of 1 FPS on an average across five sessions we tested.

Courtesy: Gamebench

It goes without saying that even though this isn’t the fastest phone in the mid-range segment by any means, it’s fairly reliable and functional and will not let you down.

Camera

The Redmi Note 6 Pro while not offering any upgrades in raw performance, ups the ante when it comes to imaging. The phone’s dual camera unit at the back is better thanks to a bigger sensor with larger 1.4um pixels and a wider f/1.9 aperture as compared to that on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. On the front, inside that ugly notch are two sensors as well for selfies. The secondary sensor, like that on the rear, is used for calculating the depth of field.

12+5MP dual camera with bigger sensors and wider aperture

The notch houses dual front cameras

The camera on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is much better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s. In the day as well as in low-light, the Redmi Note 6 Pro takes images that are aesthetically pleasing. The camera relies on machine learning to recognise scenes across 32 categories including buildings, greenery, animals, people, etc. The AI mode is turned off by default and once you turn it on, it automatically recognises what you’re shooting within 1-2 seconds, but what it’s actually doing after recognising is not clear. In some instances, like shooting foliage, the greens do look more vibrant while low-light photos are processed using noise-reduction algorithms. But there’s no real clarity on what the AI is doing in reality. But to cut things short, the Redmi Note 6 Pro can take good photos that are sharp, vibrant and are visually appealing.

Camera Samples:

For more image samples, check out our Flickr Gallery.

We did an article after testing the camera extensively where we concluded the camera on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is more than capable of taking good photos, and is much better than that on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. But the Mi A2 trumps it in low-light with its pixel-binning technique. The Note 6 Pro applies the same technique for selfies with its 20+2MP front camera and the selfies do come out better in low-light because of it.

Further, the Note 6 Pro offers a new experience of portrait mode with dynamic bokeh. The blurred part warps into different shapes and if you ask me, I found them pretty cool. The phone also has various lighting effects and thankfully, Xiaomi’s implementation works much better than what the Realme 2 Pro or the Honor 8X offers.

Overall, the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s primary claim to fame is the camera. That’s where most of the work has gone in developing the phone.

Battery

What a day-and-a-half battery life looks like

The Redmi Note 6 Pro with its 4,000mAh battery offers the same one and a half day battery life like its predecessor. While we would have liked a bigger battery on the phone like the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, this one is more than enough to last the entire day. What’s disappointing is that Xiaomi offers a 5V charger out of the box that can’t fast-charge the device. It still uses a micro-USB port to charge even when the Mi A2, offered at nearly the same price has a USB-Type C port. The battery drain while playing PubG was around 15 percent for a full 30-minute session which isn’t all that bad considering other phones also have similar drainage pattern.

Bottomline

The Redmi Note 6 Pro, like we noted before is no longer a leader in the mid-range segment. With underwhelming performance, and a lacklustre design, it’s now a follower. It’s still offers good value for your money though, it’s just not the best, which is what we expect from Redmi’s Note lineup anyway. The Note 6 Pro somewhat redeems itself with good imaging prowess, but if you’re looking for an out-and-out performer, the Realme 2 Pro or the Honor 8X are phones you can consider. Or if you have to stick to Xiaomi and can make do with stock Android, the Mi A2 is a no-brainer. To be frank, I couldn’t find a legit reason to recommend the Note 6 Pro apart from the high value for money. In the mid-range segment where spec-sheets rule the roost and design slowly getting noticed, Xiaomi could have spent a few more months and followed up the popular Redmi Note 5 Pro with a worthy successor.

The British auction house Christie’s plans to sell the skeleton of one of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rexes in early October, the company said on Wednesday.

The dinosaur known as “STAN,”, approximately 67 million years old, was discovered in 1987 in South Dakota by amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison.

“He showed it to scientists at the time who unfortunately misidentified it as a triceratops,” James Hyslop, Christie’s head of Science and Natural History, told Reuters.

Triceratops remains are relatively common in the paleontological world, so the bones failed to garner much interest until Sacrison took them to the Black Hills Institute in South Dakota in 1992.

Researchers there “realized pretty quickly that they had something special in their hands,” said Hyslop. They recategorized STAN as a T. rex and mounted a new search to uncover the rest of the bones. They recovered 188 out of an estimated 300 total for any T. rex, Hyslop said.

Most T. rex skeletons are held by museums and private institutions. The auction is an opportunity for a private collector or institution to acquire the bones, Christie’s said.

STAN is 40 feet long and 13 feet high, Christie’s said. He is also notable for two fused vertebrae scientists have identified in his neck, suggesting the dinosaur broke his neck and survived during his lifetime. “The clue is in the name, the Tyrannosaurus rex,” Hyslop said. “He is the tyrant lizard king.”

Christie’s will display the dinosaur from Wednesday to mid-October at its Manhattan, New York location, the company said. It plans to book socially distant viewings for the public.

“We’ve got the skull displayed at ground level so that you can get really up close and personal with him and just see the serrations on his teeth,” Hyslop said. “His longest tooth is 11 inches long. It’s just terrifying to behold.”

Christie’s has estimated the value of the dinosaur at between $6 million and $8 million.

Hurricane Sally Hits US Gulf Coast, Threatens "Historic" Flooding

Hurricane Sally Hits US Gulf Coast, Threatens 'Historic' Flooding

Hurricane Sally was expected to pick up speed through Wednesday.

New Orleans:

Hurricane Sally barrelled into the US Gulf Coast early Wednesday, with forecasts of drenching rains that could provoke "historic" and potentially deadly flash floods.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Category 2 storm hit Gulf Shores, Alabama at about 4:45 am (0945 GMT), bringing maximum sustained winds of about 105 miles (165 kilometers) per hour.

"Historic life-threatening flooding likely along portions of the northern Gulf coast," the Miami-based center had warned late Tuesday, adding the hurricane could dump up to 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain in some areas.

About 75,000 homes in Alabama and Florida were already without power Tuesday evening, according to the Weather Channel, and video posted to social media appeared to show some areas had started to flood.

Sally had been at a crawling pace of two miles per hour, but was expected to pick up speed through Wednesday.

Alabama governor Kay Ivey told a press conference: "We are looking at record flooding, perhaps breaking historic levels. And with rising water comes a greater risk for loss of property and life.

"I urge you in the strongest way possible to evacuate if conditions permit and seek shelter elsewhere as possible today."

Ivey had declared a state of emergency Monday ahead of Sally's arrival.

President Donald Trump, speaking on "Fox & Friends," compared Sally to Hurricane Laura, which battered Texas and Louisiana, as well as the Caribbean, just a few weeks ago.

Record year

"This one is smaller but it's a little bit more direct, but we have it under control," he said. "We have it under watch very strongly."

Earlier, he tweeted: "We are fully engaged with State & Local Leaders to assist the great people of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi."

He urged people in the storm's path to "listen to State and Local Leaders."

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves had also declared a state of emergency ahead of the approaching storm.

He said the storm surge projections were "worrisome with anywhere from five to eight feet of coastal surge."

Governor John Bel Edwards of Louisiana, which is still recovering after Hurricane Laura made landfall in the state as a Category 4 storm, told residents Monday to be prepared.

"Be smart and be safe," he tweeted.

At a hurricane refuge in Pascagoula, a coastal town in eastern Mississippi, 50-year-old evacuee Cliton Shepherd was hoping the area could avoid the worst.

"I don't think the wind is going to hurt anything, hopefully. I pray that it doesn't. But that's the main thing, you know, hoping and praying for the best, that's all we can do."

There have been so many tropical storms in the Atlantic this year that the UN's World Meteorological Organization, which names the tempests, is about to run out of names for only the second time in history.

The last time was in 2005, the year Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

The latest Atlantic storm, Hurricane Paulette, pounded the island of Bermuda on Monday with Category 2 winds and heavy rains, according to the NHC.

The center also said Tropical Storm Teddy, currently positioned in the mid-Atlantic, was expected to become a hurricane.

PAOK Dump Benfica Out Of Champions League Qualifying

Former European Cup winners Benfica crashed out of the Champions League third qualifying round after a shock 21 defeat at PAOK Salonika on Tuesday as Serbia winger Andrija Zivkovic scored against his former club a week after leaving them.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 7:43 AM IST

SALONIKA, Greece: Former European Cup winners Benfica crashed out of the Champions League third qualifying round after a shock 2-1 defeat at PAOK Salonika on Tuesday as Serbia winger Andrija Zivkovic scored against his former club a week after leaving them.

Dynamo Kiev also advanced to the playoff round with a 2-0 home win over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, as did Belgians Gent after they beat visitors Rapid Vienna 2-1.

PAOK’S reward is a two-legged playoff against Russians Krasnodar, while Dynamo face Gent for berths in the money-spinning group stage featuring 32 teams.

Benfica, who won Europe’s premier club competition in 1961 and 1962, saw last season’s woes spill over into this term as Zivkovic, who endured four difficult seasons in Portugal, rubbed salt into their wounds.

Having seen the domestic league and cup double go to Porto last term, Benfica missed a string of chances against PAOK in a one-sided first half as they enjoyed 72% of possession.

They were punished after the break as Dimitrios Giannoulis poked in the opener from close range in the 63rd minute after a one-two with Chuba Akpom and substitute Zivkovic made it 2-0 in the 75th with a sweet shot inside the near post.

Rafa Silva pulled one back with a stoppage time header but it came too late to avoid an embarrassing defeat which will pile pressure on manager Jorge Jesus, who returned to Benfica during the close season for a second spell in charge.

Having been in charge from 2009 to 2015, Jesus went on to win the elusive double of the Brazilian league title and Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2019 but now faces a mammoth task to get Benfica back to winning ways.

Dynamo soaked up pressure on home soil against Alkmaar in the first half before Luxembourg forward Gerson Rodrigues fired them ahead just after the break with a neat finish into the roof of the net thanks to good work by Vitaliy Buyalskiy.

Mykola Shaparenko sealed their passage with a late header after visiting keeper Marco Bizot misjudged Tomasz Kedziora’s cross from the right which left the midfielder with the simple task of nodding the ball into an empty net.

Niklas Dorsch headed Gent into a 36th-minute lead against Rapid from a pinpoint Sven Kums assist and Roman Yaremchuk added the second with a penalty on the hour before Yusuf Demir netted a stoppage time consolation for the visitors.

In Wednesday’s standout fixtures, 1991 European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade visit Cypriots Omonia Nicosia while Dinamo Zagreb are at Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

MADRID The Spanish capital will introduce selective lockdowns in urban areas where the coronavirus is spreading faster.

Deputy regional health chief Antonio Zapatero said Wednesday that the measures will most likely affect southern, working-class neighborhoods of Madrid where infection rates have been steadily soaring since August.

Zapatero said that Madrid wants to flatten the curve before the arrival of autumn and the complications that cold weather could bring, adding that the measures to be taken will be decided by this weekend.

Madrid and its surrounding region of 6.6 million people have accounted for nearly one third of Spain’s new cases, which have averaged 8,200 per day for the past week.

Overall, Spain has had more than 600,000 cases and just over 30,000 deaths.

Francis said if people are unable to contemplate the beauty and majesty of nature without exploiting it, they will be similarly unable to contemplate others without taking advantage of them. He said: He who lives to exploit nature ends up exploiting people and treating them like slaves. This is a universal law.

Francis is expected to elaborate on the themes of solidarity, fraternity and care for creation in an encyclical hes expected to sign Oct. 3 on living in the post-COVID world.

HANOI, Vietnam Vietnam will resume international commercial flights connecting the country to several Asian destinations starting Friday, after a monthslong shutdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak.

The flights, however, are reserved for Vietnamese nationals, diplomats, experts, managers, skilled workers, investors and their families. They are not yet available for tourists.

The flights connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to destinations in South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan will operate weekly, the government website announced. Flights connecting Vietnams two largest cities with Cambodia and Laos will resume next week.

To board a flight, passengers must hold a certificate showing they have tested negative for the coronavirus no more than five days before the departure date. Upon arrival, they will be tested and quarantined, the report said.

Vietnam shut down international flights on April 1. National carrier Vietnam Airlines estimated last month that it would lose $650 million in 2020.

Vietnam has reported 1,059 cases of the coronavirus. It managed to avoid any deaths until July, when the virus crept into the city of Da Nang, killing 35 people.

But no new cases have been reported for two weeks. Last week, Da Nang lifted a travel restriction after two months.

PRAGUE The Czech Republic has registered another steep rise in coronavirus infections, with the number of new confirmed cases surpassing 1,600 in one day for the first time.

The Health Ministry says the day-to-day increase reached a new record of 1,677 on Tuesday. The record was broken four times last week.

The capital of Prague has the highest number of people who tested positive, over 141 per 100,000. The surge has prompted some European countries, including Slovakia, Denmark, Britain and Switzerland to impose travel restrictions for travellers from the Czech Republic.

According to government figures released on Wednesday, 333 people needed hospitalization. That number was over 400 during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring.

The Czech Republic has had 38,896 people infected with 476 deaths.

SEOUL, South Korea South Koreas daily coronavirus tally has stayed below 200 for two weeks, but the government is urging people not to lower their guard.

Authorities said Wednesday that the 113 cases added in the last 24 hours took the countrys total to 22,504, including 367 deaths.

Eighty-one of them were in the Seoul metropolitan area, the heart of a recent viral resurgence.

Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip called on people to refrain from having unnecessary gatherings and visiting crowded places.

UNITED NATIONS The new president of the U.N. General Assembly is warning that unilateralism will only strengthen the COVID-19 pandemic and is calling for a new commitment to global cooperation including on the fair and equitable distribution of vaccines.

Turkish diplomat and politician Volkan Bozkir, who took over the reins of the 193-member world body on Tuesday, announced that the General Assembly will hold a high-level special session on the COVID-19 pandemic in early November, though diplomats said the date may slip.

Bozkir takes over from outgoing General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, who presided over a unique year-old session that he said was defined by a pandemic and included virtual meetings and new voting procedures.

Bozkir told diplomats from U.N. member nations, seated at socially distanced spaces in the assembly chamber, that confronting the effects of the coronavirus in all their dimensions will be an overarching priority for my presidency.

He said no state can combat this pandemic alone, and it is the members responsibility to strengthen peoples faith in multilateral cooperation and international institutions, with the U.N. at their center.

Denvers dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.: Denvers dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

Murray scored 40 points, Jokic had a triple-double by the third quarter and Denver again overcame a double-digit deficit to shock the Los Angeles Clippers 104-89 in Game 7 on Tuesday night.

Denver became the first team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 series deficit twice in the same postseason.

Even more history: The Nuggets are the third team in the U.S. major pro sports to rally from a pair of 3-1 deficits in the same playoffs, joining the 1985 Kansas City Royals and 2003 Minnesota Wild.

Denver will face LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

The 7-foot Jokic had a monster game with 16 points, 13 assists and 22 rebounds, which were the most by a Nuggets player in an NBA playoff game.

Despite the additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers fell short of the conference finals, where theyve never been. They fell to 0-8 all-time in games where they could clinch a trip to the conference finals.

Leonard finished with 14 points on 6-of-22 shooting, while George had 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

HEAT 117, CELTICS 114, OT

Jimmy Butlers three-point play with 12 seconds left put Miami up for good, Bam Adebayo blocked Jayson Tatums dunk attempt in the final seconds and Miami rallied to beat Boston in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Kemba Walkers basket with 23.2 seconds left in overtime put Boston up by one, before Butler muscled his way to the rim for a score while getting fouled by Tatum. The Celtics went to Tatum on the ensuing possession, only to watch him get denied by Adebayo.

And the Heat down by 13 in the first quarter, down by 14 in the fourth struck first, ending Bostons seven-game streak of Game 1 wins.

Tatum scored 30 points for the Celtics, Marcus Smart had 26 points, Walker had 19 and Jaylen Brown added 17. Goran Dragic had 29 points, Jae Crowder scored 22, Jimmy Butler scored 20 and Adebayo had 18 for the Heat.

Miamis Tyler Herro was one assist shy of a triple-double finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Boston led 85-71 early in the fourth and kept the lead for almost all of the final period until Butler connected on a 3-pointer from the right corner with 22 seconds left for a 106-105 Miami edge.

Sushant Singh Rajput partied with Sara Ali Khan, Rhea Chakraborty and core team at Lonavala farmhouse, reveals actor's farmhouse manager

Updated : Sep 16, 2020, 10:19 IST

Sushant Singh Rajput's Lonavala farmhouse manager Raees recently revealed that Sara Ali Khan and Rhea Chakraborty partied frequently at the scenic place along with the actor. He also added that smoking papers were ordered for those occasions. He further added that while it was Sara who would accompany SSR initially along with his core team, Rhea, too, became a frequent visitor as the 'Kedarnath' actress' visits gradually lessened. He said that Rhea's birthday was celebrated last year at the farmhouse with her family and Sushant. Meanwhile, according to a report, a local boatman reportedly told NCB that 'Ganja' and 'liquor' were common in house parties held at SSR's place. He also shared that the late actor would visit the place with his core team and Rhea, Sara, Shraddha Kapoor and arrested drug-peddling suspect Zaid Vilatra.

Maharashtra revenue minister and state Congress president Balasaheb Thorat said onion prices have collapsed due to the ban on export, and asserted that his party will fight against this "injustice" meted out to farmers.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 3:26 PM IST

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday termed the central government as"anti-farmer" after it banned the export of onions. Terming the decision as wrong, the NCP leader accused the Centre of committing "great sin" of pushing farmers, who were already hit hard by COVID-19, into deeper trouble.

Maharashtra revenue minister and state Congress president Balasaheb Thorat said onion prices have collapsed due to the ban on export, and asserted that his party will fight against this "injustice" meted out to farmers. The central government on Monday banned the export of all varieties of onions with immediate effect to increase availability and curb prices of the commodity in the domestic market.

"The Centre banned onion export at a time when cultivators were getting good prices for their produce. It is absolutely wrong. It is obvious that the Centre is anti-farmer," Pawar alleged. He also referred to NCP president Sharad Pawar raising concerns over the decision before Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday, seeking its reversal.

"Onion growers are already in trouble due to COVID-19. Add to that, the Centre has committed this maha paap (great sin) of pushing the farmers into deeper trouble by banning export," the deputy chief minister said while speaking at a programme in the NCP's head office here.

Maharashtra revenue minister Thorat also criticised the Centre's decision and said onion prices have collapsed by 700 to Rs 800 per tonne due to the ban on export. "Farmers in the state are tackling problems arising out of cyclone and floods, and the state government is doing all it can to help them. But, the Centre is not cooperating," he said.

Earlier, the Centre allowed milk powder import when there were lakhs of tonnes of milk powder in the country. Due to this, milk prices came down, Thorat said. "Now, when there is scope for farmers to earn some money due to onion export, the central government has stopped. We will fight this injustice against farmers," he said.

The Mandalorian season 1 reaped 15 Emmy nominations, counting one in Outstanding Drama Series. The first season of Disney’s breakthrough TV Series saw no competition topped the charts on its debut and run. The hit series got more and more popular due to witty dialogues and ‘Baby Yoda’ memes that took social media by a storm.

Filming for the upcoming season commenced in October last year and concluded in March this year. Terminator fame Michael Biehn is reportedly set to essay a bounty hunter, also Rosario Dawson might play Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars and Rebels series. Russia To Sell 100 Million Doses Of COVID-19 Vaccine To India

Russia's sovereign wealth fund has agreed to supply 100 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine, SputnikV, to Indian drug company Dr Reddy's Laboratories, the fund said on Wednesday, as Moscow speeds up plans to distribute its shot abroad.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 3:57 PM IST

MOSCOW: Russia’s sovereign wealth fund has agreed to supply 100 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik-V, to Indian drug company Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, the fund said on Wednesday, as Moscow speeds up plans to distribute its shot abroad.

The deal comes after the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reached agreements with Indian manufacturers to produce 300 million doses of the vaccine in India, which is a major consumer of Russian oil and arms.

Dr Reddy’s, one of India’s top pharmaceutical companies, will carry out Phase III clinical trials of the vaccine in India, pending regulatory approval, RDIF said in a statement.

Deliveries to India could begin in late 2020, it said, adding this was subject to the completion of trials and the vaccine’s registration by regulatory authorities in India.

Russia was the first country to license a novel coronavirus vaccine before large-scale Phase III trials were complete, stirring concern among scientists and doctors about the safety and efficacy of the shot.

The Phase I and II results had shown promise, G V Prasad, co-chairman of Dr Reddy’s, was cited in the RDIF statement as saying.

“Sputnik V vaccine could provide a credible option in our fight against COVID-19 in India,” he said.

There was no detail about the price of the vaccine but RDIF has said previously it was not aiming at making a profit, just covering costs.

The agreement comes as India’s coronavirus cases surged past 5 million on Wednesday, piling pressure on hospitals grappling with unreliable supplies of oxygen that they need to treat tens of thousands of critical patients.

India is only the second country in the world to cross the grim milestone and said this week it is considering granting an emergency authorisation for a vaccine, particularly for the elderly and people in high-risk workplaces.

The RDIF has already reached vaccine supply deals with Kazakhstan, Brazil and Mexico. It has also signed a memorandum with the Saudi Chemical company.

Russia has billed Sputnik-V as the first vaccine against the coronavirus to be registered in the world. Phase III trials, involving at least 40,000 people, were launched in Russia on Aug. 26 but have yet to be completed.

Safety car lights change wouldn't have stopped pile-up - Latifi
By:

Nicholas Latifi doubts that Formula 1 would have avoided the Tuscan GP restart pile-up even if the safety car lights had turned off earlier.

The Mugello race had to be red flagged when a number of cars, including Latifi’s Williams, were eliminated after crashing into each at the first safety car restart.

The incident was blamed on cars at the back of the pack accelerating to try to get a good getaway, while those ahead had to brake because race leader Valtteri Bottas held off on his restart until the last moment.

After the race, a number of drivers suggested that one of the trigger points for the incident was that the lights on the safety car had turned off so late, leaving Bottas with no option but to delay his restart until the last second.

But Latifi, who joined Carlos Sainz, Kevin Magnussen and Antonio Giovinazzi in being eliminated in the chain reaction incident, thinks that the timing of the safety car lights had nothing to do with it.

“When the safety car lights go out too late when you're the leader, you always want it to come off as early as possible so you can just start controlling your pace,” said Latifi.

“At the same time, with Valtteri in the lead. I'd be very surprised if he went earlier if the safety car lights went off earlier. For me, he would have waited to still be as late as he did because you want to minimize the slipstream effect.

"So let's say even if the car lights went out at the beginning of the lap, and then he had a whole lap, I guarantee you he would probably still want to go at the same place, because that would have been the smart thing to do.”

Latifi believes that the way to avoid repeat incidents in the future is to perhaps make special arrangements regarding restart procedures at tracks which have the potential to be troublesome because of their layout.

“Going forward, I think maybe on a case by case basis on certain tracks, so mainly here, if we come back, and a track like Baku, maybe they just have to think about implementing something a bit different,” said the Canadian

“It's a difficult judgement to make. But definitely, I think there has to be, let's say, a bit more discipline from all the drivers in situations like that, too.

“Not be nose to tail in case something like that happens, but to keep a reasonable gap. Because I truly think the accident was caused by some drivers in the mid pack leaving too big a gap and accelerating flat out into that gap thinking: 'Oh, now I've got to get close because the race is about to restart.”

Ford Options and Ford Options Cashplan give commercial vehicle customers more choices to finance their van | Automotive World

Ford Options and Ford Options Cashplan give commercial vehicle customers more choices to finance their van

Ford Options complements existing finance products available for commercial vehicle customers, and enables them to renew, return or retain their vehicle at contract end

Ford Credit, the financing arm of Ford Motor Company, has introduced Ford Options and Ford Options Cashplan to give commercial vehicle purchasers another route to buy and finance a new Ford van.

Ford Options is available to both private individuals and business users, with customers choosing their deposit amount, loan length and annual mileage.

“Ford Options allows customers to drive a new Ford with a tailor-made financing package that suits their needs,” said Louise Clunie, lease and CV manager, Ford Credit Britain. “This type of flexible product has been the most popular finance plan for Ford passenger vehicles in the U.K. for more than 25 years, and we are delighted to now make it available across our award-winning commercial vehicle range too.”

Ford Options is a hire purchase agreement with three options at the end of contract: to renew, retain or return the vehicle. Customers pay a deposit of their choosing (to a maximum of 35 percent of the vehicle cost), followed by monthly payments over the length of the financing agreement. This can be for 24, 36 or 48 months, with an optional final payment due at the end.

Alternatively, Ford Options Cashplan adds interest and fees to the balance of the finance, to be paid as an advance payment rather than monthly payments, also with an optional final payment due at the end of the agreement.

“The majority of our business customers currently finance their Ford vehicles on traditional loan agreements. Ford Options goes further by offering customers ownership, a planned and controlled change cycle, and choice at the end of the contract. We can tailor their finance package to meet their acquisition needs, wants and desires, making Ford Options a more affordable option for many customers,” said Clunie.

  • Slight veiling in the low-treble range

Verdict

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 had lofty expectations to meet, in more ways than one, and they have actually managed to meet and even surpass most of those expectations. The battery life has been hugely improved, the addition of ANC is a welcome one, and the fit and comfort of the earbuds have also been enhanced since the dimensions of the earbuds have been trimmed down. Moreover, the promising sound quality usually found on Sennheiser audio products is here in all of its glory. The lack of wireless charging and the slight veiling of detail in the lower-treble are really the only missteps here. Despite these small issues, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is a truly remarkable pair of true wireless earphones. However, they are not for everyone, owing solely to the exorbitant price. Still, if you can afford to buy these stellar earphones, you will most likely be extremely pleased with your purchase.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 detailed review

The much-awaited Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 has finally arrived in the congested and highly cutthroat Indian audio market. These are the esteemed German company’s second stab at the true wireless in-ears form factor, with the original version having been released back in 2018. At the time, those were the very best true wireless earphones you could get your hands on. In fact, these earbuds even won the Digit Zero1 award for the best performing True Wireless in-ear headphones in 2019. However, the landscape of true wireless earphones has gone through tectonic alterations in the last two years with the introduction of several features and the development of the then-nascent technology. So, how does the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 stack up to premium true wireless offerings from Jabra, Apple, and numerous others in 2020? Let’s find out in our review.

Build and design

Sennheiser has largely retained the aesthetic of the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earphones in the new version, nevertheless, they do boast some functional changes in design and build. The earbuds’ size has been slashed down slightly, making them appear more streamlined overall. They now appear even more intelligibly luxurious featuring shiny metallic housings and a rounded, ergonomic shape. The Sennheiser logo is smacked right on the shiny metal housing. Don’t let the word ‘shiny’ here deter you from getting these earphones even if you’re not a fan of gloss and shine, the metallic housings aren’t at all ostentatious in appearance, in fact, they’re quite the opposite, they’re unmistakably premium and elegant.

The back houses the gold-plated charging connectors and LEDs that indicate the connectivity status. They are considerably bulkier than obnoxiously diminutive earphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus and the Jabra Elite 75t, however, the slight decrease in size has certainly made them more svelte overall.

The charging case’s look on the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless immediately floored us, with its gorgeous woven fabric finish. The Momentum True Wireless 2 sticks to the same tried-and-tested look, however, they have altered the colour to be more in line with the earphones themselves. The new case features a darker grey colour, which, in our opinion, elevates the design further.

The company will also be releasing a white variant later during the year. On the back of the charging case, you will find a USB-C port, an LED light and a tiny button, which when pressed, lights up the LED to relay the battery remaining on the charging case.

Upon opening the case, you will be greeted with the company’s name written in bold on the upper portion of the case. The bottom part houses the cavities for the earphones along with gold-plated magnetic pins that hold the earbuds secure in the case. The case opens and shuts with an audibly satisfying snap and the earbuds slot into the cavities in a similar, satisfying manner. Be assured that even if you drop the case, the earphones will hardly ever budge from their intended slot since the magnets within the case are pretty strong.

Overall, the build quality and design of the charging case and the earphones themselves will certainly match up to the lofty price of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. You’re paying a premium for these exorbitantly-priced earphones but you’re, without an iota of doubt, getting a premium and seemingly durable design and build. The only complaint we’d dish out is that the case, while aesthetically-pleasing, is not one of the most pocketable ones we’ve seen. They are slightly on the larger side and will definitely bulge out of most pockets.

Comfort and fit

One complaint the 2018 Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless received by quite a few reviewers and customers was regarding the overall comfort. The original Momentum True Wireless would start to cause some fatigue over time due to the pressure the relatively large earphones would apply on the ears. This issue, faced by numerous users, has largely been solved in the Momentum True Wireless 2. We wore the earphones for over 5 hours at a stretch with absolutely no comfort issues. We’re guessing the reduced dimensions of the new earphones have made them feel more comfortable over longer listening sessions. The earphones are also quite lightweight which can aid comfort and fit as well. The reviewer’s ears are on the smaller side, still, there were no apparent signs of overwhelming fatigue or discomfort.

In addition to being supremely comfortable over long listening sessions, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 also provides an exceeding snug and secure fit in the ear. The company has included four pairs of silicone eartips in the box in various sizes (XS, S, M, L). Ensure that you find the right size for your ear by trying out all the tips and see which gives you the most secure fit possible. Also, to get the full extent of the fit, you will need to slide the earphones into your ear and then twist them to sort of, lock them into place.
The reviewer found the fit to be absolutely phenomenal with the medium-sized eartips. The earphones didn’t budge at all during various activities such as walking around, running, eating, talking, and even stayed put when the reviewer shook her hair violently for no apparent reason. You can easily go running or gymming with these earphones if you manage to find the perfect fit, and having four ear tips to choose from certainly helps in that quest. The good seal also amped up the passive isolation. While the earphones do feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), the passive noise cancellation was enough to diminish background noise considerably. An additional pair of foam tips would be phenomenal, even though we’re more than happy with the fit already.

Features

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 come equipped with a cornucopia of features. The most prominent one being the induction of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) that wasn’t present on the 2018 model. Since the Sony WF-1000XM3 earphones aren’t officially available in India, it makes the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 one of the very few true wireless earphones that come equipped with ANC, alongside the Apple AirPods Pro. It’s great to see Sennheiser offer this feature since the premium price tag calls for it. We’ll elaborate more on the quality of the ANC in the next section.

Alongside ANC, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 also comes with a Transparent Hearing mode which basically enhances ambient sound and plays it back to you. It works pretty well and can really come in handy when you want to listen to music but you also need to be aware of your surroundings and have a quick conversation without taking the earphones off. It works great if your music volume is slightly on the lower side, say about 40-50 per cent.

The metallic outer surface of each earphone also doubles as a touch control pad that can be used to carry out various functions. The default touch controls are a bit unintuitive. Pressing the left touchpad once pauses or plays music, a double-tap skips the track, while a triple-tap takes you to the previous track. Similarly, on the right side, pressing the touchpad once activates your voice assistant, a double-tap turns on Transparent Hearing, while a triple-tap activates ANC. Also, pressing and holding down the right and left touchpad increases and decreases the volume level respectively. These controls just felt a bit too unnatural and hard to memorise for us. Fortunately, the touchpad commands are completely customisable! You can alter all the touch commands via the Sennheiser Smart Control app. We love that Sennheiser has allowed the ability to switch around the touch controls since it something that is not commonly seen in true wireless earphones, but it is often something many users desire.

Speaking of the Smart Control app, it hosts a customisable EQ as well. You can tweak the sound signature to your preference and even save up to 9 different sound profiles. You can also toggle on or off a few other features such as ANC, Transparent Hearing, Auto Accept Call (automatically accepts an incoming call when the right earbud is taken out of the case), Smart pause, and Sidetone.

Smart pause automatically pauses music or media when one earbud is taken out of the ear. It also auto-plays the music when the earphone is inserted back into the ear. The on-ear detection is likely accomplished by employing optical sensors and is a pretty nifty feature. You can easily pause/play music on the fly when you simply want to have a conversation or do something else. Instead of fumbling around to tap the touchpad to pause, you can simply enable this feature to make it more intuitive. Sidetone, on the other hand, gives you an audible feedback of your own voice when on a phone call. This prevents users from talking too loud when they’re on a call.

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 comes equipped with the latest Bluetooth v5.1. The wireless transmission range of the earphones is 10m or 33 feet, as per the company. This is, of course, achieved barring any obstacles, which will essentially reduce the range. We noticed that the connection was quite solid throughout our usage, with absolutely no lags and skips in the audio. The connectivity was also maintained at a distance with a wall or two in between, so it’s safe to say you won’t have any pressing complaints about the Bluetooth connectivity. Additionally, audio codecs such as AAC and aptX are also supported.

Unfortunately, you can only connect to only one device at a time with the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. So, if you’re used to using your earphones interchangeably on your smartphone and laptop/PC, you’ll be disappointed since you have to disconnect from the currently connected device to connect to another one.

Battery life is another area where the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless got some flak. Other than some odd battery drain issues, the battery life itself on the older version was lacklustre, coming in at a total of a mere 12 hours of battery life (4 hours on the buds + 8 hours from the charging case). This time around, Sennheiser has more than doubled the battery life on the Momentum True Wireless 2 compared to its predecessor. You now get a total of approximately 28 hours of battery life, with 7 hours on the buds and 3 additional charges (21 hours) via the case. We’ll elaborate more on battery life in the next section.

The earphones also sport an IPX4 rating which means they can easily withstand light splashes and sweat, making them usable during intense sweat-inducing workouts and even in light rainfall. Also, they come with a USB Type-C charging cable which charges the case pretty rapidly. The one feature that the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 sorely lacks is wireless charging. Although it is not an extremely essential feature, it is pretty useful for those who already use wireless chargers at home or those who have smartphones equipped with reverse charging. We were quite disappointed to see Sennheiser give this feature a skip since the premium price tag calls for it, seeing that even relatively affordable true wireless earphones such as the Noise Shots XO and the Realme Buds Air have included wireless charging for the case.

Performance

The biggest strength of the original Momentum True Wireless earphones was definitely the stellar sound quality. With the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2, despite the addition of more features, the sound quality is still very much the highlight. The Momentum True Wireless 2 pack the same 7mm dynamic drivers as the originals did, however, there are some subtle changes and even improvements to the sound quality that were probably achieved via chip and software upgrades over their predecessor.

Let’s start with the bass response, which is absolutely sublime on these earphones. The bass is rich, textured and also punchy. Each bass thump has sufficient drive and enthusiasm but it also features oodles of detail. The Momentum True Wireless 2 has an astounding control over the quality of the bass which never strays away from prioritising quality over raw power. In Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, the bass guitar sounds taut, well-controlled and textured. The lows are also extremely well-produced and detailed. We didn’t hear any harshness in this frequency even at high volume levels, which is impressive. Listening to Rewind by Kelala, we were surprised to hear the sheer drive and intensity in the lows, which is rare in true wireless earbuds. The bass response and the lows bring a soothing warmth and fullness to tracks.

The mid accuracy on these earphones is also pretty remarkable. Lead instruments and vocals in these frequencies sound divine and natural, and the Momentum True Wireless 2 is able to extract absurd amounts of detail in this frequency range, with even slight breaths being clearly audible. It brings a certain rawness to vocal-centric tracks which we really appreciated.

The highs on the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are definitely more subtle and controlled compared to the likes of the Apple AirPods. While overall the highs seem pretty detailed and well-produced, there’s a higher-than-usual drop in the lower-treble range that sometimes compromises a bit of detail, especially in female vocals. Sennheiser audio products usually have a characteristic drop in a part of the high frequencies which can be jarring to the human ear, however, this time around it seems that they have dropped the reproduction of this frequency point even more than usual which has compromised a bit of detail here. Nevertheless, it is still something most ears won’t be able to pick up that easily. If you do and it does bother you, you can always bump up the lower-treble range slightly via the customisable EQ on the app.

The soundstage is excellent on these earphones, possibly the best we’ve tested on true wireless earphones so far. The stage is abundantly wide and surprisingly, even features some height to it. The imaging on these earphones is yet again, stellar and in tracks such as Popular Monster by Falling in Reverse, that features a chaotic mess of instruments, you can still distinctly tell most of them apart.

Coming to the battery life, it has definitely improved in comparison to its predecessor. In our test the earphones did manage to stay powered on for about 7 hours continuously, however, this is without ANC turned on. With ANC, the earbuds will only last you about 4.5 hours with ANC turned on the whole time, as per our tests. Still, this stacks up pretty well since the AirPods Pro also last about 5 hours with ANC turned on. You also have an additional 3 charges (21 hours) of battery life on the case itself which is a massive improvement over the 8 hours on the previous model.

Powered by Bluetooth v5.1, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 features almost no tangible latency when playing games or streaming shows. Also, the sound is immersive and dynamic when watching films or TV series, especially action ones. The microphone quality on the earphones is also quite good. The caller on the other end could hear everything we said quite clearly and the sounds in our background were sufficiently filtered out of the conversation. Dictating a paragraph on Google Notes also showed that the microphone was able to pick up most of what we were saying accurately.

Now, let’s talk about the quality of the Active Noise Cancellation on the Momentum True Wireless 2. While these earphones certainly cannot reproduce the level of ANC an over-ear pair of headphones can provide, they do diminish background sounds significantly when ANC is active. The Momentum True Wireless 2 did a stellar job at drowning out constant sounds and chatter in the background such as the hum of the AC and even some voices. It does better at cutting out low rumbles in comparison to higher-frequency sounds such as typing on a mechanical keyboard. Nevertheless, it still muffles high-frequency sounds to an acceptable degree. They do offer much better ANC than the 1More True Wireless ANC earphones we reviewed in the past.

Bottomline

His brother Bob, who replaced him in the band, shared the tragic news on Facebook, saying his brother had died in 'one of those stupid ladder accidents'.

In his heartfelt tribute, he opened up about admiring his brother who was a 'fabulous guitarist'.

'Quite honestly this is just a f***ing tragedy especially for Dianna and the girls. (and in lockdown!)

'So one and all, as my mother would say, ''count your Blessing''.'

Skyhooks shot to fame in the mid-70s with hits such as Horror Movie, Ego is Not A Dirty Word, All My Friends Are Getting Married and Women In Uniform.

Verdict

The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus isn't a particularly good phone. It doesn't match up to its competition, and there are better phones out there, including the Coolpad Note 3 and Meizu M2 Note.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus detailed review

Not many smartphones offer 5-inch or smaller displays, in the sub-10k segment today. Chances are, you might be reading this review on a larger display as well. However, many of us would like to go back to a smaller screen, I know I do. So, the Lenovo K5 Plus, with its 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, and attractive design seems to be a good proposition. On paper, it seems like a good budget phone. It takes on the likes of the Coolpad Note 3 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (16GB), and tries to incorporate features from both phones.

Design and Build
The Lenovo K5 Plus has a removable metal back, which is also a first for this price bracket. For this, Lenovo has put a thin metal sheet on a plastic removable back. This makes for a good looking smartphone, which feels good to hold as well. The chrome polish on the device also adds to the whole design. It is solidly built, but the metal finish does feel a tad slippery in your hand.

The display on the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is somewhat of a disappointment though. The 5 inch 1080p panel isn’t what you call bad, but we’ve seen much better, even in this price range. The colour saturation is well balanced and the viewing angles are also quite good. In addition, the touch response is decent, but you can feel the lack of Gorilla Glass here. Even the sunlight visibility isn’t up to the mark, and phones like the Meizu M2 Note, Coolpad Note 3 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, have much better displays.

Display and UI
While the smaller display has allowed Lenovo to make a compact phone, the display itself lacks quality. Further, Lenovo’s Vibe UI a big part of the 2GB of RAM on the device and doesn’t really add to the feature set. It has a theme manager with just six themes, about half a dozen apps come pre-loaded, many of which can be uninstalled. When we installed our regular apps for testing the phone, it started showing considerable lags. The phone runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

The performance of the phone wasn’t great either. The Snapdragon 616 is slightly improved from the 615, but manages heat much better. We’ve seen similar performance from phones like the Moto G Turbo, which are powered by the older processor. The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus looks good on paper, but as we saw with the Honor 5X, this isn’t really the ideal performer either.

Performance
The gaming experience on the K5 Plus isn’t as good as the Coolpad Note 3, even though the two phones are similarly powered (despite different SoCs). The K5 Plus heats up after about half an hour of gaming, and the SoC seems to be throttled pretty easily. Using it for day-to-day tasks, such as browsing or streaming videos, we found occasional lags on the smartphone.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus
Create bar charts

On the other hand, the audio performance  is simply the best in this category. There are two Dolby Atmos enabled speakers at the back, which are quite loud for a phone in the sub-10k price bracket. Moreover, the sound quality is really good when you’re listening to audio via headphones. The Dolby software improves the bass, which many users will like and the mids are clearer than others when listening to music via headphones.

That said, the rear speakers do get muffled if the device is put back down, which will be most of the times.

Battery
Moving on, the battery life on the Vibe K5 Plus is another area that needs improvement. On the Geekbench 3 battery test, the phone lasts for about 5.5 hours, which is outright poor. Competitors like the Coolpad Note 3, can run for over 10 hours. During our review period, we had to charge the phone at least twice a day.

Camera
Lastly, the camera on the Lenovo K5 Plus is not as good as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, which has a 16MP rear sensor and much faster overall operation. However, it is still comparable to the likes of the Coolpad Note 3 and the Meizu M2 Note.

The 13MP rear shooter on the phone can capture good images in normal lighting conditions. The contrast levels are decent and the colour reproduction is quite accurate. The auto-focus and shutter response of the phone aren’t the fastest in its price bracket and is at par with the Coolpad Note 3 and the Meizu M2 Note. While Lenovo has endeavoured to reduce the noise levels in low light conditions, it’s not the best. It’s another area where the Redmi Note 3 outperforms this phone.

View post on imgur.com

To make it simpler, the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus can take images as good as the Coolpad Note 3 or Meizu M2 Note, but isn’t at fast. On the other hand, it’s inferior in every way to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

The front-facing camera takes decent selfies, which can be further tweaked using the Beautify toggle. The camera app is pretty simple, but it does feature filters like emboss, mono, sepia, etc.

Bottomline
To sum up, it is quite evident that the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is not a particularly good phone. While the display and camera are still acceptable, the battery life and performance are disappointing. It lags marginally behind phones like the Meizu M2 Note and the Coolpad Note 3, and is no match to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

Zara Owner Inditex Says Store Sales Recovering As It Returns To Profit

The owner of fashion retailer Zara, Inditex, returned to quarterly profit in the three months from May to July despite a 31% fall in sales as the coronavirus crisis kept consumers away from city centre shopping districts.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:54 PM IST

MADRID: The owner of fashion retailer Zara, Inditex, returned to quarterly profit in the three months from May to July despite a 31% fall in sales as the coronavirus crisis kept consumers away from city centre shopping districts.

Inditex, which also owns the Massimo Dutti and Bershka brands, said 98% of its stores had reopened and that current trade showed a progressive return to normality with online sales growing sharply and store sales recovering.

In the current quarter, sales in store and online from Aug. 1 to Sept. 6 at constant exchange rates were on an improving trend, though still down 11% from a year earlier.

Inditex shares rose 5% on Wednesday morning, adding to gains booked on Tuesday after Swedish rival H&M beat quarterly profit forecasts.

Shoppers have started to buy fashion again since stores reopened following shutdowns. JP Morgan estimates continental Europe fashion sales were down 15% in July on average compared to May’s 42% drop.

Inditex reported a second-quarter net profit of 214 million euros ($253 million), beating the 96 million euro mean forecast from Refinitiv’s SmartEstimate model, which is weighted towards more recent estimates and higher-ranked analysts.

It saw a 74% jump in online sales in the first half, a trend seen at apparel retailers worldwide, as shoppers bought from home with many stores closed and movement restrictions in place.

In a sign of how apparel spending has switched to more comfortable styles with many working from home and parties cancelled, Zara’s app showed autumn looks with wide trousers and flat shoes on models climbing fences and riding bikes.

For the first half, it reported a net loss of 195 million euros on sales down 37%.

It said it would have reported a profit had it not booked a 308 million euro charge related to its integration of its store and online platforms.

'Heartbreaking day' as Chester Zoo endangered elephant dies

Asian elephant Thi Hi Way was a great grandmother

Thi Hi Way with her calf Anjan

A beloved elephant at Chester Zoo has died.

Thi Hi Way, who was a long-time matriach of the family herd of the Asian elephants, had been battling with arthritis for many years.

The female elephant, who was originally from Myanmar, was a great grandmother and had given birth to several calves in her time, including Assam in 2000 and Anjan in 2018.

Conservationists have paid tribute to the "extraordinary legacy" she’s left on the endangered species.

On their website, Chester Zoo wrote it was "with an extremely heavy heart" that they had to share the news of the death of the Asian elephant following a period of intensive end-of-life care and irreversible decline in her conition.

The zoo's director of animals and plants, Mike Jordan said: "This is a truly heartbreaking day.

"Generations of zoo visitors and the vast majority of our staff have never known a Chester Zoo without great grandmother elephant, Thi Hi Way. She was deeply loved and will be enormously missed. Thi was a giant within the global conservation community.

"While today is terribly sad, we also look back and celebrate her life and remember the hugely positive impact she’s had – not just on the multi-generational family herd here at Chester but on Asian elephant research, understanding and conservation, globally.

"Thi had a big personality. She was a real ambassador for her species and, in many ways, a pioneer.

"A great deal of what conservationists know about Asian elephant biology and behaviour and the way that these remarkable animals live and reproduce has been learnt from Thi and her offspring.

"She has greatly enhanced our collective knowledge of this wonderful species and leaves an extraordinary legacy, one which has benefitted, and will continue to benefit, Asian elephants everywhere.

“Chester Zoo is at the forefront of the fight for endangered Asian elephants and Thi will always be remembered as an integral part of that."

Elephants are highly sociable animals and experts say the family group will go through a short grieving process before natural instincts ensure they quickly move on from the loss of Thi.

Experts Cite 'Crimes Against Humanity' In Maduro's Venezuela

Independent experts commissioned by the U.N.s top human rights body have alleged the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro committed crimes against humanity.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:45 PM IST

GENEVA: Independent experts commissioned by the U.N.s top human rights body have alleged the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro committed crimes against humanity.

The experts issued a scathing, in-depth report on Wednesday that said the people responsible for crimes that include extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions and torture must be held to account, in part to ensure they don’t happen again.

The report was commissioned last year by the 47-member-state Human Rights Council, which has the backing of the United Nations,

The findings, based on nearly 3,000 cases that were investigated or examined, concluded that Maduro and his defense and interior ministers were aware of crimes committed by security forces and intelligence agencies. It further alleged that high-level authorities had both power and oversight over the forces and agencies, making the top officials responsible.

The report appeared likely to fan international and domestic criticism of Maduros government, which has overseen a country in tatters with runaway inflation, a violent crackdown and an exodus of millions of Venezuelans who have fled to neighboring countries to escape the turmoil since he took power in 2013.

The Goa Quiz Championship (GQC), facilitated by the Education Committee, Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EduCom, GCCI) and Goa State Innovation Council, has received a great response from Goan students with participants from more than 110 schools registering and students from more schools joining in every day.

Apart from the element of individual achievement, a driving force for students is the team glory as a school team. Student of class 12, Ryan said: “I know I am not the greatest quizzer myself. Yet, I am participating in GQC since I wanted to give it a shot. I feel enthused as I am able to encourage several of my schoolmates so that we can all participate together. Actually, it’s interesting that all of our points count towards the school score, and thus we can win the GQC Trophy together as a school. Additionally, all of us get gold medals and the winners’ certificates if our school happens to be the champion team. That is definitely very cool.”

GQC has received a favourable response from the parents as well. Mother of Anushka, Pramila Shetye stated: “Anushka is not an avid quizzer, but she is generally very observant and has a curious mind. GQC seemed like a good platform to expose her to a dose of competition. Whether she wins or not is immaterial. After registering for GQC, she gained access to the Preparatory Whatsapp Quizzes being conducted by the GQC Team. I find these quizzes very interesting myself and Anushka enjoys applying her brains in a fun way to get the answers. Quite a change from her disinterested state since the lockdown. I’d recommend all parents to register their kids to GQC for sure.”

Chairman, Educom, GCCI, professor Raghuveer Vernekar added: “It is heartening to note the enthusiasm of Goa students for this innovative and educational initiative. Even the preparatory experience for GQC is an engaging and fun experience and students should take part in it more for elevated learning than just for winning prizes.”

Endorsed by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, GQC has a prize pot of `4 lakhs, with the seniors champion taking home `1 lakh cash, among the best in India for competitions of similar nature. Additional prizes, medals, trophies and shields for other winners, school toppers and champion schools add to the sheen of GQC.

(Registrations for GQC are open till September 30, 2020 at: https://SpaceOdyssey.in/GQC. Students registering early get early access to WhatsApp Quizzes to prepare for GQC. Details: 9356429326.)

Choosing the right cover crop to protect the soil

Date:
September 16, 2020

American Society of Agronomy
Summary:
Research helps farmers pick the best cover crops to keep their soil and nutrients in the field.
Share:
FULL STORY

Farmers around the world are keen to protect their most important asset: their soil. The soil supports and enriches their crops. But the relatively thin layer of topsoil can readily wash away into streams, carrying unwanted nutrients with it.

Enter cover crops. Cover crops are inedible plants grown during the off-season. Their roots help keep soil in place, preventing erosion. Cover crops can even absorb excess nutrients like nitrogen to keep them from polluting streams. Farmers are increasingly interested in using cover crops to help their farms. But with a dizzying array of plants to choose from and complex crop rotations, making the right choice is no easy feat.

"I believe cover crops are a very important tool for both retaining soil and keeping nutrients on the farm," says María Villamil, a researcher at the University of Illinois and a member of the American Society of Agronomy. "In the Midwest, we are very lucky to have high fertility soils, making us big providers of food worldwide. The protection of our soils is critical."

To help farmers in Illinois choose the right cover crop, Villamil and her team decided to test several potential cover crops. They planted different cover crops between the common Midwestern rotation of corn and soybeans. The researchers worked closely with farmers to choose which cover crops to test.

"They wanted to test different cover crops, especially ones that don't generate extra work in the spring and others that will not compete with the corn for resources," says Villamil.

Farmers preferred growing cereal rye as a cover crop before soybeans were planted. The rye captured the nitrogen remaining in the soil after the previous year's corn crop season. But, when farmers were planning to grow corn, they preferred using a vetch cover crop. Vetch is a legume crop, which means it can provide nitrogen for the corn to use later in the season. Vetch also uses less water than cereal rye, which means the corn crop will not need to work as hard to compete for limited water resources.

Villamil's team set up experimental plots at six locations around the state. Toward the end of the growing season for corn or soybeans, researchers walked through the crop fields to spread cover crop seeds among the plants. This mimics seeding by airplane. Aerial seeding has been a popular idea to plant cover crops in a timely manner over existing crops in fields. The cover crops they tested included spring oats, red clover, annual ryegrass and radishes, among others.

Then the researchers tracked how well the cover crops grew, how soil properties changed over time, and the yield of future food crops.

Surprisingly, the cover crops didn't have a big effect on the soil. "There was not much improvement of the soil properties with using a cover crop, except for maybe the rotation using the annual ryegrass," says Villamil.

The biggest reason most of the cover crops didn't affect the soil very much is that most of them died over the winter. That's largely because of the weather. Midwestern states like Illinois are subject to potentially harsh winters, especially in the northern part of the state. The broadcast seeding the researchers did also meant that the seeds simply sat on top of the soil. That meant the cover crops had a harder time germinating than if the seeds had been buried in the ground.

But cover crops that die over winter can be a good thing. Dead cover crops mean farmers will have less work killing them in the spring. But they're also less effective at protecting the soil or absorbing nutrients.

Annual ryegrass and cereal rye, both grasses, largely survived the winter, as did hairy vetch, a legume like soybeans. The grasses slightly reduced future corn yields. That's probably because they compete with corn for water in the spring.

"The yields of soybeans were not affected at all. Soybeans grow very well with cover crops, so we need to take advantage of that," says Villamil.

The team also tested how tilling the fields affected the soil and yields, but saw only modest effects.

"The lesson is that wringing benefits from cover crops requires a bigger commitment to using them to protect the soil," says Villamil. "That means choosing cover crops that can survive the winter, grow a lot in the spring, and hold onto soil that whole time. Some cover crops might slightly decrease future crop yields, but in the long-term, protecting our soil is worth it."

"If we want to see benefits from cover crops, we need to focus on managing our cropping systems for cover crops, giving them room to grow, and using them strategically following corn crops, or silage corn or even wheat, if we are lucky to have this crop in the rotation" she says. "Our main goal when using cover crops should be protecting the soil and leaving the soil nutrients in place."

Robbie Coltrane has spoken out in defence of JK Rowling after she was accused of being transphobic.

The Harry Potter author has continuously come under fire for her controversial views on gender identity, but vehemently denies that she is transphobic.

The row was rekindled this week when it was revealed that her new book, Troubled Blood, features a 'transvestite serial killer'.

She has been criticised by Harry Potter stars including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

He told the Radio Times: 'I don't think what she said was offensive really. I don't know why but there's a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended.

'They wouldn't have won the war, would they? That's me talking like a grumpy old man, but you just think, ''Oh, get over yourself. Wise up, stand up straight and carry on''.'

Cracker star Coltrane, said he did not want to go further because, 'I don't want to get involved in all of that because of all the hate mail and all that s***, which I don't need at my time of life'.

Ms Rowling was initially accused of being transphobic after responding to an article headlined 'Creating a more equal post-Covid-19 world for people who menstruate'.

She tweeted: 'People who menstruate.' I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?'

She went on to defend her comments and said: 'If sex isn't real, there's no same-sex attraction. If sex isn't real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.

'I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn't hate to speak the truth.'

Jedward also waded into the JK Rowling transphobia row, suggesting their fans use her new book as firewood.

The former X Factor stars, real names John and Edward Grimes, have become the latest high profile figures to criticise Rowling for the comments, writing on Twitter: '#TransRightsAreHumanRights Understanding is the first step to acceptance @jk-rowling and only with acceptance can there be recovery.

'It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!

'Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving!

'We couldn't be more proud of our fans! Over the years seeing the growth and development finding who they are and becoming their true authentic selves!

'We LOVE You #TransRightsAreHumanRights.'

They added: 'Does anyone need firewood this winter! JK's new book is perfect to burn next to a Romantic fire. Aww get all cozy and comfy can't wait.'

She has also been criticised by Harry Potter stars including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Speaking to The Times, Rupert said: 'I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers. Trans women are women. Trans men are men.

'We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgement.'

Emma, 30, wrote: 'Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are.

'I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.'

She went on to say that she was proud to donate to charities such as Mermaids and Mama Cash before encouraging her fans to do the same.

Emma concluded: 'Happy #Pride2020 Sending love x.'

Daniel Radcliffe, 30, wrote a heartfelt blog post for The Trevor Project, a non-profit devoted to suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth.

He said: 'Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.'

Since the backlash, Mermaids - a charity that supports transgender children - urged Rowling to meet some of the young people it works with in a lengthy statement challenging her views.

But she has since answered her critics with a 3,663 word essay posted on her website on Wednesday under the headline: 'J.K. Rowling Writes about Her Reasons for Speaking out on Sex and Gender Issues.'

She included her personal experiences with domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband of 18 months, Jorges Arantes.

She appeared mindful that her words might not be suitable for her younger fans by adding the sub-heading: 'Warning: This piece contains inappropriate language for children.'

Defence: The wordsmith seemingly denied claims of transphobia, before retweeting a fan's comment which slammed 'extremists' for 'insisting biological sex is an illusion'

Defence: The wordsmith seemingly denied claims of transphobia, before retweeting a fan's comment which slammed 'extremists' for 'insisting biological sex is an illusion'

In it, the author revealed she was sexually assaulted in her 20s and told of her scars of domestic violence from her first marriage.

'I couldn't shut out those memories and I was finding it hard to contain my anger and disappointment about the way I believe my government is playing fast and loose with womens and girls' safety.'

Ms Rowling also went on to describe her experience of domestic and sexual abuse.

'I've been in the public eye now for over twenty years and have never talked publicly about being a domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor,' she wrote.

'This isn't because I'm ashamed those things happened to me, but because they're traumatic to revisit and remember. I also feel protective of my daughter from my first marriage.'

The author had one child, daughter Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes, 26, with her Portuguese ex-husband. They were married for just 13 months.

Former drug addict Arantes admitted in 2000 that he had once slapped her 'very hard' early in the morning of November 17, 1993 and thrown her out of the house in Porto, Portugal.

He said: 'She refused to go without Jessica... there was a violent struggle. I had to drag her out of the house at five in the morning, and I admit I slapped her very hard in the street.'

Ms Rowling returned the following day with a policeman to retrieve their four-month-old daughter Jessica and stayed in hiding with friends for two weeks before returning to the UK.

In her post, Ms Rowling said she did not want to 'claim ownership' of a story which also belongs to her daughter.

'I didn't want to claim sole ownership of a story that belongs to her, too. However, a short while ago, I asked her how she'd feel if I were publicly honest about that part of my life, and she encouraged me to go ahead,' she added.

'I'm mentioning these things now not in an attempt to garner sympathy, but out of solidarity with the huge numbers of women who have histories like mine, who've been slurred as bigots for having concerns around single-sex spaces.

'I managed to escape my first violent marriage with some difficulty, but I'm now married to a truly good and principled man, safe and secure in ways I never in a million years expected to be.

'However, the scars left by violence and sexual assault don't disappear, no matter how loved you are, and no matter how much money you've made.

'My perennial jumpiness is a family joke – and even I know it's funny – but I pray my daughters never have the same reasons I do for hating sudden loud noises, or finding people behind me when I haven't heard them approaching.'

Ms Rowling also declared she had 'deep concerns' about the pressures young people face to transition to another gender.

She even suggested she might have become a man herself - 'to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he'd have preferred' – if she had been subjected to similar pressures.

The bestselling team behind the Princess in Black children's series is looking to an even younger audience for its latest project.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 6:48 PM IST

NEW YORK: The best-selling team behind the Princess in Black children’s series is looking to an even younger audience for its latest project.

Starting next March, writer Shannon Hale and illustrator LeUyen Pham are launching a kitty and unicorn picture book series, Abrams Books for Young Readers announced Wednesday. The first of three planned books is called Itty Bitty Kitty-Corn,” which celebrates the magic of friendship and of uplifting themes of believing in yourself, embracing your identity, and seeing others for who they truly are in a glittery, oversized package perfect for little hands, according to Abrams.

Pham and Hale have previously worked together on the graphic memoirs Best Friends and Real Friends and on six Princess in Black books, most recently The Science Fair Scare.

On her own, Hale was a finalist in 2006 for the Newbery Medal for best children’s book for her fantasy novel Princess Academy. Pham was a Caldecott Medal finalist earlier this year, for best children’s picture book, for “Bear Came Along.”

FULL STORY

Biosensors that are wearable on human skin or safely used inside the body are increasingly prevalent for both medical applications and everyday health monitoring. Finding the right materials to bind the sensors together and adhere them to surfaces is also an important part of making this technology better. A recent study from Binghamton University, State University of New York offers one possible solution, especially for skin applications.

Matthew S. Brown, a fourth-year PhD student with Assistant Professor Ahyeon Koh's lab in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, served as the lead author for "Electronic?ECM: A Permeable Microporous Elastomer for an Advanced Bio-Integrated Continuous Sensing Platform," published in the journal Advanced Materials Technology.

The study utilizes polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a silicone material popular for use in biosensors because of its biocompatibility and soft mechanics. It's generally utilized as a solid film, nonporous material, which can lead to problems in sensor breathability and sweat evaporation.

"In athletic monitoring, if you have a device on your skin, sweat can build up under that device," Brown said. "That can cause inflammation and also inaccuracies in continuous monitoring applications.

"For instance, one experiment with electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis showed that the porous PDMS allowed for the evaporation of sweat during exercise, capable of maintaining a high-resolution signal. The nonporous PDMS did not provide the ability for the sweat to readily evaporate, leading to a lower signal resolution after exercise.

The team created a porous PDMS material through electrospinning, a production method that makes nanofibers through the use of electric force.

During mechanical testing, the researchers found that this new material acted like the collagen and elastic fibers of the human epidermis. The material was also capable of acting as a dry adhesive for the electronics to strongly laminate on the skin, for adhesive-free monitoring. Biocompatibility and viability testing also showed better results after seven days of use, compared to the nonporous PDMS film.

"You can use this in a wide variety of applications where you need fluids to passively transfer through the material -- such as sweat -- to readily evaporate through the device," Brown said.

Because the material's permeable structure is capable of biofluid, small-molecule and gas diffusion, it can be integrated with soft biological tissue such as skin, neural and cardiac tissue with reduced inflammation at the application site.

Among the applications that Brown sees are electronics for healing long-term, chronic wounds; breathable electronics for oxygen and carbon dioxide respiratory monitoring; devices that integrate human cells within implantable electronic devices; and real-time, in-vitro chemical and biological monitoring.

Koh -- whose recent projects include sweat-assisted battery power and biomonitoring -- described the porous PDMS study as "a cornerstone of my research."

"My lab is very interested in developing a biointegrated sensing system beyond wearable electronics," she said. "At the moment, technologies have advanced to develop durable and flexible devices over the past 10 years. But we always want to go even further, to create sensors that can be used in more nonvisible systems that aren't just on the skin.

"Koh also sees the possibilities for this porous PDMS material in another line of research she is pursuing with Associate Professor Seokheun Choi from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She and Choi are combining their strengths to create stretchable papers for soft bioelectronics, enabling us to monitor physiological statuses.

Realme 3 Pro Review
  • PROS
  • Good gaming performance
  • Consistent camera
  • Much needed, refined UI
  • CONS
  • Lacks durability
  • Average display
  • Portrait mode looks artificial

Verdict

The Realme 3 Pro certainly lives up to the “Pro” moniker. It’s significantly more powerful and faster than the regular Realme 3, but that’s not its competition. The Realme  3 Pro’s closest rival is the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the company CEO Madhav Seth left no stone unturned to compare the device to Xiaomi’s best-seller. To be fair, both phones are incredible close in terms of both performance and camera. The UI is vastly different and while the Redmi Note 7 Pro offers ads on the homescreen, the Realme 3 Pro has greatly improved UI aesthetics. Finally, the Realme 3 Pro is perhaps the best gaming phone under Rs 15,000, and as a result, it is the perfect alternative to the Redmi Note 7 Pro which is focused on more on the camera.

Realme 3 Pro detailed review

Just a year back, Realme was announced as a sub-brand of Oppo in India, and ever since then, the now-independent brand has not looked back. In 2019, Realme announced new phones every two months or so, and the Realme 3 Pro is the latest offering. There’s already a Realme 3 in the market, so what makes this one a ‘pro?’. For one, it introduces the Snapdragon 710 in the mid-range segment. It also uses the same camera as that of the OnePlus 6T (priced over Rs 35,000), and offers a high-capacity battery with support for super-fast charging. All that combined certainly makes the Realme 3 Pro an enticing option to look out for when buying a new phone, but is it really the best mid-ranger available right now? Read on to find out.

Design

The Realme 3 Pro stresses heavily on speed, so much so, that the rear panel is designed with an S-curve which is apparently a tribute to the S-shaped track of Le Mans, the legendary Grand Prix circuit. The pattern is evident in the blue gradient shades that the phone emanates when held against light. Personally, I felt the design comes off a little too gaudy and isn’t quite something I’d spend money on. The more demure purple and grey variant look much better though.

The phone is also surprisingly slim considering it packs a 4,000mAh battery. The rear panel which seems to be made of resin, curves gently around the edges to reduce the thickness,  offering a tighter grip. The form-factor makes it just enough for my thumb to reach the other end of the display, so I wouldn’t rule out one-handed use for people with larger hands. The fingerprint sensor is fairly responsive and is mounted on the back along the center while the camera unit is arranged vertically on the top left corner. Thankfully, there’s no significant camera bump as the module is encased inside a silver-coloured enclosure.

The Realme 3 Pro certainly looks good from the back. From the front however, it’s identical to its predecessor with a waterdrop notch and a nearly bezel-less display. The screen-to-body ratio is also similar to the Realme 2 Pro and so is the micro-USB for charging. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio. There is a single speaker grill on the bottom while the earpiece is placed right above the notch.

What’s worrying is that the frame of the phone is not quite robust. A single tumble from my hand was enough to leave ugly scars on the frame from  where it hit the ground and the colours chipped away. The display was saved though, thanks to the presence of Gorilla Glass 5. Realme does bundle a case in the box which will render further protection from drops.

Display

The Realme 3 Pro essentially has the same waterdrop notched IPS LCD display as its predecessor. It stretches to 6.3-inches diagonally and offers decent viewability. It’s certainly not the best display that’s on offer in the sub-15,000 range. That accolade goes to the Samsung Galaxy M30 with its Super AMOLED panel. The one on the Realme 3 Pro, however, is perfectly usable.

The panel takes up most of the real-estate up front but there are distinct bezels on the bottom. The shrunken notch also helps free up space for content. Effectively, thanks to a smaller notch, the display can now fit more icons on the status bar than before.

Despite a FullHD display, The Realme 3 Pro unit we received had Widevine L3 DRM rating which means you won’t be able to stream content from Netflix,  Hotstar and other streaming services in HD. Realme said the DRM rating will be upgraded via an OTA update. However, that doesn’t mean you will be able to stream DRM-protected content in full HD as the streaming services have to manually enable support for the device to let it stream in higher resolution. The Poco F1 which went through a similar OTA update for its Widevine certification still hasn’t been certified by many streaming services.

While streaming content on the Realme 3 Pro is a bummer, gaming is what this phone is really made for. The expansive display is perfect for a round of PUBG Mobile as the entire panel is used up, giving a lot more space for moving your fingers. It’s also sufficiently bright at 457 lux at peak brightness. The brightness rating is slightly lower than the Realme 2 Pro, even though this seems to be the same display and we’re not quite sure why that’s the case.

The display also has a slightly colder white-balance, making most content appear just a smidge bluer than normal. The phone gives the option to tweak the colour-temperature from cooler to warmer, but these are preset settings and fudges up the colour temperature even more. You do get the option to turn on Night Mode and change font sizes. The colours come out  slightly boosted and the blacks seem to look darker on the Realme 3 Pro than in the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Overall, the Realme 3 Pro has a perfectly usable display, but it’s certainly not the best in its segment.

Performance

It’s what’s under the hood that makes Realme 3 Pro earn the ‘Pro’ moniker. The device introduces the Snapdragon 710 to the mid-range segment, which supposedly bridges the gap between mid-range and high-end chipsets. By doing so, the Realme 3 Pro certainly manages to make heads turn even while the Redmi Note 7 Pro has been topping performance charts everywhere. It certainly sounds powerful, but is it the fastest phone around in that segment?

CPU Benchmarks

On AnTuTu, the Realme 3 Pro scored 154810, which is significantly lesser than what the Redmi Note 7 Pro achieved. Corroborating the results, the Realme 3 Pro also scored lower on Geekbench Single Core and Multi Core as compared to the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Clearly, the Snapdragon 675 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro has a faster CPU than the Realme 3 Pro. This checks out once again in our Mobile Xprt 2015 scores where the Redmi Note 7 Pro was faster in finishing up all the tasks as compared to the Realme 3 Pro. Finally, PCMark Work 2.0 scores confirmed the Realme 3 Pro is not as fast as the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

This, we believe, is because the Snapdragon 675 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro more advanced CPU custom cores based on  ARM Cortex-A76 which also powers the flagship Snapdragon 855.

GPU Benchmarks

On GPU benchmarks, however, the Realme 3 Pro proved to be an outright winner. On 3DMark Slingshot the Realme 3 Pro scored 2653, as opposed to 1836 by Redmi Note 7 Pro. In the GFXBench tests, the Realme 3 Pro was able to render more frames than the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

The Realme 3 Pro’s superiority in GPU benchmarks is primarily due to the fact that the Snapdragon 710 has a more powerful Adreno 616 GPU as compared to the Adreno 612 on the Snapdragon 675 that powers the Redmi Note 7 Pro. This is ironic considering the Snapdragon 675 is advertised as a SoC tuned for gaming.

Gaming

The GPU benchmark results was an early indication, but on our Gamebench analysis of PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9, it became clear that the Realme 3 Pro is a better device for gaming, if not the best at its price range. The Realme 3 Pro managed to offer 30 FPS on PUBG Mobile with High graphics and anti-aliasing on. It managed to do so with 99 percent stability. On the other hand, the Redmi Note 7 Pro also managed 30 FPS, but with 96 percent stability.

On Asphalt 9, the Realme 3 Pro was more consistent with 29FPS and 88 percent frame rate stability while the Redmi Note 7 Pro’s results were quite disappointing with 18FPS and 50 percent frame-rate stability. We believe the Redmi Note 7 Pro is specifically optimised to handle PUBG Mobile better while other games like Asphalt 9 isn’t quite tuned to make the most of the performance.

The Realme 3 Pro doesn’t have any such issues. It managed to run both games almost equally well with PUBG Mobile running particularly smoother. You can reduce the quality of graphics further to get frame rates up to 40 FPS on the device.
Furthermore, when gaming on the Realme 3 Pro, you will not be distracted by incoming notifications. However, if you do have to reply to a text, there’s an option to do so without exiting the game by swiping in from the edges to bring up a quick-launch menu of frequently-used messaging apps. These apps open in a small pop-up that lets you reply without getting out of the game. Cool feature, this.

Daily Usage

The Snapdragon 710 ensures the Realme 3 Pro doesn’t slow down in daily usage. The phone is offered in three variants with a minimum of 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The unit we reviewed had 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and there’s also another 6GB RAM with 64GB storage variant. The 6GB RAM variant posted no visible lag or slowdown in our daily usage which involved writing articles, shooting photos and editing them using Snapseed and Lightroom and some gaming and social media browsing. Apps also launched without any noticeable delay and the UI animations have been optimised to run better on the device.

The Realme 3 Pro is satisfying to use in daily life with a strong focus on gaming. We also did an in-depth performance comparison of the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Realme 3 Pro and our primary takeaway was just that. While the Redmi Note 7 Pro manages to do everything well enough, the Realme 3 Pro goes that extra mile to deliver better gaming performance. The company does have a strong fan following of college students and a gaming-optimised offering might just work in Realme’s favour.

Software

Part of what made using the Realme 3 Pro a decent experience is the polished interface. It’s far out from the ugly UI of its predecessor. It was my biggest complaint against the Realme 2 Pro and I’m glad that the company has listened to feedback to improve the UI in a big way.

Homescreen

Minus-1 screen

App Drawer

The Realme 3 Pro runs on ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie and there’s a marked change in visual aesthetics. For one, the app drawer is now a part of the UI. The icons look more polished and the system animations have been made faster. There’s also a minus-1 screen that houses essential information and it apparently adapts to your usage. But the most important thing that makes the Realme 3 Pro a viable choice is the lack of ads in the phone. Unlike Xiaomi, which has become notorious for popping ads randomly on MIUI, the Realme 3 Pro is devoid of any such thing. It does come with a few additional apps pre-installed like UC Browser, DailyHunt and ShareChat. Thankfully they can be uninstalled.

Camera

The Realme 3 Pro’s camera isn’t as feature-rich as that of the Redmi Note 7 Pro, but it’s perfectly usable. The phone pairs the same 16MP Sony IMX519 that’s there on the OnePlus 6T, with a 5MP depth sensor. The primary camera has an aperture of f/1.7 and is able to take fairly detailed shots in both day and night. There’s the usual AI scene recognition on this one too. We noted that the Realme 3 Pro was able to recognise scenes slightly faster than the Redmi Note 7 Pro, and the resulting effect is essentially adding more contrast and saturation to the photos. Then there’s Realme’s proprietary Chroma Boost feature that also increases the colour saturation and contrast to make them look more palatable. While both these features somewhat help enhance the photo quality, the UltraHD feature that combines four 16MP image to create a large-format 64MP photo is interesting, to say the least. It’s a way for Realme to counter the threat of 48MP camera phones without spending more or upgraded hardware. The feature is only available in pro-mode. There’s also Nightscape, that works to improve low-light photos by taking multiple photos in various exposure and merge them to create one photo.

Here’s how the camera performs —

Daylight

Daytime images taken with the Realme 3 Pro doesn’t show any noticeable flaws. The photos come out well-exposed with good amount of detail and sharpness. The Realme 3 Pro’s images look slightly cooler though with the blues coming out more prominent. We noticed that the Realme 3 Pro’s images are brighter than the ones taken with the Redmi Note 7 Pro. We’re guessing this is because of the larger aperture.

Indoors

When shooting indoors, the cooler colour bias becomes more apparent. The colours look significantly cooler. The photos are also enhanced with high contrast and sharpness, and for some, they might look aesthetically better but they’re far from being closer to source.

Lowlight

Low-light photography has so far been a big differentiator between high-end and mid-range smartphones. The Realme 3 Pro closes the gap by offering decent low-light photos. We used the camera during a trip to Taipei where we shot a few photos in low-light and almost all of them look quite good.

Even without using night mode, night scenes come out well-lit and have decent dynamic range. When using the nightmode, the colours and exposure are boosted, but it also brings in a lot more noise. The night mode is especially useful if you’re shooting a photo in low-light with backlit text in the frame.

Portrait

Thanks to a dedicated depth sensor, the Realme 3 Pro is quite capable of segregating the foreground from the background. The portrait mode on the phone works well enough to offer better consistency, but the quality of bokeh itself looks artificial. There is also the same boosted contrast effect in work here.

Selfies

Selfies taken with the 25MP front camera come out quite sharp and well-detailed. There’s also minimal highlight clipping. There are various AI effects that you can add to your selfies, each more controversial than the other. There are features like face thinning, reducing the size of your nose, eyes and the likes. Is Realme encouraging users to modify their facial features to feed social media frenzy?

UltraHD

While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro uses an actual 48MP sensor to deliver large-format photos, the Realme 3 Pro also does something similar, albeit using software only. The Realme 3 Pro is capable of delivering 64MP photos, a good 16MP more than what Redmi offers. It does it by taking four 16MP photos in quick succession and merging the accumulated data to offer a 9216x6912 resolution image. Does it offer any significant improvement? Somewhat.

If you look at the sample below, the 64MP image managed to offer more details than the 16MP image could, although the threads around the branch does look quite oversharpened. You can look at the 100 percent crops of the photos to determine.

100 percent crop (64MP Ultra HD mode)

100 percent crop (Default 16MP mode)

Battery

The Pro moniker is given further justice thanks to a high-capacity battery and fast charging. The Realme 3 Pro sports a 4045mAh battery that also supports VOOC 3.0 charging. It’s quite difficult to drain the battery of the phone in a day no matter how extensively you end up using it. And even if you do, VOOC fast charging essentially ensures 50 percent of the battery gets topped up in less than an hour.

In our Geekbench battery test, the Realme 3 Pro took around 11 hours 51 minutes to drain the battery from full charge to two percent. That’s an impressive number and indicates that the phone has enough juice to get you through the day and then some. 30 minutes of streaming Sacred Games drained the battery by just 5 percent while a 15-minute PUBG Mobile session drained the battery from 68 percent to 65 percent. The battery performance is quite similar to what we saw on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 pro.

However, when it comes to charging the high-capacity battery, the Realme 3 Pro is perhaps the fastest of the lot. The phone supports VOOC 3.0 charging which tops up the battery using 25W power. The same tech is used in Oppo phones like the F11 Pro and it’s nice to see a much cheaper, mid-range device pay attention to the small details. The VOOC charger is a huge brick though, same as the Warp Charger that OnePlus bundles. It took approximately 90 minutes to top up the 4045mAh battery on the phone.

Bottomline

The Realme 3 Pro certainly lives up to the “Pro” moniker. It’s significantly more powerful and faster than the regular Realme 3, but that’s not its competition. The Realme  3 Pro’s closest rival is the Redmi Note 7 Pro. To be fair, both phones are incredible close in terms of both performance and camera. The UI is vastly different and while the Redmi Note 7 Pro offers ads on the homescreen, the Realme 3 Pro has greatly improved UI aesthetics. Finally, the Realme 3 Pro is perhaps the best gaming phone under Rs 15,000, and as a result, it is the perfect alternative to the Redmi Note 7 Pro which is focused more on the camera.

Verdict

If you have a budget of 40K for a premium soundbar then yes, you can consider the Sony HT-G700. It has fantastic sound output, supports Dolby Atmos, 4K HDR passthrough with Dolby Vision support and a simple plug and play setup. What it lacks is any form of internet connectivity or app controls. For Dolby Atmos support, don't expect the sound to come from on top of you or behind you. However, the sound from the soundbar is loud, clear and has a wide soundstage when consuming content sitting in the sweetspot. With Immersive AE turned on, you do get clearler audio especially the separation between the dialogues and background score. With eARC support the soundbar is futureproof as well.

Sony HT-G700 TV Soundbar detailed review

Soundbars have cemented themselves as must-haves if you want to enhance the sound from your flat-screen TV without investing in a dedicated home theatre setup. The biggest advantage of a soundbar is that it is easy to set up and with connectivity like HDMI ARC (or in this case eARC), and can also decode audio formats like Dolby Atmos. Whether they can simulate surround sound effectively is a debate for another day. Today we have with us the Sony HT-G700. It is a 3.1 soundbar and brings with it a host of features like HDMI eARC along with HDMI passthrough, support for Dolby Atmos and a wireless subwoofer. Being a simple 3.1 setup, this soundbar claims to give you an immersive surround sound experience. Does it deliver?

Sony HT-G700: What’s in the box

In the box, you get the soundbar itself along with a wireless subwoofer. You also get the remote control in the box, an HDMI cable, and wall mounting brackets. You also get two AAA batteries. The remote control accompanying the system is compact and has all the essential functions. It is very reminiscent of the remote control we saw with the Sony HT-S20R (review) and that's a good thing. Instead of Sony’s Vertical Surround found on the remote control of the HT-Z9F (review) of the Sony HT-X8500 (review), we have an Immersive AE button and we will talk more about that in the performance section.  Know that when you use ARC (or eARC) to connect the soundbar to the TV, you can control the bar from the comfort of the TV remote.

Sony HT-G700 Connectivity options

When it comes to connectivity options, the soundbar has an HDMI port for eARC and one HDMI passthrough port that supports 4K HDR passthrough including Dolby Vision at 4K/60P/YUV 4:4:4. It also boasts of Sony’s BRAVIA SYNC which means that you can connect the soundbar wirelessly to some Sony Bravia TVs. At a similar price point, we have seen soundbars like the JBL SB450 (review) with 3 HDMI passthrough ports with 4K HDR support (but no support for Dolby Vision). The Sony HT-G700 also has an optical port, USB port and also supports Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless connectivity.

The Sony HT-G700 supports HDMI passthrough

We have seen the Yamaha YAS-209 bring with it support for Wi-Fi and Ethernet along with Alexa built-in. You can also control the Yamaha with a dedicated smartphone app. All these features are missing in the Sony HT-G700 and if you want them on a Sony soundbar you will have to consider the HT-Z9F.

The Sony HT-G700 soundbar does boast of support for DTS-X and Dolby Atmos which is nice. However, without top firing speakers or rear speakers, we were interested to see how the object-based surround sound works on this bar.

Setting up the Sony HT-G700

Setting up the soundbar can be done in less than 5 minutes. The soundbar connects wirelessly to the subwoofer. Just connect the two to a power supply, connect the HDMI cable to the ARC port of your TV and to the HDMI out port on the soundbar and you are good to go. Just remember, that some TVs need you to manually change to ARC in the sound settings.

With eARC support, this soundbar is future proof and will work with 2019 and 2020 flagship TVs that support eARC. Put simply, eARC has higher bandwidth than ARC and also gives the bar access to DTS: X and Dolby Atmos content.

The Sony HT-G700 has a plug and play setup.

Once the soundbar and subwoofer are plugged in and turned on, you should see a green light in the front top left corner of the subwoofer. If the light is red, it isn't synced to the soundbar. If it's green, it is connected and good to go.

Sony HT-G700 Build and Design

A premium finish is the first thing that comes to mind when you first look at the soundbar. Unlike the HT-Z9F which has a glossy finish, this one has a matte finish and the front grill is not removable. It has an industrial design with slightly curved edges and a certain amount of heft to it. Even though the soundbar has chunky depth to it doesn't look intrusive when you look at it from the front. It is only from the side that you realize how big the soundbar is and that is not at all a bad thing considering it has excellent construction and build quality.

All the ports are conveniently located at the back of the soundbar in a cavity making cable management easy. The soundbar also has a display in the front and it only comes on when the soundbar is on. Place the soundbar under a TV ranging from 50-inches to 65-inches and it will look right at home.

The Sony HT-G700 also has a display.

The wireless subwoofer is big and quite heavy. The subwoofer is front-firing with the pairing button hidden at the back. The subtle green light in the front indicating that the subwoofer is connected to the soundbar is a nice touch. There are times when one feels the subwoofer has probably disconnected from the soundbar and one look at the tiny green light washes those doubts away. It is a subtle thing, but one I truly appreciate as I don't need to get up and go to the back of the soundbar to see if the connection is stable.

The soundbar also has touch controls on the top to control things like power, source, Bluetooth and volume.

Overall, the Sony HT-G700 is a very well built premium soundbar with a simple industrial design.

Before we get into the pure sound performance of the soundbar, let's get a few things out of the way. Firstly, unlike the HT-Z9F that gave you an on-screen menu when connected via HDMI, this one does not. You have to rely on the small display on the front of the soundbar if you want to change any settings. While it is functional and gets the job done, the lack of the ability to go through the settings on your big screen is a tad disappointing especially when the setup experience on the HT-Z9F was so simple and easy to use. But then again, this bar is meant to be more of a plug and play solution with fewer options to tinker, so someone like me who likes to dive into the settings is just nitpicking here.

Secondly, even though the soundbar supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X don't expect the sound to come from on top of you or from behind you. At best, expect a wider soundstage from the front when consuming content. Having said that, I think we should all set our expectations realistically about surround sound without dedicated surround speakers. Unless we are talking about something like the Sennheiser Ambeo or the Sony HT-ST5000.

Let’s break down the performance of the soundbar into movies, music and gaming performance.

The Sony HT-G700 has rounded corners and a premium build.

Movies

Holy smokes! This soundbar is loud. I placed it in my living room, which for reference is about 20 foot by 13 foot. I was sitting 6 feet from my TV smack bang in the middle of the soundbar and I was blown away with how loud this soundbar can get. The soundbar has 400W of output and you can feel it especially when you put the volume all the way up to 80 percent. In a movie like “A Quiet Place,” the sound was set to 75 percent volume and there was pin-drop silence before one of the characters screamed on screen and the background music kicked in and the clarity of the sound along with volume was truly immersive.

Even in a movie like Mission Impossible which has Tom Cruise swishing across the screen on a motorcycle, the channel separation from left to right was superb. Even the dialogues spoken during action sequences are extremely clear. All the above content is in 5.1 through OTT services.

Netflix is one service provider that offers movies and TV shows in Dolby Atmos. And like I said above, don't expect the sound to come from on top of you. If anything, expect a little more clarity in the dialogues spoken. Also, the little white button on the remote control called “Immersive AE” will not work when streaming Dolby Atmos content as it is meant to “upscale” non-Atmos content to surround sound.

The Subwoofer is loud and has deep bass.

Sitting 6 feet away, whether watching Atmos or 5.1 content from OTT service providers, one thing is clear, the sound will immerse you just because how loud the soundbar can get and for that reason alone this is great for watching movies. When watching non-Atmos content you can switch on the Immersive AE button and if nothing else, it makes the dialogues a lot clearer and the left and right channel separation is more pronounced. For watching content that has a lot more dialogue, I found myself using the Immersive AE mode more than the voice mode to have better dialogue clarity.

Overall, for movie watching the Sony HT-G700 is a great experience provided you don't expect to hear the rain from above you.

Music

The Music performance of the Sony soundbar is what you’d expect from a Sony speaker. If you love music with good bass then this soundbar will not disappoint. If you want the extra thump, you can always increase the level of the subwoofer, but somewhere between 5 and 7 (12 being the maximum) is where I left it most of the time. I also heard Bang Bang by Will I Am and the bass along with the orchestra of instruments in the song made me want to dance and my neighbours eventually had to call and ask me to turn the volume down at 10 in the night. Yes, I'd like to emphasize again, this soundbar can get plenty loud.

The Sony HT-G700 soundbar is thick and has heft to it

Until now the best music experience from a soundbar for me has been from the Yamaha YAS 209 for 2 reasons. Firstly, when in stereo mode and listening to music, the bass is just right, not too overpowering and only showing its presence when needed. And secondly, the stereo separation when listening to music is almost as good as a stereo bookshelf setup for listening to music especially if you sit in the sweet spot. Comparing the Yamaha to the Sony the Sony HT-G700 is much louder, and better suited for that party at home. It also has a more commanding presence with bass, so bass lovers may prefer the Sony. But in music mode, the Yamaha still presents better stereo separation.

Gaming

For gaming, we played Marvel Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War and Doom. Channel separation works well in all the games, especially when playing Spider-Man. You can hear the city pass you when swinging with chatter from the street clearly audible. Once again for gaming, I kept the Immersive AE mode on which helped with clever dialogue and easier separation of background sound from what's happening right next to you. Even in the Last of Us Part II, when the emotional background score kicks in the soundbar shines. Even with bullets whizzing by you and enemies calling out to each other, you kinda know where to look based on the channel separation.

Dooms soundtrack is another one that sounds really good on this soundbar with deep rich bass, great bangs for the guns and the signature grunts of the demons. The bass from the sub when playing doom was room-filling.

Overall, the Sony HT-G700 is great for gaming. Dialogues are clear, sound effects crisp and Immersive.

By now you probably think I am in love with the sound output from this soundbar and you are right in thinking so. It checks all the right boxes for me. There is no complication with the sound modes and there is no customization needed. You could simply leave it on auto and forget about the rest. For movies, TV shows, gaming and even music, the soundbar is a great one-stop-shop. If you like, you can also dim the display of the soundbar when consuming content in a pitch dark room.

So what's missing? Well, for one thing, I wish there was an app that could be used to control the soundbar. Once you connect it via ARC, you can control the volume using the TV remote control. So I tucked the Sony remote away for safekeeping and every time I needed to tinker with the settings I had to hunt for it. The Yamaha YAS 209 can be controlled completely with the companion app and the convenience of that is missing from the Sony.

Sony HT-G700 Remote control

Speaking of the remote control, the bundled remote control with the soundbar is simple. All the buttons are neatly laid out in two rows. On the remote control, you have the options for input, control for the various modes, a mute button. Buttons like ‘Voice’ help with boosting the vocals if you like whereas functions like Night ensure the bangs in action movies don't get too loud. You can also control the subwoofer level and there is a button to navigate the menu.

The Sony HT-G700 has an easy to use remote control.

Bottom line

So here’s the ever-important question. Should you spend 40K on the Sony HT-G700? Well, if you have a budget of 40K for a premium soundbar then yes. It has fantastic sound output, supports Dolby Atmos, 4K HDR passthrough with Dolby Vision support and a simple plug and play setup. What it lacks is any form of internet connectivity or app controls and as we mentioned in the beginning, don't expect the sound to come from on top of you or behind you. With Immersive AE turned on, you do get clearer audio especially the separation between the dialogues and background score. However, for approximately 30K you can also consider the Yamaha YAS 209. It has 4K HDR passthrough without Dolby Vision and it does not support Dolby Atmos but does support DTS:X. It also comes with Alexa built-in and supports a companion smartphone app. But remember, the Sony HT-G700 is a 400W soundbar and can get plenty loud when compared to the 200W of the Yamaha. Other soundbars in this price range include the JBL SB 450 and the Philips TAPB603 that you can consider.

Verdict

The LG C9 brings with it great picture quality, a smooth OS and sleek design. The audio is acceptable for everyday viewing but for an immersive experience, you should invest in a dedicated soundbar or home theatre. The TV also boasts of full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 making it future-proof for things like 4K at 120Hz, VRR and eARC.

LG C9 65 inch Class 4K Smart OLED TV detailed review

LG’s lineup of OLED TVs have been fantastic performers and if you have purchased one, you would agree that consuming content on it is a treat. If you purchased an OLED TV in 2018, 2017 or even 2016, chances are the performance of these OLED TVs has been fairly homogenous when it comes to picture quality. However, 2019 has seen the biggest change in flagship TVs. We have seen 2019 flagship TVs get an update to their smart capabilities, support Apple Airplay and the biggest addition - HDMI 2.1. With the Sony 2019 OLED and Flagship LED TVs we have seen limited adoption of HDMI 2.1 i.e., these TVs support eARC only and miss out on things like variable refresh rate and 4K content at 120FPS. Granted, the only device that can take advantage of Variable Refresh Rate is the Xbox One X but the next-gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Scarlett) will be able to exploit this feature even more. Nonetheless, the TV is a flagship OLED TV from the house of LG. Is it worth the upgrade?

Build and design

The design of the LG C9 is absolutely premium. For the duration of the review, we had the TV on its tabletop stand. The stand is long and unlike the C8 (read our review here), which had a tall curving stand, the one on the C9 is shorter and has a more angular design. The design choice is a personal preference, but know that a slightly tall soundbar could hamper your viewing experience on the C9. You may want to have a clean tabletop entertainment setup if you plan to keep this TV on a tabletop. Kept on a tabletop, the TV does wobble a  little bit but nothing that gives the feeling of toppling over. The wobble of the C9 isn’t as bad as what we saw on the OnePlus TV (watch our review here).

Moving over to the connectivity options, the LG C9 has 4 HDMI ports; all of which offer full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth capabilities, and 3 USB ports. It's nice to see that three of the 4 HDMI ports are on the side (including the ARC one) making it convenient for cable management. One of the three USB ports on the side as well. The TV also has a component in, AV in, a LAN port, optical audio out and a headphone out. The layout of the ports is identical to the C8 (read our review here)

Those that are finicky, can route the cables through a gap in the back of the tabletop stand for neater cable management.

The biggest highlight of the TV is how slim the panel is. It is a tad thicker than a one rupee coin and that is super thin. The TV does get thick towards the bottom, but that's because the internals need to be housed somewhere.

Overall, the TV is a beauty to look at and got a lot of admiration from everyone in the office.

Display Panel and picture quality

The panel on the LG C9 is an OLED panel and since LG has been making OLED panels for some time now, trust that the picture quality will be something to watch out for. This year, the flagship TV is powered by LG Alpha 9 gen 2 processor and boy does it do a good job at picture processing.

The TV has a resolution of 4K with support for both HDR10 and Dolby Vision and there is a nice indicator that pops up in the top right corner of the TV to indicate which HDR standard is currently on screen. The TV also supports Dolby Atmos and the same indicator pops up in the corner when Atmos content is playing. We’ll talk more about the sound in the upcoming sections.

With the OLED panels ability to produce infinite contrasts, it makes it a desirable product to enjoy as a home theatre. So how did it fare in our tests?

4K HDR

The beauty of an OLED TV is its ability to produce infinite contrast ratio, true blacks and deep colours. All this holds true and works extremely well on the C9. Watching Netflix through the built-in apps gave us access to Dolby Vision content and it looked breathtaking. Altered Carbon Season 1 Episode 7’s fight sequence is rich in details, with highlights getting nice and bright and key details clearly visible in dark corners. The muzzle flash in the slow-motion sequence here is absolutely immersive. From the skin tones to the textures on clothes, this is how content was meant to be watched. The Grand Tour Season 1 Episode 1 where you have many cars driving through the desert is a sight to behold. If you are looking for the ultimate 4K HDR picture quality experience on a TV at home, then yes, the LG C9 can be one of the TVs to consider. However, and this is true for all OLED TVs, if you have a bright room with a lot of natural light, the panel can get reflective, especially during dark sequences.

1080p content

A large catalogue of Netflix, Prime Videos, Hotstar and more content in India is in 1080p. From Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse to John Wick and more, 1080p content looks good. Sure, if you play 4K HDR content in its fullest capacity and immediately switch to 1080p and sit a mere 4 feet away from the TV like I did, you will be able to tell the difference. But from a 6 to 8 feet viewing distance, the TV can reproduce full HD and 720p content quite beautifully.

A testament to the clarity you can get from the OLED is the Season 8 episode 3 of Game of Thrones. When the battle with the dead happens, the world was in an uproar wondering why they couldn't see anything. If you owned an OLED TV, you would have enjoyed the episode as we did on this LG C9.

Gaming

Moving to gaming, we used our Xbox One X (read our review here) to game on the TV. The Xbox One X does support VRR, a feature on the TV but sadly, that's something that we can’t test to find out if it really works. Having said that, the gaming experience on the TV was sublime. Gears 5 (read our review here) which is our new benchmark for 4K  HDR gaming on a TV, looks sublime. Some of the opening sequences are set on a mountain littered with bright outdoors and dark passages. This is where the HDR capabilities of the TV truly shines. The game mode of the TV also brings with it low input lag. While it isn't the same as gaming on a 1ms monitor, the gaming experience on this TV is absolutely cinematic.

The same can be said for a game like Doom which is 4K but not HDR. The orange planet of Mars looks rich, details and the industrial indoors are a sight to behold.

Overall, this is the pinnacle of picture performance one can expect from a TV. One thing to keep in mind is that when consuming content from the native streaming apps on the TV, you can let the TV pick the picture mode. It does a pretty good job optimizing the picture performance. There is also an AI picture mode which I recommend you enable as it uses deep learning to optimize the picture performance. The overall picture performance of the TV is sublime.

Audio

The audio from TVs is generally disappointing, especially when you see the Dolby Atmos logo pop up on screen but it isn't extremely bad by any means. In fact, for everyday viewing and even enjoying TV shows and set-top-box content, the speakers from the TV do a good job. When playing games too, the audio is very clearly audible but it lacks bass. The audio output from the TV, though decent, can't keep pace with the visual spectacle that is the TV. You may, at the very least, want to invest in a soundbar to enjoy this TV.

Remote Control

The LG C9 brings with it a magic wand of a remote. The remote is curved and has slight heft to it. The weight adds to the overall build quality and the curve helps the remote fit comfortably in your hands, especially when you use its motion features. It is slightly heavier at the back and that is ok as it adds to the ergonomics.

The remote does have quite a few buttons including dedicated buttons for Prime Videos and Netflix along with the number pad. The navigation buttons and scroll wheel cum select button are comfortably located in the centre of the remote. There is a dedicated play and pause button at the bottom of the remote which is comfortable to reach. Though dedicated buttons for next, previous, rewind and forward would be nice, you can use the on-screen navigation on streaming services to achieve this. Overall, the remote control is tried and tested and can also be used to control your set-top-box, thereby eliminating the need for two remotes.

Software and UI

The TV runs on LG’s WebOS and it is one of the smoothest OSes out there. It is easy to navigate, swift to respond and brings a level of fluidity you’d expect from a flagship TV. From recognizing devices connected to HDMI inputs to navigating settings, the UI is fluid and the software is functional. It also has the Google Assistant and Alexa built-in. Long-press the voice button to bring up the assistant and long-press the Prime Videos button to bring up Alexa. Through the dashboard in the UI, you can also control your smart home gadgets, which is really cool.

Bottom line

If you are looking for a flagship OLED and are considering picking up one, then there are a few things to consider. If you are looking to watch content from streaming services, or set-top-box content or even 4K HDR Blu rays, then know that the LG’s 2019 lineup of OLEDs are a good choice along with Sony’s 2019 offering. Both brands bring their ‘A’ game. However, where Sony has the advantage is with slightly better natural tones when watching movies, but this is something most people won't notice. Where LG has the advantage is with HDMI 2.1 full-bandwidth connectivity on all HDMI ports bringing 4K 120FPS to the TV along with eARC support and VRR. The Sony TVs have eARC support but don't support 4K at 120Hz or VRR. If you are looking to future-proof your TV, then HDMI 2.1 should be an important consideration, which the LG C9 brings.

Babri Masjid Demolition Case: Verdict On Sept 30, LK Advani, Other Accused Told To Be Present

Babri Verdict On Sept 30, LK Advani, Other Accused Told To Be Present

LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati are among the BJP leaders accused of conspiracy, leading to demolition of the mosque in December 1992.

Babri Verdict On Sept 30, LK Advani, Other Accused Told To Be Present

LK Advani was asked over 100 questions by the court, he has denied all charges.

New Delhi:

The judgment in the 28-year-old case involving the demolition of the Babri Masjid -- an event that changed the country's political landscape and social fabric -- will be delivered on September 30. Special CBI judge SK Yadav, who will deliver the verdict, has asked all the accused -- including BJP veterans LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and senior leader Uma Bharti -- to be present in court.

The three, key leaders of the party at the time, are accused of conspiracy that led to the demolition of the 15th Century mosque in December 1992. The kar sevaks who pulled it down believed that it stood on the site of an ancient temple marking the birth place of the Lord Ram.

Mr Advani, 92, had recorded his statement in the mosque demolition case before the special CBI court through video conference on July 24. Mr Joshi, 86, recorded his statement a day before Mr Advani. Both have denied all charges against them.

In July, Uma Bharti told NDTV "it does not matter" to her what the judgement in the case will be. "If I am sent to the gallows, I will be blessed. The place where I was born will be happy," she had told NDTV.
